The web comic-made-philanthropy Penny Arcade has announced the return of its self-titled Penny Arcade Scholarship, which aims to award $10,000 to a single student looking to get his or her foot wedged into the game industry's front door. The grant, now in its second year, asks those interested to put pen to paper and write a two-page essay describing their schooling and just how they plan on making an impact in the industry, on top of transcripts and two letters of recommendations. <br /><br />According to the guidelines spelled out on <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/scholarship/index.php">the grant's website</a>, a qualified applicant must also be a full-time student at an accredited college or university during the 2008-09 school year, must plan to enter the game industry "in some capacity," and must have a minimum 3.3 GPA. If you believe you have what it takes to stand out among what we expect to be a sea of applications, get to writing -- submissions have to be sent in no later than April 30, 2008, with the lucky student being notified by mail in July.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/18/penny-arcade-ponies-up-10-000-scholarship-for-game-education/">Penny Arcade ponies up $10,000 scholarship for game education</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 18 Mar 2008 17:00:00 EST. <font color="#808080"><span style="font-style: italic;">Every other week Scott Jon Siegel contributes </span><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/offthegrid/">Off the Grid</a><span style="font-style: italic;">, a column about card games, board games, and everything else non-digital.<br /><br /></span></font>Chun Li versus Seung Mina; Nightmare versus Morrigan; Akuma versus Tycho Brahe: Ultimate showdowns we're likely never to see outside of crudely-written fan-fiction and our own fevered dreamings. Luckily for us, Sabertooth Games has devised the <em><a href="http://www.sabertoothgames.com/ufs/ufs.asp">Universal Fighting System</a></em>, a collectible card game that allows players to mix and match licensed decks to create legendary one-on-one battles.<br /><br />There's one problem, or maybe I should call it a caveat: <em>UFS</em> isn't going to be for everybody. Beyond the gorgeous illustrations, and clear appeal to video game fans, this is most definitely a <strong>gamer's game</strong>; cards are littered with special icons, point values, and ancillary functions that dwarf the relative simplicity of CCGs like <em>Magic: The Gathering</em> and <em>Pok&eacute;mon</em>. Of course, the reward for this technical complexity is depth, with an incredibly strategic experience waiting to be unlocked by the hardiest of players. Not to deter you, but let this be a warning: A casual card game this is not.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/31/off-the-grid-reviews-universal-fighting-system/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Off the Grid reviews Universal Fighting System</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/31/off-the-grid-reviews-universal-fighting-system/">Off the Grid reviews Universal Fighting System</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 31 Jan 2008 18:30:00 EST. Yes, we wrote "fruit lover" in the headline, but you all know its real, alliterative name. <a href="http://gamevideos.com/video/id/17213">Game Videos</a> has posted more footage from the impending <em>Penny Arcade Adventures: On The Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness</em>. This time we're taken to a factory where workers produce the produce-supportive robot as the gang face off against a quartet of humans and diminutive machines.<br /><br />The video is embedded after the break, although you might want to skip ahead to the battles (we recommend the high resolution version if you want to read the dialog). Also, for those who might have reacted negatively to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/19/new-penny-arcade-adventures-gameplay-footage-features-hobo-warfa/">previous footage</a> from this week (a good number of commenters expressed dismay), Gabe <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/2008/01/21">wrote a post</a> on <em>Penny Arcade</em> expressing his confidence in the title. Sure, there's some obvious bias, but the duo is largely known for its reputation, and we have faith they wouldn't support it if there was a sign of sub-par quality.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/24/todays-most-fruit-tastic-video-penny-arcade-adventures-fruit/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Today's most fruit-tastic video: Penny Arcade Adventures 'fruit lover' footage</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/24/todays-most-fruit-tastic-video-penny-arcade-adventures-fruit/">Today's most fruit-tastic video: Penny Arcade Adventures 'fruit lover' footage</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 24 Jan 2008 01:30:00 EST. That's why we were so pleased to see <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/29827.html?r=1&amp;type=wmv">this new gameplay footage</a>, which gives us a taste of the game's eccentric turn-based combat system, and an idea of exactly how the duo's <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/">comedic style</a> will translate into an interactive format.<br /><br />The new footage also reveals that the game might overtake <em>Condemned: Criminal Origins</em> as the premier hobo murder simulator for the Xbox 360, a distinction that Gabe and Tycho would no doubt be extremely proud of.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/19/new-penny-arcade-adventures-gameplay-footage-features-hobo-warfa/">New Penny Arcade Adventures gameplay footage features hobo warfare</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 19 Jan 2008 13:45:00 EST. The drive was first launched some five years ago by Penny Arcade masterminds Gabe and Tycho as a fundraiser for the Seattle Children's Hospital, and has since grown to become a global hub of good will for those in need, while simultaneously demonstrating that gamers by and large are <em>not </em>the anti-social jerkwads the media would make them out to be. <br /><br />Those interested in contributing to the drive, which now includes hospitals in more than 25 states and five countries, can easily donate items though purchases made via <a href="http://www.amazon.com">Amazon</a>, and officials note that the tax deductible gifts will be sent directly to those hospitals in need. <br /><br />In addition, the annual Child's Play Fundraider Dinner is scheduled to take place on December 11 at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle, and will as always include both a silent and live auction, with all proceeds going towards the charity.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/02/fifth-annual-childs-play-charity-drive-begins/">Fifth annual Child's Play charity drive begins</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 02 Nov 2007 19:00:00 EST. Even though her blog was <em>really mean</em> to her coworkers, we feel a certain solidarity as Nintendo bloggers. Whether or not she deserved dismissal for statements made while off-duty is a little bit more of a complex issue than we want to get into right now (though we lean heavily toward "no"), but we have no problem pointing you at a funny comic so you can laugh.<br /><br />Luckily for us, whenever we're mean on our blog, it's towards the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/08/ubisoft-s-double-standard-for-awful-game-titles/"><em>Imagine</em></a> games and not <em>people. </em>If <em>Imagine Babyz</em> were our boss, well, we'd probably be in jail by now.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/05/penny-arcade-on-bloggergate/">Penny Arcade on Bloggergate</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 05 Oct 2007 17:10:00 EST. Did you ever pass / receive "do you like me: yes or no" messages in school? No? Oh well, Spider-Man did, according to Tim Buckley. We beseech you, dear reader, to consider devising your own Omegathon competition, modeled after the five-game event seen every year at the <em>Penny Arcade </em>Expo<em>. </em>Here are some suggested guidelines:<br />
<ol>
    <li>At least one game that is "off the grid" (i.e. not on a television screen). <br /></li>
    <li>At least one retro title (e.g. <em>Pong, Tetris, Daikatana</em>)</li>
    <li>A variety of genres such as puzzle, first-person shooter, racing, etc.<br /></li>
    <li>At least one embarrassing title that gets competitors active. Usually a rhythm game</li>
</ol>
Bear in mind the length of each competitive match -- although <em>Civilization </em>would make for an interesting event, if you place it early with 10 contenders, you're going to lose enthusiasm fast. Don't have any friends? Create an Omegathon for yourself -- it'll be exactly like preparing for <em>Ninja Warrior</em> by building your own obstacles in your yard. Tell us your ideal Omegathon run and check out our picks for the week's best gaming comics. Be sure to vote for your favorite!<!-- // Begin Pollhost.com Poll Code // -->

Hats off* to <a href="http://www.2pstart.com/2007/09/05/marketing-101/"><em>2P Start</em></a> for finding a way to spin the spin of <em>Lair</em> -- the logic is so dizzying, it's like we were actually trying to pull a 180-degree turn in the game (zing!). As <em>Rain-Slick</em> is an episodic affair, its arrival on XBLA is a fairly momentous occasion. Episodic gaming is a term that has been bandied around for a while now, so we're hopeful that the game will deliver on the promise of cheap, easily digestible gaming. <em>Penny Arcade Adventures</em> is scheduled to debut on XBLA in early 2008 alongside the PC, OS X, and Linux versions. More information about <em>Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness</em> can be found on the <a href="http://www.rainslick.com/">official site</a>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/25/pax-07-penny-arcade-adventures-coming-to-xbla/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/28/pax-07-penny-arcade-adventures-to-xbla/">PAX 07: Penny Arcade adventures to XBLA</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Aug 2007 12:45:00 EST. Because there was <em>so much to do</em> at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pax07">PAX</a> that some fans may have missed their chance to pose questions, Mike and Jerry held a second panel. By the time they came out (to strobe lights and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SUtW3rOkz4">"Hustlin'"</a>), there was already a massive line of inquisitive attendees. No <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/25/pax-07-uwe-bolls-guest-appearance-on-video/">Bolls</a> this time, so the mood was much more celebratory and less terrifyingly unstable.<br /><br />The highlight of the show was when a fan presented Mike and Jerry with hand made hats in the shape of the head of the Fruit ... <em>Interactor-with</em>, which both wore proudly (of course the picture didn't come out-- how <em>dare</em> they have an event in a dark room with bright lights directly on them.) <br /><br />Is it rude to print their responses to the question "What was the worst thing you ever did?" I guess not, since they revealed it in front of a <em>throng.</em> Mike, at age 8 or 9, snared his cat with a rope. He turned to his mother in the audience to ask if she knew about that-- she didn't, to which Mike responded "Great." Jerry couldn't think of any particularly horrible things he'd done, so Mike regaled us with the tale of Jerry finding, and biting into, a beetle in his chai tea, and <em>continuing </em>to drink the tea.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/27/pax-07-the-penny-arcade-panel-ii-panel-harder/">PAX 07: The Penny Arcade Panel II: Panel Harder</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Aug 2007 00:30:00 EST. This past week <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/08/13">had</a> <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/08/14">all</a> <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/08/17">three</a> of Penny Arcade's comic had to do with 360 titles, namely <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Stranglehold/">Stranglehold</a></em>'s <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/08/stranglehold-demo-available-on-the-xblm/">demo</a>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/BioShock/">BioShock</a></em>'s <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/12/bioshock-demo-available-for-download-now/">demo</a> and street date <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/15/toys-r-us-puts-bioshock-on-shelves-already/">breakery</a>. Soft Targets gives insight into the Precision Tequila Bomb, and Gabe's definition of "headshot," and the Achievement that <em><strong>should</strong></em> be awarded for proficiency therein. Our Continuing Series is a public service announcement to parents and the dangers of their kids splicing with plasmids. According to <a href="http://www.gamingtarget.com/article.php?artid=7349">Gaming Target</a>, EGM is reporting that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/PennyArcade/">Penny Arcade</a>'s first game could soon join their innumerable picture packs and themes on Xbox Live. The mag brings the news in their September issue that <em>Penny Arcade Adventures Episode One: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness</em> will appear on the Xbox Live Arcade in the fall.<br /><br />Developer Hothead Games isn't confirming the news at the moment, but with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/PAX/">PAX</a> a scant three weeks away, they could just be trying to keep the tabby in the satchel so Gabe and Tycho can reveal the news at the show. For our part, we'd love to launch PA's game from our Cardboard Tube Samurai-themed Dashboard, the theme we shall continue to rock until something better comes along, in other words: Forever.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2007/08/07/rumor-penny-arcade-game-may-come-to-xbla/">X3F</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/07/rumor-xbla-could-get-penny-arcade-game/">Rumor: XBLA could get Penny Arcade game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Aug 2007 12:15:00 EST. The <em>Penny Arcade</em> game, ever so conveniently titled <font size="2"><em>Penny Arcade Adventures On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness Episode One</em>, was previously announced for release on the PC, but developer Hothead Games has always been open to releasing the game to other platforms saying that a console release could happen "someday". So, hopefully EGM is right and "someday" ends up being soon with a <em>Penny Arcade</em> XBLA release by the end of the year. <p>Upon seeing this <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/08/01">Penny Arcade comic</a>, our own Nick Doerr breathed a sigh of relief saying, "Awesome. I finally feel I'm not the only one strangely interested in the game." You're not alone Nick -- in fact, there's an increasing interest for this unique real and virtual card game. The synergistic qualities of <em>Eye of Judgment</em> give it a strange appeal.</p>
<p>The nerd-king Tycho explains <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/2007/08/01">in his blog</a>: "The physicality of card placement and interaction has its own virtues. Cards are recognized in a second or less, so watching them transformed is actually a very interactive, exciting process. You don't actually need the PS3 to play it - the game can be played on a regular table without any electronic accompaniment. But you'll probably find, as we did, that having a perpetually available neutral arbiter who will track all numeric systems is pretty convenient."</p>
<p>We were impressed by our brief time with it at E3 ... and it looks like Penny Arcade is too. Slowly, but surely, it appears that positive word of mouth is spreading for this incredibly innovative and unique card game.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/04/penny-arcade-becomes-obsessed-with-eye-of-judgment/">Penny Arcade becomes obsessed with Eye of Judgment</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 04 Aug 2007 23:30:00 EST. <br />Itching to play <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/02/pink-godzilla-dev-kit-in-stock-prettier-than-ever/">Pink Godzilla Dev Kit</a>?</em> Going to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pax">Penny Arcade Expo</a>? If so, you're in luck. Pink Godzilla Games recently informed Joystiq that they will be in strong showing at <a href="http://pennyarcadeexpo.com/">PAX 2007</a> in Seattle. In addition to offering copies of <em>PG Dev Kit </em>for sale, Pink Godzilla will be hosting a tournament for the game, with prizes for the top three competitors, and a very special super-secret prize for first place.<br /><br />According to Pink Godzilla co-owner Greg Hess, the tournament will be held in rounds of three-player, single-elimination games. Space will be limited, so Hess recommends signing up at the start of PAX. Sign-ups will be located at the free-play tables for <em>PG Dev Kit</em>. The winner will receive $200 spending money, and a very special prize that Pink Godzilla doesn't want to announce quite yet. Suffice it to say, it's pretty darn cool. Any rampant speculation?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/03/play-pink-godzilla-dev-kit-at-pax-win-fabulous-prizes/">Play Pink Godzilla Dev Kit at PAX, win fabulous prizes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 03 Aug 2007 15:40:00 EST. As we don't think ourselves fit to deny you that joy, we present the new Comic-Con trailer for the game. <br /><br />In our infinite wisdom, we refuse to join either side of this debate. It looks like the game is heavy on the solid writing and the beautiful art direction, so we guess that puts us in the underrepresented "totally what we expected" camp. Though we're attempting to stay somewhat neutral, we'd be lying if we didn't admit we were looking forward to seeing what the <em>PA</em> guys have cooked up. Harmonix will have a booth at this year's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/27/pax-07-set-for-aug-24-26-in-seattle/">PAX convention</a> in Seattle Aug 24-26 where <em>Rock Band</em> will be playable. For those who during E3 didn't have an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/joystiq-hands-on-rock-band/">appointment with EA</a>, get invited to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/attend-the-rock-band-party-vicariously-through-the-magic-of-vide/">West Hollywood party</a> or end up in the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/13/impromptu-e3-gathering-wants-rock-band-dead-or-alive/">suite gathering</a>, here's their chance to play with the general populace -- like Chris Furniss of The <a href="http://weeklygeekshow.com/2007/07/rock_band_playable_at_pax.php">Weekly Geek Show</a>. Furniss points out, "Sure you could play Harmonix's <em>Guitar Hero</em>-and-every-other-game-ever-killer behind closed doors at this year's E3 ... But it <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/13/all-of-e3s-barker-hangar-in-less-than-five-minutes/">wasn't on the show floor</a>. This just furthers my frustration with companies at this year's E3."<br /><br />Yes, the picture above created by and featuring Furniss does not actually use the <em>Rock Band</em> peripherals and he's using Donkey Kong bongos in place of the drums -- but it's still funny, darn it! Hopefully Harmonix will think ahead and have some plan set up for PAX and the mass of people who will want to play <em>Rock Band</em>. The 20x30 booth they'll have set up may only be for one set, which means PAX attendees will hopefully not experience the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/05/e3-2006s-wii-line-in-real-time/">Nintendo Wii line of 2006</a> for their chance at the game. Thankfully, the game is just as fun to watch as it is to play.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/24/rock-band-playable-at-pax/">Rock Band playable at PAX</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Jul 2007 12:45:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/promotional%20consideration">Promotional Consideration</a> is a weekly feature about the Nintendo DS advertisements you usually flip past, change the channel on, or just tune out.<br /><br />If you missed our spotlight on Leo Burnett's "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/08/promotional-consideration-communion-day/">Communion Day</a>" ad last Sunday, make sure to give it a glance. Even if you've already skimmed through our words on the award-winning piece, we've updated our summation with some insight from art director Rosemary Collini Bosso.<br /><br />This weekend's installment of Promotional Consideration takes a critical eye to an unconvincing ad that might actually <em>drive away</em> consumers. Read on for more details.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/15/promotional-consideration-come-as-you-are/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Promotional Consideration: Come As You Are</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/15/promotional-consideration-come-as-you-are/">Promotional Consideration: Come As You Are</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 15 Jul 2007 15:20:00 EST. Today's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pennyarcade">Penny Arcade</a> comic is a cautionary tale for all the gamers out there who lose themselves in the Wii's heightened brand of immersion, flapping their hands and dressing in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/cosplay/">costume</a> for that <em>authentic experience</em>. <br /><br />With <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/HarryPotter/">Harry Potter</a></em> mania being at an all time high -- several video games, a new movie, and the final book all within a few weeks' reach -- we're at our most vulnerable. Guarding ourselves against these embarrassing exposures should be priority one. Remember that the next time you start riding your mother's broom during a mock Quidditch match and notice a red light blinking in one of the room's air vents.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/09/harry-potter-and-the-order-of-the-dweebs/">Harry Potter and the Order of the Dweebs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 09 Jul 2007 18:20:00 EST. Additional LEDs have been installed next to the vents and inside the disc tray. Jealous.) are just a couple of people who did. Ben Furneaux, otherwise known as "The Man Who Said Those Things On That Podcast What People Didn't Like", has made a statement about what was said as an attempt to cool the fires of fanboydom that are licking at his feet.<br /><br />The statement can be found on his <a href="http://benfurneaux.blogspot.com/2007/06/i-talk-and-once-somebody-listened.html">personal blog</a>. In it he stands by the comments he made and suggests that most of the ill-will that was received after the podcast came from confusion about what relation the speakers had to Sony's PR machine. The answer, seemingly, is none. Does that make what was said any more acceptable? That's up to you. Though fanboys have got away with saying far worse. <br /><br />Be sure to read Ben's <a href="http://benfurneaux.blogspot.com/2007/06/i-talk-and-once-somebody-listened.html">full statement</a>. We assume the ThreeSpeech podcast will be continuing regardless of this entire debacle. Though if you're looking for an official straight-from-Sony podcast, then you'll probably need to wait for the <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/">PlayStation.Blog</a> to start one. Which would not be a terrible idea.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/28/threespeech-podcast-producer-makes-a-statement/">ThreeSpeech podcast producer makes a statement</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 28 Jun 2007 14:00:00 EST. The exhibitor list for this year's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/PennyArcade/">Penny Arcade</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/PennyArcadeExpo/">Expo</a> has been made, checked twice, and finalized. While the past exhibitors are all still present (including favorites Pink Godzilla), the major publishers have signed up <span style="font-style: italic;">en masse</span>. <br /><br />Joining Nintendo and Microsoft this year on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/15/pax-venue-will-triple-in-size-in-2007/">super-sized</a> list of 53 exhibitors are Sony, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ElectronicArts/">Electronic Arts</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Ubisoft/">Ubisoft</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Sierra/">Sierra</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Konami/">Konami</a>, among many others. Indie representation will be provided <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Gamecock/">Gamecock</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Telltale/">Telltale</a>, and more. Is that the shadow of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/E3/">E3</a> we see before us? Those of you with aspirations to be a rake-wielding hobo vigilante may still have years of hard living and railroad hitching ahead of you before you become overtaken with the impulse to don a stovepipe hat and wield a (no doubt sharpened) lawn and garden instrument. If video games are good for anything, it's for helping people achieve those sorts of dreams (except for you <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Manhunt2/">Manhunt 2</a></em> fans), so we were quite pleased to see these latest screenshots of the "Create a Player" feature from <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/PennyArcadeAdventures/">Penny Arcade Adventures: OtRSPoD</a></em>.<br /><br />Not interested? Thought there's obviously no pleasing you, we're quite pleased to see they've cranked the cel-shading engine up to 11, as evidenced in last month's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/25/penny-arcade-adventures-game-gets-new-trailer/">trailer from PC Gamer</a> (helpfully included after the break).<em><br /><br /></em><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/penny-arcade-adventures/">Penny Arcade Adventures</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/penny-arcade-adventures/#661913"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/02/1-173-env-orange_tree_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/penny-arcade-adventures/#661914"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/02/1-203-combat-ff_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/penny-arcade-adventures/#661915"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/02/2-16-dialogue_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/penny-arcade-adventures/#661916"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/02/2-20-dialogue_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/penny-arcade-adventures/#661917"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/02/2-120-adv-hobo_alley_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/22/penny-arcade-adventures-new-screens-and-old-trailer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Penny Arcade Adventures new screens and old trailer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/22/penny-arcade-adventures-new-screens-and-old-trailer/">Penny Arcade Adventures new screens and old trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 22 Jun 2007 10:20:00 EST. Perhaps the source material actually adds to the game, the straightforward <a href="http://xbox360achievements.org/achievements.php?gameID=236">Achievements</a>, or maybe it's the almost non existent learning curve that has pick up and play accessibility. The one thing we can learn from Gabe, though, is that just because you can have fun playing "kids games", we wouldn't recommend trying to find other kids to <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2005/03/31">play with</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/14/pa-surfs-up-not-just-for-kids/">PA: Surf's Up not just for kids.</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Jun 2007 13:15:00 EST. Retro titles from our "mispent youth", as Peter Moore so elegantly put it, are usually somewhere in the neighbourhood of 15 to 25 years old. Sure, they may get reskinned with some extra pixels per sprite, but the vast majority are the same game they were when they were on early consoles or in cabinets. Should they be treated the same by reviewers as retail games, or should the fact that these are pieces of gaming history give them a little grace? After all, if you don't like retro titles, haven't played the original game, or didn't enjoy the title, you could always <em>not buy it</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/13/tycho-retro-games-shouldnt-be-reviewed/">Tycho: Retro games shouldn't be reviewed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 13 Jun 2007 23:45:00 EST. Friday's offering takes a look at some of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/07/vampire-rain-demo-available-in-canada-not-u-s/">less</a> than <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/07/tenchu-z-demo-sneaks-onto-xblm/">stellar</a> offerings supplied, in the simple form of the controller layout shown during the loading screen for the fictitious demo of <em>Starfire Saga: Laserion.</em> Obviously this takes a jab at some of the more convoluted controllers found in games. Our favorites are the controls found for the Back, Start, and A buttons, although there are a bunch of hidden gems to be found. Any button assignments make you crack a smile, or even a <em>smirk</em>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/11/penny-arcade-disses-demos/">Penny Arcade disses demos</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 11 Jun 2007 08:15:00 EST. Unfortunately, other types gaming don't have this, and when you start blurring the line between such forms of entertainment, there's bound to be a clash, right? Well, the guys at PA seem to <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/06/06">think</a> so with the recent <a href="http://www.wizkidsgames.com/wk_article.asp?cid=41237&amp;frame=company">announcement</a> of <em>Halo Clix</em>. <a href="http://halo.bungie.org/">HBO</a> community member turned Bungie employee KP seems pretty <a href="http://carnage.bungie.org/haloforum/halo.forum.pl?read=807650">convinced</a> about their source material. Does this one tickle your funny bone?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/06/oh-teh-noes-1-not-another-penny-arcade-comic-that-relates-to-ou/">Oh teh noes!1! In particular, the Troll, and the potential hazards that the RNA Corporation has to take into account when employing such a metahuman. In Tycho's post, he gives his <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/2007/06/04">take</a> on the game's party system and gameplay and continues to support and recommend the title in spite of <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/shadowrun">mediocre</a> reviews. Either way, he reminds us that the demo is coming out <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/22/shadowrun-demo-coming-june-6th/">tomorrow</a>. Speaking of, are any of you still on the fence going to download the demo and give it a shot? We know that some of us here and Fanboy Towers made promises in regards to giving the demo the attention it deserves.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/05/penny-arcade-takes-on-shadowruns-races/">Penny Arcade takes on Shadowrun's races</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 05 Jun 2007 10:30:00 EST.
