Anderson, director of the first <em>Resident Evil</em> movie and the upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-retribution"><em>Resident Evil Retribution</em></a>, offered the first hints of a movie based on another Capcom megahit franchise: Monster Hunter.<br /><br />In an interview with <a href="http://www.cinematoday.jp/page/N0045882">Cinema Today</a>, Anderson was asked what game he'd like to make a movie about next. "Recently, I've been loving Monster Hunter," he said (translated from Japanese by <a href="http://andriasang.com/con2n3/monster_hunter_movie/">Andriasang</a>). "A film conversion is currently in planning." His brief response leaves many unanswered questions, like whether this is his own plan or an official studio decision, whether Capcom is involved yet, and whether Anderson is actually involved or if this is simply information he has about a movie progressing without him<br /><br />What we do know is that if he is involved, Milla Jovovich will be hunting monsters.<br /><br />[Image: <em>Monster Hunter 4</em>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/11/resident-evil-movie-director-monster-hunter-movie-planned/">Resident Evil movie director: Monster Hunter movie planned</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 11 Sep 2012 14:00:00 EST. If you're anxiously awaiting the next Paul W.S. Anderson <em>Resident Evil joint</em>, we've got to ask: "<em>Why?</em>" We can't imagine anyone is dying to see <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1tRU1fsU_Y">another one of these trainwrecks</a> (in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/09/3d-effects-written-into-resident-evil-afterlife-script/">3D</a> again, no less!), but if you are, some new details on <a href="http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/25774">Bloody Disgusting</a> may interest you. Milla Jovovich will reprise her role as Alice in the next film, which now has an official title: <em>Resident Evil: Retribution.</em> Her husband, Paul W.S. Anderson, will once again direct.</p>
<p>
	<em>Resident Evil: Retribution</em> currently has a tentative release date of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/04/fifth-resident-evil-movie-in-the-works-scheduled-for-2012/">September 14, 2012</a>. Sienna Guillory, who played Jill Valentine in the second film (and made an appearance in the last movie), will return, she has said <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/guillorybe/status/48883036741320705">on Twitter</a> -- though BD says that role is being recast. Also, according to BD, Barry Burton and Leon S. Kennedy will both make appearances in <em>Retribution</em>.<br />
	<br />
	Filming for <em>Resident Evil: Retribution</em> will begin in October.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/10/resident-evil-retribution-brings-back-alice-adds-barry-and-leo/">Resident Evil: Retribution brings back Alice, adds Barry and Leon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 10 Aug 2011 22:00:00 EST. Paul W.S. Anderson's latest installment in the <em>Resident Evil</em> film franchise, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-afterlife">subtitled <em>Afterlife</em></a> (or in most technologically-endowed theaters, <em>Afterlife 3D</em>), took home top honors in last weekend's box office ranking. What does this mean? Well, it means we're angry at a lot of America for not going to see <em>Machete</em> -- but, according to lead actress Milla Jovovich, it also means we can expect to see yet another movie chronicling Alice's beef with the Umbrella Corporation.<br />
<br />
"This new Resident Evil is the first one to ever open at No. 1 worldwide," Jovovich recently <a href="http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2010/09/milla_jovovich_were_definitely.html">told New York magazine</a>. "It's the biggest movie in the franchise. So we're definitely going to make another one." She goes on to ask that fans of the series send suggestions for the next film to <a href="http://twitter.com/millajovovich">her Twitter page</a>, which also contains much needed, step-by-step instructions on how to properly pronounce her name. Thanks, Milla!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/14/jovovich-another-resident-evil-movie-is-definitely-coming/">Jovovich: Another Resident Evil movie is 'definitely' coming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Sep 2010 18:00:00 EST. It seems that the combination of 3D technology, video game inspiration and the acting chops of Milo Jovonovich ... Milli Jovovonich ... <em>that lady from The Fifth Element</em> proved undeniable for moviegoers this past weekend. Paul W.S. Anderson's latest foray into the world of game movies, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-afterlife"><em>Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D</em></a> took first place <a href="http://www.1up.com/news/resident-evil-afterlife-top-box-office">in the box office</a> over the weekend, netting $28 million on opening night alone.<br />
<br />
That's the best opening for any film in the series so far, but with an estimated budget of $60 million, it's got a little ways to go to break even. But hey -- enough about <em>the monies</em>. Did <em>you</em> see the movie? How was it? And how was Mrs. Jovavonov ... Joovajanavich ... M.J.?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/13/resident-evil-afterlife-nets-first-place-at-the-box-office/">Resident Evil: Afterlife nets first place at the box office</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 13 Sep 2010 18:15:00 EST. Though the scripts of most game-to-movie adaptations are written with a heavy focus on maintaining the canon and integrity of the source material, it seems ... HA! Oh, man, we almost made it through that sentence without breaking. Anyways, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-afterlife"><em>Resident Evil: Afterlife</em></a> producer/director/writer Paul W.S. Anderson recently <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6881J920100909?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed:+reuters/technologyNews+%28News+/+US+/+Technology%29">gushed to Reuters</a> that much of the script for the fourth film in the franchise was deliberately penned with 3D technology in mind.<br />
<br />
"I wrote things into this script that I knew would work well in 3D, like lots of sets with depth-like tunnels, elevator shafts, and big wide landscapes," Anderson explained. We suppose that doesn't stray too far from the actual <em>Resident Evil</em> games. For instance, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dc5iiT0f1s">this trailer for the film</a> features a ton of people throwing sharp hand tools at other people -- an attack that rings familiar of <em>Resident Evil 4</em>, no? Oh, and let's not forget the absolutely <em>devastating</em> sunglasses death-fling maneuver from <em>Resident Evil 5</em>, seen in <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNs0pF5iCVo">this spoileriffic video</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/09/3d-effects-written-into-resident-evil-afterlife-script/">3D effects written into Resident Evil: Afterlife script</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 09 Sep 2010 17:25:00 EST. A small crowd of movie and game producers met this week at Universal City in Los Angeles for the first-ever <a href="http://www.3dgamingsummit.com/index.html">3D Gaming Summit</a>, to sit down and discuss the trend of 3D imaging in gaming and film. Much of the talk at the summit was speculative -- with almost no actual consumer devices on the market and nearly none within price range of the average consumer anyway, gaming in 3D isn't much more than an idea at this point. Most of the technology companies in attendance are still working to get content producers to use their systems to create games and films rather than selling hardware directly to consumers.<br />
<br />
Still, the panels and discussions at the summit offered an interesting look at what many believe to be the eventual future of the industry. From a lunchtime interview with <em>Mortal Kombat </em>and <em>Resident Evil</em> director Paul W.S. Anderson to a Playstation Move demo (and a panel moderated by a Joystiq editor), the 3D Gaming Summit showed off a lot of guesswork, a few interesting demos, and a few big holes that will need to be filled if 3D gaming is going to ever take off.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/24/3d-gaming-summit/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Finding a new dimension for gaming at the 3D Gaming Summit</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/24/3d-gaming-summit/">Finding a new dimension for gaming at the 3D Gaming Summit</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 24 Apr 2010 15:00:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">We're not sure if you've noticed, but ever since that little indie flick <em>Avatar </em>hit theaters, every studio under the sun has been jumping on the 3D movie gravy train. Well, they'd best slide over and make room for Paul W.S. Anderson and <em>Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D</em>. (Which is -- get this -- in 3D!) <br />
<br />
Capcom Unity is hosting <a href="http://www.capcom-unity.com/jgonzo/blog/2010/04/01/new_resident_evil:_afterlife_3d_images!">the first stills from the film</a>, which of course stars Mila Jovovich, joined this time around by <em>Prison Break </em>star Wentworth Miller (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/30/wentworth-miller-to-play-chris-redfield-in-resident-evil-after/">as Chris Redfield</a>). In 3D! We're just guessing (for distributor Screen Gems' sake) that there'll also be an <em>old fashioned</em> two-dimensional release of the film -- which, unlike most current "3D" movies, is actually being shot in 3D and not converted after the fact <a href="http://www.deadline.com/2010/03/michael-bay-james-cameron-skeptical-of-3d-conversions-the-jury-is-out/">to the tune of $100,000</a> a<em> minute</em>.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/01/first-resident-evil-afterlife-3d-stills-are-2d-compensate-wi/">First 'Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D' stills are 2D, compensate with Mila Jovovich</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 01 Apr 2010 20:00:00 EST. According to <a href="http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/17306">BloodyDisgusting</a>, Sony already has plans for a fifth film following 2010's <em>Afterlife</em> -- which jibes with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/24/next-resident-evil-movie-will-be-in-3d-will-spawn-new-film-tril/">what we heard</a> back at Comic-Con. However, instead of signing on Jovovich to reprise her role as Alice for films beyond <em>Afterlife</em>, the studio is supposedly planning to reboot the franchise and go back to the beginning of it all. <br /><br />The fifth film is tentatively titled <em>Resident Evil: Begins</em>, and would apparently follow <strike>Bruce Wayne's ascent as Batman, guardian of Gotham City</strike> a special military unit that battles a super computer within a complex chock full of the undead. So it'll basically be the first movie again. <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://kotaku.com/5355277/resident-evil-film-series-getting-reboot">Kotaku</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/09/rumor-sony-plans-to-follow-resident-evil-afterlife-with-reboot/">Rumor: Sony plans to follow Resident Evil: Afterlife with reboot Resident Evil: Begins</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 Sep 2009 23:15:00 EST. Anyone who's seen <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resident_Evil_(film)">one of</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resident_Evil:_Apocalypse">the live-action</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resident_Evil:_Extinction">films</a> based on Capcom's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil"><em>Resident Evil</em></a> franchise are aware of how <em>in</em>-<em>your</em>-<em>face</em> the movies' terribleness tends to be. However, horror film news site <a href="http://shocktillyoudrop.com/news/comicconnews.php?id=11172">Shock 'Til You Drop recently got a terrifying piece of news</a> from producer Paul W.S. Anderson at San Diego Comic Con -- the next film in the series, titled <em>Resident Evil: Afterlife</em>, will be presented in 3D. We're thrilled about the stereoscopic Jovovichian action -- we're somewhat less enthusiastic about the bump in ticket prices that'll come about to provide the necessary eyewear.<br /><br />Anderson went on to explain the film would kick off an entirely new trilogy of <em>Resident Evil</em> films, saying he regards it "as a re-tooling and rebirth of the entire franchise." We know what you're thinking -- does this mean the films will finally remotely follow the plot of the games? Oh, don't be silly. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_W._S._Anderson#Filmography">It's Anderson, man</a>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.videogamer.com/news/next_resi_film_to_be_in_3d.html">VideoGamer</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/24/next-resident-evil-movie-will-be-in-3d-will-spawn-new-film-tril/">Next Resident Evil movie will be in 3D, will spawn new film trilogy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 24 Jul 2009 21:00:00 EST. According to <a href="http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com/news/topnews.php?id=10969">Shock Till You Drop</a>, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil"><em>Resident Evil</em></a> movies are getting a fourth installment in <em>Resident Evil: Afterlife</em>. A supposed internal memo at Sony Pictures seems to point to a September 17, 2010 release. Of course, this isn't the first time we've heard about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/30/some-details-scared-up-on-next-resident-evil-movie/">a fourth <em>Resident Evil </em>movie</a>, so we're considering this rumor fairly credible.<br /><br />Do we really want another <em>Resident Evil </em>movie, though? Hasn't <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000170/">Milla Jovovich</a> beaten up enough zombified dogs and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YuRO6CamMw">dudes in rubber suits</a>?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=56836">Coming Soon</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/02/rumor-resident-evil-returns-to-the-silver-screen-in-2010/">Rumor: Resident Evil returns to the silver screen in 2010</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 02 Jul 2009 13:44:00 EST. We're fairly certain that we all now know the many weaknesses of vampires: stakes, crosses, garlic, and <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1099212/">obsessive, lonely teenage girls</a>. However, we're just now starting to figure out the secret to slaying vampire-centric game-to-movie adaptations (namely, Paul W.S. Anderson's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/castlevania-movie-drops-whip-for-sword/">whipless cinematic stab</a> at <em>Castlevania)</em>; a force more powerful than holy symbols or tiny, smelly onions -- the unrelenting stoppage of work by entertainment labor unions.<br /><br />Last December, when the writer's strike had cast a shadow of boredom over the land, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/07/strike-holds-up-castlevania-movie/">the film was indefinitely postponed</a>. Production started back up when said strike ended -- but with the entertainment industry currently staring down the barrel of a Screen Actors Guild strike, <a href="http://movies.ign.com/articles/939/939622p1.html">work on the <em>Castlevania</em> film has been "derailed"</a>. According to an IGN interview with Anderson, future plans for the film won't be decided until the SAG strike has been resolved.<br /><br />Also in said interview, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/19/rumor-spy-hunter-movie-hits-oil-slick-crashes-burns/">Anderson confirms that he's taken himself off</a> of the Rock-infused <em>Spy Hunter</em> film, due to the script being just as terrible as you'd expect it to be. Unlike <em>Castlevania</em>, which Anderson claims to be quite smitten with and wishes to finish, this is probably the last we're going to hear of <em>Spy Hunter</em>'s potentially Oscar-worthy silver screen adaptation.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/21/actor-strike-threatens-castlevania-movie-anderson-drops-spy-hun/">Actor strike threatens Castlevania movie, Anderson drops Spy Hunter movie</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 21 Dec 2008 18:00:00 EST.
