Takahashi will unveil his new work during the joint Wild Rumpus/Venus Patrol party on March 27 during GDC in San Francisco.

Wild Rumpus and Venus Patrol both collaborated with Takahashi on the new project, and promise all parties involved will reveal more on the lead-up to GDC at the end of March. Takahashi's last collaboration was with Canabalt creator Adam Saltsman, late last year when the two contributed to the LA Game Space Kickstarter campaign.
Keita Takahashi unveiling new multiplayer game during GDC originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Feb 2013 01:00:00 EST. "The games I was making were not necessarily the best-selling ones," he said. "I realized Namco was, as a business, going down a bit. Also, my colleagues were leaving to do another project. I started to feel like I didn't belong there any more."

On the subject of why his own games didn't sell better: "Maybe because they're not so interesting," Takahashi said. "The reason why is one of the things I'm trying to find out. If I knew, I wouldn't struggle. I don't know." Personally, we hope he never learns the secrets to game industry success (like Unreal Engine and Nolan North). He opined that the constant development of sequels by major publishers is "boring," while also admitting that he understood the business perspective. "I haven't seen anyone trying to make something really new out of the profit they made from those sequels," he said.

Since leaving, Takahashi and his wife have formed a new company, Uvula. He's also working on a playground in Nottingham, the town that hosts GameCity. "I'm going to work on more videogames," Takahashi said, including ideas to present to other publishers. "In general, I want to work on lots of different things that I couldn't work on when I was at Namco."
Keita Takahashi still working on games post-Namco originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 02 Nov 2010 00:05:00 EST. A Namco representative confirmed Takahashi's resignation.

The developer expressed his dissatisfaction in the past with developing for the Japanese publisher, even saying he was disappointed with the support he received for Noby Noby Boy. He's also expressed interest in branching out to other careers, telling the BBC in 2005, "In 10 years time, I am not going to be making games any more." More recently, he got to work on plans for a playground in Nottingham, UK.
No, we're not talking about last year's PS3 release (though one could argue ...); instead, we're talking about today's iPhone release.

Let's examine the evidence: The trailer, included after the break, eschews traditional marketing tactics in favor of puppets and nonsensical dialogue. The screenshots depict a series of seemingly unrelated "functions" (minigames?) including a camera app, a map app, a stretchable Boy app, and others. And our final piece of evidence, Noby Noby Boy is filed under "Productivity" in the App Store and, regardless of its status as a "game" we're almost certain it's not going to make us more productive at anything, short of unlocking its mysteries.

While we think calling it a "game" may be a bit of a stretch, as a toy, it's now got a better price on a more appropriate platform.
Namco Bandai did not do that for the iPhone Noby Noby Boy game. Instead, creator Keita Takahashi put on a puppet show in a conference room.

Using adorable handmade puppets, Takahashi provided the clearest look yet at the mobile version, including the stretchable Boy, several minigames and a camera app in which ... some cartoon guy hangs onto your photo.

Resident Evil 5
I've long been a fan of the Resident Evil series, and while the campaign here has problems and should never be played solo, the Mercenaries mode is what kept me coming back. Those action-packed levels spent trying to survive while running low on ammo and health were some of my most chaotic, yet highly enjoyable, experiences of 2009.
Continue reading Best of the Rest: Dave's Picks of 2009

Best of the Rest: Dave's Picks of 2009 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 01 Jan 2010 17:15:00 EST. They said it couldn't be done -- and for good reason, considering how difficult it must be for a creature to stretch its own body to a length of 576,682,810 miles. However, thanks to a little help from Namco Bandai, Noby Noby Boy's community-driven "Girl" has managed to extend her torso from Earth to Jupiter, unlocking a new playable planet for all of the game's inhabitants.
Make sure you check out the video after the jump to get a sense of what eating your own butt whilst aimlessly traversing a gas giant feels like. We can't believe we just had a reason to write that sentence. Was Noby Noby Boy misunderstood by the gaming masses? Creator Keita Takahashi seems to think so, as he believes the game's limited resources didn't fully realize his vision. "Ultimately, with Noby Noby Boy, I wanted to break the barriers between toy and game," Takahashi explained to Develop. "But for me personally, a bit more could have been done to the game. I'm not completely satisfied with the game, in terms of quality, due to the restrictions on budgets."

Takahashi, famous for his work on the original Katamari Damacy, has been surprisingly forthcoming on Noby's budget (or lack thereof). Had Takahashi been given additional resources he believes the game would have reached a much larger audience. "I won't go in to what I wanted to add to the game, because that's a really long list of things, but as an overall assessment, I think the game could have been much more detailed and easier for everyone to understand."

It appears Noby's shortcomings won't stop Takahashi from working on an even crazier design. Already, he's thinking of a new project, one that "is even harder to explain than Noby Noby Boy." Fans of Takahashi's works wouldn't want it any other way -- but we wonder if publisher Namco Bandai will embrace an even more experimental game.
Keita Takahashi 'not completely satisfied' with Noby Noby Boy, blames budget originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 Oct 2009 22:30:00 EST. As you may expect from a Keita Takahashi product, we can't really figure anything out about it based on this one screen, except that it's got BOY in it, and there's a display at the top of BOY's length. The game is currently 60% done, and has no announced release date yet.

People still playing the PS3 game may not even care what the iPhone version is, as long as it helps them add all-important centimeters to GIRL. Also, the fact that it "might be like free" will no doubt influence people to pick it up regardless of whatever actually happens. At the very least, it already looks neat. Of course, this screen could be a trick, like this early trailer for the PS3 game.
First look at Noby Noby Boy stuffed into an iPhone originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 11 Sep 2009 12:50:00 EST. This is one of those posts that's all about perception. If we were to tell you that Noby Noby Boy creator Keita Takahashi said the game had sold 100,000 units to date, for example, you might think "Oh, that's a small number, considering the 24 million-unit size of the PS3 install base."

You might say that. But then we'd turn right around and remind you: That means that there are 100,000 people on this beautiful planet who said "Oh, a game about a four-legged worm-like thing that eats things and poops as he collaborates with other worm-like things on interplanetary travel? Fans of Noby Noby Boy have finally arrived at the next destination in their voyage across outer space, having only spent three months stretching to get there. Three months may sound like a long time to get to the next level of any game, but for anyone familiar with the oddity known as Noby Noby Boy, this was way (and we mean way) ahead of schedule.

When the mathematicians amongst the game's fans first brought out the calculators, it was determined that it would actually take several years before Mars would be reached. Apparently, Namco multiplied player's submitted lengths by 765, speeding up the process. Essentially, it cheated, though undeniably in a good way.

This, however, raises a good point: the next few planets are going to have an even greater distance between them. Does this mean we're going to see more multipliers? Can we expect to see a "double XP weekend," sort of deal? Or should Namco rearrange its measuring system or modify the gameplay?
Noby Noby Boy cheated to reach Mars originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 May 2009 20:15:00 EST. The Noby Noby Boy website has a lot of DIY crafts, but the Noby sushi roll looks nommy and makes us hungry. Siliconera took note of the culinary concoction and we immediately put our interns to work making them -- then we realized we didn't have interns and went to the kitchen to learn it ourselves. Funny (sad) thing is our Japanese is tragic and we don't exactly recognize all the ingredients (image after the break), so please feel free to leave instructions in the comments below.

Noby Noby Sushi originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 May 2009 12:05:00 EST. Stop the presses! Noby Noby Boy patch 1.1 is now live and it gives you the all-important ability to change the volume of your farts. We thought you'd like to know.

Oh, but that's not all. The update will also give you access to a number of new musical options, 29 in all. Want to play with the sounds of the ocarina? Takahashi's disregard for video game convention and complete openness always make for an entertaining read. There are a few items of note that are worth pulling out, which are worthwhile even out of the context of "weird stuff Keita Takahashi said."

For example, he reveals that Trophies won't be included in the new multiplayer update. "As this a free update, we can't add any." He also classifies the upcoming iPhone version of Noby Noby Boy as "bait:"

"We used too much time and money to develop Noby Noby Boy, and there won't be any major updates in the future. However, I am trying to use the iPhone version in order to get more money from our top executives in order to keep updating the PS3 version."

He hopes that the iPhone and PS3 versions will help GIRL grow faster, but Takahashi doesn't think he made her progress too slow. He told Eurogamer, "I don't think it is right to put an ending just for the sake of it. I believe that it is alright to create a stupid and irresponsible game, I really do."
Takahashi: Noby Noby iPhone is 'bait' for increased PS3 budget originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 28 Apr 2009 13:00:00 EST. Nope, there's still more to come. The upcoming multiplayer patch for the PSN sandbox "toy" will allow players to control their own stretchy BOYs. However, if one BOY eats another, you'll get a combined BOY where one player controls the head and the other controls the poo-poo side. The PlayStation Blog mentions four-player support, but Takahashi admits that the experience may be quite "chaotic." We're not sure how four-player support will be implemented, but we're certain Takahashi's team will figure it out ... even without the help of drugs.
Eat your friend's butt in Noby Noby Boy multiplayer mode originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 24 Apr 2009 11:25:00 EST. A photo says a thousand words, right? We think this Noby Noby Boy sneaker (sent to Kotaku) speaks for itself, turning the now-iconic BOY into a very lengthy shoelace. The concept is easy to understand, and the execution is simple and stylish. It's a reader creation, though, so don't expect to see this at a store near you.
Noby Noby sneakers feature long, long laces originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 06 Apr 2009 08:50:00 EST. Although it's hard to believe that the ideas for Katamari Damacy and Noby Noby Boy weren't birthed from some serious drug use, Keita Takahashi stated at GDC that he's completely straight-edge when it comes to partaking in the chemical vices of man. Speaking at GDC, Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi revealed that the PSN title Noby Noby Boy was developed on the Xbox 360. As to why it was then released exclusively on the PSN, Takahashi said that he dislikes seeing so many people staring down at handheld games on the subway. He joked, "Maybe it's not such a good thing if a game sells a lot of copies. So we put it on the PS3 as a download only title so it wouldn't sell as many." On a more serious note, Takahashi said that he likes that the analogue sticks on the PS3 controller are aligned horizontally, as opposed to the asymmetrical setup on the Xbox 360 controller. Feel free to consult his diagram above if you're confused.

Don't get your hopes up just yet, 360 owners, Takahashi didn't drop any hints that Noby Noby Boy would be twisting its way to 360. In fact, he pretty much crushed any hopes it might, saying, "Well, this game is not being sold well, so I can't support Xbox at all."
GDC09: Takahashi says Noby Noby Boy was developed on 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 Mar 2009 18:25:00 EST. Noby Noby Boy primarily functions as a strange single-player online PSN title; however, that might change soon. The game's official website suggests that an update bringing an offline 4-way multiplayer mode is on its way, as well as some new music ... featuring maracas. This could be that "big update" that was promised previously. Hopefully, offline play won't be too distracting, as we've still got a long way to go before unlocking Mars.

[Via Eurogamer]
Noby Noby Boy might get offline multiplayer originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Mar 2009 11:45:00 EST. After four days and a combined length of nearly 400 million meters, Noby Noby Boy's GIRL has finally reached the moon. This means that a new level has been unlocked for everyone (yes, everyone) who owns the quirky PSN title. Bizarre as it is, the new moon level features space-fish and space-cows to gobble up; it also has flying saucers.

This is the first unlockable world for Noby Noby Boy and there will be more to come. So what's the next stop for GIRL, our lovable pink spaceworm? Well, she goes off to stretch where no GIRL has stretched before: Mars. How many days do you think it will take this time?

[Thanks Johan K.!]

Noby Noby Girl hits moon, unlocks new level for all originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Feb 2009 17:30:00 EST. Your guess is as good as ours as to how today's major PSN release, Noby Noby Boy plays. Heck, even it's creator -- Katamari Damacy's Keita Takahashi -- doesn't know why he made it. But, given its pedigree and $4.99 pricetag, we're going for it. Will you join us? (The more the merrier, as new stages are unlocked via cumulative global play -- crazy!).

Today's update also brings PopCap's Zuma to PS3 (it's no Peggle, but what is ... except, well, Peggle), along with the much-anticipated Burnout Paradise Legendary Cars Collection, WipEout trimmings (plus costumes) for LittleBigPlanet and a playable demo of Loco Roco 2 for PSP, among various other offerings.

For $5, even those that are hesitant may want to pick up this rather unique (and experimental) game from the creator of Katamari Damacy. Should the quirky game find an audience, Namco Bandai will allow Keita Takahashi to continue developing the world he's created. "I want many people to play the game. Please allow me to keep updating the game!"

The first planned DLC should arrive approximately two months after the game's release. What it will entail, we're not exactly sure. Monday is totally the new Sunday. Okay, we're lying. Valentine's Day got the best of this blogger, and now this feature comes in one day late. (But hey, it's a holiday today, here in the States.) We start this feature with a bloody, "homicide" themed modded PS3 from Jerry Thampan. Check out more pics here. [Thanks, Roland!]
How about you watch the video and YOU tell us what it's about?

The confusion that surrounds Noby Noby Boy is part of its charm. In fact, it's so bizarre that even the creator doesn't know why he made it. He states that some people may not even consider it to be a game at all: "By making an undefined and ambitious game, I want the player's reaction to be something like, 'I don't know why, but it's somehow interesting. I can't stop playing.' In that way, I would feel I have succeeded at creating what I wanted, that is, creating something that's not easily describable."

Considering it's only $5, we're willing to take part in Takahashi's obviously-insane experiment.

Noby Noby Boy creator doesn't know why he made the game (also, new trailer) originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Feb 2009 19:00:00 EST. PSN exclusive Noby Noby Boy is ready to wrap itself around your wallet and suck out $5 on February 19. Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi helmed this title -- and even after watching videos, we still have nary a clue about what's going on in it.

Even stranger than the gameplay of Noby Noby Boy is the meta-game going on among all the players. Namco Bandai explains that "players collaborate to unlock new game stages." As players stretch "Boy" in their individual games, an entity known as "Girl" is growing according to the combined length of all the players in the world. As Girl reaches certain milestones, those stages will be unlocked for everyone around the world. It's not clear if that means they'll be available as part of the game or as DLC.
Before delving into some of February's bigger, disc-based games like Killzone 2 and Street Fighter IV, Namco Bandai invites you into the zany world of Noby Noby Boy. It's the game where -- seemingly -- your imagination and insatiable hunger for eating things can take you to the moon -- literally. It will also allow you to record whatever strangeness you can procure which can then later be posted and viewed on YouTube.

Gamers in Europe can expect this spiritual successor to the Katamari series to hit the PS Store on February 19. It'll go on sale for a measly €3.99. While pricing for the UK was not mentioned in the latest press release, a quick look at previous pricing on PSN suggests to look forward to putting away £2.49. With recent news of a delay in Japan to coincide with the Feb. 19 release, we're thinking that North Americans should expect to see the game appear on that day too.

Update: We were right. Namco Bandai has announced a US release of Noby Noby Boy for Feb. 19th. It will be available for $4.99.

Noby Noby Boy on PlayStation Network February 19 [Update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Jan 2009 09:45:00 EST. We're very happy for all those who understand what's going on in the three Noby Noby Boy gameplay videos we've placed after the break. We'll just smile and nod politely as you write in the comments about the innovative mechanics and explain how the game is a satire of 17th century French society.

In fairness, Keita Takahashi took a simple idea and made it work before with Katamari Damacy, so we'll just have to wait for more videos to make sense of what we're looking at. You may have been left fascinated yet confused after reading the information blowout regarding Noby Noby Boy the other day. Sometimes it's just easier to show than tell, and this game's a pretty good example of that. Come see BOY stretch and eat everything he comes across in the latest trailer (after the break) from GameVideos. Noby Noby Boy looks quite fun, but is it as fun and innovative as Katamari Damacy was back in the day? We'll find out soon enough as the game releases next month in Japan with a worldwide release to follow closely.

[via Kotaku]
Continue reading Noby Noby Boy trailer clears things up

Noby Noby Boy trailer clears things up originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 17 Dec 2008 07:00:00 EST. Namco Bandai has sent us a delightfully colorful press release, announcing its intentions to release Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi's latest game, Noby Noby Boy, on the PlayStation Network sometime in "early 2009." As an eager and gluttonous worm ... thing, it's your objective in Noby Noby Boy to devour objects throughout the world and stretch your body to unprecedented lengths. It seems your growing gut can interact with other objects, so you'd best beware of becoming entangled in someone's house. Oh, the embarrassment!

Though no exact price nor launch date has been given for the US, Japan is set to receive the stretchy smiler on January 29th for ¥800 ($8.78).
The new game from the creator of Katamari Damacy, Keita Takahashi, is so close to release. In fact it's only a month and a half away from its Japanese PS Store debut on January 29. After a year-long silence for Noby Noby Boy, we're finally actually learning something substantial about the title other than it being obviously colorful and strange.

The basic controls utilizes the PS3's dual analog sticks to bend and twist the worm-like character you control who's called BOY. The aim seems to revolve around making reports to another character named GIRL. Making better reports causes her to stretch longer allowing her to reach (unlock) new stages such as the Moon, Mars or even Jupiter. As noted by 1UP who went hands-on with the title, it's a rather bizarre explanation to listen to but that's what you can expect. "Noby Noby Boy has stages, characters, and objects to interact with, but it's up to the player to decide how to have fun with them, resulting in something closer to a literal "sandbox" than the kind of game that word usually describes ... it's less of a game, and more of a playground."

Rather interesting, no? It might be even more so knowing that Japan might not be the only ones getting the title this January. 1UP also reports in their hands-on that Namco is planning on releasing the game simultaneously worldwide. Hopefully we'll also get that sweet-spot pricing of ¥800 ($8.78). One last thing, make sure to check out the new images we've been given in our gallery below.

Source 1 - Famitsu
Source 2 - 1UP

Noby Noby Boy release date, price & details revealed originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 15 Dec 2008 07:00:00 EST. Noby Noby Boy (notice the subtle spelling change?) was at the Tokyo Game Show last week via an all-new trailer (posted after the break); however, we still weren't given a clear idea on what the game was all about. In fact, the teaser trailer only made things seem slightly more confusing than previously. Exactly what is Katamari creator Keita Takahashi doing with this PS3 exclusive? We've been wondering that for an entire year now.

While the trailer didn't give us much to work with, we still were able to get an NNB news bite to surface elsewhere. We refer to Sony's TGS press website listing Takahashi's new title as a downloadable PSN title. Takahashi's new IP sure does look interesting, but we're wondering why is it taking the game so long to actually reveal itself.

Continue reading Noby Noby Boy is a PSN title

Noby Noby Boy is a PSN title originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Oct 2008 19:30:00 EST.
