Scheduled to be released later this month in Japan, Wario Land Shake has been largely invisible ... until now. A little too dramatic there? Fair enough, but we're excited is all. While Mario and his fancy blue overalls snubs his mustachioed nose at 2D console games nowadays (even on a handheld, it's 2.5G or bust for Mario), there are still believers in the cause. Yes, dear reader, that's a plural believers; it's not just Castlevania creator Koji Igarashi who still thinks 2D platform gaming is "somewhat alive".

Now you can add Nintendo's rascally un-mascot Wario to that list as well, as evidenced in these videos from his latest console outing. Above you'll find the animated intro (don't worry, your inability to understand Japanese shouldn't interrupt your ability to follow along) and after the break, you'll find the first gameplay footage, in all it's 2D, sprite-based glory.

Our first thought upon seeing this very cool hack was "that's awesome." Our second thought was "do you have to blow on it to make it work?"

BenHeck.com forum member "darkeru" created this inventive new take on a home made NES portable, which manages to squeeze all of the 8-bit dynamo's guts into a 4.1" by 5.5" space ... with a backlit LCD display. We just had a third thought: what happens when you connect it to this portable NES?

[Via Hack a Day]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Video: GoldenEye 007 running on Wii 'Homebrew Channel'

Filed under: Hacks, Nintendo Wii, First Person Shooters

The inventiveness of the homebrew scene never ceases to amaze us. Take for instance the above video. What you see in it is, in fact, GoldenEye 007 for Nintendo 64 running on a Wii with the "Homebrew Channel" installed.

The poster of the video states that he was able to get the game ROM working with the emulator used by the Virtual Console version of Sin & Punishment. He gives no details on how he managed the feat, mentioning only that the game works "for the most part" with occasional slowdown and a broken borked save system.

Hopefully Nintendo will see this video and, rather than simply order it pulled offline, realize just how much people really want a proper Virtual Console release of the game.

[Via Wii Fanboy]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

A lustful look at Limited Edition DS models

Filed under: Culture, Nintendo DS, Galleries

Amazon's gold box deal of the day is Super Smash Bros. Brawl for $25.99, a price that makes not owning the Wii title inexcusable. What are you waiting for? Stop reading this and go buy it.

For the millions that already own the title and are still reading, Amazon's eight lightning deals are all Nintendo-related, with a new deal every two hours starting at 9:00 AM ET. Here are the clues for each (all times ET):

9:00 AM: "Set out on a wild and colorful quest to rescue kids investigate an ominous island." <strike>(Yoshi's Island DS)</strike>

11:00 AM: "Set sail for waters unknown." (Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass)

1:00 PM: "Defy gravity across wild alien terrain."

3:00 PM: "Run, jump, and stomp your way through unimaginable challenges."

5:00 PM: "Race and battle your friends all over the world."

7:00 PM: "Awaken your hero and animal within."

9:00 PM: "Beat Bowser in the race to the crystals."

11:00 PM: "Travel to Sinnoh, complete your Pokédex, and become Champion."

Remember, each deal only lasts two hours (or until supplies are exhausted), so you'll have to act fast. As of this writing, you've only got 90 minutes left to purchase Yoshi's Island DS at 33% off.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

One of the easiest Wii homebrew guides you'll find

Filed under: Culture, Hacks, Nintendo Wii

Sometimes, just sometimes, they're about making the world a better place. Such is the case today, as Nintendo has partnered with Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation to place Wii kiosks featuring such games as Super Mario Galaxy and Wii Sports in hospitals across both the US and Canada to help lift the spirits of seriously ill kids.

The move echoes a similar effort by Microsoft last month, which saw the company link up with NHL vet Pat LaFontaine's foundation Companions in Courage to bring hundreds of Xbox 360 kiosks to children's hospitals in the US. According to a statement, Nintendo plans to manufacture some 1,250 new Fun Center kiosks as part of the partnership, with the charity hoping to have around 500 of these in hospitals by the end of 2008. Nintendo Europe senior marketing director Laurent Fischer has pulled an about-face. His comments last week hurt the feelings of "geeky" Wii owners seeking more space for their WiiWare and Virtual Console downloads. Fischer now tells GamesIndustry.biz that the console maker is "perfectly aware of the issue" and is "working on a solution" that won't involve any add-on hardware (i.e. a hard disk or USB device).

Not being privvy to every last internal working of the Wii, we can only speculate that Nintendo is concocting a method - perhaps via a firmware update - for allowing downloaded games to be played directly from an SD card (much like we'd hoped for when the console first went on sale). There may be a chance this "solution" gets revealed at E3, depending on just how long Nintendo's tech heads (dare we say geeks?) have been working on it.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nintendo promises 'core' gamers will be happy with E3 showing

Marc Franklin, director of public relations at Nintendo, tells GamePro that "core gamers" will be interested in what the company has in store for E3. Although Franklin mentions Mario Super Sluggers (we can sense Europe going into fever pitch!), he gives very little detail on what else the company has planned.

There's been plenty of speculation about what Nintendo may reveal, but Franklin's comments come as Nintendo's more casual oriented Wii Fit storms the sales charts and a certain executive takes a jab at the Nintendo faithful. Franklin concludes that third-party publishers are rolling out more titles as they realize the "Wii is the current platform of choice in this generation." True, but these rollouts don't always equal payoffs. This may seem like a raunchy story -- the kind of catfight tale ending with broken nails and torn clothing. We were sort of expecting such scuffles to happen as seven beautiful ladies tussled this past Thursday night over at a Manhattan bar & restaurant called Sutton Place. Alas, we didn't get to see anything underlyingly lewd, but there were certainly enough sweaty bods to drive the male crowd into a frenzy.

Taking part in a Nintendo publicity stunt called "Wii Box in the City," these women tested out their gaming aptitude and fighting skills in a Wii Sports boxing tourney to win a Wii system. The night was wild all night as crowds of supporters cheered and jeered. It came down to Mari (in blue) and Regina (in yellow) for the championship. We caught up with Mari before the big fight; she told us about her Wii experience: "I've played Wii before. It's like a workout." Regina on the other hand had never played the Wii before, while both ladies never had any gaming experience beyond that.

Soon, it was time for the final fight. The two fought bravely, but in the end Regina won with a knock out. "Oh my god, you won!" exclaimed May, Regina's best friend, whose excitement was like that of a kid on Christmas morning. Regina gave her winning prize over to May who continued to laud her bestest friend: "She really killed it! She's the bestest friend ever!" Who knew that gaming and bar fights could bring friends closer together?

Gallery: Wii Box in the City

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joystiq hands-on: Ninjatown

Designed by artist and former EGM editor Shawn Smith, Ninjatown is so sugary-cute that it should come packaged with flavored DS screen protectors. Its looks are just as sly as ninjas themselves, as we found a (so far) surprisingly deep action-strategy game underneath all the serious eye-fluff.

We got some stylus time with a nice and solid pre-release version of the game yesterday. At first, we caught ourselves giggling a bit as the game's mechanics were explained. After all, it's not every day that you see a special attack where you literally blow away ah-dorable fire demons using the DS microphone. Keep reading for more silliness and our full impressions.

Gallery: Ninjatown

At first glance we were asking: "What the heck is this game?" Based purely on appearance - and maybe because of the cutesy visuals - it would seem to be a sort of lighthearted, top-down action game. In fact, it's most like a real-time strategy game, and tactics are vital.

The basic concept is that Ninjatown - which is, of course, where ninjas live - is being invaded by little nasties called Wee Devils, who've recently been freed from a neighboring volcano. These creeps attack the town in waves; at first they might approach from the east, next from the west, and so on. As the Ol' Master Ninja in his hot air balloon, you command your ninja legions from far above the battle, occasionally stepping in for some hickory stick-on action.

Gameplay revolves around placing ninja huts on parcels of land along a path leading to the center of Ninjatown. The idea is to stop the Wee Devils before they can cross a major bridge; if too many make it over, it's a wrap.

We jumped right into the fray, spending the game's resource - shuriken cookies - to place hand-to-hand and ranged attack ninja where we thought they'd do the most good. One particularly potent tactic we tried was placing snow ninjas near some regular ninja grunts. The former would throw snowballs at enemies, slowing them down while the latter pummeled them.

As we played, we noticed the icon representing Ol' Master Ninja's hickory stick "filling up." It turns out that once it's at least a quarter full, the bearded one can descend from on high and perform special attacks. We tried one that gave us a few seconds within which to tag enemies with our stylus so the ninja master could whack 'em with ol' hickory. The other, mentioned earlier, let us slow the progress of enemies by blowing "wind" in their direction using the DS mic.

The small portion of the game we played was definitely challenging. Publisher SouthPeak expects there to be on order of 30+ scenarios total, encompassing five different gameworld areas. Oh, and we were assured that Ol' Master ninja will have even more silly moves by the time Ninjatown ships this fall. So far, pastel-color us impressed.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nintendo exec. apologizes for 'geeks and otaku' remark

Nintendo Europe's senior marketing director, Laurent Fischer, has apparently apologized for comments made earlier in the week, in which he said that the only people interested in a Wii hard drive would be "geeks and otaku." Fisher tells videogaming247 that he didn't mean to use those terms in a way to cause offense. He regrets any "misunderstanding" that was created by his comments within the community.

What say ye Nintendo legions, forgive Fisher or should his penance be more profound?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nintendo sues Nyko over Kama wireless nunchuk

Nintendo may not make a wireless nunchuk controller, but it'll be gosh darned if someone else is going to do it. Bloomberg reports that Nintendo has sued peripheral manufacturer Nyko over its Kama Nunchuk (pictured above). The Big N claims the design infringes on its trademarks, contending the Kama "appropriates the novel shape, design, overall appearance and even the color and materials used in the Nintendo Nunchuk controller."

Nyko reportedly responded that it didn't "knowingly" violate the company's patent and is looking into the issue. Nintendo wants cash for Nyko infringing on two of its patents and to stop selling the product. The Kama retails for $35 and, given Nintendo's legal war chest, if you're in the market for a wireless nunchuk, now's probably a good time to get it before it's gone. Perhaps this is a sign Nintendo is up to a wireless nunchuk of its own, or would that be something only "geeks and otaku" would be interested in?

[Via Kotaku]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Guitar Hero: On Tour DS bundle dated for June 22

Ahead of Guitar Hero: On Tour's release later this month, Nintendo has confirmed plans to release a new DS bundled with the portable rhythm game. First revealed in May by Activision publishing boss Mike Griffith last month, and later spotted where a kid can be a kid, the bundle is set for release on June 22 alongside the game, rather than a week later as previously reported.

An official price for the package, which will include a new black and silver DS Lite branded with the Guitar Hero logo, has not yet been announced. However, Toys 'R' Us earlier listed the bundle for $179.99 (a listing that has since been removed), giving rockers on the go an idea of how much to scrape together before going on tour.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nintendo job posting hints at Wii USB devices

The two USB ports on the back of the Nintendo Wii don't get a whole lot of love, but that might be changing sometime in the near future. According to PC World, a recent posting on Nintendo's job board calls for a Software/Hardware Tester specializing in creating and executing "a test plan for Wii's USB devices."

We already know that Rock Band on the Wii will utilize a USB hub for its peripherals, but the job posting suggests even more USB devices might be enroute. These could include USB keyboards for future online games, or possibly even an eventual external storage solution (though Nintendo's recent disparaging comments on the matter make this unlikely).

[Via Engadget]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Wii storage for 'geeks and otaku', says Nintendo marketing director

As Nintendo's WiiWare service ramps up with new content added every week, avid Wii users are finding themselves burning through the console's paltry 512MB of internal memory quite quickly. So we find it a bit odd that Nintendo's European Marketing Director not only considers the issue unimportant, but thinks it wise to berate those concerned with it by calling them names.

Speaking to Edge Magazine, NOE Marketing Director Laurent Fischer was surprisingly dismissive of the growing space demands of WiiWare titles. According to him, only "geeks and otaku" want the issue actually addressed. Which just hurts.

If by "geeks and otaku," Mr. Fischer, you mean Nintendo's loyal fanbase who download every game released, then there may some truth in that. But calling them names certainly won't keep those "geeks and otaku" loyal for much longer.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
