There is nothing we don't love about the latest trailer for NHL 12. See, while other trailers for annually iterated sports titles focus on how their new mechanics allow you greater control over the ball/racket/club, NHL 12 is more single-minded: you can now hurt dudes in new, more visceral ways.
NHL 12 trailer introduces new forms of ice-tackling originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 Jul 2011 21:00:00 EST. Listen here, Entertainment Software Ratings Board, if you're going to create a public service announcement for parents of young gamers starring Chicago Blackhawks players Patrick Sharp and Brian Campbell, you really can't use puns so halfheartedly. This commercial might be a noble attempt, but there are a lot of untapped hockey references you guys left hanging, like:

"If you don't do a box check, you could find yourself in a stick-y situation."

"Don't skate around your responsibilities as a parent, or you might end up in the penalty box."

"Don't puck around with ratings, or else your kid might play an age-inappropriate shoot-er."

"The icing on the cake? Something about Zambonis."

NHL fans will want to check the PlayStation Store right now. Sony and the NHL have just announced an exclusive partnership that enables PS3 owners to watch live hockey games through the NHL GameCenter Live app on the PlayStation Network. The app, which will exist under the Video section of the XMB, will be available for $10 or for free to PlayStation Plus members.

The interface of the app should be familiar to anyone that's tried MLB.tv, released earlier this year on PS3. With the app installed, PS3 owners will be able to access features like post-game highlights, team schedules, standings, player stats and profiles, and the full NHL scoreboard. Fans that subscribe to the GameCenter Live service ($169 annually) will get additional features, most notably the ability to stream live out-of-market games and "select" playoff broadcasts. In addition to the live streams, subscribers will get access to full-length and condensed replays of games 48 hours after they air (no blackouts). Included with membership is access to the NHL Vault, which gives you instant access to full replays of classic NHL games, going as far back as the 1960s.

NHL's Senior Director of Digital Business Development Alexandre G. Simon told us that the decision to partner with Sony exclusively was an easy one, after a successful experience selling content on the PlayStation Network's video service. According to Simon, the GameCenter app is a huge opportunity for the league to expand its reach to gamers who may be familiar with the NHL games, but haven't had the ability to regularly follow live games. With no ISP restrictions, and with "about half" of fans following out-of-market teams, the GameCenter app might just lure in some new followers -- especially for those who don't subscribe or have access to the Versus cable channel, where the NHL currently resides.
This new game has two distinguishing features: first, it is controlled with a scaled-down hockey stick peripheral, into which the Wiimote and Nunchuk are placed; second, it features the likeness of Wayne Gretzky, the retired NHL star so famous that even non-Canadians have heard of him.

"The stick peripheral will detect slap shots, wrist shots, body checks (done with a cross-check motion) and poke checks," the article explains, "with the Wiimote's trigger used as a modifier to perform passes, dekes and other moves." Though the game will ship with the hockey stick, it can also be played with a bare Wiimote and Nunchuk or Wiimote alone.

NHL Slapshot will be officially announced by EA on Monday, according to Canoe. However, the blog already spilled pretty much all the details, including the September 7 release date.

EA's 'NHL Slapshot' for Wii includes hockey stick peripheral, grinning Gretzky originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 30 May 2010 11:30:00 EST. A recent EA Sports press release has announced that the developer's upcoming hockey title, NHL 11, will be the first game to feature the teams and players of all three divisions in the Canadian Hockey League. The CHL is a "development" league, featuring players between the ages of 16 and 20, many of which go on to play for major teams in the NHL. We might go so far as to call it NHL Jr., if we didn't think every one of its players could beat us within an inch of our lives with little to no effort.

The two parties penned a four-year agreement to include CHL teams in the NHL game franchise, meaning we can expect to see minor league players in EA Sports' hockey franchise until NHL 14. We might even see a few CHL players move on to the big leagues between games. Won't that be nice?
EA and Canadian Hockey League ink 4-year partnership originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 22 May 2010 17:30:00 EST. Vancouver Canucks forward Ryan Kesler sounds genuinely excited about the opportunity, telling The Canadian Press that the only way he thought he'd ever end up on a game cover was "if I put my own picture on there."

"It's a dream come true for me," Kesler, ever the good spokesplayer, said. "I grew up playing, and to be on the cover of 2K is unbelievable."

Kesler confirmed that he got in his motion capture time for the game last year with 2K10 cover athlete Alexander Ovechkin. "I'm not a flashy scorer like Ovechkin, by any means, but I think I'm exciting in my own right," Kesler observed, suggesting that his Olympic performance was what attracted publisher Take-Two to his game ... face.

Hopefully, for Kesler's sake, there's no equivalent "Madden Curse" for NHL games. Hockey players are already doomed to lose all their teeth anyway. NHL 2K11 will be out this fall.
Ryan Kesler is the NHL 2K11 cover athlete originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 09 Mar 2010 11:31:00 EST. During the recent Take-Two fiscal earnings report, we noticed something a bit off. See, back in December when we got our last update from the company, NHL 2K11 was missing entirely from the report. This suggested that there wouldn't be another game in the series.

Well, today Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick revealed that another iteration in the series is in the works -- and it's exclusively for the Wii. "As far as NHL, we're taking a year off on PS3 and Xbox 360 to refine, redesign and re-think," Zelnick remarked during the earnings report. So while Canadians* will have fewer options when it comes to platform, knowing the series hasn't been retired is a good thing, right?

Update: We reached out to Take-Two for a more comprehensive explanation of the choice to ditch PS3 and Xbox 360 this year. Here's what the spoksperson said: "We have decided to reevaluate our NHL strategy and will only be releasing NHL 2K11 for the Wii in fiscal year 2010. We want to become a stronger competitor in this category and taking a year off on PS3 and Xbox 360, while focusing on making the best possible game for Wii, should allow us to accomplish that goal."

*Come on, we all know Canadians are the only ones playing these games
NHL 2K11 skips Xbox 360 and PS3, only coming to Wii [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 03 Mar 2010 17:30:00 EST. EA's 3-on-3 NHL Arcade, a smaller and more focused downloadable hockey title, seems to have been a successful experiment for the publisher. In a recent investor call, EA's Peter Moore confirmed that a similar title, this time with the Madden franchise as basis, is currently in development. Though little other information was divulged, we're told to expect title sometime "this holiday."
EA creating bite-sized Madden arcade title (think '3-on-3 NHL Arcade') originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 04 Aug 2009 17:45:00 EST. Based on info gleaned from Major Nelson's weekly Top Ten lists (sans data from the week ending February 2), GamerBytes has compiled a list of the top selling Xbox Live Arcade titles in February.

Topping the charts is the EA Sports Freestyle-branded arcade game, 3-on-3 NHL Arcade with strong showings from the pricey R-Type Dimensions and Braid (following an end of the month Deal of the Week sale). Most surprisingly was the interest in Minesweeper Flags, which hovered within the top ten for two weeks in a row -- even though every Windows PC ships with a version of the game!

Not faring as well last month were Death Tank (the Sega Saturn Duke Nukem 3D mini-game remake of Death Tank Zwei, priced at 1200) and Exit 2, which both failed to capture much attention upon release. The Maw was a notable entry, firmly holding onto a spot all month following a January release (which GamerBytes notes is a rare feat for XBLA releases). Of course, the most important thing to take away from this is that none of the aforementioned titles were Peggle, which is everyone's new virtual cocaine. We bow to our Unicorn masters.
Xbox Live Arcade February chart toppers originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Mar 2009 18:00:00 EST. Lace up your skates and grab a stick, because EA's over-the-top hockey game, 3 on 3 NHL Arcade, is this week's Xbox Live Arcade release. Fetching the tidy sum of 800 ($10), EA's title features more than just big heads, as it promises a "no rules, fast paced" version of the popular sport. Planning to hit the ice this Wednesday?
This Wednesday: 3 on 3 NHL Arcade on XBLA originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Feb 2009 02:00:00 EST. Europe wins the PSN war this week with its Killzone 2 demo and other assorted full games. America's update isn't dire, however, as 3 on 3 NHL Arcade is now available, along with the Burnout Paradise Party pack. There's also plenty of DLC -- as usual -- and PSP owners have a demo for Phantasy Star Portable to try out. That's probably the most exciting thing in today's update, to be honest.
We have a feeling that maybe, just maybe, EA has a total secret crush on PlayStation Network. Last week, it gave PS3 owners access to a free exclusive Mirror's Edge level. This week, it's giving PSN users one week early access to the first EA Sports-branded downloadable game, 3 on 3 NHL Arcade.

Matt Maher, lead designer of the game, explained the inspiration for NHL Arcade on the PlayStation.Blog. "There are no options out there for consumers to play an Arcade style hockey game ... and the NHL dev team felt that we could fill this void with a top quality product and give the users a game to enjoy."

NHL Arcade will feature online play and support for Trophies. The game will be available tomorrow for $9.99.

Because five on five hockey is overkill and oversized human heads always make things for lovable, EA just announced they'll be releasing 3 on 3 NHL Arcade to the Xbox Live Arcade sometime in February.

For 800 Microsoft points, gamers will be treated to a family friendly version of hockey that has no rules and by what we gather from the screenshot above, will be violent. We're traditionally not interested in mixing sports with our video games, but truth be told, we're suckers for oversized heads. They're so creepy, yet at the same time alluring.
In a move that might -- might -- get us excited to play a hockey game again, EA has announced 3 on 3 NHL Arcade, a super-deformed "hockey-lite" coming to XBLA and PSN in February for $10. EA describes it as a "no rules, fast paced" take on the sport (though we're assuming there are some rules, as tempting as "Calvinhockey" sounds) that's being developed by EA Canada, the house behind NHL 09.

So, is your interest piqued? Is it at least pucqued? We know we haven't been this excited about hockey since the mid-90s when Fox found those magical glowing pucks at the top of a beanstalk.
EA's 3 on 3 NHL Arcade skates on to XBLA, PSN in February originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 05 Dec 2008 09:00:00 EST.
Hardcore gamers sure do hate tacked-on waggle. Indeed, no one likes to flail their arms around like they're trying to signal aircraft when a simple button press will do. And the guys on the other sides seem to be under the impression that the Wii is nothing but a PS2 that replaces thumb pressing with wrist flicking. So when a new title or an iteration of an existing franchise gets announced for the Wii, the non-believers tend to thumb their snooty noses and prattle amongst themselves with ingenious statements like "Dead Rising on the Wii? More like Waggle Rising. YEAH! HIGH FIVE, BRAH!" All right, maybe they're not quite as neanderthalic, but the sentiment remains: the use of waggle is often met with skepticism from the core.

To ignore the importance of waggle would be to forget what makes the Wii so awesome. Sure, some games have no real need for motion-based controls, but let us not forget the joy and immersion experienced by the non-gamer who first picked up a Wiimote and found themselves instantly engaged in a lively tennis match. To downplay motion controls would be to forget what made the Wii so successful in the first place. Without it, the Wii would be just a beefed-up GameCube. (THERE, I said it!) Just for a moment, let us forget about why Super Mario RPG has yet to be released on the North American Virtual Console and go back to the flood of imagination we felt when the Wiimote was first unveiled. Here are the activities we wish were made into games on the Wii.

Of course this could translate to a number of ideas so before we get bent out of shape we should consider it doesn't have to be a bad thing.

Consider a subscription based model that would drop by-the-minute roster updates for your favorite sports games over multiple seasons rather than having to plunk down another full retail chunk of change. While we can't guess what might, if anything at all does, come of this idea we can at least credit EA for being one of the publishers that keeps trying to innovate. Whether some like it or not.
EA Sports looking into possible subscription program future originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 30 Jul 2008 11:00:00 EST.
We haven't highlighted many sports games at E3 (unless you count Wii Sports Resort), but NHL: 2K9 is different, as it's the first legitimate hockey game to hit Nintendo's console. We are some very hockey-starved individuals, so we're keeping a cautious eye on this one. You can see a little bit of the game for yourselves in the demo above, and maybe we're just easy to please, but we like what we've seen so far.

Ignoring the fact that the 2K rep is blatantly (and unconvincingly) reading a script, we appreciate some of the features he highlighted. Getting into fights sounds like fun (and makes us wistful for the days of Mutant League Hockey), as well as the simple but clever Zamboni driving. Seriously, who's never wanted to drive a Zamboni? At least we'll sort of get the chance now, even if it has to be through virtual means.

The rep also takes special care to mention the Wii game and its controls, which he says are simple but work well (as you hold the Wiimote like a hockey stick). Sounds good to us.

NHL for the Wii? All we can say is, it's about damn time.

Sure we've had football, baseball, soccer, and even tennis grace our precious white consoles, but hockey has been sorely missing from the group -- unless you count Ice Hockey and Kidz Sports Ice Hockey, which we don't. Finally, 2K Sports has stepped up and is bringing NHL 2K9 to the Wii. We don't know much about the game, except that it's coming, which is enough for us at the moment. Oh, and it will utilize the Wii's motion controls, in case you had any doubts.

[Via press release]
NHL Hockey finally comes to the Wii originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Jun 2008 14:45:00 EST. Sure he and his team may have missed the playoffs yet again and are likely fantasizing about what might have been while swinging at balls from the back nine, but that hasn't stopped Columbus Blue Jackets' young-yet-impressive captain Rick Nash from scoring cover duty on Take Two's fall release of NHL 2K9. Also worthy of note from 2K is that developer Visual Concepts has "taken over" development duties for this latest game in the franchise -- as opposed we assume to working in tandem with fellow studio Kush Games -- and that the devs are rebuilding the title "from the ground up."

Not to take anything away from three-time All Star Nash, but it's still an odd choice, at least by team standings, given the Blue Jackets' once again abysmal campaign during the 2007-08 regular season that saw the fledgling team rank near the bottom of both the Western Conference and overall league in points. However, perhaps those who make these kinds of decisions are hoping this is the sort of voodoo that will turn Ohio's NHL franchise around -- sort of like a reverse Madden curse.
Blue Jackets' Nash to front NHL 2K9 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 16 May 2008 02:00:00 EST. This is especially true when games are used to lift the spirits of hospitalized children, something we've seen in efforts like Child's Play and the Get-Well-Gamers Foundation. Now, Microsoft has become the latest gaming organization to follow its moral compass, inking a partnership with NHL legend Pat LaFontaine's nonprofit Companions in Courage to bring 450 Xbox 360 game kiosks to children's hospitals in the US.

The kiosks will come pre-loaded with select games, movies and television content, and will allow children to play games and chat with each other across a private "safety-enhanced" flavor of Xbox Live. The kiosks will be rolled out in waves, with the first wave being kicked off with three simultaneous events today at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of New York-Presbyterian, the Children's Hospital of Orange County in California, and the Children's Hospital & Regional Medical Center of Seattle, the latter of which will feature a presentation by Microsoft exec Robbie Bach.
Continue reading Microsoft, Companions in Courage partner to bring Xbox Live to children's hospitals

Microsoft, Companions in Courage partner to bring Xbox Live to children's hospitals originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 23 Apr 2008 12:30:00 EST.
Nintendojo recently contacted EA to verify the platform release list. As it turns out, NHL 07 will not be released for GameCube -- or for that matter, Wii. Currently, 2K Sports' NHL 2K7 is not scheduled for release on GameCube either.

Electronic Arts publicist Jen Riley did make it a point to remind Nintendojo, "Many of our other games are continuing to support DS ... and we hope to be on Wii in the future."

*NHL 07 will be available for PC, PlayStation 2, PSP, Xbox, and Xbox 360. Note that PlayStation 3 is also absent from the list.
NHL 07 benched on Nintendo platforms originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Jun 2006 16:55:00 EST.
