Bloomberg is <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601101&amp;sid=a7v2pbgBVDGs&amp;refer=japan">reporting</a> that the company's stock tumbled down 5.9 percent today to its lowest point since early July '07.<br /><br />The reason for the precipitous fall isn't so much Nintendo's recent performance -- the company is still more <a href="http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/news/nintendo-profit-nearly-doubles-guidance-and-wii--ds-targets-raised/19181/?biz=">profitable</a> than a solid-gold hippopotamus that periodically spits out smaller golden hippopatami. According to Bloomberg, the stock sell-off for Nintendo and other export-based Japanese companies seems to be based on the recently reported <a href="http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/business/articles/0206biz-economy0206.html">rapid contraction of the U.S. service industry</a>, which has also caused problems for the U.S. stock market. Traders are reading the contraction as a strong sign of a <a href="http://www.bostonherald.com/business/general/view.bg?articleid=1071559&amp;srvc=rss">long-predicted U.S. recession</a>, which means less money to go around for non-essentials like video games.<br /><br />Will less discretionary spending mean tougher times ahead for the games industry, or is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/17/december-npd-no-wonder-youre-broke-this-month/">huge growth last year</a> indicative of a somewhat recession-proof sector? We'll see, but in the meantime we'd recommend stuffing your mattress with small bills and loading up on canned goods. You know, just in case.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/06/nintendo-shares-hit-7-month-low-on-recession-fears/">Nintendo shares hit 7-month low on recession fears</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 06 Feb 2008 15:05:00 EST. Imagine our absolute panic and horror this morning when we checked the news wires to discover that E3 -- yes, <em>the</em> E3 -- was going on <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSN2238037020071022">this week</a>! No flights scheduled, no hotels booked and we didn't even send <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/ludwig-kietzmann/">Ludwig</a> to the doctor for his dry-wit injection this week -- wait, we didn't even get our invitations to the event! Thankfully, after reading through the first couple paragraphs we discovered that there was just some horrible computer error and there actually is no <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e307/">E3</a> this week ... we think. They could be hiding it.<br /><br />In related news, IDG World Expo, the organizers of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/EForAll/">E for All</a> event, say that 18,000 attended the inaugural show. Maybe they'll be able to up those numbers by getting <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/30/e-or-all-does-damage-control-regarding-ea-sony-and-microsoft/">Sony and Microsoft to attend</a> when they hold E for All again (yup, it's already planned) much earlier next year at the LA Convention Center from <a href="http://www.eforallexpo.com/press/news/20070524">Aug. 28 -30</a>. Anybody who actually attended the event want to chime in on how it went?<br /><br />Read: <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSN2238037020071022">E3 video game trade show in radical downsizing</a><br />Read: <a href="http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=7631&amp;Itemid=2">18,000 Attend E for All</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/22/18-000-attend-e-for-all-but-first-a-little-panic/">18,000 attend E for All; but first, a little panic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 22 Oct 2007 09:10:00 EST. The major complaint about Namco's <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/103-2204069-1167800?url=search-alias%3Daps&amp;field-keywords=namco+museum&amp;Go.x=0&amp;Go.y=0&amp;Go=Go"><em>Museum</em> series</a> of retro compilations is that they're just <em>too faithful</em> to their arcade counterparts. People don't want exact arcade translations anymore, they want games remade unrecognizably in 3D! They want Pac-Man randomly inserted into every game!<br /><br />At least, that seems to be Namco Bandai's thinking. Either that or they weren't sure how else to rerelease <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/14/vc-monday-madness-more-ninja-than-you-can-shake-a-shuriken-at/">games</a> they're already <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/09/vc-friday-straightforward-killing/">selling</a> on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/virtual-console">Virtual Console</a>. The result is <em>Namco Museum Remix</em>, a set of Namco classics, now with more waggle, depth, and Pac! The remixed games include <em>Galaga, Pac-Motos, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rally-X">Rally-X</a>, Gator Panic, </em>and <em>Pac 'n Roll</em>, which is apparently a classic now despite not even being two years old. For that matter, <em>Gator Panic</em> seems to be based on a <a href="http://mobilegamefaqs.com/gameinfo.php?id=139&amp;name=Gator+Panic">cell phone game</a> which is itself based on the Whack-a-Mole like redemption game, and we have no idea what <em>Pac-Motos</em> was originally. Interesting what passes for "classics" these days!<br /><br />In addition to the remixes, the collection includes <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cutie_Q">Cutie Q</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dig_Dug">Dig Dug</a>, Galaxian, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaplus">Gaplus</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mappy">Mappy</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pac_%26_Pal">Pac &amp; Pal</a>, Pac-Mania,<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Pac-Man"> Super Pac-Man</a>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Xevious/">Xevious</a>. We poke fun at Namco for selling the same games over and over again, but this is an okay selection of somewhat less common stuff! Sorry to everyone who bought NES <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/12/vc-friday-lackluster-week-for-downloadable-games/"><em>Xevious </em></a>on the Virtual Console.<br /><br />Check out our gallery of screens from the remixed games. Some are faithful, like <em>Rally-X,</em> and others are completely incomprehensible, like the image at the top of this post, which is supposed to be <em>Galaga.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/namco-museum-remix/">Namco Museum Remix</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/namco-museum-remix/#444222"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/1p_07_pacn_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/namco-museum-remix/#444221"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/1p_06_motos_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/namco-museum-remix/#444220"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/1p_05_galaga_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/namco-museum-remix/#444219"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/1p_03_pacn_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/namco-museum-remix/#444218"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/1p_01_galaga_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/18/namco-goes-insane-after-too-many-namco-museum-releases/">Namco goes insane after too many Namco Museum releases</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 May 2007 12:20:00 EST. The titles? <em>Wellll</em> ....<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Toe Jam &amp; Earl 2: Panic on Funkotron</em></li>
    <li><em>Shining in the Darkness</em></li>
    <li><em>Kid Chameleon</em></li>
    <li><em>Streets of Rage 2</em></li>
</ul>
Sega seems absolutely committed to the Virtual Console, even moreso than Nintendo ... but aren't they going to run out of high-profile titles at some point? Alas. <em>Streets of Rage 2</em> is an excellent addition, and we've heard great things about <em>Shining in the Darkness</em>. Do you guys have some expert opinions? We never were big Genesis gamers.<br /><br />Titles will cost the standard 800 points for Genesis games, of course. As our sister site Joystiq <a href="http://www.wii.joystiq.com/2007/04/19/funkotron-rage-sega-announces-four-new-virtual-console-games/#comments">points out</a>, the only two titles to break standard pricing were <em>Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles </em>(NES, 600 points) and <em>R-Type</em> (TG-16, 800 points). May that list stay ever short!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/19/sega-confirms-four-more-for-na-virtual-console-checking-for-dup/">Sega confirms four more for NA Virtual Console</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Apr 2007 18:15:00 EST. In purchasing Japanese Nintendo games, there are included inserts that equal a certain amount of points, 500 to be exact, will score the gamer a copy of this compilation. As of now, there is no word on a release for the US, but here's to hoping it's successful over there as I know I'm not the only US gamer who would love to get their mitts on a copy.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamebrink.com/news/480-Game__Watch_Comes_To_The_Nintendo_DS.html">Game Brink</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/19/game-and-watch-compilation-coming-soon/">Game &amp; Watch compilation coming soon?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Jun 2006 09:13:00 EST. He was so wowed by the screen's brightness, he
made a video and shared it with us.<br /><br />After praising the screen's color and impressive viewing angle, Cabel
narrates, "The real kicker here is that this thing is not even at its brightest level. You can take it to a higher
level, at which point it demolishes the old system. And you can even take it to a higher level at which point using the
DS Lite <em>might kill you</em> [emphasis his]! The screen is undoubtedly amazing..."<br /><br />Alright Cabel, we
get it: you're literally swimming in <em>Katamari</em> t-shirts and you have a DS Lite that is so bright, you can damage
your eyes just thinking about it.
