Rubin will report directly to chairman and CEO Brian Farrell.

Additionally, senior vice president of Core Studios Dave Davis is exiting the company. Bilson, Davis, and the "Core Games" group at THQ lead the charge in recent years on THQ's rebranding (including the logo you see above) from a licensed-game publisher to one developing and publishing what Bilson and co. considered "core" franchises (Warhammer 40K, Saints Row, and Red Faction among others). The move is especially odd considering THQ's continuing initiative to develop "AAA 'Core' games for multiple platforms."

As for Rubin's appointment, that's distinctly less odd - he helped create one of the game industry's most successful development studios. "Jason's proven track record in the industry speaks for itself, and he is one of the brightest minds in the business," Farrell said of Rubin's appointment. As for Bilson, Farrell noted his "significant contributions" and thanked him.
THQ's Danny Bilson exits as Jason Rubin takes prez spot originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 29 May 2012 17:09:00 EST. Naughty Dog's latest game, The Last of Us, aims to leverage the studio's sophisticated technology and credible presentation to forge a more intense connection between players and their on-screen avatars. If it succeeds, your actions will stem from the same paranoia, hesitation and fierce bravery coming from Joel and Ellie, two survivors of modern civilization's mysterious closure.
Continue reading The Last of Us demo offers a first look at Naughty Dog's direction

The Last of Us demo offers a first look at Naughty Dog's direction originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 16 May 2012 19:30:00 EST. Well, the promise of more updates in the future, at any rate.

In addition to an Advanced Settings menu and various other gameplay tweaks, Patch 1.11 reintroduces two features from Uncharted 2's multiplayer functionality: The Lab and Elimination Mode. The Lab, which is more of a playlist than a gameplay mode itself, contains unique variants of other multiplayer modes. It's set to launch with a T-bolt/Pistole-only version of Team Deathmatch, with "other game types" to be added "as the year progresses," according to Naughty Dog's patch notes.

Elimination Mode splits players into two teams of five, with the obvious goal being to eliminate the opposing team. Unlike Team Deathmatch, however, players do not respawn during Elimination Mode matches - victory is claimed once one team has been fulled killed three out of five times.
Uncharted 3 Patch 1.11 brings back Elimination Mode, 'The Lab' originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 12 May 2012 19:30:00 EST. Speaking with Gamasutra, Lemarchand said he's leaving his current job (of eight years) at Naughty Dog - creators of Crash Bandicoot, Uncharted, and The Last of Us - in order to take on new challenges at the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California.

"In other words, I'll be surrounded by awesome people, talking craft and philosophy, and building strange new things," Lemarchand said of his new role as professor at the Interactive Media Division at UC. "It seems like a natural transition point," he added. "I was involved with the development of the Uncharted series not quite from the beginning, but almost ... and even though the Uncharted series isn't intended to be viewed as a trilogy, maybe there's something about the number three that felt ... there is a certain amount of completeness for me."

But when will the next transition happen, from daring professor to daring professor slash extreme archaeologist? Sooner than we imagined, it seems. Lemarchand's first order of business is a three-month backpacking excursion that'll take him around the globe. After that, he'll begin work on a "series of experiment games," aimed at exploring "procedural narrative," among other things. After that, we're hoping he takes on the Nazis in their own zeppelin.
Uncharted lead Lemarchand exits Naughty Dog to become more like Indiana Jones originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 30 Apr 2012 12:15:00 EST. Naughty Dog shared almost no information beyond the name, and expects us to extrapolate more from the screenshot above. If we had to guess, given the name, it's about making sure Drake and Elena stay out of the sun and wear proper sunblock while they're on holiday.

The tease for the new mode comes as the company preps the $10 "Multiplayer Flashback Map Pack #2" for tomorrow, February 21. Game director Bruce Straley and creative director Neil Druckmann let slip a few details about combat mechanics in a video interview with Game Informer: Health will not automatically regenerate; Ellie, your AI companion, will be intelligent enough to throw bricks and other materials at your enemies, and she won't break your "stealth" mode; and it may include Uncharted-esque playable cinematics, but in more intimate environments.

Straley and Druckmann discuss combat moments as part strategy, part shooter, and say they're infusing the title with realistic reactions from NPCs and the protagonist alike. The game is set 20 years after an apocalyptic fungal outbreak has decimated human society; what little humanity still exists has been relegated to military-controlled quarantine zones that operate under a brutal martial law.

Joel, our grizzled protagonist, is a black-market jack-of-all-trades in his late 40s, emotionally broken by the catastrophe and living his daily life at the edges of his waning moral boundaries. He is contracted by an unknown third party to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie outside of the quarantine zone she was born in, and as events unfold the pair find themselves trapped in the wilds of the dystopian, fungal zombie-filled wastelands, unable to return to the (relative) safety of the military zones.

Despite how jaded he has become, Joel cannot abandon Ellie to the ruins of the world, prompting an all-or-nothing expedition to a secret safe haven beyond the military's grasp. Sounds kind of like Resident Evil 4 meets The Dark Crystal meets the Will Smith version of I Am Legend. According to a Game Informer interview (quoted by VG247), Naughty Dog looked into a new Jak & Daxter game on PS3. "I don't know if this is going to make [fans] happy or sad," but we did explore the idea fairly extensively," company co-president Evan Wells said. "Something that we talked about early on was, 'Lets go back and apply what we've learned with the Uncharted games to Jak & Daxter.'"

Wells and the team realized, however, that an experimental Jak game wouldn't satisfy the fans, and working on a game like its predecessors wouldn't satisfy Naughty Dog. "We would end up limiting the direction that the company had this passion for while simultaneously not creating the game that fans wanted," he said. "We just realised we were going to just do everybody a disservice. So at that point, the conversations started to move in a new direction."

Wells suggested the possibility that the Uncharted team could work on the series. "I guess there's a possibility the Uncharted team could move on to Jak & Daxter. Because while Uncharted's Nathan Drake made the half-tuck famous, Last of Us' Joel has apparently gone full untuck in these screenshots over on Game Informer. Not. Kidding. Around.

Elsewhere in the screenshots, we can see that part of the game takes place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, so steel yourself for that (sorry). Weapons will break after being used in combat, so part of the challenge in wandering around the lush world is just staying armed. And that girl in the image above is Ellie, a teenager who will be following Joel around for part of his journey. Naughty Dog is working hard on her AI, and says she won't require a lot of micro-management while being escorted.

Game Informer promises 20 images of the game in its upcoming issue, but you can head to the website right now to see the other two shots on display. All of that buzz is attributable to the dramatic trailer used to announce the title.

Today, Naughty Dog released a behind-the-scenes making-of trailer for the announcement trailer. Within you'll see some of Naughty Dog's famous mo-cap work at play and probably suffer a bit of disappointment when you see Ashley Johnson in a mo-cap suit. Yes, we know you were expecting Ellen Page, but we're pretty sure Juno is totally dead in this post-apocalyptic future anyway.
The Last of Us announcement trailer broken down in making-of video originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 Feb 2012 18:15:00 EST. The PlayStation Blog announced that the package launches on February 7 and 22 in North America and Europe, respectively. The bundle will cost $39.99 in the Americas and €39.99 in Europe.

All the games have been reworked to feature 720p resolution, Trophies and stereoscopic 3D support. It's the closest many of us will ever get to being able to reach out and just throttle Daxter ... or pet him, whichever your preference over the past decade.
Jak and Daxter Collection hits NA Feb. 7, Europe Feb. 22 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 24 Jan 2012 21:30:00 EST. We don't know much about The Last of Us just yet, but the first several concept shots offer a sneak peek into what we can expect to learn in the coming months. Protagonist duo Joel and Ellie sneak their way past a mean-looking couple of gentlemen in a wrecked 7-11, hang out with deer on their way out of what looks to be San Francisco, and stop to rest by a fire while cracking jokes, all the while escaping from whatever those humanoid ... things were in the trailer.

The latest line from Naughty Dog on The Last of Us puts the duo in a world where the US population was "decimated by a modern plague," leaving only the most hardened survivors behind while nature reclaims man's crumbling structures. The relationship between Joel and Ellie is unclear, though Joel is only referred to as a "ruthless survivor" while Ellie is depicted as "a brave young teenage girl who is wise beyond her years." The gameplay repercussions of those characterizations seem to put Joel in the aggressor role while Ellie handles strategy and puzzles -- we're still not sure how that will play out in terms of player control, unfortunately. Single-player with an NPC partner? Switching off between the two? Co-op? We'll have to wait and see.

And though we're not sure why the two are doing so, they'll be trekking "across what remains of the United States" throughout The Last of Us. Here's hoping they find a good shower somewhere in the process! There was quite a lot of buzz surrounding the first new game revealed during the Spike VGAs this weekend, The Last of US. Decidedly void of smarmy characters and international espionage, The Last of Us instead focuses on two survivors trying to make their way across the country after a post-apocalyptic event. And, surprisingly, it's been in development for two years already, Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann revealed on Twitter.

Druckmann also revealed the two leads on the game are Troy Baker, the man voicing protagonist Booker DeWitt in BioShock Infinite, and Ashley Johnson, who is in fact not Ellen Page. Yeah, we were kinda surprised, too. The Last of Us also appears to be a Mature title -- the UK page suggests a PEGI rating of 18, the equivalent of a Mature ESRB rating here in The States, a first for Naughty Dog. Also a first at Naughty Dog: the existence of two separate teams. One team is working on The Last of Us, the other is working on other stuff, according to co-president Christophe Balestra.

Finally, the UK page suggests "no network play," which could mean the final game is a local-only affair. Of course, that could change in the lead-up to launch in 2012.
The Last of Us has been in development for two years originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 Dec 2011 16:30:00 EST.
Details of Naughty Dog's recently revealed post-apocalyptic horror show, The Last of Us, are still pretty slim, but we have learned a couple of things since the above trailer first debuted at Spike TV's own horror show, the annual Video Game Awards.

Joel, a rough-and-tumble survivalist, and Ellie, a teenager "wise beyond her years," must defend themselves against scavenging bands of humans (as well as the fungus among us) in what Sony describes as "a character driven story" that "blends survival and action elements," as our intrepid duo travels across America.

This could be good or bad, depending on how these two characters are implemented. We don't want to sound pessimistic, but we're concerned about the potential Resident Evil Zero-ness on our hands.
Continue reading Sparse The Last of Us story details emerge

Sparse The Last of Us story details emerge originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 11 Dec 2011 18:30:00 EST.
At tonight's VGAs, Sony and Spike finally quit teasing us and formally announced The Last of Us, the next game from Uncharted developers Naughty Dog. Set in an America ravaged by a horrifying fungal infection that has left a few survivors in a desperate struggle for survival, it's super unique and you never would have guessed I wrote this before it was officially announced or anything.

The trailer indicates a very Uncharted-looking bunch of people running from some very 28 Days Later(-meets-demonic-broccoli) looking infected. Color us excited. The Last of Us is due exclusively for the PlayStation 3 in 2012.

Update: The press release is out, linked at the Source link below, and the official site is up at www.lastofus.com. There's not much in the way of information, but the presser does note that "The Last of Us is developed by some of the industry's most talented game designers including Bruce Straley, game director, and Neil Druckmann, creative director." The plot description goes something like this: "Abandoned cities are being reclaimed by nature and the remaining survivors are killing each other for food, weapons and whatever they can get their hands on. Joel, a ruthless survivor, and Ellie, a brave young teenage girl who is wise beyond her years, must work together to survive their journey across what remains of the United States."

Sony confirms post-fungal-apocalypse title The Last of Us, due in 2012 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 10 Dec 2011 20:19:00 EST. Sounds like the $5 footlongs should be Nathan Drake's treat the next time we pull into our participating Subway restaurant. Sony's Asad Quizilbash tells Industry Gamers that over 13 million Uncharted games have been shipped to stores worldwide. What's more, the series is on a big upward trajectory, with week-one sales for Uncharted 3 doubling those of Uncharted 2.

Just think: For all the time Drake has spent shooting dudes and climbing around in pursuit of riches, the answer was there all along: Make a video game about yourself.

Of course, then he would just be making a game about a guy making a video game about a guy making a video game about a guy making a video game ... and so on into infinity. The snake would eat itself and the universe would collapse from the weight the endless feedback loop of cause and effect.

So ... maybe he should just stick to the shooting dudes and climbing. Yeah. That's best.
Uncharted series has shipped 13 million worldwide originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Dec 2011 11:25:00 EST. If you think Drake's marksmanship went awry between Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 3, you'll be pleased to hear Patch 1.02 is now available, bringing alternate aiming options to the single-player game. Naughty Dog concocted these changes with the aid of its community, which has been vocal about several reticule-ous issues since Uncharted 3 launched.

Patch 1.02 also makes several granular changes to the multiplayer gameplay and interface, and implements the cutscene viewer -- a perfect companion if the story was all a blur to you. Of course, if you prefer things all a-blur, you'll welcome the return of the game's previously "missing" motion blur effects.
Uncharted 3 patch adds alternate aiming, brings back cutscene viewer originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 28 Nov 2011 17:10:00 EST. An upcoming patch for Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception will help assuage concerns with the game's aiming. Fans have complained that shooting in Uncharted 3 feels "off" compared to the previous game, and dev studio Naughty Dog isn't shrugging off criticisms.

"I posted on the Neogaf forum where people were going through it [shooting criticisms] in a very eloquent fashion, really explaining their gripes very clearly, and I said 'Well, is anyone local that can come in and explain it to us?'" community manager Arne Meyer told Giant Bomb. Apparently two fans took up the challenge (as well as two of their friends), and assisted both game director Justin Richmond and multiplayer programmer Travis McIntosh in tweaking the game's shooting "feel" via on-the-fly playtesting at Naughty Dog's Santa Monica-based HQ.

The result is an optional tweak for the shooting that will arrive, alongside other fixes, in a game update at an undetermined point in the future. Thanks, articulate fans!
Uncharted 3 aiming tweaked in upcoming patch, in part due to dedicated fans originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Nov 2011 12:25:00 EST. If you went in on the $24.99 "Fortune Hunters" club membership for the multiplayer component of Uncharted 3, then your list of (already beefed up) character skins will be increased with today's PSN update. That's when the Helghast DLC arrives on the PlayStation Store, adding the Capture Trooper skin, ISA helmet and iconic Helghast helmet to your collection for free. If you're super into PS3 franchise mash-ups but didn't join the Fortune Hunters, you can pick up the pack for $1.49.
(Update: confirmed to IGN by SCEA.)

The Jak and Daxter HD Collection, which briefly popped up on a South African retail site last month, has now been rated by the German USK as Jak & Daxter Trilogy Edition. The game's title implies that it will be a compilation of the core Jak series. Sorry, Jak X racing fans.

For its part, Sony tells us it doesn't comment on rumor or speculation. The retail site that originally posted the game noted a January 2012 launch window, but that date could very well have been a placeholder.

And yes, we hold out the same hope that you do, for a compilation around our old buddies Ratchet and Clank.
Jak and Daxter Trilogy Edition rated in Germany (Update: Confirmed by SCEA) originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 09 Nov 2011 19:00:00 EST. You know, the problem with life is there aren't enough suspended train cars to climb and big burly dudes to fist-fight in a climactic struggle to survive aboard a giant cargo plane. Nope, life is PTA meetings, laundry and lots and lots of bills. But there's hope!

On PSN right now, you can download all three Uncharted soundtracks -- the first two games' score will set you back $5.99, though we suggest you wait it out until next week when both will be offered in a value bundle for $9.99. The Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception soundtrack is priced at $9.99 on PSN. If physical media is more your speed, you'll have to wait until November 15 to snag the Uncharted 3 soundtrack from Best Buy, Fry's, or Barnes & Noble. If you're an iTunes fan, you can grab it from there right now.

Or if you're low on cash, you can always go the budget route and rock a half-tuck.
All Uncharted soundtracks available for download on PSN originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 05 Nov 2011 09:00:00 EST. Players -- and critics -- don't always have an appropriate vocabulary with which to discuss less defined, mechanical aspects of games. Why does shooting feel right in one game, but wrong in another? We appear to have run into this problem of a lacking lexicon with Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, which some players say has introduced problematic aiming (i.e. something feels wrong), particularly in the single-player adventure.

Posting on the official Naughty Dog blog, community overlord Arne Meyer relayed information from game director Justin Richmond, who's able to speak more clearly on the technical performance of Drake's gun. "Aiming is identical to Uncharted 2 - we took a look at the values side by side. We did adjust the sensitivity to be MUCH higher in Uncharted 3 to give you a more precise feel. With Uncharted 2 it was pretty much guaranteed you would aim in one of the 8 directions and it was hard to deviate from that (imagine it being almost like a traditional 8-way arcade stick)." According to Richmond, "With Uncharted 3, you can deviate from the straight path from each of the 8 directions much easier and more precisely."

So, contrary to some complaints, sensitivity has gone up. However, enemies also change positions faster now, "which changes the flow of gun combat as well, from what you were used to if you're coming off fresh from Uncharted 2." We've had this same problem at Joystiq HQ, and believe that aiming assistance might be a tad too magnetic, slowing your reticle down when it gets near an enemy.

The most interesting part is that the gunplay in Uncharted 3 has been adjusted in another significant way. You might not have known it looking at him, but Drake's shots used to come out at weird angles. "In Uncharted 2 the bullets would leave the barrel at a pre-set deviation when you were aimed in," says Naughty Dog. "What this means is that the bullets would not fire straight out of the barrel all the time -- they could come out at an angle. Therefore, you could have a target clearly in the reticle and still miss it by a wide margin." In the sequel, "bullets now fire straight out of the barrel 100% of the time," though you need to adjust for recoil.

There's a question about which ultimately takes precedence: the informed explanation rooted in data and design, or the more nebulous discomfort of an aim that just feels ... off?
Naughty Dog responds to Uncharted 3 aiming concerns originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 03 Nov 2011 19:30:00 EST. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception creative lead and writer Amy Hennig isn't one to mince words, it would seem. On the latest episode of Geoff Keighley's "Bonus Round," Hennig and a cadre of other Naughty Dog leads speak in great detail about the process of building their latest, most ambitious project yet -- in just two years. "We absolutely killed ourselves on this project. I think this was the hardest thing any of us have ever done," Hennig asserts.

Game director Justin Richmond agrees, breaking down why the project was so hard on their team, beyond the aforementioned time constraint issues. "It's a lot of things. We didn't wanna let ourselves down, we didn't wanna let our fans down. We try to do things that no one's ever done before in a game," he says, referring to the game's massive moving environments and setpieces. It's also a measure of the game being the third entry in an established franchise. "I've worked on two 'third games,'" he says, "And they're always harder ... people expect a certain level of sophistication."

Finally, the most pressure came from the team itself. "We made it even harder on ourselves I think than it had to be, because compared to the previous games, we wanted it [Uncharted 3] to be perfect," Richmond concludes. And, at least from our perspective, the game certainly turned out to be not too shabby. You can find out for yourself right now as the game launches worldwide today.
Uncharted 3 was 'the hardest thing any of us have ever done,' says Hennig originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 01 Nov 2011 14:20:00 EST. How are the character animations of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception so darn lifelike? It's because they're the movements of real human beings, captured through some sort of ... witchcraft. Uncharted 3 game designer Robert Cogburn discusses multiplayer strategies and other goodies in this latest trailer for the most excellent adventure game available November 1. Also, Uncharted multi vets, don't get too mad about the blindfire comment.
Continue reading Uncharted 3 dev delivers multiplayer tips in latest trailer

Uncharted 3 dev delivers multiplayer tips in latest trailer originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 25 Oct 2011 02:00:00 EST. If you were to take all the good parts -- you know, "Oh, guys, you have to see this one part," or "Watch! Watch! My favorite part's coming up!" -- of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, and strip away all of the filler, you'd be left with the same game you had when you started. It's not one to play host to unextraordinary moments: Every plane must crash, every truck must flip and every ancient, long hidden civilization must be discovered (and, as a natural result, destroyed).

The sequence of events that propels Uncharted 3 from start to finish has clearly been the subject of the same brilliant centrifuge which separated wheat from chaff in the series' previous outings. The moments of thrilling peril which punctuate Uncharted 3's every chapter have been daisy-chained together with exhausting proximity -- they're so close, in fact, that it's sometimes a little difficult to see the thread that ties them all together.
If you're not swept away by the slick editing, exciting heroics and rousing score in this Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception launch trailer, we've got a different kind of commercial for you. It's never too late to pull Harrison Ford from the fridge for a bit of awkward celebrity endorsement.
Continue reading Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception launch trailer (plus: Harrison Ford?)

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception launch trailer (plus: Harrison Ford?) originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 19 Oct 2011 08:30:00 EST. Uncharted 3's "Fortune Hunters' Club" is really more of a "Bargain Hunters' Club," offering savings on future DLC for the latest Drake-shaker. It's the latest in the growing number of "season pass" DLC deals, offering a discount for the bundled pre-order of "the first four multiplayer map packs and the first three multiplayer skin packs."

All told, the $24.99 purchase gets you around $45 worth of content, Sony says, plus an exclusive theme and an XMB message service to keep you up with new DLC. If the kind of fortune you seek is "more Uncharted 3 stuff," then you can hunt for the pre-order link today on the PlayStation Store.
Uncharted 3 'Fortune Hunters' Club' is a DLC season pass originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 Oct 2011 13:50:00 EST. All retail copies of Uncharted 3 will include a code for entry into a Starhawk multiplayer beta that will be active sometime in early 2012.
Think of it as Sony's response to the persistent complaints that the Uncharted series doesn't have enough transforming mechs or mutant cults. Or, more realistically, think of it as more evidence that Sony's marketing plan will pack a beta of some first-party PS3 game with every other new first-party PS3 game from here on out.
Buying Uncharted 3 gets you into next year's Starhawk beta originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 12 Oct 2011 10:20:00 EST. We hope you like using that on-screen keyboard on your PS3. Sony confirmed in a statement today that Uncharted 3 will use the Online Pass system introduced earlier this year with Resistance 3. However, the same statement also specified that "Online Pass will be incorporated into... future Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios games with online functionality."

Similar to EA's Project Ten Dollar and other single-use code programs from other developers, Sony's Online Pass ties multiplayer functionality to the use of, er, a single-use code. While Sony didn't actually spell out Online Pass use "forever and ever," they did include a portentious "We will provide further information in the future."

We recommend a USB keyboard.

Sony implies all first-party titles to use Online Pass originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Oct 2011 00:00:00 EST. Sony is priming the Japanese audience for the release of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, helping them build familiarity with the series' story, not by cheaply re-releasing Uncharted 2 (though that did happen) but by cutting video of Uncharted 2 into a TV drama series.

The first seven-minute "UnchaTV" segment ran on October 4 at 12:53 am (today at 11:53 am Eastern), featuring four minutes of recut Uncharted 2 footage and three minutes of gameplay segments starring an actor and his on-screen girlfriend (who doesn't like games and, no doubt, will be shocked by how much she loves Uncharted). If you happen to have access to TV Tokyo, you can watch the continuation of the show four days a week through October 27.

This is one way to make a good adaptation of Uncharted!
Uncharted 2 becomes a Japanese TV show originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 03 Oct 2011 14:30:00 EST. A Jak and Daxter HD Collection has popped up on South African retailer BT Games' website. As Digital Spy notes, the retailer had a January 2012 release date on the fuller page (since removed), but that date could have been a placeholder. Sony has yet to confirm a Jak and Daxter collection.

An HD collection would likely include the three core entries in the Jak series, perhaps with kart racer Jak X as a bonus. Hm, we're probably using the word "bonus" there incorrectly, but let's roll with it.
