You can see what looks like an in-game screenshot on the official timeline post, along with some concept art.

The blurb says the game was designed to be "the most realistic pinball simulation ever," complete with actual material physics and graphics running at in 60fps at 1080p (as you might have guessed from the title). There was also going to be a "Gran Turismo level of progression," designed to build as much replay value as possible.

This, says Insomniac, also explains the whole (pin)Ballz phenomenon, and the company's fascination with pinball in general. The developer will discuss the abandoned game on a future podcast. As for whether it'll ever return, Insomniac says, "The Zen Pinball games do a fantastic job anyways."
Insomniac reveals canceled 1080Pinball, 'the most realistic pinball simulation ever' originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 Mar 2012 21:00:00 EST. That's what we would call being "on the ball" ... if we were interested in terrible puns, which of course we aren't.

Windows 8 is available today in a consumer preview build, and Zen Studios' pinball game is included in the download, with the "Sorcerer's Lair" table. Of course, more tables will be sold as DLC. It's only fitting that this version of Windows, which touts some kind of Xbox Live functionality, will include one of Xbox Live's most popular games. To put it another way: free pinball!
Continue reading Pinball FX 2 included in Windows 8 consumer preview

Pinball FX 2 included in Windows 8 consumer preview originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 29 Feb 2012 21:15:00 EST. Sadly, his daughter Catherine Petrash confirmed Kordek's death to the NY Times last week. He was 100 years old.

Kordek designed his final arcade machine in 2003, based on the National Lampoon's Family Vacation films, after having spent a life crafting machines for Genco, Bally, and Williams. He started his auspicious career in 1948 with a two-flipper redesign of the pinball machine, an improvement over the previous year's six-flipper design (pioneered by Chicago's D. Gottlieb & Company). From there, Kordek went on to craft tables at Bally and Williams, such as Contact, Pokerino, and Grand-Prix.

"Pinball!" author Roger Sharpe described Kordek's impact on the world of pinball as, "comparable to D. W. Griffith moving from silent films through talkies and color and CinemaScope and 3-D with computer-generated graphics."

Kordek is survived by his daughter Catherine; by another daughter, Donna Kordek-Logazino; two sons, Frank and Richard; a sister, Florence Wozny; two brothers, Joseph and Frank; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren, according to the NYT report.

[Pinball image via Shutterstock]
Pinball wizard Steve Kordek passes away at age 100 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Feb 2012 10:30:00 EST. As if Zen Studio's Pinball FX series wasn't already enormously popular, studio reps told an audience of New York Comic Con attendees that the pinball franchise would be heading to Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation Vita, and iOS/Android "phones and tablets" at some point in 2012. Get your flippin' fingers at the ready!
He also revealed a brand new table coming this winter as part of the upcoming "Vengeance and Virtue" Marvel DLC pack, themed around the X-Men. Which apparently means it's of the "Virtue" category, though we don't think Wolverine would appreciate being called "virtuous" very much.
Zen Studios bringing Pinball FX to 3DS, Vita, mobile; shows off X-Men table originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 15 Oct 2011 16:30:00 EST. A new pinball download is lighting up the boards over at GOG.com. You might not recognize all the games collected in the Pinball Gold Pack, but considering the sheer amount of content, it's hard to argue with the math. The Pinball Gold Pack crams in five games -- Pinball Dreams, Pinball Dreams 2, Pinball Fantasies, Pinball Mania, and Pinball Illusions -- adding up to a total of twenty tables for only ten bucks.

If that's not enticing enough, you could always grab them for the historical perspective. Specifically, the games were developed by Digital Illusions (A.K.A. DICE) -- the studio behind the Battlefield series and Mirror's Edge -- all the way back in the grungy, flannel-covered decade known as the 1990s. Crank up the Nirvana while playing and you'll pretty much get the whole experience.
Shoot GOG ramp to activate pinball classics originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Feb 2011 11:45:00 EST. The development studio behind both the Pinball FX series on XBLA and Zen Pinball on PSN has just popped up on the Australian Ratings Board website under a listing for "Marvel Pinball," a "multiplatform" game. The ESRB has yet to detail it, but we get the feeling Marvel Pinball just might be a pinball game with Marvel branding and characters -- our detective work knows no bounds, we know.

Given past additions to its pinball games, Zen Studios could be planning the title as an expansion to its forthcoming Pinball FX 2. Regardless, the listing existing at all means we should be hearing more about Marvel Pinball sooner than later.
'Marvel Pinball' leaked by Australian Ratings Board originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Oct 2010 00:00:00 EST. Wondering what the official Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 table for ZEN Pinball looks like in motion? Wonder no more -- the video above will show you all of the Hayabusa-style bumper action you'll be able to find, complete with ramps, flashing lights, ninja spirits and... burning pagodas? Boy, those ZEN folks aren't really pinball traditionalists, are they? But it does look fun.

The table will bring new gameplay modes and missions along with it to the PlayStation Store on Thursday, January 14, for $2.49 (€1.99). Of course, it's DLC for the original ZEN Pinball game, so you've got to have that, too. Wait, we just rewatched it -- did Ryu just slice the ball in half? That's pretty awesome!
ZEN Pinball's Ninja Gaiden table trailer slices and dices originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 Jan 2010 20:15:00 EST. Usually, we can't fit all of the titles available for download across Nintendo platforms into the headline, but this week's NintendoWare Weekly post is an exception. Those anxious to get their hands on some digital wares will only find three games available this week -- so in the interest of keeping this train a-chuggin' along, let's get to the details.
Continue reading NintendoWare Weekly: Pinball, Gravitronix, Final Fight 2

NintendoWare Weekly: Pinball, Gravitronix, Final Fight 2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 Oct 2009 12:00:00 EST. The follow-up to the Street Fighter table pays tribute to Team Ninja's Ninja Gaiden series. The official details will be revealed on the PlayStation.Blog soon, but we're pretty sure it'll be similar to the last DLC offering.
Today's announcement of ZEN Pinball's collaboration with Capcom was certainly a bizarre, unexpected one. We chatted with ZEN Studios' managing director Zsolt Kigyossy on the surprising success of ZEN Pinball, the studio's future plans with PlayStation Network, and how the Street Fighter deal came about in the first place.

ZEN Pinball debuted as the top-selling PSN game in May. Was the team surprised by that achievement?
Not too surprised! We've been working on perfecting our ball-and-table physics for six years now, so I guess our team's passion really shines through in the game. Although, with so many new games coming out each month we couldn't simply rely on quality to make our title stand out, and for that reason we owe much of our success to the huge support that we received from both Sony Europe and America. Not only that, our studio owes a big thanks to the PSN community for supporting our titles and helping drive ZEN Pinball to the number one spot. We couldn't have achieved this success without our dedicated fans.
Continue reading Interview: ZEN Studios' Zsolt Kigyossy

Interview: ZEN Studios' Zsolt Kigyossy originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 06 Aug 2009 11:00:00 EST. It may not get the media attention of PSN titles like Flower or the PixelJunk games, but ZEN Pinball is one of the most successful PSN games around. To capitalize on its success, ZEN Studios is planning a number of DLC tables for the game. First up is ZEN Pinball: Street Fighter II, a PS3 interpretation of the Street Fighter II table from Pinball FX on XBLA. "Here at ZEN Studios, we are long time Street Fighter fans and have a great relationship with Capcom, so the idea came naturally," ZEN Studios' managing director Zsolt Kigyossy told us in an exclusive interview.

The price hasn't been revealed yet, but the team is aiming to release the table later this month.
ZEN Pinball: Street Fighter II coming to PSN soon originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 06 Aug 2009 10:20:00 EST. Looks like our glowing preview of ZEN Pinball paid off for Zen Studios. The first (and only) pinball game on the PlayStation Network met an incredible debut, taking the top spot in May. Perhaps the free demo, which showcased the game's solid physics engine and graphics, convinced gamers to go for the full version?

According to GamerBytes, Zen Studios' Pinball FX did "similarly well" on Xbox Live Arcade. That game went on to sell 250,000 units over time -- perhaps ZEN Pinball can meet an equally favorable fate? In addition to ZEN, the rest of the top 5 included many PSN mainstays:
Sadly, we don't have a hands-on for Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection, and that's a real travesty. It was one of the best games released for the Wii last year, and if you're a Wii owner and a fan of pinball (admittedly, that's probably a niche market), then you need to go out and pick it up somewhere. It's a great pinball simulator, features faithful recreations of some of the best pinball tables ever manufactured, and even includes tilt via the Wii Remote.

The Gottlieb Collection, which brings eleven new tables to the Wii, will finally appear in North America this year. This set includes the history for each table, along with a scanned copy of the flyers that manufacturers used to send out to get arcades interested in new machines, a feature lacking in The Williams Collection. They've tossed in two arcade staple bonus games as well, and the only thing missing is a slot for your quarters and the soda-sticky floors. Read on for more info, including a list of the tables in the game.

Gallery: Pinball Hall of Fame: The Gottleib Collection

Continue reading Hands-On: Pinball Hall of Fame: The Gottlieb Collection

Hands-On: Pinball Hall of Fame: The Gottlieb Collection originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Jun 2009 08:00:00 EST. ZEN Pinball will be available on the PlayStation Store on May 14th for $9.99. Our hands-on with the demo revealed a solid foundation for the game, with realistic (if not a bit fast) physics. ZEN Pinball doesn't offer too many frills: don't expect any boss fights, or hedgehog-inspired platforming segments. Instead, you'll get a rather faithful digital recreation of an arcade cabinet, LED display and all.

As expected, ZEN offers online leaderboards, multiple tables and Trophies. However, we're most intrigued by the video chat-enabled online multiplayer mode. You can check it out next week on the US PlayStation Store.
The PlayStation Network features all sorts of innovative genre-defining games -- but where is the traditional pinball game? ZEN Pinball is looking to fill in this suspicious void, and does so with style.

Pinball is a rather straightforward genre to replicate. So long as the ball physics are accurate, pinball fans can generally be satiated -- but what we've played of ZEN Pinball has left us impressed. The core gameplay is exactly what you'd expect from a pinball game: busy tables with a classic emulated LED display on the top left corner. Each table features its own tricks to scoring free balls, multipliers and more. From what we've played of the first playable table, ZEN is attempting to represent the game as realistically as possible -- don't expect a Sonic Spinball-esque adventure here.

The ball feels weighty, and to our surprise, seems incredibly fast. The pinball rolls around with great speed, but for those that find the default difficulty a bit tricky, there are a few options that can be tweaked. Players can adjust the angle of the table, or even slow down the speed of the ball. However, don't expect to unlock Trophies if you decide to turn on any of these modifiers -- you have to play with the default settings in order to earn any achievements.
ZEN Studios plans on rectifying this with a PSN-exclusive game this Spring. ZEN Pinball will offer standard pinball play, with a twist. There will be in-game missions, head-to-head online multiplayer and even worldwide tournaments.

ZEN Pinball will offer four tables -- V12, Tesla, Shaman and El Dorado. Players will be able to play multiplayer not only online, but locally as well. Looks like ZEN is offering all the features a pinball fan could possibly want.
Although once you walk through these hallowed halls of gaming past, it's hard to figure out why a place like this isn't showcased in the middle of Mandalay Bay or in a sparkletronic gaming rotunda inside the Bellagio.

That's because Tim Arnold and the Las Vegas Pinball Collectors Club have made this a non-profit labor of love. They aren't interested in razzle-dazzle showmanship or a high-priced entry fee -- which is why you can enter for free anytime they're open and play one of their 141 pinball machines for a couple of quarters.

Joystiq took some time off during this year's CES to visit to the place, and we only left because they wouldn't let us stay overnight. The sheer amount of pinball games they have on display is staggering, including some extremely rare games like The Pinball Circus and Gottleib's two-player, head-to-head Challenger pinball machine.

Check out the highlights of our visit after the break, and make it a point to stop by the place if you're ever in Sin City. It's the most fun you can have without blowing your entire bankroll.
EX-TERM-IN-ATE! EX-TERM-IN-ATE! Wait, no, those are the other ones. But whatever. The point is: after hearing nothing about Space Invaders Get Even! for months, the game has randomly appeared on the European and Australian Wii Shops. We are unashamedly jigging with joy as we type this. And the extra-terrestial goodness doesn't stop there, for Alien Crush Returns has also joined the line-up. Needless to say, we wholeheartedly welcome our new rulers (of all our spare time).

The other game is Brain Challenge. Sorry, Brain Challenge.
Zen Studios has announced a hyper uppercut to its addictive XBLA release, Pinball FX, with a new table dedicated to Street Fighter. The Super Street Fighter II Turbo table is the pinball game's fourth expansion, and is expected to be available for purchase on November 12. No price for the download has been revealed, though we hope that neither Zen nor Capcom expect us to pay more than the 200 points normally asked for these tables, simply for the prestige that comes from rolling balls across Ryu's face.

Gallery: Pinball FX Street Fighter Theme

XBLA's Pinball FX getting Street Fighter theme originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 06 Nov 2008 16:30:00 EST. I've been a huge fan of Naxat Soft's Alien Crush and other Crush games since they came out. It's no exaggeration to say that the availability of Alien Crush on the Virtual Console factored into my decision to purchase a Wii. When Hudson revealed plans for a 3D WiiWare update of Alien Crush, it definitely captured my attention.

Alien Crush Returns, it turns out, is much more than an update: it is a direct sequel to Alien Crush, and a very different game. While the new version doesn't outshine the original, there's certainly more of it. And it finally brings online leaderboards to the series -- along with direct online competition!
But just because we're insane-o-crazy about this series doesn't mean we're avowed video pinball fanatics. Tycho and Gabe, as well as all those other game companies, must be feeling pretty insecure right now, because they're all going to be upstaged by a humble WiiWare game. Or, at least, that would be the case if this year's Penny Arcade Expo were being attended exclusively by a crowd of weirdos just like us, because Hudson will have Alien Crush Returns and Bomberman Blast on display at their booth. If you thought Hudson was done announcing WiiWare games, you were dead wrong. In fact, Bomberman Blast was just a warmup for the real WiiWare announcement, which we all knew was coming, but we're elated to see: Alien Crush Returns is coming to North America! A few new screens came with the announcement, which you can find in our gallery. Chris Kohler's impressions of today's Japanese release suggest that this news is, in fact, a good thing.

According to the press release, "Alien Crush Returns is the only pinball game for WiiWare that lets gamers compete head to head online." It also happens to be the only pinball game for WiiWare. As with Bomberman Blast (and Star Soldier R), Hudson will host periodic online tournaments, starting with one near the unspecified launch period.
Just one day before the Japanese release of Hudson's Alien Crush Returns, we're treated to new screens of the remake/sequel of the glorious Turbografx-16 pinball game. The one above appears to be one of the new boss levels (briefly seen in the trailer), in which you fire pinballs at a grotesque alien rictus.

Also highlighted: the two-player versus mode -- which is based on score and time, as far as we can tell, and not simultaneous multiplayer, but we doubt it, because that sounds amazingly insane -- interfering with each other's shots, sharing flippers, and generally just having a frustrating old time.

Just knowing that a new Crush pinball game is being released tomorrow somewhere makes the world seem like a happier, warmer place.

PAL regions got the first official release of the amazing pinball game Alien Crush just last year via the Virtual Console. According to the OFLC, the new WiiWare version is Australia-bound as well. Not to be too presumptuous, but this suggests a worldwide release as well. We never doubted that Hudson would make Alien Crush Returns available around the world, but it's nice to have some evidence.

Also rated: Tetris Party and something called Pit Crew Panic, another Hudson Wii game. We have no idea what that is -- some kind of racing-related thing, sure, but ... could it really be a whole game about replacing tires and such?
The WiiWare sequel to Alien Crush is officially the hottest thing ever, even though we're not entirely keen on the new 3D look -- and even though we prefer Devil's Crush to Alien Crush. Among the many reasons it's super hot (reason the first: DUDE ALIEN CRUSH RETURNS) are the new ball upgrades. Reverse Ball allows you to instantly send the ball back the way it was moving. Split Ball enables multiball on the field. Boost Ball boosts the speed of the ball.

Strangely, these new "Action Balls" will be available as DLC. We don't know if they're otherwise unlockable, or if they'll be paid DLC or just time-released. They aren't the only Crush DLC, either -- new stages for the game's Story Mode will be available as downloads.
Actually, you already can if you have Metroid Prime Pinball, but there aren't many other pinball games for use on the DS. Oxygen hopes that the prospect of creating your own tables and sharing them with friends (locally). We think the other selection of features is also interesting (sabotage mode, especially). Call it a retro-speculative.

Whenever possible, I like to freak out on the Internet about how awesome Naxat Soft's Crush series of pinball games is. Alien Crush and Devil's Crush are not only the best pinball games ever made for a not-pinball-machine, they also happen to be the best games on the Virtual Console (I am allowed to have opinions!) When we gave away a bundle of VC games, I made sure that Devil's Crush was part of the bundle.

Jaki Crush is another one of those. It's another Crush game. That's really the only motivation I need to freak out.
Continue reading Virtually Overlooked: Jaki Crush

Virtually Overlooked: Jaki Crush originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 24 Jan 2008 21:00:00 EST. Sure, they may be startlingly generic-looking pinball tables, but our love for the jangliest genre of gaming is such that we're willing to withhold judgment on the quality of the game until we can see, hear, and bump for ourselves.

Although, we admit, it's pretty hard to withhold judgment when we are faced with that Spinning Rotors backglass, with its WordArt logo and guy-jumping-at-bird design. And what's the deal with the title? Is the guy supposed to have rotors, or the bird?

[Via GamesPress]
Dream Pinball with not-so-dreamy art originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Jan 2008 19:00:00 EST. But as soon as someone whispered, "hey, man, pinball," in our little ears, we thought .... well, yeah. We could do that. You could hold the remote and nunchuk just as though you were at a machine, and if there's nothing to kick, well, hire a friend to stand nearby or just move the table over for those moments of frustration.

These shots of Dream Pinball 3D aren't the best looking things we've ever seen, but what we're interested in now is seeing it in motion. The title promises great ball physics, and isn't that what really matters? We've played some pretty shady pinball machines in our day, all boobs and hobbits, and the backdrop only mattered so far as how it affected the game. We'll be keeping an eye on this one, because if done well, it could be worth a play or three.

[Via Press Release]
Dream a little dream of pinball originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Jan 2008 12:45:00 EST. Which we don't. Sorry, fans of those titles.

SouthPeak's Pinball Dreams is the latest attempt to fill the flipper-shaped hole in our hearts. Due to also appear on the Wii and PC, the game sports six tables, plus the option of playing with marble, oak, ivory or gold balls; serious questions, that require serious answers, no doubt.

The single shot we've received so far is ... not bad. Acceptable. We're a little unsure about the choice to squash the action into just one screen, but we'll refrain from judging too much until we see more of the game. This week, the same thing happens, but it's out of left field with Pinball FX, which incidentally was also the top downloaded Arcade title as well, popping into third, behind Gears of War and Rainbow Six Vegas. All of which are followed by Guitar Hero II and the C&C3 demo. Call of Duty 3 moves down to sixth, while GRAW 2 stays put, Crackdown moves up to eighth. 3D Ultra Minigolf Adventures proves it has some staying power by pulling off second to last, with Oblivion rounding off the list at tenth. Really, who doesn't? The good, clean, flip-flappin' fun of pinball can be so exhilarating. But what if the power to create that experience was in the palm of your hand? Wouldn't that make you like a happy-funtime god?

Okay, okay, so we're a little melodramatic. The slow news day bring it out. Here's the deal: Powershot Pinball Constructor is a chance for any pinball lover to realize their most cruel and creative dreams. Players create every aspect of their custom tables and then share them via this series of tubes we call home. And hey, if you're not ready for the ultimate pinball creation challenge, you can just play. No pressure.

Oxygen Games says their Powershot Pinball Constructor is scheduled for this summer, though they're unspecific as to which region. Oxygen Games is based in the U.K., so we assume they mean Europe.
DS pinball with a twist originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 15 Mar 2007 16:20:00 EST. Coca-cola, looking for inspiration for a high-profile ad, apes Grand Theft Auto, a best-selling series that has inspired countless knock-offs and holds incredible relevance in today's pop culture landscape. Pepsi, on the other hand, creates a TV ad based on pinball, a once-popular arcade staple that has declined over the decades to the point where only one company in the world is still making tables. At this rate, we can expect RC Cola to come out with an ad based on bagatelle any day now.
Continue reading Pepsi taps into today's culture with ... pinball?

Pepsi taps into today's culture with ... pinball? originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 04 Mar 2007 17:35:00 EST. The footage presented really conveys an awkward approach to the timeless flipper-flapping past time of gaming. This isn't to say that the awkwardness presented is to be taken negatively, however, as we're very excited to give the final product a go after seeing this footage. Beyond the video, Nintendo Gal's kindness even extends to offering up a plethora of screenshots as well.

[Via Nintendo Gal]
Flipper Critters video provides pinball fix originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 Jun 2006 13:00:00 EST.
