The web comic-made-philanthropy Penny Arcade has announced the return of its self-titled Penny Arcade Scholarship, which aims to award $10,000 to a single student looking to get his or her foot wedged into the game industry's front door. The grant, now in its second year, asks those interested to put pen to paper and write a two-page essay describing their schooling and just how they plan on making an impact in the industry, on top of transcripts and two letters of recommendations.

According to the guidelines spelled out on the grant's website, a qualified applicant must also be a full-time student at an accredited college or university during the 2008-09 school year, must plan to enter the game industry "in some capacity," and must have a minimum 3.3 GPA. If you believe you have what it takes to stand out among what we expect to be a sea of applications, get to writing -- submissions have to be sent in no later than April 30, 2008, with the lucky student being notified by mail in July.

Every other week Scott Jon Siegel contributes Off the Grid, a column about card games, board games, and everything else non-digital.

Chun Li versus Seung Mina; Nightmare versus Morrigan; Akuma versus Tycho Brahe: Ultimate showdowns we're likely never to see outside of crudely-written fan-fiction and our own fevered dreamings. Luckily for us, Sabertooth Games has devised the Universal Fighting System, a collectible card game that allows players to mix and match licensed decks to create legendary one-on-one battles.

There's one problem, or maybe I should call it a caveat: UFS isn't going to be for everybody. Beyond the gorgeous illustrations, and clear appeal to video game fans, this is most definitely a gamer's game; cards are littered with special icons, point values, and ancillary functions that dwarf the relative simplicity of CCGs like Magic: The Gathering and Pokémon. Of course, the reward for this technical complexity is depth, with an incredibly strategic experience waiting to be unlocked by the hardiest of players. Not to deter you, but let this be a warning: A casual card game this is not.

Yes, we wrote "fruit lover" in the headline, but you all know its real, alliterative name. Game Videos has posted more footage from the impending Penny Arcade Adventures: On The Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness. This time we're taken to a factory where workers produce the produce-supportive robot as the gang face off against a quartet of humans and diminutive machines.

The video is embedded after the break, although you might want to skip ahead to the battles (we recommend the high resolution version if you want to read the dialog). Also, for those who might have reacted negatively to the previous footage from this week (a good number of commenters expressed dismay), Gabe wrote a post on Penny Arcade expressing his confidence in the title. Sure, there's some obvious bias, but the duo is largely known for its reputation, and we have faith they wouldn't support it if there was a sign of sub-par quality.

The font of information about Penny Arcade Adventures: On The Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness has slowed to a light trickle since last year's Penny Arcade Expo, where it was announced the game would be released on Xbox Live Arcade as well as Mac and PC. That's why we were so pleased to see this new gameplay footage, which gives us a taste of the game's eccentric turn-based combat system, and an idea of exactly how the duo's comedic style will translate into an interactive format.

The new footage also reveals that the game might overtake Condemned: Criminal Origins as the premier hobo murder simulator for the Xbox 360, a distinction that Gabe and Tycho would no doubt be extremely proud of.

Child's Play organizers have announced that the annual charity drive is now underway. The drive was first launched some five years ago by Penny Arcade masterminds Gabe and Tycho as a fundraiser for the Seattle Children's Hospital, and has since grown to become a global hub of good will for those in need, while simultaneously demonstrating that gamers by and large are not the anti-social jerkwads the media would make them out to be.

Those interested in contributing to the drive, which now includes hospitals in more than 25 states and five countries, can easily donate items though purchases made via Amazon, and officials note that the tax deductible gifts will be sent directly to those hospitals in need.

In addition, the annual Child's Play Fundraider Dinner is scheduled to take place on December 11 at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle, and will as always include both a silent and live auction, with all proceeds going towards the charity.

Today's Penny Arcade comic covers a subject that is near and dear to us: the poor Nintendo employee who was fired for inappropriate statements made on her blog. Even though her blog was really mean to her coworkers, we feel a certain solidarity as Nintendo bloggers. Whether or not she deserved dismissal for statements made while off-duty is a little bit more of a complex issue than we want to get into right now (though we lean heavily toward "no"), but we have no problem pointing you at a funny comic so you can laugh.

Luckily for us, whenever we're mean on our blog, it's towards the Imagine games and not people. If Imagine Babyz were our boss, well, we'd probably be in jail by now.

Why waste afternoons playing video games by yourself when you can best your opponents on the virtual battlefield? We beseech you, dear reader, to consider devising your own Omegathon competition, modeled after the five-game event seen every year at the Penny Arcade Expo. Here are some suggested guidelines:
  1. At least one game that is "off the grid" (i.e. not on a television screen).
  2. At least one retro title (e.g. Pong, Tetris, Daikatana)
  3. A variety of genres such as puzzle, first-person shooter, racing, etc.
  4. At least one embarrassing title that gets competitors active. Usually a rhythm game
Bear in mind the length of each competitive match -- although Civilization would make for an interesting event, if you place it early with 10 contenders, you're going to lose enthusiasm fast. Don't have any friends? Create an Omegathon for yourself -- it'll be exactly like preparing for Ninja Warrior by building your own obstacles in your yard. We're a little late in getting to it, but we would be remiss in our fanboy duties if we didn't report that Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness is officially heading to Xbox Live Arcade. As Rain-Slick is an episodic affair, its arrival on XBLA is a fairly momentous occasion. Episodic gaming is a term that has been bandied around for a while now, so we're hopeful that the game will deliver on the promise of cheap, easily digestible gaming. Penny Arcade Adventures is scheduled to debut on XBLA in early 2008 alongside the PC, OS X, and Linux versions. Because there was so much to do at PAX that some fans may have missed their chance to pose questions, Mike and Jerry held a second panel. By the time they came out (to strobe lights and "Hustlin'"), there was already a massive line of inquisitive attendees. No Bolls this time, so the mood was much more celebratory and less terrifyingly unstable.

The highlight of the show was when a fan presented Mike and Jerry with hand made hats in the shape of the head of the Fruit ... Interactor-with, which both wore proudly (of course the picture didn't come out-- how dare they have an event in a dark room with bright lights directly on them.)

Is it rude to print their responses to the question "What was the worst thing you ever did?" I guess not, since they revealed it in front of a throng. Mike, at age 8 or 9, snared his cat with a rope. He turned to his mother in the audience to ask if she knew about that-- she didn't, to which Mike responded "Great." Jerry couldn't think of any particularly horrible things he'd done, so Mike regaled us with the tale of Jerry finding, and biting into, a beetle in his chai tea, and continuing to drink the tea.

This past week had all three of Penny Arcade's comic had to do with 360 titles, namely Stranglehold's demo, BioShock's demo and street date breakery. Soft Targets gives insight into the Precision Tequila Bomb, and Gabe's definition of "headshot," and the Achievement that should be awarded for proficiency therein. Our Continuing Series is a public service announcement to parents and the dangers of their kids splicing with plasmids. Finally, A Dark Recipe goes to show the lengths at which Tycho would go to secure a copy of Bioshock before the street date, obviously he didn't hear about our contest.

According to Gaming Target, EGM is reporting that Penny Arcade's first game could soon join their innumerable picture packs and themes on Xbox Live. The mag brings the news in their September issue that Penny Arcade Adventures Episode One: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness will appear on the Xbox Live Arcade in the fall.

Developer Hothead Games isn't confirming the news at the moment, but with PAX a scant three weeks away, they could just be trying to keep the tabby in the satchel so Gabe and Tycho can reveal the news at the show. For our part, we'd love to launch PA's game from our Cardboard Tube Samurai-themed Dashboard, the theme we shall continue to rock until something better comes along, in other words: Forever.

Gaming Target is reporting that the September issue of EGM reveals that the PC-exclusive Penny Arcade Adventures game will be making its way onto the Xbox Live Arcade. The Penny Arcade game, ever so conveniently titled Penny Arcade Adventures On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness Episode One, was previously announced for release on the PC, but developer Hothead Games has always been open to releasing the game to other platforms saying that a console release could happen "someday". So, hopefully EGM is right and "someday" ends up being soon with a Penny Arcade XBLA release by the end of the year. Who knows, maybe the Penny Arcade gang will be making an official announcement at PAX in a few weeks and surprise us with Penny Arcade Adventures On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness Episode One Xbox Live Arcade Version of Total Awesomeness.

Upon seeing this Penny Arcade comic, our own Nick Doerr breathed a sigh of relief saying, "Awesome. I finally feel I'm not the only one strangely interested in the game." You're not alone Nick -- in fact, there's an increasing interest for this unique real and virtual card game. The synergistic qualities of Eye of Judgment give it a strange appeal.

The nerd-king Tycho explains in his blog: "The physicality of card placement and interaction has its own virtues. Cards are recognized in a second or less, so watching them transformed is actually a very interactive, exciting process. You don't actually need the PS3 to play it - the game can be played on a regular table without any electronic accompaniment. But you'll probably find, as we did, that having a perpetually available neutral arbiter who will track all numeric systems is pretty convenient."

We were impressed by our brief time with it at E3 ... and it looks like Penny Arcade is too. Slowly, but surely, it appears that positive word of mouth is spreading for this incredibly innovative and unique card game.

Itching to play Pink Godzilla Dev Kit? Going to the Penny Arcade Expo? If so, you're in luck. Pink Godzilla Games recently informed Joystiq that they will be in strong showing at PAX 2007 in Seattle. In addition to offering copies of PG Dev Kit for sale, Pink Godzilla will be hosting a tournament for the game, with prizes for the top three competitors, and a very special super-secret prize for first place.

According to Pink Godzilla co-owner Greg Hess, the tournament will be held in rounds of three-player, single-elimination games. Space will be limited, so Hess recommends signing up at the start of PAX. Sign-ups will be located at the free-play tables for PG Dev Kit. The winner will receive $200 spending money, and a very special prize that Pink Godzilla doesn't want to announce quite yet. Suffice it to say, it's pretty darn cool. Any rampant speculation?

We know how much you guys enjoy examining every scrap of new Penny Arcade Adventures: Episode One: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness footage that's released and then proclaiming it to be totally awesome/totally crappy. As we don't think ourselves fit to deny you that joy, we present the new Comic-Con trailer for the game.

In our infinite wisdom, we refuse to join either side of this debate. It looks like the game is heavy on the solid writing and the beautiful art direction, so we guess that puts us in the underrepresented "totally what we expected" camp. Though we're attempting to stay somewhat neutral, we'd be lying if we didn't admit we were looking forward to seeing what the PA guys have cooked up. Now, let the ongoing debate commence once more!

Harmonix will have a booth at this year's PAX convention in Seattle Aug 24-26 where Rock Band will be playable. For those who during E3 didn't have an appointment with EA, get invited to the West Hollywood party or end up in the suite gathering, here's their chance to play with the general populace -- like Chris Furniss of The Weekly Geek Show. Furniss points out, "Sure you could play Harmonix's Guitar Hero-and-every-other-game-ever-killer behind closed doors at this year's E3 ... But it wasn't on the show floor. This just furthers my frustration with companies at this year's E3."

Yes, the picture above created by and featuring Furniss does not actually use the Rock Band peripherals and he's using Donkey Kong bongos in place of the drums -- but it's still funny, darn it! Hopefully Harmonix will think ahead and have some plan set up for PAX and the mass of people who will want to play Rock Band. The 20x30 booth they'll have set up may only be for one set, which means PAX attendees will hopefully not experience the Nintendo Wii line of 2006 for their chance at the game. Thankfully, the game is just as fun to watch as it is to play.

Not a day passes without some poor sap's waggling image being posted on Flickr or YouTube, their awkwardness immortalized for the world to see. Today's Penny Arcade comic is a cautionary tale for all the gamers out there who lose themselves in the Wii's heightened brand of immersion, flapping their hands and dressing in costume for that authentic experience.

With Harry Potter mania being at an all time high -- several video games, a new movie, and the final book all within a few weeks' reach -- we're at our most vulnerable. Guarding ourselves against these embarrassing exposures should be priority one. Remember that the next time you start riding your mother's broom during a mock Quidditch match and notice a red light blinking in one of the room's air vents.

Inspired by the craftsmanship and generosity of Morpheon Mods' Zelda-themed Wii and DS Lite auctions, Australian Michael Page hacked together a Hylian GameCube of his own to sell, pledging a portion of the proceeds to Penny-Arcade's Child's Play charity.

The black-and-gold-painted system (PAL) features 11 bright LEDs in total, four of which light up through the holes drilled above the controller ports to indicate their player numbers. Additional LEDs have been installed next to the vents and inside the disc tray. According to Michael, the image of Navi on the transparent cover "looks amazing" when the blue glow hits it.

The Legend of Zelda's phoenix and Triforce emblem have also been slapped onto the controller panel for extra effect. All that's missing now is the trademark "secret" chime whenever you open its lid. Hop onto Epona and gallop past the post break for more photos of the mod.

Jealous.) are just a couple of people who did. Ben Furneaux, otherwise known as "The Man Who Said Those Things On That Podcast What People Didn't Like", has made a statement about what was said as an attempt to cool the fires of fanboydom that are licking at his feet.

The statement can be found on his personal blog. In it he stands by the comments he made and suggests that most of the ill-will that was received after the podcast came from confusion about what relation the speakers had to Sony's PR machine. The answer, seemingly, is none. Does that make what was said any more acceptable? That's up to you. Though fanboys have got away with saying far worse.

Be sure to read Ben's full statement. We assume the ThreeSpeech podcast will be continuing regardless of this entire debacle. Though if you're looking for an official straight-from-Sony podcast, then you'll probably need to wait for the PlayStation.Blog to start one. Which would not be a terrible idea.

The exhibitor list for this year's Penny Arcade Expo has been made, checked twice, and finalized. While the past exhibitors are all still present (including favorites Pink Godzilla), the major publishers have signed up en masse.

Joining Nintendo and Microsoft this year on the super-sized list of 53 exhibitors are Sony, Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Sierra and Konami, among many others. Indie representation will be provided Gamecock, Telltale, and more. Is that the shadow of E3 we see before us? Full list after the break.

The guys at Penny Arcade seem a little perplexed as to the Unlock Xbox marketing campaign from Doritos. Apparently, putting together a videogame based on a tortilla chip is pushing the envelope for ridiculous ideas, intense experiences notwithstanding. While the idea of getting your Arcade title's concept published on Xbox Live Marketplace is definitely a cool one, the necessity to incorporate some Doritos branding into the gameplay does seem a little cheesy. Do you mind the product placement suggested for submissions to the contest, or do you think the opportunity is too good to complain about such details?

Those of you with aspirations to be a rake-wielding hobo vigilante may still have years of hard living and railroad hitching ahead of you before you become overtaken with the impulse to don a stovepipe hat and wield a (no doubt sharpened) lawn and garden instrument. If video games are good for anything, it's for helping people achieve those sorts of dreams (except for you Manhunt 2 fans), so we were quite pleased to see these latest screenshots of the "Create a Player" feature from Penny Arcade Adventures: OtRSPoD.

Major Nelson has raved about it, and now the PA crew gave it a shot and enjoy it. Surf's Up, the film-to-game adaption is actually enjoyable for adults as much as kids. Perhaps the source material actually adds to the game, the straightforward Achievements, or maybe it's the almost non existent learning curve that has pick up and play accessibility. The one thing we can learn from Gabe, though, is that just because you can have fun playing "kids games", we wouldn't recommend trying to find other kids to play with.

Sure, this may only be the fourth of the current comic streak for Xbox 360 related strips from Penny Arcade, but it definitely brings up a valid point that deserves discussion. Retro titles from our "mispent youth", as Peter Moore so elegantly put it, are usually somewhere in the neighbourhood of 15 to 25 years old. Sure, they may get reskinned with some extra pixels per sprite, but the vast majority are the same game they were when they were on early consoles or in cabinets. Should they be treated the same by reviewers as retail games, or should the fact that these are pieces of gaming history give them a little grace? After all, if you don't like retro titles, haven't played the original game, or didn't enjoy the title, you could always not buy it.

It's the picture that sells it, really, and presentation can be just as important in a webcomic as content. Despite the usual, numerous objections in the comment section, Scott Ramsoomair's VG Cats strip took the top spot as the week's best webcomic.

Coming in second place was the second Penny Arcade strip, "Retreat to the Citadel," (we favored the first strip, ourselves) while third place went to Ctrl+Alt+Del. Thanks to everyone who voted and be sure to let us know of any game-related webcomics you stumble upon this week!

With all the demos that came out last week, it's not a surprise that the Xbox 360 got a week's worth of comics from Penny Arcade. Friday's offering takes a look at some of the less than stellar offerings supplied, in the simple form of the controller layout shown during the loading screen for the fictitious demo of Starfire Saga: Laserion. Obviously this takes a jab at some of the more convoluted controllers found in games. Our favorites are the controls found for the Back, Start, and A buttons, although there are a bunch of hidden gems to be found. Any button assignments make you crack a smile, or even a smirk?

Hothead Games, who are currently conjuring code for Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness: Episode One (or PAA: OtRSPoD: E1) have won the Canadian New Media Award for Most Promising Company of the Year. The honor earns them, bragging rights notwithstanding, the prestigious Pixel award.

The award was given in recognition of the three projects Hothead is currently developing. In addition to the anticipated Penny Arcade Adventures, being developed in conjunction with legendary grumpy gamer Ron Gilbert, the developer is also working on Swarm, an "environmentally-themed comedy adventure game" with "machine learning" AI, and a joint venture with Cambrian House on Gwabs, a desktop-to-desktop combat title.

The online gaming community, or more specifically, Xbox Live has its fair share of bad apples, and based solely on its success and user base, it can be quiet easy to find prime examples in Halo 2 or even Halo 3's beta. Unfortunately, other types gaming don't have this, and when you start blurring the line between such forms of entertainment, there's bound to be a clash, right? Well, the guys at PA seem to think so with the recent announcement of Halo Clix. HBO community member turned Bungie employee KP seems pretty convinced about their source material. Does this one tickle your funny bone?

Penny Arcade's latest comic takes a rather humorous look at Shadowrun's races. In particular, the Troll, and the potential hazards that the RNA Corporation has to take into account when employing such a metahuman. In Tycho's post, he gives his take on the game's party system and gameplay and continues to support and recommend the title in spite of mediocre reviews. Either way, he reminds us that the demo is coming out tomorrow. Speaking of, are any of you still on the fence going to download the demo and give it a shot? We know that some of us here and Fanboy Towers made promises in regards to giving the demo the attention it deserves.
