Before the alteration, Zynga was required to use Facebook's monetization platform, and Facebook couldn't create its own titles to compete with Zynga's. The latest agreement undoes both stipulations and opens up both sides for more independence.

At this time, neither side has announced that it wants to change the way things work, so Zynga will likely still use Facebook's payments system, and Facebook hasn't announced plans to make any official games. A spokesperson for Facebook reiterated that "we will continue to work with Zynga, just as we do with developers of all sizes." It's not a break-up, in other words, but they are free to see other people.
Facebook and Zynga agree to new terms, create potential for official Facebook games originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 Nov 2012 23:59:00 EST. Starting today, players will be able to go to OnLive's website, and load up the streaming service without a standalone app. OnLive says the browser service is also very customizable by any publishers or content providers, allowing for free streaming trials of any games on the service, with options to send customers off to buy or preorder the games once they're done playing. The service is very similar to competitor Gaikai, and should lower the barrier of entry for customers unwilling to download a separate app: OnLive says it will even work in popular mobile browsers, on smartphones and tablets.

OnLive has also introduced a new feature called MultiView, which allows players to watch multiple views of other players' gameplay while playing their own games, as seen above. Because OnLive's streaming technology just sends video and audio, players can watch up to three other screens while their own game is running, without any more speed hits on the local CPU. MultiView is currently in beta, and should see a full release later on this summer.
OnLive coming to browsers, smart TVs with more viewing capabilities originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 Jun 2012 12:15:00 EST. 2K Games announced this week that the Detroit Tigers hurler Justin Verlander will grace the cover of MLB 2K12, due out when the next baseball season begins in March of next year. Verlander was named Player of the Year and American League Outstanding Pitcher at the recent Players' Choice Awards, and it's likely that he'll pick up the Cy Young Award for 2011 as well, the first time he'll earn that honor.

You can see Verlander's virtual arm (and virtual chewing animation) in the quick trailer above. Sure, it's the arm that strikes out batters, but you can't get Detroit to the AL championship without a groovy chew like that one.
MLB 2K12 names Tigers' Justin Verlander as cover Athlete originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 06 Nov 2011 20:30:00 EST. Want to hear all about how at the end of Portal 2 you discover it's all a dream? Or how about that part where GLaDOS becomes a real-life human? If totally fake Portal 2 spoilers are your idea of a good time, well friend ... you've come to the right place. Oh, some of what we say about Portal 2 will be totally real, like how great the co-op missions are and how very, very broke we'll all be if Valve can figure out how to sell us more of them.

Maybe you haven't been able to play Portal 2 at all and are relying on the Joystiq Podcast to provide you with vicarious thrills. Busy week at the office? A newborn keeping you up at night? A genetic inability to grok the use of portals? We're here to help. Listen below or, if you're not near a fancy computer, try the Ustream app on your iPhone, Windows Phone 7, or Android phone.
Continue reading Joystiq Podcast recording live here at 3:30PM ET

Joystiq Podcast recording live here at 3:30PM ET originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 21 Apr 2011 15:00:00 EST. We're sorry.

What else do you want us to say? It's not like we didn't want to podcast your faces off last week; we couldn't! Both Justin and I, ravaged by illness, couldn't summon the vocal fortitude to do what needed to be done. Even this week, we hang on for dear life. Will we survive another 90 minutes of thrilling video game commentary? Who can say, listener ...

If you're the rubber-necking type, listen live after the break. Maybe, if you're lucky, you'll hear someone dying live! (We're not sure what it sounds like either.) If you're not at home and have instead ventured into the germ-filled region we call "outside" then we implore you to listen with the Ustream app on your iPhone, Windows Phone 7, or Android phone. Also, we implore you to get home immediately. Germs!
Continue reading Joystiq Podcast recording live here at 3:30PM ET

Joystiq Podcast recording live here at 3:30PM ET originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 14 Apr 2011 15:10:00 EST. Does glasses-free 3D video sound like a revolution to you? Then, my good man (and/or woman) you haven't experienced glasses-free 3D audio. Come, just past the break, and take a trip for your senses with the Joystiq Podcast Live (Now in 3D!). Pop in some headphones and use your ability to gauge distance to ... walk down the street!

Maybe you could have a friend throw a baseball at you, or visit an aquarium with a giant shark who could jump right at you. All in 3D and all while listening to the Joystiq Podcast. Is it magic? No, just magical.

But how will you walk down the street if you're glued to the embedded Flash player after the break? That's easy! Download the Ustream app on your iPhone, Windows Phone 7, or Android phone and get a move on.
Continue reading Joystiq Podcast recording live here at 3:00PM ET

Joystiq Podcast recording live here at 3:00PM ET originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 24 Mar 2011 14:20:00 EST. Is this really happening? Has the entire Joystiq Podcast survived a combined one million miles of air travel (and thankfully rare face-to-face encounters) only to be reunited with their cluttered home offices? Forget about boring live, meat-based podcasts and join us at 3:30 for a live, binary-based podcast!
If you had to regrettably venture out of your domicile to get food (why else do people leave?) then we'll remind you that all is not lost! You can tell us. How much did you bet that we wouldn't be back this week for another live podcast? A dollar? One hundred dollars? Whatever it was, you lose! It's a fresh week and, like all weeks that are fresh, this one comes chocked full of the vitamins and minerals we know as "video game news." Join Justin, Chris, and special guest Chris Plante for a live podcast, starting at 1PM ET.

Oh, the terms of your bet stipulated that the entire original cast would be here this week for a live podcast? Alright, so you stand to make a little green, but it's only fair if we get a percentage. How else can we afford to remind people to download the Ustream app on their iPhone, Windows Phone 7, or Android phone if they can't follow along below?
Continue reading Joystiq Podcast recording live here at 1:00PM ET

Joystiq Podcast recording live here at 1:00PM ET originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 24 Feb 2011 12:10:00 EST. While that thought frightens your (usually) fearless pals at Joystiq too, we know of only one way to get our minds away from the inevitable, unyielding march of time: talking about video games!

So join us back here at 3pm ET where we'll be doing our best to ignore our shared fate with discussion of the first PlayStation-certified phone, the Xperia Play, the new augmented reality Spyro's Adventure game, and that delicious Dead Island trailer. If going for a walk distracts you from dark thoughts of the abyss, then download the Ustream app on your iPhone, Windows Phone 7, or Android phone and take us with you. No, on your walk, not into the vacuum of oblivion! British mag NGamer put together a clever 2010 "year in review" of mainstream news using WarioWare DIY. Some of the referenced incidents may be obvious internationally, while others are quite UK specific, so we made a list of the minigames and what they represent.
The 3.02-inch bottom screen has a 320x240 pixel resolution, a small bump over the DS's 256x192 resolution. The larger (3.53-inch) top screen has an 800x240 resolution, though it's really two 400x240 images superimposed over one another for the 3D effect.

The system supports WPA and WPA2 encryption for its wireless connection, though, like the DSi, it's likely that these protocols will be supported only by new games designed to do so, and not for legacy DS games. As for the physical details, Nintendo notes that the design is not final, so things like battery life and the final appearance are yet to be determined. We were told by Nintendo reps that the colors for the systems were also not final, so don't be heartbroken if you can't get that metallic blue color.
Posted just after the jump is one of the most hard-hitting news reports on the dangers of online gaming we've seen in years. Oh, sorry -- did we say "hard-hitting?" We meant "sensationalized, irrational, unresearched, and absolutely hilarious." We get those two phrases mixed up with surprising frequency.

If we were only allowed to give you one piece of advice in our lifetime, it would be that you should watch the video posted after the jump. If we could give you two pieces of advice, they would be to watch the video, and never, ever let a reporter into your house. For any reason. Ever. Ever.
Microsoft has revealed new details about its Fall 2009 Xbox 360 Dashboard Update -- yes, the same update set to bring Twitter, Last.fm and Facebook support. New to the list of update features is a dedicated Xbox Live storefront for music games DLC and a specific area of Inside Xbox called "News and More."

The Music Games Store will take a big step toward dealing with the clutter on Xbox Live, offering a one-stop shop for all Rock Band, Guitar Hero and Lips DLC. Aside from the convenience of a single destination for all music game DLC purchases, shoppers will also be able to preview each track from right there in the Dashboard.

As for the News and More section of Inside Xbox, it's described as "a regularly-updated stream of content from MSNBC.com, MSN Autos, The New Yorker and Dilbert." We're totally expecting some Akira-like monstrosity that is equal parts balloon boy, coffee station chit-chat and political cartoons we don't understand; though we're sure in reality the feature will be less scary and far less life-threatening.
Xbox 360 update to add Music Games Store, news section originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 19 Oct 2009 11:40:00 EST. Update: We spoke with Paweł Dembowski at Polygamia, who helped shed some more light on the matter. The original report stated the two companies would flip-flop shares, when in reality it's more of a merger. "The major inaccuracy in the early report was that the owners of CD Projekt will become the majority shareholders of Optimus - this is not the case - they will own a half of shares, the other half being owned by the current owners of Optimus," Dembowski said. "So it's more of a merger on equal terms than a takeover on either side." Well, we're glad that mess is sorted out! You can find the original post below.

Original post: The developers behind The Witcher and its upcoming sequel are looking to take their company public on the Warsaw Stock Market, Polish site Polygamia reports. It's a bit of an awkward deal, as defunct PC company Optimus S.A. will purchase CD Projekt, though the majority of Optimus S.A.'s shares will be owned by CD Projekt's CEOs -- effectively swapping shares in each other's companies.

GI.biz got in touch with Karol Zajaczkowski, marketing director at CDP Red (the studio behind The Witcher, owned by CD Projekt Investment, the company that owns CD Projekt, GoG.com, etc.) and reports the move is in part to help fuel future development, obviously something the company needs to do if it wants to finish the already impressive looking The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. It's awfully hard to type when you've been chortling for four hours straight -- still, this video is too beautiful and perfect for us not to share with you. Here's the rundown: A reporter at an Argentinian news station was working on exposing the teen drinking epidemic when he stumbled across a popular beverage with startling ingredients. Said ingredients include kerosene, artificial sweeteners, rum, acetone, red dye no. 2 -- sound familiar yet? Played any Monkey Island games recently?

Yes, a major Argentinian news station recently shed some light on the disturbing trend of imbibing Grog -- in fact, the emoticon-unsavvy reporter actually calls it "Grog XD." The video of this hard-hitting news, spliced with footage from Secret of Monkey Island (and subtitles!) is posted after the jump. We attach a 100 percent guarantee to your viewing of the video -- it will light up your life.
Continue reading Argentinian reporter warns of the dangers of Monkey Island 'Grog'

Argentinian reporter warns of the dangers of Monkey Island 'Grog' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 31 Aug 2009 19:30:00 EST. It's PTR time in the World of Warcraft, which means we're all checking out the next content patch before any of the changes go live (or are actually finalized). So now's the time for crazy stuff, whether it be testing out brand new bosses, seeing Warriors get a chance to break open Pally shields, or any of the other patch 3.1 lunacy. WoW Insider's got up-to-the-minute news about all of it.
The Fifth Estate, a Canadian investigative reporting program that's been on the air for over three decades, recently ran a piece looking into the untimely death of gaming enthusiast Brandon Crisp, who ran away from his Ontario home last October after his parents took away his Xbox 360, and was found dead three weeks later due to injuries sustained from falling out of a tree. Within the first few minutes of the short documentary, titled "Top Gun," The Fifth Estate's angle on the piece becomes clear: Some entity or cultural force is to blame for Crisp's death, and it's going to find out what it is.

It settles at first on Crisp's infatuation with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which is strengthened by his active participation on the MLG-owned clan-ranking site GameBattles.com. From there, it delves into the foul underworld of competitive gaming, showing how attaching cash rewards to intense, lengthy sessions with mature video games is creating an irresistibly attractive lifestyle for those who fall beneath such titles' age restrictions. All the while, it depicts the unimaginable violence present in said games, and explain the detrimental effects it has on the lives of otherwise normal youths.

We lay this outline of the 40-minute documentary before you so that you don't actually have to watch it, as the sensationalism it contains and factual liberties it takes will likely raise the gaming community's collective hackles to unprecedented levels.
Continue reading Sensationalized 'Top Gun' report blames pro gaming for death of Brandon Crisp

Sensationalized 'Top Gun' report blames pro gaming for death of Brandon Crisp originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 08 Mar 2009 16:45:00 EST. It appears that someone at Sony proper forgot to drink their morning coffee and accidentally threw the wrong switch, resulting in a handful of lucky insomniacs getting an early glimpse at the PS3's oft-delayed news-and-weather-service, Life with PlayStation. Sony's answer to the Wii's weather and news channels, which utilizes Google data to display real-time data, was originally expected to drop in July before being delayed on a pair of occasions, most recently earlier this month.

According to Sony, the application was posted for public download during testing "temporarily, by mistake," allowing pictures like the one above to be captured and posted online. As for when the app will get a proper release, Sony is only saying that an announcement will be made "shortly." For now, it seems that we'll have to go about getting our news and weather info the old fashioned way: by rolling our chairs over to the computer.
Some lived a Life with PlayStation ... briefly originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 17 Sep 2008 14:00:00 EST. Remember when Sony said its news-and-weather-service, Life with PlayStation, would be coming in August (after initially saying it would be coming in July)? Well, calendar-equipped readers may have noticed that August has come and gone and the service is still not available. Not to fret, though, as a post on the official PlayStation blog promises that the team is just "pushing some paperwork" on the service and asks that anticipatory fans (both of you) should "hold tight just a bit longer."

The post also reveals that the free service will integrate with Folding@Home, so users can help Stanford researchers as they're scanning the headlines. Let's see CNN.com do that!
Sony promises Life with PlayStation still 'on its way' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 01 Sep 2008 16:00:00 EST. We all know that just one memory stick isn't enough for our PSP gaming and multimedia needs. That's exactly why a group called Team Xecuter came up with this UMEMD carrying case that can hold up to four memory stick pro duos.

The case is shaped like a UMD. The reason for this is that it will save pocket space by fitting right inside the PSP where the usual UMD game would go. Only drawback is that the case is only good for PSP-1000s. Also, it is obviously not as useful if you're planning to play a UMD-based game. It is, however, great for playing PSN downloaded games saved on the memory stick, storing that humongous music library of yours, and/or keeping your entire photo album with you on the go.

So far, no price has been set. Team Xecuter plans on selling these little babies in two weeks time.

[Via DCEmu Forums]
Carry four extra memory sticks with UMEMD originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 27 Mar 2008 19:30:00 EST. The section covers reviews, previews, news and features, created by known writers in the industry. This new section represents a clear progression and departure from our GameTap expectations.

The Read section is an obvious progression because we know that GameTap is looking to become an expansive television network-style site. With their subscription service, free service, video programming, and original gaming content coming along quite nicely, it only makes sense for them to start carrying news, previews and reviews.

The departure from our expectations is that we didn't imagine them bringing in veteran "name" writers like Curt Feldman, former news director at CNET Entertainment (Gamespot), and former editors from the deceased Official PlayStation Magazine (OPM). Furthermore, the writing on the site isn't even GameTap related, it's just normal gaming content that you'd find on a Gamespot or IGN (which GameTap also got writers from). We have no idea how many of these writers are full-time, but if many of them are, it seems GameTap is looking to become a full-blown gaming site and not just a virtual console for your PC and Mac.

[Via GameSetWatch]
GameTap digs for readers with veteran writer line-up originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 12 Aug 2007 09:20:00 EST. What had you hoped for that you haven't heard about? Disaster: Day of Crisis is among the first things that come to mind for us, but we want to hear from you. Any announcements or games you were hoping for that just seem to be MIA? Just remember, campers, not to fret ... just because something hasn't been discussed doesn't mean it's not coming. It just probably means it's not priority, at least for right now. You can still keep your fingers crossed. We won't tell.
Wii Warm Up: What haven't you heard? originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Jul 2007 09:00:00 EST. The Christian Science Monitor along with the National Wildlife Federation reports that videogames are one of the reasons (along with cell phones, TV, and gas prices) national parks in North America have seen a sharp decline in attendance over the last few years. More kids are becoming couch potatoes and developing a "nature deficit disorder", and parks are suffering as a result. The NWF is launching programs around the country to fight the indooredness of these sun-deprived folk whose only interaction with trees is in World of Warcraft.

We love gaming, but we also love nature. While you can't do both at the same time (waterfall hikes with gaming gear in tow can get messy), we can't help but feel there's a deeper reason behind the decline. Maybe Nature just needs a better marketing team to jazz things up, make it more exciting? It's time for Nature 2.0.

[Via Gaming Today]
Games blamed for decline in national park attendance originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Jun 2007 15:25:00 EST. Adam Mapleson was on his way home from work less than two weeks ago when he saw two men struggling with a security guard. When he stepped in to help, he was shot in the chest. Doctors listed him as "serious but stable" when we last reported on the situation, and some gaming forums compiled Get Well Soon cards in response. Now that Adam is all patched up and back in the wild, he can sit down for some well-deserved gaming time.
Gamer hero released from hospital originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 Jun 2007 09:10:00 EST.
