Although we <em>were</em> briefly confused by what we <em>thought</em> was supposed to be <em>Gitaroo-Man -- </em>until we realized it was <em>Gitaroo-Man</em>'s "Legendary Theme" being played in <em>Guitar Hero</em>. <br /> <br /> Now we can only hope that someone runs with the idea and delivers some playable versions of these games. HD is <em>played out</em> -- we're ready for Sub-Standard Definition.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/03/a-megamix-of-minimalist-game-remakes/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A megamix of minimalist game remakes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/03/a-megamix-of-minimalist-game-remakes/">A megamix of minimalist game remakes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Nov 2009 03:00:00 EST. Masaya Matsuura (creator of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/parappa">PaRappa the Rapper</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/major-minors-majestic-march"><em>Major Minor's Majestic March</em></a>) says he and his posse over at NanaOn-Sha are interested in making a music game for Microsoft's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/natal">Project Natal</a>. "We are thinking about ideas," said Matsuura to <a href="http://www.videogamer.com/news/parappa_creator_is_thinking_about_natal_ideas.html">Videogamer.com</a> at the UK Develop Conference. " I think any kind of interaction with a camera will be good for music games, but the important thing will be how we can find the new breed of gameplay."<br /><br />Matsuura thinks he can create something fresh -- something other than the rock genre, which he points out <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero"><em>Guitar Hero</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rock-band"><em>Rock Band</em></a> cover quite well. Instead, he thinks there's room to grow for other sounds: "There is other attractive music, so please try to find another style, another interaction, another gameplay with another type of music." <br /><br />Activision is breaking out with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dj-hero"><em>DJ Hero</em></a>. So, what could Matsuura work on? Wait a minute... <em>breaking</em>. How about a pure break dance title? <em>Baraver the Breakdancing Beaver</em>? No?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/20/parappa-creator-raps-about-natals-musical-possibilities/">PaRappa creator raps about Natal's musical possibilities</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 20 Jul 2009 09:15:00 EST. Your wardrobe could use a bit more gamer chic. One of Japan's more popular clothing brands is introducing a new line of t-shirts in collaboration with a number of gaming companies. The store is offering tees based on <em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em>, <em>Mega-Man</em>, <em>PaRappa the Rapper</em>, <em>LittleBigPlanet</em>, <em>Resident Evil</em> and more. The shirts retail for 1500 yen (about $15) each.<br /><br />The designs are simple, often featuring very subtle references to these gaming franchises . This way, you can make a nerdy statement without actually having to <em>look like one</em>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.offworld.com/2009/04/uniqlo-games-tees-the-rest.html">Offworld</a>]<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ut-japan-game/">UT Japan>Game</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ut-japan-game/#1505433"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/09_057519_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ut-japan-game/#1505432"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/09_057435_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ut-japan-game/#1505431"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/09_057189_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ut-japan-game/#1505430"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/09_056069_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ut-japan-game/#1505429"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/09_056065_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/20/uniqlo-launches-new-line-of-gamer-tees/">Uniqlo launches new line of gamer tees</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 20 Apr 2009 20:45:00 EST. <br />Ever since <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/15/parappa-creator-to-rock-the-wii/">it's been rumored</a>, the whole team has been patiently awaiting <em>PaRappa </em>creator Masaya Matsuura's next project. Once <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/31/parappa-creators-major-minors-majestic-march-revealed/">it was revealed</a>, I found myself puzzled as to what to expect. Would it be as good as <em>PaRappa</em>? Has Matsuura lost it? Well, that confusion is gone now that I've had time to play the game at E3. <br /><br />Is it good? Well, read on and find out!<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/e308-wii-fanboy-leads-the-band-in-major-minors-majestic-march/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E308: Wii Fanboy leads the band in Major Minor's Majestic March</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/e308-wii-fanboy-leads-the-band-in-major-minors-majestic-march/">E308: Wii Fanboy leads the band in Major Minor's Majestic March</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Jul 2008 11:45:00 EST. <br />There are few games with an aesthetic as immediately recognizable as <em>Parappa the Rapper</em>, so our expectations were understandably high when we first read about <em>Parappa</em> designer Masaya Matsuura and <em>Parappa</em> artist Rodney Greenblat's latest collaboration: <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Major-Minors-Majestic-March/">Major Minor's Majestic March</a></em>.<br /><br />Publisher Majesco (enough with the M's!) has released the first batch of screenshots of the Wii-destined marching game and we're not disappointed. While we'll cross the divide that separates Nintendo and Sony handheld fanboys and admit that the <em>Parappa</em> games are great, we're a tad bit upset.<br /><br />As you may recall from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/11/what-is-the-greatest-canine-in-gaming-history/">our original post on this topic</a> of discussion, we were heavily in favor of K.K. Slider. We also considered the dog from <em>Duck Hunt</em>. But, Parappa? Eh, we don't agree. What about you all?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/10/parappa-crowned-greatest-game-canine/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/10/so-who-is-the-greatest-gaming-canine-ever/">So who is the greatest gaming canine ever?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 10 Mar 2008 15:00:00 EST. Following up on their quest to decide the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/30/and-the-greatest-video-game-horse-is/">greatest horse in video game history</a>, the guys and gals of MTV Multiplayer have recently announced the greatest video game dog. And <a href="http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/03/07/and-the-award-for-greatest-video-game-canine-goes-to/">the winner is Parappa</a>, the adorable two-dimensional hip-hop legend, and star of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/parappa"><em>Parappa the Rapper</em></a>. <br /><br />Runner-ups include the ubiquitous zombie dogs from the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil"><em>Resident Evil</em></a> series, the annoying dog that mocks us with his laughter from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/duck-hunt"><em>Duck Hunt</em></a>, Amaterasu from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/okami"><em>Okami</em></a>, and K.K. Slider from <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/animal-crossing">Animal Crossing</a> </em>(though presumably the in-game incarnate, and not that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/06/witness-the-greatest-animal-crossing-cosplay-ever/">creepy real-life version</a>). We're looking forward to seeing which animal MTV sees fit to vote on next. We're hoping for frog, a category clearly dominated by Fred from <em>Blaster Master</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/10/parappa-crowned-greatest-game-canine/">Parappa crowned greatest game canine</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 10 Mar 2008 12:45:00 EST. Tired of searching <a href="http://www.etsy.com">Etsy</a> in vain for fan-made <em>God of War</em> apparel? You're in luck! Sony today announced partnerships with four different clothing and accessory makers to feature the company's biggest franchises on all sorts of shirts and such. IV Gear has a <a href="http://www.ivgear.com/Licenses2-videogames.html">list</a> (shown above) of at least some of the franchises which will be depicted, including <em>God of War</em>, <em>Ratchet &amp; Clank</em>, <em>Resistance: Fall of Man</em>, <em>Heavenly Sword</em> and <em>Little Big Planet</em>. Apparel makers Fortune Fashions, Bioworld and MJC will also put the games' logos and character on everything from hoodies to handbags.<br /><br />"PlayStation is an extremely strong and well-known brand" Shelly Gayner, Director of Licensing, SCEA, said in a press release "We feel that this is a great opportunity for us to satiate our core fans and extend and capitalize on PlayStation name recognition by creating a new line of apparel in connection with the PlayStation brands and our top franchise titles." Memo to Sony: If you really want to satiate the fanboy audience, you'll put <a href="http://www.organicmetal.co.uk/MVGC/sofia/sofia.htm">Sofia</a> from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_Arena_Toshinden"><em>Battle Arena Toshinden</em></a> on a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2004/08/09/doa-body-pillow-for-those-lonely-nights/">body pillow</a>. When we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/31/parappa-creators-bringing-marching-band-game-to-wii/">first heard</a> about <em>Major Minor's Majestic March</em>, we, much like you, were confused. We had never <em>asked</em> for a game about a marching band, we hadn't ever really thought about it. But, as the game was developed by Parappa masterminds Masaya Matsuura and Rodney Greenblat, we had to, in accordance with federal law, believe. Now, after reading <a href="http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/levelup/archive/2008/02/08/exclusive-level-up-interview-with-masaya-matsuura.aspx">Newsweek's feature on the game</a>, we're officially intrigued for reasons other than its pedigree.<br /><br />You'll want to read the full piece, but we're interested in the way that, serving as the band's drum major, you'll be able to not only set the pace of the music but dynamically effect it. Other interesting nuggets from the interview include the fact that Matsuura is happy he doesn't know much about Nintendo's upcoming <em>Wii Music</em>, as well as his thoughts on the <em>Guitar Hero </em>series. (Spoiler alert: They need more Insane Clown Posse.)<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/08/newsweek-gets-the-skinny-on-major-minors-majestic-march/">Newsweek gets the skinny on Major Minor's Majestic March</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 08 Feb 2008 09:40:00 EST. We hope you don't mind trading a rapping puppy for a tuba-playing pig. The first information and character art from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Majesco/">Majesco</a>'s new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/10/majesco-believes-publishing-new-nanaon-sha-game/">collaboration</a> between <em>Parappa</em> creators <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/29/parappa-creator-ds-software-bubble-has-burst/">Masaya Matsuura</a> and <a href="http://www.whimsyload.com/">Rodney Alan Greenblat</a> has been released. The game is called <em>Major Minor's Majestic March</em> and takes place in a town full of marching bands. As Major Mike Minor, your job is to use your "special" bandleader's baton (the Wiimote, obviously) not only to keep the rhythm of your marching band, but to attract new players into it, and even pick up items.<br /><br />The sound of your band (as it plays new arrangements of over 30 well-known marches) changes as the instrumentalists following you change. Oh, and <span style="font-style: italic;">of course</span> the game is, in true Greenblat style, really cute. We'd like to direct you to our gallery featuring the first character art!<br />
<br /><br />[Via GamesPress]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/31/parappa-creators-major-minors-majestic-march-revealed/">Parappa creators' Major Minor's Majestic March revealed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 31 Jan 2008 12:45:00 EST. Yeah, yeah, we're intrigued by the possibilities of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/11/todays-more-than-tech-demo-video-wii-music/"><em>Wii Music</em></a> but, like you, we're disappointed by that game's apparent lack of marching! Someone at Majesco apparently feels the same way, because the company today <a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=109&amp;STORY=/www/story/01-31-2008/0004746887&amp;EDATE=">announced</a> <em>Major Minor's Majestic March</em> for the Wii.<br /><br />Featuring the talents of <em>Parappa the Rapper</em> designer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Masaya+Matsuura/">Masaya Matsuura</a> and artist <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rodney_Alan_Greenblat">Rodney Greenblat</a>, the game will ask players to use the Wii remote to "keep tempo, recruit new band members and pick up valuable items." The release promises eight "whimsical" locations, a "dynamic procession" of up to 15 instruments and 25 "popular marching band songs." We hope they can secure the rights to some of the hits from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/01/the-onion-sousaphone-hero-not-catching-on/"><em>Sousaphone Hero</em></a>. The promise of conducting our own version of "Stars and Stripes Forever" by Holiday 2008 is just too delicious to contemplate.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/major-minors-majestic-march/">Major Minor's Majestic March</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/major-minors-majestic-march/#880442"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/major-minors-2-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/major-minors-majestic-march/#880441"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/major-minors-1-17_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/major-minors-majestic-march/#880440"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/major-minors-1-14_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/major-minors-majestic-march/#880439"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/major-minors-1-13_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/major-minors-majestic-march/#880438"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/major-minors-1-12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/31/parappa-creators-bringing-marching-band-game-to-wii/">Parappa creators bringing 'Major Minor's Majestic March' to Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 31 Jan 2008 11:45:00 EST. It's, like, <em>the law</em>. <br /><br />Then again, even <em>we </em>find his opinion on the DS's future in Japan a little hard to swallow. When asked by <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3521/matsuura_got_rhythm_the_state_of_.php?page=5">Gamasutra</a> how long he thought the DS and Wii would remain popular in Japan, Matsuura suggested that "Some people have said already that the DS software's bubble has burst."<br /><br />Matsuura then discussed how one company sold 200,000 copies of a DS <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/training">training</a> game, only to make a sequel that shifted 8,000 units. "These kind of things are going to happen," he concluded. Man, tell that to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/another-week-in-japan/">sales figures</a>, Masaya.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/29/parappa-creator-ds-software-bubble-has-burst/">PaRappa creator: 'DS software bubble has burst'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 29 Jan 2008 14:15:00 EST. What inspired the design of music gaming's premiere mascot? Rodney Greenblat, famed artist and creator of the PaRappa character explains: "In the case of PaRappa they wanted a character that was trustworthy, loyal, hardworking, romantic and a little insecure. That made me think of a dog. I made several sketches of dog rapper characters. We all worked together to pick the best design." Thinking back about the game's inspirational "you gotta believe" mantra, it's clear that Greenbalt's design really works.<br /><br />Greenbalt reveals other details in a lengthy interview at the <a href="http://uk.playstation.com/home/news/articles/detail/item74117/">PlayStation website</a>.<br /><br />[Thanks, Random!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/13/rodney-greenblat-reveals-his-inspiration-for-parappa/">Rodney Greenblat reveals his inspiration for PaRappa</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 13 Aug 2007 22:00:00 EST. Sony asked <em>PaRappa</em> fans to submit videos of their performances for a chance to win a trip to Penny Acade Expo. Well, it looks like one team rose above the rest. Adam S (and his daughter?) took home the gold with their cheap cake rap. We all have fond memories of <em>PaRappa the Rapper</em> when he first arrived on PlayStation 1 a decade ago. Now, our beloved rapping puppy is back on the PSP. However, nostalgia doesn't make a good game. Although <em>PaRappa</em> fathered the modern music game genre, it simply doesn't offer enough content or gameplay to compete with modern games.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/parappa-the-rapper/">PaRappa the Rapper</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/parappa-the-rapper/#292846"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/playstation.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/win_end_level_6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/parappa-the-rapper/#292845"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/playstation.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/win_end_level_5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/parappa-the-rapper/#292844"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/playstation.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/losing_end_level_six_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/parappa-the-rapper/#292843"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/playstation.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/lose_end_level_five_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/parappa-the-rapper/#292840"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/playstation.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/win_end_level_4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/30/psp-fanboy-review-parappa-the-rapper/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PSP Fanboy review: PaRappa the Rapper</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/30/psp-fanboy-review-parappa-the-rapper/">PSP Fanboy review: PaRappa the Rapper</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 Jul 2007 13:00:00 EST. <em>PaRappa the Rapper</em> used to be the coolest kid on the block when he came out ten years ago. Although this game was the pioneer of a genre ten years ago, our recent hands-on with the upcoming PSP version has left us underwhelmed. <em>PaRappa</em> is back, but he's just not as cool as you remember him. Like parachute pants, <em>PaRappa</em> hasn't aged very well.<br /><br />The greatest flaw we see with the game so far is its awkward input mechanism. Sure, music games have always been about pressing buttons at the right time. The problem with <em>PaRappa</em> is that its hard to tell if you're doing well or not ... until it's too late. In <em>Dance Dance Revolution</em>, for example, one would receive a confirmation of a "Great!" or a "Bad" immediately after pressing the button. Without an instant response, its hard to tell how you're performing ... and how to improve yourself.<br /><br />Also, navigating the menus is a chore, and it's far from intuitive. We're also disappointed to see that the cinematic sequences in the game are bordered horribly: where's our full-screen video? There's still a lot of potential in the game: the game is charming, moves at a brisk pace, and the downloadable content will be available immediately at game's launch. We still have to play through the game some more, but our initial impressions are far from glowing. Stay tuned for more. Until then, check out new images in our gallery.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/parappa-the-rapper/">PaRappa the Rapper</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/parappa-the-rapper/#292846"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/playstation.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/win_end_level_6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/parappa-the-rapper/#292845"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/playstation.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/win_end_level_5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/parappa-the-rapper/#292844"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/playstation.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/losing_end_level_six_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/parappa-the-rapper/#292843"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/playstation.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/lose_end_level_five_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/parappa-the-rapper/#292840"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/playstation.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/win_end_level_4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/29/psp-fanboy-hands-on-parappa-the-rapper/">PSP Fanboy hands-on: PaRappa the Rapper</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 29 Jun 2007 20:00:00 EST. U Gotta Believe!<br /><br />Sony is hosting a new contest, encouraging wannabe rappers to perform their best <em>PaRappa</em> rap. It just takes some ambition, a camera, and some YouTube know-how to enter. Choose one of three songs provided on Sony's <a href="http://www.us.playstation.com/EP/Promotions/280?DCMP=ILC-RSS-Events">official contest page</a>, and swallow your pride.<br /><br />There are some awesome prizes: <em>PaRappa</em> PSP skins, <em>PaRappa</em> PSP charms, PaRappa's signature beanie and a copy of the game. Want this ill-lookin' <em>PaRappa the Rapper</em> tee? We sure do. To help promote the upcoming PSP version, Sony has contracted <a href="http://www.paulfrank.com/">Paul Frank Industries</a> and PaRappa's "co-creator and artist", Rodney Alan Greenblat, to create a limited edition t-shirt. The shirt will display Paul Frank's signature character Julius and Sony's adorable PaRappa the Rapper. According to <a href="http://www.us.playstation.com/EP/Promotions/278?DCMP=ILC-RSS-Events">Sony</a>, there will be several PaRappa promotions throughout the summer: both online and at numerous PlayStation promotional events including Wizard World, ComiCon, LollaPalooza, PAX and more.<br /><br />We begged Sony to give us a couple of shirts to give away to our readers. Let's hope they've heard our pleas.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/21/limited-edition-parappa-tee-by-paul-frank/">Limited edition PaRappa tee by Paul Frank</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 Jun 2007 14:00:00 EST. Most prominent is that <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=PaRappa+the+Rapper">PaRappa</a> the Rapper 3</em> is coming to PlayStation 3, and "none of the that ported PSP nonsense."<br /><br />Another eye-catcher is that <em>Silent Hill 5</em> is being developed "by a US team" for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The PSP <em>Silent Hill Origins</em> is currently in development by US-based Climax Group. The third teaser from 1UP is more of a no-brainer: "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ElectronicArts/">Electronic Arts</a> isn't happy <em>just</em> controlling the NFL -- they want the MLB and NBA, too." We never really thought EA would stop until they had every sport from Football to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Segway_Polo">Segway polo</a> under their belt.<br /><br />Joystiq's Kyle Orland <a href="http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/media/?id=14936">calculated</a> that Quartermann's rumors "are just as likely to be true as they are false," so flip a coin for <em>Silent Hill</em> 5 and <em>PaRappa 3.</em> Ya <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/01/25/parappa-the-rapper-live-performance/">gotta believe</a>!<br /> <small>

Sony Gamer's Day was filled with tons of goodies, such as the new PSP version of <em>PaRappa the Rapper</em>. There isn't much new to see here, considering its simply a port of a PS1 classic. Regardless, feel free to check out some screens in our new gallery below.<br /><br />The game hits PSP systems this July.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/parappa-the-rapper/">PaRappa the Rapper</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/parappa-the-rapper/#292846"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/playstation.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/win_end_level_6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/parappa-the-rapper/#292845"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/playstation.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/win_end_level_5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/parappa-the-rapper/#292844"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/playstation.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/losing_end_level_six_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/parappa-the-rapper/#292843"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/playstation.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/lose_end_level_five_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/parappa-the-rapper/#292840"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/playstation.joystiq.com/media/2007/06/win_end_level_4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/17/sgd-07-parappa-the-rapper/">SGD '07: PaRappa the Rapper</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 May 2007 03:01:00 EST. <div align="left">In what's either a stunning triumph of naivet&eacute; or a startling display of practical knowledge, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/30/parappa-battles-his-way-to-american-psps-july-07/">Parappa the Rapper</a></em> creator, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/01/16/parappa-creator-introduces-book-to-japan/">Masaya Matsuura</a>, has <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=25008">opined</a> that the PlayStation 3's sluggish sales <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/japanesehardwaresales">in Japan</a> are largely to blame on its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/30/the-revised-next-gen-console-size-comparisons/">physical size</a>. Speaking to GamesIndustry.Biz at the Nordic Game Conference (they have those, you know), Matsuura describes Sony's black behemoth as being "too big for the Japanese." <br /></div>
</div>
<br />It's not the only technological powerhouse having trouble finding a home -- the Xbox 360's critical flaw is "not the size of the hardware but of the AC adapter." Matsuura's obsession with size doesn't extend to his Wii though, as he's currently planning a title for Nintendo's comparatively diminutive box. He calls it a "very good piece of hardware," noting that the unique controls pose quite a challenge from the designer's point of view. He confidently asserts that development on the game begins "soon,maybe."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/15/parappa-designer-raps-ps3-for-being-too-big-plans-wii-game/">Parappa designer raps PS3 for being 'too big', plans Wii game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 May 2007 23:00:00 EST. We couldn't be happier to inform you of this news, as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PaRappa_the_Rapper"><em>PaRappa the Rapper</em></a> was one sweet piece of gaming. Why not go with the PS3 for your new project though? "It's too big for the Japanese."<br /><br />OK, so the physical size of the console is preventing the Japanese from enjoying it? Sure, we'll go with it (we thought it was the price tag). So, the Wii should be just right? "Wii is a very good piece of hardware. Many talented people from Nintendo make great ideas for game hardware, of course. Already I've been starting to think about Wii software, but it's very hard sometimes. <p> If you haven't noticed, the PSP Fanboy team is totally "t3h b145!!!1" We've been bashing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/15/crazy-taxi-still-looks-crazy-bad/"><em>Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars</em></a> for its sloppy Dreamcast-era graphics. However, we've been going totally gaga for the barely enhanced <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/01/a-brief-history-of-parappa-the-rapper-with-screenshots/"><em>PaRappa the Rapper</em></a>. Isn't that unfair? We're going to let you, the PSP Fanboy reader, tell us which of these hotly anticipated PSP ports we should be more excited for. Just check out the videos after the cut, and tell us which one you want more. If you're digging both of them, feel free to vote for both. Of course, if you're feeling particularly jaded today, you can also admit that maybe we shouldn't get so excited over ports--don't we have too many already?</p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/03/battle-of-the-ports-parappa-versus-crazy-taxi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Battle of the ports: PaRappa versus Crazy Taxi</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/03/battle-of-the-ports-parappa-versus-crazy-taxi/">Battle of the ports: PaRappa versus Crazy Taxi</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 03 May 2007 15:30:00 EST. <span style="font-style: italic;">PaRappa the Rapper</span> is largely accredited as the first modern rhythm game. More than ten years after its first release on PS1, gamers will be able to relive the game on PSP. In light of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/30/parappa-heads-to-us-for-psp-remake/">US announcement</a>, we wanted to take a brief look into the history of the game, and offer you some new screenshots (after the break).<br /><br />The game was developed by <a href="http://www.nanaon-sha.com/">NanaOn-Sha</a> (roughly translated as Seventh Sound Company), and has seen release in over 70 countries. The story of the rapping dog that "gotta believe" became so popular that the series branched off into new areas. For example, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/11/happy-happy-old-japanese-mcdonalds-ads/">McDonald's promotions</a>. It eventually transformed into a 30-episode <a href="http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=1950">anime series</a> in 2001. The franchise grew with the eventual sequels, <a href="http://www.us.playstation.com/PS2/Games/PaRappa_the_Rapper_2/OGS/parappa1024_win.html"><span style="font-style: italic;">PaRappa the Rapper 2</span></a> and <span style="font-style: italic;">Um Jammer Lammy</span>.<br /><br />Its initial release was met with nearly universal <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/psx/parappatherapper">critical acclaim</a>. <a href="http://www.whimsyload.com/">Rodney Alan Greenblat</a>, a popular artist in Japan, created illustrations that came to life in a way the gaming world had never seen before. The music was also unlike anything the gaming world had experienced. It wasn't long before it built a dedicated <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/14/live-action-chickens-rap-from-parappa/">fan community</a>. We hope the upcoming PSP version will revive the long-dormant franchise. Isn't it time for an entirely new addition to this series?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/01/a-brief-history-of-parappa-the-rapper-with-screenshots/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A brief history of PaRappa the Rapper (with screenshots)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/01/a-brief-history-of-parappa-the-rapper-with-screenshots/">A brief history of PaRappa the Rapper (with screenshots)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 May 2007 13:00:00 EST. Ready to rap? Good. <em>PaRappa the Rapper</em> is heading to American PSP systems this July, ten years after the release of the original. This remake features all the characters, levels and songs from the original and adds a slew of new wireless options. According to the press release, players can "go head-to-head in ad-hoc battles; wirelessly share a demo level through Game Share; and use the PSP Infrastructure Mode to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/21/parappa-to-feature-downloadable-music-but-no-new-levels/">download eight additional playable remixes</a> for players to rap along to."<br /><br />"Bringing <em>PaRappa The Rapper</em> to PSP allows true PlayStation fans to re-connect with this timeless classic," said John Koller, Senior Marketing Manager, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "This also introduces the beloved PaRappa and his cast of colorful friends to a new generation of fans and potential hip-hop stars on the move."<br /><br />For those unaware, <em>PaRappa</em> is considered a pioneer in music games, launching the genre to the mainstream. With <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/gitaroo-man/"><em>Gitaroo-Man Lives!</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/dj-max/"><em>DJ Max Portable</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/dj-max/"><em>beaterator</em></a>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/parappa-the-rapper/"><em>PaRappa</em></a> all available on one console, PSP is quickly becoming the gaming machine for music lovers.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/30/parappa-heads-to-us-for-psp-remake/">PaRappa heads to US for PSP remake</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 Apr 2007 11:55:00 EST. <div align="left">We knew we just had to believe. Yes, it's the same PSP port that we got our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/24/joystiq-hands-on-parappa-the-rapper-psp/">hands-on</a> at the Tokyo Game Show last September, which means the same levels, same jams, and the same kooky characters (yeah, we're talking about you Chop Chop Master Onion) as the 1997 PSone original.<br /><br />But Sony isn't about to play you like that, they've gone and added some juicy PSP features to the rhythm gaming OG: four-player head-to-head rap battles (oh snap!); wirelessly share a demo level (Instructor Mooselini's rap please); and use infrastructure mode to nab eight additional playable remixes. No <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Game3.0/">Game 3.0</a>-style user remixes, or are we saving that action for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/06/could-beats-change-the-way-you-play-psp/">Beats</a>?<br /><br /><em>PaRappa</em> em-eye-eckses flour into the bowl on North American PSPs this July.<em> You gotta believe! </em></div>

<br />Japan was treated to a special PSP version of the classic PS1 music game, <em>PaRappa the Rapper</em> a while back. Anreas Wieslander and his gang have performed a live action version of the "Chicken's Rap." Once you watch it, you'll also want to crack, crack, crack the egg into a bowl.<br /><br />The rapping grooves of these white kids have got me in the mood for some Pa-Rapping. Unfortunately, SCEA has not announced an American release for the game. Until then, interested importers can check out <a href="http://www.play-asia.com/SOap-23-83-57ld-71-9f-77-1-49-en-15-parappa-84-j-70-1mig.html">Play-Asia</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/14/live-action-chickens-rap-from-parappa/">Live action Chicken's Rap from PaRappa</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 14 Feb 2007 05:00:00 EST. Sony's latest firmware is aimed solely at one game: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/parappa-the-rapper/"><em>PaRappa the Rapper</em></a>, which is available <a href="http://global.yesasia.com/assocred.asp?DRAZHJTP+http://us.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/code-j/section-games/pid-1004540737/">in Japan only</a>. Apparently, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/21/parappa-to-feature-downloadable-music-but-no-new-levels/">downloadable levels</a> simply don't work in 3.01 or 3.0, meaning this firmware upgrade is more of a patch than anything else.<br /><br />But what's with this recent slew of quick firmware turnarounds to fix broken games? 3.02 follows the footsteps of firmware 3.01, which fixed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/24/3-01-update-blame-jeanne-darc/">game performance in <em>Jeanne d'Arc</em></a>. Of course, considering how neither of these games are available anywhere but Japan, most of you probably don't need to update your firmware at all.<br /><br />[Thanks, <a href="http://psp-vault.com/">JustEaton</a>! Many have questioned Sony's decision to simply make an updated port and put it on UMD, when a game like <em>PaRappa</em> would be an ideal candidate for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psone">PSone emulation</a>. <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/index.php/2006/10/18/new-additions-in-parappa-the-rapper-psp/">Siliconera</a> reports that the game will offer <em>something</em> new for PSP owners: the ability to download new songs through Infrastructure mode. Strangely, the new songs will not affect the gameplay in any way: the levels and corresponding button presses will not change when you download these songs. Gyuh? Sounds strange. Hopefully, Sony's been hiding something from us. The game hits Japan on <a href="http://global.yesasia.com/assocred.asp?DRAZHJTP+http://us.yesasia.com/en/PrdDept.aspx/code-j/section-games/pid-1004540737/">December 7th</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/21/parappa-to-feature-downloadable-music-but-no-new-levels/">PaRappa to feature downloadable music, but no new levels</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 21 Oct 2006 14:15:00 EST.
