If you're like us, then you've been cruising the Wii aisles at Best Buy and Target, hoping you might be there at the magical moment when a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/17/wii-production-expansion-delayed/">shipment comes in</a> and snag a Wii fresh off the truck. However, all that usually comes in are a fresh batch of <em>Friends</em> DVDs, or possibly more copies of XXX.<br /><br />Well, now you can win a Wii without having to register your credit card somewhere, buy a raffle ticket, or sell a kidney. That's right, sit there in the comfort of your chair/beanbag/couch/captain's set. <a href="http://www.thisnext.com/">ThisNext</a> and Cool Hunting have teamed up to give you a Wii, so <a href="http://www.coolhunting.com/archives/2007/08/be_a_wiiner.php">check out the details</a> for their "Be A Wii-Ner" (oh not they didn't) contest and get yourself a Wii for free.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/wanna-winna-wii-go-do-some-cool-hunting/">Wanna Winna Wii? <p><em>Every Tuesday, Mike Sylvester brings you <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/revolutionary/">REVOLUTIONARY</a>, a look at the wide world of Wii possibilities. </em><br /></p>
<p><span style="float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-top: 7px;"> <script> var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gaming_news/DIY_Wii_balance_board_used_to_play_snowboarding_game'; </script> <script src="http://digg.com/api/diggthis.js"></script></span>Inspired by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/11/e307-get-body-conscious-like-the-cho-aniki-dudes-with-wii-fit/">Nintendo's</a> own design, the work of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/20/friday-video-who-needs-a-fancy-balance-board/">another DIYer</a>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/alisha-karabinus/">Alisha's</a> challenge, I ventured to design and build my own "balance board." For a little more than $20 in materials, I've conceived an oversized Wiimote shell to translate exaggerated body movements into game commands through <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/12/revolutionary-introducing-glovepie/">GlovePIE</a>. I'm going to show you how I made it, and how it plays.<br /></p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/14/revolutionary-balance-boarder/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Revolutionary: Balance Boarder</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/14/revolutionary-balance-boarder/">Revolutionary: Balance Boarder</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Aug 2007 12:00:00 EST. My Name Is" entitled <a href="http://www.sarcasticgamer.com/2007/07/i-hate-this-wii-song.html">"I Hate This Wii".</a> Yes, we find it hilarious and think you shall download it for a good laugh too. But before a flame war surfaces and the whole state of California goes up in flames we should say this; We've previously mentioned Sarcastic Gamer's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/17/sing-along-to-the-ring-of-fire-song-parody/">"The Ring of Fire"</a> song which makes fun of the Xbox 360, their <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/23/wake-me-up-when-the-ps3-has-games/">"No Frickin' Games"</a> song mocking the PS3 and even a parody of Microsoft's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/20/microsoft-surface-that-big-table-computer/">Surface</a>. So, it's only right that the Nintendo Wii get its feelings hurt a little too. Come on guys, fanboys can laugh at eachother especially when it's in musical form and the production is this top notch. Ahh screw it, flame away!<br /><br />[Thanks, COV3RT SN1P3R]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/16/we-dont-hate-this-wii-song-parody/">We don't hate this Wii song parody</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 Jul 2007 16:00:00 EST. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime even <a href="http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/07/reggie-no-wii-f.html">stated</a> that the company still needs to research the cost of its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/wii-warm-up-surfin-skatin-potential-heartbreakin-with-the-bal/">Balance Board controller</a> before pricing can be accurately determined.<br /><br /><em>Wii Fit's</em> product pages at EB Games and GameStop, however, list a placeholder price which is pretty much in line with what we're expecting -- $69.99. That might seem like highway robbery to those who naively hoped for the usual $50, but when you compare it with the expensive fares people will be paying to play games like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/10/the-wii-guitar-hero-controller-first-image/"><em>Guitar Hero 3</em></a> or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/12/wii-warm-up-rock-band-to-empty-wii-owners-wallets/"><em>Rock Band</em></a>, the bundle's pricing doesn't seem too unreasonable. Our only concern is that $70 might be too much for the casual audience Nintendo is hoping to attract with <em>Wii Fit</em>.<br /><br /><br />[Via <a href="http://digg.com/nintendo_wii/Wii_Fit_listed_on_EBgames_com_at_69_99_Includes_Wii_Fit_and_balance_board">Digg</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/16/rumor-wii-fit-priced-at-69-99/">Rumor: Wii Fit priced at $69.99?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 Jul 2007 13:55:00 EST. The latter half of this two-minute movie even features that curious portion of the E3 trailer in which the level builds itself as Mario moves around.<br /><br />How will we make it to November 12th without our heads exploding from all this exciting media? Tears of joy came to our eyes, salty with the nostalgia of <span style="font-style: italic;">Super Mario Bros. 3's</span> frog suit, raccoon leaf, and other fondly-remembered power-ups.<br /><br />GameTrailers has a six-minute developer walkthrough of Honey Bee Galaxy, explaining the game's two-player mechanics and Mario's bee apparel along the way. Buzz past the post break for the video honeypot and an awkward clip in which Mario gropes a distressed queen bee.<br /><br /><strong>See also:</strong> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/hands-on-with-super-mario-galaxy/">Hands-on with Super Mario Galaxy</a><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/smg-developer-walkthrough-honey-bee-galaxy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E307: SMG developer walkthrough - Honey Bee Galaxy</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/smg-developer-walkthrough-honey-bee-galaxy/">E307: SMG developer walkthrough - Honey Bee Galaxy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 12 Jul 2007 10:40:00 EST. Whipping the Diskarmor around sounds like one of those things that would naturally be perfect for the Wiimote. And we thought, based on the brand-new character art and the title-- <em>Project Rygar--</em> that we were in for some big new stuff. After all, if it's a "Project," that means it's a pretty intensive undertaking, right? One that takes a lot of time and effort on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Tecmo/">Tecmo</a>'s part?<br /><br />Yeah, it's a port of the PS2 game <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rygar:_The_Legendary_Adventure">Rygar: The Legendary Adventure</a>. </em>The one from 2002. That's a little depressing! But hey, if it helps, the PS2 game was a fairly competent <em>Devil May Cry</em>-alike. And Tecmo is promising new content in the form of the newly-designed main character and, more significantly, a new Wiimote-friendly battle mode.<br /><br /><br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=170732">NeoGAF</a>]<br /><br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/project-rygar-not-as-big-a-project-as-we-thought/">Project Rygar not as big a project as we thought</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 12 Jul 2007 09:50:00 EST. How unkind the years have been to you! We remember the days when you dashed through Green Hill Zone at breakneck speeds, a blue, blast-processed blur. Look at you now, wheezing while just keeping pace with an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/06/perry-bible-fellowship-tackles-super-mario-bros/">obese plumber</a>. You make us sick.<br /><br />We're not sure whose idea it was to pit these two rivals against each other in a footrace, but they're to blame for our harsh words with <a href="http://dsfanboy.com/tag/sega">Sega's</a> mascot. Four new screenshots showing off <em>Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympic Games</em> have been unveiled and dropped into our gallery below. Though this image of our favorite hedgehog lagging behind in a sprint event is downright deplorable, we were happy to see Luigi's arms thrust up in victory for a change. <br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/">Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympic Games</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#856006"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/800px-mariosonicolympicsdk-cg-jun11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#856005"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/800px-mariosonicolympicsbirdo-cg-jun11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#856004"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/800px-mariosonicolympicsjet-cg-jun11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#433842"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/msog_10910ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#433841"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/msog_10908ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/10/sonic-has-not-been-training-for-the-olympics/">Sonic has not been training for the Olympics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Jul 2007 17:40:00 EST. <div align="left">Konami has released some screens of their new Wii-style <em>Dance Dance Revolution</em>, entitled <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/06/ddr-hottest-party-site-launches/">Dance Dance Revolution HOTTEST PARTY</a>. </em>And it mostly looks like a DDR game, with some small adjustments. <em>Hottest Party </em>(we're going to stop with the caps, if that's all right) includes the same Free Play and Diet Modes as other <em>DDR </em>games, but also includes simultaneous four-player mode for people with really big living rooms.<br /><br />The most noticeable adjustment is head size. That's funny, and a little weird, but totally cosmetic and won't get in the way of anyone's Dance Dance Revolving. What's a little more interesting than cranial embiggening is the Wiimote/Nunchuk usage. There seem to be special arrows that instruct players to point their hands in a certain direction, much like <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samba_De_Amigo">Samba de Amigo</a>.</em> Sometimes even the on-screen characters hold Wiimotes and Nunchuks.<br /><br />The dance pad has made it to the Wii pretty much unscathed, with no <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/10/the-wii-guitar-hero-controller-first-image/">Wiimote-shaped cavities</a> or anything. It's a basic dance pad in a Wii color scheme. It appears to be wired, probably USB. We didn't need more-- with the extra waggling, this game seems complicated enough!<br /><br /></div>

We <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/09/more-like-nights-journey-of-dreamcasts/">said</a> we wouldn't get hung up on graphics if the gameplay was good. And, well, after watching these two videos of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/NiGHTS/">NiGHTS</a>: Journey of Dreams, </em>we are feeling a sensation we haven't felt in a long time: <em>real <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Sega/">Sega</a> love.</em> You could put a copy of <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_Shuffle">Sonic Shuffle</a> </em>in front of us and we'd totally play it. Our minds aren't changed about the textures, but we find it very hard to care right now.<br />
<br />
What you see in the video is <span style="font-style: italic;">authentic NiGHTS.</span> Sega hasn't changed it into a minigame collection or a training game or even a 3D platformer. They didn't give him <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_the_Hedgehog">a gun and a car</a>. This is a real sequel to the Saturn game in 2.5D, just like God intended. Ignore the Disney-esque narration and flourishes in the trailer. They are irrelevant.<br />
<em><br />
</em>For some reason, these videos aren't embedded at Gamespot's <span style="font-style: italic;">NiGHTS </span>page, despite using the Gamespot player. You can, however, download a high-resolution version of the gameplay video there. They are embedded after the break. Please watch them and improve your day!<em><br />

It's a perfect week to sit in your apartment alone all day playing role-playing games. Now, if only that apartment didn't have to be located in Japan for us to take advantage.<br /><br />Normally, when an RPG <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romance_of_the_Three_Kingdoms_IV:_Wall_of_Fire">shows</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sword_of_Vermilion">up</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beyond_Oasis">on</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_Dungeons">the</a> Virtual Console, it's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/26/vc-tuesday-hey-an-rpg/">big news</a>. This week, Japan gets <em>three,</em> one of which is <em>very big news indeed</em> as the confluence of a good N64 game, an RPG, and a Mario game.<br />

Like the one for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, it's based on the Gibson Les Paul shape, with a removable solid white faceplate. However, <em>unlike</em> the version for the other systems, it's got a big cavity in it for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Wiimote/">Wiimote</a>, which a lot of us expected.<br /><br />Does the fact that we have already bought about $40 worth of this controller make the $90 price for game and guitar too high? It's an old argument, but now that we have a little more information, it may be worth thinking about again.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gaygamer.net/2007/07/activision_and_gibson_combinin.html">GayGamer</a>]<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/10/the-wii-guitar-hero-controller-first-image/">The Wii Guitar Hero controller: First image!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Jul 2007 09:50:00 EST. Okay, before we start talking about these new <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/NiGHTS/">NiGHTS</a> </em>screenshots, we'll preface ourselves. We are huge <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Sega/">Sega</a> fanboys from way back. We played hours of <a href="http://www.defunctgames.com/shows.php?id=review-548"><em>Penguin Land</em></a>. We were excited about the bundled <a href="http://classicgaming.gamespy.com/View.php?view=GameMuseum.Detail&amp;id=78"><em>Altered Beast</em></a> in the first Genesis boxes. <em>NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams</em> is right up at the top of our "most wanted" list, no matter what. We don't really care about graphics if the gameplay is good. <strong>We love Sega, and we aren't graphics snobs.</strong><br /><br />But we have to say that these new screens of <em>NiGHTS </em>don't look that hot. Specifically, the textures are horribly blurry. This is pretty disappointing. <em>NiGHTS </em>should be a visual feast. It doesn't help that Jeux France's images are in double the Wii's native resolution. They look better in a more Wii-like 640x360 resolution, as they appear in our gallery, but even so, those textures are pretty dire. We know the Wii can do better than this, and we know that Sega can do better than this.<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/09/more-like-nights-journey-of-dreamcasts/">More like NiGHTS: Journey of Dreamcasts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 09 Jul 2007 17:30:00 EST. Eric gently implied that he was not a fan of Spielberg's intentions for the Wii. Since this is a rather divisive issue, he suggested I offer a counterpoint to his assessment that the other systems are getting the better deal. And, since I generally enjoy disagreeing with things, I accepted. But, being a professional grump, I couldn't decide <em>which </em>part to disagree with.<br /><br />First, then, I'll take the cynical approach and disagree with the potential quality assessment. This is the idea that the action game sounds better than the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Jenga/">Jenga</a>-</em>inspired puzzle game we're getting. Well, I'll tell you right now, a game that is one long escort mission built around an AI that is supposed to be adaptive? That sounds basically like torture.<br /><br />Second, I'll address the idea that we're getting shorted on non-casual content. This is just true. However, from Spielberg's perspective, it's a smarter decision to put the puzzle game on the Wii. In fact, he probably thinks that the money from the Wii game will help fund the riskier one on the other systems. Between the Wii, the DS, Flash games, and cell phones, we're in the midst of a casual games revolution. Spielberg has always made populist movies, and it's no surprise that he'd jump straight for the widest possible audience with games.<br /><br />These two seemingly unrelated points allow me to arrive at a fairly tidy conclusion: we have the choice of a terrible game that won't sell, or an insubstantial but potentially fun game that'll make a bundle. And, most importantly, no games based on <em>A.I.</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/09/counterpoint-spielbergs-game/">Counterpoint: Spielberg's game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 09 Jul 2007 14:30:00 EST. Even with a diminished E3, there's no controlling the wave of rumors that hit the Internet every year before the show. Why fight it? From now until E3 hits, we'll be posting one piece of wild speculation every day. Some may be patently ridiculous, and others just might turn out to be true. Even some of the ridiculous ones might turn out to be true! Rest assured, <em>everything will be totally made-up and unfounded.</em> Except, of course, when we speak about all the ass Reggie is going to kick. That part? Totally true.<br /><br /><strong>Rumor: </strong>The dentist game we've all been expecting since Nintendo first revealed the Wii remote will finally be announced. Titled <em>Open Wide</em>, this orthodontic release will feature minigames like filling cavities and fleecing parents out of thousands of dollars by recommending that their children wear braces for the next decade. Though you'll be able to trade dental x-rays with your friends, online multiplayer support will <strong>not</strong> be included. According to developers, working with Nintendo's WiFi connection was like pulling teeth. Austrian developer Bplus announced that they have the official okay from Nintendo to release a game on the download service. The game, <em>Plattchen Twist 'n' Paint</em>, is a "puzzle shooter ... which has been designed specifically for Wii and its innovative new controller." No idea when it'll come out, of course, since that would inadvertently tip Nintendo's hand about the real Wii Ware release timeline. Assume a release date <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/27/poll-wiiwares-real-launch-date/">between</a> "2007 holiday season!" and "When monkeys fly out of my butt."<br /><br />Bplus was smart to make this announcement <em>now </em>when it'll get the most attention. We get the feeling that there will be a massive influx of Wii Ware announcements in a few days.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.4colorrebellion.com/archives/2007/07/07/twistnpaint-%e2%80%93-wiis-first-announced-downloading-game/">4cr</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/09/wii-wares-first-plattchen-twist-n-paint/">Wii Ware's first: Plattchen Twist 'n' Paint</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 09 Jul 2007 09:50:00 EST. Variety magazine, a mainstay daily trade for folks in the entertainment business, has an <a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117968201.html?categoryid=20&amp;cs=1">article</a> out about the scaled-down E3 and what it'll mean to the gaming industry this year. Basically it's a summary of everything you probably already knew about this year's E3, but it shows how all eyes will be turning towards the show this week, just as if it was E3 as usual. They cover the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/09/sony-confirms-80gb-playstation-3-and-price-drop-for-60gb-model/">now-confirmed</a> PS3 price cut rumor and speculate that Microsoft will most likely follow suit, or will possibly improve what's in the box, like maybe bundling that HD-DVD player finally?<br /><br />They also mention the biggies that will hopefully be shown off for the majors, including <em>Killzone 2</em> for the PS3, <em>Mass Effect </em>for the 360, and <em>Super Smash Bros.</em> for the Wii. We're certainly hoping there will be more than three games at E3 this year, and if you could see our E3 appointment calendar for this week, you'd think we might be wishing there were only three. There's going to be a boatload of information later this week, so be sure to stay tuned.<br /><br />We love how they say Nintendo basically doesn't have to do anything at E3, other than mention some game dates. Even Nintendo's George Harrison says "Nintendo goes as its own pace. It always does things its own way." As Fleetwood Mac would say, you can go your own way ... but you'd better be giving us some <em>Super Mario Galaxy</em> and <em>Super Smash Bros</em>. dates when you do.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/09/variety-reports-on-e3-the-industrys-biggest-event/">Variety reports on E3, "The industry's biggest event"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 09 Jul 2007 08:01:00 EST. <ul>
    <li>an action-puzzle simulator that "neatly blends the creativity of the building-blocks game <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Jenga/"><em>Jenga</em></a> with the charm of a Saturday-morning cartoon," or </li>
    <li>a game in which "you're an ex-secret agent, and the bond that you forge while on the run with [a] computer-controlled woman -- good, bad, indifferent -- determines the nature of her special abilities and the ways in which she'll assist you." </li>
</ul>
We hope you picked the former because that's the project <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ElectronicArts/">Electronic Arts</a> and the famed director plan to bring to the Wii! The other title -- the one which <em>Newsweek's</em> N'Gai Croal described as "yet another hit" from Spielberg -- is headed for the Xbox 360 and the PS3. Expounding on the Wii action-puzzle sim, code-named <em>PQRS</em>, Spielberg explained, "It just seemed like a great thing for the entire family to play together over Christmas." We bet you can't wait for Christmas!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/08/spielberg-enters-booming-jenga-genre/">Spielberg enters booming Jenga genre</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 08 Jul 2007 11:15:00 EST. This exotic <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wriststrap">wrist strap</a> claims to make use of bio-ceramics, a composite of lead-free minerals, to douse your arm with <em>far infrared rays</em> and help with blood circulation. Though "far infrared rays" might sound sinister if you're not familiar with them and their uses, they are supposedly quite <a href="http://www.earthtym.net/ref-far-infared.htm">healthy</a>.<br /><br />You can't see far infrared rays in the sun's light, but you can feel their warmth absorbed into your skin. In addition to their blood circulation benefits, these miracle beams are also said to naturally reduce inflammation, decrease pain, and revitalize skin cells. All that for only 780 yen (approximately $6.33)!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/07/far-infrared-handstrap-mysteries-of-the-unknown/">Far Infrared HandStrap: Mysteries of the Unknown</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 07 Jul 2007 19:00:00 EST. This probably doesn't affect any readers here (although, if you're a Japan-local Wii Fanboy, let us know!) but we discovered something interesting while drooling at the Japanese Virtual Console page.<br /><br />Proving their <em>absolute </em>and irrational devotion to historical accuracy, the version of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Castlevania/">Castlevania</a> </em>going up on the VC this month will not be the same cartridge version that's already been released in the US and Europe. Instead, Japan is getting the original version, which was released for the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Famicom_Disk_System">Famicom Disk System</a> in 1986. The differences include a save state feature and a name entry screen with music unheard in the US version! Which, unfortunately, we can't find. The idea that there's <em>Castlevania </em>music out there that we haven't heard makes us kind of uncomfortable.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/06/japanese-vc-castlevania-is-the-famicom-disk-system-version/">Japanese VC Castlevania is the Famicom Disk System version</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 06 Jul 2007 17:05:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">We recently <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/19/rumor-atari-building-wii-jenga-game/">reported</a> that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Atari/">Atari</a> would show a <span style="font-style: italic;">Jenga </span>game at E3. We wondered if it was going to be just <span style="font-style: italic;">Jenga</span> or some kind of expanded game based on the concept of <span style="font-style: italic;">Jenga</span>. It's just <span style="font-style: italic;">Jenga</span>.<br /><br />What does the Wii bring to the table (so to speak) that the original game doesn't have? Well, the ability to play <span style="font-style: italic;">Jenga</span> on top of a castle, or in front of a lighthouse, or in someone's living room-- and the ability to do so <span style="font-style: italic;">as an icon of a snowman.<br /><br /></span>Where Wii <span style="font-style: italic;">Jenga</span> fails and real <span style="font-style: italic;">Jenga </span>exceeds, however, is in the graphics. The original <span style="font-style: italic;">Jenga</span>'s wood texture looks absolutely lifelike, while the texture is quite blurry and unrealistic on the Wii.</div>

Turn out the lights, get some popcorn and pull up to your computer: it's time for Extremely Short Horror Theater! This week, we've got a<em> super spooky</em> treat for all of you fright fans: a <em>chiller</em> from the <em>masters of horror </em>at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Capcom/">Capcom</a>, called "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/supersearch/?q=umbrella&amp;sort=date">The Evil Residents and the Umbrella</a>," about a town full of arthritic pedestrians <em>terrorized</em> by a group of militaristic, gun-wielding murderers! We're sure you'll have such a <em>screaming</em> good time that the name "Residence of Evil" will haunt you for years to come!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.famitsu.com/game/news/2007/07/06/103,1183690506,74671,0,0.html?ref=rss">Famitsu</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/06/new-resident-evil-umbrella-chronicles-movie/">New Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles movie</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 06 Jul 2007 09:50:00 EST. If you're trying to go into this game with no knowledge whatsoever, go ahead and skip this post.<br /><br />But since we don't think there's anyone out there on a <em>Simpsons Game</em> Media Blackout, and since both our sources published this right in the headline, we'll go ahead and reveal the BIG TIME SPOILER: Simpsons creator <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Groening">Matt Groening</a> will be appearing in the game as the final boss.<br /><br />"I'm a boss that you have to fight at the end of the game. It was really fun recording a million ways of dying, going 'UGGH, ARGGH, EUURGH!'"<br /><br />Between the preponderance of old and new <em>Simpsons </em>characters, and the video-game-parodying plot, <em>The Simpsons Game</em> actually sounds pretty great!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=26391">GamesIndustry.biz</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/05/the-simpsons-meet-their-maker/">The Simpsons meet their maker</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 05 Jul 2007 17:15:00 EST. The guy's camera must have been made out of paper itself-- or maybe it was a camera-shaped cake that could only take real pictures by a freak accident. Alternately, it could have been a cell phone.<br /><br />But even in low detail, you get the idea. A <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/craft">crafter</a> named Patrick made a tiny <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/papercraft">papercraft</a> Wii and Wiimote that any strong waggle could blow away. It would make a nice companion piece to that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/07/playing-wii-on-a-1-5-inch-set/">teensy TV</a> from earlier this year. Now if only we could get the template, so we could amass an army of non-functioning Mini-Wiis.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://com4.runboard.com/btoysandfanart.f1.t42">Paper Art Gadgets</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/05/papercraft-wii-possibly-photographed-with-papercraft-camera/">Papercraft Wii, possibly photographed with papercraft camera</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 05 Jul 2007 15:00:00 EST. It mostly contains too-small images of NiGHTS flying around, which-- thankfully-- look great. There's some kind of ... peacock creature, maybe?<br /><br />The page highlights NiGHTS' new human counterpart, Helen Cartwright, a young violinist. We assume that, like the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nights_into_dreams#Characters">previous game's children</a>, she experiences performance anxiety and seeks solace in her dreams. Whatever the motivation, she frees NiGHTS so we can start playing the <em>real </em>game. And for that we must thank the frilly-jacketed, fictional child. Honestly, we don't expect much beyond bug fixes. Added waggle controls, then? Not if we're lucky. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/04/wii-warm-up-a-question-of-multiplayer/">Online battles</a>, at least? Though this is implemented in the upcoming XBLA version, and the new product page mentions the ability to "Battle other Warlords for supremacy via wireless multiplayer," this seems like a fool's hope. That bullet-pointed feature was most likely gleaned from a previous press release, and it seems far too early for a niche release on the Wii to support online multiplayer. <br /><br />You'll find no truer friends of Infinite Interactive than us, but there are just so many ways a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/port">port</a> like this can be messed up.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/04/puzzle-quest-extends-its-empire-to-the-wii/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/04/rumor-puzzle-quest-coming-to-wii/">Rumor: Puzzle Quest coming to Wii?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 04 Jul 2007 15:00:00 EST. Never let it be said that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/EA/">EA</a> can't innovate! Whatever we usually think of EA Sports, their new Family Play control system is <em>really</em> cool. <em><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Madden/">Madden</a> '08, NBA Live '08, </em>and <em>FIFA Soccer '08</em> will all include <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Wiimote/">Wiimote</a>-and-<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Nunchuk/">Nunchuk</a>-based control schemes that will allow players to "take full control of the game"-- running, passing, kicking (not so much in <em>NBA Live</em>) and such. But they'll <em>also</em> include simplified Wiimote-only control schemes that reduce the games to Wii Sports-level . The controls become fully gestural, and the AI takes over some of the gameplay tasks that were previously yours. <br />
<br />
The coolest part? You can switch back and forth on the fly, just by plugging in or unplugging the Nunchuk. Even the method of <em>choosing </em>controls is streamlined. We are quite impressed.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/04/ea-sports-introduces-kid-friendly-waggle-called-family-play/">EA Sports introduces kid-friendly waggle with "Family Play"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 04 Jul 2007 13:45:00 EST. <div align="left">We aren't even sure anyone was looking forward to this one, but we <em>kinda were, </em>a little. The Japanese puzzle-action game<em> <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2007/06/29/go-go-minon-is-here-to-save-the-day/">Go! Go! Minon</a></em> is about a superhero who can materialize trails of dominoes. His super power is also his Achilles' heel, since his movement is limited to those trails. <a href="http://www.mastiff-games.com/">Mastiff</a> is rumored to be planning a US release for this as <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._D_Goes_to_Town">Mr. D Goes to Town</a>.</em><br /></div>
<br />Any time a Japanese game is colorful and quirky, the word <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Katamari/">Katamari</a> </em>comes out and our ears perk up. In fact, Siliconera mentioned both <em><a href="http://katamari.namco.com/">Katamari Damacy</a> </em>and <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gitaroo_Man">Gitaroo Man</a> </em>in <em>the first sentence of this article,</em> ensuring that we would read it<em>. Gitaroo Man </em>is a certain blogger's favorite game, and <em>Katamari </em>is pretty close, despite neither of these actually being on Nintendo consoles.<br /><br />Unfortunately, the palette and the wackiness are apparently the only similarities between this and <em>Katamari.</em> Siliconera cites excessively limited domino-dropping gameplay, movement that is also hampered by the domino mechanic, and checkpoints that drop Minon in seemingly random, nonsensical locations as game-breaking issues. It's really too bad the game isn't great, because <em>dude, look at that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/boxart/">boxart</a></em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/04/siliconera-drives-mr-d-out-of-town/">Siliconera drives Mr. D out of town</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 04 Jul 2007 12:30:00 EST. <div align="left">This week, Japan got three games that we don't have yet in the US-- no surprise there. But we already had <em>Splatterhouse </em>on our Virtual Console, so <em>we totally win in that one specific competition that isn't really a competition.</em><br /><br />The non-<em>Splatterhouse </em>games include <em>another shooter,</em> a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flappy">Paleolithic puzzle game</a> that we'd never heard of, and a completely awesome ninja game that we'd love to see over here ASAP. And, since it <em>did</em> come out over here (as <em>Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master</em>), we are not crazy to expect it!</div>

<div align="left">Even with a diminished E3, there's no controlling the wave of rumors that hit the Internet every year before the show. Why fight it? From now until E3 hits, we'll be posting one piece of wild speculation every day. Some may be patently ridiculous, and others just might turn out to be true. Even some of the ridiculous ones might turn out to be true! Totally true.<br /><br /><strong>Rumor: </strong>Having peeked into the distant and dystopian future of <em>December 2007</em> through the mystic arts of augury and tea leaf reading, we've discerned several <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/02/dojo-update-assist-trophies/">Assist Trophy</a> characters that are guaranteed to appear in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/smashbros">Super Smash Bros. We say it is! <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/NoMoreHeroes/">No More Heroes</a></em> is the pinnacle of Wii awesomeness. Unfortunately the G4 website is the nadir of annoying Flash navigation. You have to click "Videos," then the X-Play icon, <em>then</em> the <em>No More Heroes </em>link. But once you've jumped through all those hoops-- <em>beautiful gameplay footage. </em>And English voice acting!<br /><br /><em>No More Heroes </em>looks as stylish and cool in motion as it does in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/22/need-more-no-more-heroes/">stills</a>. Sword combat looks great, with insane duels ending in explosions of blood. It looks like a <em>real action game</em>-- much more so than <em>Killer 7.</em> The motion-controlled Beam Katana charging is, well, <em>inspired. </em>The wrestling moves appear numerous. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/15/minigames-strike-again-taitos-furufuru-park/"><em>Furu Furu Park</em></a>, Taito's self-referential minigame collection, is coming to the US courtesy of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Majesco/">Majesco</a>. Normally, we're all GRR TOO MANY MINIGAMES. But this one's got <em>Arkanoid</em> bits in it, so it gets a pass.<br /><br />In other words, Taito has figured out the winning formula for making us care about a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/minigame/">minigame</a> collection: <strike>well-designed gameplay</strike> making it look like old games. It may even be fun, with games like <em>Super Karate</em> (in which you waggle karate moves), <em>Safe Cracker </em>(The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Wiimote/">Wiimote</a> becomes your, uh, combination lock dial!) and <em>Bubble Bobble</em> (which is <em>Bubble Bobble!</em>) Man, that version of <em>Bubble Bobble </em>looks <em>sharp.</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/02/furu-furu-park-making-a-surprise-trip-to-the-us/">Furu Furu Park making a surprise trip to the US</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 02 Jul 2007 16:05:00 EST. It <em>won't die.</em> It's come back again, this time with psychotic reasoning behind it.<br /><br />IGN's Matt Casamassina has "100 percent reliable" word from mysterious, anonymous sources that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/BandaiNamco/">Bandai Namco</a> is planning a version of the game on Wii. As the story goes, they encountered difficulty porting <em>Beautiful Katamari </em>to the PS3, so Namco decided to scrap it and create a new Wii version instead.<br /><br />This is really the part that arouses our suspicion. A port is too hard, so they switch over to an all-new game? It just sounds like an excuse to troll the PS3 and make the Wii look better at the same time. It may be true, but we're not taking that reasoning as an explanation for anything.<br /><br />We still aren't sure we should even care, with no <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keita_Takahashi">Keita Takahashi</a> involvement, but we can't help but become wistful when we think about a new <em><a href="http://gaygamer.net/2007/07/rumormongering_beautiful_katam_1.html">Katamari</a>.</em> We wish we could hear some final word about this. So if you loaded up Wii Fanboy today with the intention of procuring a slice of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=cake">cake</a>, you're out of luck.<br /><br />Acidmods forumer Gene0514 escaped the plastic tyranny of cheaply-made remote attachments from dubious Chinese manufacturers by creating his own <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tennis">Wii-Sports-Tennis</a></em>-compatible racket. There's nothing hi-tech about its construction; he basically just "secured" a controller onto a badminton racket with rubber bands. Even with the wrist strap fastened onto the handle, we can't imagine Nintendo ever condoning anything as precariously-fashioned as this for its games.<br /><br />Swing past the post break for more photos of the setup and its v2 model, a remote belted onto an actual tennis racket.</p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/01/a-wii-remote-strapped-onto-a-badminton-racket/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A Wii remote strapped onto a badminton racket</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/01/a-wii-remote-strapped-onto-a-badminton-racket/">A Wii remote strapped onto a badminton racket</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 01 Jul 2007 13:30:00 EST.
