Nintendo of America has finally announced the availability of a new colored Wii for North America. First spotted in a leaked GameStop ad, new Nintendo Wii bundles -- available in black or white -- will include a Wii MotionPlus and Wii Sports Resort. This is essentially the same bundle that has been available in Europe since late last year.

The enhanced bundles will be available at retail stores beginning May 9th for the same price as the current Wii package: $199.99. While it may not be the price drop some have been waiting for, Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime thinks the new bundle adds even more "value." In a press release, he stated: "By including even more of our top-quality hardware and software in the basic Wii system package, we're extending that commitment to entertainment and value. Now more than ever, consumers can count on Nintendo to deliver inclusive fun and advanced motion controls at a mass-market price."
Black Nintendo Wii bundle to include MotionPlus, Wii Sports Resort; available May 9 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 03 May 2010 08:08:00 EST. He says he's one to "play celebrity cards," and when his daughter said she wanted a Wii, he got busy. Calling up his local game store, The Hoff was told that no systems were left, but was quickly able to charm the clerk into admitting that the store had held one system back. "Hold that game. I will be over in 30 minutes," he said, eventually showing up to the store where a very shocked employee declared, "Knight Rider! Dude!"

Obviously, the store sold him the game system, and we imagine his daughter was incredibly happy that her dad used his celebrity to get it, but wouldn't it have been faster to just call up Nintendo? We heard Iwata's hooked on a feeling.
Hasselhoff taps 'celebrity card' to nab his daughter a Wii originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Mar 2009 02:00:00 EST. Publishing giant Ubisoft has announced its acquisition of Vancouver-based Action Pants Inc., along with plans to utilize the studio on a new sports game exclusively for Wii. Considering that most recent publisher news has concerned layoffs, we're pretty happy to report the birth of Ubisoft's first in-house studio on the west coast of North America.

"The creative talent at Action Pants made the decision an easy one," said Ubisoft's executive director of worldwide production studios, Christine Burgess-Quemard. Co-founder and executive partner at Action Pants Inc., Simon Andrews, shared the excitement and said the two companies have "similar values." Considering those "values" have included Ubiporting crappy games to the console in the past, let's hope these two skip the foreplay and get right down to the nitty gritty: creating actual worthwhile experiences on the Wii.

[Thanks, Tom!]
Ubisoft buys Action Pants Inc., making sports game for Wii originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 03 Feb 2009 16:26:00 EST. You wouldn't think the House of the Dead series would need a lengthy explanation, but Sega disagrees. Pre-ordering The House of The Dead: Overkill nets gamers a 32-page comic book, illustrated by Steve Copter of punk-band 'Black Mekon' fame. Available in traditional paper form at GameStop or digitally from Amazon, the comic stars Overkill protagonist Agent Washington and stripper-extraordinaire Varla Gunns, and details events that occur just before the start of the upcoming game. Here we thought the only explanation needed with House of the Dead was: "Shoot everything that isn't you ... and don't accidentally shoot any survivors."
An Overkill Primer: Pre-order House of the Dead, get prologue comic originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 27 Jan 2009 17:00:00 EST. Online analyst Hitwise is reporting that folks in the UK who're searching online for the perfect gift are searching for Wii Fit. With Reggie saying there won't be that many on store shelves, we can't blame them for heading online to try and track one down for the holidays. As you can see, the second item that UK shoppers seek is the Wii. Two years in and it's still going strong. We're expecting North Americans are searching for the same two items right about now.

Are any of you trying to pick up Wii Fit or the Wii this holiday? Is it a gift for a friend, loved one, family member, or yourself?

[Via CVG]
UK shoppers try to hunt down Wii Fit for this holiday originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 13 Nov 2008 12:42:00 EST. Before we get started, doesn't a "waggle suit" sound like the funnest thing anybody could possibly own? Yeah, we thought so too.

Anyway, Ohio-based Motiva says that the Wiimote violates a patent of that it filed in 2004 for "technology used to create a 'Human Movement Measurement System' comprising a hand-held tracking device in communication with a base station that can be used to create an interactive gaming experience, among other capabilities."

It's apparently such an obvious violation of the patent that it's only taken the company two years of the Wii appearing on every television station and magazine cover on the planet to notice it. If we seem vindictive, it could be thanks to Motiva's counselm who said, "Using someone else's technology without permission is theft. Nintendo makes video games where you get to play a thief, but that doesn't give them the right to be one."

What is he even talking about? Wario? We have no idea.
Nintendo slapped with another waggle suit originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 12 Nov 2008 11:45:00 EST. For many of you, your dream came true yesterday, as one of the most desired titles for the Virtual Console released. For many, Animal Crossing: City Folk looks a lot like the original GameCube game, both from a presentation standpoint and included features. Sure, Animal Crossing: City Folk has some new stuff, but none of it is really that innovative or indicative of the franchise going into any kind of new direction. It's basically the equivalent to treading water. But, it turns out that popular opinion may not be justified, as some new details regarding the game can be found in the upcoming issue of Nintendo Power.

First of all, those of you who spent time with Animal Crossing: Wild World on the DS, you can transfer your avatar over to the new game. Another cool DS-to-Wii feature will allow you to "take your travel data and download it to your DS." We've no idea what that will entail exactly, but it sounds promising.

As for the Wii game, the holiday-themed events will be returning. Jingle the Reindeer will be back for Toy Day and a new character, Zipper T. Bunny, will make an appearance for Bunny Day. Sound promising!

Continue reading Latest Nintendo Power dishes out new Animal Crossing details, including DS-to-Wii functionality

Latest Nintendo Power dishes out new Animal Crossing details, including DS-to-Wii functionality originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 22 Aug 2008 11:55:00 EST. Despite NoA's VP, Denise Kaigler, showing us all a graph with some lines on it, group manager of corporate PR at Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business, David Dennis, wants us all to know that the information presented in Kaigler's little chart is wrong. To help set the record straight (and also point out how awesome is company is, we guess), Dennis offered up the following tidbits of info:

Total third party sales for the Xbox 360 since launch is currently 67,929,999 units, followed by the Wii at 33,394,311 units and the PlayStation 3 at 19,976,325 units.

Third party sales for the Xbox 360 since the launch of the Wii and PS3 is 54,065,728 units, still almost double the Wii's 33,394,311 units.

If you take the total number of units sold and divide that by the number of titles released since November 2006, the Xbox 360 and the PS3 are selling more units per title on average than the Wii. This puts the Xbox 360 at 217,252 units per title, the PS3 at 156,065 units and the Wii at 132,517 units.

We have a feeling that any company can spin sales figures the right way, in their favor, but no matter how you slice it, the Wii is still on top overall. So take that, competition!

[Thanks, jimb!]
Microsoft: Wii third-party sales 'not a pretty story' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 11 Aug 2008 14:53:00 EST. Bungie and Microsoft have been attached at the hip for awhile now. Some gamers are Halo haters, a lot more are Halo lovers (folks do like to buy those games). While the likelihood of Halo releasing for other consoles is pretty darn slim, any future projects from the company could see release on platforms other than the Xbox 360.

During an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Bungie's lead AI programmer, Damian Isla, didn't discount the possibility of his company working on other systems, stating that for now "we are working on Xbox 360 with Microsoft but I don't know beyond that." His own interests lean toward the Wii, however, as he lauded it for its interface and appreciated the industry "moving in a direction where a much more casual gamer can come and pick up your game and wave a wand at a screen rather than learning ten different buttons to play Halo with the current Xbox 360 controller. That's really exciting and I think that's a very positive trend for the industry." We guess Damian isn't a subscriber to the Scott Steinberg philosophy of gaming.

We couldn't agree more, Mr. Isla.
Nintendo has announced at their press conference this morning that they're still selling 200,000 <strike>Wii</strike> DS systems a week, and 700,000 systems a month. As a comparison, the Xbox 360 sold 520,000 units during the Halo 3 release last year, when it last beat the Wii. So Wiis are still selling like hotcakes, and Nintendo brags that it's not even a holiday season -- they say they're keeping up these sales all year long.

Very impressive. Of course, the games aren't selling quite that well, but in terms of systems, Nintendo just keeps on rolling.

Update: It appears we misheard Reggie. Nintendo is selling 200k DS systems a week, not Wiis. But they are still selling 700k Wiis a month, and both system sales figures are pretty astounding.

This may seem like a raunchy story -- the kind of catfight tale ending with broken nails and torn clothing. We were sort of expecting such scuffles to happen as seven beautiful ladies tussled this past Thursday night over at a Manhattan bar & restaurant called Sutton Place. Alas, we didn't get to see anything underlyingly lewd, but there were certainly enough sweaty bods to drive the male crowd into a frenzy.

Taking part in a Nintendo publicity stunt called "Wii Box in the City," these women tested out their gaming aptitude and fighting skills in a Wii Sports boxing tourney to win a Wii system. The night was wild all night as crowds of supporters cheered and jeered. It came down to Mari (in blue) and Regina (in yellow) for the championship. We caught up with Mari before the big fight; she told us about her Wii experience: "I've played Wii before. It's like a workout." Regina on the other hand had never played the Wii before, while both ladies never had any gaming experience beyond that.

Soon, it was time for the final fight. The two fought bravely, but in the end Regina won with a knock out. "Oh my god, you won!" exclaimed May, Regina's best friend, whose excitement was like that of a kid on Christmas morning. Regina gave her winning prize over to May who continued to laud her bestest friend: "She really killed it! She's the bestest friend ever!" Who knew that gaming and bar fights could bring friends closer together?

Gallery: Wii Box in the City

Seen @ NYC: Women bar fight over Wii originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 14 Jun 2008 16:30:00 EST.
Okay, so I'm immature. Sue me.

From a business standpoint, Wii Fit is an obviously excellent decision. For me, though, I wonder about what kind of effect the successful venture will have on the future of the Wii. Sure, Wii Fit follows Nintendo's goal of extracting money from the wallet of every person on the planet, but think about this: what big titles have we seen from Nintendo since the introduction of Wii Fit? Actually, what have we seen period from Nintendo since the unveiling of Wii Fit? Any big first-party titles planned? Reggie hinted, but we honestly have no idea!

Aside from that, Wii Fit helps Nintendo distance themselves from the model of actually making games for their games console. Wii Fit is selling like some kind of made-up word, proving to the company that they're less relied on to innovate in the games space and instead should put more focus on expanding the market, luring in non-gamers with a barebones fitness experience and other similar products going forward.

This could put a damper on Nintendo dishing out new titles for their longtime fans who actually crave nothing more than installments in the company's key franchises. Sure, we've all played the Super Mario games, but one thing that keeps us coming back, despite the supposed lack of innovation in each installment (as some say) is that each entry does innovate, if only a tad sometimes. We don't keep playing these games out of some nostalgic loyalty to the characters. We play because the games are good.

Finally, people, the thing is way too expensive. You're talking about a $90 bundle, which is more than a third the cost of the console (given that you can find one), for nothing more than a plastic board and an introductory fitness application. We're not talking Brain Age here, where Nintendo is offering a mass market experience at a mass market price. We're talking the kind of price you see on a monthly electric bill.

But this list makes perfect sense to us. The theme is "games you put on the system when you don't want people playing anything except Super Mario Galaxy." Let's take a look, shall we?

Volleyball (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): What if we lived in a world where volleyball was played, instead of by humans, by a race of androids, each of which looked exactly the same? Also, what if it was played with a ball that sometimes sounds like cheese when it is struck and sometimes sounds like metal? Volleyball is a game that dares to ask the tough questions.

Axelay (Super NES, 1 player, 800 Wii Points): This Konami vertically scrolling shooter is the best game this week, but that's a little bit like being the world's tallest midget. If you're absolutely not going to play Super Mario Galaxy, this is the one for you to get.

Blue's Journey (NeoGeo, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points): Here's the game, it never fails, It makes me wanna wag my tail, when it comes I wanna wail ... FAIL! ... OK, so this game isn't actually based on the hit children's series Blue's Clues. But when we tell you that the main character's main weapon is magical leaf, you may just wish it was.
Volleyball, Axelay, Blue's Journey all skulk onto Virtual Console originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 Nov 2007 08:35:00 EST. You've got to be wily to get to the goods before the FatWalleters and the CAGs!

There aren't any Wii games on clearance, but there are plenty of Wii-compatible Gamecube games. We've got a list of all the Gamecube software on sale after the break. Don't expect to find all of it-- most of it has been out of stock for months or years at most stores, and the price changed to clear out remaining copies. But we hope you do find what you're looking for in abundance. And we hope we can make it to Best Buy soon enough to luck into our own copy of Chibi Robo.

[Thanks, ali emamdjomeh!]
