Like the Yankees, Lakers and Manchester United, EA is one of those organizations that is defined by both a legacy of success, and a legion of critics," wrote Moore in an official post on the EA site. "Are we really the 'Worst Company in America?' I'll be the first to admit that we've made plenty of mistakes."

He continued, "These include server shut downs too early, games that didn't meet expectations, missteps on new pricing models and most recently, severely fumbling the launch of SimCity. We owe gamers better performance than this."
Continue reading EA responds to 'Worst Company in America' poll: 'We can do better. Segerstrale had joined the company as a co-founder of Playfish, which EA picked up about four years ago for $300 million. The division has been leaking executives, with two of Playfish's other co-founders leaving last year.

With Segerstrale's departure, EA Digital will be transferred under the direction of good old Peter Moore, who will now oversee all of EA's revenue groups, including Global Publishing, Global Media Solutions, Worldwide Customer Experience, and Mobile and Social Publishing. That's a lot of responsibility already, but you know Peter - he can always do Moore.
EA's Digital EVP and Playfish co-founder departs originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 Feb 2013 05:00:00 EST. It just didn't say which one. In an investor conference call, CEO John Riccitiello broke the news that EA is moving the launch to Q1 of fiscal 2013 (January-March of this year).

Later, during the Q&A portion, COO Peter Moore called it "a major title based on a major piece of the EA brand IP." EA recently acquired KlickNation, rebranding it BioWare Social, but that just happened last month -- likely not enough time to even think a game would be ready for this quarter. EA also releases social games through Playfish, EA Play, and EA Sports.
EA delays unspecified social game based on 'major' EA IP originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 Feb 2012 19:15:00 EST. In a year where EA has seen its business model shifting away from the physical to a greater reliance on digital dollars, some similarly massive changes are shaking up the company rolodex. As detailed by CEO John Riccitiello today:

Peter Moore is now the Chief Operating Officer of the company, a role vacated by John Schappert in April

Current EA Games label boss Frank Gibeau will serve as President of all the EA labels

Bioware will become the fourth EA label, joining EA Games (DICE, Visceral, Criterion, EA Partners, etc.), EA Sports (Madden, FIFA, Fight Night) and EA Play (Maxis, The Sims, MySims)

Barry Cottle moves from executive VP to of EA Interactive to heading the division, which now includes Playfish, Pogo, EA Mobile, EA's partnership with Hasbro, Asian mobile and online games and PopCap

It's a big move, but it leaves plenty of unanswered questions for now. For starters, we're not sure who'll take over for pitchman Peter Moore at EA Sports. We're also curious if the BioWare label is a branding augmentation only, or something more substantive.
Peter Moore now COO at EA, more execs change jobs originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 04 Aug 2011 17:37:00 EST. Peter Moore just took to the stage at the Microsoft E3 2011 press conference to announce some new Kinect-compatible sports titles. Four upcoming games will sport Kinect functionality -- PGA, Madden, FIFA and "one we'll announce later."

Moore did not reveal how Kinect would be utilized in these games, though he did hint at being able to physically call audibles in Madden.
Four EA Sports games in 2011 to feature Kinect originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 12:57:00 EST. The latest episode of South Park is ... well, one of the stranger recent episodes of South Park, an observation you probably made after reading its title: "Crack Baby Athletic Association." In the show's typical fashion, the episode is a hyperbolic, metaphorical critique of the treatment of professional and collegiate athletes, and their complaints of being denied royalties for media which feature their likeness. One target of the show's scathing barbs was EA Sports, headed up by one "Mr. Peters," a mock-up (pictured above!) of real-life studio president Peter Moore.

You can watch the full episode for free online over at South Park Studios. We've contacted EA Sports to see if it has any comment on the show -- considering it's South Park's second send-up of the developer, we imagine its hackles might be a little raised.
South Park lampoons EA Sports, Peter Moore, athletic royalties and everything else originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 May 2011 15:30:00 EST.

"Today we're looking at a seamless experience across all our franchises." EA Sports president Peter Moore made this remark while outlining the label's future today during the MI6 video game marketing conference in San Francisco. "Regardless of where you are, what platform you have, what game you're playing, that you're constantly connected," he said, adding that he sees EA Sports games of the future being "connected experiences that recognize users and reward them for playing multiple games."

The concept itself certainly isn't new, but EA's take on "persistence" (aka cloud data) sounds promising. "We recognize [players] -- that's the persistence -- and their presence there gets its achievements and carries them from iteration to iteration," said Moore. "It's no longer 'buy Madden 11 and then buy Madden 12 and start from scratch,' it is 'take everything that you've done and migrate it and move it along.'"

Moore stopped short of naming which titles will usher in this new dynamic for his brand, but did say it's not far off -- and doesn't just encompass EA's sports label. "It's not far away. It's certainly within [our] grasp," Moore said, explaining that "this is how we envision the future of our industry, and this is how we at EA Sports individualize and personalize this as the future of our brand and ultimately the future of what Electronic Arts as a whole is going to do across all of its titles."
EA Sports planning 'persistent' gamer profiles across its titles, all of EA to follow originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 21:00:00 EST. Buried at the bottom of a press release for NBA Jam: On Fire Edition -- a downloadable title coming this fall to PSN and XBLA -- is news that the next "real" basketball game from EA Sports won't be here until fall 2012. Nothing makes for a better distraction than (NBA Jam: On) Fire!

"As planned, our next NBA simulation title is in development at our Tiburon Studio in Orlando," EA Sports president Peter Moore said in the announcement. "We have top talent on the game, and we're giving the new development team time to deliver a superior experience. We're making great strides and looking forward to launching a new game next year." That lesson about giving the team plenty of time was learned the hard way: through the near-release and scrapping of NBA Elite 11.

This means it'll be three full years between EA basketball sims, during which time 2K Sports will enjoy its status as the Harlem Globetrotters of the basketball video game market.
Continue reading Next EA basketball simulation game coming fall 2012

Next EA basketball simulation game coming fall 2012 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 17:03:00 EST. At journalism camp, we all learned to ask "the hard questions." For your pals at Joystiq, given the opportunity to chat with Peter Moore following EA Sports' last-minute delay of NBA Elite 11 and the subsequent rush to make NBA Jam on Xbox 360 and PS3 a fully featured product in and of itself, we'd have had no shortage of questions. "How are you going to bring the HD versions of the game up to feature parity with the Wii this year?" "With NBA 2K 11 gathering accolades, are you concerned that changing the NBA Live formula and then delaying it is ceding ground to the competition?" And the list goes on.

Fox News' Jenna Lee, given the same opportunity, asked the hard hitting question that we -- perhaps because of our single-minded focus on video games or perhaps because of our shortage of political acumen -- never thought to ask: "Is this a bipartisan game though, Peter?"

You see, President Obama, in addition to actually playing basketball, not being ancient and being president of the country, has some special moves in the game, clearly illustrating political bias on the part of the liberal fat cats at EA. In the interest of defusing this tense political standoff, we'd like to point out that Ms. Palin appears to have her own special move: playing men's basketball.
Unsurprisingly, EA Sports president Peter Moore agrees that sales of Tiger Woods 2011 were "disappointing, in particular on the Wii, " but believes there's hope for the title yet. Moore told Eurogamer that the game will be "well represented as part of the Move launch," and that the upcoming Ryder Cup during the first week of October (and seen in the franchise for the first time this year) will bring it back into the spotlight to tack on some extra numbers. As for whether the golfer's well-publicized personal problems may have affected the video game franchise, Moore says that's a "consumer call," and reiterates EA's support of the star.

Moore also talked a bit about the much-reviled Online Pass system, saying that 60 to 70 percent of players have accessed the Online Pass content so far, without going into detail about how many used codes or paid outright. Finally, he believes that we're currently in a mid-cycle market in terms of console sales. Prices are still too high -- especially when you include the Kinect and Move hardware -- he says, to reach the video game console sweet spot of "$199 or below." Until we get there, Moore is convinced, "We're nowhere near mass-market pricing."
Moore: Tiger Woods sales 'disappointing' originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Sep 2010 22:00:00 EST. EA Sports covers nearly all the big sports: football, soccer, golf, basketball, hockey, etc. But will it ever tackle a more niche interest? Its president, Peter Moore, certainly sees that as a possibility -- just not on the current HD consoles.

Obviously, the main obstacle in the path of these smaller sports is development cost. "It would be very difficult for us to justify putting a full-blown next-gen team on with all the associated costs," Moore explained to Edge. However, he does see an alternative. "Can we do a browser based version? So I think the answer's yes, but we're not there yet ... Digitize that content and provide experience for - and I don't want to call them lesser sports - but regional sports that find it difficult to scale."

EA is already dabbling in a number of browser-based experiences, including FIFA Online and Tiger Woods Online. With its continued expansion in the area (see: the recent acquisition of Playfish), the future certainly holds a lot of possibilities. Who knows -- the lower barrier of entry may one day enable EA Sports to make that lacrosse game we've been dreaming up.
EA Sports' Moore envisions browser-based games for smaller sports originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 02 Sep 2010 01:00:00 EST. Electronic Arts has officially launched Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online, its free-to-play version of the popular golf game. Players can sign in with an EA persona and play a limited number of featured courses for free (St. Andrews and Sheshan are the two currently available), while earning XP and money for the in-game Pro Shop. Alternatively, for you fat cats out there, packages of points are also available for $10, $20, and $40 that can be spent on in-game items or rounds of golf at locked courses.

The game also offers group tournaments and friend-to-friend messaging -- essentially, it's very much EA's attempt to bring the successful Battlefield Heroes model to a new audience. In an interview with CNBC today, Peter Moore made it clear that they're behind both star Tiger Woods and this game. The free-to-play title is designed to pull in an audience of "40-year golfers, mostly male," Moore said, adding that "it's our job to upsell them." If EA Sports can do that as well as the Battlefield Heroes team has, then we may see even more of these free-to-play online titles from the company.
EA launches free-to-play Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online, stands by its man originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Apr 2010 22:02:00 EST. In a time-honored Peter Moore tradition, the EA Sports head recently opened up for an interview on a variety of subjects in the game industry. This time, the oft fake-tattooed gentleman exposited on the future of OnLive and his company's investment in the upcoming PlayStation Motion Controller (supposedly named "Arc"). "I don't know about OnLive," Moore told CVG, responding to the question of whether or not the cloud gaming service will become the "iTunes of gaming." He does, however, see opportunity in burgeoning distribution and pricing methods. "If a consumer's got five bucks to spend on some cool DLC; if they love Tiger Woods but want to be able to play online and invest $10 or $15 over a period of time ... those are the things we need to look at."

As far as his interest in the "Arc" goes, he says that he's seen the hardware in action and thinks it'll be a "great complement to what's out there." He directly points out its distinction from the Wii's motion controller and reconfirms EA Sports' development of games with Sony motion in mind -- he even names tennis and golf as prime contenders as each sport lends to an "authentic sports motion" (at least with what he's seen on the Wii). Frankly, we're just about as excited as could be to finally show off our lacking sports skills as games based on sports creep closer to reality.
Peter Moore excited about PlayStation 'Arc,' unsure about OnLive originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 08 Feb 2010 20:00:00 EST. At an event in the UK this week, EA Sports head honcho Peter Moore outright refutes any possibility of his division at EA developing sports games with 3D technology in mind. In speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, the affable exec states, "Believe me, there's nothing going on right now that would say I'm ready to demo a 3D sports game." That said, on the subject of Project Natal and the Sony Motion Controller, Moore opened up to many more possibilities.

"We're getting in sync with Sony's motion controller and Project Natal with what Sony and Microsoft want to do with their publishing partners, so stay tuned for further information on that as we get closer to the date." When pressed for dates on either project, though, he remained cagey, saying "I do not know when they're launching ... certainly Sony has made no public pronouncement at all, and Microsoft has said 'holiday', which obviously gives fudge room." So! Madden Natal: confirmed? Not quite. The exec does note that "core intellectual property" would be heading up the motion charge "in some shape of fashion on those platforms." And considering Moore has already confirmed a version of EA Sports Active for Natal, we have to imagine (and hope) that he has more of that kind of thing in mind.

Moore: EA Sports has no plans for 3DTV now, focusing on Natal, Motion Controller originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 29 Jan 2010 16:20:00 EST. "If it's got a great screen, some buttons, you can turn it on and it connects to the Internet, it's got the ability to be a games machine." That's what EA Sports president Peter Moore shared on Apple's heavily rumored tablet device, predicted to be unveiled during a media event this Wednesday. Moore recently told Bloomberg that his knowledge on the project was derived from media reports -- in which case he must know about the connection drawn between EA and the unannounced device's game offerings.

In the same report, Jon Kromrey, general manager of Apple games at Namco Networks America (which recently trumpeted 23 million downloads on iPhone and iPod Touch), expresses a notable amount of optimism regarding the platform's gaming possibilities. "I'm having fun thinking about all the wonderful things we can do with the device when it's announced," he said. You know people have had enough speculation the moment they start saying "when."

If you've had trouble keeping track of the nigh-mythical tablet's history, head over to Engadget for a comprehensive summary. Joystiq will be attending Apple's media event tomorrow (psst, we cover games!) so expect to hear more then -- even if it's just a really powerful paintball gun.
EA, Namco Networks gauge 'Apple Tablet' gaming possibilities originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Jan 2010 21:40:00 EST. EA Sports head honcho Peter Moore is all about digital distribution. During a panel on monetization at the PLAY Berkley Digital Media Conference this past weekend (as reported by IGN), Moore extolled the many virtues of a digitally distributed future, when discs are a long-forgotten remnant of an old business model. "I'd say the core business model of video games is a burning platform ... absolutely," Moore said.

Thankfully for all of us disc-owning fools, Moore doesn't believe we'll be seeing a digital distribution-exclusive business model next week. "As an industry, I still think we may be as many as a decade away from saying goodbye to physical discs," he said, positing that Microsoft would likely be the first to release a download-only console (surely, not to be confused with a digital-format portable system or pc-based device). In the meantime, EA continues to ship 125-130 million discs each year while moving toward Moore's envisioned future.
Moore talks digital distribution; disc-based business model 'a burning platform' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 19 Oct 2009 12:58:00 EST. With this being Sept. 9, 2009 and all, you're probably going to be seeing a lot of looks back at the Dreamcast, which burst forth from the belly of the Saturn's rotting corpse 10 years ago today. Well, that is until the embargo ends on the Dreamcast 2 announcement at 9 p.m. ... Oh, crap. Forget you heard anything.
To distract you, here are Peter Moore remembrances of the system (with a liberal dose of rationalizing EA's lack of support for it, of course). He also clears up the important point of who finally pulled the plug on the console. (No, not the PS2, wiseguy. And shame on you for speaking ill of the dead!)
EA's time with the NASCAR series has come to an end, at least for the time being, says EA Sports boss Peter Moore. Speaking with GameSpot UK, Moore said that the sports division of the mega-publisher has "no plans right now" to develop a new NASCAR title. Since debuting in 1997, EA Sports has developed nearly 20 NASCAR based racing games -- ending with the Wii-exclusive NASCAR Kart Racing in early 2009.

According to Moore, the company was forced to make "tough trade-offs," sending an undisclosed number of NASCAR developers to work on the upcoming -- and controversial -- EA Sports MMA title. Thankfully, EA has filled any void we'd have for the loss of one racing franchise with no less than sixteen Need for Speed games by the end of 2010*.

*We're exaggerating. We hope.
Moore: 'No plans right now' for new NASCAR installment originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 Sep 2009 02:00:00 EST. "We're never not interacting with our community," Peter Moore recently claimed at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival, MCV UK reports. Apparently the EA Sports prez was advocating the need for more community engagement and developer transparency in the gaming industry, saying, "We needed to get away from the 'dark science' days of making games, when we'd just lob the consumer a screenshot on the odd afternoon."

It's reported that he also argued for early and frequent marketing for games, adding that some publishers still don't understand the necessity for sustained engagement. He posits that community interaction and openness is key, though Moore admits he's had to develop a "thick skin" due to some forumgoers on the EA Sports blogs calling him "ugly." Aww, sorry Peter. We still love ya, buddy!
Peter Moore asks for transparency in marketing, doesn't mind being called ugly originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 26 Aug 2009 06:00:00 EST. Aside from stressing the amount of effort that EA Sports is currently putting into the development of upcoming grappler MMA, Peter Moore had nothing but kind words for the sport while talking to Fight Game host Mike Straka (full interview after the break). The real elephant in the room, though, is clearly the less than wonderful relationship between UFC prez Dana White and Moore's development studio -- but when he was asked about the subject, Moore shrugged it off. "Not really my issue ... Dana [White] had come to EA well before I was there."

In addition to doing his best to dodge any flame stoking on Straka's part, Moore pointed out the recent announcement of a newly signed Randy Couture to the game's roster, as well as Jay "The Thoroughbred" Hieron, bringing the MMA player count up to five if our math is right. Applying that same math to the amount of UFC fighters with jobs, the league seems to have just lost two more candidates. Can't we all just get along, fellas?

[Thanks, xFenixKnightx!]
Continue reading Fox 'Fight Game' interviews Peter Moore on MMA, war with UFC

Fox 'Fight Game' interviews Peter Moore on MMA, war with UFC originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 16 Aug 2009 20:30:00 EST. Speaking at the Edinburgh Interactive Conference this week, Peter Moore explained how EA Sports changed its business strategy in order to address a growing female demographic. According to Moore, the arrival of the Wii changed everything, thanks to its focus on gameplay over graphics. "We didn't even have arms any more, never mind superior graphics," says more, adding that games "became more about getting up off the couch." This led EA Sports to change its business model.

Moore notes that EA pulled in $150 million "by talking to the female consumer and providing a solution to someone who perhaps can't get to a gym, or afford one, through EA Sports Active." He adds that it's "not only great business" for EA, but it's "changing people's lives through a game." He concludes that EA is "delighted" to be talking to girls and women.

We'll bet the company is delighted. So delighted that it "indefinitely" delayed the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions Grand Slam Tennis in order to push out an expansion for EA Sports Active.
Activism: Moore 'delighted' to talk to female gamers originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 13 Aug 2009 20:40:00 EST. Gamasutra has published a very lengthy interview with EA Sports guru Peter Moore, in which he discusses the current plans of the label and the strategies behind sports game development and publishing. Perhaps most interesting are Moore's thoughts on the new motion control technology revealed by Sony and Microsoft during E3. Moore speaks about the possibilities of the new motion controllers, saying they will impact EA Sports "very positively."

Moore says that the company is already making plans to bring its "licensed product" and its "fitness product" to these new interfaces. Specifically, Moore imagines how a game like Fight Night or the upcoming EA Sports MMA would work with them, saying, "if it were in a first-person mode it would be very very cool." Agreed. He calls the new motion controllers a "huge opportunity."

Other topics in the interview range from the possibilities for smaller, regional titles (like cricket), the future of the Madden series and how EA plans to keep EA Sports Active ... um ... active in consumers' minds. Incidentally, this is the same interview in which Moore stated that Metacritic scores aren't necessarily relevant to the sales of Wii titles.
Peter Moore on the state of EA Sports, motion control originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 22 Jun 2009 23:30:00 EST. Apparently, for the Nintendo Wii (according to Lost Winds developer David Braben), the folks reviewing Wii games are the wrong people for the job. Responding to comments made by EA Sports' Peter Moore earlier this month regarding low metacritic scores for Wii games and its less than serious effect on sales numbers of said games, Frontier Developments head David Braben told Eurogamer that, "Most reviewers are what are often called 'core gamers' - and these family-focused games tend to appeal less to them."

And he makes a good point. If Joystiq's readership is primarily "core gamers," what's the point in covering casual fare meant for more mainstream crowds? Braben continues, "It throws up a difficult dilemma for those reviewers ... are they reviewing the game for those people likely to play it, or for those people who form the bulk of their readership?" We put it to you, Joystiq loyalists: Continue to cover games intended for a "casual," more mainstream audience (as well as more "hardcore" titles), or focus on "core" games coverage exclusively?

One developer told Eurogamer that how a Wii game does is contingent entirely upon marketing, calling Wii games "pure risk." "A lot of these games that you think are the perfect game for Wii don't sell because companies don't have the money to market them," the developer said. "Whereas Nintendo is spending gazillions of dollars marketing their games."

Michael Pachter suggested that review scores aren't important because many Wii owners don't read reviews. ""I think that Metacritic scores are irrelevant for people who don't look at them - how's that for obvious?" Pachter said. "While there are many Wii owners who are hardcore and who care very much about scores, there are many - perhaps half - who are quite casual, and wouldn't know Metacritic if it fell on them." He offered games like Carnival Games and Jillian Michaels Fitness Ultimatum as examples of successful titles with little critical acclaim.

However, 2D Boy's Kyle Gabler offers an instance in which Metacritic scores and reviews do make a difference: indie games, like his own World of Goo, which happens to be the third highest-rated game on Wii. He compares mainstream games to Will Smith movies, which draw audiences without reviews.

"But for indie guys like us, Metacritic and review scores matter a lot," Gabler said. "In fact we link directly to them from our web site. So does Steam. It makes a lot of sense - potential players don't feel comfortable dishing out cash for some random unknown indie game without an aggregate thumbs-up from solid reviewers."
The industry chimes in on the importance of reviews for Wii games originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 18 Jun 2009 09:35:00 EST. We've heard stories of PR reps and devs obsessing over Metacritic scores, but EA Sports' Peter Moore's not sweating them, at least when it comes to Wii games. Noting that some titles in the low 70s can still move millions upon millions of units, Moore says that the people buying casual games and health titles like EA Sports Active aren't getting their info from Metacritic.

Moore's bigger concern? User reviews on Amazon. We'd like to snicker, but that's how we buy vacuums, so what do we know?
Moore says Metacritic not so relevant to Wii sales originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Jun 2009 13:00:00 EST. Our old buddy Peter Moore doesn't spit fire as often as he used to now that he's at EA Sports. But that doesn't mean he won't bring it on occasion. Why look, just recently, Moore told MCV that he wanted E3 to reclaim its "strut and swagger" explaining "If there was ever a time when our industry needs to look confident and optimistic, it is now."

Moore was openly hostile to the expo last year, calling it "soulless." Whether or not this year's iteration will have enough soul for P-Moore will remain to be seen until next week.
Peter Moore looks for E3 to 'return to its roots' originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 May 2009 23:00:00 EST. MCV reports that Peter Moore, head of EA Sports, will be delivering the opening keynote of the Edinburgh Interactive Festival this year. Moore's address will discuss the reshaping of the EA Sports brand, which has recently expanded its casual offerings, most notably with EA Sports Active and the All Play series of sports games. Considering Moore's role in crafting the new EA Sports, his panache and his ... um ... British-ness, we'd say he's a crackerjack pick for the festival.

Our personal advice for Peter's address: You might want to skip the whole Facebreaker thing.
Peter Moore to deliver opening keynote at EIF 2009 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 19 May 2009 19:30:00 EST. Speaking to GI.biz, Peter Moore shared some of his thoughts on digital distribution and the future of games at retail. When asked whether we might see a day when yearly sports titles are released as downloadable patches instead of on retail discs, Moore said that Electronic Arts is trying many different things in the online space -- such as 3-on-3 NHL Arcade and NCAA March Madness Edition -- but has "no plans" to change its core business model. Moore stated further that moving to an update-only model for annual sports titles is "not as easy as it sounds" and that the data in a new sports title amounts to much more than a simple patch.

Still, Moore believes -- as he did in his Dreamcast days -- that online is the future of the gaming business. Concerning retail, Moore noted that things like Xbox Live subscription cards are a good way for retailers to become part of online distribution. Regarding used games, Moore doesn't seem concerned with putting a stop to the practice, instead saying that publishers must find ways to monetize such consumers. Said Moore, "They still log-on, and we get access to them, so how do we sell them stuff?"

Our suggestion: Rename all EA sports games Madden. That ought to do it.
Peter Moore on digital distribution, used game sales originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 May 2009 03:00:00 EST. In the past, Peter Moore has hinted at the tenuous relationship between the company he helms (EA Sports) and Nintendo's three-DVD-wide home console (the Wii). Yesterday, the leader of the highly athletic development studio fully acknowledged EA Sports' lackluster sales performance on the Wii in an interview with Eurogamer, stating, "when I look at the attach rate on the Wii of our software to where I think we should be, we're under-performing still, we need to do much better."

Moore is hoping to claim a few extra slices of that sweet Wii pie with the studio's upcoming MotionPlus-infused sports titles, Tiger Woods 10 and Grand Slam Tennis. Of course, we can't have a story about Mr. Moore without one of his trademarked Awesomely Ostentatious Quotes: "Those two titles couldn't come at a better time for us, nor for Nintendo quite frankly." Oh, yeah. That one's going up on the fridge.
Peter Moore says EA Sports is 'under-performing' on the Wii originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 30 Apr 2009 23:00:00 EST. If EA Sports head honcho Peter Moore knows one thing really well, it's handling controversy surrounding his particular division of EA and the PC games market. After getting in trouble last year with PC gaming football fans for choosing not to produce Madden '09 on PC, he's back in it this year, telling Edge Magazine, "The business model right now, shipping a physical disc for the PC, simply isn't working for us."

He's explained in the past his company's reasons for choosing as such, citing low sales numbers and PC gamers trending towards console sports gaming, and this time is no different. "I've got to find innovative ways to bring our content to life on the PC and online is the way that that's going to happen," he claims. Sounds like EA Sports has some digital distribution ideas up it's collective sleeve then, eh?
EA Sports' Peter Moore: Current PC business model isn't working for us originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 30 Apr 2009 14:30:00 EST. During a panel at the MI6 Games Marketing Summit, Peter Moore talked about EA Sports' philosophy when it comes to Wii. He warned against unnecessary ports, stating that it's wrong to "simply take what you're doing on the PS3 or Xbox 360 and port - that's a dirty word - down to the Wii," noting that EA Sports learned this the hard way. Now, through things like the All-Play brand, EA Sports is starting to develop experiences specifically for that console from the ground up.

There's more to it than just that, as Moore points to a need for the company to develop "lifestyle" games, which is where EA Sports Active comes in. He says this game will help the company expand from the males that comprise the majority of its audience. Not that Moore wants to alienate them, though. EA Sports wouldn't exist without them.
MI6: Peter Moore talks capturing Wii crowd, expanding reach originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 09 Apr 2009 19:30:00 EST. In one of the least surprising stories you're likely to read today, publishers seem to agree that their lives would be a lot better if Sony could knock a couple hundred bones off the price of the PS3. That's the word from Bloomberg today, who nabbed quotes from the likes of EA Sports' Peter Moore, who admitted, "Sony obviously still has a ways to go with their pricing," and Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot, who added, "Anytime a console manufacturer reduces the price, software publishers benefit."

We'd love to make a snide comment here about EA and Ubisoft having nothing to lose from a PS3 price cut, but SCEA marketing boss Peter Dille beat us to it, commenting, "Everybody in the development community would love for the PS3 to be free, so they could just sell razor blades."

We can empathize with both sides, but it does seem to us that Sony needs to do something big to get back in the game. What do you think?

[Via CVG]
Publishers push Sony for PS3 price cut originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 16 Mar 2009 11:50:00 EST. Then Peter Moore saw it on some list and really didn't know what it was. Tunes change, however.

Peter recently gave the game's demo a whirl and came away impressed. He found "a ton to admire" and said it was "full of impressive physics that make for an elegant and somewhat addictive experience." He promises more on his experience with the game later, so that's all he said for now.

If you're interested in more from EA, like NASCAR Kart Racing, he goes on about it later in his blog post. This story was picked up by numerous sites, but one detail that wasn't so heavily reported were Moore's views on the game that came tenth, World of Goo. Moore said he was "surprised to see [World of Goo] up so high," despite ... not having played it.

For their part, 2D Boy (former employees of EA, no less) described the remark as a "compliment," and said they were "honored that World of Goo has crept this far into mainstream awareness." The pair have also confessed to deriving a "sick pleasure" from an "industry bigwig's indignant, self-righteous incredulity," though we suspect tongues were firmly placed in cheeks at this stage.
Peter Man Tell 'Em has kicked off '09 with a wildly entertaining review of Eurogamer's "Top 50 Games of 2008," headlining with the question on all of our minds: Where The FIFA? From the outset, Peter Moore's rant makes it clear that his is a man's world, summoning well wishes for his distinctly heterosexual males club -- also known as EA Sports Nation: "I hope you all have had a restful few days and have been able to get your sports fix in front of the TV without your wife/girlfriend/mom/mum giving you a bad time ... "

In Peter Man's real talk, there is no place for the seemingly sissy; games like Bangai-O Spirits or World of Goo. And Tomb Raider in the Top 50? No thanks. Who wants to play as ... a girl? (Note: Please excuse Boom Blox and Mirror's Edge's apparent lack of manliness -- trust Moore, it's in the game.) But, beneath the posturing exterior, Peter Man drops hints of latent insecurity. Though Moore has membership in an elite fraternity of buff game execs (true story: the presidency was decided by an arm wrestling match between Moore and Strauss -- guess who won?), he is just as susceptible as the rest of us are to body image issues perpetuated by games. How could Peter Man not be threatened by the sheer power of the Bangai-O bots? Or the Goo's killer combo of unrivaled flexibility and unnerving strength? Or Ms. Lara's emasculating sexuality?

The real tell, though, is this: "I was surprised to see Wii Fit included [at #25], which I thought would make the top 10," writes Moore. Clearly, this is a man obsessed with mastering the physical potentials of the body. A perfect fit for EA Sports, then. And a great businessman to boot. While the media continues the "Wii dissing," Peter Man is heaping on the Nintendo praise. After all, a man's world is measured by units. And no one put more units in gamers' hands -- heck! under their feet, too -- than Nintendo did last year.
Peter Moore: 'WTF? Apparently the smiling athletes and "All-Play" control schemes are working, but not so much that sales of the Wii versions of their sports franchises are catching up to those on the other consoles.

"The challenge we face is that that consumer gets Wii Sports right out of the box," Moore said, "and that's a sports experience that's good enough for a lot of people."

Moore seems happy with the status of the Wii games as "secondary" versions, and selling them as companion pieces for multi-console owners. " I think there's going to be a very strong multi-console ownership in homes. And I think that's bearing out." It's an interesting strategy, and one that Moore hopes will cause sales of the Wii games to grow. It's also interesting for Moore to so frankly discuss the lack of market dominance on the Wii.

Does anyone else think that if there's one segment of the video game market that isn't dominated by EA Sports, it isn't such a bad thing? In fact, it's nice to have a bit of variety in the industry.
More Moore on EA Sports originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 24 Nov 2008 20:10:00 EST. "The challenge we face is that that consumer gets 'Wii Sports' right out of the box and that's a sports experience that's good enough for a lot of people," EA Sports president Peter Moore told MTV Multiplayer. "That is a challenge for us at times."

That's the explanation for the notable disparity in sales between EA Sports titles aimed at the casual-friendly Wii, and those released on other systems. While selling over two million copies on PS2, Xbox 360 and PS3 combined last August, Madden NFL 08 managed around 100,000 copies on the Wii. Moore seems pleased with the success among the hardcore and sees indications of a "very strong multi-console ownership," but admits that there is work yet to be done. "We're going to keep pounding away," he said. "We know what we were doing wrong."

Well, that's easy then. Stop doing that. You can hire us at your earliest convenience, Mr. Moore.
EA Sports' Moore tackling the 'challenge' of Wii Sports originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 24 Nov 2008 16:20:00 EST.
