Do you hear that? It's the pata pata of tiny feet, vibrantly dancing along a 2D plane. It's not just the mice you have running around your apartment (you might wanna clean up, amigo), it's a third Patapon game. Sony announced the game alongside the news that 70 PSP games will be released "between now and December."

All pons aside, we're thrilled to hear about another Patapon title. And hey, we'd love to get our hands on it sooner than later, Sony. You meant December 1, right?

As tends to happen around this time of year, another countdown site has popped up, this one on the Japanese PlayStation site. It's counting down to the start of a beta test for ... something, with the countdown against a black background, with some thunder noises for ambiance.

Well, not just for ambience. The thunder accompanies a faint lightning effect, which illuminates a faint Patapon-esque scene in the background (above). But why would a new Patapon game need a beta test? What if it featured (gasp) online multiplayer? You'd be all pata pata and your friend would be like pon pon and it would be awesome. We'll find out in around five days!

Amazon is just laying on the PlayStation sales today, with Patapon 2 being slashed to a measly $13.98. Okay, so it's not like Patapon 2 was terribly expensive in the first place, but come on, $14! For the price of two delicious hamburger combos, you could be playing this year's premiere drum-sequence-battle game. With the money you save off the regular $20 price tag, you could still buy one hamburger combo and you'd have something to play after lunch.

Right there? That's a win-win.

It's one of the most popular titles on that platform and is quite a unique and engaging experience. But, what if you're a DS owner; how will you get in on the action? Well, seeing as Patapon is a first-party Sony title, you won't ever see it on DS ... not without the help of the homebrew community, anyhow.

Apparently, someone called E-eragon is working on a DS version of Patapon, looking to upgrade the original title to include stylus controls. Tiny Cartridge discovered a clip of E-eragon's work (posted after the break), and though it doesn't look as smooth as the original, it is by far a rather good-looking copy. Check out the game before Sony slams the law book on this one.

Patapon 2 is finally coming to the PSP in North America. While associate producer Chris Hinojosa-Miranda couldn't precisely explain why the title has taken so long to reach its final destination, he did say that the added time provided more focus on localization and translation. (Even still, we manged to spot a few lingering instances of "Engrish.")

Hinojosa-Miranda told us that the development team continues to get requests for a downloadable PS3 version of Patapon that features online modes, which he says the studio is "listening to." The team is also looking at licensing out more of those popular Patapon plush dolls (in case you missed the first batch). Will there be a Patapon 3? "There's such a critical love for Patapon, the characters, the story overall, and the music especially ... there's a good chance that the franchise will continue," Hinojosa-Miranda suspects.

Yes, it's true. Patapon 2 won't be available on UMD when it arrives in America. Instead, it'll be a PlayStation Store exclusive title. This digital distribution experiment won't avoid retail altogether, as you'll still be able to buy Patapon 2 in stores. The boxed package will include a printed manual and a voucher to download Patapon 2 off the PlayStation Store. Yes, you'll need a Memory Stick, and yes, you'll need a wi-fi connection (or a PS3 connected to the internet).

It's unclear how mainstream consumers will respond to this change. However, we're all for it -- being able to legally download games mixes the convenience of Memory Stick gaming with developers earning money to pay their bills. All in all, it's a win-win.

An ArsTechnica "source" -- who has apparently given the site solid intel in the past -- claims Patapon 2 won't have a physical, UMD-based existence when it releases May 5. The game will allegedly be sold on the PSN for $15, with the retail copy, which will be nothing but a PSN redemption code, priced at $20. Customers will also apparently be able to purchase the game through the websites of "certain retailers."

If true, this UMD-less Patapon sequel's invasion appears to be a test run, for not only for digital distribution, but for Dave Perry's anti-UMD PSP2. We've contacted Sony for comment and will update if we hear anything.

Update: Sony's senior director of corporate communications sent us the following statement: "We're considering a digital only format for the Patapon 2 release as a one time test case as we continue to explore consumer preferences for digital content. The downloadable game will be available on May 5th at both retail and via the PlayStation Store. We remain focused on providing superior games and entertainment experiences in both the UMD and digital formats and are working closely with our partners to deliver the best PSP line up in our history. "

Sony and Spil games have released an official Patapon 2 promotional Flash game for PCs and Macs. The pint- shot glass-sized Patapon experience isn't necessarily for gods of the beat, but it's a nice introduction to the series for those who've never played the game -- and shame on you, if that's the case.

Players are scored and unlock images on the three levels in the Flash game, which supposedly allows them to put together their own Patapon-themed wallpapers. We couldn't get that feature to work, but perhaps it's still having the gremlins worked out. The Patapon Flash game is available March 9-16, so "pata-pata-pata-pon" (rush) and "pon-pon-pata-pon" (attack) it while you still can.

The company has done it for Resistance Retribution on PSP and Killzone 2 on PS3, and next up is Patapon 2.

Gamestop's website reveals a $20 price tag for the upcoming sequel and a release date of 5/5/09. According to the site, those who pre-order the game will be able to download a demo, available starting March 13th. Those who played the original Patapon won't really need to grab this demo -- the first game is, essentially, a demo of the sequel.

We're not exactly sure why SCEA is taking so long in bringing these PSP games over to America. A new fact sheet for the game revealed a "release date" of sorts for the upcoming sequel: Spring/Summer. The game, which has been available in Japan since late last year, more than doubles the amount of content to play with. New multiplayer modes add even more depth to the game.

SCEA has released brand new screenshots and the official box art (above). Considering how good the original Patapon was, we're sure the wait for the sequel will be worth it.

Gamer tattoos are not that much of a new thing, but we like highlighting some of the more unique and amusing kinds of gaming-related skin art. This piece in particular portrays the rhythmically-obsessed Patapons marching off to war. Fan Masatomo Ueda had this tat etched upon his arm and chest, and judging by the expression on his face he seems really freaked out by the little dudes and their spear carrying ways. Oh uh, Masa, just make sure you steer clear from drum beats or else those Patapons will do you in.

Spike TV's 2008 Video Game Awards will be kicking off next month and the nominees and categories have all been set in place. Both PSP-exclusive titles God of War: Chains of Olympus and Patapon have been nominated for Best Handheld Game. Unfortunately, that's all these two have been nominated for. There can only be one winner and it's going to be a tough call between these two -- oh, yes, and the other nominees, of course. How big is Patapon 2? Well, take the original game ... and then multiply it by two. The upcoming PSP-exclusive sequel will feature a staggering amount of content which makes the original seem rather diminutive. While the first featured 37 levels, Patapon 2 Don Chaka will feature over 80. There were 187 weapons and items in the original -- and over 500 in the new game. Not only that, Patapon 2 will also feature a new multiplayer mode.

While critics and fans have embraced Patapon's unique gameplay, the new content expansion should make the sequel much more appealing to newcomers and veterans alike. The core gameplay remains largely untouched -- each of the face buttons represents a certain sound, and pressing button combinations to the beat will command the Patapon to march, retreat and attack. However, they've added a new twist to the formula. Enter: the Hero Patapon.

Players wanted a more personal interaction with their Patapon. With the Hero Patapon, they'll get just that. The Hero has an expanded set of moves and greater HP, making it far deadlier than the standard Patapon. While Patapon were fairly expendable in the original, players will want the Hero to stay alive. As it can be named by the player, many may think of it as their own unique "pet" in the game.

Is there a title more apt than Patapon 2? Perhaps not. The upcoming sequel to the critically acclaimed PSP exclusive will be double the size of the original, according to Famitsu (via PSPHyper). The number of stages to be found in the upcoming sequel is twice that of the first title, giving players a lot more to play. In addition, the story will be fleshed out even more, with hero Patapon getting their own special abilities throughout the adventure.

Although the gameplay concept was simple, it was very easy to lose the rhythm and meet one's doom in the original. Thankfully, the sequel will be a bit more accessible to players, as it will also indicate when a player is losing the beat. With more content, more enemies, more abilities, and multiplayer, it looks like there's a lot to be excited about when Patapon 2 releases in Japan later this year.

Patapon 2 has been announced for a Japanese Winter 2008 release, and the biggest new feature for the game is the four player ad hoc. You can see that multiplayer aspect in the screen above where the objective of the mode is to charge forward together with a Faberge egg, all the while fighting enemies. Sounds interesting. The original Patapon was critically acclaimed for its simple, endearing, and surprisingly deep design. It shouldn't surprise anyone that the PSP exclusive music game is getting a sequel. The big draw this time? Ad-hoc multiplayer for four players. Hiroyuki Kotani explains to Famitsu (via 1UP) that there's a lot more to look forward to this time besides multiplayer. "There are lots more bosses and midboss-type enemies this time. We've got about double the amount of content to explore, just in terms of the number of stages alone. Add the customization options to that, and to be honest, you may never get to fully explore every bit of it."

The game is being prepped for a winter release in Japan. Undoubtedly, the US will also get its own version some time in the future as well. Hopefully, we'll also be able to see more of Patapon 2 at E3 next week.

The latest issue of Famitsu (via PSPHype) reveals a sequel to Patapon is in the works and coming to Japanese PSPs this Winter (no US or Europe release mentioned). The game is being developed by Pyramid Studios, who made the previous game and LocoRoco. The magazine also has a two-page spread of LocoRoco 2, although gives no release date for any region. No matter how many times you shout pata-pata-pata-pon, the game won't get here any faster.

The teams behind the creative PSP games, Patapon and echochrome, will make an appearance at this year's Develop conference in July. Atsushi Li, director of Pyramid and Junichi Yoshizama, associate producer of SCE Worldwide Studios will discuss the tribal music game Patapon. Jun Fujiki and Tatsuya Suzuki will speak about the mind-bending echochrome.

"We are privileged to welcome Ii-san, Yoshizawa-san, Fujiki-san and Suzuki-san to the Develop Conference and are thrilled that we can offer our delegates the opportunity to be inspired by what can only be described as some of the most creative video games designers on the planet," said managing director of Tandem Events, Andy Lane.

Patapon has managed to find its way into the hearts of many PSP gamers. Already, the game has a legion of dedicated fans, and they're pouring their love into some clever fan art. Benny T. sent us some of his art: a vicious reinterpretation of the musical warriors. Considering how blood-thirty these critters actually are, we find these drawings to be a rather accurate representation of the Patapon's true nature.

Ready the troops, it's time to march (pata-pata-pata-pon) into battle (pon-pon-pata-pon) with Patapon, a delightful rhythm-based action/strategy game standing proud and alone in a new genre. Patapon is another jewel in the ever-increasing library of notable games for the PSP and at only $20 you shouldn't even bother reading the reviews below -- just go get it! Pata-pata-pata-pon!
  • IGN (92/100): "While LocoRoco appeared to have the cuteness crown with enjoyable play for the PSP, it looks like it will have to move over - the time for Patapon has come. If you own a PSP, make sure you go to the stores and you get a copy of this game. Your game collection will thank you, and you won't be disappointed."
  • 1UP (90/100): "Patapon poses a serious challenge over its 15 hours (some arcane objectives and explanations don't help); it's not very portable (no pausing, headphones required), and some players won't enjoy the backtracking necessary to buff up their army or the unforgiving economy of the collectibles (you'll often find yourself with far too many items and not enough ka-ching). But it atones for its faults with understated strategic depth, an astounding sense of reward (both literal and whimsical), and an inspired difficulty curve that sticks with you to the end."
  • EuroGamer (80/100): "While Patapon has got the same quirky sense of style and visual charm as [LocoRoco], it doesn't offer the same easy breezy gameplay. According to EGM's Quartermann, their top guy for all things rumorlicious, something "Patapon-related" will be popping up on the PlayStation Network. It seems that this unique rhythm game might actually be getting some sort of spin-off.

Patapon has barely just been released in the west and already we're hearing rumblings of a sequel or a spin-off. Hey, we're not complaining; we're just a little surprised. It would be nice to have another Patapon game, little eye people and all.

If there is one genre that has really flourished on the PSP, it would be rhythm games. Titles like Lumines, beats, Parappa the Rapper, and Gitaroo Man have made Sony's handheld a must-have for any fans of the rhythm genre. And while all those games were fantastic titles, Pyramid's most recent PSP title, Patapon, manages to blows them all away with some of the most unique rhythm-based gameplay you'll ever experience.

Combining gameplay from a wide swath of genres, developers Pyramid managed to create a game that is part rhythm-based, part RPG, and part RTS. It's not always easy for developers to successfully combine genres to create a greater whole, but Pyramid absolutely nailed it with Patapon. The resulting gameplay makes Patapon one of the most unique titles to come along in years, on any system -- not just the PSP.

You play the roll of a long missing deity to a tribe of big-eyed warriors, called Patapons, who have been banished from their land and have lost the will to fight. In order to help the Patapons regain their former glory and achieve their final hope of seeing the mysterious 'it' at the end of the world, they need you and your mighty war drums to whip them into shape and get them motivated for some serious combat.
