Bethesda Softworks has released seven of its game soundtracks to the mom and pop record shop known as "iTunes."

The Elder Scrolls soundtracks, all composed by Jeremy Soule, include Morrowind and Oblivion for $9.99 each, while Skyrim asks an imperial premium at $15.99.

Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, both by Inon Zur, are $11.99 apiece. Daniel Licht's soundtrack for Dishonored and Rod Abernethy's RAGE are $9.99 each.

If you're trying to use the Elder Scrolls tracks in a surreal experience, try playing them on your iPod while walking around a city. "We will continue to work to try to change that, but at present it is still not approved," he said. "We would like to release a PS3 version a well."

Seeing as Fallout 3 launched in 2008 and Oblivion in 2006, it's about time they settled down, found a partner and relinquished their previous $60 lifestyle. Of course the age gap may upset a few people since two years is, like, 80 years in video game time, but they'll get over it. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion will apparently receive a "5th Anniversary Edition" on June 28. First spotted by Nitrobeard on Overstock.com, the $30 bundle also appears on Amazon.com with assets pending for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

The package will allegedly include The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game Of The Year Edition, collector's edition content like a map and DVD extras, along with a $10 coupon for Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. We've contacted Bethesda for confirmation of the bundle details.
In what is perhaps the best news about The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim so far, Bethesda confirmed via a tweet that the game's engine is "brand new ... and it's spectacular!"

That's meaningless info to most, but for those of us who follow games a little too closely, "brand new engine" is more significantly "not Gamebryo," the troubled, notoriously glitchy skeleton inside Bethesda products like Fallout 3 and a few other titles, including the recent Epic Mickey. Bethesda community man Nick Breckon later tweeted that the new engine was built internally by the company.

Will it still feel like a Bethesda game if faces don't occasionally turn inside out, dislodge from their bodies and fly around the room? We'll find out when Skyrim launches on Xbox 360, PC and PS3 on November 11.

Bethesda's suite of RPGs have been discounted on Steam -- specifically, its Game of the Year offerings. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind gets the most drastic cut at 75% off, down to $5, while Fallout 3 has been discounted by 50% to $25. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion straddles the middle with a discount of 66%, down to $8.50.

As far as sheer hours-to-dollars ratio, you're probably looking at something like eleventy kajillion.

Though Bethesda's bigwigs have gone back and forth on the existence of another installment in the Elder Scrolls franchise, an excerpt from online book retailer Waterstone's product listing for Elder Scrolls: The Infernal City seems fairly certain of the series' continuance. The listing -- which was recently edited to remove the following savory quote -- mentions that the novel takes place 45 years after Oblivion, adding that "it partly bridges the gap for the next game, which is set 200 years after the Oblivion crisis."

As promising as this sounds, we find a major flaw with this claim -- see, we've already clocked over 200 years of playtime into Oblivion (and still haven't beaten it!), meaning we're technically playing the sequel right now. We've contacted Bethesda to ask them about the book listing, and to see if 200 years of technological progress will bring about unimaginable advances in equestrian fortification.
Elder Scrolls novel listing mentions next game, set 200 years after Oblivion originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 24 Oct 2009 22:00:00 EST. Bethesda's Todd Howard delivered a heart-crushing blow to fans of Oblivion (and the Elder Scrolls series as a whole) during a recent speech at QuakeCon 2009. When pressed about the company's next big project, Howard told the audience not to expect "Elder Scrolls V" any time soon. Amidst wails of anguish from the Tamriel enthusiasts in attendance, Howard followed that statement with a minor concession -- he joked that "there's always a chance" for an Elder Scrolls MMO.
Flash forward to this morning, when stalwart internet lookyloo Supererogatory noticed a startling trend. A number of intriguingly named web domains use Zenimax's nameserver as their host -- domains such as ElderScrollsOnline.com, ElderScrollsMMO.com, TheElderScrollsMMOG.net, etc. This is so very far from a confirmation of the project -- but definitely food for thought following Howard's QuakeCon remarks.
Elder Scrolls V not in the works, there's a 'chance' for Elder Scrolls MMO originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 15 Aug 2009 11:00:00 EST. We've got the full list of games posted after the break -- highlights include Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and ... Viva Piñata. What? We love ambulatory piñatas! Deal with it.
Well, the Bioshock and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion bundle just got a lot less interesting. We put in word to Bethesda's Pete Hines asking which version of Oblivion would be included in the bundle, and he got back to us with this most sad news: It's the original game. That means it's not the Game of the Year edition including Shivering Isles, the lengthy expansion featuring the hilarious Daedric Prince of Madness, Sheogorath.
Oblivion, Bioshock bundle doesn't feature Game of the Year edition originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 18 Jun 2009 18:58:00 EST. Update: Well, folks, Bethesda has confirmed our fears: The Oblivion included is not the Game of the Year edition. It's the original Oblivion release.

Bethesda, proprietor of large, navigable worlds both post-apocalyptic and, uh, pre-apocalyptic, has teamed up with 2K Games to offer a gaming bundle not seen since the days of the original Xbox, when you could get Jet Set Radio and Sega GT together in one convenient package. 2K and Bethesda are bundling Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Bioshock together for Xbox 360 and Windows PC, for $39.99 and $29.99, respectively, starting July 7.

The press release was unclear on which version of Oblivion this is (Game of the Year edition?), so we've sent word for a comment regarding that.
Open world meets underwater in new Oblivion, Bioshock bundle [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 17 Jun 2009 15:35:00 EST. Steam users, know that Bethesda has just unloaded three of its top titles onto the service. Starting today, users can download The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Game of the Year edition). Adding further incentive is a 20% discount on these titles, valid this week only.

Odds are you played both Elder Scrolls games already, but if you've yet to try the under-appreciated Call of Cthulhu, then we suggest you pounce on this. The Elder Scrolls series is known for its large amount of in-game reading material. Oblivion and Morrowind both had dozens of books to read through when you weren't busy playing the games, a lot of which were based on the rich history and mythology of the Elder Scrolls universe. Bethesda has just announced that, starting this fall, you'll be able to find books based on the Elder Scrolls games in the real world, too.

These books are to be written by New York Times bestselling author Greg Keyes, who authored the Age of Unreason Tetrology and three Star Wars books in the New Jedi Order series. The first of the two Elder Scrolls book, The Infernal City, takes place after the events of Oblivion, during a time when a mysterious floating city is causing Tamriel's residents to rise again as undead. You know, that old chestnut.
Greg Keyes to pen official Elder Scrolls novels originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Apr 2009 17:30:00 EST. As of this week, it's been three years since the entire internet exploded with the news that purely decorative horse armor would cost 200 MS points ($2.50) to add to your copy of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. To celebrate that happy occasion, you'll be able to buy all of Oblivion's fine Xbox 360 DLC for half of its normal price during this week. All the DLC that is ... except horse armor.

No, if you want horse armor, you're going to have to pay double the normal price. Seriously. And speaking as a group of guys who like to look like they've got a little fantasy cheddar in the bank when they roll into a new village, let us tell you: Worth every penny.

[Update: Just to clarify, this isn't a joke. Well, it's not our joke. Bethesda promised us that this was totally true.]
Oblivion DLC gets half off, except horse armor ... which is doubled originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 Apr 2009 10:20:00 EST. While Oblivion and Fallout 3 offer an MMORPG experience without all of the lumbering masses, Bethesda father figure Zenimax Media continues to eye the real MMO market. The company is looking for new talent to help its cause, announcing that it has entered into a second hiring phase at its MMO-focused ZeniMax Online Studios.

Currently ZeniMax's online branch employs a team of 60, with former Gamecock and BradyGames exec Steve Escalante and Blizzard support guru Rich Barham making up the latest additions to the studio's roster. Studio president Matt Firor teases that devs of all disciplines looking to help "create the next great MMOG" should apply within. No specific project has been announced, but in this shrinking economy any sign of positive growth is cause for celebration.
Bethesda parent company looking for MMO talent originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Mar 2009 08:25:00 EST. Some of us had only just recovered from turning back the Daedric scourge in Tamriel before Bethesda took it upon itself to obliterate the countryside altogether in Fallout 3. Destruction of this magnitude takes planning, and speaking during last week's DICE summit in Las Vegas studio director Todd Howard laid out Bethesda's three simple rules for "making excellent games."

According to MTV Multiplayer, Howard's vision for great game design can be distilled down into the following principles: 1) A dev's ability to leave even their favorite ideas on the cutting room floor, 2) the capability to think smaller and keep things simple and 3) being able to define a project "by the experience you want people to have," rather than just a laundry list of features.

During his time on stage, the outspoken director also took issue with the importance of the Wii's overwhelming dominance of the console market, with Gamasutra reporting that Howard said "if install base really mattered, we'd all make board games, because there are a lot of tables." True, but we'd still be hard pressed to trade away our railway rifle and head shots for a pricey monopoly built on the smoldering ruins of Boardwalk and Park Place.

Source -- The Following Colorful Wisdom Is From Todd Howard
Source -- Bethesda's Howard On Supreme Playability
DICE 2009: Todd Howard on Bethesda's 3 rules of game development originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 22 Feb 2009 10:00:00 EST. In the closest thing you'll find to a Megaton announcement at New York Comic Con, Fallout 3 executive producer Todd Howard has confirmed during a panel at the show that Bethesda is now working on an iPhone game. News of this comes from Newsweek corespondent N'Gai Croal's twitter feed (we heard it, too -- sitting in the audience!) and includes no other details. That's because there weren't any.

Whether the game is Fallout-related, Oblivion-related or something completely new, we're intrigued to find out. Who knows, maybe it's that ill-fated Oblivion PSP title that never made it to market. Check back later for our full report on the Todd Howard and Ken Levine panel at Comic Con.
NYCC 09: Bethesda developing iPhone title originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 06 Feb 2009 18:45:00 EST. Considering that the term "Horse Armor" has become a common idiom when referring to unnecessary, costly DLC, we find it somewhat surprising that people are still purchasing Oblivion's equestrian plate mail. However, a recent Bethesda Blog post which ranked Oblivion's available add-ons by their total sales figures claimed, "even Horse Armor continues to sell daily." While pondering the type of folks who would drop two-and-a-half American dollars to trick out their virtual ponies, check out how the rest of the DLC measured up:

Not content with just the details Bethesda was willing to part with about the upcoming Fallout 3 DLC, MTV's Stephen Totilo grabbed his brass knuckles, donned his fedora with the "Press" card tucked under the band and pounded on the e-door of PR man Pete Hines until he gave up some answers.

In terms of scope, it looks like you'll want to (sadly) think smaller than Oblivion's massive Shivering Isles and more along the lines of Knights of the Nine, which ran $9.99. Also, it looks like you'll access the new stuff in-game rather than through a menu (à la Oblivion.)

That's pretty much all Totilo managed to get out of Hines, even though he tuned the poor guy up pretty good. Now that "Oblivion with guns" is done, it's time for Bethesda to make another "Fallout with swords." The developer's publishing executive, Paul Oughton, indicated to GI.biz that the company could "potentially" have the next Elder Scrolls title ready in 2010.

Oughton also stated Bethesda currently doesn't have any plans to release its titles on Wii. He acknowledges that Nintendo has opened up a market, but the publisher plans to stick with the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. An Oblivion or Fallout 3 port for Wii is still theoretically possible, it just doesn't sound like Bethesda would be the one doing it.
Bethesda: Elder Scrolls 'potentially' returning in 2010 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 29 Oct 2008 17:15:00 EST. They commented that a new Elder Scrolls game could be on schedule to release in 2010, for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, but not on the Wii. "At the moment we're not that interested in the Wii," said Paul Oughton, publishing executive for Bethesda. Despite Nintendo's huge base, Bethesda doesn't see success much longer for those working with the Wii and DS.

"We've seen games selling in the past 18 months that we never thought we'd see," Oughton said, further adding that he "wouldn't have thought that pet games and cooking games would have a viable market five years ago." But, we're getting to a breaking point, he claims. "Nintendo bought new products in with vast amounts of marketing money to launch these into the minds of the consumer and made a market for them. Every other publisher then very quickly developed DS and Wii products and we're getting to saturation now."

Sure, that's all well and good, and we appreciate you offering your opinions, but this doesn't do anything to explain why a new Elder Scrolls game isn't headed to Wii. If Bethesda could make the game for PSP (they never finished, but they had to think the tech was up to spec to even begin undertaking such a project), why not for Wii? Do you not think there's a market for your games on the console, Bethesda?
New Elder Scrolls in 2010 a possibility, but won't come to Wii originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 29 Oct 2008 14:30:00 EST. As an Oblivion fan, I was ready for Fallout 3 to completely blow me out of the irradiated water. I had the shiny "Game of the Year" trophy all polished and ready, and all I was waiting for was a couple of hours of play time before I made the trip to the engravers.

Before I talk about those hours though, let me tell you fellow Oblivion fans what you need to hear: All the good stuff is here. There's still a giant world to explore, with tons of diversions if you don't mind chasing them down. It may not be as pretty as Tamriel, but it's a lot more dense, teeming with treasures to dig up and people to meet/kill.

You still have countless different ways to customize your character, who could be anything from an evil medical genius who's got a way with rocket launchers to an angelic scientist that can decapitate a mutant with a single hammer swing.

Those battles feel surprisingly satisfying too, thanks to the addition of Fallout's V.A.T.S. system which lets you stop time and to choose which body parts to target, usually resulting in a decapitation or ... de-arm-itation. Each shot uses a number of action points, and you have to wait for them to refill before you can get any more aiming assistance. It works so well that I hope something similar is implemented in the next Elder Scrolls title.

Gallery: Fallout 3

Continue reading Joystiq review: Fallout 3

Joystiq review: Fallout 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 28 Oct 2008 12:55:00 EST. In an interview today (we'll have more from this later), Fallout 3 executive producer Todd Howard let us in on a little Bethesda family tradition. After the release of its games, the team holds a speed run contest to see who can get through the title the fastest (without cheating, of course). For Oblivion, Howard lost to the QA lead, who managed to best the Elder Scrolls RPG in 1 hour and 15 minutes.

"But this time [with Fallout 3]," he said, "the pie will be mine."
Overheard@E3: 'The pie will be mine' originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 21:45:00 EST. While EW took everything from movies to tech to task, writers Geoff Keighley, Wook Kim and Gary Eng Walk clawed through the last 25 years of gaming to list the industry's most important releases. Two Xbox-exclusive titles landed in the top 25 of the 50 title list, at number 11 the classic 2001 Xbox launch title Halo: Combat Evolved from Bungie and ranking in at number 20 was Epic's Gears of War.

Other strong Xbox released titles on the list included Grand Theft Auto IV (#9), BioShock (#28), Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (#30), Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (#38), Psychonauts (#43), Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (#45), Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (#47) and Madden NFL 2005 (#50).

What are the most important titles in your gaming life and how do you think this list stacks up as a collection of gaming's new classics in the last 25 years? The full 50 title listing can be found after the jump.
Continue reading Entertainment Weekly lists the classic games from the last 25 years

Entertainment Weekly lists the classic games from the last 25 years originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 22 Jun 2008 14:30:00 EST. When you play a lot of video games as we do, they can tend to feel a little same-y after a while. But Majestic Studios may just have just pushed past Homageville and straight into Lawsuitburg with Limbo of the Lost, which appears to have lifted many of its background graphics directly from Bethesda's Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. No, it's not in a "Hey, this game looks like Oblivion" way. It's more like "Hey, why are you seizing my copy of the game as evidence?" GamePlasma has the image above and many, many more examples.

What's nuttier is that this game has actually been around for a while. It was originally released in Asia way back in November of 2007, though it's just now getting a North American release. It's criminal, but it's also kind of inspiring. Apparently, if you dream of making games, all you have to do is find another game, and then make up a guy to put in that game and then sell it. If we weren't so busy liquidating our stock in Majestic Studios we'd be slow clapping.

(Oh, and just so you know, Bethesda tells us they don't have a comment and Majestic's email address doesn't work..)

Update: No one is safe from Limbo! It seems the game also stole an environment from Eidos' Thief: Deadly Shadows.

Update 2: Just heard back from U.S. publisher Tri Synergy who tells us that the similarity between the two is "striking" but "We're just as shocked as anybody else and we've put a line in to Majestic. We had no idea that any of this had been in the game and things would have been different had we known." They're still exploring it though, so we hope we'll hear more soon.

[Thanks Michael]
Yoink!
To refill his rage this week, Zero Punctuation's Yahtzee took a trip back to the simpler time of 2006 and grabbed a copy of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion off the new release shelf. Being a Western RPG, instead of a JRPG, the game actually stood a small chance of stealing Yahtzee's artificial heart. Of course, the problems with the voice acting and immersion that plagued the game when it first released haven't aged well. Yahtzee obviously takes the opportunity to jam a lead pipe into Oblivion and hoover out every last bit of hate he can.

Find this week's NSFW ZP review of the game where Patrick Stewart plays the emperor for about 10 minutes after the break.

Mandatory game installs have become an expected burden for PlayStation 3 owners, a tax paid in time for the pleasure of playing games on Sony's latest console. And while the time spent watching the bar creep across the screen has ranged from modest to absurd, we're still not accustomed with having to wait at all. It's a sentiment echoed by the developers at Bethesda, as the company recently let slip that the PS3 version of its radioactive RPG Fallout 3 will not include any upfront installation at all.

"The answer to that is no, there isn't," Bethesda marketing guru Pete Hines recently told Joystiq concerning Fallout 3 on the PS3. "That doesn't mean we don't use the hard drive, just that it does it in the background as opposed to a large, upfront install." As far as how much hard drive space the game will require, the exec wouldn't say exactly. Hines did mention that the RPG will require "a similar amount" of HD space as Oblivion, making us expect to fill up the PS3's juicy interior with about 4-5 gigs of atom-splitting data when the game ships this fall.
Fallout 3 just says no to mandatory install on PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 May 2008 14:25:00 EST. The interviewee (who, quite oddly, is never named in the article) suggests that it was the comparison between the developer's open-ended fantasy RPG and Bethesda's open-ended fantasy RPG, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, that did the scores in. "I can't say for sure, but I suspect that it was unfairly compared to Oblivion," says the spokesperson. "It's understandable since Elder Scrolls was so good it basically set the standard."

Ah, that would explain why Worth Playing labeled Two Worlds a "sub-par RPG with a sub-par storyline, sub-par gameplay, sub-par sounds, and very sub-par multiplayer." Reality Pump further notes that one of the game's major failings was being stuffed with ideas. "With the original idea, we were all so excited to be working on an RPG, that we tried to fit in every idea we had, even the ones that came late in the process. Ultimately, this hurt the end product in that it had parts that were underdeveloped."

Will the expansion-turned-sequel, Two Worlds: The Temptation be better? "It's better in every aspect, and we know that many reading this have their doubts. All I can say is give us a chance to prove it." Fair enough -- as long as you don't mind us comparing it to Oblivion.
Two Worlds 'unfairly compared to Oblivion' by reviewers originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Apr 2008 17:28:00 EST. Did you know that Oblivion and Fallout 3 dev Bethesda had a sibling named Vir2L Studios? Known primarily for releasing games for cellular phones, the ZeniMax-owned outfit has announced plans to bring a pair of titles to the Nintendo DS this summer. However, while this would have been great news had the company decided to bring its Elder Scrolls Travels mobile titles to the handheld, life has taught us that life is seldom that generous.

Vir2L will instead release touchable versions of its AMF Bowling and Ducati motorcycle racing series on the DS. Both AMF Bowling Pinbusters! and Ducati Moto promise multiple characters and Wi-Fi connectivity, and will each carry a budget price of $19.99. Still, our hope is that Vir2L is simply testing the waters with these titles, and we may someday be able to save Oblivion's Tamriel, stylus in hand.
Bethesda sister developer bringing mobile sports pair to DS originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 09 Apr 2008 15:30:00 EST. It's said that bigger is not necessarily better, and it's a mantra that Oblivion dev Bethesda seems to have subscribed to for their next sprawling adventure, Fallout 3. In a massive interview with Gameplayer, Bethesda spokesperson Pete Hines said that, though no one had walked Fallout 3's post-apocolyptic D.C. from end to end, it's probably 50 to 80 percent as big as the world of Oblivion.

That said, it's not necessarily bad news. Fans of the series (or opponents of walking) might be relieved to hear that Bethesda is taking the quality over quantity route. Not to mention that 50 percent of Oblivion's land mass is still pretty darned big.
