Mutant Mudds Deluxe for Wii U almost ready to be submitted

Developer Jools Watsham has tweeted that Mutant Mudds Deluxe, which was set to come to the Wii U this spring, has reached the final stage of development. Watsham says the game is currently being polished, and that it should be submitted to Nintendo for release later on this week.

The Deluxe version of the retro platformer will be playable directly on the Wii U's tablet controller, and will feature both the add-on content from the main game and new levels to play. If the game is submitted this week as planned, it should appear on the eShop soon after.

Mutant Mudds 2 is in progress

It's official: Renegade Kid is working on Mutant Mudds 2. Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham tells Twitter he hasn't kept the sequel a secret, but this is certainly the first we've heard it confirmed.

Mutant Mudds Deluxe, the Wii U version of Mutant Mudds, is coming to the Nintendo eShop in Q1 of this year, along with ATV Wild Ride 3D for 3DS. Mutant Mudds hit the 3DS eShop back in January, followed by a launch on PC in August and on iOS devices in November.

Mutant Mudds plops onto Wii U in Q1 2013, is 'even more unique'

Mutant Mudds on Wii U has a launch plan for Q1 2013, bringing unique content to the console, Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham tweets.

"Well, it's going to have even more unique content for a start! And, out Q1 2013," he says.

Watsham outed something called Mutant Mudds Deluxe on Wii U in September, giving us a single screenshot and nothing else, the tease. Mutant Mudds is already available for the 3DS eShop and PC, with an iOS version due this week. This could be one to look out for after getting a Wii U "for your family" (it's for you; don't lie) for the holidays, since we found the 3DS version to be worthwhile and "really frustratingly/enjoyably hard in the Mega Man tradition."

Mutant Mudds cleaning up on iOS next week

Mutant Mudds is coming to iOS on December 6. All 60 levels of Mutant Mudds, including the recently added unlockable stages, will be released on the App Store for 99 cents. The game is already available on 3DS and PC, with a Wii U version coming later as well.

We asked Renegade Kid creative director Jools Watsham about the controls - the biggest concern of any iOS port. "I am really pleased with how the virtual controls have worked out," he reassured us. "I had played a lot of platformers with virtual controls, and not enjoyed most of them due to the controls. I never want to look down at the controls and have found myself missing the buttons due to thumb drift."

The simple solution, Watsham said, was to make the touch zones for the controls larger than the controls actually appear on screen. "This might sound like an overly simplified solution, but I have found that it helps tremendously with the inevitable sloppy thumb slapping that happens with virtual controls." In addition, the control positions are customizable. Renegade Kid also has plans to update the app to support external controllers like the 8-bitty.

"I have played through all 60 levels numerous times and found it to be a pleasurable experience," Watsham said. "If the controls did not work out as well as they did, we would not have released the game. Mutant Mudds means too much to me to send it out in a bad state."

Mutant Mudds Deluxe coming to Wii U

In the chaos of the Nintendo Direct press briefing today, Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham posted the above picture of Mutant Mudds Deluxe for Wii U to his blog.

While Watsham recently revealed that Renegade Kid would be developing games for Wii U, we didn't know another incarnation of Mutant Mudds would be migrating to the upcoming Nintendo platform.

Mutant Mudds' extra PC content will come to 3DS for free, Renegade Kid an authorized Wii U dev

Mutant Mudds just came out on PC with new content, including extra difficult new levels. That content will be released on 3DS as a free update for the eShop release of that game, Renegade Kid director Jools Watsham revealed on his blog this week.

In addition, he also let slip that Renegade Kid is a licensed Wii U developer. "As we're being perfectly - and frankly - honest here; I would like to put the majority of our future development efforts into the 3DS eShop and Wii U eShop titles (we're authorized Wii U developers now btw - excite!)," he said.

Strangely, all of this information about Renegade Kid's primarily Nintendo-oriented plans comes from a post entreating fans to vote for the PC version of Mutant Mudds on Steam Greenlight. "Porting Mutant Mudds to the PC, and selling it on Steam, has the potential of bringing some much needed funds into Renegade Kid," Watsham notes, "which will go straight into the development of new games." And that's good for PC, 3DS, and Wii U owners.

PSA: Mutant Mudds on PC today

You don't have to wait for the collective to come to a decision on Steam Greenlight. You can get Renegade Kid's punishing, impressively 3D (even without stereoscopic effects) Mutant Mudds on PC today. It's up on GOG, Gamersgate, Desura, and will be available soon direct from Renegade Kid.

Even if you made it all the way through the 3DS version, there's new content, including "CGA-Land" levels like the brutal one above.

Bringing Mutant Mudds to PCs and into 'CGA-Land'

Renegade Kid's Mutant Mudds, the pixelated action game first released on 3DS - and a much more difficult game than its kid hero and water gun weaponry would suggest - is headed to PC on August 30. A trailer released alongside that announcement hinted at new levels, whose look recalls CGA computer graphics, joining the Game Boy and Virtual Boy-style bonus levels found in the 3DS game.

Renegade Kid director Jools Watsham wanted the new content to be "special," he told Joystiq. "When the thought of doing the classic PC look of the 80's crossed my mind, it was the obvious choice to go with." These new levels require the skills of unlockable character Grannie, who is only available after the completion of the main game.

Mutant Mudds coming to PC on August 30, starting at $7.99

Renegade Kid's indie platformer Mutant Mudds has gotten itself a PC launch trailer, a price ($7.99 as an introductory discount, usually $9.99), and a PC launch date, according to the official website. The game was previously seen on the 3DS eShop, and will arrive on the PC on August 30, with that introductory price lasting until September 5.

On the 3DS, Mutant Mudds made copious use of the 3D screen to transfer its hero in between the various platform levels, but on the PC version, there's an elegant blur effect instead. The retro graphics and tunes are still there, however. You'll be able to grab the game directly from Renegade Kid, or on Good Old Games, Gamers Gate, or Desura at the end of the month.

Renegade Kid's Mutant Mudds coming to PC

Developer Renegade Kid's eShop downloadable action game, Mutant Mudds, will soon be making its way to PCs everywhere. While no specific dates have been given, Renegade Kid promises that it will "soon be available through numerous digital distribution partners." The PC version, known as the "Grannie Edition" will feature 20 brand new levels in addition to the original 40.

We quite liked the 3DS version, notably the 3D mechanic used to switch between different planes. PC players, especially fans of difficult action games, should definitely take note.

NintendoWare Weekly: Mutant Mudds demo

The most noteworthy digital release this week on Nintendo systems is a demo of a game that came out in February. Yes, that means it's a really slow week, but to be fair Mutant Mudds is very worth trying.

DSiWare's sole release is '90s Pool, which, as far as we can tell, is "'90s" only because the words "'90s Pool" are on the top screen at all times. Where's Luke Perry? Where's the Ace of Base cover music?

The only inconvenient part of it is finding the right games to buy -- and that's where we come in, with our Portabliss column. In each installment, we'll tell you about a downloadable game on the iPhone, iPad, Android device, DSi, 3DS, PSP, etc. Today: Mutant Mudds.

I keep reading reports that Mutant Mudds isn't terribly long, with some players getting through it in 4 hours or so. I consider that unprovable hearsay, because there's no way I'll ever finish it. It's really frustratingly/enjoyably hard in the Mega Man tradition.

NintendoWare Weekly: Mutant Mudds, Mario & Sonic, Flush the Goldfish

As promised, another 3DS demo is available on the eShop, this time for Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. It may not have zombies, but then, it may have Waluigi. Renegade Kid's Mutant Mudds, its first self-published project, is also up on the eShop this week, offering challenging platforming and shooting and some dramatic 3D effects.

DSiWare features a sequel to the indie game Flipper; though if you played it, you still won't recognize Flipper 2: Flush the Goldfish. The original was an isometric puzzle game about reshaping environments ... and the sequel is a side-scrolling action game that uses one contextual button!

Kid Icarus: Uprising, Mario Party 9, more coming in Q1 2012

Nintendo dropped its Q1 lineup on us this morning, offering highlights like the inexplicably GameStop-exclusive Circle Pad Pro and the best news of the year. But there's a lot more in the lineup than those two items -- for example, we now have a specific release date for Masahiro Sakurai's 3DS Kid Icarus: Uprising: March 23.

On the 3DS eShop, Nicalis's ports of indie hits VVVVVV and NightSky are scheduled for eShop sometime in Q1, as is WayForward's Mighty Switch Force, a port of Zen Pinball, and Mutant Mudds. Nintendo will bring Kirby's Block Ball to the Virtual Console in the quarter as well.

Mario Party 9 will launch on Wii March 11, preceded on February 27 by PokePark 2: Wonders Beyond. The only listed WiiWare title is, again, from Nicalis: La-Mulana sometime in the quarter. The DS lineup is ... light, with only the February release of Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 really worth mentioning. But you can see the full list of announced releases on all three platforms, after the break.
