What's an "iisu," you ask? It's an acronym for "The Interface Is You," of course! It's also the name of SoftKinetic's "3D gesture recognition" software development kit, available now for "qualified developers" to license for free. The iisu SDK is said to work with "all major 3D depth-sensing devices," which we're told includes support for Microsoft's Kinect.

The free version of iisu is strictly a "non-commercial" SDK, though a full, commercial version can be purchased. The dev kit offers tools for building both games and applications, and includes Unity 3D and Flash support. Interested parties can get the ball rolling by applying for a free license on SoftKinetic's application page.

Between SoftKinetic's SDK and those from Evoluce, PrimeSense and even Microsoft itself, there will soon be, like, so many SDKs available for Kinect. We're gonna start stretching right now in preparation for the eventual results.
Continue reading SoftKinetic releases free, Kinect-compatible 'iisu' dev kit

SoftKinetic releases free, Kinect-compatible 'iisu' dev kit originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 28 Feb 2011 10:30:00 EST. We've seen plenty of cheap imitators of the Nintendo Wii since the system launched back in 2006 -- but we've never seen one of these knockoffs be quite so honest as the "Wireless 60." Seriously, the product description on the back of its box borders on self-deprecating.
Continue reading Standalone motion-sensing game console believes honesty is the best policy

Standalone motion-sensing game console believes honesty is the best policy originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 05 Dec 2010 17:00:00 EST.
The game itself involves searching these 3D environments for hidden objects. In the level shown in the trailer after the break (which you really should watch to figure out what the hell we're talking about), you're looking for items that, when viewed from a certain perspective, arrange themselves into letters.

Rittai Kakushi E Atta Kore Da will be out in Japan on DSiWare March 3.
Continue reading Japanese DSiWare game uses camera to create illusion of depth

Japanese DSiWare game uses camera to create illusion of depth originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 26 Feb 2010 19:15:00 EST. Netherlands-based handheld gaming studio Engine Software has developed a cool new piece of tech for the DSi: motion sensitivity. To show off this breakthrough, the company has developed a brief demo video of TILT, a kind of Marble Blast Ultra clone where the player guides a ball around the gameworld by tilting the DSi. It's not the first we've heard of this kinda tech, and it won't be the last.

Engine Software isn't stopping with just this tech demo, however. The company is currently working on a full DSiWare game that will incorporate this new technology; though it likely won't be a full version of TILT, but rather an entirely new game. Head past the break to check out a brief video showcasing the tech.
Continue reading DSi motion control demoed by Engine Software

DSi motion control demoed by Engine Software originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 Jan 2010 11:06:00 EST. Griffin International's upcoming controller for the Xbox 360 may be one of the craziest looking peripherals ever designed. No, this isn't a sex toy. Rather, it's the first motion-sensing controller to release on the 360, and it's for the most exciting sport ever created by man -- fishing.

The fishing rod controller will be bundled with Bass Pro Shops: The Strike, a new fishing game that promises to appeal to "gamers of all levels." For simulation fans, the game's focus on accurate depictions of lures, reels and rods will undoubtedly be enticing. However, the developers have also accounted for casual gamers that might not want to sit around for hours on end, waiting for the perfect fish to catch. A simplified arcade mode will highlight "hot spots" for fish, whilst making the process of snagging a fish much easier. In addition to the arcade mode, there will also be mini-games, such as a boat racing challenge.

The game and controller bundle will cost $80 and will be sold at Bass Pro Shops and other retailers in September. A Wii version is also in the works, which will include a plastic fishing rod shell to put around the controller. An early hands-on of the Xbox 360 version was accessible for us fishing novices, while the promise of added depth certainly looked convincing. One note of trouble, though: the early prototype we played with broke apart in the middle of play. We were told final production models will be sturdier, but we thought we'd pass on the warning.

Revolutionary motion controls come to Xbox 360 (and Wii) ... in new fishing game originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Jul 2009 15:30:00 EST. If there was one driving theme behind this year's E3, it was that motion controls are too cool for school. However, even with both Microsoft and Sony jumping onto the bandwagon with their own gesture-based antics, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto tells the BBC that he's "not worried at all" about being left behind.

In fact, the brain trust says that Nintendo's "very flattered" by the competition. Still, Miyamoto barbed his comments, stating that, based on what he's seen so far, neither competitor's motion controllers "have the type of depth that we're able to provide with Wii Motion Plus." Sony. Microsoft. You hear that hitting the floor? That's the gauntlet.

[Via 1UP]
Miyamoto flattered, not worried by Sony, Microsoft motion controllers originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 08 Jun 2009 08:00:00 EST. Rumors of Microsoft's intent to ride on Nintendo's motion-sensitive coattails are nothing new, and while nothing has been announced, the Wall Street Journal suggests that a new motion-detecting camera from Microsoft could be unveiled as early as next month's E3.

Citing unnamed sources reportedly close to the project, the rumored camera captures a player's body motion and translates it onto the screen. The functionality reads more like the EyeToy than the Wii, though the WSJ's sources say that the rumored peripheral will offer "more accurate control over games" than other cameras. Microsoft was said to be in talks to purchase 3D camera company 3DV earlier this year, tech the sources say is behind the camera. Whatever the case, the camera, if true, is likely a ways off, with the WSJ's sources further noting that the device won't see the light of retail until sometime next year.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
WSJ: Microsoft prepping Xbox 360 motion control camera originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 May 2009 08:35:00 EST. Microsoft's rumored motion-sensing peripheral for the Xbox 360 may have actually been on display to the public under a different banner, Ars Technica suggests. The meat of this speculation (tofu compact for vegans) is that the site actually saw the same technology at the Consumer Electronics Show last year, and Microsoft is allegedly buying 3DV, the company responsible.

Back at CES 2008, 3DV apparently had a small web-cam that could detect movement and interaction, telling Ars at the time that it planned to release the item in the "sub-$100 area." Ars states that the technology was already "mature" at the time and was like having a "Microsoft Surface -- without the Surface." It's all still "rumor and speculation," but it seems Ars has found some missing puzzle pieces between the couch cushions.

[Via Engadget]
Ars discusses rumored Xbox 360 motion sensor originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 May 2009 09:30:00 EST. You know E3 is less than a month away when the Joystiq rumor page has near daily stories. Be that as it may, a tipster over at our sister site, Engadget, has spotted what seems to be a new peripheral for the Xbox 360. Though details are scant, the source notes that rather than holding a motion sensing peripheral of some sort, a camera, mic, and sensors will pick up "full body movement and sound." Here's the full bulleted list of features (again, according to the tipster):

Full body and hand gesture control of games / characters.

In fighting games you kick, punch, duck, dive, jump and so forth with your body.

It also picks up small hand gestures like pinching, grabbing and scrolling.

There will also be video conferencing and games with video.

Trivia game over the internet with live images of each person playing. When a question pops up, they can clap to buzz in.

You can "move objects on your screen" and the other party can see what you're doing in real time.

Sensor detects only the person playing, not folks observing on the couch.

Those rumors may finally become truth this month, according to this ... additional rumor! The Cut Scene reports that, according to "sources," Sony is set to officially unveil this new device at E3, which is already the venue for some rumored new Sony hardware! How exciting! To be honest, the new device could still be shaped like a regular controller, but include pointing.

According to The Cut Scene's shadowy informant, the prototype closely resembles one of the patents, meaning that it used a small camera to track the movement of multiple LEDs on a controller. It's basically a Wiimote in reverse, with one important distinction: "Because the camera can read different color lights and the shape and angle of each light, it's much more accurate than the Wii-mote. It can track precise movements, including along the Z axis (pushing toward and away from the TV; something the Wii is really bad at) as well as velocity."
Rumor: Sony to unveil new motion-sensing controller at E3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 01 May 2009 09:32:00 EST. A story from Haaretz was circulating last week claiming that Microsoft was in talks to purchase 3DV, maker of a camera-based motion sensing technology. Now, VentureBeat has supported the claim, saying that its sources confirm that a deal is in the works.

Assuming Microsoft has gaming in mind and not creepy, Minority Report-style desktop navigation, our feelings are mixed on it. It could be a giant leap forward if 3DV's tech were bundled with a new console, but we're not sure we'll be ponying up for another stand-alone camera while still under the watchful, dusty eye of our Xbox Live Vision. What about you?
VentureBeat: Microsoft buying 3D camera company originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Feb 2009 10:10:00 EST. Apparently for a motion-sensing DS card, the title for the trademark reads as "DS Houi Sensor Card". Curious, to say the least.

Houi means direction, so it leads one to deduce that it's a card that senses direction or, more likely, motion. What's most interesting about this is Nintendo apparently means to include this technology directly into a DS card. It'd be like being able to play WarioWare Twisted! on the Nintendo DSi. Yeah, that would be awesome.
Nintendo making motion-sensing DS card? originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Jan 2009 15:52:00 EST. In their NSF-supported three-year research project, Marcia O'Malley and Michael Byrne will measure motions in various activities, receiving a constantly-updating stream of data as the repetition of the tasks leads to learning.

Making the Wii connection even easier: the first activities being measured right now are Wii games. "We're starting with a bunch of Wii games," said Byrne. "We find that some games have really good learning properties we can measure, and there are also some that people don't seem to get a lot better at." We're guessing the dual-wheel approach here is being used to gather even more detailed motion info (using more Wiimotes and thus more acceleromters) than just a single device.

The goal of this whole data-collection exercise is to create robotic systems to help teach physical tasks by providing direct feedback to the body -- basically pushing you in the way you need to move.
Rice University study uses Wii to measure learning originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 09 Dec 2008 19:20:00 EST. Minor hardware revisions are common in electronics. As parts get smaller, cheaper, and draw smaller amounts of energy, companies swap out the internals for identically-functioning new versions. It's no surprise that Nintendo is looking into alternate accelerometer chips to provide the motion sensing functions of the Wii Remote, or that companies who manufacture accelerometers are clamoring to get their devices into the controller, thus ensuring a constant demand for their chips. Nintendo is currently looking at samples sent from many different manufacturers.

According to a Nikkei Tech-On! article, one of the companies, Kionix, may make it possible to increase the sensitivity of the accelerometer's motion-sensing. Nintendo has yet to make any decisions. "It is difficult for manufacturers to be selected as a new supplier," an employee of a sensor company told Nikkei.

[Via Gadget Lab]
Nintendo considers new accelerometer tech for Wiimotes originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 10:00:00 EST. Building on reports of an impending Xbox 360 price cut, which allegedly will drop the Arcade SKU below Wii to $199, comes the reemergence of Microsoft's elusive motion controller, now rumored to be included with the Xbox 360 Arcade this holiday. A source "close to Microsoft's marketing department" detailed the bundle to X3F, claiming the new Arcade system will feature a 512MB memory card (in place of a hard drive), the New Xbox Experience pre-loaded and a motion controller, along with a few compatible minigames developed by Rare.

The motion controller supposedly will be sold separately as well, in a package that includes even more minigames. The controller is said to be compatible with all versions of Xbox 360. So how 'bout it, Nintendo -- you gonna trump this by tacking on HD?
Rumor: $199 Xbox 360 Arcade with motion controller originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 22 Aug 2008 12:58:00 EST. Back to button mashing for Kazooie. Microsoft has sent along a brief statement allegedly clarifying what Microsoft Game Studios creative director Ken Lobb meant when he said, "you twist the controller around and it'll move different things in [Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts]." The explanation goes a lil' something like this:

"There is no truth to this speculation. Ken's comment is in reference to rotating the left analog stick while hitting the X-button to move different things in the game."

While the statement seems to confirm that Banjo-Kazooie will stick to conventional controls, it by no means denies that Microsoft is preparing a magic show for E3. Will the wand be waved? Stay tuned.

Update: Rare has this to say: "There's no truth to the Banjo motion control rumor. Banjo has been designed to be played using a gamepad from the outset. People shouldn't take rumors that gestate in comments sections so seriously. They can often turn out to be red herrings, as is the case with Banjo and motion controls."
Microsoft: 'no truth' to Banjo-Kazooie motion control speculation [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 09 Jul 2008 16:59:00 EST. About 4 minutes into a new Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts developer commentary video, Microsoft Game Studios creative director Ken Lobb drops the line, "So you basically grab with the wrench and then you twist the controller around and it'll move different things in the game." Twist, you say? Earlier, we catch Kazooie doing just that: twisting an Xbox 360 controller (recreated above; full video embedded after the break). So what do we make of all this?

Well, there's that nagging rumor of some Abracadabra action going on behind closed doors at Microsoft, with Rare allegedly being one of the first studios to waggle the magic wand before passing it up for Vision cam support in the upcoming XBLA title, The Fast & The Furriest. It's not much of a stretch to assume that if Microsoft is to unveil a motion controller (say, next week!), Banjo-Kazooie could be one of the first titles to support the new feature. Waggletech(R) isn't exactly cutting edge or expensive, so a hardware manufacturer can essentially tack on motion sensitivity at any point (to varying degrees of success).

One theory suggests that Microsoft could install motion control into preexisting gamepads with an add-on device; perhaps a modified battery pack that also plugs into the headset port. Bundle the gizmo with Banjo-Kazooie, and you've got yourself a tried and true practice. Case closed? Certainly not.

Update: Microsoft has this to say.
Continue reading New Banjo-Kazooie vid fuels Xbox 360 motion controller speculation [update]

New Banjo-Kazooie vid fuels Xbox 360 motion controller speculation [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 09 Jul 2008 12:58:00 EST. Of course, that leads us to a pretty obvious question: what do you think about games offering multiple (completely different) control schemes in this manner? It's starting to seem that we're getting further away from the motion-based controls that were supposed to be the Wii's major selling point. Of course, with the way motion-sensing (doesn't) work in some games, that's not necessarily a terrible thing, but without it, what do we have left?
Wii Warm Up: Multiple control schemes originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Apr 2008 09:00:00 EST. The controller, codenamed "Newton" as in Newtonian Physics relating to gravity, inertia and acceleration, uses licensed patents from Gyration, makers of the 3D mouse and co-developer of technology used in Nintendo's Wii remote and the Guitar Hero controller (Patents 5898421 and 5440326).

Citing internal sources in Microsoft's hardware division, Metcalf describes the Newton as being powered by an USB LED sensor bar and having, "an LED sensor on the front accelerometer and gyroscope ... that can detect tilt and motion, rumble motors, wireless two way data communication with the 360 [and includes] a built in Microphone for Xbox Live and voice-activated games."

In January we broke the news that Rare was developing an Xbox Live Arcade game, titled The Fast and the Furriest, which purportedly features "a wand type input device for gesture recognition." The rumored Newton seems to fit the bill nicely for the title and may release along side the peripheral with an included download code, according to Metcalf. At the end of his lengthy post, Metcalf reiterates his confidence in his source and promises that if the Microsoft branded Wii remote-like device isn't out by the end of the year he will donate his Nintendo Wii to charity.

If the rumors end up being true, gamers shouldn't be surprised. With the popularity of the Nintendo Wii reaching a large segment of, traditionally, non-gamers, the market has opened-up considerably. With Microsoft's recent work to clear hardware shortage issues and Nintendo's constant sell-out rate, an Xbox 360 style Wii-mote could end up being a smart move and then it will be a matter of time before a new Arcade SKU is released that includes the rumored controller.
Rumor: X360 motion sensing controller by winter, codenamed Newton originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 09 Apr 2008 10:00:00 EST. MTV News has a secret source who sent in the above "sketch" and some info on what they claim is a veritable Wiimote clone, courtesy of your friends and ours at Microsoft. Reportedly, the Xbox (marketing?) team has been hard at work aping Nintendo's waggling wonder, in an attempt to "match the Wii point for point." The project, which the anonymous source calls "a colossal clusterf---," is being handled to some degree by internal developer Rare, who has had difficulty "hitting its deadlines," apparently compromising Microsoft's ambitions to have a product release by the end of the year. The more astute amongst you may recall that X3F broke the news about Rare's upcoming XBLA game The Fast and the Furriest in January, which purportedly features "a wand type input device for gesture recognition."

While not a huge surprise, considering the contortions Microsoft has put itself through to appeal to the "casual" audience, we're pretty certain releasing yet another interface for the Xbox 360 isn't going to accomplish much of anything outside of adding more delicious bullet points to the box (which SKU would this be?) and marginalizing any piece of software that required it. You're beautiful just the way you are, Xbox 360.
Rumor: Microsoft making motion-sensing Xbox 360 'Wiimote' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 07 Apr 2008 17:06:00 EST. After an erroneous rumor concerning an Xbox 360 motion-sensing controller prototype made the internet rounds yesterday (turns out it was a known Wiimote prototype), the folks at TeamXbox claim to know a little something something and - after said rumor made waves - felt compelled to share with us a little early. They said, "TeamXbox.com can confirm that Microsoft has been researching alternative input technologies for the last two years" including motion-sensing technology ala the Wiimote or Sixaxis.

They also note that Microsoft is specifically looking to improve the right-analog stick (request to MS: fix the D-pad while you're at it), and TeamXbox will "bring you a real list of next-generation Xbox controller prototypes soon." We skipped the previous rumor but since TeamXbox is putting their neck out on this one, we're inclined to give it a little more weight. We'll know if they're right soon enough.
Rumorang: Microsoft toying with motion-sensitive controller originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 28 Dec 2007 19:20:00 EST. Well, for one we suspect you have a deep and dark hatred for Bill Gates and his company. Also, this rumor states that Microsoft is working with one of Nintendo's partners to establish this motion-sensing controller.

Gyration, a company that Nintendo had worked with in the past to establish what has become the Wiimote, has now begun work with the Redmond-based giant to develop a unique controller for the Xbox 360. And, with the Xbox 360 being the only current-gen console missing motion-based controls, it's likely that Microsoft could be planning to correct this soon.

[Via Gaming Bits]
Rumor: Microsoft testing the motion-sensing waters originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 27 Dec 2007 15:00:00 EST. When asked on potentially creating a title for the Wii, he "didn't have much interest." Kouno-san seemed far more impressed with the technological possibilities of a peripheral like the PlayStation Eye, conjuring its controller possibilities. Harkening Minority Report similarities, he imagines playing a game "using hands, without even touching the controller." Sounds like someone read our earlier report on the 3-D mapping capabilities of the PlayStation Eye and may be cooking up something special for the PS3 audience. The PlayStation Eye is gearing up for a July release so stay tuned for more updates on new and unique uses for this peripheral.
PlayStation Eye is future of game control, says LocoRoco dev originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 May 2007 21:30:00 EST. But who cares about that, right? Instead, we direct you to his other statements in the interview, as he takes pop shots at motion-sensing controls period.

Balmer cites that overzealous gamers could mess with the input as "all of the sensors are active and all reporting information at the time, so we really have to find a way to filter what comes through on the motion controls so that everyone can have fun with them." We don't know if that's ever been a problem for us, but he fleshes out what he is implying by stating "I said if you're well behaved with the controls they work great but if you're jerky or jumping around the signal becomes very messy." This is the point in the post where we say, rather sarcastically, duh! Of course the controls are going to get all wonky if you're not controlled in your movements, but that doesn't necessarily mean the control scheme in and of itself is messy in any way, but the gamer who is messy in their actions.
EA: motion-sensing controls are "messy" originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Mar 2007 11:05:00 EST. The article says that the USB-based, multi-platform control system uses "sound waves and other technical wizardry" to sense the controllers position and orientation in space.

Sounds kind of ho-hum when both Nintendo and Sony are building motion-sensing technology into their standard controllers. But after a short demo, C&VG is ready to declare that the new system "offers a much more advanced means of control than Nintendo's forthcoming console." Indeed, a video of the system in action show a tennis racquet controller that mimics every real world move on-screen with incredible accuracy. Other videos show a bowling controller and a PS3-style prototype that splits apart for independent hand movements.

With Nintendo and Sony both investing so much into gyroscope- and IR-based controllers, this new, more accurate technology has the potential to be a spoiler when it comes out in Q3 2007. Forget the console wars... we may be entering the age of the controller wars.

(Thanks YimTaka)

New motion-sensing tech is Wii-beater? originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 20 Oct 2006 09:55:00 EST. You control a little a totem pole-looking character by moving your arms up and down at your sides (a motion that resembles the funky chicken) as he collect balls that balance on his head. Unfortunately, it turns out the still-unpriced Xbox 360 camera has the same studio-like light requirements as the Sony EyeToy, making the game basically unplayable in the dim, romantic glow of the Xbox Live Arcade booth -- much to the chagrin of the Microsoft staff on hand. Despite keeping the gaming press in the dark until the emergency floodlights arrive, they claim it's a superior product.
First gesture-based XBLA title still in the dark originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 May 2006 23:30:00 EST.
He writes, "The Xbox 360 controller is a conventional controller with no motion sensors built in. Ultimately, we think that many developers will opt to make games for the PS3 and the Wii, and will not make the same game for the Xbox 360, giving Sony and Nintendo a content advantage over Microsoft."

We agree that Microsoft's reaction to this announcement is critically important. Will the company be able to speak to this issue at all today?
