Naughty Dog, best known for the Uncharted series, has received near universal critical praise for its PS3 swan song <em>The Last of Us</em>. Our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/05/the-last-of-us-review/">review</a> gave it a perfect score, which doesn't mean the game is perfect, it just means that when <em>The Last of Us</em> launches next week, you won't want to be the last of us who plays it.

There was a moment in <em>The Last of Us</em> that was so serene I could have watched it forever. Protagonists Joel and Ellie were finally afforded a breath - a stitch of peace - and I hesitated to nudge them forward. The moment was so starkly different from all the violence that preceded it, so <em>beautiful</em> that it was painful. I could have let them stand there until the disc drive in my PS3 broke down, until the power went out or the world came to an end. The pair had been through so much, it seemed cruel to make them move on.<br />
<br />
The <em>Last of Us</em> has a curious inertia though - the stumbling, inevitable momentum of a man off balance - and I couldn't deny it. Those that don't have a copy of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/god-of-war-ascension"><em>God of War: Ascension</em></a> won't be able to play the free Outskirts level demo from <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-last-of-us">The Last of Us</a></em> until the game launches on June 14.  To alleviate the pains of said folks, YouTuber <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUdnt1zM-TY">HystericalGamez</a> uploaded a full 14-minute video of their playthrough of the demo.<br />
<br />
While watching the Outskirts level isn't the same as playing it, we recommend clicking the full-screen option and holding a PS3 controller while the demo video plays.  Be wary of your boss believing that you're playing games at work, though.<br />

Access the demo through Ascension's main menu, which will auto-direct to the PlayStation Store and queue up the download.<br />

The demo contains the Outskirts level of <em>The Last of Us</em>, where Joel, Ellie and Tess must take on multiple infected - including the clickers <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/04/infectious-sounds-of-terror-in-naughty-dogs-the-last-of-us/">we tussled with</a> earlier this year.<br />

<em>The Last of Us</em> is Naughty Dog's latest, the story of mankind's attempt to survive the fungi-infected remnants of an apocalyptic outbreak from two decades ago. In transitioning from PS3 to PS4 development, Naughty Dog will use its current in-house engine that powers PS3 game <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-last-of-us"><em>The Last of Us</em></a>. Naughty Dog game director Bruce Straley says this is in contrast to the studio's strategy transitioning from PS2 to PS3, where the developer scrapped its competent Jak &amp; Daxter engine in favor of an entirely new one for the first <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/uncharted-drakes-fortune"><em>Uncharted</em></a> game.<br />

"We scrapped everything at the beginning of <em>Uncharted 1</em>, and we had a perfectly good engine with the Jak &amp; Daxter franchise," Straley tells <a href="http://www.digitalspy.com/gaming/news/a485922/naughty-dog-will-use-existing-uncharted-the-last-of-us-engine-for-ps4.html">Digital Spy</a>. "We could have started with something there and then built off of it and only changed the pieces and parts as we needed, when we needed. And that really caused a lot of turmoil." Naughty Dog will now make modular adjustments to its existing tech as needed for story and game design.<br />

<em>The Last of Us</em> launches on PS3 June 14. Naughty Dog is venturing into single-player DLC for the first time with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-last-of-us"><em>The Last of Us</em></a>. The Uncharted developer announced the <a href="https://store.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/#!/en-us/games/addons/the-last-of-us-season-pass/cid=UP9000-BCUS98174_00-THELASTOFUSSEPAS">season pass</a> for its latest PS3 project this week, revealing it'll entitle buyers to three pieces of <em>The Last of Us</em> DLC, including one for single-player. The other two feature maps and other additions for the multiplayer, a mode which Naughty Dog has been very coy about. The game's season pass is priced $19.99, and Naughty Dog says that equates to a 30 percent saving on the individual pieces of DLC. In addition to the DLC, the season pass includes some 'Day 1 Bonuses,' namely a number of in-game upgrades and an "exclusive" 90-minute making of documentary called 'Grounded.' <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-last-of-us"><em>The Last of Us</em></a> launches on June 14, simultaneously on Blu-ray and as a download through PSN. Those who choose the latter route on PS3 will find the game playable once the download has reached 50 percent, Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann has told <a href="http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2013/05/16/the-last-of-us-will-release-be-released-digitally-same-day-as-retail.aspx">Game Informer</a>.<br />

It's our first taste of PS4-esque functionality, just on the PS3 - as you'll recall, one of the major features touted by Sony is the ability to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/20/ps4-allows-playing-games-as-theyre-downloading/">play games as they're downloaded</a>. This is accomplished on the PS4 through the use of hardware dedicated to background downloading and processing.<br />

The Joel and Ellie editions, both priced at &euro;79.99, are mirror images of each other, focusing on either protagonist of the game. The sets include art book, wallpaper, comic, soundtrack and SackBoy/Girl for <em>LittleBigPlanet</em>.<br />

Which, you know, is a pretty solid indication of <em>things to come</em>.<br /><br />The ESRB's rating summary for the game, while hilarious in the stilted, clinical way these things always are, also indicates that the Vita version of this collection should include all three games featured in the original. Since then, over 350,000 individuals worldwide have downloaded the free client.<br /><br />The news comes as part of a DLC announcement over on the <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/03/19/uncharted-3-oddball-dlc-out-today/">PlayStation Blog</a>, where Naughty Dog reveals it will offer new DLC every month until June, starting first with "Oddball" avatar accoutrements celebrating <a href="http://www.holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/March/extabductday.htm">Extraterrestrial Abductions Day</a>. "It's no longer designed in an ivory tower somewhere in Tokyo, it's shared with us, with [Uncharted developer] Naughty Dog, with Sony San Diego - and together we've built the machine."<br /><br />The Guardian posits developer consultation and discussions with publishers like Ubisoft led to the PS4 being designed in line with modern PCs, so devs could easily comprehend the hardware. Developer Naughty Dog says it needs a few more weeks to polish the game, in a statement on the <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/02/13/the-last-of-us-is-coming-in-june/">PlayStation Blog</a>:<br /><br />"As we entered the final phase of development for <em>The Last of Us</em>, we came to realise just how massive Joel and Ellie's journey is. But instead of cutting corners or compromising our vision, we came to the tough decision that the game deserved a few extra weeks to ensure every detail of The Last of Us was up to Naughty Dog's internal high standards.<br /><br />"As a team we pride ourselves on setting a very high quality bar for every aspect of our games - gameplay, story, art, design, technology and more. We want to make sure <em>The Last of Us </em>raises that bar even further - for ourselves, and most importantly, our fans.<br /><br />"The extra wait will be very short and your patience will be rewarded. Update your calendars. You won't even have to change seasons. <em>The Last of Us</em> will be available June 14, 2013. The fungus takes over an insect before it bursts from the host's body in an effort to spread its spores to other insects, wiping out colonies.</span><br /><br />Though first assumed to be an undead army, the infected in <em>The Last of Us</em> are living humans. Each stage of the infection modifies their physical and mental capacity. People in the first stage of infection - referred to as Runners - know in their hearts and minds that their instinct to attack uninfected survivors is wrong, but they cannot control the impulse to harm life around them. Later stages of the infection offer encounters with more ghastly creatures. At stage three, the infection blinds hosts and turns them into 'Clickers,' agressors with faces bloomed in blood and gore. Sights and Sounds comes with the game's original soundtrack from Oscar-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla, a dynamic theme for PS3, and the Winter Joel and Winter Ellie PSN avatars.<br /><br />The Post-Pandemic Edition, shown below, is available only at <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/browse?nav=16k-last+of+us,135">GameStop</a>, and it includes the steelbook case and <em>American Dreams </em>comic from the Survival Edition. The bulk of its price seems to come from a 12-inch statue of Joel and Ellie from Project Triforce, which has an estimated retail value of $200. The goofy "present head" hat above is only the beginning - there's also a t-shirt with Naughty Dog Co-President Christophe Balestra as an elf that everyone gets for free.<br /><br />And the wildest thing is a "Block Mesh Lab map," made completely of polygons by former Naughty Dog Richard Lemarchand (who's now teaching interactive media at USC). It's quite funky, especially when you imagine the relatively realistic forms of Nathan Drake and friends wandering around it with guns. All of these items are free for all players in the game right now until January 8, after which they'll only be available in the weekly tournaments, so pick them up now. As for the pre-orders, they're split into the stuff all participating retailers are offering and the additional in-game content GameStop is bundling in.<br /><br />All participating pre-orders include the game's official soundtrack, a PS3 dynamic theme based on the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/playstationblog/8252729323/">box art</a>, and 'Winter Joel' and 'Winter Ellie' PSN avatars. That sounds perfect for a game <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/07/the-last-of-us-finds-a-friend-in-all-of-us-may-7-2013/">confirmed</a> for late spring - May 7, 2013, to be specific.<br /><br />Pre-order at GameStop and you'll also get multiplayer goodies on top of the soundtrack, theme, and avatars. Those goodies include bonus XP, a melee attack booster, customizable character items, bonus skins, and a bit of extra in-game cash to help you on your way. Now you can see the fifteen-minute slice of (desperately clinging to) life for yourself, above.<br /><br />Over fifteen minutes, you'll see some downtime movie talk, exploration of a run-down building, some stealth, and lots of fighting. Wells announced the news on <a href="https://twitter.com/PrettyLarceny/status/235059090294980609">Twitter</a> earlier today, though didn't say much more beyond that - it's unknown whether or not he'll have any hand in Naughty Dog's next game, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-last-of-us">The Last of Us</a></em>.<br /><br />Wells was one of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/08/key-irrational-staffers-exit-company-including-bioshock-infinit/">three high-profile vacancies</a> at Irrational Games last week, which was soon followed by one high-profile hire: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/09/epics-rod-fergusson-going-to-irrational-to-work-on-bioshock-inf/">Epic Games alumnus Rod Fergusson</a>. Well, aside from the usual balance fixes that come with a game patch, the 1.13 update for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/uncharted-3-drakes-deception">Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception</a></em> installs a pipeline for weekly DLC updates to the multiplayer side. The playlist is going back to a 5v5 format, this time giving players a combination of riot shields, uzis, and grenades to carry out to the battlefield. Kickback and boosters are disabled, too, so it sounds like your best strategy is to be vicious: Shoot everything until you get close enough to stab them in the back.<br /><br />With this update, Naughty Dog also fixed an issue with DLC maps not showing up properly in the rotation, and there's <a href="http://www.naughtydog.com/site/post/uncharted_3_the_lab_5_v_5_team_death_match_riot_shields_arm_micros_and_gren/">a full rundown of what you'll see when</a> on the company blog. The first look at Bill, who is portrayed via performance capture by William Earl Brown, shows him as a crotchety, tough old man with a safe house that Ellie and Joel break into, apparently setting off all kinds of booby traps along the way.<br /><br />The introductory cinematic cutscene suggests Joel and Bill have a history, and as is expected for the game, it's a relationship based mainly on four-letter words and raised voices. The scene sets Joel and Ellie up to scavenge around the town for parts so Bill can <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/take-the-scenic-route-through-this-the-last-of-us-trailer/">build a car</a> for the main duo's escape.<br /><br />We assume that earlier in his life, Bill helped <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/left-4-dead">another group</a> of lost souls survive a zombie apocalypse.
