American Football fans will have to turn to one of of their consoles or portables to get their next Madden fix, as Peter Moore has revealed EA's cancellation of Madden '09 on PC, citing "serious business challenges" in releasing sports titles on home computers.

The title will still appear on PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, DS and PSP, leaving PC Madden fans feeling a bit left out. Moore notes that Madden '09 is not the only PC title receiving the axe, and that it represents a larger decision by EA Sports to cut back on their number of PC releases. It's unknown if EA will continue to release future versions of Madden on the PC, or if this is the end of Madden on the PC altogether. Luckily, gamers can still experience the latest iteration of EA's flagship sports franchise on a plethora of platforms. Just not on the computer.
EA scraps Madden '09 on PC originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 Apr 2008 17:30:00 EST. First of all, Peter won't be joining the ranks of video game journalism, but will instead be posting for the benefit of the EA Sports community. Second, it's not a dedicated blog per se, but more of a glorified forum post. Still, Peter Moore will be taking regular chunks of his schedule and dedicating them to communicating with the masses. Entitled Inside the Game, the blog serves as a soap box for Moore to share whatever his heart desires. In the first installment of the blog, his heart desires to go back in time and get the Patriots to win the Super Bowl. He also takes some time to mention FaceBreaker and take a few good-natured potshots at Major Nelson.

The blog mostly serves as an introduction to the concept, so don't go looking for any bombshells. Still, it's an interesting read, and hopefully Inside the Game will become a regular source for newsworthy information from EA.
Introducing Peter Moore: the blogger originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 12 Feb 2008 15:15:00 EST. Gametrailers has a pair of video interviews with Peter Moore in his new role as head of EA Sports. Watching these vids remind of exactly why we're going to miss him so much at Microsoft. However, it also gives us hope that EA will stop doing things like releasing mega-buggy versions of Madden upon unsuspecting masses. Or somewhat suspecting masses, at this point.

Anyhow, check out both parts of the video after the jump. It's worth it just for the eye-rolling from Moore when the interviewer calls him a "hero" to all the young gamers out there. He has a great view of the console war from both the publisher and manufacturer sides of the table, and near the end of part two, he talks about what's in store for the future at EA Sports. Namely, looking beyond only the North American market ... so expect more FIFA to come down the pipeline. And hopefully Scottish Caber Toss Challenge '09.
Continue reading Peter Moore talks about EA, waxes poetic

Peter Moore talks about EA, waxes poetic originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 Oct 2007 15:25:00 EST. "Hello everyone, my name is Peter Moore. As a sign of good faith, I have trapped half of my soul inside of a video game. It's actually a new feature we're working on for future EA Sports titles. We're tentatively calling it Moore's Law." No really, he wants it all and is going for it.

In an interview with the New York Times, Moore lays out his goals and vision for the EA Sports brand, hoping that he and his team can turn it into a general sports brand that could go up against others like Nike and ESPN. Moore's ambitious vision sees a future where sports camps, on-air broadcasts, retail products and stadiums (okay, maybe not stadiums) will be branded with the EA Sports logo, similar to how Nike already runs business. These are all lofty goals indeed, but we say go get 'em Peter. And if ever you get in a bind or business gets rough, get yourself some new ink and rock a sleeveless shirt around the office. The morale boost would be immeasurable.
Moore: EA Sports can take on Nike and ESPN originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 06 Sep 2007 10:00:00 EST. Most of them, surprisingly, related to the Xbox 360. A little more specifically, Moore speaks on the Xbox's progress in Japan, the importance of exclusive games, multiplatform games, and how many Xboxes Halo 3 will sell (answer: "a lot of green ones"). Moore also talks about Microsoft's expansion into the casual gaming market (Scene It and those kooky controllers), the ease of 360 development in comparison to other consoles, Final Fantasy on Xbox, and of course, whether or not he is, in fact, the Devil. In the past several years, it seems the reputation of gaming industry executives has begun to reach epic levels, proportionate, perhaps, to the spread of gaming as a culture. But we're also starting to think that maybe the corporate hype machines are getting a little out of control. What matters more, personality or product? Maybe it's just us, but it seems the lines are beginning to blur.

We can understand a healthy dose of Miyamoto-worship -- the man is a legend in the industry, and he's responsible for more of our cherished childhood memories than we'd like to admit. And sure, we love Reggie, and Iwata is the man (by that, we mean one hell of a savvy businessman), but is it really their personalities that make Nintendo what it is right now? No, it's certainly their skills ... so what's with all the executive worship that is spreading throughout gaming communities? Is it just that industry execs are out in the open more and more often, or is it something else? After all, most of the people that we're chasing in the industry are just in marketing. They're not doing much to create the things we spend our time on; they're just a face. A name. No different than mascot characters -- it's just now that we're growing up, apparently Sonic and Mario can't bear the brunt of the console wars any longer, and we've moved on to Reggie and pre-exodus Peter Moore. But let us know what you think -- that's why we're here.
Wii Warm Up: Executive power originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 19 Jul 2007 09:00:00 EST. Before Peter Moore packs up and bids Microsoft adieu to be with his family, EA Sports and a nice paycheck, Major Nelson had a chance to speak with the traveling man about his move.

Moore stresses that the move is really due to his family and is "completely unrelated" to any Xbox 360 warranty issues. The two frequently mention how they'll miss each other, and how Moore will miss his job at Microsoft. Also discussed is his guitar playing ("or lack thereof," quips Nelson). It will be a change, but as president of EA Sports, we doubt he'll even skip a beat jumping back into the limelight.

[Via X3F]
Peter Moore gives final goodbye to Major Nelson originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Jul 2007 16:25:00 EST. And Major Nelson must have shared the same feeling too, because he tracked down Mr. Moore for a twelve minute audio discussion of what he'll miss most, where he's headed and why he decided to head to EA. And for all the conspiracy theorists out there Moore specifically mentioned that this decision had nothing to do with how things are going at Microsoft, the three year warranty mess or anything else business related. He just wanted to move back home to California to be with his family and put their interests first. Listen for yourself and download Peter Moore's goodbye interview already.

And please do not cry fanboys, because Peter Moore is extremely optimistic and promises to keep in touch with the Xbox community for years to come. Collectively we bid a fond farewell to you Peter Moore as we enjoyed the time you've spent on team Xbox and we hope you enjoy spending your newly earned millions. An SEC filing has revealed that EA dropped a $1.5 million bonus on Peter Moore to help lure him into heading up their sports division. The Tattooed One got the check in recognition for the money he'd be missing out on by leaving Microsoft, though he'll have to give it all back if he leaves EA in the next two years. This is in addition to a more than half-million dollar annual salary.

You know what? Worth every penny. The kind of guy who'd take ink for your company is someone you want working for you, though it's sure to make the EA locker room even more awkward than when John Madden stumbles in and starts smacking tushes. Boy, $1.5 million had to have made Pete's decision a bit easier for him. Sure, we honestly do believe that Peter Moore is moving from Microsoft to EA to spend more time with his family, but we also think it'll be great to relax with the fam while Scrooge-McDuck-diving into a giant vat of gold coins.
Peter Moore to get $1.5 million bonus, $550,000 salary originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Jul 2007 09:56:00 EST. Moore was always opinionated, and could be seen bad-mouthing the PlayStation more than once. In fact, one time, he called the system a "Dreamcast."

Moore is now going off to EA, an important third-party partner to Sony. We're hoping he won't bring a Microsoft-flavored bias to the company (although one wonders if that's already in place). It seems that SCEA President Jack Tretton is also looking to ensure good relations with Moore: "We wish Peter the best of luck in his new role at Electronic Arts and look forward to working with him. We have an outstanding relationship with EA and their sports products have been incredibly successful on all our platforms. I am sure this will continue with Peter now at the helm."
Jack Tretton wishes Microsoft's Peter Moore "best of luck" originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Jul 2007 20:08:00 EST. Bach suggested that, in the near term, Moore's departure will have "basically no effect. Halo 3 is still Halo 3, and Don's not changing that. Peter wasn't changing that." However, if you look out two to three years, "a leader does have an impact." For example, Peter was "uniquely good at understanding the importance of communication." Bach described him as a "consummate speaker, marketer, and evangelist" for their product who did a "great job with gamers, the press and analyst community, and retail partners."

Alright, so we all know who Peter Moore is, but what about Don Mattrick? Bach said Mattrick will obviously be the new "public face" of their business, though his core talents are different from Moore's. Where Moore was focused on the marketing and strategy side, Mattrick will be focused more on their core product. So, while there was some overlap between Peter and Robbie, Bach feels that he and Don will work in slightly different ways. Of course, Don has been working as a "strategic adviser" for the Entertainment & Devices division since February after leaving EA in 2005. So, was this a groomed succession or serendipity?
Continue reading Robbie Bach and Don Mattrick talk to Joystiq about Peter Moore's departure

Robbie Bach and Don Mattrick talk to Joystiq about Peter Moore's departure originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Jul 2007 17:58:00 EST. I actually, as you may or may not know, I actually went on stage again last night down in west Hollywood, and got up on the stage with the guys and had a good time. Once I can hear the music I can play the game, you know, so I think it's a great game. I love it, I flew to Cambridge, Massachusetts about six months ago, got my first taste of it. Just knew right then we needed to make it part of the briefing, and knew I'm stupid enough to go and put a guitar around my neck and give it a go.
Continue reading X3F interview: 4 minutes in the dark with Peter Moore

X3F interview: 4 minutes in the dark with Peter Moore originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 14 Jul 2007 18:10:00 EST. We got another opportunity to catch up with our pal Peter Moore, the man at the top of the heap over at Microsof'ts Xbox division. We chatted it up about the usual stuff: games, Microsoft's E3 presence, the 360 warranty debacle, and what's up with all the special edition stuff Microsoft keeps pumping out.

So, any new tattoos this year?

None. Out of limbs. You were there the other night...

What, no chest piece? You've got legs, too.

No, my PR handlers would -- well, I'm game for a lot of stuff, and then they go, "No, I don't think so."

You could do full sleeves, the back...

I think the next thing would be what's (horribly) called a tramp stamp... [laughter]

So no tramp stamp for Peter Moore, unfortunately. So last time when we spoke with you last year, your competition hadn't launched yet. So you guys were kind of in a unique position to be the first next gen company out of the gate. Your system, you know you have a lot of second wave titles showing up. Even though the Wii was certainly a phenomenon at last year's E3, there was a lot of excitement about the Xbox. So now here we are, a little over a year later obviously and your competition has launched, in your own press conference your materials show that the Wii is -- not by much -- outselling the 360.

Numbers don't lie!

So where do you think the 360 stands in terms of your competition? You have the Wii that's actually outselling the 360 and you have the PlayStation 3 which obviously isn't although, sales have increased after the price drop. So where...

Apparently they have. I haven't seen any independent data that supports that.
Continue reading Engadget & Joystiq interview: Peter Moore, head of Xbox

Engadget & Joystiq interview: Peter Moore, head of Xbox originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Jul 2007 17:02:00 EST. Speaking to gamesindustry.biz about the new 360 warranty, Peter Moore has confirmed that Microsoft has missed the target of 12 million units. The company has sold roughly 11.6 million units, missing its goal by 400,000 units. Despite this, Moore states that Microsoft feels "really good" about the state of the Xbox. In particular, he emphasizes Microsoft's holiday lineup, and notes that it will be featured heavily at E3 next week.

MS fails to meet 12 million mark originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 06 Jul 2007 14:30:00 EST. Among the topics discussed was Microsoft's speed at reacting to the situation. While it seems like complaints have been mounting for ages, Moore notes that time was needed to "gather data and weigh the financial implications" as well as identifying the hardware problems themselves. Before you ask, no, Moore did not reveal what those problems were, nor did he reveal Xbox 360 failure percentages. According to Moore, Microsoft has "no intention" of doing such a thing, as they see "no value" in doing so. Moore also discusses the apparent disappearance of Xbox 360 Elites and why the warranty extension applies only to the Red Ring of Death and not Xbox 360s with disc scratching problems. Head over to Joystiq for the full report.
Peter Moore chats about failures, new warranty originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 06 Jul 2007 12:00:00 EST. While it may have seemed like a long time for those of us in the grips of the hyperkinetic blogosphere, Moore assures us that, for a multi-billion dollar mega-corporation like Microsoft, they acted with some celerity.

So, they've identified problems? What exactly has been killing these Xbox 360s? Moore said there were "a number of issues" that they discovered from collecting data. When reminded of the great job they've done in servicing 360s to date still hasn't stopped some people from having to get their console serviced numerous time, Moore said that they've put "fixes in place" to address them. He pointed out that Joystiq was a great conduit to that very community and extended (what sounded to us like) a sincere apology. They're fixing these systems because the level has been unacceptable of late ... and no, Microsoft has "no intention" and sees "no value" in sharing what percentage of failure there is.
Continue reading Peter Moore tells Joystiq about the new warranty program

Peter Moore tells Joystiq about the new warranty program originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 05 Jul 2007 18:07:00 EST. As such, they are changing the warranty policy worldwide to 3 years after the consoles purchase when dealing with the 3 red rings of light hardware failure on Xbox 360s. Anyone who's payed for any repairs up to this point will be reimbursed in full. This means that anyone who bought their console at launch will be covered until November 22nd 2008. On top of the press release, Peter Moore himself posted an open letter to the community on the policy change, which is included after the break, as well as a FAQ on how it's being rolled out.
Continue reading 360's Warranty extended to THREE years!

360's Warranty extended to THREE years! originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 05 Jul 2007 17:00:00 EST. If we had actually started fixing a problem people had been complaining about since our system had been released (read: Xbox 360s dying) we'd be shouting it from the rooftops. In a statement issued to GamesIndustry.biz though, Microsoft was playing it cool on rumors of additional cooling in repaired 360. (Do you see what we did there?)

"Regularly updating console components is commonplace within the industry," was the official line from the spokesperson, who then promptly declined to comment on whether or not Microsoft had done it. There's no word on whether or not the spokesperson's comically exaggerated winking was audible during the interview. If there's actually a Lorenzo's Oil for 360 heat death, we assume Microsoft's worried about opening the floodgates to the millions that might want their problem prematurely fixed. After all, as Peter Moore already told us, the company's not so much interested in preventative care as resuscitation.
Microsoft avoids 360 cooling rumors, calls hardware updates 'commonplace' originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 15 Jun 2007 09:15:00 EST. And after giving the video a watch, is it just us or do you feel just a little bit sorry for Pac-Man? Mr. Moore has quite the dirty British mouth and his vulgarities are maybe just a little unwarranted. Specifically, Moore offhandedly compares the machine to one with which he is intimately familiar: the Dreamcast. When <strike>given the opportunity to insult the PS3</strike> asked a question about the PS3's problems, Moore said, "I'm digging up my tortured past here, but remember Dreamcast?"

The implication here, obviously, is that the PS3 is failing as the Dreamcast did. We would be remiss in our duties if we didn't note that the PS3's situation is vastly different than that of the Dreamcast. SEGA was coming off the unsuccessful SEGA Saturn before it launched the initially successful Dreamcast, only to watch it get crushed under the matte black boots of the PS2. Sony, on the other hand, is coming off the incredible success of the very console that killed the Dreamcast in the first place. Still, details aside, the meaning of the comment is clear, and those, Mr. Moore, are fighting words.

Looking past the initial swipe at Sony, the interview covers a fairly substantial range of topics. These include the Xbox 360 Elite, the continued existence of the Core 360, and how Microsoft plans to expand its software lineup. Hit the "read" link to check it out.

[Via Joystiq. Speaking to Next-Generation's Colin Campbell, the Microsoft exec compares Sony's current difficulties with those he experienced with Sega on its final console. "We thought we were doing right," he says. "All of a sudden it didn't pan out."

Though we're not privy to the same lucid and possibly prophetic dreams Mr. Moore is, lumping Sony's latest effort into the same category as the Dreamcast brings with it many sticky implications, intended or not. Is Moore saying the PlayStation 3 is failing to "pan out" for Sony, less than a year into its supposed ten-year life? Sega came out of the gate strongly and promptly drove off a financial cliff like Thelma and Louise, whereas Sony is off to a slow start and has every chance of picking up the pace. Moore goes on to say that Sony's focus on the Cell processor and the Blu-ray drive was a mistake, that it "miscalculated the global consumer's appetite for the experience the offered at the price point they offered it at." But wasn't the PS2's "Emotion Engine" and DVD drive instrumental in its triumph over Moore's ex-box?

We remember when the Xbox 360 was given the Dreamcast treatment as a means to highlight impending failure, and it was as odd then as it is now. Despite the system's commercial demise under the watch of a struggling manufacturer, it enjoyed amazing first-party support and is still remembered for hosting some remarkable games and innovations. When did being compared to the Dreamcast become such a bad thing?

[Via Xbox 360 Rally]
Microsoft's Peter Moore Dreamcasts the PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 16 May 2007 14:55:00 EST. Among the more interesting questions was from a reader who had gone through two Xbox 360s within 7 months. When asked for a "straight answer" about 360 failure rates -- and whether or not they were higher than 3% -- Moore deflected the issue, saying that customers should focus on the treatment of the problem and not the problem itself. In other words, quality of customer service is more important than the quality of the product. According to Moore, "Y'know, things break, and if we've treated him well and fixed his problem, that's something that we're focused on right now." Moore further stated that he couldn't comment on specific failure rates because he was "shipping in 36 countries and it's a complex business."

Other issues discussed include Folding@Home, the shared processing initiative recently supported by the PS3. When asked whether or not the 360 would ever be used for such a purpose, Moore stated that if Microsoft believed it could aid projects like Folding@Home with the processing power of the 360, it would certainly consider it. Moore also takes time to address the Xbox 360's variety of games (or lack thereof), and the state of affairs in Japan. Satchell says "We're yet to see a really good game on Wii that really says 'OK that control kicked ass.'" We'd have to disagree, to tell the truth.

Sure, the controls for, say, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess may have tacked on and the game itself may be a port, but we don't think we could go back to playing Zelda without those controls. We think the controls present in that game will be improved as the franchise chugs along. Even if you want to side with Satchell and say there isn't any game that could be looked at as having "kickass controls" on the console right now, we're fairly sure that when a certain game by the name of Super Mario Galaxy comes out, he'll be changing his tune (we played it, it's that good).

What say you all?

Update: Pesky little 's' missed in headline.

Microsoft's Satchell disagrees with Moore, says Wii controls don't 'kick ass' [update 1] originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 03 Apr 2007 17:55:00 EST. They came back to say that they are on track to meet their 12 million shipped worldwide milestone by the end of June 2007, having shipped 10.4 million back in December. Instead, we know he's the competition, however his public attitude as of late towards Nintendo presents anything but, as he once again compliments the company and speaks about how much of a fan he is.

In the latest edition of gaming magazine EGM, during an interview Moore says he was hoping his "friend" Reggie would "send me one [a Wii]," but quickly reminds us his house is dominated by another console. Moore also goes on to say that there is no bigger franchise in gaming, to him at least, than Mario.

[Via Go Nintendo]
Peter Moore wonders why Reggie never sent him a Wii originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 13 Mar 2007 13:25:00 EST. He stated that the production team for the 360 is currently working on its successor, and are looking at what kind of computing power will be available around 2011 and 2012. That puts the lifespan of the 360 somewhere between 6 to 7 years, which is certainly better than the original Xbox's 4 years. Moore also stated that there will be support for the 360 "as long as it sells". So, that's a long way off, which is a good thing, as we are happy to see Microsoft's plans for the 360 look more long term than last time.

[Via Digg]
EGM: Moore on 360 and its successor originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 Mar 2007 12:30:00 EST. Our comrades over at 360 Fanboy are considering the possibilities for Microsoft outside of the realm of casual games.

Moore did make the point about the Wii being about an experience, after all, so the idea that Microsoft might go the motion route isn't too far-fetched. And it's not like Microsoft never "borrowed" anything before (wink, wink). But like many, we're uncertain that we'll see motion-sensitive controls on the 360. Likely, Microsoft will try something entirely new, but the possibilities there are so widespread that we're not even sure how to start. Specifically, Moore discusses the great stable of games heading to the platform -- Mass Effect, Forza 2, Too Human, etc. -- and how Microsoft plans to combat the tiny white elephant in the room, the Wii. According to Moore, Microsoft began to see the significance of the casual market when the Wii was still known as Revolution. Moore states that Microsoft's strategy is more than simply throwing more E rated games onto the 360, saying "it's more experiential than that." This quickly leads to the speculation that Microsoft may have a motion controller of its own in mind. At this point it remains pure speculation. After all, Mr. Moore could easily be talking about more games involving the Vision Camera. Whatever it is, Moore states that there will be announcements within the next couple of months. With any luck, we might just hear something during GDC next week.

Do you think Microsoft has a Wiimote up its sleeve, or is it something entirely different?

[Via Evil Avatar]
Moore: motion control on 360? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 27 Feb 2007 12:00:00 EST. During an interview with CVG, Moore commends Nintendo for the strides its made with its Wii system, stating "From a first-party point of view, it's not just about E-rated games, it's going to be about the experience that, quite frankly, Nintendo has done a tremendous job in capturing, in bringing back fun - if you will - to the gaming platforms."

And he's correct: Nintendo has brought back the fun in gaming. Sure, the Xbox 360 appeals to a lot of gamers, but maybe some of them are just playing these games for achievements and not the fun of the title. This is something which is almost guaranteed with every title that Nintendo will put out on the Wii, as well as many of the third-party offerings. Thanks for the kind words Peter, but if you think you can compete in that arena with Nintendo, we're sure you're sorely mistaken.

[via /.]
Peter Moore: Wii's success is making us rethink our strategy originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 26 Feb 2007 13:35:00 EST. It should come as no surprise then, that former head of Electronic Arts Worldwide Studios, Don Mattrick, is joining Microsoft as a "strategic adviser" to the Entertainment and Devices division. The Entertainment and Devices group houses the Xbox 360 as well as the Zune. Peter Moore was ecstatic about the announcement, claiming that he had been looking forward to working with Mattrick since he left EA in 2006. Moore -- once the head of SEGA during the Dreamcast era -- claims that there is no bad blood between himself and Mattrick. Game history buffs will remember that EA refused to support the Dreamcast, has a long rivalry with SEGA sports, and was hesitant to allow its games on Xbox Live (seems they can't get enough of it now). Moore is happy to welcome Mattick, though he admits some disdain for EA CEO, Larry Probst.

Exactly what Mattrick will be doing seems unclear though it seems he will be heavily involved in developing concepts like Xbox Live. Mattrick admits that online gaming is the biggest trend in the industry and he hopes to push Microsoft to the top of that arena.

[Via Joystiq]
Former EA head joins Microsoft originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 23 Feb 2007 15:30:00 EST. That's more or less what Peter Moore, VP of most things XBox, did in an interview with IGN. Instead of going over all the comments he made about Microsoft's strategy for the coming year (interesting in its own right, but not relevant here), we'll use the quote that will undoubtedly give Sony a real shiner.

Moore is asked about what he thinks of the other systems and if there's anything he wishes the 360 could share with them. He responds: "The innovation that the Wii is, I'm certainly a big fan of. It ties in exactly with what Nintendo needs to do. And it ties directly into their strong intellectual property that is more youth oriented and more family oriented. The PS3, I really don't know what I would look at there that we're really missing. I look at the games and I feel really good at where we stand from a portfolio point of view. The online service, [Sony's] still trying to get it up to speed and there's nothing really there that I can really point to that I wish we had. You know, certainly the price point of the PS3 isn't something that I want to emulate. It's very difficult for me to point to anything there that I think we're missing right now." Hmm, well, I know that I certainly can't see myself to style my hair in front of the 360. Where's your mirror-ability, Microsoft? Yeah... yeah, take that.

To be honest, Moore is right, but he spins it like the PS3 has been out for a year. We're still building the PS-Store... so of course it's not XBL -- that's had quite a few years, backed by the knowledge of a gigantic company based in making internet-ready operating systems. We don't have a lot of games yet, but we've got plenty of titles coming by the end of March to get excited about -- coinciding with the European launch window. As for the price, we could argue that to death, but it's been done many times before, so we'll just shrug and say: "you give the options of adding stuff on, we give you everything in one package." Calm down, Peter Moore.
Peter Moore pours gasoline on the blazing flame war originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 29 Jan 2007 14:30:00 EST. In a brief phone interview with Peter Moore, vice president of Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft, we went over the announcement and what it meant for the 360.

Moore was eager to remind us that Microsoft had met their goal of shipping 10 million Xbox 360 units, breaking the numbers down as follows: 6 million in North America; 3.1 million in Europe; and 1.3 million in the remainder of the markets it's available in (including Japan). There were no specific numbers for Japan, but he was happy to point out Gears of War's cozy spot on the Japanese sales charts.

But it's not all good numbers. They've also altered their forecast for the fiscal year ending June 30th, from a goal of 13 to 15 million Xbox 360 consoles shipped to just 12 million, leaving them a relatively attainable goal of shipping an additional 1.6 million units over the next five months. Their real goal: profitability by this time 2008. With revenues of $2.96 billion, a 76% jump from last year, and a loss of $289 million, roughly the same as last year, profitability isn't too far off.

To achieve that goal, Moore pointed to titles like Viva Pinata which, while seriously underperforming at retail, remains a critical success and "will sell for years," says Moore. Exclusive first-party content, like Gears of War and Halo 3, coupled with third-party exclusives like BioShock and Splinter Cell Convictions will continue to push hardware sales, while ancillary services like Xbox Live and microtransactions will continue to add to revenues. While Microsoft is on the road to profitability, they have a ways to go to catch up with Nintendo whose latest financial report cited a 43% profit increase. Some of the topics discussed include IPTV, gaming on Windows Vista, MMOs on 360, the importance of 1st party developers, Microsoft's hopes in Japan, and of course, a little offhanded PS3 and Wii bashing. Moore makes a particularly interesting point about the necessity of 1st party development. Takahashi points out that Microsoft doesn't have as many 1st party developers as Sony and Nintendo. Moore replies that Microsoft has many 1st party games being created by studios not owned by Microsoft. Examples of this include Bioware's Mass Effect, Silicon Knights' Too Human, and of course Epic's Gears of War. Moore notes that Microsoft has a great publishing model in which MS aids in funding and publishing externally developed titles. He further states that while these are developed by a third party, they are unmistakably 1st party 360 titles.

The interview is a little over half an hour long, and worth a listen to any dedicated 360 fanboys. Moore told the press that the Zune would be able to play video games on its extra wide screen in the future, but no sooner than July 2008. If the current Zune model is what they're thinking of using to play games, then damned if we won't be jaded. We were thinking more along the lines of an actual stand alone portable to play games ... not an MP3 player with limited input devices. Maybe this is a stepping stone to what may bloom into a full fledged Xbox portable gaming system, but something we wouldn't see for years to come. So Mr. Zune, we've realized that you aren't our Xboy. Yes it's hard, but it would be best if we just went out seperate ways.

[Via Engadget]
Zune gets games ... in 2008 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 09 Jan 2007 15:45:00 EST.
