XBLA countdown to 2013 daily deal: Them's fightin' games

Today's Xbox Live deal offers 50 percent off of Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection, Dungeon Defenders, Street Fighter 3: Third Strike Online Edition and Dungeon Fighter Live, all for XBLA. Virtua Fighter 5, Dungeon Defenders and Street Fighter 3 are each 600 MS Points, while Mortal Kombat Arcade and Dungeon Fighter Live are 400 MS Points. You could say today's deals pack a real punch.

These sales mark the latest installment of Xbox Live's really long New Year's countdown, which offers daily deals on a variety of games until that big, reflective ball falls out of the sky on January 1.

PSN Spring Fever extended: Mortal Kombat diskounts tomorrow

Sony's had such success with its PSN Spring Fever discount promotion the last few weeks that it's been extended an additional week. Joining the launch of Wheels of Destruction tomorrow are discounts across the board for all Mortal Kombat kontent.

The Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection, which contains the original Mortal Kombat and sequels Mortal Kombat 2 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, is on sale for $6.99, and $4.99 for PS Plus subscribers. In addition to that, all DLC content for Netherrealm's Mortal Kombat reboot is on sale, either as individual fighter downloads for $3.49 each ($2.44 if you're a PS Plus subscriber) or all together in one bundle for $10.49; $7.47 if you're a PS Plus subscriber.

Finally, you can download Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe at a reduced cost of $13.49, but you may want to read a few reviews before pulling the trigger on that one. Just saying!

Mortal Kombat: Arcade Kollection for PC is a real thing, on Steam now

It's official: The Mortal Kombat: Arcade Kollection does exist on PC, despite vehement, confusing statements from series creator Ed Boon to the contrary. Mortal Kombat: Arcade Kollection is available now on Steam, currently at 15 percent off, or $8.49.

The Kollection includes arcade classics Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, with all the conveniences of modern PC gaming, which unfortunately means it comes without the kabinets.

PSN's best selling games of 2011 list dominated by games not from 2011

We're practically knee deep in 2012 at this point, and yet 2011 still refuses to give up the limelight, dropping financial data and sales reports on its way out the door in a desperate final attempt at relevance. So here we are, with a list of 2011's top sellers on the PlayStation Network ... and we've got two lists dominated by one game from 1985, and one from 2010.

Speaking only in terms of full games, not "paid downloads" (like DLC packs for Black Ops) and PS Minis, the list is a hodgepodge of nostalgia-fueled favorites from yesteryear (like Tetris in its curiously lofty number one spot), and digitally distributed future-classics like Castle Crashers and Limbo, which ranked in at six and seven respectively. There's on important thread tying those together: none of those games launched in 2011.

When all digital sales are taken into account, however, the list becomes an entirely different beast, and the only actual game present within the top 10 is Angry Birds, of all things (a PS Mini). In fact, the three best-selling anythings on the PlayStation Network in 2011 were Black Ops DLC packs, followed closely by a cavalcade of FIFA Soccer 12 and MLB 11 sundries. Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection (PC) exists, depending on who you ask [update]

The PC version of Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection may be the world's first quantum video game. As we all know, quantum superposition tells us that any physical system (like an electron) exists in all possible states until observed or measured by an outside force. Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection seems to follow the same set of rules -- the only problem is that the game's observable state is different depending on who's looking.

According to life-long Mortal Kombat shepherd Ed Boon, a PC version of MKAK never existed. This directly contradicts the fighter's original press release, which announced the title for "PlayStation(R)Network, Xbox LIVE(R) Arcade for the Xbox 360(R) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows PC." Additionally, a statement made to DSOGaming claims that the port has not been canceled, though no release date has been given.

It's a lot like Schrödinger's cat. We have no idea whether the project is dead or alive. We have reached out to Warner Bros. for comment.

Update: So when Ed Boon said that MKAK never existed, it turns out he actually meant that it totally exists, albeit with no announced release date.

Beyond Good & Evil HD heavily discounted on Xbox Live today

Third-person photo shooter Beyond Good & Evil HD is the star discount in today's (hnnggghhh) "Cyber Monday" sale on Xbox Live. It's down from 800 MSP ($10) to 240 MSP -- that's $3 for one of last generation's most charming and thoughtful adventures. If you find the lack of inverted camera bothersome, perhaps you can put some of today's savings toward brain inversion surgery. It'll be worth it!

Xbox Live is also discounting three other games for today only: An assembly of three klassic fighters in Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection (400 MSP / $5), ol' sale standby Risk Factions (200 MSP / $2.50), and a game that's awesome in alliteration only, Dungeons and Dragons: Daggerdale (600 MSP / $7.50).

Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection tops Sept. PSN sales charts

Those of you with fragile, tenuous grips on reality should cover your eyes for the rest of this article. Covered? Okay good, because according to Sony's PSN sales charts for September, we live in a world where 19-year-old Mortal Kombat games outsell Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Castlevania and Final Fantasy games. We know, we're suddenly very worried about 2012 as well.

A veritable pile of games were released on Xbox Live Arcade this week. You've already read our thoughts on Rock of Ages and The Baconing (haven't you?), which leaves us with Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection and Ugly Americans: Apocalypsegeddon.

Arcade Kollection is essentially a known quantity, while Apocalypsegeddon is ... well, maybe it's a quantity that shouldn't be known.

PSN Tuesday: The Baconing, MK Arcade Collection, Elevator Action Deluxe

What a crowded week! PlayStation Network PLAY continues with The Baconing, while the PS3 sees releases of Elevator Action Deluxe, the Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection, and more outside of the promotion. If you're a Plus user, you'll have an Assassin's Creed Revelations beta and a God of War Origins demo to play.

Even the PSP has a new original game this week, ClaDun X2, and permanent price drops on some cool Square Enix games. Let's just hope the maintenance clears up soon so we can get all this stuff.

Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection hits XBLA, PSN on August 31 [update: PSN August 30]

Fight! Wait, hang on. Do that next week, when the Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection lands on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. The game, which bundles the arcade versions of Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, will be released on August 31 for $10.

In honor of the collection's release, we have dubbed August 31 "Mortal Wednesday."

Update: Warner Bros has issued an update, noting that Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection will be "available on exclusively on PlayStation Network in the North America only starting August 30, 2011." The global PSN launch, as well as the XBLA release, will happen the following day, August 31.
