Each game costs $10 and features exactly what you'd expect from each: Buying/selling/trading property in Monopoly, becoming a teen widower in LIFE, etc. Players that also own Samsung smartphones (specifically the S1, S2 and S3) can download a free companion app that turns their phone into a motion controller for throwing dice and spinning wheels.

We'd also like to take this opportunity to announce that "Playing The Game of LIFE while staring at a giant, expensive television" wins Joystiq's Unintentional Irony of the Year Award.
Game of Life and Monopoly are EA's first games on Samsung Smart TVs originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Nov 2012 23:59:00 EST. Then we were wrong, but now we are right. Yes, 'Monopoly: Street Fighter Collector's Edition' is now available on Amazon at a RRP for $39.99.

The tokens are Chun-Li's bracelet, Vega's mask, a Hadouken, M.Bison, Blanka, Ryu, and Zangief's tiny red shorts. Alright, we made that last one up, but we had to highlight the oversight. As for the properties, while they're set to locations like 'Japanese Bathhouse' and 'China Marketplace,' in reality we reckon they're ordered by the character portraits on them. So, M. Bison and Gouken are the dark blues, which we suppose makes sense. Although there must be a case for Ryu (yellows) and Ken (reds) being the most valuable. Mind you, we're just happy they included everyone's favorite boxing gentleman, Dudley (light blues).
Argue over who gets to be Chun-Li's bracelet in Street Fighter Monopoly originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 07 Sep 2012 12:00:00 EST. The Zynga and Hasbro partnership will bear its first fruit this fall, when board game adaptations of CityVille, Words with Friends, Farmville and Draw Something hit retail, ABC reports.

CityVille Monopoly will be available in October for $24.99. It's a version of the Hasbro classic where players are tasked with building skycrapers instead of houses and hotels, and the first player to build four skyscrapers wins. Hungry Hungry Herd also releases in October, for $22.99, and is Hasbro's interpretation of FarmVille - it's just Hungry Hungry Hippos without the hippos.

Words with Friends will be available in two flavors this October and will play exactly the same as the online game, in the standard, $19.99 edition and a deluxe $39.99 edition with a rotating board. Not much is known on the fourth and final game, an adaptation of OMGPOP's Draw Something, which Zynga acquired for $200 million back in March. The board game adaptation of Draw Something is planned for late October/early November and will likely play a lot like Pictionary.
Zynga and Hasbro make CityVille Monopoly, more, for when you're board originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 05 Aug 2012 23:30:00 EST.

One is a complicated, galaxy-spanning game of intrigue and backstabbing, and the other is Mass Effect. Why not combine the two?

Deviantart user tommyfilth created this custom-made Mass Effect Monopoly board ("MassNopoly"), complete with Cerberus Tasks and Alliance missions in the place of Chance and Community, and actual Mass Effect relays standing in for the railroads. Eden Prime is the cheapest spot on the board, but beware: Stacked up with a few extra colonies and a corporation, it'll cost you 250 million credits if you land on it.

Unfortunately, this was just a DIY project tommyfilth made for his family this past Christmas (inspired by another custom Fallout-inspired Monopoly set), so none of it is official or available for purchase. If we were Commander Shepard, this would be our favorite board game on the -- well, you know.

Pass Go, collect 20m credits in Mass Effect Monopoly originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 05 Jan 2012 07:00:00 EST. Guys, if you're wondering if your significant other is The One, there's only one question you need to ask yourself: Would he or she go through the painstaking process to create something as awesome as this Fallout-themed Monopoly board just for little old you? If so, put a ring on it!

This was created by deviantART user PinkAxolotl, who swapped out classic Monopoly stops such as Baltic Ave and Park Place for locations from Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. The Go space has been changed to G.O.A.T. and the Free Parking space has been changed to the "Please Stand By" screen. The only similarity between this version of Monopoly and the classic? Your cousin Brian is still guaranteed to throw a hissyfit when you eventually trade all your railroads for a ham sandwich.
Fallout Monopoly is something we wish we could buy originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 29 Aug 2011 23:30:00 EST. EA has passed word that three of its games are now ready for the iPad: Monopoly, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and Snood can all be downloaded from the App Store right now.

These three games have been optimized for the iPad with near high-def graphics and interface tweaks made specifically for the platform. Both Monopoly and Hot Pursuit will set you back $9.99, while Snood is a bit more modestly priced at $4.99.
I'll be honest -- I wasn't expecting Monopoly to be any good. The demo, touting some lackluster graphics, and a sluggish interface, didn't sell me over at all. But, after playing a few full games, I have to say that my appreciation (and more importantly, understanding) of how the board game works has definitely improved.

The full release doesn't get rid of the ugly UI issues. But, you are at least able to change your background to something a bit more palpable. The game won't fully explain the rules of the game, but the various tips and tricks that the game tosses in will make you realize some of the (cheap) strategies you can use to win the game. In fact, before this mobile version of Monopoly, I had no idea what the official rules of the game were -- now I do! You can also easily modify your game to accommodate custom rules, like getting money when you land on Free Parking. You can even change how many houses it takes to build a hotel, how much money you collect when passing Go, and how intelligent your AI opponents are.

It would be nice if there were some other faster game modes, as a single game can take quite a long time from beginning to end. Also, some preset modifications would've been great to entertain. However, the biggest shortcoming of Monopoly is the lack of any real Xbox Live functionality. Yes, there are some ridiculously easy Achievements (you can get all 200G in one sitting, if you're good/lucky enough!). But, where's online multiplayer? Although Xbox Live (currently) doesn't allow for simultaneous multiplayer, it's sad to see EA didn't figure out a clever asynchronous way of playing against others. There is, at the very least, pass-the-system multiplayer.

Monopoly is far from one of the best games on Windows Phone right now, but it's certainly far from the worst. While this is a very faithful recreation of the board game, it's equally disheartening to see EA tackle it so unimaginatively.
It looks like Electronic Arts is breaking out its biggest guns for its Windows Phone 7 launch lineup -- well, it's biggest guns that can be adequately turned into smaller guns for use on a mobile platform, anyways. The publisher has named four games that will hit the WP7 storefront soon after the platform goes live on November 8: Need For Speed: Undercover, The Sims 3, Monopoly and some obscure indie puzzle game called ... Tetris?

Now sure, all those games are already available on other mobile platforms, but you're forgetting why you're going to feel compelled to purchase them again on the Windows Phone 7: Sweet, sweet 'Cheevos. Hell, Monopoly's like 85 years old. You've probably bought it a dozen times already -- but now you're going to buy it a baker's dozen times, because, admit it, you've got to be boosting that Gamerscore.
Continue reading EA announces Windows Phone 7 launch titles

EA announces Windows Phone 7 launch titles originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 12 Oct 2010 13:30:00 EST.
Monopoly Streets reimagines the classic board game as a dynamic gameworld encountered from street level. As players buy and build up properties, they'll see actual buildings erected, styled in accordance with the neighborhoods' economic status. That's right -- you'll be able to see the Water Works for yourself! Each player will also have a headquarters that grows and crumbles with the player's fortunes. And if none of this sounds at all like the Monoppoly you know and love, "classic game board" modes will also be playable. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions will also feature online play and DLC.

In addition to Streets, EA will release a more traditional Monopoly game for DS this fall. As if that's not enough unilateral control of the virtual board game market, the company has also revealed the browser-based Monopoly City, currently in development for release on EA's Pogo portal.
See the sites in EA's Monopoly Streets originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 06 May 2010 13:07:00 EST. EA did say that game would be out before March 2011! The summer release is listed for consoles, PC and handhelds.

Also due out in the quarter: the expected spate of annual sports franchises (Madden, FIFA, FIFA Online, NHL), a Monopoly game for consoles and handhelds, and a new MySims title -- we're guessing MySims Sky Heroes.
Medal of Honor, APB dated for Summer 2010 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 08 Feb 2010 17:20:00 EST. Good news for PSP-toting board game fans: GamerBytes recently spotted an ESRB listing for a PSP version of Monopoly. With the addition of a new version of Monopoly for the PSP -- now rated by the ESRB -- EA is close to bringing a version of the classic board game to every available gaming platform (only the DS is left out at this point). There isn't much known about the PSP version, though it does have support for up to four players. It's not clear if it will be a full retail game or a PSP Mini, though the recently released iPhone version would probably make a prime target for the Mini market.
ESRB rates Monopoly for PSP originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 30 Nov 2009 19:15:00 EST. Although a version called Monopoly: Here & Now: The World (sweet mercy, that title!) was previously released on iPhone, there is also now a plain ol' version of Monopoly for $5 on the App Store. The game supports up to four players on the same network or through "pass 'n play." There's also the option of a two player game through Bluetooth multiplayer.

We had previously criticized the Xbox 360 take on the classic board game for costing $30, especially when the non-virtual version is under $20 at most retailers, so $5 doesn't seem like such a bad deal.
The electronic incarnation of board game classic Monopoly is now available on Games on Demand for ... $30?! Sweet mercy, does that have luxury and income tax on it? The board game costs less than $20 and many electronic versions can be found for even less than that.

As is our standard obligation, we'll mention that a used copy of the title can currently be found at GameStop for $25, which is still overpriced. Shouldn't this be a simple XBLA title, if anything? A $10 Xbox version of Monopoly would be lovely.

EA is getting good mileage out of this Hasbro deal. The latest platform to be assaulted with family-friendly adaptations of classic board games is the iPhone and iPod Touch, with Battleship, Connect 4 and Monopoly Classic en route from EA Mobile. There's no word on prices or release date as of right now, but we'll be sure to pass that news along once it's available.
Most sports game fans are none too happy about EA's monopolization of the NFL -- but only because of the limited choice of official football games they're afforded. A little over a month ago, two game enthusiasts, Geoffrey Pecover and Jeffrey Lawrence, filed a class-action suit against EA -- not due to the loss of fun that resulted following the eradication of the competing NFL 2K franchise, but rather, due to the loss of funds.

The two men called University of Michigan economics professor Dr. Jeffrey MacKie-Mason (for those keeping count, that's three Jeffs in this story so far) as a witness in the case. His findings, which he admits are based on incomplete data, are shocking -- he claims that with no direct competitor, EA was able to raise the price on the Madden series. By his estimate, EA effectively overcharged the game's purchasers between $701 million and $926 million from 2006 to 2009.

Wedbush analyst and Joystiq celebrity Michael Pachter responded to the estimate with vitriol, claiming that the professor had based his claims on faulty figures -- for instance, EA only made about $800 million off the Madden franchise during that period, and the series' average price only increased by a few cents after the NFL 2K series bit the dust. Thanks for the clarification, Pachy -- but we could have guessed the estimates were bunko. A billion dollars is a difficult thing to take from a group with such a keen eye for acts of corporate Ledgermain.
Economist: EA overcharged Madden buyers up to $926 million originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 15 Jul 2009 13:05:00 EST. We feel like we're in some kind of topsy-turvy bizarro dimension this morning. Not only did a couple of guys sue EA for having a monopoly on football games, but a U.S. District Court Judge in San Francisco has said the case can move forward, denying the company's request to dismiss it. Just before the deluge of GDC 2009 news started this week, Travis Boatman, VP of worldwide studios at EA Mobile, confirmed the upcoming release of a veritable smörgåsbord of EA franchises coming to the iPhone. Today, we have confirmation from Meghan Rathman (representing EA) of the exact titles on the way to the iPhone/iTouch as well as a handful of screens from Tiger Woods PGA Tour. Unfortunately, according to Ms. Rathman, the rest of the games in development are "still too early" and don't have screens. Considering the turnaround time on iPhone/iTouch games though, we're willing to bet you'll see those shots <strike>by the end of the week</strike> pretty soon!

The full list of games we received from EA is as follows: Tiger Woods PGA Tour, The Sims 3, FIFA, Madden NFL Football, Spore Creatures, Mystery Mania, Wolfenstein RPG, American Idol, Connect Four, Battleship, Need for Speed, RISK, Monopoly and Clue. Differing from reports at the GDC Mobile event earlier this week, we're seeing the addition of The Sims 3 and Need for Speed. In turn, we're losing the first SSX in two years, Red Alert, NBA Live 10, American Idol, Star Trek. But hey, Tiger Woods!

The press release from EA on Tiger Woods PGA Tour tells us that the game is of the "touch" rather than of the "shake" variety, comes with achievements and offers a way to compare achievements with your friends. Of the key features listed, notably missing is "playing against friends wirelessly," though it does promise the ability to "affect your ball spin direction" using your finger. Those are comparable features, right? We'll keep on EA and let you know as soon as we find out more on their upcoming iPhone/iTouch assault.

Gallery: Tiger Woods PGA Tour on iPhone

GDC09: Upcoming EA iPhone game list fully revealed, screens and info on Tiger originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 27 Mar 2009 17:30:00 EST. The title will include multiple game boards to "pass Go" on, including the classic board and the new one from Monopoly Here & Now: The World Edition (see the semi-related Stephen Colbert skit posted after the break, just for fun).

There's also a new mode you can play called the "Riches Mode," which is a faster and more party-friendly way to get your Monopoly on. It starts out with a minigame (which, in the Wii version, will utilize motion controls -- think sawing yourself out of jail, for example). Whoever wins gets to choose how many pieces they'd like randomly dropped onto the board. If your piece lands on an unoccupied space, you come to own it. If you land on someone else's space, though, you have to pay them. There's no money involved, so you just end up giving them a property or something of the sort. Meanwhile, if your piece lands on a space like Chance, you have to do whatever the card tells you.

One downfall, however, is that the Wii version (like the PS2 game) will not have online play. You'll have to turn to the Xbox 360 version for online multiplayer.

Don't forget to check out why Monopoly is a threat (via Stephen Colbert) after the break.
Continue reading EA brings Monopoly to the Wii

EA brings Monopoly to the Wii originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 24 Apr 2008 21:00:00 EST. But after reading the press release, we're under the impression that the game will in fact be a retail (and full priced) release. Boo! Boo! Boo! Also, per the release, it says that you'll be able to play MONOPOLY in "offline single or multi-player mode". No online multiplayer? Double boo to you EA! Go directly to jail, do not pass Go and do not collect our $59.99.

[Via NeoGAF]
MONOPOLY announced it goes directly to jail originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 23 Apr 2008 13:30:00 EST. When the power goes out on Joystiq's mid-Atlantic hoverbase, we often use Monopoly to pass the time, or at least we did until we realized that every game ended after four hours with the board being flipped and somebody (usually Chris) getting punched in the face. This morning, EA announced that we wouldn't have to wait for an outage to start throwing fists: The company will bring the real-estate game to Xbox 360, Wii and PS2 this fall.

This is apparently a sped-up version of the original game, with some new interactive minigames thrown in. We hope we can use waggle to hammer eviction notices to the doors of our slums. But that's just us. Oh, and just so we can cut this discussion off at the pass: No, there's no PS3 version announced. We trust PS3 owners can scrounge up $12.99, directions to their local Toys 'R' Us and a tabletop without our aid.
EA bringing Monopoly to 360, Wii, PS2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 23 Apr 2008 09:30:00 EST. Gamers tired of being pushed around by game retail behemoth Gamestop can check out a potential ray of hope at this week's International Franchise Expo in Washington, D.C. There, game retailer Gamer Doc will be showing off new store prototypes that "will change the way the video game store is interpreted," according to a press release.

Strong words for a franchise that only has three outlets <strike>nationwide</strike> in development thus far [Updated with corrected wording on 4/11], but Gamer Doc seems eager to show off its new, FHA-designed stores, which it says will make customers "feel like they're walking into a video game, not a video game store." The three themed designs have been created to replicate "a first-person shooter battle zone, ... a futuristic "Borg Spaceship," [and] a carefree, cartoon-character atmosphere." Great news for anyone who's ever dreamed of buying video games from the Borg, we suppose ...

While we're a little skeptical that gimmicky store themes are really enough to drive a wedge into Gamestop's 5,000+ store dominance, we definitely support anyone trying to bring real competition to the game retail space. No longer will your games of Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit be confined to the Monday night get-together at your neighbor's house, as you'll soon be able to enjoy these games without your "friends."

The titles currently in the works are:

Littlest Pet Shop (DS, Wii, PC) - fall

NERF "N-Strike" (Wii, DS) - fall

Looking over the rest of the list for titles releasing on mobile phones and to EA's online POGO portal, we're wondering why the DS is getting the shaft. Monopoly, Yahtzee and Scrabble are all releasing on mobile phones and via POGO, but where's the DS love? All we get are these two games? We hope this changes ...

[Via Joystiq]
EA to bring Hasbro to your DS originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Feb 2008 14:15:00 EST. Electronic Arts has sewn up the rights to deliver games based on numerous Hasbro properties, though before you get too excited in hopes that you'll soon be revisiting your past and playing games based on G.I. Joe, we should note that of this "initial slate" of brands singled out by the companies not one packs a 'kung fu grip.' EA calls these games "new ways for families to build relationships through digital entertainment," which of course means we'll be seeing at least some of these games crop up on the Wii.

In fact, the first titles from the deal confirmed for both the Wii and DS include games based on Littlest Pet Shop and NERF "N-Strike," both of which are being put together by EA's Salt Lake Studio. Last year EA inked a deal with Hasbro for rights to make games based on the seemingly innocent but often cutthroat board game Monopoly, and players will be able to edge their way out of (and into) virtual bankruptcy come March for mobile phones and later in the fall over EA's casual POGO portal for the PC. Other brands in the works as part of this new deal include Scrabble, Operation, and Trivial Pursuit, meaning that in the not to distant future we could be once again partying like it's Christmas 1980.

EA announces intial batch of Hasbro games, G.I. Electronic Arts knows a thing or two about having a "monopoly," now they own the rights to it. A partnership between EA and Hasbro gives both companies the rights to dabble in each other's pool. EA gains "exclusive worldwide rights" to create games based on Hasbro products like Monopoly, Scrabble, Nerf, Yahtzee and basically anything else you probably remember from childhood. Hasbro will be able to make toys based on EA properties -- darn, we might actually pay for Spore mix and match figures if they make them. The deal runs until the end of 2013, with an option for another four years.

The partnership is part of the newly formed EA Casual Entertainment strategy. A whole division of EA fully focused on bringing high-end casual games to the mass market. This partnership may be a good thing for EA. Actually, they're the perfect company to handle putting games that haven't changed in a half-century on consoles, they've practically been doing the same thing with the Madden franchise for years.
EA gets monopoly on Monopoly originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 10 Aug 2007 10:35:00 EST. The purpose was to discuss the top five trends in 2007 in the realm of gaming and entertainment.

When games meet entertainment brands, it's traditionally meant a game based on a movie that comes out a few weeks (or months) after the film has hit theaters. However, for the past few years games have started to be released concurrently with the films, or even before the movies come out. Hollywood studios now include video game development in the earliest stages of pre-production, and even involve game companies in the writing process.

Games + Entertainment Brands also encompasses traditional board games, like Scrabble and Monopoly, being licensed for video games, and toys like Bratz and Barbie as well. We break down the top five trends that will be hitting games + entertainment brands in 2007 after the jump.
Continue reading SXSW: Games + Entertainment Brands: Five Top Trends In 2007

SXSW: Games + Entertainment Brands: Five Top Trends In 2007 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 Mar 2007 17:26:00 EST. The complete makeover of the entire board is there with games such as Doom and Pong taking their respective places in substitution for the classic city streets. The creator has also transformed the cards, pieces and money that come along with the game.

It's a mighty fine effort and we applaud the dedication needed to make something like this happen. The only things that seem to be lacking in terms of quality to us are the cheapo looking player pieces and house and hotel pieces. Also, spelling "joystick" without a "q" is just plain wrong. Otherwise, bravo.

But we've got to know one thing from Joystiq Nation: Anyone got any beef with the importance of some of the games on the board compared to their price?

[Thanks, Stephen Q. When you're not playing Nintendo's video games, you're probably doing one of three things: cosplaying as famous Nintendo characters, quilting yourself a blanket featuring your favorite Nintendo characters, or wondering why those same Nintendo characters don't permeate every other facet of your life.

Courtesy of Rich Uncle Pennybags and the good folks at USAopoly comes Monopoly: Nintendo Collector's Edition. Yup, we're talking about an actual physical copy of Monopoly, not a video game version. The promotional shots they sent us don't show off the board very well (although we can tell that Mario is Boardwalk, natch), but they do show off all the little pewter figurines. They are: Mario's hat, Koopa shell, NES controller, Donkey Kong barrel, Link's boots (of the iron variety we assume), and Link's shield (of the Hylian variety).

Alright, we love Zelda as much as the next cosplaying Link fan, but two Zelda tokens and not a single Metroid one? Samus ain't gonna be happy. Expect to find it in stores in July for an suggested retail price of $35.95. That's like one DS game, right? Plenty o' pics after the break.
Continue reading In Nintendo Monopoly, Mario is Boardwalk

In Nintendo Monopoly, Mario is Boardwalk originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 09 Jun 2006 18:25:00 EST.
