The Paramount Movies app allows you to watch purchased and rented movies - both in standard and high-definition formats - from <a href="http://www.paramountmovies.com/">Paramount's website</a>. Yes, before you can watch anything through the app, you'll need to go through the website and spend some money first. As usual, you'll also need a Gold subscription to Xbox Live.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/12/paramount-movies-app-xbox-live/">Paramount pulls back the curtain on its movie-streaming app for Xbox</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 Jun 2012 22:00:00 EST. The humanoid lizards of the Gorn Hegemony are quite agile in the new game, a significant departure from their appearance in the "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arena_%28Star_Trek:_The_Original_Series%29">Arena</a>" episode of the original Star Trek from 1967.<br /><br />The race may come off as blood-thirsty killers in the new <em>Star Trek</em>, based off the JJ Abrams reboot of the space exploration franchise, but that's not how we remember them. The gorn are featured in one of the two most famous fight scenes in the original <em>Star Trek</em> series. Captain Kirk's fight with a gorn doesn't exactly hold up against <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuen_Woo-ping">Yuen Woo-ping</a> choreographed fight scenes in modernity, whereas his fight with Spock during the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amok_Time">vulcan's pon farr</a> is hilariously awesome.<br /><br />We asked the developer during <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2012">E3</a> if there would also be a Kirk v. Spock fight featuring the classic music in the game, but our question was deflected with shields at full power.<br /><br />We've placed clips of both amazing fight scenes from the original <em>Star Trek</em> after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/07/star-trek-and-some-hardcore-gorn/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Star Trek and some hardcore Gorn</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/07/star-trek-and-some-hardcore-gorn/">Star Trek and some hardcore Gorn</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 07 Jun 2012 09:45:00 EST. If developer Other Ocean understood one thing about adapting H.G. Wells' <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/war-of-the-worlds"><em>The War of the Worlds</em></a> to video game form, it was the feeling of humanity's powerlessness that the original book created. Set in '50s London as it's being attacked by Martians, <em>War of the Worlds: The Game</em> sees protagonist Arthur Clark making his way past the invading army to find his family -- though that's a lot easier said than done. We <em>are </em>talking about Martians here.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, that adherence to the book's sense of near-constant defeat is the most frustrating thing about <em>The War of the Worlds</em>: Arthur is such a vulnerable little meat bag that just about <em>everything</em> kills him.<br />

We knew it would only be a matter of time before one of Penny Arcade's imaginative one-offs got noticed by the cinematic powers that be. We might have placed our bets on The Lookouts or Automata -- as it so happens, though, the gaming comic's strip which <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/paramount-plots-next-animated-pic-194394">caught the eye</a> of Paramount Studios was "<a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2010/10/29/">The New Kid</a>," a one-page tale about a boy who's settling into his adolescent life on an orbiting starcraft.<br />
<br />
Paramount, which was met with success with its utterly wonderful animated film <em>Rango</em>, has enlisted the help of <em>Book of Eli</em> writer Gary Whitta to adapt the strip to a full-length animated feature. We're excited to see what he comes up with -- and ever-hopeful that somebody somewhere gives some similar attention to Automata. (Please?)<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/02/penny-arcades-new-kid-strip-to-be-adapted-to-film-by-paramoun/">Penny Arcade's 'New Kid' strip to be adapted to film by Paramount</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 02 Jun 2011 20:00:00 EST. Paramount has announced that Iceman, Maverick and the gang will hit the PlayStation 3 in two weeks. While the PSN version of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/top-gun"><em>Top Gun</em></a> is set to be released on August 17, the PC and Mac versions of the game remain without a solid release date for the time being.<br />
<br />
The game features a single-player campaign written by Jack Epps Jr., screenwriter of the original film, as well as multiplayer for up to 16 players. None of that is important though, because Paramount has licensed "Danger Zone" for the soundtrack, and that's all that really matters.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/03/top-gun-locks-onto-aug-17-psn-release/">Top Gun locks onto Aug. 17 PSN release</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Aug 2010 01:00:00 EST. Paramount has announced a new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/top-gun"><em>Top Gun</em></a> game in development at doublesix, ready to assault PSN, Mac and Windows PC this summer. Described as "a free-flying air combat shooter," the <a href="http://bhimpact.gamespress.com/release.asp?i=574">press release</a> promises "large-scale dogfight battles" as players jump into pilot Maverick's F-14, following his journey from Top Gun Academy to the Indian Ocean. <em>Top Gun</em> won't be a strictly solo affair, either -- five multiplayer modes, supporting up to 16 players online, will also be included. <br />
<br />
Screenwriter Jack Epps, Jr. will return to the <em>Top Gun</em> world, expanding on the film's events through the game. "With Jack Epps, Jr. on board, we're excited to deliver a new <em>Top Gun</em> arcade experience that holds true to the popular film," said John Kavanagh, VP of games at Paramount. Sounds fine by us, but we swear, Mr. Epps, if you don't fit <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0P9B7V4wDy0">the volleyball scene</a> into the game somewhere, we're probably going to write you <em>a tersely-worded letter explaining our disappointment</em>. <br />

Don't want to wait for a Blu-ray disc from <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/netflix">Netflix</a>? Wish you could watch an HD program instantly (provided your internet connection is robust enough)? The PlayStation Store will be updated today with HD movies for purchase from all six major studios. Previously, movies for purchase were relegated to SD options, whilst HD movies were available exclusively for rent. According to a press release from SCEA, "PlayStation Network is the first to offer high definition movies for purchase from all of the major movie studios," including 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Universal, and Warner Bros.<br />
<br />
The HD update will be available today on the PlayStation Store in the US, with "plans to launch soon in the U.K., France, Germany, and Spain." (Sorry, Canada!) While we still prefer owning Blu-ray discs, this downloadable option is yet another way for people to access content.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/09/playstation-store-expands-offers-hd-movies-for-purchase/">PlayStation Store expands, offers HD movies for purchase</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 09 Mar 2010 17:45:00 EST. Paramount has <a href="http://www.transgaming.com/news/?id=127">announced</a> that it's bringing the downloadable <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/star-trek-dac"><em>Star Trek D-A-C</em></a> -- based on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/29/new-movie-themed-elite-bundles-for-the-uk/">recent film</a> -- to the Mac. The game will be released with the help of TransGaming, meaning it will utilize <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/cider">Cider</a>, software that allows PC games to be run on Macs. In other words, your hopes of experiencing the <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/05/13/x3f-tv-xbla-in-brief-texas-cheat-em-star-trek-d-a-c/">mediocrity</a> of <em>Star Trek D-A-C</em> in an Apple native format have just been dashed. Sorry.<br />
<br />
The game is scheduled to launch this December and is currently <a href="http://www.gametreeonline.com/paramount/star-trek-dac/">available for pre-order</a> at GameTree Online.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/20/star-trek-d-a-c-coming-to-m-a-c/">Star Trek D-A-C coming to M-A-C</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 20 Nov 2009 04:00:00 EST. Transported away from its "late this summer" release window, <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/star-trek-dac">Star Trek D-A-C</a></em> - the mediocre movie <strike>cash-in</strike> tie-in - will finally <em>tribble</em> the PS3 (via PlayStation Network) and the PC (via Steam) with its presence <a href="http://Like we said in our XBLA in Brief when D-A-C first released earlier this year -- it's not only the name of the game, but it's also the sound people make right before turning off the game and realizing they spent money on the experience. DACK!">this November</a>. As <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/07/27/red-alert-star-trek-d-a-c-beams-onto-psn-this-summer/">previously noted</a>, the latest edition of the top-down pew-pew fest will add new ship classes, game modes, maps and pick-ups. If you need a better idea of what this game is like, we suggest taking a look at our very polite <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/05/13/x3f-tv-xbla-in-brief-texas-cheat-em-star-trek-d-a-c/">XBLA in Brief</a> on the title.<em><br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-dac/">Star Trek DAC</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-dac/#2001916"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/2009-05-05_01-33-30_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-dac/#2001915"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/2009-05-05_01-33-28-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-dac/#2001914"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/2009-05-05_01-33-28-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-dac/#2001913"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/2009-05-05_01-33-28-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-dac/#2001912"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/2009-05-05_01-33-28-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/10/star-trek-d-a-cs-up-on-ps3-and-pc-this-november/">Star Trek D-A-Cs up on PS3 and PC this November</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 Sep 2009 03:00:00 EST. The trailer you see above features another gang from the film -- The Lizzies -- who are apparently capable of at least one more special move (bringing the total up to two so far). <br /><br />Aside from re-confirming a Summer release window for the game on PSN/XBLA, the teaser only offers a <em>teensy</em> bit of gameplay. Though considering the fact that the Summer is nearly over, we're guessing it won't be long before <em>The Warriors: Street Braw</em>l all over your console's digital marketplace. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dw9yEuwohkk">Can you dig it</a>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/23/the-warriors-street-brawl-pugilizes-our-eyes-with-new-gang-th/">The Warriors: Street Brawl pugilizes our eyes with new gang, 'The Lizzies'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 23 Aug 2009 19:30:00 EST. Paramount <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/psn-stark-trek-d-a-c-this-summer">announced</a> that the PlayStation Network will be visited by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/star-trek-dac"><em>Star Trek D-A-C</em></a> "later this summer." Perhaps a demo -- or the full game -- will come with the Blu-ray version of the movie, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/22/wait-what-watchmen-game-plus-movie-hybrid-blu-ray-comes-on-two/">a la <em>Watchmen</em></a><em>?</em><br /><br />Like we said in our <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/05/13/x3f-tv-xbla-in-brief-texas-cheat-em-star-trek-d-a-c/">XBLA in Brief</a> when <em>D-A-C</em> first released earlier this year -- it's not only the name of the game, but it's also the sound people make right before turning off the game and realizing they spent money on the experience. <em>DACK!</em><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-d-a-c-1/">Star Trek: D-A-C</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-d-a-c-1/#1514417"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/dac_star_08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-d-a-c-1/#1535776"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/startrekdac05050901_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-d-a-c-1/#1535777"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/startrekdac05050910_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-d-a-c-1/#1535778"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/startrekdac05050914_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-d-a-c-1/#1535779"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/startrekdac05050905_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/27/red-alert-star-trek-d-a-c-beams-onto-psn-this-summer/">Red Alert: Star Trek D-A-C beams onto PSN 'this summer'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Jul 2009 11:15:00 EST. Electronic Arts told the <a href="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/entertainmentnewsbuzz/2009/06/e3.html">LA Times</a> during an interview this week that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/godfather-2"><em>Godfather</em></a> franchise is done at the publisher. EA Games label president Frank Gibeau told the paper, "We're not going to do another one." He then noted that there was no <em>Godfather</em> game in the schedule going out three years.<br /><br />EA's PR followed up with the Times to say no decision had been made about the fate of the mafia franchise and that "Paramount is a great partner." The speculation is that EA is toning down its focus on licensed properties and working on making a stable of original franchises to exploit.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/05/ea-exec-states-there-wont-be-more-godfather-games/">EA exec states there won't be more Godfather games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 05 Jun 2009 23:15:00 EST. Listen, as the writer of Joystiq's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/iphone-it-in">only iPhone-related column</a>, I do my fair share of playing licensed garbage. For example, I played a <em>Land of the Lost</em>-themed game that makes "Punch the Monkey" look like <em>The Orange Box.</em> I'm not even going to link to it, for fear that you'll play it. Seriously, it was the game equivalent of watching my immediate family die in a house fire.<br /><br />You can imagine my confusion then when I say that <em>Top Gun</em> is <em>shockingly </em>good. No, don't laugh, it's true.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/top-gun-iphone/">Top Gun (iPhone)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/top-gun-iphone/#2010458"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/topgun2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/top-gun-iphone/#2010457"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/topgun1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/top-gun-iphone/#2010456"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/topgun3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/12/iphone-it-in-top-gun/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>iPhone It In: Top Gun</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/12/iphone-it-in-top-gun/">iPhone It In: Top Gun</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 May 2009 14:30:00 EST. A man like John Singleton needs no introduction, especially around the leaky decks of the Joystiq oil tanker. Every week, we usually enjoy a movie to break up the monotony of <em>teh blawging.</em> Almost always, that movie is <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ga8o9eepj5s"><em>Baby Boy</em></a>. Now, the directorial genius of Mr. Singleton is being applied to a film version of Vin Diesel's gaming, uh ... triumph, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wheelman"><em>Wheelman</em></a>. And not only that, but Vin Diesel will also star, <a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118003352.html?categoryid=13&amp;cs=1">Variety</a> reports.<br /><br />The film -- titled simply <em>The Wheelman</em> -- currently has a script and is being put into production by Paramount. The movie will focus on "an expert driver (Diesel) who comes out of retirement to protect a woman from his past." This will be a nice opportunity for Diesel and Singleton to work together, considering Singleton directed <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0322259/"><em>2 Fast 2 Furious</em></a>, the movie sequel that Diesel opted out of.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/05/08/wheelman-movie-gets-director/">BD</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/08/wheelman-movie-incoming-vin-to-star-john-singleton-to-direct/">Wheelman movie incoming: Vin to star, John Singleton to direct</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 08 May 2009 23:00:00 EST. We already told you as much as we knew about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/star-trek-dac/"><em>Star Trek DAC</em></a> when we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/24/gdc09-star-trek-dac-details-and-no-we-dont-know-what-it-stan/">grilled the game's senior producer</a> and some folks from the film back at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2009/">GDC 2009</a>. Unfortunately, today's "new" information on the game from Paramount Digital Entertainment, Bad Robot Interactive, CBS and Naked Sky Entertainment (that's a mouthful!) did little to bolster our knowledge banks.<br /><br />We do, however, have a batch of new screens from the upcoming game coming to XBLA next month (and PSN/PC "shortly thereafter"), featuring gameplay with some very <em>Star Trekkian</em> vistas. The movie hits theaters on May 8, so expect to see the game appear on XBLA "near" the film's launch.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-d-a-c-1/">Star Trek: D-A-C</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-d-a-c-1/#1514417"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/dac_star_08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-d-a-c-1/#1535776"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/startrekdac05050901_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-d-a-c-1/#1535777"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/startrekdac05050910_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-d-a-c-1/#1535778"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/startrekdac05050914_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-trek-d-a-c-1/#1535779"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/startrekdac05050905_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/23/star-trek-d-a-c-hits-xbla-in-may-new-screens-hit-right-now/">Star Trek D-A-C hits XBLA in May, new screens hit right now</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 23 Apr 2009 22:15:00 EST. We were just getting geared up for a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/08/timegate-sues-paramount-for-using-section-8-name/">protracted legal cat fight</a> between developer TimeGate and movie studio Paramount over the rights to the name "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/section-8">Section 8</a>" ... but the whole thing fizzled nearly before it began. If you'll remember, TimeGate claimed that it shared the name of its FPS with Paramount, which later announced it was working on an interactive property of the same name, prompting the game developer to sue the studio.<br />
<br />
Now, Paramount has agreed to not use the name and, in turn, TimeGate has dismissed the suit. Bor-ing.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/23/paramount-wont-use-section-8-name-timegate-drops-suit/">Paramount won't use 'Section 8' name, TimeGate drops suit</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 23 Apr 2009 12:13:00 EST. We know that legal squabbles can be a little dry, but a new conflict between <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/section-8"><em>Section 8</em></a> creator TimeGate and Paramount at least has <a href="http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/19319/TimeGate-Sues-Paramount-Over-Section-8-Trademark/">an interesting story</a> behind it to spice things up. According to a suit recently filed by TimeGate, the two companies met several times to discuss business opportunities related to the game. But after said meetings, Paramount allegedly cut off contact with TimeGate and, three days later, announced a new interactive project entitled "Section 8."<br />
<br />
We asked TimeGate for further comment, a request which its lawyers advised it to decline. It's a shame, too, because we had <a href="http://www.timegatecon.org/index.htm">a great suggestion</a> for their next legal battle.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/08/timegate-sues-paramount-for-using-section-8-name/">TimeGate sues Paramount for using Section 8 name</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 08 Apr 2009 10:25:00 EST. We caught up with Benjamin Hoyt, senior producer at Paramount Digital Entertainment, David Baronoff, associate producer on the new <span style="font-style: italic;">Trek</span> film and <a href="http://www.badrobot.com/">Bad Robot</a> workerbee, and Joshua Glazer, CTO from developer <a href="http://www.nakedsky.com/">Naked Sky Entertainment</a> to talk about all things <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/star-trek-dac/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Star Trek DAC</span></a>. We didn't get any juicy screenshots or video, nor did we find out what the heck "DAC" stands for (although Baronoff did say that a lot of the fan guesses are "in the right realm"), but we did come away with a lot of information about the upcoming title that's tied to Paramount's May release of the new Star Trek movie. Beam down beyond the break where you can read all about it.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/24/gdc09-star-trek-dac-details-and-no-we-dont-know-what-it-stan/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GDC09: Star Trek DAC details (and no, we don't know what it stands for)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/24/gdc09-star-trek-dac-details-and-no-we-dont-know-what-it-stan/">GDC09: Star Trek DAC details (and no, we don't know what it stands for)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Mar 2009 17:09:00 EST. A game based on the upcoming <em>Star Trek</em> reboot will apparently hit retail (virtual?) shelves this May. Discovered by <a href="http://trekmovie.com/2009/03/09/st09-tidbits-t-59-days-heroes-preview-st09-game-spock-fu-nero-wart-more/">TrekMovie.com</a>, an insert going into the <span style="font-style: italic;">Star Trek</span> Season One Blu-ray release announces <span style="font-style: italic;">Star Trek DAC</span>. There is no further information on ParamountPictures.com/games (it just bounces back to the main site), nor on developer <a href="http://www.nakedsky.com/">Naked Sky Entertainment's website</a>. Naked Sky's first title was <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/roboblitz"><span style="font-style: italic;">RoboBlitz</span></a> a couple years back, but since then the developer has been fairly quiet.<br /><br />There also doesn't appear to be a publisher attached to the title -- perhaps <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/03/paramount-hires-new-video-game-executive/">Paramount is ready to publish solo</a>? We've contacted Paramount for further details and will update when we receive them. Check out the full <span style="font-style: italic;">Star Trek DAC</span> insert after the break.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/03/10/star-trek-movie-game-coming-in-may/">Big Download</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/10/rumor-star-trek-dac-releasing-in-may/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rumor: Star Trek DAC releasing in May</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/10/rumor-star-trek-dac-releasing-in-may/">Rumor: Star Trek DAC releasing in May</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Mar 2009 15:28:00 EST. Paramount recently announced the hiring of John Kavanagh, as the senior vice president of video games, at the company. Kavanagh's position will have him overseeing the development and licensing of titles based on the studio's films. He replaces Sandi Isaacs, who <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/16/paramount-searching-for-new-games-honcho/">left late last year</a>.<br /><br />Kavanagh's credentials read like the type of guy Paramount would want if it plans to finally kick off that gaming initiative <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/28/paramount-getting-into-the-games-business/">mentioned almost a year ago</a>. Most recently, he was an executive at Kuju, but before that he was VP of product development at <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/eidos">Eidos</a>, allegedly giving titles like <em>Hitman</em>, <em>Deus Ex</em> and <em>Timesplitters</em> the green light. After that, he had a stint running Crystal Dynamics and Ion Storm. His earliest work was as a programmer for Atari.<br /><br />Now we wait to see if Paramount actually commits to the game space like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/warner-bros">Warner Bros</a>., or if Kavanagh works on his version of the "Barney Stinson Video Resume" (found after the break) while keeping the executive chair warm for the next guy.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/03/paramount-hires-new-video-game-executive/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Paramount hires new video game executive</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/03/paramount-hires-new-video-game-executive/">Paramount hires new video game executive</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Feb 2009 09:52:00 EST. Although I assume that holding the lucrative <em>Saturday Night Fever</em> and <em>Mean Girls</em> gaming licenses means you've received a countless amount of quality resumes, the chance to work with Lindsay Lohan was too great an opportunity to pass up -- we actually almost worked together once, as I regularly volunteer at various rehab facilities throughout the Bay Area but she had supposedly "got all better" and checked out by the time I started at three of the nine centers she has "visited" in the last four months -- but, I digress. I humbly throw my hat into the ring of "exciting executive possibilities."<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/16/paramount-searching-for-new-games-pimp/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Paramount searching for new games pimp</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/16/paramount-searching-for-new-games-pimp/">Paramount searching for new games pimp</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 16 Dec 2008 17:45:00 EST. Paramount is in search of a new executive to head its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/28/paramount-getting-into-the-games-business/">gaming initiative</a>. <a href="http://weblogs.variety.com/the_cut_scene/2008/12/paramount-looki.html">Variety</a> reports that the studio is currently looking for someone to replace the outgoing VP of interactive and mobile, Sandi Isaacs. The movie industry site speculates that Paramount is trying to get a high-profile gaming exec. to run the publishing unit.<br /><br />Games based on <em>Iron Man</em> and <em>Saturday Night Fever</em> were released on iPhone last week, with casual titles based on <em>Pretty in Pink, Clueless </em>and<em> Mean Girls</em> planned for the future. Variety has also "heard rumblings" of bigger projects beyond 2010, but no details were given.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/16/paramount-searching-for-new-games-honcho/">Paramount searching for new games honcho</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 16 Dec 2008 13:40:00 EST. EA has opened the briefcase on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Godfather-2/"><em>Godfather 2</em></a>, revealing that the sequel you can't refuse will ship for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in February 2009. <br /><br />EA also shed a bit more detail on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/07/godfather-2-detailed-less-gta-more-rpg-rts-board-game/">previously revealed</a> "Don's View," which promises to kiss the gameplay with a<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/18/godfather-ii-has-rts-elements/"> touch of strategy</a>. Here you'll build up, expand, and defend crime rings against rival families by hand picking "Made Men," and sending them out onto the streets to do your bidding. <em>Godfather 2</em> will also include the previous game's BlackHand control scheme, promising "more visceral hand-to-hand brutality" this time around. As the old saying goes, if you want something done right, do it yourself.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/08/ea-dates-godfather-2-for-february-2009/">EA dates Godfather 2 for February 2009</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 08 Aug 2008 08:05:00 EST. With the news that a second <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/21/metareview-godfather-blackhand-edition/"><em>The Godfather</em></a> game is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/18/ea-boss-confirms-sequel-to-the-godfather/">in the works</a>, Mario Puzo's son, Anthony, is none too pleased with the first game. We can only imagine how he feels about a sequel, considering he's suing Paramount over promised royalties from the first game, which were apparently never paid to the Puzo estate. The family is calling for $1 million in damages.<br /><br />This stems back to 1992, where Paramount agreed to give the Puzos a share of revenues resulting from any subsequent audio-visual products based on the films.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/19/puzos-son-sues-paramount-for-godfather-game-money/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/19/mario-puzos-son-sues-paramount-over-the-godfather-game/">Mario Puzo's son sues Paramount over The Godfather game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Jun 2008 15:30:00 EST. Anthony Puzo (son of <em>Godfather </em>author Mario Puzo) is going to the mattresses with Paramount for neglecting to pay the Puzo estate the slice of profits from <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Godfather%3A%20The%20Game">Godfather: The Game</a></em> that they say they're owed. According to a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles yesterday, the family is claiming at least $1 million in damages.<br /><br />Apparently, a deal was put in place in 1992 that Puzo would get a cut of <em>Godfather</em> audio-visual products due to the skimpy check a then-unknown Puzo got for signing over the rights to his book.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/19/puzos-son-sues-paramount-for-godfather-game-money/">Puzo's son sues Paramount for Godfather game money</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Jun 2008 12:30:00 EST. We knew that Paramount was '<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/04/paramount-very-very-excited-about-games-space/">very, very excited</a>' about the games space, but today we're getting the first look at how that enthusiasm will translate into a publishing business. <a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117983059.html?categoryid=1009&amp;cs=1">Variety reported today</a> on Paramount's expanded interactive department, which will put a focus on mobile, handheld and casual games because ... well, because they're cheap to develop and businesses like money.<br /><br />The games wing isn't completely separate from the films business though, Paramount will only be putting its muscle behind new licenses and catalog titles (it will continue to license properties out to other companies). So ... catalog titles, eh? Dare we hope? Is it finally time for the whip-snapping, bullet-dodging action ... of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5_W-40ND6g&amp;feature=related"><em>Pootie Tang: The Game</em></a>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/28/paramount-getting-into-the-games-business/">Paramount getting into the games business</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 28 Mar 2008 08:30:00 EST. Paramount tells <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/29793/Paramount-Were-excited-about-games">MCV</a> that the studio would like to increase its presence in video games and even establish a publishing division. Paramount Digital's General Manager of Worldwide Distribution, Alex Carloss, says being part of Viacom gives Paramount inroads into many worlds and the studio is "very, very excited" about growth into the "interactive entertainment market." He concludes, "You're going to see an awful lot more from Paramount in the space."<br /><br />When asked if Paramount would follow Warner Brothers into third-party games publishing, Carloss replied it would be "imprudent" to give "guidance" on that. Being a part of a behemoth like Viacom certainly has its advantages. Another Viacom child, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mtv">MTV</a>, is set to spend <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/16/mtv-spending-500-million-on-games-in-next-two-years/">$500 million over the next two years</a>, and initial investments <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/03/former-harmonix-shareholders-receive-209-million-from-viacom/">seem to be paying off</a>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/news/paramount-very-excited-about-video-games-/?biz=1">GameDaily</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/04/paramount-very-very-excited-about-games-space/">Paramount 'very, very, excited' about games space</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 Mar 2008 19:55:00 EST. HD DVD is officially against the ropes and is getting battered by wicked left and right hooks to the noggin by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/blu-ray/">Blu-ray</a>. But unlike a punch drunk boxer giving it one last shot at the win, it appears that the HD DVD camp is slowly coming to grips with its grim future.<br /><br />The camp responded to earlier reports that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/11/netflix-goes-blu-ray-exclusive/">Netflix would only carry Blu-ray titles</a> as well as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/11/best-buy-backing-blu-ray-beginning-march/">Best Buy recommending Blu-ray as the HD standard</a>. "We have long held the belief that HD DVD is the best format for consumers based on quality and value, and with more than 1 million HD DVD players on the market, it's unfortunate to see Netflix make the decision to only stock Blu-ray titles going forward," the statement read. "While the Best Buy announcement says they will recommend Blu-ray, at least they will continue to carry HD DVD and offer consumers a choice at retail."<br /><br />Sure, they're not exactly admitting defeat yet, but it's almost sad to see the HD DVD camp attempting to find a silver lining in the fact that Best Buy is still carrying its discs despite promoting its competitor as the superior product. With overwhelming industry support leaning in Blu-ray's favor, it appears the only thing Sony needs to declare full victory is the support of Universal and Paramount. However, we believe it's only a matter of time before they're "seeing Blu."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/12/hd-dvd-camp-responds-to-blu-ray-progress/">HD DVD camp responds to Blu-ray progress</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 Feb 2008 11:00:00 EST. Good news we say, although the the whole "current plan" wording doesn't put us at complete ease.<br /><br />HD DVD is getting its metaphorical bum whipped lately and things do not look to be getting any brighter. <br /><br />The <a href="http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/dc409afa-bd75-11dc-b7e6-0000779fd2ac.html?nclick_check=1">Financial Times</a> has cooked up the latest HD DVD versus Blu-ray rumor and are claiming that Paramount may be close to announcing that they're going Blu-ray exclusive and abandon their multi-million dollar <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/20/paramount-dreamworks-animation-drop-blu-ray/">partnership</a> with the HD DVD camp. The rumor is based on sources close to Paramount's deal with Toshiba saying that there is a clause in the contract that allows Paramount to back Blu-ray in the event Warner Bros. goes blu. And wouldn't you know, last week Warner <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/04/warner-drops-hd-dvd-goes-blu-ray-only/">did just that</a>. If Paramount were to jump to Blu-ray then Sony would have a massive choke hold on the HD format war further pushing their movie studio support higher than their current 70% rate. The other question mark in the equation is Dreamworks who are best buds with Paramount and are said to have a similar contract with Toshiba. Oh well, there's always Universal. They got HD DVD's back ... don't they?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gizmodo.com/341983/hd-dvd-really-dead-now-paramount-following-warner-to-blu+ray+only-party">Gizmodo</a>, Thanks <a href="http://www.rhrides.com">DjDATZ</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/08/rumor-paramount-to-jump-the-hd-dvd-ship-too/">Rumor: Paramount to jump the HD DVD ship too? It's probably fair to say we're all tired of hi-def movies coming on two formats, and we just can't wait until this silly war is over. Thankfully, the end is in sight, according to Forrester Research, which released a report stating it believes the high-def movie format war will finally end in 18 months with Sony's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/blu-ray/">Blu-ray</a> eventually coming out on top. <br /><br />However, Forrester Research analyst J.P. Gownder said Sony still has some work to go before it can be crowned, beginning with cutting prices. "Blu-ray needs to offer a viable hardware model at the $250 price point by Christmas 2007," he said. "Failure to alter strategy would open up Blu-ray to a possible upset defeat at the hands of HD DVD."<br /><br />Although <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/20/paramount-drops-blu-ray-support-everybody-groans/">Paramount's defection</a> to the HD DVD camp certainly was a blow to Blu-ray, companies have been ramping up support of Sony's movie format, both with increased <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/fox-and-mgm-expand-blu-ray-exclusive-offerings/">movie support</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/19/target-expanding-blu-ray-shelf-space/">shelf space</a>. Either way, we just hope it comes to an end long before their prognostication.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/26/report-blu-ray-hd-dvd-war-to-end-in-18-months/">Report: Blu-ray/HD DVD war to end in 18 months</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 26 Sep 2007 11:00:00 EST. The high-definition format war was due for a shakeup. Following <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/20/paramount-and-dreamworks-ditch-blu-ray-for-hd-dvd-exclusivity/">yesterday's news</a> that Paramount will be ditching Blu-ray in favor of HD-DVD exclusivity, Twentieth Century Fox and MGM (whose video releases are, not coincidentally, handled by Fox) pledged more support for the Sony-backed Blu-ray, citing the format's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/16/blu-ray-outselling-hd-dvd-2-to-1-this-year/">dominant sales</a> compared to HD-DVD.<br /><br />That pledge totals 29 new Blu-ray releases by the end of the year, which breaks down as follows:<br />
<ul>
    <li>Six new films from Fox, including Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and Live Free or Die Hard, that will be released day and date with the DVD version.</li>
    <li>Four day and date (for U.S. only) Blu-ray and DVD new releases from MGM</li>
    <li>19 titles deemed "must have on Blu-ray" from the two studios' collection</li>
</ul>
Additionally, Fox has promised to bring television drama <em>Prison Break</em> to Blu-ray. According to the announcement (via <a href="http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=17187">GameDaily</a>), Fox said it intends to release "at least one state-of-the-art title per month featuring numerous BD 'firsts.'"<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/08/21/fox-and-mgm-expand-blu-ray-exclusive-offerings/">PS3 Fanboy</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/fox-mgm-pledge-more-support-for-blu-ray/">Fox, MGM pledge more support for Blu-ray</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 Aug 2007 13:25:00 EST. According to Kevin Avery, president of Paramount Home Entertainment, the move was made because HD DVD offers better quality, cheaper players, and lower manufacturing costs. So, when you go shopping for the hi-def version of <em>Transformers</em> this fall, the only place to find it is in the HD DVD section. Furthermore, Dreamworks Animations films like <em>Shrek 3</em> will also be exclusive to the format. Thus, you have one more reason to not regret buying that 360 <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/HDDVD/">HD DVD</a> player (unless you hated <em>Transformers</em>, in which case ... um, sorry?).<br /><br />Us, we're going to hide in a bunker with our DVDs and wait for it all to blow over.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2007/08/20/dreamworks-animation-paramount-choose-hd-dvd.aspx">Major Nelson</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/20/paramount-dreamworks-animation-drop-blu-ray/">Paramount, Dreamworks Animation drop Blu-Ray</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 20 Aug 2007 16:30:00 EST. According to Viacom, they made this decision based on researching the benefits of HD-DVD, which "confirmed the clear benefits of HD DVD." Some of the benefits of HD-DVD that they mentioned included lower sales, a much smaller user base, and limited storage space (okay okay, they actually said 'market ready technology' and 'lower manufacturing costs').<br /><br />There are rumors of a 150 million dollar payout by the HD-DVD consortium to nab the Viacom exclusivity, which sure would help explain the move more than the officially given reasons. Regardless, we now can look at the format-war that nobody wanted getting strung out even longer. Yay -- thanks Viacom.<br /><br />[Thanks to everybody who sent this in]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/20/paramount-drops-blu-ray-support-everybody-groans/">Paramount drops Blu-ray support -- everybody groans</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 20 Aug 2007 14:15:00 EST. We are, <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com">by definition</a>, Fanboys. We're <em>huge</em> followers of Nintendo; we eagerly await every drop of news that springs forth from those locked doors in Kyoto, we have an effigy of Reggie in our bedrooms, and we attempt to feed mushrooms to every Italian we cross in the street.<br /><br />The word "fanboy" has a negative connotation these days. With the possible exception of the PC vs. Mac battle, it's quite rare to see people galvanize and root for multi-billion dollar companies as we do in the land of gaming. People do not "root" for Paramount Pictures, nor do they "cheer" for Exxon-Mobil. One could make the case that we want Nintendo to succeed because their success will breed more of the same: as in, more of the franchises we know and love. But why are we so passionate, so stalwart in our fandom? Is it truly a "bad" thing to be a fanboy, or do you bleed phazon and red potion? <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wwu">Let's hear it!</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/06/wii-warm-up-the-nature-of-the-fanboy/">Wii Warm Up: The nature of the fanboy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 06 Feb 2007 09:00:00 EST. To promote this momentous occasion, a few trailers have been put up on Marketplace, featuring previews of what you'll be able to download. Yesterday, it was a Paramount Pictures preview, and today it's MTV. Naturally, these videos are there to promote all the high definition content you'll be able to buy starting on Thanksgiving eve. Why then are these videos so damned ugly? The Paramount download wasn't great but it was passable. Now, the MTV video ... well, we've seen higher resolutions on <a href="http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=Xbox360Fanboy">YouTube</a>. Seriously, it's a pixelated mess, like watching something on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Trap">SEGA CD</a>. What's funny is that we actually grabbed the "HD" version of the video. Let's hope this is a mistake and not an indication of what we can expect from the video Marketplace.<br /><br />Anyone grab the UFC trailers? Are they any better?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/10/low-def-trailers-for-high-def-content-on-xblm/">Low def trailers for High Def content on XBLM</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 10 Nov 2006 12:30:00 EST. And without any warning, the Transformers movie teaser has arrived four days early. Paramount and Dreamworks have given us a pleasant surprise for the holiday weekend, but I wouldn't count on the multi-platform game launching ahead of schedule next Spring. It has been six months since Activision <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/01/16/activision-grabs-transformers-movie-license/">acquired</a> publishing rights, and they still haven't announced a developer.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/30/transformers-trailer-arrives-early/">Transformers teaser arrives early</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 30 Jun 2006 11:35:00 EST.
