The exhibit ran for six months, from March 16 - September 30, so that's well over 100,000 people per month critiquing the art from such games as <em>BioShock, Diablo 2, Donkey Kong, Fallout 3, Goldeneye 007, Doom 2, Minecraft, Jet Set Radio Future, Shadow of Colossus, Star Fox: Assault, Zaxxon</em> and tons more, all chosen by fans via some smooth Smithsonian voting.<br /><br />For reference, 686,406 people is slightly more than the entire country of Montenegro, more than six Grenadas, or 617,765 dollar-store items in Grenada (10 percent sales tax).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/02/heres-how-many-people-saw-the-smithsonians-art-of-games/">Here's how many people saw The Smithsonian's Art of Games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 02 Oct 2012 01:30:00 EST. "This has not made money yet, but it has the potential to be one of our core businesses in the future."<br /><br />Later, in a nod to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/07/report-shigeru-miyamoto-retiring-from-current-position-at-nin/">announcement</a>, reaction to, and eventual <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/08/nintendo-officially-denies-miyamotos-plan-to-step-down-within-n/">retraction</a> of the announcement of Miyamoto's eventual retirement, Miyamoto admonished the assembled shareholders. The user can then pick which route he'd like to take, reading tourist facts along the way.<br /><br />Nintendo has already infiltrated the museum scene with the 3DS giving guided tours in the Louvre, and it's doing a pretty great job, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/19/touring-the-louvre-with-a-3ds/">from what we hear</a>. There's no guarantee that a patent will translate to an actual product, but the thousands of infrared beams hovering over the Mona Lisa fulfills a few of our own spy fantasies, so we'll hope this one works out in some way.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/06/miyamotos-ds-patent-offers-upgraded-tourist-hunting-techniques/">Miyamoto's DS patent offers upgraded tourist hunting techniques</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 06 May 2012 15:30:00 EST. So, things are getting serious: They're going to play some video games.<br /><br />Starting this Friday afternoon, the museum will be hosting a marathon of various games, including <em>Super Metroid, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Fallout 3</em>, and <em>Resident Evil 3</em>, along with a few other classics. The event will be streamed on <a href="http://themade.org/">the museum's website</a>, and the goal is to raise $1,000 for every game that's defeated on the stream. If more money than the $20,000 goal is raised, they'll keep playing until one game is beaten for every $1,000 earned.<br /><br />All the funds raised will go to the Museum, to keep up the collection there and continue all of the programs the organization hosts (including, just recently, <a href="http://themade.org/node/106">one of the locations for MolyJam</a>). MADE is <a href="http://www.themade.org/node/84">accepting donations</a> from now through the marathon this weekend.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/23/museum-of-art-and-digital-entertainment-to-raise-money-through-g/">Museum of Art and Digital Entertainment to raise money through games marathon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Apr 2012 20:45:00 EST. I just happened to be in the neighborhood this week while on a month-long trek across Europe, so I paid my 5 &euro; along with the 10 &euro; museum admission for the audio guide, and was handed a Korean Air-branded black 3DS and a pair of headphones on the way to go see some of the world's finest art.<br /> <br /> The 3DS isn't the only portable device in use as a museum tour guide. While visiting the Mus&eacute;e d'Orsay last week, I was handed an iPod touch in a special security case, and walked around among the works of French impressionists while using Apple's device to hear insights in English. And I've used quite a few other audio guides on this trip - in London, Westminster Abbey and the Royal Observatory both used custom-made audio guide systems, with a keypad and a play button to choose certain audio tracks for various sights on the tour.<br /> <br /> But the 3DS was definitely the only gaming-specific device I've seen in use so far. And because of all of the various technologies included, specifically the wireless features, it actually did a great job.<br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/3ds-louvre-audioguide/">3DS Louvre Audioguide</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/3ds-louvre-audioguide/#4974633"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/3dslouvresized01-1334834073-1334864244_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/3ds-louvre-audioguide/#4974634"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/3dslouvresized02-1334834086-1334864247_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/3ds-louvre-audioguide/#4974635"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/3dslouvresized03-1334834100-1334864250_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/3ds-louvre-audioguide/#4974636"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/3dslouvresized04-1334834112-1334864252_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/3ds-louvre-audioguide/#4974637"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/3dslouvresized05-1334834120-1334864255_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/19/touring-the-louvre-with-a-3ds/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Touring the Louvre with a 3DS</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/19/touring-the-louvre-with-a-3ds/">Touring the Louvre with a 3DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Apr 2012 15:00:00 EST. The Museum of Art and Digital Entertainment will host its first exhibit in Oakland starting December 3. Appropriately for its first foray into a physical exhibition space, the museum is highlighting "The History of Early 3D." That's 3D as in polygons, not glasses. Think <em>Star Fox</em> and <em>Doom</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/29/made-museum-delves-into-early-3d-games/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MADE museum delves into early 3D games</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/29/made-museum-delves-into-early-3d-games/">MADE museum delves into early 3D games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 29 Nov 2011 23:00:00 EST. We know -- you <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/14/vote-on-games-for-smithsonians-the-art-of-video-games-exhibit/">were going to vote</a> for the Smithsonian's <a href="http://www.artofvideogames.org/">Art of Video Games exhibit</a>, but then your cat got lost, you had extra homework to do and your collection of various Mario figurines needed organizing. But just in case you hadn't made plans to get your vote in by Thursday, you're in luck: the voting deadline has been extended to April 17, through the third Sunday of this month.<br />
<br />
The vote is trying to narrow down the list to just 80 games set to be featured in an exhibition at the famed museum right around this time next year, so you'll be helping to make history with your choices. Joining in to vote also sets you up to get advance notification about the winning games, as well as behind-the-scenes information about the exhibit as it's shown off at the Smithsonian and then toured around the country. So go, vote now -- <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/chrono-trigger"><em>Chrono Trigger</em></a> isn't going to pick itself!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/06/smithsonian-extends-voting-on-art-of-video-games-exhibit-through/">Smithsonian extends voting on Art of Video Games exhibit through April 17</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 06 Apr 2011 08:45:00 EST. The debate over whether games are art will no doubt still be unsettled when the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. puts them on exhibit -- as art! -- on March 16, 2012. The choice of which games will be on display is being left up to the public to decide, with voting open at <a href="http://www.artofvideogames.org/">artofvideogames.org</a> through April 7, 2010.<br />
<br />
The exhibit will feature 80 games and 20 platforms, "from the Atari VCS to the PlayStation 3," spanning five eras: "Start," "8-bit," "Bit Wars," "Transition" and "Next Generation." It's slated to run through September 20, 2012. 240 games are on the ballot, which was vetted by a panel of industry vets. The exhibit's site also features forums where the especially passionate gamers among us can "campaign for particular games and voice their opinions about the selections."<br />
<br />
Now, if you'll excuse us, we have some campaigning to do for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/50-cent-blood-on-the-sand">BotS</a></em>.<br />

Paris recently added <a href="http://www.grandearche.com/musee-du-jeu-video/">La Mus&eacute;e du Jeu Vid&eacute;o</a> (The Museum of Video Game) to its long list of museums housing world famous works of art. For &euro;10 ($13.38), Parisians and visitors to the city can explore the history of games on the roof of La Grande Arche de la Defense -- that's only &euro;0.50 more than the price of admission to Le Louvre (&euro;10)! <br />
<br />
Since the museum opened on April 14, a few of its first visitors have documented their experience. French newspaper <a href="http://www.20minutes.fr/diaporama/1107">20 Minutes</a> has a smattering of images and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/bsyphillis">YouTube user "bsyphillis"</a> shot a couple videos of the museum's console displays (embedded after the break), both enticing us to skip out on this whole "Joystiq thing" and hop a plane to France this evening. Even if you're not so into video games (wait, why are you reading this site?), La Grande Arche offers some fairly impressive views of the city, making it significant other/family-friendly. If you visit, feel free to buy us a <em>totally sweet t-shirt</em>.<br />

From March 16, 2012 until September 9, 2012, the US's popular Smithsonian museum will be showcasing something patrons aren't used to seeing in such an environment: video games. Sure, we've seen <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/15/joystiq-goes-to-i-am-8-bit/">video game art exhibitions</a> before, but the Smithsonian exhibit will attempt to be "the first to examine comprehensively the evolution of video games themselves as an artistic medium." <br />
<br />
The exhibit, <a href="http://www.americanart.si.edu/exhibitions/archive/2012/games/"><em>The Art of Video Games</em></a>, will feature game footage, video interviews with artists and game developers, a history of game consoles and even a few consoles for visitors to play. The museum will also welcome suggestions from attendees and tap <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Melissinos">Chris Melissinos</a> as guest curator for the exhibit. Our first suggestion for the Smithsonian: hit up Krix for some of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/03/how-to-make-a-portal-gun-replica-hint-its-not-easy/">his</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/23/bioshock-cosplay-recreates-rapture-at-the-aquarium/">amazing</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/26/joystiq-interview-harrison-krix-video-game-replica-designer/">props</a>.<br />

New Hampshire may be synonymous with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laconia_Motorcycle_Week">annual biker rallies</a> and kick starting Presidential primaries, but in our industry it's known as the mecca for classic video games. FunSpot, home of the American Classic Arcade Museum, sits comfortably near Laconia, New Hampshire, a small town that welcomes families looking for a wholesome adventure away from home -- and droves of gaming enthusiasts, of course.<br /> <br /> The American Classic Arcade Museum is a non-profit organization committed to the promotion and preservation of coin-operated games and their associated history. The museum acts as the first floor to the three-storey mecca called FunSpot, established in 1952 by Bob Lawton and named "Largest Arcade in the World" by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guinness_World_Records" title="Guinness World Records">Guinness World Records</a> in 2008. We recently had an opportunity to tour the giant complex, which sports a bingo hall, mini-golf, 20 lanes of 10-pin bowling, and over 300 arcade machines ranging from the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/funspot-american-classics-videogame-museum/1523598//full">first coin-op</a> to modern day <span style="font-style: italic;">Daytona</span> racers.<br /><br />Check out the highlights of our visit after the break, and make it a point to stop by the place if you're ever in Laconia. It's the only <em>safe</em> way to travel back in time.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/funspot-american-classics-videogame-museum/">FunSpot / American Classic Arcade Museum</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/funspot-american-classics-videogame-museum/#1522388"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/111fspot-entrance_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/funspot-american-classics-videogame-museum/#1522393"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/11fspot-sign_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/funspot-american-classics-videogame-museum/#1522389"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/111fspot-sloganmat_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/funspot-american-classics-videogame-museum/#1522392"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/11fspot-museummotto_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/funspot-american-classics-videogame-museum/#1522391"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/11fspot-classicssign_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/28/joystiq-visits-funspot-and-the-american-classic-arcade-museum/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq visits: FunSpot &amp; The American Classic Arcade Museum</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/28/joystiq-visits-funspot-and-the-american-classic-arcade-museum/">Joystiq visits: FunSpot &amp; The American Classic Arcade Museum</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Apr 2009 22:00:00 EST. We'd wager that the first time the gaming community collectively booted up Running With Scissors' Gary Coleman-rich urination sim, <em>Postal 2</em>, we all shared the same thought: that this game absolutely <em>needs</em> to be showcased in some sort of museum commemorating mankind's greatest accomplishments. If memory serves, <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/postal2">many of the title's reviews</a> included similar sentiments.<br /><br />Finally, that observation is being realized. Sweden's Nobel Museum, whose galleries are littered with installations denoting the achievements of Nobel laureates (as well as the life of the prize's progenitor, Alfred Nobel), <a href="http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2009/01/28/nobel-prize-museum-shows-postal-2/">will be including <em>Postal 2</em></a> in a new <a href="http://bum.net/pics/xzibit.jpg">exhibit</a> titled "Freedom of Speech: How Free is Free?" The game will be included in a section that focuses on censorship in the video game industry. The <a href="http://www.danacentre.org.uk/">Dana Centre</a>, part of the Science Museum in London, will host an event on the 26th called "Play Away the Calories" which is centered around a certain exercise-based game. That's right: <em><strike>Super Team Games</strike> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Wii-Fit/">Wii Fit</a>.</em> Exercise expert Tim Cable will speak and will also measure calories burned during <em>Wii Play </em>sessions versus other exercises, and versus normal video games. Other speakers will discuss the obesity problem and the history of health-conscious gaming. Attendees will also get a chance to step onto the Balance Board and try out <em>Wii Fit.</em><br /><br />We think we can already predict favorable results for the experiment, thanks to Nintendo's sponsorship of the event. It still sounds like an interesting exhibit, and it's at least an opportunity to play <em>Wii Fit</em> if you happen to be in town.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/18/wii-fit-to-be-tested-at-londons-science-museum/">Wii Fit to be tested at London's Science Museum</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 18 Mar 2008 20:00:00 EST. Going to the science museum? Boring. Going to the science museum to play video games? Excellent! At least that's what we took away from an <em><a href="http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/orange/orl-otronicon2108jan21,0,1830689.story"><em>Orlando Sentinel</em></a></em><a href="http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/orange/orl-otronicon2108jan21,0,1830689.story"> article</a> on<em> </em>The Orlando Science Center's third annual <a href="http://www.otronicon.org/">Otronicon gaming event</a>.<br /><br />The conference, which just closed to the public, brought in a record 3,000 game players on Saturday as part of an expected 18,000 attendees total. The throng did more than just play over 100 displayed games, though -- they attended exhibits focused on the therapeutic benefits of gaming, workshops on game development and even performances by the Orlando Magic dancers (the last of which we can only assume was somehow game-related).<br /><br />Though the event is now closed to the public, some lucky youngsters will get to attend school field trips to the event over the next few days, which makes us extremely jealous. The best field trip we took in grade school was to the box factory. Or was that <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bart_Gets_Famous">The Simpsons</a></em>? We can't remember, honestly.<a href="http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/orange/orl-otronicon2108jan21,0,1830689.story"></a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/22/orlando-museum-attracts-record-numbers-with-gaming-convention/">Orlando museum attracts record numbers with gaming convention</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Jan 2008 19:00:00 EST. CONFIRMED: <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/09/vc-friday-straightforward-killing/">Namco Museum Remix</a></em> continues to be insane. Not that we expected them to, but Namco did <em>not</em> go back and change <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galaga">Galaga</a></em> back to regular <em>Galaga.</em> We are still living in a world where a description of <em>Galaga </em>can include the phrase "Pac-Man rolls on a tube in outer space." <br /><br />This is the "new" <em>Galaga</em> in which, instead of shooting from a ship at the bottom of the screen, you shoot the alien ships by pointing and shooting at them with the Wiimote, shooting-gallery style, and you can also use the analog stick to make Pac-Man jump.<br /><br /><em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rally-X">Rally-X</a> </em>was still <em>Rally-X</em>, but with speed boosting, which seems like an okay addition. These were still the only two playable games, so we'll have to wait to see how Namco is <strike>ru</strike><strike>ining</strike> updating the rest of their classics.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/13/e307-namco-museum-remix-is-still-weird/">E307: Namco Museum Remix is still weird</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Jul 2007 15:35:00 EST. We remember feeling quite special about the Playstation versions-- they were the <em>real</em> versions of <em>real arcade games! At home! </em>But now the <em>Namco Museum </em>series is, itself, old. How old?<br /><br /><em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyrie_No_Densetsu">Valkyrie no Densetsu</a> </em>(1989) was eight years old when it was released on <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namco_Museum#Namco_Museum_Volume_5">Namco Museum Vol. 5</a>.</em> The original <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namco_Museum">Namco Museum</a> </em>Playstation game is eleven years old. In other words, <em>Namco Museum</em> is now older, in relative terms, than a game that was old enough for <em>Namco Museum.</em><br /><br />Speaking of the Playstation editions, the new <em>Namco Museum DS </em>has something not seen since those days: an actual museum mode, in the form of a trophy collection and music player, as well as scanned instructions and flyers. <em><br /><br /></em>Relatively newer features include bottom-screen maps and hints for <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galaga">Galaga</a> (?), <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xevious">Xevious</a>, </em>and <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tower_of_Druaga">The Tower of Druaga</a>.</em> Of course, the most exciting relatively-new thing is <em>Pac-Man Vs.</em>, which, now that it won't require so much of a financial outlay, we may actually try with another person.<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/09/namco-museum-screens-are-as-new-as-namco-museum-screens-can-be/">Namco Museum screens are as new as Namco Museum screens can be</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 09 Jul 2007 11:30:00 EST. <div align="left">Game|Life's Chris Kohler played the wacky reinterpretation of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/09/vc-friday-straightforward-killing/"><em>Galaga</em></a> found on the new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/18/namco-goes-insane-after-too-many-namco-museum-releases/"><em>Namco Museum Remix</em></a>, and somehow came out of it cogent enough to describe the surreal experience. Basically, Pac-Man is rolling down a slide in space, <em>for some reason</em>, and players have to protect him by shooting the Galaga ships that come down to attack him <em>for some reason</em>. You aim at the little ships with the Wiimote pointer. If <a href="http://www.gamesetwatch.com/2006/08/column_parallax_memories_galag.php"><em>Galaga '88</em></a> was Galactic Dancing, this is Galactic-- okay, we don't know what it is. We're still pretty confused about the whole idea.<br /></div>
</div>
<br />Kohler also played <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rally-X"><em>Rally-X</em></a>, which was basically a 3D remake of the original arcade game (which itself is basically <em>Pac-Man</em>). While <em>Galaga </em>is rife with Wiimote integration, <em>Rally-X</em> is more staid and relies on the analog stick and shoulder buttons.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/18/namco-museum-remix-galaga-rally-x-details/">Namco Museum Remix: Galaga, Rally-X details</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 18 Jun 2007 13:00:00 EST. The major complaint about Namco's <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/103-2204069-1167800?url=search-alias%3Daps&amp;field-keywords=namco+museum&amp;Go.x=0&amp;Go.y=0&amp;Go=Go"><em>Museum</em> series</a> of retro compilations is that they're just <em>too faithful</em> to their arcade counterparts. People don't want exact arcade translations anymore, they want games remade unrecognizably in 3D! They want Pac-Man randomly inserted into every game!<br /><br />At least, that seems to be Namco Bandai's thinking. Either that or they weren't sure how else to rerelease <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/14/vc-monday-madness-more-ninja-than-you-can-shake-a-shuriken-at/">games</a> they're already <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/09/vc-friday-straightforward-killing/">selling</a> on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/virtual-console">Virtual Console</a>. The result is <em>Namco Museum Remix</em>, a set of Namco classics, now with more waggle, depth, and Pac! The remixed games include <em>Galaga, Pac-Motos, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rally-X">Rally-X</a>, Gator Panic, </em>and <em>Pac 'n Roll</em>, which is apparently a classic now despite not even being two years old. For that matter, <em>Gator Panic</em> seems to be based on a <a href="http://mobilegamefaqs.com/gameinfo.php?id=139&amp;name=Gator+Panic">cell phone game</a> which is itself based on the Whack-a-Mole like redemption game, and we have no idea what <em>Pac-Motos</em> was originally. Interesting what passes for "classics" these days!<br /><br />In addition to the remixes, the collection includes <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cutie_Q">Cutie Q</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dig_Dug">Dig Dug</a>, Galaxian, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaplus">Gaplus</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mappy">Mappy</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pac_%26_Pal">Pac &amp; Pal</a>, Pac-Mania,<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Pac-Man"> Super Pac-Man</a>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Xevious/">Xevious</a>. We poke fun at Namco for selling the same games over and over again, but this is an okay selection of somewhat less common stuff! Sorry to everyone who bought NES <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/12/vc-friday-lackluster-week-for-downloadable-games/"><em>Xevious </em></a>on the Virtual Console.<br /><br />Check out our gallery of screens from the remixed games. Some are faithful, like <em>Rally-X,</em> and others are completely incomprehensible, like the image at the top of this post, which is supposed to be <em>Galaga.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/namco-museum-remix/">Namco Museum Remix</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/namco-museum-remix/#444222"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/1p_07_pacn_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/namco-museum-remix/#444221"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/1p_06_motos_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/namco-museum-remix/#444220"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/1p_05_galaga_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/namco-museum-remix/#444219"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/1p_03_pacn_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/namco-museum-remix/#444218"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/1p_01_galaga_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/18/namco-goes-insane-after-too-many-namco-museum-releases/">Namco goes insane after too many Namco Museum releases</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 May 2007 12:20:00 EST. See, the store held a six-day "Nintendo Museum" as part of its celebration of being in business for 100 years. Of course, people showed up by the boatload to the museum event, both young and old, causing us to be filled with great anger towards our HQ right now (why can't it be in Japan?!). Then again, it's probably best that we didn't attend, because we're not sure how much jail time one would serve for trying to run out of the store with arms full of Game &amp; Watch handhelds, but we're sure it's definitely enough time in the slammer.<br /><br /><strong>See also:</strong><br />

We've seen <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/03/ds-as-tour-guide/">some</a> of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/13/japanese-english-dictionary-for-ds/">this</a>, but the phenomenon has been largely exclusive to Japan. The DS has been used in museums, and a number of language-training edutainment titles have been designed for the system. So our <a href="http://dsfanboy.com/tag/dsd">question</a> today is: what other creative, non-gaming uses (besides the browser) could you see for the DS, and is it something you'd really go for? Certainly homebrew fills some of those possibilities, but we know a lot of you aren't into that (for various reasons). So if you had to spend money on it, would you use the DS in other capacities?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/01/ds-daily-possibilities/">DS Daily: Possibilities</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 01 Feb 2007 09:00:00 EST. This time, visitors to the M.C. Escher show at Shibuya's Bunkamura entertainment complex were handed customized DS Lites that offered interactive content only a touch away. The DS content included floor maps, audio tours, and actual reproductions of the artworks themselves, so that patrons could zoom in for the fine details. Escher's unusual works probably don't need any help when it comes to being interesting, but the inclusion of a DS would certainly make any art exhibit more fun -- and more personalized, which is something trips to the museum often lack.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/03/ds-as-tour-guide/">DS as tour guide</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 03 Jan 2007 15:33:00 EST. Well, one fine blogger recently went to one of said museums and documented the efficiency of the communion between museum and DS. <br /><br />With access points set up in every room, the DS automatically downloads data pertaining to all of the exhibits in the room, allowing the user to go through the menus to find information on whichever piece excites them the most. Seeing how well this has worked for one blogger, we'd like to see this make its way out of Japan to other territories, as well.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/30/ds-as-a-tour-guide-documented/">DS as a tour guide documented</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 Oct 2006 14:15:00 EST. A good move for Nintendo, the console is now able to get into the hands of more people and increase exposure, however we're not sure they can even increase exposure that much in Japan due to the country's rabid obsession with the handheld. <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://ds.qj.net/DS-Lite-will-guide-Japan-s-museum-visitors/pg/49/aid/68913">QJ</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/10/ds-lite-used-to-guide-museum-denizens/">DS Lite used to guide museum denizens</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Oct 2006 13:00:00 EST.
