The 2012 Olympics will be held in London, and Sega has consequently moved development of the tie-in game to Brisbane, Australia. Obviously!<br />
<br />
Today, Sega announced <em>London 2012 - The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games</em>, coming out next year for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/mario-and-sonic-at-the-london-2012-olympic-games"><em>Mario and Sonic</em></a> are the chosen Olympians for the Wii and 3DS platforms). It's developed by "the newly rebranded SEGA Studios Australia," formerly <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-creative-assembly">The Creative Assembly</a>'s Australian studio. Sega namechecked the studio's "state of the art motion capture facility" as a potential reason for the choice.<br />
<br />
As for the actual game, it features 30 events of unspecified Olympery, with online leaderboards.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/31/segas-australian-studio-making-london-olympics-game/">Sega's Australian studio making London Olympics game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 31 May 2011 13:09:00 EST. Hey, UK-based readers: Do you feel like totally humiliating yourselves? You should look into Microsoft's "Game with Fame" competition, in which one lucky, Kinect Sports-playing family will compete in virtual track and field events <a href="http://www.facebook.com/KinectSports?v=app_7146470109">against actual Olympians</a> Linford Christie and Mark Lewis-Francis.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/13/microsoft-contest-pits-uk-kinect-sports-players-against-actual-g/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Microsoft contest pits UK Kinect Sports players against actual gold medalists</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/13/microsoft-contest-pits-uk-kinect-sports-players-against-actual-g/">Microsoft contest pits UK Kinect Sports players against actual gold medalists</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 13 Jan 2011 13:50:00 EST. Sega has released a demo of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/12/ice-those-thumbs-sega-announces-vancouver-2010/"><em>Vancouver 2010 - The Official Video Game of the Olympic Winter Games</em></a>. We're not sure about the gameplay, but the <em>title</em> definitely deserves a medal. Come on, it has the word "game" in it <em>twice</em>. As for the demo, it has a sample of one of the Olympic sim's fourteen different modes, as well as the Landing Zone challenge. If you think your well-trained thumbs are up to the task, the demo can be yours for only 684MB of free space.<br />

But then a speed-skating Metal Sonic showed up in this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/13/mario-and-sonics-winter-outing-dated-for-october-16/"><em>Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games</em></a> trailer, and we were, however briefly, <em>thrilled</em>.<br />
<br />
Other items of interest in this trailer: superfluous Sonic character Silver the Hedgehog getting <em>really into</em> curling, a Bowser/Bowser Jr. team (which confused us a <em>lot</em> when we initially thought it was a paradoxical Bowser/Baby Bowser team), and snowboarding! Which seems to be <em>awfully</em> close to the concept of <em>Sonic Riders</em>. And in the gallery, a few pictures of snowball fights! Is snowball fighting an Olympic sport now? If so, we'll actually pay attention to the TV broadcasts.<br />

We may have ragged on the first <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/"><em>Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games</em></a> a lot, but -- as horrible as we thought it was -- it managed to capture the interest (and <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2008/03/05/mario-and-sonic-team-up-to-sell-five-million/">money</a>) of almost every man, woman, and child in all of the UK. So, Sega is working as fast as it can to get the latest version of its new money-printing machine, <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/tag/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-winter-games/"><em>Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games</em></a>, out to retail, <a href="http://blogs.sega.com/sonic/2009/07/13/head-for-the-slopes-october-16th-2009/">announcing</a> that the game will release this October.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/13/mario-and-sonics-winter-outing-dated-for-october-16/">Mario and Sonic's winter outing dated for October 16</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 13 Jul 2009 15:00:00 EST. The absolute best news gleaned from the session? Every game will have multiplayer unlocked from the start. Locking multiplayer is the worst possible design decision for a party game, and it's good to see that Sega picked up on that extremely obvious fact.<br /><br />Also potentially fun: the new game supports the Balance Board for events like skiing and bobsledding. We haven't had a reason to sit down on the Balance Board since <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/06/rabbids-rave-about-fitness/">Raving Rabbids TV Party</a>! </em>Well, a reason <em>other</em> than exhaustion.<br />[Screenshot via <a href="http://www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk/article.php?id=7758">ONM</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/03/balance-board-bobsledding-with-mario-and-sonic/">Balance Board Bobsledding with Mario &amp; Sonic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 03 Apr 2009 14:55:00 EST. The game is being developed by Eurocom, the studio company <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/beijing-2008"><em>Beijing 2008</em></a>. We're sure the developers have already come up with new and exciting ways to mash buttons and twirl sticks, so you'd best get your thumbs prepared. Don't forget your palms either; those calluses hurt! If you'd rather waggle Wii remotes, it looks like you'll have to wait for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/12/mario-and-sonic-head-to-the-winter-olympics-later-this-year/">the next <em>Mario &amp; Sonic</em></a> because <em>Vancouver 2010</em> has only been announced for PS3, 360 and Windows.<br /><br />Check out the teaser trailer above and the first screens below.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/vancouver-2010/">Vancouver 2010</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/vancouver-2010/#1427581"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/vancouver_2010-xbox_360screenshots16284close-upwm_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/vancouver-2010/#1427582"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/vancouver_2010-xbox_360screenshots16285first-person-viewwm_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/vancouver-2010/#1427585"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/vancouver_2010-xbox_360screenshots16286landingwm_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/vancouver-2010/#1427586"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/vancouver_2010-xbox_360screenshots16287preparing-4wm_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/vancouver-2010/#1427583"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/vancouver_2010-xbox_360screenshots16288replay-3wm_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/12/ice-those-thumbs-sega-announces-vancouver-2010/">Ice those thumbs, Sega announces Vancouver 2010</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 12 Mar 2009 16:30:00 EST. <em>Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games</em> is <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/10/olympics-licensing-director-jumps-the-gun-reveals-new-mario-and-s/">finally</a></em> "official." Sega announced this morning that Nintendo's mascot and Sega's cross to bear will compete on Wii and DS in virtual Vancouver, Canada, with all their friends (and "new faces").<br /><br />As part of Sega's release, it stated that the original <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/"><em>Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympics</em></a> has sold over 10 million units globally. The latest casual cash-in will support the Wii Balance Board and feature Alpine Skiing, Speed Skating and many other events. That's all good, but will pairs figure skating deliver tension and romance between Sonic and Mario on par with the classic ice-skating movie, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mrnd-rO456Q&amp;feature=related"><em>The Cutting Edge</em></a>? The <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/01/22/rumor-mario-and-sonic-at-the-other-olympic-games/">rumors</a> (that we all knew were true) appear to be true: Sega's got a winter version of <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2008/08/12/mario-pushes-olympic-gold-medalist-to-victory/"><em>Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympic Games</em></a> on the way. Dennis Kim, director of licensing and merchandise for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, seemingly revealed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/05/sega-acquires-2010-winter-olympics-license/">Sega's plans</a> to <em>The Province</em>.<br /><br />"Last year, 2008, they had a very successful game using Mario and Sonic at the Beijing Games, as well as a multi-sport simulation type of game," Kim said. "That's what's being discussed and planned for Vancouver. We are feeling optimistic about sales because of the Beijing experience." Kim has reason to feel optimistic: the first <em>Mario and Sonic</em> game is one of the <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2008/12/30/mario-and-sonic-and-an-unhealthy-obsession/">best-selling</a> releases on the Wii.<br /><br />Kim praised Sega's dedication to realism: "They want to get a real sense of accuracy, particularly with the landscape and the venues and the look of the Games." If the venue didn't look 100% accurate, people would be able to tell from the first moment a two-tailed cartoon fox stepped onto the track.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=207853%3Fcid">CVG</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/10/olympics-licensing-director-jumps-the-gun-reveals-new-mario-and-s/">Olympics licensing director jumps the gun, reveals new Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Feb 2009 13:55:00 EST. Sega has licensed the rights to produce games based on the 2010 Winter Olympics, taking place in sunny Vancouver, Canada. <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3172637">1UP</a> notes that more official information will soon be made available on the official website. Of the <a href="http://www.olympicvideogames.com/">official games</a>.<br /><br />This licensing agreement brings credence to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/21/rumor-sonic-and-mario-going-to-the-winter-olympics/2">rumor</a> that a <em>Mario &amp; Sonic at the Winter Olympics</em> game will be revealed soonish. For some reason, it never occurred to us that Sega would want to make a sequel to <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/12/mario-pushes-olympic-gold-medalist-to-victory/">Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympic Games</a>,</em> but <em>of course</em> they would. Wouldn't you, if your game was one of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/05/wiis-winners-and-losers-in-japan/">best-selling</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/30/mario-and-sonic-and-an-unhealthy-obsession/">games</a> on the best-selling console? Not even <em>Sonic Team</em> would botch that decision.<br /><br />This purported scan from <em><a href="http://www.axelspringer.es/html/fondos/PUBLICACIONES/NINTENDOACCION/MICROSITE/index.html">Nintendo Acci&oacute;n</a> </em>magazine teases a new <em>Sonic and Mario </em>title with the following text (as translated by Sega Nerds): "Who are these two and why do they come to see each other? In a heroic feat of strength, swimmer Michael Phelps has managed to hoist the hojillion Olympic medals off his neck and dive into the world of video games. It's true! Developer and publisher 505 Games announced that it has inked a partnership with Phelps, who first revealed his plans to swim in digital waters <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/01/60-minutes-michael-phelps-game-in-the-works/">earlier this month</a>.<br /><br />According to 505, it plans to bring Phelps to next generation consoles (a term we grow to despise more each day) and the iPhone. But don't be expecting to see Sports Illustrated's "Sportsman of the Year" on the cover of any game soon, as the first title from this pairing isn't expected to reach the other side of the retail pool until spring 2010. Of course, by then most of us will have forgotten all about Phelps' drenched mug and will instead be preparing ourselves for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_(film)">the year we make contact</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/15/phelps-505-games-announce-partnership-first-game-in-2010/">Phelps, 505 Games announce partnership, first game in 2010</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Dec 2008 10:45:00 EST. Ready to vicariously experience the thrill of hurtling through an indoor pool at speeds meeting and occasionally <em>exceeding</em> five miles an hour? In a 60 Minutes report aired last night, it was revealed that a game based on Michael Phelps, winner of 27 gold medals and at least 13 <em>platinum </em>medals was in the works, according to Gaming Target.<br /><br />Though we're not at all excited by a swimming simulator, if the game was exactly like <em>Ecco</em> except with Phelps photoshopped over the dolphin, we could guarantee we'd be picking it up.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/01/60-minutes-michael-phelps-game-in-the-works/">60 Minutes: Michael Phelps game in the works</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 01 Dec 2008 12:30:00 EST. It's natural, then, that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Ubisoft/">Ubisoft</a> would release some silly trailers showing their new mascot characters running rampant through Olympic events in Beijing. Also there are probably some Olympic-style minigames in the actual game.<br /><br />The latest trailer, above, combines the usual yelling-based Rabbid humor with some classic Bugs Bunny. We've embedded the last Olympic-style clip, from last week, after the break. It may come as a surprise, but there are a few Olympic gold medals that Michael Phelps forgot to nab, magpie-like, for the gold medal throne we imagine he's begun constructing. One of those, the gold for the men's 100m breaststroke, was won by Japan's Kosuke Kitajima. How did he best longtime rival Brendan Hansen? Why, <em>Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games</em>, of course.<br /><br />"See, Mario does the breaststroke," he recently told Yomiuri Sports. "And thus, it's perfect mental training for envisioning the actual Olympic hall."<br /><br />... Congratulations are in order then, but what's his secret? Strict 5am starts? Hours of training a day? A controlled diet? All three, we'd imagine, but also: <em>Mario</em>.<br /><br />It turns out that Kitajima likes his Wii, specifically <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/11/wii-warm-up-mario-and-sonic-at-the-thing-that-is-happening-right/"><em>Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympic Games</em></a>, which he cites as an influence. "See, Mario does the breaststroke," explained the swimmer to Japanese newspaper <em>Yomiuri Shimbun</em>. "And thus, it's perfect mental training for envisioning the actual Olympic hall." Riiight. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sega">Sega</a> can spend all it wants on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/02/sega-and-uk-still-not-sick-of-mario-and-sonic/">marketing</a> its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/05/mario-and-sonic-team-up-to-sell-five-million/">ubiquitous</a> game, but that's as good as free publicity gets.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/">Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympic Games</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#856006"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/800px-mariosonicolympicsdk-cg-jun11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#856005"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/800px-mariosonicolympicsbirdo-cg-jun11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#856004"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/800px-mariosonicolympicsjet-cg-jun11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#433842"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/msog_10910ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#433841"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/msog_10908ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Via <a href="http://kotaku.com/5035862/olympic-gold-medalist-trained-with-nintendo-wii">Kotaku</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/12/mario-pushes-olympic-gold-medalist-to-victory/">Mario pushes Olympic gold medalist to victory</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 Aug 2008 14:39:00 EST. When <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/25/mario-and-sonic-exemplify-comic-mischief/"><em>Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympic Games</em></a> came out last year, there were no current Olympic Games for the pair to be <em>at</em>. The game was still branded with the Beijing Olympics logo, despite Beijing not yet having <em>even a single Olympic</em>. Even with the weird timing, the game did <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/21/wiis-third-party-million-sellers-revealed/"><em>just fine</em></a>; we expect that with the Olympics in full swing, sales will pick up even more.<br /><br />Are you developing a sudden craving for mascot sports due to the rush of Olympic fever? Has the worldwide mania for athletic competition made you consider buying a game about big-headed animal-things and human caricatures taking part in simulated competition? If you already had <em>Mario &amp; Sonic</em>, have you broken it out since the for-real Games started?<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/">Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympic Games</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#856006"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/800px-mariosonicolympicsdk-cg-jun11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#856005"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/800px-mariosonicolympicsbirdo-cg-jun11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#856004"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/800px-mariosonicolympicsjet-cg-jun11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#433842"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/msog_10910ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#433841"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/msog_10908ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/11/wii-warm-up-mario-and-sonic-at-the-thing-that-is-happening-right/">Wii Warm Up: Mario &amp; Sonic at the thing that is happening right now</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 11 Aug 2008 08:00:00 EST. Rather, you'll pick from one of four countries to represent their tacit agendas and "fight terrorism."<br /><br />For instance, if you choose the Tibetans, you'll be tasked with dragging Chinese people out of your country before they "turn militant." If you decide to side with China, you'll need to tap the "revolting Tibetans" and turn them into farmers, otherwise "they'll suicide bomb." Also, for some reason, the Chinese farmers and terrorist Tibetans look like Raiden and Scorpion from Mortal Kombat.<br /><br />If that isn't controversial enough, you have the option of playing as Israelis or Palestinians, too. On the Palestinian side, you'll be charged with converting Jews to Islam by dragging them off the map. If you play as the Israelis, you will have to tap and convert Hamas terrorists into Jews. Again, if you don't neutralize them in time, they blow up!<br /><br />Looks like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/16/homophobic-homebrew-on-the-ds/">RanAway</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/25/hentai-homebrew-appears-as-real-demo/">In the Afternoon Sunshine</a></em> have some serious competition now when it comes to the most offensive homebrew DS game.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/olympic-battlefields/">Olympic Battlefields</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/olympic-battlefields/#964825"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/20080807-olympic-battlefields-ec-dsf-0-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/olympic-battlefields/#964824"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/20080807-olympic-battlefields-ec-dsf-0-05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/olympic-battlefields/#964823"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/20080807-olympic-battlefields-ec-dsf-0-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/olympic-battlefields/#964822"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/20080807-olympic-battlefields-ec-dsf-0-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/olympic-battlefields/#964821"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/20080807-olympic-battlefields-ec-dsf-0-06_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Via <a href="http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=2148102683#post2148102683">DCEmu</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/07/olympic-battlefields-four-worlds-four-dreams/">Olympic Battlefields: Four worlds, four dreams</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 07 Aug 2008 21:30:00 EST. As if <span style="font-style: italic;">Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympic Games</span> wasn't already home to enough <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blaze_the_Cat">abysmal</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_the_hedgehog">characters</a>, a group of hackers have discovered a way to unlock numerous other unused playable characters in the title, including Silver the Hedgehog, Jet the -- <span style="font-style: italic;">ugh </span>-- Hawk, and Donkey Kong (who would have been a welcome addition, actually). Birdo is also available, though comes with some sort of <span style="font-style: italic;">hideous facial deformity</span>, as though the model never had its nose finished. It looks kind of <span style="font-style: italic;">wrong</span>, truth be told. Not as wrong as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/27/taking-a-love-for-birdo-too-far/">this</a>, mind.<br /><br />There are plenty of other background characters that can be played with (some of which are fairly obscure), though only in certain events (such as trampolining). These include Shy Guy, Toad, the gut-churning <a href="http://sega.wikia.com/wiki/Charmy">Charmy</a>, Espio, Cream, Boo, Bullet Bill (!), Goomba (!!), "Heroes Enemy 1," "Heroes Enemy 2," "SA1 Monkey," and -- nooo! -- <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/13/you-will-love-big-the-cat/">Big the Cat</a>. Sprint through the tape and into <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/856006/full/">our gallery</a> for a couple more screens.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/">Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympic Games</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#856006"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/800px-mariosonicolympicsdk-cg-jun11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#856005"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/800px-mariosonicolympicsbirdo-cg-jun11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#856004"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/800px-mariosonicolympicsjet-cg-jun11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#433842"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/msog_10910ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#433841"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/msog_10908ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/11/birdo-and-silver-and-jet-and-donkey-kong-at-the-olympic-games/">Birdo &amp; Silver &amp; Jet &amp; Donkey Kong at the Olympic Games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 Jun 2008 08:45:00 EST. This metaphor particularly applies in the UK, where the Nintendo/Sega crossover has <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/another-week-in-europe">sold</a> over 1.2 million copies, and Sega (the distributor of the game throughout Europe) isn't yet ready to stop <em>yanking furiously</em> on those udders.<br /><br />Over six months after it launched in Britain, the game is <em>still </em>being advertised in prime time spots, such as during Saturday's final of <em>Britain's Got Talent</em>, which was watched by one-fifth of the UK (and which <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kKnNyJvRAY">that dog</a> should have <em>totally won</em>). And, with the Olympics due to start soon, Sega UK head honcho Alan Pritchard has promised that the company will continue to advertise the title "heavily," right through until the end of 2008.<br /><br />So there you go, Brits: if you weren't already sick to the molars of the plumber and the hedgehog, you ain't seen nothing yet. In fact, <em>Mario &amp; Sonic</em> could turn out to be the Wii's answer to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/12/brain-training-celebrates-100th-week-in-uk-charts/"><em>Brain Training</em></a>.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/">Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympic Games</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#856006"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/800px-mariosonicolympicsdk-cg-jun11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#856005"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/800px-mariosonicolympicsbirdo-cg-jun11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#856004"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/800px-mariosonicolympicsjet-cg-jun11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#433842"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/msog_10910ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/#433841"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/msog_10908ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/02/sega-and-uk-still-not-sick-of-mario-and-sonic/">Sega (and UK) still not sick of Mario &amp; Sonic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 02 Jun 2008 16:00:00 EST. All political controversy aside, bearing the Olympic torch during its long route to the Games is an incredible honor, and this year <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/pro-gamers-to-carry-olympic-torch">two professional gamers will take part in the international relay</a>. Through a sponsorship deal with peripheral manufacturer Razer, XiaoFeng "Sky" Li and Jae ho "Moon" Jang will both bear the torch as it passes through China en route to the Beijing National Stadium.<br /><br />Both Sky and Moon are professional <em>Warcraft III </em>players, with the former being recognized as the world's best Human-class player, and the latter as the one of the world's best Night Elf-class players. Both were chosen by Razer from a group of ten professional gamers, selected by the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games. Congrats go out to both.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/18/professional-warcraft-iii-players-to-carry-olympic-torch-in-chin/">Professional Warcraft III players to carry Olympic torch in China</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 Apr 2008 23:00:00 EST. The first pairing of two icons, <em>Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympic Games</em>, sold five million units worldwide on the DS and Wii. <a href="http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/news/mario--sonic-tag-team-for-five-million-sold/?biz=1%C2%A0&amp;page=2">GameDaily</a> reports the joint Sega/Nintendo published title -- which met to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/14/joystiq-impressions-mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympics-wii/">less-than-stellar</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/22/todays-most-olympic-video-mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympics-review/">reviews</a> -- reached the milestone in a little over three months, beating Sega's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/21/sega-expects-olympic-sales-from-mario-and-sonic/">own expectations</a>. Simon Jeffery, Sega of America's prez. and COO stated in a release that the game is "clearly resonating with the growing audience of casual gamers that want an engaging and accessible gaming experience."<br /><br />Jeffery goes on to say that the Olympics are still four months away, so he expects <em>M&amp;S at the OG</em> to be sellin' with the quickness for a while. Also, in an amazing moment of restraint for an executive, Jefferey says he doesn't want to "dilute" the idea of Mario and Sonic teaming up by throwing them together all the time, he doesn't think it would be "the right thing to do." And which territory is to blame for this game selling well? Turns out the sales have "been pretty even, almost remarkably so" globally. Time to confess and repent, who bought this mini-game cash-in?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/05/world-to-blame-mario-and-sonic-olympics-sells-5-million-units/">World to blame: Mario &amp; Sonic Olympics sells 5 million units</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 05 Mar 2008 11:40:00 EST. Fans eager to get <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/competitive-gaming/">competitive gaming</a> recognized as a real sport got a boost recently when the Global Gaming League <a href="http://wire.ggl.com/2008/02/15/ggl-announces-digital-games-worldwide-tournament-for-2008-summer-olympics/">announced</a> they will be organizing a video gaming "Welcome Event" for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. "The Digital Games" will include World Cup-style national tournaments leading up to an international finals competition in Shanghai, where Olympic soccer matches will be held.<br /><br />While video games are recognized as an official sport by the Chinese government, the tournament falls quite a bit short of being an official, medal-worthy event at the 2008 games. Still, it's an important first step to that eventual goal, and one that GGL CEO Ted Owen thinks will be popular in its own right. "We believe the crowds we'll get will be far larger than for the Olympic games themselves," he said. That's a little hard to believe, considering <a href="http://blog.legendarylife.com/interesting-2008-summer-beijing-olympic-games-stats">3 million attendees</a> overall are expected for the real games. If the GGL is lucky, maybe they'll be more popular than <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racewalking">racewalking</a> ...<br /><br /><a href="http://wire.ggl.com/2008/02/15/ggl-announces-digital-games-worldwide-tournament-for-2008-summer-olympics/">Read</a> - Announcement on GGL<br /><a href="http://money.cnn.com/2008/02/15/technology/kirkpatrick_ggl.fortune/?postversion=2008021515">Read</a> - Article on CNN/Fortune<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/18/game-tournament-to-be-welcome-event-at-beijing-olympics/">Game tournament to be "Welcome Event" at Beijing Olympics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 18 Feb 2008 12:15:00 EST. <br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/promotionalconsideration">Promotional Consideration</a> is a weekly feature about the Nintendo DS advertisements you usually flip past, change the channel on, or just tune out.<br /><br />Revisiting last week's theme of recycled assets, we're taking a look at the familiar artwork seen in a recent print ad for <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/olympics">Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympic Games</a>. And by "medal" we mean "pin with the game's logo on it." But other than that, this pin is <em>just like </em>an Olympic medal. Sega, who won the rights to the 2008 Olympics <a href="http://www.lockergnome.com/game/2005/12/05/sega-gets-gaming-rights-to-2008-olympic-games/">way back in 2005</a>, will be publishing the official game based on the real games to be held in Beijing this year. Creatively titled <em>Beijing 2008: the Official Video Game of the Olympic Games</em>, the game is being developed by Eurocom, who are best known (if you can call it that) for the recent game based on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pirates"><em>Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End</em></a>. It's worth noting that they also developed the <em>Athens 2004</em> Olympics game as well (or maybe <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/search/process?sb=0&amp;tfs=all&amp;ts=athens+2004&amp;ty=0&amp;x=0&amp;y=0">it isn't</a>). Thirty-five events will be recreated for the game along with recreations of many of the real world venues. Strangely, the game apparently offers a simplified control scheme that's easier for casual players to come to grips with. We're not exactly sure how you simplify things like mashing buttons and twirling sticks. Finally, call us crazy, but we're guessing the game will arrive in time for the Olympic Games later this year.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/10/sega-eurocom-tapped-for-08-olympics-game/">Sega, Eurocom tapped for 08 Olympics game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 Jan 2008 14:15:00 EST. This latest trailer features some fencing and ping-pong, but also provides us with a good look at the "Dream Race" event, which is basically <em>Mario Kart</em> without karts. <br /><br />More than anything, Sega's bizarre fixation on "rubbing" is on display here. Having already created <a href="http://games.kikizo.com/reviews/ds/projectrub.asp">two</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rub_Rabbits">games</a> built around the idea of rubbing (so much so that "rub" appears in the titles of both in Europe), Sega is using the term to describe the screen-digging back-and-forth technique used in most of these games. We don't mind -- our screen works hard and deserves the occasional massage.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/08/mario-and-sonic-at-the-rubbing-olympics/">Mario and Sonic at the Rubbing Olympics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Jan 2008 11:15:00 EST. We thought we weren't that into the DS version of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/27/mario-and-sonic-at-the-official-web-site/">Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games</a>.</em> But Nintendo has fully convinced us that the game is amazing and worth our time, using some <em>innovative</em> marketing. The first commercial here both influences our reaction to the game and <em>mirrors</em> our reaction to the commercial itself.<br /><br />First, we just watched, from the perspective of a player, as he tries the hammer throw the first time. The controls are easy to figure out, and he's swinging at a pretty good speed almost immediately. Then he releases the hammer and <em>AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH</em>! GO HAMMER! <em>We love this game now.</em> We want to buy the yelling-at-stuff sports game when it comes out on the 22nd. We'll be first in line to yell at all the retail employees.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=32824">GoNintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/07/mario-and-sonic-is-awesome/">Mario &amp; Sonic is AWESOME</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 07 Jan 2008 13:30:00 EST. IGN has dished out four new trailers for Sega's upcoming romp starring both Nintendo and Sega's most recognizable characters. It's also the first game to have both Sonic and Mario in it, although it might not be the one <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/smash-bros-brawl">you're waiting for</a>. So, check out the freestyle swimming above and head past the break for three more trailers from the other included challenges in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/05/mario-and-sonic-filmed-at-the-olympics/"><em>Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympics</em></a>.<br />

It's stopped just long enough for us to get a good look at it. Inside, it presents some of the 16 different events and how you'll have to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/16/mario-and-sonic-will-destroy-your-touch-screen/">destroy your touch screen</a> to ensure victory. Also, there are 16 different playable characters, but that doesn't make much difference considering Mario can apparently keep up with Sonic in a foot race.<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/05/mario-and-sonic-filmed-at-the-olympics/">Mario &amp; Sonic filmed at the Olympics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 05 Dec 2007 22:21:00 EST. Actually, we're just wondering if it'll be <em>good</em>, since the Wii version wasn't received with <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/wii/marioandsonicattheolympicgames">accolades</a> and some kind of parade. In fact, it was just the opposite.<br /><br />But, we're optimists. So, we're perfectly fine with believing the game will be <em>incredible</em> up until we have it in our hands and find out the truth for ourselves. Heck, we've done it enough times with other games, that's for sure.<br /><br />Head past the break for some more screens.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/21/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympics-for-all-to-see/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympics for all to see</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/21/mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympics-for-all-to-see/">Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympics for all to see</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 21 Nov 2007 14:50:00 EST. The handheld mascot showdown has been assigned a release date of January 22nd, placing it in the sea of calm following this holiday's storm of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/supermariogalaxy">intergalactic</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/masseffect">mega-epics</a>. By next year, you might actually <em>care</em> whether or not a portly plumber can best a hedgehog in a test of physical endurance. <br /><br />The press release notes that the DS version of Mario &amp; Sonic boasts single- and multi-card multiplayer, as well as exclusive Olympic events not seen in the console variant. These include platform diving, cycling and "Dream Shooting (Skeet)," no doubt an event tasking players with murdering the star of TV's "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0805663/">Jericho</a>" before time runs out.<br /><br />[Image: <a href="http://fanboys-online.com/index.php?cid=165">Fanboys Online</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/15/mario-and-sonic-sprints-to-ds-on-jan-22/">Mario &amp; Sonic sprints to DS on Jan. 22</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 Nov 2007 16:45:00 EST. The style is the same, and the events are all the same. The only major difference is the change in perspective done for the sake of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/16/mario-and-sonic-will-destroy-your-touch-screen/">controls</a>. For example, the camera in the hammer throw event is directly above your character, to allow you to draw swirls around him or her to simulate the character's rotation. For the events in which the controls are not significantly different, like the button-controlled trampoline, both versions look almost identical.<br /><br />Like the Wii version, the DS game contains a few off-the-wall Dream Events set in the <em>Mario </em>and <em>Sonic</em> universes. Two of these, along with a bunch of the normal events, are revealed in this latest set of screens. Dream Marksmanship looks similar to a normal shooting contest, except everyone shoots at what look like some enemy robots from <em>Sonic</em> games. And Dream Basketball involves flying hoops!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/14/mario-and-sonic-at-the-wacky-dream-events/">Mario and Sonic at the wacky Dream Events</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 14 Nov 2007 12:20:00 EST. <br />We occasionally fret that we may have already seen the <span style="font-style: italic;">whole</span> of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mario-and-sonic/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympic Games</span></a>, such has been Sega's bloody-minded determination to extract <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/22/mario-and-sonic-hit-the-trampoline/">every</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/09/mario-and-sonic-might-as-well-jump/">last</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/15/first-trailer-of-mii-integration-in-mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic/#comments">drop</a> of video from the game in the build-up to release.<br /><br />Still, the rowing is new to us, and it shows promise, if only because it looks like one of those events where a bit of timing and rhythm is the key to success, rather than the brainless, arm-waving lunacy required for the track-based events (this may teeter on being sacrilegious, but we don't <span style="font-style: italic;">all </span>miss <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2007/08/06/track-and-field-leaps-into-live-arcade/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Track &amp; Field</span></a>, you know). The official site for <em>Mario &amp; Sonic at the Olympics</em> has launched, providing those anxious to play some very real games with some very imaginative characters some fresh content. The rotund <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Sonic/">Sonic</a> suit looks pretty bad, and we question the validity of calling something "viral" when it's distributed via the same channels as officially-released material, just because it's intentionally kind of cheap-looking. <br /><br />But we have to admit, that this video for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/09/mario-and-sonic-might-as-well-jump/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games</span></a> made us laugh out loud. At first, there was something hilarious about the interaction of a normal human person with a guy in a Mario suit speaking in <a href="http://www.charlesmartinet.com/">Charles Martinet</a>'s voice. Then Sonic came along and replicated a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gT12hgxZhmQ">classic</a> <span style="font-style: italic;">Kids in the Hall</span> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVyHgK5QV7s">skit</a> and we, shamefully, LOL'd.<br /><br />The other video, not so much. But it's embedded after the break anyway.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/25/mario-and-sonic-exemplify-comic-mischief/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mario and Sonic exemplify 'comic mischief'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/25/mario-and-sonic-exemplify-comic-mischief/">Mario and Sonic exemplify 'comic mischief'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 25 Oct 2007 09:45:00 EST.
