He spent many months after the accident drugged out of consciousness on rave-grade hallucinogens and enduring the highest levels of physiological pain during therapy that no amount of morpihne could tame. And then a cognitive psychologist told him to play <em>SnowWorld</em>, a virtual-reality game full of snowball-chucking snowmen and penguins, while his skin was stretched, a procedure that normally garnered a score over 10 on Brown's pain scale.<br /><br />Playing <em>SnowWorld</em>, he gave the pain a six.<br /><br />Hunter Hoffman, the psychologist behind <em>SnowWorld</em>, is working on further research into the art of pain distraction through video games, but already results such as Brown's show great potential. Hoffman is using $7.5 million in grants from the National Institutes of Health to expand his research, including the incorporation of <em>Second Life</em>-style elements into video game therapy. If you haven't fired up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/pain"><em>Pain</em></a> in a <em>grip</em>, you might want to do so post-haste -- the game was <a href="http://www.painthegame.com/Blog/?blogId=132">discretely patched</a> with a free, Axe-sponsored new level, "Pain Falls," earlier this month. Sony only just announced the new content to fans in an email bulletin, which we've posted after the jump.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/16/pain-adds-hurt-falls-a-free-level-sponsored-by-axe/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PSA: Pain adds 'Hurt Falls,' a free level sponsored by Axe</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/16/pain-adds-hurt-falls-a-free-level-sponsored-by-axe/">PSA: Pain adds 'Hurt Falls,' a free level sponsored by Axe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 02:00:00 EST. <br />
Like in Europe, new Bravia buyers in Japan will be treated to all three of these 3D games for free, along with a 3D <em><a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/05/31/motorstorm_demo/">MotorStorm Pacific Rift </a></em><a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/05/31/motorstorm_demo/">demo</a>. For those not buying a new TV, the 3D update for <em>WipeOut</em> and <em>Super Stardust</em> will still be free (even if the games aren't). <em>Pain</em>, however, lives up to its name with a &yen;300 ($3.28) charge to add the new 3D mode.<br />
<br />
Now that near-identical details and launch dates have been released for 3D support in Japan and Europe, we can safely guess that a similar promotion will be on the way in North America.<br />

If you're looking to ditch your old HDTV in favor of Sony's HX803-series Bravia 3D TV, due to arrive in Europe this June, you'll receive <a href="http://uk.playstation.com/psn/news/articles/detail/item274349/Experience-the-3D-entertainment-revolution/?site_locale=en_GB">four free 3D PlayStation 3 games</a>. It's not explicit whether the "free collection" will be comprised PSN codes or compiled on a disc, but the promotional titles, including <em>WipEout HD, MotorStorm Pacific Rift, PAIN</em> and <em>Super Stardust HD, </em>will also be made available on PSN at the same time. <br />
<br />
We're following up with Sony America about whether it plans to have a similar promotion in the same timeframe. We'll be sure to update in glorious 2D text if it does.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/15/3d-ps3-games-coming-to-psn-in-june-4-free-with-bravia-purchases/">3D PS3 games coming to PSN in June, 4 free with Bravia purchases</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 Apr 2010 11:18:00 EST. This probably wasn't what fans had in mind when they demanded an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/uncharted"><em>Uncharted</em></a> game for Sony's handheld. A series of new ESRB ratings reveals a new pinball franchise, most likely under the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psp-minis">PSP Minis</a> label, based on various first-party PlayStation properties. <em>Pinball Heroes: Uncharted</em> is the most noteworthy of the bunch which according to the <a href="http://www.esrb.org/ratings/synopsis.jsp?Certificate=28060">ESRB descriptor</a>, is based on <em>Drake's Fortune</em>. "Players use flippers to hit the ball around a crashed airplane, into silhouetted character targets, and off bumpers shaped like gold coins to score points."<br /><br />In addition to <em>Uncharted</em>, other franchises will be getting the pinball treatment, including <a href="http://www.esrb.org/ratings/synopsis.jsp?Certificate=28059"><em>High Velocity Bowling</em></a>, <a href="http://www.esrb.org/ratings/synopsis.jsp?Certificate=28057"><em>PAIN</em></a> and <a href="http://www.esrb.org/ratings/synopsis.jsp?Certificate=28058"><em>Hot Shots Golf</em></a>. Wait, no <em>Pinball Heroes: God of War</em>? That's a missed opportunity!<br /><br />Unfortunately, no further details of the <em>Pinball Heroes</em> franchise can be garnered from the ESRB listings. We're submitting a few questions to Sony (like "how much?" and "why?") and will update when we hear back.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamerbytes.com/2009/11/uncharted_pain_and_more_get_pi.php">GamerBytes</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/09/esrb-uncharted-pain-and-more-become-pinball-heroes-on-psp/">ESRB: Uncharted, PAIN and more become Pinball Heroes on PSP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 09 Nov 2009 17:02:00 EST. Idol Minds, known best for the PS3 downloadable game <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/tag/pain"><em>PAIN</em></a>, has laid off more than half of its staff, according to a report by <a href="http://kotaku.com/5386866/ps3-pain-developers-hit-with-lay+offs">Kotaku</a>. The original team of 46 has been reduced to a mere 20 through a series of layoffs, the latest of which affected seventeen developers.<br /><br />Kotaku's sources point to budget cuts from long-time publishing partner Sony Computer Entertainment. However, it's hard to ignore the irony of the team's namesake: other than a few expansion packs to <em>PAIN</em>, no major releases or game announcements have come out of the studio since 2007. What this means for the future of the <em>PAIN</em> franchise is unclear for now. Calls to both Idol Minds and SCEA were not returned.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/21/rumor-pain-developer-idol-minds-lays-off-more-than-half-of-staf/">Rumor: PAIN developer Idol Minds lays off more than half of staff</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 21 Oct 2009 16:35:00 EST. During Sony's second press conference at the Tokyo Game Show, Capcom's Jun Takeuchi took the stage to demo the PlayStation 3's new motion controller with his game, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5"><em>Resident Evil 5</em></a>. That's right, Sony will be bringing motion control to a handful of existing titles, including a re-released <em>RE5</em> in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/23/resident-evil-5-directors-cut-to-feature-jill/"><em>Resident Evil 5: Director's Cut</em></a> this coming Spring.<br /><br />Sony also showed off <em>LittleBigPlanet</em> being controlled by two people, one wielding a motion wand while the other used a DualShock 3. Apparently a mess of other titles will be getting the motion treatment -- 13 in total (<strike><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sony-2-gallery/2311978/">seen here</a>, mostly in Japanese </strike> see update below) -- with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/flower"><em>Flower</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pain"><em>Pain</em></a> standing out as notable examples. <br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> We've got the full list <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/24/playstation-motion-controller-on-track-for-spring-2010-release/">right here</a>.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sony-2-gallery/">Sony 2 gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sony-2-gallery/#2312003"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/sony-keynote-2-028-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sony-2-gallery/#2312002"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/sony-keynote-2-033-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sony-2-gallery/#2312001"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/sony-keynote-2-011-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sony-2-gallery/#2312000"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/sony-keynote-2-018-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sony-2-gallery/#2311999"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/sony-keynote-2-007-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/24/tgs-2009-sony-adding-motion-to-existing-titles-new-re5-with-mo/">TGS 2009: Sony adding motion to existing titles, new RE5 with motion coming Spring 2010 [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 24 Sep 2009 01:30:00 EST. Oh, my! Although the release of <span style="font-style: italic;">Turtles in Time</span> and<span style="font-style: italic;"> Silent Hill</span> on PSN this week is certainly noteworthy, it's the appearance of George Takei in <span style="font-style: italic;">PAIN</span> that takes the cake. The original <span style="font-style: italic;">Star Trek</span> star will be at your disposal to shoot from a canon and ... seriously, why would you want to hurt George Takei? He's awesome! The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/20/psn-thursday-andy-dick-edition/">Andy Dick hurtable <span style="font-style: italic;">PAIN</span> DLC character</a> from a couple weeks back was a far more understandable option. Check out the rest of the update after the break. <br />

<em>PAIN</em> has some of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/08/trophies-pain/">worst Trophies ever</a>. However, things are going to get oh-so-slightly easier for <em>PAIN</em> veterans thanks to an unlikely partnership with <a href="http://www.theaxeeffect.com/axeproducts.html">AXE</a>. (Yes, the deodorant company.) A new character, "Smooth Jarvis," will get a brand new set of AXE-inspired moves that will net you bonus points. These bonus points, in turn, can be helpful in unlocking <em>PAIN</em>'s "Affliction Addiction," "D-Town Destruction," and "PAIN in the Park" Trophies.<br /><br />We're certainly fans of this kind of in-game advertising (versus what <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/04/sony-wipes-out-interfering-ad-from-wipeout-hd/"><em>WipEout HD</em></a> offered). But, we <em>beg</em> the guys at Idol Minds: please make the "King of PAIN" Trophy easier. <em>Please!</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/13/pain-trophies-made-easier-thanks-to-axe/">PAIN Trophies made easier, thanks to AXE</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 13 Aug 2009 18:15:00 EST. "I appreciate PS3 owners getting pissed off because it's not on their platform immediately, but that's up to Sony I guess to address that," Team17 studio head Martyn Brown said in a recent interview with <a href="http://www.videogamer.com/news/team17_boss_calls_bribed_by_ms_accusation_bollocks.html">VideoGamer.com</a>. According to Brown, exclusivity is just a fact of life. "People on Live Arcade can't play <em>Super Stardust</em> [<em>HD</em>] or <em>PAIN</em> or a bunch of titles ... it's just the way the world works really." he added. Addressing concerns that his company was paid off by Microsoft for the timed exclusivity of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/alien-breed-evolution"><em>Alien Breed Evolution</em></a> on XBLA, Brown answered ... "bollocks" (British for "nonsense"). Instead, Brown <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/20/microsofts-early-faith-in-team-17-is-why-alien-breed-hits-xbla/">credited</a> the exclusivity deal to "early faith" from the publisher.<br />
<br />
Specifically, Brown stated, "In exchange for exclusivity we get a lot more promotion ... it isn't the case of here's some cash in a suitcase, It just doesn't work like that -- It would be nice if it did!" No suitcases full of bank notes, Mr. Brown? Oh, that's right, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/20/usa-today-gta-iv-dlc-named-detailed-dated/"><em>GTA IV</em>'s exclusive DLC</a> used up all of Microsoft's petty cash for a bit. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/19/top-10-downloaded-psn-games-of-2008/">most popular</a> PlayStation Network game of 2008 is finally finding a home on retail disc ... in Europe. A Blu-ray version of the physics-based action game will be out June 24th in Europe, June 25th in Australia and New Zealand, and in the UK and Ireland on June 26th for &euro;24.99/&pound;19.99.<br /><br />The offline collection will include all the expansions released so far: Abusement Park, Movie Studios and Sore Spots. You can expect a few DLC characters to be included as well, such as Tati, Ginger, Cookie and the Ded Baron. However, while the package is a rather comprehensive offering of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pain"><em>PAIN</em></a>, it will not include the <em>next</em> DLC pack, Museum, coming this summer. <br /><br />[Thanks, Daniel G.!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/16/europe-getting-a-pain-ful-blu-ray-next-week/">Europe getting a PAIN-ful Blu-ray next week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 16 Jun 2009 10:50:00 EST. <em>PAIN </em>has come a long way since launching with just one level, two characters, and no online multiplayer. It's managed to rank <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/19/top-10-downloaded-psn-games-of-2008/">at the top</a> of PSN downloads through a consistent stream of content add-ons, which -- <span style="font-style: italic;">you guessed it</span> -- have added new levels, new characters, and <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/03/19/pain-goes-online-today/">online multiplayer</a>. We got our hands on the next update, the <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/04/26/upcoming-pain-expansion-features-wedgies-aliens-and-trophies/">"Sore Spots" level pack</a>, and its new characters at Sony's recent Gamers' Day in Los Angeles.<br /><br />Read on for our full preview and to find out what's coming next from developer Idol Minds. Looks like PSN's #1 game of 2008 is getting yet another expansion. The next expansion, "Sore Spots," will add two environments: the Morningwood High School gymnasium and the alien-infested Area 69. The expansions will also introduce a few new modes, such as the "Fun With Explosives" inspired "<em>PAIN</em> Science" mode.<br /><br />The <a href="http://pain.us.playstation.com/post/2009/04/Time-To-Launch-The-Cat-Out-Of-The-Bag%E2%80%A6.aspx">official <em>PAIN</em> blog</a> features more details on the upcoming expansion, but we've taken a peek at the new Trophies for the upcoming expansion. To see Idol Minds' devilish new achievements, check past the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/26/upcoming-pain-expansion-features-wedgies-aliens-and-trophies/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Upcoming PAIN expansion features wedgies, aliens and Trophies</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/26/upcoming-pain-expansion-features-wedgies-aliens-and-trophies/">Upcoming PAIN expansion features wedgies, aliens and Trophies</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 26 Apr 2009 17:20:00 EST. Idol Minds' Travis Williams <a href="http://pain.us.playstation.com/post/2009/03/Ask-and-you-shall-receive.aspx">explains</a> that the large amount of physics data that is used in the game will demand a hefty internet connection: a minimum of 256k upstream will be required.<br /><br />Many new online modes will be introduced, including a paid <em>PAIN</em> content pack, dubbed the "Smack Pack." This premium content will include both Fortress and Darts modes of play. See a video of Fortress, after the cut.<br /><br />[Thanks, Andrew L.!]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/19/pain-goes-online-today/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAIN goes online today</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/19/pain-goes-online-today/">PAIN goes online today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Mar 2009 13:30:00 EST. From the "moments too late" category of stories comes the news that Andy Dick has recorded voice-over for his likeness in the PSN game, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/PAIN/">PAIN</a></em>. Tragically, it comes after Dick has purportedly sobered up and gotten his life on track.<br /><br />We would have loved to have put Dick in a giant slingshot just a few months ago when he was a total disaster. Now we're too nervous that our download of the "beat the crap out of Andy Dick" DLC is gonna be the one that pushes him off the wagon. <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://kotaku.com/5173024/psn-title-pain-offers-dicks-balls">Kotaku</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/18/andy-dick-in-pain-and-so-are-we/">Andy Dick in PAIN and so are we</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 Mar 2009 09:10:00 EST. (Makes sense, considering it's the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/19/top-10-downloaded-psn-games-of-2008/">biggest download</a> on PlayStation Network in 2008). One of the upcoming expansions to <em>PAIN</em> is a new Darts mode. This new mode looks to mix up the fun of Mime Toss with the competitive nature of Bowling. First <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/22/david-hasselhoff-to-star-in-pain-expansion-pack/">David Hasselhoff</a>, now William Shatner?<br /><br />If <a href="http://www.videogaming247.com/2009/01/08/william-shatner-to-make-pain-appearance/">VG247</a>'s supposed PlayStation Network calendar is to be believed, Star Trek star and Priceline.com spokesperson William Shatner will be the next celebrity offered for download in <em>PAIN</em>. SCEE hasn't confirmed the validity of this information, only saying "the PSN roadmap is for internal purposes" and "it's all subject to change." VG247 notes the Shatner addon will be available on March 19th.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/08/rumor-william-shatner-smashing-into-pain-in-europe/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/08/rumor-william-shatner-next-celeb-to-be-in-pain/">Rumor: William Shatner next celeb to be in PAIN</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 18:00:00 EST. Whether commanding starships or green aliens into bed, there's no mistaking William Shatner, even if he is a greasy smear on the side of a building. The man who invented the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Corbomite_Maneuver">Corbomite Maneuver</a> will soon put his body in players' hands in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pain"><em>PAIN</em></a>, reports <a href="http://www.videogaming247.com/2009/01/08/william-shatner-to-make-pain-appearance/">videogaming247</a>.<br /><br />While still unconfirmed, Shatner's ragdoll alter ego would join <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/22/hurt-david-hasselhoff-in-pain-expansion/">The Hoff</a> as the latest celebrity to be broken by the -- true fact! -- <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/19/top-10-downloaded-psn-games-of-2008/">most popular</a> PSN title ever. James T. During the holiday break, we discovered a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/31/new-pain-downloaders-experiencing-not-so-amusing-glitch/">terrible bug</a> in <em>PAIN</em> that rendered new purchases of the <em>Abusement Park</em> expansion completely unplayable. Looks like the bug has been identified and squashed. Scott Goryl from SCEA updated us saying the glitch is fixed. Those that experienced the bug will want to go back to the PlayStation Store and re-download the expansion pack.<br /><br />With SCEA back in the full swing of things, we're hoping it won't be long until we see other eagerly awaited patches: <em>SOCOM Confrontation</em>'s <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/22/socom-confrontation-1-30-patch-ready-to-go-live-in-january/">1.3 patch</a>, <em>LittleBigPlanet</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/30/littlebigplanet-glitch-may-erase-parts-of-your-save-data/">save data fix</a>, and <em>Penny Arcade Adventures Ep. 2</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/24/penny-arcade-episode-2-features-game-ending-glitch-patch-comin/">save data fix</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/06/pain-glitch-fixed-world-now-has-solid-ground/">PAIN glitch fixed, world now has solid ground</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 06 Jan 2009 15:00:00 EST. There are many people that are new to <em>PAIN</em> and its various expansion packs. The "Abusement Park" add-on is corrupted for anyone that downloads it right now. Many are blaming the recent 2.53 patch, which adds a free character and YouTube support to the game. "If you did not have the Abusement park addon downloaded from PSN prior to the update the level is destroyed and unusable, Items fall through the landscape the background image is blank white and the level is unusable."<br /><br />Direct-feed video of the glitch shows how the game is rendered unplayable ... because nothing gets rendered! Unfortunately, this glitch doesn't appear to be affecting a small group of people. A quick look at <a href="http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=pain&amp;thread.id=3251">this thread</a> shows a lynch mob asking for Idol Minds' head. Once again, this being the holiday season, it seems unlikely that affected individuals will get a patch in the immediate future.<br /><br />[Thanks, ThatBozGuy!]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/31/new-pain-downloaders-experiencing-not-so-amusing-glitch/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New PAIN downloaders experiencing not-so-amusing glitch</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/31/new-pain-downloaders-experiencing-not-so-amusing-glitch/">New PAIN downloaders experiencing not-so-amusing glitch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 31 Dec 2008 10:04:00 EST. PlayStation.com's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pulse">Pulse</a> program has <a href="http://www.us.playstation.com/psn">revealed</a>* PSN's "overall" most downloaded games of 2008. Now, before cursing the heavens that <em>PAIN </em>is at the top of the list, <a href="http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/12/19/pain-is-the-most-downloaded-game-on-psn-in-2008/">PS3 Fanboy</a> is quick to point out that the game was free with the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/mgs-4"><em>Metal Gear Solid 4</em></a> PS3 bundle earlier this year.<br /><br />The list is still packed with surprises, especially with the performance of <em>High Velocity Bowling</em> and <em>Aquatopia</em>. It's good to see that <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/pixeljunk-monsters"><em>PixelJunk Monsters</em></a> did well, but where's <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/pixeljunk-eden"><em>Eden</em></a>? <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/wipeout-hd">WipEout HD</a>'s absence is also noticeable. We'd definitely like to see Pulse do this as a monthly feature.<br /><br /><small>*Copied list after the break for our mobile users who may not be able to read the image.</small><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/19/top-10-downloaded-psn-games-of-2008/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Top 10 downloaded PSN games of 2008</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/19/top-10-downloaded-psn-games-of-2008/">Top 10 downloaded PSN games of 2008</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 19 Dec 2008 14:00:00 EST. The latest episode of <a href="http://www.us.playstation.com/psn">Pulse</a> reveals the top PSN game downloads of 2008. At the top of the list is Idol Minds' <em>PAIN</em>. This isn't too surprising, considering it was included for free with the <em>Metal Gear Solid 4</em> PS3 bundle earlier this year. However, we're surprised to see how well <em>High Velocity Bowling</em> has done. Other surprises include <em>Aquatopia</em> and <em>High Stakes Poker</em>.<br /><br />Do you think the top 10 list is missing any games? We certainly think so. Where's <em>WipEout HD</em>? Although it's a PSP remake, we think it's an incredible value.<br /><br />Here's the list, for those of you unable to see the image above:<br />

'Tis the season to be jolly ... and get free costumes. This week's free <em>LittleBigPlanet</em> costume is themed for the holidays. Everyone, meet Santa Sackboy. He'll be available for download on the PlayStation Store -- in two parts. But that's not the only free costume you'll be finding this holiday season.<br /><br /><em>PAIN</em> players will discover a new character unlocked in the next game patch: Reindeer Ed (see him after the break). The next <a href="http://pain.us.playstation.com/post/2008/11/The-next-Movement%E2%80%A6.aspx"><em>PAIN</em> update</a> will not only add a free character, but it will offer YouTube integration as well (something the game always needed!). No date on the <em>PAIN</em> patch, but we doubt it'll take too long.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/10/littlebigplanet-and-pain-getting-free-xmas-themed-costumes/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>LittleBigPlanet and PAIN getting free Xmas-themed costumes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/10/littlebigplanet-and-pain-getting-free-xmas-themed-costumes/">LittleBigPlanet and PAIN getting free Xmas-themed costumes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 10 Dec 2008 18:30:00 EST. Looks like the cause of the <em>PAIN</em> expansion pack delay has been resolved. If you looked carefully, you would've seen that there was a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/08/trophies-pain/">PSN Trophy</a> involving a <em>Street Fighter</em> character. (Street Rider - Use any <em>Street Fighter</em>(R) character to travel 2 miles while grabbing a vehicle) Looks like licensing took longer than expected, and that feature has been removed from the upcoming <em>Hollywood Studio</em> expansion.<br /><br />Travis from the <a href="http://pain.us.playstation.com/post/2008/11/Here-we-go-AGAIN%e2%80%a6.aspx#comment"><em>PAIN </em>blog</a> explains that the expansion pack will be available in tomorrow's PSN update: "Everything is going well and we will get our approval form Format at the end of the day. Unless something blows up (which is highly unlikely) we WILL ship on Thursday @ 15:00 GMT." Considering this is <em>PAIN</em>, we wouldn't be surprised to have <em>something</em> blow up.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/12/pain-expansion-coming-this-thursday-really/">PAIN expansion coming this Thursday ... really</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 12 Nov 2008 10:35:00 EST. This shouldn't come as a surprise to the <em>PAIN</em> community. The next expansion pack, Hollywood Studio, has been delayed. The pack, which includes everyone's almost-favorite Baywatch star <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/22/david-hasselhoff-to-star-in-pain-expansion-pack/">David Hasselhoff</a>, was originally scheduled to release this Thursday. "We were trying to get all the content/ legal issues squared away so that we could release and we held out even until yesterday. Unfortunately, we couldn't clear all our issues in time to deploy worldwide on Thursday," <em>PAIN</em>'s Travis Williams explains on the <a href="http://pain.us.playstation.com/post/2008/11/Here-we-go-AGAIN%E2%80%A6.aspx">official blog</a>.<br /><br />The team is trying to make sure the delay is less than two weeks. To make up for the delay, the team is promising a special Christmas surprise which they will make free -- a rarity in the <em>PAIN</em> world.<br /><br />To get a sneak peak at what could be the cause of the delay, look at <em>PAIN</em>'s <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/08/trophies-pain/">updated Trophy list</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/05/hassel-the-hoff-later-pain-expansion-delayed/">Hassel the Hoff later, PAIN expansion delayed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 05 Nov 2008 20:53:00 EST. Or at least, they will be when the expansion to Sony's PSN title, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pain">Pain</a></em>, smashes into the broad side of a movie billboard next month. According to <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20235089,00.html">People</a>, David Hasselhoff will be one of the characters waiting to be beaten to a pulp when <em><a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/10/17/pain-da-wood-da-mockracy/">Movie Studio</a></em>, <em>Pain</em>'s new movie-themed environment, is released on November 6.<br /><br />
<p>For someone who admits that he doesn't play games much, Hasselhoff is taking the idea of having his virtual body broken again and again in good humor, telling People that the idea of hurting himself "was just hysterical to me." The lothario also plans to inflict his own unique style of pain on players, lending his rendition of Culture Club's "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" to the title as an in-game track. We're honestly not sure who's getting the better end of this deal.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/22/hurt-david-hasselhoff-in-pain-expansion/">Hurt David Hasselhoff in Pain expansion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Oct 2008 20:30:00 EST. <p> Looks like the <em>PAIN</em> train is going strong. Just a few months after the release of the Amusement Park expansion pack, the team at Idol Minds is offering yet another level for the downloadable title. <em>Movie Studio</em>, scheduled for November, will add a brand new area to crash through and will offer a slew of additional modes, characters and Trophies. Some things that are promised in the next update:<br /> </p>

    <li>More than one launcher location (There are three that you can dynamically switch to)</li>
    <li>Single Player Fun with Explosives</li>
    <li>New Cratetastic Mode</li>
    <li>Unlockable FREE Character (Buzz, from the <em>Buzz!</em> games)<br /></li>

Even before <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pain">PAIN</a> </em>first came out there <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/09/new-pain-video-shows-off-gameplay-modes/">were mentions</a> of bringing other Sony characters into the game, but we didn't expect the first one to be poor naive Sackboy. If Game Informer (via 1UP) is to believed, however, we'll be flinging him out of a giant slingshot "at some point in the future." That's pretty much all the info that's available on the subject. Could this be the first downloadable character for <em>PAIN </em>that's worth the money? Or would you rather Sackboy was a little more choosey about the games he visits? We've been conditioned to think that he's no bigger than a plush toy, so seeing him all human-sized is going to be a little weird.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/18/getting-sick-of-sackboy-throw-him-around-in-pain-soon/">Getting sick of Sackboy? <strong>Update:</strong> Headline has been changed, and article altered to emphasize which content is free and which is not. The patch is free, but <em>Amusement Park</em> (an expansion pack) is not. Sorry for any confusion.<br /><br />The long-awaited <em>PAIN</em> Trophy patch is now available to download. Simply load up the game and you will be prompted to download the 325MB patch. Don't forget, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/03/pain-amusement-park-delayed-trophies-retooled-to-be-easier/"><em>PAIN</em>'s Trophies</a> have been retooled, to make them a bit easier than <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/08/trophies-pain/">originally intended</a>.<br /><br />There is one free addition to the feature roster, however. Each week a new mini-level will be made available. Each of these "PAINlabs" will be an experimental concept that Idol Minds are playing with and are releasing for you, the players, to test out. An interesting idea -- and best of all? It's free.<br /><br />The patch coincides with the release of the <em>Amusement Park</em> expansion pack, which adds a bunch of content to the game -- but only if you pay for it. Three new characters are also available to purchase.<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/11/pain-patch-adds-trophies-and-more-if-you-pay-for-it/">PAIN gets Trophy patch today; Amusement Park expansion in Store</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 11 Sep 2008 12:00:00 EST. Like a hot nurse kissing a mime, there's something good and something bad in <a href="http://pain.us.playstation.com/post/2008/09/That-5th-C%E2%80%A6Community.aspx">today's update</a> from the always-busy developers behind the PS3's bone-breaking simulator, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pain">Pain</a></em>. First, the bad news: the downloadable "Uncle Jimmy's Fun Park" level, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/08/sony-feels-your-pain-prepares-more-pain/">originally planned for release tomorrow</a>, has been delayed, and is currently targeted for release on the ominous date of Sept. 11.<br /><br />Why was it delayed? Well that's the good news: the development team has been spending its time scaling back the difficulty of the <a href="http:// http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/08/pain-to-get-trohpies-sept-4/">somewhat ridiculous trophies</a> it announced last month. Seems testers didn't have too much fun grinding their way through the "one billion points" trophy, among others. The new trophy list, which is copied below the break, is also set to be downloadable on Sept. 11<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/04/pain-dlc-delayed-a-week-trophies-toned-down/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Pain DLC delayed a week, trophies toned down</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/04/pain-dlc-delayed-a-week-trophies-toned-down/">Pain DLC delayed a week, trophies toned down</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 04 Sep 2008 00:00:00 EST. Trophy and <em>PAIN</em> addicts are going to have to wait a little bit longer. The <em>Amusement Park</em> expansion, originally due tomorrow, has been delayed to some time later this month. The reason behind the delay? Well, one part comes from the developers changing Trophy requirements. When the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/08/trophies-pain/">original Trophy list</a> was unveiled, many complained that they were too challenging, and could only be accomplished by those that played the game constantly. "They began to resemble the tedious level grinds in MMOs and not the spoils for being good," the <a href="http://pain.us.playstation.com/post/2008/09/That-5th-C%E2%80%A6Community.aspx"><em>PAIN </em>blog</a> admits. "So we thought rather than making people play PAIN for the trophies, it might be a better idea to let people play PAIN because it's REALLY FUN and let the earned trophies come from that experience."<br /><br />The revised Trophy list is available, after the cut.<br /><br />[Thanks, James C.!]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/03/pain-amusement-park-delayed-trophies-retooled-to-be-easier/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PAIN Amusement Park delayed, Trophies retooled to be easier</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/03/pain-amusement-park-delayed-trophies-retooled-to-be-easier/">PAIN Amusement Park delayed, Trophies retooled to be easier</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 03 Sep 2008 13:45:00 EST. Never one to be outdone by its European counterpart, Sony Computer Entertainment America just announced its very own 160GB PlayStation 3 bundle. Offering more than just &euro;70 worth of downloadable game content, SCEA's bundle includes <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/gc-2008-160gb-playstation-3-hitting-europe-oct-31/">the recently unveiled 160GB PlayStation 3</a>, Naughty Dog's excellent <em>Uncharted: Drake's Fortune,</em> a PSN voucher for <em>PAIN</em> (expires March 30, 2009), and a DualShock 3 controller, for the price of $499.99.<br /><br />Picking our way through the system's specs, it looks like the 160GB PS3 offers only 2 USB ports and no flash card readers, leading us to believe its functionally identical to the 40GB (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/sony-announces-80gb-ps3-will-be-399-in-sept/">now 80GB</a>) low-end model. To put it another way: it appears the 160GB model will not have backwards compatibility for PS2 games. As for availability, the press release vaguely states "November." We'll try to get something definitive on the backwards compatibility situation.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/scea-160gb-playstation-3-uncharted-pain-dualshock-3-for-500/">SCEA: 160GB PlayStation 3, Uncharted, Pain, DualShock 3 for $500</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 12:44:00 EST. We don't quite know how it does it, but the seemingly shallow<em> Pain</em> keeps finding ways to work itself back onto our radar. Before it's been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/19/pain-gets-some-free-content/">free DLC</a>, this time it's Trophies, being added to the game on Sept. 4, alongside the "Amusement Park" DLC pack. We're not positive, but it appears you won't have to grab the DLC to get the Trophies, they'll just be arriving concurrently. <br /><br />After the break you'll find a full list of Trophies, which run the gamut from seemingly impossible to embarrassingly crude. Which, as <em>Pain</em> producer Travis Williams points out, is completely appropriate for the game.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/08/pain-to-get-trohpies-sept-4/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Pain to get Trophies Sept. 4</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/08/pain-to-get-trohpies-sept-4/">Pain to get Trophies Sept. 4</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 08 Aug 2008 17:45:00 EST. By "substantial" we mean a new level - which will join the game's <span style="font-style: italic;">only</span> level - called "Uncle Jimmy's Fun Spot Amusement Park." Sony and developer Idol Minds reckon it's more of an <span style="font-style: italic;">abusement</span> park (their pun, not ours) and it's bringing more than just fresh scenery to the game.<br /><br />Slated to arrive "this summer," the <span style="font-style: italic;">PAIN</span> Amusement Park add-on will introduce new player-requested features, including online multiplayer and PlayStation Trophies. These are in addition to the abundance of added moving set pieces you can see in the above video. Looks like in the case of <span style="font-style: italic;">PAIN</span> and new content, it <span style="font-style: italic;">does</span> hurt to ask.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/08/sony-feels-your-pain-prepares-more-pain/">Sony feels your pain, prepares more PAIN</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Jul 2008 22:30:00 EST.
