What in the world is NBA Baller Beats, pray tell? Why it's, "a fun, high energy and first-of-its kind participative basketball video game launching this fall exclusively on Kinect for the Xbox 360," of course! Yes, you read that right: it's a Kinect game played with an actual basketball in your living room.

It looks like Majesco is going all out for this one, with a tracklist featuring the likes of "Kanye West, Run DMC, Gorillaz, Them Crooked Vultures, Common, Tiesto and more." No word is given on Majesco partnering with any insurance companies alongside the game's launch this fall, but we expect to hear more on that at E3.

Update: USA Today's exclusive on the game describes it as more of a rhythm/music game than a dribbling coach. "Players bounce the ball to the beat of the music; your visual cue is a line of basketballs that flows on a musical trail," it reads. You'll also need to perform specific moves along the way. "An icon prepares you for an upcoming basketball move you need to perform, also in time with the music. That may be a crossover from one hand to the other, a dribble between the legs, a pass fake or shot fake." Color us intrigued! We're still terrified for our living rooms, of course.
Continue reading NBA Baller Beats: Make Space to Jam in your living room

NBA Baller Beats: Make Space to Jam in your living room originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 25 Apr 2012 09:50:00 EST. I could never play in the NBA. Even if you forgive the fact that I'm significantly shorter than 7'2", and possess a jumpshot that's eerily similar to watching a pillowcase full of Jell-O get dropped from a roof in slow motion, there's no hope for me. Luckily, I can realize that dream through video games, and few titles allow me to do so with more simulated perfection than NBA 2K12.
And by "meet" we mean "get wicked dunked on by." NBA 2K12's "NBA's Greatest" mode is bringing history's greatest b-ballers out of retirement for one last virtual game, and judging by this latest trailer, they're going to be styling all over us.
Meet the 'NBA's Greatest' in this NBA 2K12 trailer originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 23 Aug 2011 04:30:00 EST. Six years ago, the NBA counted five major game makers -- including Sony, Midway and Atari -- in its non-exclusive circle of licensees. That number has since dwindled to two, as the league today re-upped its multi-year licensing agreements with its longstanding (and still standing) video game partners, Take-Two Interactive and Electronic Arts.

Unsurprisingly, through its 2K Sports label, Take-Two will continue to make use of its NBA license in its successful NBA 2K franchise. The most recent release, NBA 2K11, has now sold more than five million units since its October 2010 debut, according to the publisher. The next iteration, NBA 2K12, is expected to be announced at E3.

Assuming 2K12 is on track to be released this fall (lockout or game on), it would mark a second straight year that 2K Sports' simulation series entered the market with no direct competition (Madden style!). EA, the NBA's oldest video game partner, permanently benched NBA Elite 11 last November after the company determined, "It was just going to be a bad game." EA Sports' next basketball sim won't be released until Fall 2012, with a download-only NBA Jam sequel subbing in this October.

Additionally, Take-Two is expected to "explore and develop new NBA licensed gaming opportunities, including online on social media platforms," according to a press announcement.

Counting itself as "the No. 1 U.S. sports league on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube," the NBA, through its NBA Digital label, has already released NBA Legends (developed by Lionside) and NBA Dynasty (in partnership with Disney-owned Playdom) on Facebook this year.
EA Sports is working on a follow-up to last year's reboot of NBA Jam, but this one's going download-only. NBA Jam: On Fire Edition is set to take the court in October for both PS3 and Xbox Live (no Wii release announced) and will arrive via PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade, respectively. It's worth noting that last year's game was a full $50 retail release, but a stripped-down version was originally planned as a downloadable title free to those who purchased new copies of the ill-fated NBA Elite 11.

On Fire Edition will benefit from new opponent AI (adapted from the Fight Night titles), revamped visuals and a host of new online features including an online co-op "Road Trip" campaign mode and roster updates. The new AI is promising competition that "learns your tendencies and throws them back in your face."

Y'know, kind of like having the fact that you paid 50 bucks for the last game, when this one will probably run $15-20, thrown back in your face. Buried at the bottom of a press release for NBA Jam: On Fire Edition -- a downloadable title coming this fall to PSN and XBLA -- is news that the next "real" basketball game from EA Sports won't be here until fall 2012. Nothing makes for a better distraction than (NBA Jam: On) Fire!

"As planned, our next NBA simulation title is in development at our Tiburon Studio in Orlando," EA Sports president Peter Moore said in the announcement. "We have top talent on the game, and we're giving the new development team time to deliver a superior experience. We're making great strides and looking forward to launching a new game next year." That lesson about giving the team plenty of time was learned the hard way: through the near-release and scrapping of NBA Elite 11.

This means it'll be three full years between EA basketball sims, during which time 2K Sports will enjoy its status as the Harlem Globetrotters of the basketball video game market.
Continue reading Next EA basketball simulation game coming fall 2012

Next EA basketball simulation game coming fall 2012 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 17:03:00 EST. You know that little dude doing a slam dunk on your shoes? That's not like some kind of corporate logo or something -- that's MIchael Jordan. Oh, you knew that? Well, thanks for ruining our opening paragraph. We guess we'll just get right to it then.

Sources close to ESPN say the legend himself will grace the cover of NBA 2K11, marking the first time a retired player and team owner has appeared on the cover of an NBA 2K title. Jordan recently became majority owner of the Charlotte Bobcats.

Further tantalizing "Jumpman 23" fans is the prospect of an in-game Mike, which ESPN posits is a strong possibility. This has supposedly lead to 2K pursuing other players from the past in an attempt to recreate some of Jordan's highlights in the game. With E3 fast approaching, we're certain we'll have confirmation one way or the other soon enough. We'll keep you posted.
If you thought your excitement for NBA Jam couldn't get any higher after reading our preview, know that MTV Multiplayer has confirmed that classic ballers Larry Bird and Magic Johnson are in the game. Creative director Trey Smith said that the second-to-last team that players will face in the Classic Campaign mode -- the game's "worst-to-first ladder tournament," which pits players against a series of teams -- will be decided based on who wins the 2010 NBA championships. Then, the final match will feature the iconic duo.

There's no word on other possible unlockable characters, but, frankly, we're going to flip out if we don't get to play as Chow Chow or Bill Clinton. Don't get us wrong -- it's full of gameplay that puts us right back on the couch in 1994, trying to desperately remember the code so that we can play as our favorite US president.

That said, the announcer probably says "Kaboom!" four or five times. And yeah, somewhere in the middle there, we realized that NBA Jam just doesn't have that many catchphrases. But that's okay with us -- the gameplay looks fantastic! We'll have our impressions of the game up in a few weeks, but for now you can peep the trailer yourself just a few inches up.

Newest NBA Jam trailer brings plenty of extra heat originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 14 Mar 2010 21:00:00 EST. Great news, sports fans -- an EA Sports press release just brought some (anticipated) hoop-shaking news into our dreary Monday morning: NBA Jam is getting relaunched (or, rather, re-relaunched) later this year on the Wii by EA Canada. Details are slim, but the presser promises "new game modes, characters and gameplay depth," while simultaneously "[re-defining] the visuals for a sports game yet again."

Not explicitly mentioned is whether the series' original progenitor, Mark Turmell, will be collaborating on the game. Considering he's currently stationed at EA Tiburon in Orlando, it's not beyond the realm of possibilities -- and if he is contributing, we feel confident that the title will be in gooBOOOOM-SHAKA-LAKA! Woah, sorry. We got a little overexcited there.
NBA Jam to set the Wii on fire in 2010 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Jan 2010 10:15:00 EST. Are you upset by the fact that people who see your Xbox Live Avatar don't immediately know your favorite NBA team? Well, you can rectify that with the new Avatar gear available on Xbox Live, courtesy of NBA 2K10 and NBA Live 10. The subtle difference between each series on offer is that NBA2K10's set has numbers on 'em, whereas the NBA Live 10 jerseys only feature team names.
Posting on the official 2K forums, an admin has stated that the developer is aware of reported framerate issues encountered by several players in NBA 2K10. He's also put out a call to readers to describe any encounters with the slowdown, with the hopes that problems can be identified and resolved. The thread has grown to 25 pages at the time of writing this post.

If you've run into the problem yourself, get over to the relevant thread and recount that traumatic experience with as much detail as you can. Another year, another NBA game from Sony San Diego Studios. This year's basketball game will arrive on October 6 and will feature an expanded Conquest Mode. The PSP version of the game will also feature two new minigames: Open Lanes, a 10 frame bowling game; and Cherry Pickin', a puzzle based mini-game "with an NBA feel." In addition NBA 10 The Inside will feature all of the minigames from previous entries in the series.

Commentary has been expanded with the addition of NBA star Kenny Smith to join Ian Eagle. The PSP version will also feature two player multiplayer through Ad-Hoc -- sorry, no Infrastructure this time around. Check out the first screens below:

NBA 10 The Inside coming October 6 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 29 Jul 2009 22:00:00 EST. It seems our tipster was on the level -- 2K Sports is, in fact, releasing an early NBA 2K10 character creation feature and stat-building minigames as an XBLA and PSN download titled NBA 2K10 Draft Combine, due out this September for 400 ($5). 2K Games is opening up a very dangerous door, apparently, as a source close to Joystiq has passed along info on the company's new game for PSN and XBLA, called NBA 2K10: Draft Combine. Set to release alongside NBA 2K10, the spinoff game will allow players to take potential draftees through a rigorous training routine, boosting their stats before being drafted into the retail game.

We call it a "dangerous door," because, frankly, it is. Many criticize sports titles for offering little variety or improvements in each yearly iteration, and Draft Combine sounds like it could be a way to milk sports fans for even more dough. Of course, not knowing further details about the rumored game, this is just speculation, and should be taken as such. Still, if it turns out as our worst fears predict (that Draft Combine is a minigame-like feature split from NBA 2K10 and sold separately), then we're sure there are bound to be some upset gamers out there. Oh, and if you're a person in the know, then feel free to hit up our tips box with more details. Anonymity assured!

Did you know that at 1.3 billion people, the mainland Chinese population encompasses around 1/6th of the world's population? It's true! This might help to explain why Take-Two Interactive announced today not just the launch of NBA 2K Online -- an online basketball game for the Asian market -- but also the creation of Take-Two Asia, a new satellite office for the BioShock publisher.

The game is being co-developed by Take-Two and Chinese game company Tencent Holdings Limited for distribution in China and "other key markets" (notably Taiwan, South Korea and Southeast Asia). Information on the game's pricing structure or what it looks like or, well, anything really is rather scant, though we do know that it will include "all of the NBA teams, as well as current and retired NBA players." Will the game be free-to-play with microtransactions? Will it ever be offered on this side of the Pacific? Will we be able to showboat our jersey in a raucous celebration of happiness a la Kobe Bryant when we dunk on fools? We just don't know.
Take-Two announces push into Asia with NBA 2K Online originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 23 Jun 2009 15:30:00 EST. Apparently, all it takes to manage an NBA roster these days is a working knowledge of a game console and a copy of NBA Live 09. (LA Times seems to think you'd do just fine with the '08 edition, too, but it's simply not in that version's "DNA.") You don't even need to know how to play -- just sit back and let the game run its own simulations, as Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey recently admitted. While it sounds like the sort of desperation measure fit for a Clippers GM, reportedly, roughly half of NBA teams use EA's NBA Live to evaluate players around the league. "Say if you're thinking about acquiring Ron Artest," explained Morey, "On the game, you can see how adding Artest can change the dynamic of your team. You can program it to run offensive sets with Artest and any combination of your players."

On the flip side, "you can't simulate a player being out too late the night before or his body language on the bench or how he interacts with teammates" conceded Morey; or his potential to attend practice in a bathrobe or put out an embarrassingly clichéd hip-hop record. (All great ideas for the next installment of NBA Live, by the way.)

[Thanks, Wonderflex]
NBA teams get 'In the Game' to scope talent originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 03 Dec 2008 20:30:00 EST. Turns out there are greater hurdles to face than having to stare down a charging Yao Ming -- like manifesting a CD key out of thin air. That's just the challenge faced by those who purchased NBA 2K9 for PC. According to a thread at the 2K forums, many who purchased the title and were prompted for an authentication code were out of luck, as none appeared anywhere in or on the packaging.

In a statement to Shacknews, Valve said that Steam will fix the issue and allow installation without the need for the key, provided the CD is in the drive.
NBA 2K9 ships without CD keys, fix available via Steam originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 Oct 2008 10:00:00 EST. Did anyone else think that the Fracture demo wasn't as abysmal as you were expecting? Sure, it was the epitome of mediocre third-person action with a gimmick attached, but at times it was almost fun. Well the full game is out this week in both the US and Europe and, unless you're a European lego fan with vigilante tendencies, that's pretty much it. Oh, except for basketball. Lots of basketball. Here's the full release list:

US Games

Release dates are constantly subject to change, so be sure to check with your local retailer before making any sudden moves. Your PS3 will play games from any region, so go ahead and import anything you see above. Do be aware that DLC is locked to specific regions, though, so European games will require DLC from the Euro PSN Store. You may also be interested to know that NBA 09: The Inside is the only NBA game to support trophies.
Worldwide PS3 releases for the week of October 5th originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 05 Oct 2008 10:00:00 EST. Glenn from the PS Nation podcast, the official podcast of PS Fanboy, took some time to play NBA 09: The Inside for PSP. Here's his impressions of the upcoming game.

I'll be the first to admit I really haven't paid attention to the NBA for a couple of years. I still root for my Milwaukee Bucks, and even still use them in video games, but I rarely watch them play any more. Lately, if I'm playing a basketball game, it sits firmly in the "arcadey" category. I even own a full-sized NBA Maximum Hangtime arcade cabinet.

When I opened the small package that I received from Sony, and realized that this was the first pre-release game that they sent to us here at the PS Nation Podcast, I was shocked and excited. I may not spend an insane amount of time on Basketball games like I do for other titles, but I do play them. There's a lot to cover here, but I'll tell you this--what I've seen and played so far is surprisingly good!

Continue reading Preview: NBA 09 The Inside

Preview: NBA 09 The Inside originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Sep 2008 09:55:00 EST.
Quite possibly the biggest feature for this year's NBA game from SCEA's San Diego Studios is the addition of The Life, a story a mode which chronicles the player's journey from the streets to the NBA. This first trailer highlighting the single player campaign looks pretty epic -- will this be able to differentiate itself from the other NBA games coming out this year?

Get a look at NBA 09: The Inside's story originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 04 Sep 2008 09:08:00 EST. Regardless of your enthusiasm for the sport, it's undeniable that Sony San Diego's first-party sports games on PS3 look incredible. MLB 08 The Show really took the series to the new generation and the upcoming NBA 09 The Inside looks to do the same. This time, The Inside goes beyond just standard ball games -- take a look at these new screenshots to see the other aspects of the game's most exciting mode, "The Life."

Get a look inside NBA 09's 'The Life' originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 16 Aug 2008 18:00:00 EST.

Sony is looking to repeat the success it found with MLB 08 The Show with NBA 09 The Inside. The first-party basketball game is being handled by SCEA San Diego Studios -- the same team that took care of the well-received MLB 08. Sony revealed new screens and talk new details about this upcoming basketball game, scheduled for release on PS3 on October 7th.

1080p and 60fps are being promised yet again for this realistic-looking sports game. The Inside adds a new mode for the PS3, "The Life," which offers players the ability to see life inside the NBA through a story-based campaign. Franchise Mode is expanded upon greatly, with a new focus on performance and player morale. Stats will be tracked on a variety of levels, such as salary, playing time, trades, team performance

Other features include the return of NBA Replay, which allows players to relive great basketball performances from the '07-'08 season, and upcoming downloadable NBA games from the '08-'09 season. In addition to a boost in AI, online functionality will be expanded upon. Expect to easily show off customizable characters and improved leaderboards.

The graphics have, as expected, been improved, and Havok physics has been implemented as well. Two min-games will round out this incredibly fully-featured basketball package. Check out the first screens:

Wow, what an incredible night for these lucky fans at the NBA All Star Skills Challenge. Everyone from section 331 of the stadium was treated to a free 40GB PS3 and a copy of NBA 08. That must be one of the most feel-good things we've seen in quite some time. Congrats to them.

But look closer at the picture. Notice the section next to them? (We'll call them section 332.) Notice the sad expressions they carry? It must feel horrible to think: "if only I sat a few seats down ... We're pretty sure this demo will end up in tomorrow's PLAYSTATION Store update. But why wait to get a free downloadable demo?

1. Download the demo zip file. Update: Link URL corrected.
2. Extract the contents of the zip file.
3. Connect your PSP to your computer using a USB cable.
4. Go to the PSP/GAME folder.
5. Copy UCUS98699 folder into the GAME directory. Make sure there are no sub-directories in this folder.

Who says mo-cap is the technical capturing of data to create realistic, fluid motion in gaming that's devoid of soul? Sports writer Bill "The Sports Guy" Simmons did a piece for ESPN's new show, E:60, wherein he heads to EA Sports studios to undergo the motion capture process for NBA Live 08. He even schools Boston Celtics all-star Paul "The Truth" Pierce in the process -- sorta.

While you might have seen mo-cap videos before, Simmons speaks candidly about the technology, observing that sweat makes the suit moist. TMI there, Bill. T-M-I.

PJ Snavely's recent PlayStation blog post echoes the sentiments of many PSP owners. "Personally, I find it very frustrating when developers bring an identical version of a sports game to the PSP, so we've gone out of our way to ensure that NBA '08 is significantly different than its PS2/PS3 brethren."

To make sure that NBA '08 felt fresh on PSP, the developers added a number of mini-games. The one the team seems most proud of appears to be Conquest mode which is described as "Basketball meets Risk." As described in the blog entry, "In Conquest, you pick an NBA team and then try to "capture" other NBA cities by playing them head-to-head. If you win, you take over that city and all of its players. Should you lose, the defending city has the option to steal one of your players."

Just like in real life.

Continue reading Ensuring NBA 08 is different on PSP than PS3/PS2

Ensuring NBA 08 is different on PSP than PS3/PS2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 28 Sep 2007 09:30:00 EST.
Sony Computer Entertainment's upcoming NBA 08 looks quite special on PSP. Why? Because the development team is adding a whole slew of mini-games and modes exclusively for the portable version. The carnival games, featured above, are easily the most talked about. These games range from the obvious, like HORSE, but move to the more surreal, such as Pinball. Even if you don't like the idea of these bonuses, you have to give the team some props for deciding to add modes exclusively for the handheld version.

Continue reading PSP modes of NBA 08 captured on video

PSP modes of NBA 08 captured on video originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 16 Sep 2007 22:00:00 EST. "Bullshot" is a term used for a screenshot that's been altered through <strike>the Devil's workshop</strike> Photoshop to be more than it is. A large majority of screenshots are altered before they go out for public consumption. Things will be a little crisper, glossier and/or just plain altered to make the game look better than it is. Although the latest batch of NBA Live '08 screens on Gamespot all look altered, the one above is a standout of the bunch. It's the one you can clearly point to and say, "Beyond the things I think are altered, that's definitely been Photoshopped." Can you see it? Click the image to enlarge if you need it -- answer is after the break.
Continue reading EA shows clearest 'bullshot' in a long time

EA shows clearest 'bullshot' in a long time originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 15 Aug 2007 10:03:00 EST. The minigame-infused PSP edition of NBA '08 is sporting some impressive features for a PSP basketball game. Sony has released a few new images of the game in action, as seen in our gallery below. With expanded multiplayer features, downloadable content and "expanded audio commentary," we have to say that we're expecting big things out of the game. The Suns' Stoudemire, the cover athlete for NBA '06, will return as the cover athlete for this year's iteration.

NBA '08 gets cover athlete, new screens originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Aug 2007 17:00:00 EST. PSP continues to get its annual rush of sports games. NBA 08 brings crazy minigames to the PSP version, and some really sharp graphics. Looking at these new screenshots, we wouldn't be surprised to mistake this for a full PS2 version.
A game for each territory this week. Aren't we lucky. Ready to get started on some hardcore 1080p pirating? My brain has a habit of glossing over any mention of franchise-based games, so I'll probably be giving this one a miss. Let me know if I should reconsider.

Don't forget that the PS3 is region free, so feel free to choose any of the above list as your next purchase. Maybe you're a huge Pirates of the Caribbean fan and fancy playing a copy from each territory? It could happen, I suppose. And yes, I will be reminding you that the PS3 can read discs from any country every week. It's so easy to forget.

Release dates are subject to change, as always.
Worldwide PS3 releases for week of May 22nd originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 20 May 2007 20:30:00 EST. It's great to have the behemoth on our side, of course, but there seems to be this mystique in the air, one that enforces a rule: if a multi-platform game is coming to the Wii, it needs to use waggle.

Take, for instance, the upcoming version of NBA Live '08, featuring one hobbled Agent Zero (Gilbert Arenas) on the cover. Do we really want to have to dribble the ball using the Wiimote? Even something like passing could be wildly inaccurate if two players are in the same direction; the game might end up suffering as a result.

Do you feel as though multiplatform games tend to benefit from additional Wii controls, or suffer? What are some notable examples?
Wii Warm Up: EA waggle originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 01 May 2007 09:00:00 EST. Yes, that's only two days after the release of the Def Jam: Icon demo. Now, you'll have two games to try out this weekend, pick a favorite (or favorites if you like both), and be able to preorder by Monday. Now that's some fine multitasking that wouldn't be possible without the help of the XBLM. Long live video game demos.

[Thanks, dpcough]
NBA Street: Homecourt demo dated originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 30 Jan 2007 23:45:00 EST.
