In Japan, it's half exciting ("Monster") and half not-so-exciting ("Finder.") As <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=76331">GameStop's listing</a> for the North American release shows, the same problem is happening even in localization. "Showdown" sounds fairly action-packed, but "Foto Showdown" fails to convey the whole monster-combat thing.<br /> <br /> <em>Foto Showdown</em> is suddenly not the only game in town when it comes to monster generation on the DS. This game, with its camera-based monster system, is now in a showdown of its own -- with Tecmo's just-announced <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/10/tecmo-dates-again-dusts-off-monster-rancher-ds/">Monster Rancher DS</a></em>.<br /> <br /> [Via <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2009/11/15/monster-finder-renamed-foto-showdown-for-north-america/">Siliconera</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/16/dsi-exclusive-monster-finder-is-now-foto-showdown/">DSi-exclusive 'Monster Finder' is now 'Foto Showdown'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 Nov 2009 12:15:00 EST. <div align="left">According to online game rental service <a href="http://www.gamefly.com/game/nintendo-ds/Monster-Finder/140395/">GameFly</a>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/monster-finder">Monster Finder</a> </em>(note: totally not <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/monster-hunter"><em>Monster Hunter</em></a>), the first DSi-only game announced in Japan, will be headed to the US thanks to Konami. <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2009/10/20/konami-bringing-dsi-exclusive-monster-finder-stateside/">Siliconera</a> notes that the game is listed for a January 2010 release.<br /><br />As we've <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/01/first-dsi-exclusive-game-found-monster-finder/">previously reported</a>, the game -- which sounds similar in concept to the PSP's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/invizimals">Invizimals</a> -- </em>utilizes one of the DSi's two cameras to create an <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augmented_reality">augmented reality</a> adventure where players must "find" monsters in the real world. We find ourselves wondering if its creator, <a href="http://mf.alphastation.jp/MF_top.html">Alpha Unit</a>, just wasn't feeling all that creative when naming the game ... or if it really wanted that tenuous <em>Monster Hunter </em>connection after all. </div>

Today, Japanese publisher Alpha Unit announced the first one, <a href="http://mf.alphastation.jp/"><em>Monster Finder</em></a> -- though, since it was announced for Japan, we doubt it's one of the games being referred to yesterday!<br /><br />Basically the only details available about <em>Monster Finder </em>right now are that it includes over 100 different varieties of monster and that those monsters are <em>found</em> with the DSi camera (hence the DSi exclusivity); and probably represented in-game by the scanner-gun thing seen in the teaser artwork. It's part <em>Monster Rancher</em>, part augmented reality. <em>Monster Finder</em> will be released sometime this winter in Japan.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2009/09/01/monster_finder/">Andriasang</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/01/first-dsi-exclusive-game-found-monster-finder/">First DSi-exclusive game found: Monster Finder</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Sep 2009 12:01:00 EST.
