We've finally got the details on the final song list to be included in the upcoming sequel, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/17/vicarious-visions-talks-guitar-hero-on-tour-decades/"><em>Guitar Hero: On Tour Decades</em></a> for the DS, and while it's got a lot more modern songs than those proposed classic tracks, it's still a good mix of songs that would be fun to play, we think. Enough of us blabbering on, though. You want the goods! To get at the list of 28 songs <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/15/guitar-hero-on-tour-decades-launches-november-17-alongside-stan/">you'll be jamming to next month</a>, check out the list past the break.<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/29/full-song-list-for-guitar-hero-on-tour-decades-revealed/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Full song list for Guitar Hero: On Tour Decades revealed</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/29/full-song-list-for-guitar-hero-on-tour-decades-revealed/">Full song list for Guitar Hero: On Tour Decades revealed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 29 Oct 2008 12:53:00 EST. He also added a transmitter to play the game's sound through his home sound system.<br /><br />Pretty slick, but how can he see the notes coming down on the screen? A mirror would help! Anyway, step past the post break for a shot of Eric's setup and a photograph of someone playing <span style="font-style: italic;">Guitar Hero: On Tour</span> with more traditional controls.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">See also:</span> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/the-ds-life/">The DS Life: While My Guitar Grip Gently Weeps</a><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/the-ds-life-guitar-heroics/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The DS Life: Guitar Heroics</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/the-ds-life-guitar-heroics/">The DS Life: Guitar Heroics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 23:59:00 EST. <br />The discs, colored green, red, yellow, and blue, tumble towards her, spilling like candy from a tipped box of Sprees, almost too many of them to catch. Her fingers lift then push, then lift then push over and over again above the corresponding frets, more mechanical than graceful. Imagine a pneumatic robot hand, and you will understand the choreographed taps of her digits; it is as if they learned to dance from footstep diagrams.<br /><br />She does not sing the lyrics or hum the melody or tap her feet with the rhythm, she has attempted to faultlessly play this track enough times that she is long past enjoying the song. Truthfully, she has always loathed "Rock and Roll All Nite" as a shallow anthem. This time, though, Gene Simmons is singing her victory, as she is only a few chords away from a perfect score.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/the-ds-life-while-my-guitar-grip-gently-weeps/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The DS Life: While My Guitar Grip Gently Weeps</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/the-ds-life-while-my-guitar-grip-gently-weeps/">The DS Life: While My Guitar Grip Gently Weeps</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Jul 2008 22:00:00 EST. Incorrect! As they did with the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/opera">Nintendo DS Browser</a> and its Memory Expansion Pak, hackers have developed a workaround making the game playable even without the extra hardware.<br /> <br />If you skip to the 1:30 minute mark in the above clip, you'll see Youtube user tinymonkeyt demonstrating his patched copy of <em>On Tour</em> -- instead of using the four-fret controller to hit notes, you can use the directional pad or ABXY buttons. Of course, it's possible for people who legally own the game to apply the patch enabling button controls, but it looks much more awkward than using the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/07/plugging-in-the-guitar-hero-on-tour-peripheral/">Guitar Grip</a>.<br /> <br />In other related news, according to the video, tinymonkeyt's mom isn't letting him buy <em>Guitar Hero: On Tour</em>. He is considering purchasing it anyway, however, and will probably "just hide it from her or something." We'll make sure to update you on any new information that comes up for this developing story.<br /> <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=92205">GBAtemp</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/08/rock-out-with-your-guitar-grip-out/">Rock out with your Guitar Grip out</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Jul 2008 23:00:00 EST. Like drums, or even a bass to back up that guitar.<br /><br />There's already <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/18/friday-video-one-more-time/"><em>Taiko Drum Master</em></a>, which allows you to wail on the touch-screen like you would a Taiko drum, but what about a good piano-based title? How about a karaoke game? What other rhythm-based times would you like to enjoy on your DS? For those of you looking to take part in the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/19/at-last-guitar-hero-on-tour-now-with-wacky-peripheral/"><em>Guitar Hero</em> franchise's transition to the DS</a>, it will delight you to know that big retail chain Toys R Us will have <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/03/guitar-hero-ds-bundle-is-almost-perfect/"><em>Guitar Hero: On Tour</em></a> available for you to play a full week before the game's release. On June 14th, between noon and 4pm, shoppers will be able to try the title out at a kiosk set up in the store for it.<br /><br />Any of you going to head down to your local Toys R Us to check this out? We love our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/10/red-black-ds-goes-brainless-in-october/">two</a>-<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/25/new-blue-ds-lite-confirmed/">tone</a> DSes around these parts, and the model that will ship as part of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/09/activision-announces-guitar-hero-ds-lite-bundle-new-tony-hawk/"><em>Guitar Hero: On Tour</em> bundle</a> is especially<em> delicious</em>. Frankly, silver and black will always be a winning combination. It's a color scheme that <em>cannot fail</em> to look classy and sleek.<br /><br />Alas, whoever designed this model didn't stop at just silver and black, but also decided to slap that ugly transfer onto the DS's upper lid. We appreciate <em>some</em> <em>Guitar Hero</em> branding was probably required for this, but couldn't it have been a little ... subtler? For those of you who are fans, <a href="http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3142115">Toys "R" Us</a> currently has this down for a June 29th release on its site, one week after the game itself hits shelves.<br /><br />
<br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=44998">Go Nintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/03/guitar-hero-ds-bundle-is-almost-perfect/">Guitar Hero DS bundle is almost perfect</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Jun 2008 08:45:00 EST. <br />In the video above, the awesomely named, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/30/lets-all-chip-in-and-buy-karthik-bala-a-copy-of-ouendan/">handheld rhythm game blasphemer</a> Karthik Bala (not to mention, CEO of Vicarious Visions) explains the perks and inner-workings of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/30/joystiq-goes-on-tour/"><em>Guitar Hero: On Tour</em></a>. If you're still skeptical about the game's appeal, you'll probably be seduced just by <em>how fun it looks</em>. Of course, there are those of us who <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/24/ds-daily-the-importance-of-a-track-list/">can't let go of</a> the all-over-the-place track list, but even so, this video interview makes <em>On Tour </em>look mighty tempting. <br />Wiiz has several new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/30/joystiq-goes-on-tour"><em>Guitar Hero: On Tour</em></a> screens, mainly showing off some of the dastardly tricks you'll be able to pull on your human opponents in the game's multiplayer mode. We still think the idea of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guitar-hero-on-tour/752993/">setting fire</a> to your foe's guitar and forcing them to extinguish it by blowing on the DS's microphone is really silly, but silly works for us!<br /><br />That said, the above trick is <em>easily </em>our current favorite: sending your opponent a <em>fish </em>mid-strum and getting them to autograph it; because signing fish is just so <em>rock and roll</em>. Check out <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guitar-hero-on-tour/">the gallery</a> for more.<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/02/duties-of-a-guitar-hero-291-signing-fish/">Duties of a Guitar Hero #291: Signing fish</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 02 Jun 2008 20:00:00 EST. <br />Earlier today, we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/30/joystiq-goes-on-tour/">pointed</a> you in the direction of Joystiq's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/30/joystiq-hands-on-guitar-hero-on-tour/">hands-on impressions</a> of <em>Guitar Hero: On Tour</em>, itself <em>on tour </em>as various websites tried the game out for themselves.<br /><br />One of those sites was ShackNews, which also got to speak to Vicarious Visions CEO Karthik Bala. And we had only just started reading when one of Bala's opening statements got our blood boiling: apparently, <em>Guitar Hero: On Tour</em> was developed to "see if it was even possible to do a really good music rhythm game on a handheld."<br /><br />Altogether now: "<em>WHAAAAAT?!</em>"<br /><br />We can only assume that Bala is totally unaware of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/08/ouendan-2-sale-redux/">vast</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/19/two-elite-beat-agents-videos/">treasure</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/12/taiko-drum-master-sequel-needs-more-cowbell/">trove</a> of rhythm-based awesomeness already available on the DS -- never mind what is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/29/first-tiny-rhythm-tengoku-media/">still to come</a>, or even on <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2007/05/11/virtually-there-the-dj-max-portable-concert/">other</a> <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/03/13/glory-freedom-this-is-patapon/">handhelds</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/30/lets-all-chip-in-and-buy-karthik-bala-a-copy-of-ouendan/">Let's all chip in and buy Karthik Bala a copy of Ouendan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 30 May 2008 20:00:00 EST. <ol>
    <li>Pshaw, like we really need anyone telling us how to rock out</li>
    <li>Ugh, not this <a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=qk0XnyrENrE">Patrick Fugit</a> wannabe from the first trailer again</li>
</ol>
As it turns out, despite the almost <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Almost_Famous">Almost Famous</a></em> kid, it's a hilarious video very reminiscent of Budweiser's "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHNt9rXSsTM">Real Men of Genius</a>" campaign! And, even when the accompanying singer gets annoying towards the end, the video stays informative with previews of multiplayer attacks -- like swapping their screens or sending shirts for your opponents to autograph. "Now, who do I make it out to? To your mama?"<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/28/guitar-hero-on-tour-video-of-genius/">Guitar Hero: On Tour video of genius</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 28 May 2008 09:30:00 EST. When <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/19/at-last-guitar-hero-on-tour-now-with-wacky-peripheral/"><em>Guitar Hero: On Tour</em></a> was announced, this blogger was completely on board (assuming, of course, that it would be lefty-friendly). After a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/30/guitar-hero-track-listing-revealed-ranges-from-great-to-maroon/">partial track list was revealed</a>, though, all interest faded away faster than you could say, "Ick."<br /><br />If you like the track list for the game, that's all well and good, but such things can't ever suit everyone's tastes. That got us to wondering, though, how important track lists are when it comes to purchasing rhythm games. Would you turn down the next <em>Guitar Hero</em> or <em>Rock Band</em> just because the songs weren't up to par, even if you love the gameplay? Or does gameplay trump even the most annoying of tunes? Also, do standards differ for games like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/17/ds-daily-eba-or-ouendan/"><em>EBA</em> and<em> Ouendan</em></a>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/24/ds-daily-the-importance-of-a-track-list/">DS Daily: The importance of a track list</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 24 May 2008 10:25:00 EST. A picture has just been added to the Gamestop listing, and there is no surprise to be found.<br /><br />The DS Lite <em>Guitar Hero</em> Stylus is <em>exactly</em> the same idea as the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/07/jammin-guitar-pick-stylus-lets-us-shred-our-touch-screens/">Jammin' Guitar Pick stylus</a> that Naki released to go with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/18/promotional-consideration-party-like-a-rock-star/"><em>Jam Sessions</em></a>. It's a stylus attached to a guitar pick. You hold the pick and use the stylus end on the screen, which sounds, at least, a <em>little</em> more guitar-like than just playing the DS with a little stick. <br /><br />The major differences between the two products? The <em>Guitar Hero</em> set has the <em>Guitar Hero </em>logo on the picks, and doesn't come with as many.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/13/wacky-pick-stylus-reborn-for-guitar-hero-on-tour/">Wacky pick stylus reborn for Guitar Hero: On Tour</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 May 2008 11:00:00 EST. This portable <em>Guitar Hero</em> thing is <em>much</em> bigger than we thought, and this show of confidence on Nintendo's part bears out Todd Greenwald's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/07/analyst-guitar-hero-on-tour-will-play-to-huge-crowds/">prediction</a> of big sales.<br /><br />In addition, Activision's Mike Griffith announced a new DS-exclusive <em>Tony Hawk</em> game to be released this year, that will "utilize new technology not yet seen on the DS." BD&amp;A, who make officially-licensed Nintendo hardware cases and accessories, will produce accessories for <em>Guitar Hero: On Tour</em>, meaning that they think the product is non-wacky enough (or lovably wacky enough) to sell -- and sell <em>other stuff</em>.<br /><br />Two listings at Gamestop hint pretty strongly at their initial products: a $10 <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=71135">DS Lite <em>Guitar Hero</em> Stylus</a> and a $20 <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=71134">DS Lite <em>Guitar Hero</em> Ruby Red Kit</a>, which comprises "a glitter case, 2 system wraps, and a cleaning cloth." <div align="left"><em>Guitar Hero: On Tour</em> is a weird product. The guitar controller, which would seem to be <em>Guitar Hero</em>'s greatest strength, is pretty much absent from the DS game, replaced with a vestigial controller that retains the basic gameplay <em>motion</em> but removes the rock-star fantasy. For some, the loss of the guitar shape may remove the primary source of fun from the game (lookin' like <a href="http://www.freewebs.com/ccdevillefan/index.htm">C.C. DeVille</a>); for me, it <em>enhances the fun</em>. <br /><br />Is it possible for a music game to be fun without simulating an instrument? Historically, yes. <em>Guitar Hero</em> may have roots in the instrument-based <a href="http://www.channelbeat.com/products/guitar/guitar_freaks_series.html"><em>Guitar Freaks</em></a> and other Bemani-series games, all of which use specialized controllers, but its immediate predecessors were Harmonix's <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FreQuency"><em>Frequency</em></a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amplitude_%28video_game%29"><em>Amplitude</em></a> for the Playstation 2. These two games featured the same visualization method and gameplay as <em>Guitar Hero</em> -- notes as icons, moving toward the screen <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klax_(computer_game)">Klax</a>-</em>style -- but used the PlayStation 2's stock controller. These two games were, in fact, <em>more complex</em> than <em>Guitar Hero</em>, requiring players to move between musical tracks. The <em>Guitar Hero</em> controller doesn't allow for this feature (and, of course, there'd be no reason to move over to the drum or vocal track with a guitar controller), so, in a way, the guitar controller hampered the game design.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.us.playstation.com/PaRappatheRapper/"><em>PaRappa the Rapper</em></a> used the PlayStation controller to control the main character's <em>speech.</em> That's about as far from representative as a controller could be, and <em>PaRappa</em> was well-received enough for the genre to advance. Now, just because <a href="http://www.nanaon-sha.co.jp/">NaNaOn-Sha</a>, Harmonix, and other companies could make great music games without representative controllers doesn't mean that Vicarious Visions <em>can,</em> or <em>will</em> -- but it does mean that we shouldn't summarily dismiss <em>Guitar Hero: On Tour</em> for not having a sufficiently guitar-like controller.<br /><br />From the looks of it, the Guitar Grip peripheral will provide a mechanically similar gameplay experience to the full-size controller anyway. With the exception of the fifth fret button, of course, the base game of holding one or more of a line of buttons and strumming on time is unchanged. So it's still <em>Guitar Hero --</em> it just doesn't <em>look </em>like it. This should really only dissuade people who play <em>Guitar Hero</em> in order to pretend like they're playing guitars. People who like <em>Guitar Hero</em> as a game will only benefit from a smaller version.<br /><br />Portability is especially novel for something like <em>Guitar Hero</em>, whose normal controller is <em>freaking</em> <em>huge</em>. Sometimes you don't have space for a bunch of big controllers! You may be dissuaded from bringing your <em>Guitar Hero</em> setup to your small dorm room, for example, while you could easily play <em>On Tour</em> in the back of a Volkswagen. The added value of portability, with a <em>smaller</em> price tag? <em>Rokken.</em><br /><br /> <hr width="100%" size="2" />

Whenever a new DS peripheral is announced, there's a brief moment of terror for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/20/ten-reasons-to-stick-with-your-phat/">DS Phat</a> stalwarts, as they consider the possibility of being forced into an upgrade out of desire to play <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Arkanoid/">Arkanoid</a></em> (for example -- but that one actually <em>does</em> work with Phats). Thankfully, Activision and RedOctane have not forgotten that some people like big DSes and cannot lie. The Guitar Grip made for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/21/gamestop-shreds-out-guitar-hero-price-release-date/"><em>Guitar Hero: On Tour</em></a> will work with both flavors of DS, according to RedOctane's preorder page.<br /><br />More interesting news related to, uh, your decision about whether or not to buy this: RedOctane is bundling <em>Guitar Hero</em> logo keychains with preordered copies of <em>On Tour</em>, and also selling a $60 bundle with a case made to hold the DS and Guitar Grip.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/31/guitar-hero-on-tour-grip-works-with-ds-phat/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/31/guitar-hero-on-tour-controller-harmonious-with-ds-phats/">Guitar Hero: On Tour controller harmonious with DS Phats</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 31 Mar 2008 12:00:00 EST.
