Wonderbook's 'Diggs Nightcrawler' due this holiday [update: May 29 in EU]

To date, the library for the PS3's augmented reality Wonderbook is one game deep: just Book of Spells. Wonderbook owners will have a second game to play "this Holiday," roughly a year after the first, when Diggs Nightcrawler arrives. [Update: May 29 in Europe!]

The PlayStation Blog posted a development diary and a gameplay video today, revealing the good news: Diggs Nightcrawler looks pretty interesting! The time developer Moonbot spent figuring out how to implement gameplay appears to be paying off. It's a (cute) noir mystery set in a series of virtual books, each of which is a setpiece for investigation, conducted by folding the book, touching the pages, and otherwise manipulating the world as if it really did come out of a book. Imagine what Wonderbook developers could come up with if they iterated a third time.

Die Gute Fabrik lead designer Douglas Wilson is comfortable asking people to make fools of themselves, as he demonstrated during his panel at GDC on Friday, "Three Folk Games To Inspire Radical New Video Games." Wilson emphasized the impact that physical, playground games can have on modern video game development, bringing players together outside of the screen. They certainly influenced Wilson's convention-famous motion game, Johann Sebastian Joust.

Wilson asked for volunteers from the audience to step on stage and play three games that influenced Joust: Standoff, Listelanse and the Danish Clapping Game. See a handful of eager audience members hitting themselves and dueling with wooden spoons in the gallery below, and read more about each game after the break.

Deadly Premonition: The Director's Cut, which has SWERY's signature on it so you know how director's cut-ty it is, will be released on April 30 in North America, both as a retail game and as a PSN download.

Pre-orders of the retail version from "participating retailers" including GameStop and Amazon will receive DLC "so plush, that Agent York (and Zach) will feel like their investigation in the small country town of Greenvale just turned into a vacation." The announcement from publisher Rising Star Games explains that the DLC will "expand the mystery beyond the original game and let Agent York (and Zach) live it up in Greenvale."

Like everything else about this game, man, we don't know.

Resident Evil series on sale on European PS Store this week

Starting with today's PSN content dump in Europe and running until March 27, select entries in the Resident Evil series will be on sale. Some games are available piecemeal, but the remainder must be acquired in special bundles - like Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, combined here for €14.99 (£11.99).

Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica X are also bundled together for €19.99 (£15.99), while several other games have been knocked down to €14.99 (£10.99) each: Operation Raccoon City, the gold edition of Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil: Chronicles HD Collection - the HD Move-compatible port of both Chronicles games originally released on the Wii. Sorry, UK, Chronicles HD will cost you an extra quid, at £10.99.

The latest entry in the series, Resident Evil 6, is €24.99 (£19.99). Finally, a bundle that includes all of this is available for €69.99 (£59.99). No word on whether PlayStation Plus members will see additional discounts on these items, though we've contacted Sony for clarification.

Remember: the sale doesn't start until tomorrow, after the PlayStation Store update. Don't go accidentally buying any of this stuff now, because if there's one thing everyone knows about you, it's that you're totally not a chump at all.

Yoshida: DualShock 3 won't work with PS4

"No, [PS4] doesn't support DualShock 3, but it does support PS Move," Sony worldwide studios president Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed. Considering the design of the DualShock 4 and the functionality within, we can't say we're too surprised.

Obviously we knew about the PS Move compatibility, seeing as how it was featured during last night's event, but this is the first definitive word on DualShock 3 support. Last night Sony announced that PSOne, PS2 and PS3 games would be playable on PS4 through technology developed by Gaikai, but that PS3 discs would not work natively.

Sony patents 'Eyepad,' a Move-enabled PS3 tablet controller

It's important to remember, especially in situations like this, that the existence of a patent does not necessarily correlate to the existence of a product, or even a company's desire to build what it has patented. So, with that in mind, let's take a look at Sony's ridiculously named PlayStation 3 tablet controller patent.

The device Sony refers to as an "EyePad" in its patent application, seen in the sketch above, would theoretically come equipped with the usual trappings you'd expect from a PS3 controller: D-Pad, buttons, analog stick, SIXAXIS motion sensors, etc. The more interesting bits, however, are a bit harder to pick out from the drawing.

First of all, those shaded stripes on the edge are not a creamy nougat center, as we had originally surmised, but rather illuminated strips of LEDs or comparable light source. This would allow the EyePad, in conjunction with an EyeToy camera, to function as a PlayStation Move controller.

Secondly, those dots on either corner of the apparent display (which could actually be a normal display, touchscreen or Vita-esque touchpad, according to the filing) are paired stereoscopic cameras. The cameras are arranged in such as way that their respective fields of vision provide a full, 360-degree view of any object placed onto the surface of the EyePad's screen, allowing for objects to be fully scanned in three dimensions and then rendered in game. Theoretically the player could also place their face within this field, allowing for face mapping in character customization applications, for instance.

Again, we doubt this patent represents anything more than a combination of day-dreaming and butt-covering on the parts of Sony's engineers and legal department, respectively, but the ideas presented here are definitely interesting.

Journey, Walking Dead, Far Cry 3 lead BAFTA 2013 nominations

Journey scooped eight nominations in the British Academy of Film and Television's Games Awards this year. As if it hadn't won enough of the like, thatgamecompany's PS3 odyssey is a contender for BAFTA's Best Game award, competing with Dishonored, FIFA 13, Mass Effect 3, Far Cry 3, and The Walking Dead for the prize.

It's the two latter games that also lead the way in terms of nominations; Far Cry 3 received six nods, while The Walking Dead picked up seven, including two in the Performer category for Melissa Hutchinson and Dave Fennoy's respective portrayals of Clementine and Lee.

Dear Esther is also clearly popular at BAFTA HQ. The melancholic game, developed by indie studio thechineseroom, can boast a very impressive five nominations including ones in the British Game and Debut Game categories.

The full list of nominees is after the break. BAFTA's Games Awards take place on March 5.

Ballesteros and McIlroy join Tiger on Euro PGA Tour 14 cover

EA Sports recently announced Rory McIlroy and Seve Ballesteros as co-cover athletes for the European version of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14. Yes, Tiger Woods is on the cover of his game as well, but he's flanked by the legendary Ballesteros and current top pro golfer McIlroy this year, marking the first time the series has featured three athletes on its cover. Fingers crossed for a fourth face next year.

Woods will be joined by Arnold Palmer on the North American cover, while Bubba Watson and Bobby Jones will be featured on the Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14: The Masters Historic Edition cover. Check out our gallery below, which includes the full European box art. Tiger Woods 14 will arrive in North America on March 26, and will go international on March 28.

Sony and Kevin Butler actor settle lawsuit over Bridgestone ads

Sony and Jerry Lambert, the actor who plays Sony's eccentric Kevin Butler spokesman, settled their lawsuit. Lambert admitted his appearance in a Bridgestone commercial playing a Wii may have confused some consumers, thinking the Kevin Butler character endorsed both Nintendo and Sony.

Sony sued Lambert in October based on violations of the Lanham Act, misappropriation, breach of contract and tortious interference with a contractual relationship. Bridgestone denied that the Kevin Butler character appeared in any of its commercials, but removed Lambert from its ads.

As part of the settlement, Lambert agreed to not appear in any advertisements that feature or mention "any other video game or computer entertainment system or video game company" for two years. For two years after that, Lambert must notify Sony if he wants to appear in gaming ads so Sony can assess whether his intended performance will infringe on the Kevin Butler character.

Though Lambert and Sony settled, Sony and Bridgestone's lawsuit remains ongoing in the US District Court for the Northern District of California.

Sony patent shows redesigned Move with dangerous possibilities

Sony recently filed a patent that describes a method for determining the location of a PS Move-like controller through a sound capturing device. The patent describes the two-dimensional light-tracking that the current Move device uses in conjunction with sounds emitted from the controller, which would provide a gauge for the controller's "depth" in association with the sound capture device located on the TV.

What's more, the patent includes a number of pictures that show a Move-like controller with swappable face plates for different button setups, as seen after the break, as well as the ability to attach controllers together in a number of ways. Among the patent's illustrations is one depicting a child performing a bicycle kick while playing a soccer game with Move controllers attached to his hands and legs. Simulation sports games may never be the same.

LittleBigPlanet 2: Extras Edition coming to Europe in February

LittleBigPlanet 2: Extras Edition was recently announced for Europe, and is due to release in February. Extras Edition will include the original game along with three bonus level packs and a number of costumes for Sackboy to wear.

Of the packed-in level kits, the previously-released Cross-Controller Pack is included, which has players using their Vita systems to control Sackboy in the game. The other level packs bundled on the disc are the Move Pack: Rise of the Cakeling, which features PlayStation Move controls, and The Muppets Premium Level Kit. Move-supported Dance Magic boogies onto PSN January 8

Dance Magic is bringing its Move-supported jives to North America's PlayStation Network on January 8. From Planets Under Attack developer Targem Games, Dance Magic sees you employ the PS3 peripheral in a quasi-fighting style dance offs, all as part of a quest to save the world from "a rising evil," by using "biological energy that can only be realized by dancing." If you ask us, biological energy on the dance floor sounds like the kind of funk that has us reaching for air freshener, but maybe that's just when we dance.

Publisher Gaijin Entertainment says the game features seven dance styles, 20 music tracks, and co-operative shimmying for online strutters.

In the "Hit List" from the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, the video game industry's top talents describe their current gaming addictions, their most anticipated releases and more. This week: Quantic Dream's David Cage.

David Cage founded Quantic Dream in 1997, with the ambition of using interactivity as a new means of expression. He developed a creative vision based upon emotion, innovation and immersive storytelling. After his first video game Omikron featuring famous singer David Bowie, the game Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy) received great critical acclaim and won several awards worldwide. In 2010, Heavy Rain, a dark thriller produced by Sony, met critical acclaim and commercial success, selling over 2.3 million units to date. Heavy Rain was the winner of three Interactive Achievement Awards in 2011 (now called the D.I.C.E. Awards) - Outstanding Achievement in Visual Engineering, Outstanding Innovation in Gaming, and Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition

In 2012, Cage launched a new tech demo called KARA, featuring an android girl with an actress who delivered a stunning acting performance. Quantic Dream is currently in production of Beyond, a game written and directed by David Cage, starring actress Ellen Page. The game, produced by Sony exclusively on PlayStation 3, will be released in 2013.

In his forthcoming 2013 D.I.C.E. Summit session, Cage will be speaking on "The Peter Pan Syndrome: The Industry that Refused to Grow Up." In a significantly changing landscape dominated by franchises, where new devices with 89c games get more and more of consumers' attention, the video game industry is confronted with a massive challenge. A new console cycle is about to start, new business models and platforms appear while creativity and risk taking has never been lower.

The game industry, having always refused to grow up, is now confronted with a new dilemma: evolve or stagnate. The first and most important revolution to start is about content. Based on his experience and fifteen years in the industry developing original content, David Cage will explain in a passionate, thought-provoking presentation (with a French accent) his vision for content in the future and why he believes it is the key to expanding our market and finally become a mature industry.

Sony's 'Play Days' sale discounts PS3 accessories, Move bundles

Starting tomorrow, PlayStation 3 accessories (and even two actual games) will be discounted by up to 60 percent at participating retailers. The "Play Days" promotion, as Sony calls it, knocks dollar-dollar-bills-y'all off the MSRP of pretty much anything that plugs into a PlayStation 3, from Dual Shocks, to Move bundles, charging stations and media remotes. Wonderbook bundles and Sports Champions 2 will also receive holiday prices starting this Monday.

The promotion runs until Saturday, January 12, so folks buying stuff for the PS3 they received during whatever winter-time gift-giving holiday they celebrate will be able to save some scratch as well. Sportsfriends passes Kickstarter goal on last day [update]

The Sportsfriends have triumphed over the Legion of Budget Constraints. The local multiplayer game collection has passed its $150,000 Kickstarter goal, with $153,175 raised and six hours remaining as of writing.

Now that the Kickstarter goal has been met, the project will receive funding and therefore will exist on PS3 next fall, with PC, Mac, and Linux releases to follow. The collection includes upgraded versions of Johann Sebastian Joust, Hokra, BaraBariBall, and Pole Riders.

If you're still thinking about pledging, or increasing your pledge (as Notch did; his additional $3000 is what finally exceeded the goal), there are some recent additions to the rewards list you might want to know about. The $60 level has a bunch of new, exclusive indie games and prototypes, including a gamepad version of QWOP and a new game by Nifflas. The $100 tier offers one of a selection of t-shirts and one of the Joust controller charms seen above.

Update: After a surprisingly tumultuous final day, during which large pledges were suddenly pulled, the Kickstarter drive has officially ended at $152,451.
