Instead, it's an "extra awesome PvZ experience fans can enjoy on Facebook," the developer <a href="https://twitter.com/PlantsvsZombies/status/316589204639477760">tweeted</a>.<br /><br />The <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pvzadventures">Facebook page</a> for the unreleased game says <em>Adventures</em> includes "endless waves of new characters, strategies, territories, and community challenges." Interested parties will have the chance to find out exactly how Plants vs. Zombies has been adapted for the Facebook ecosystem soon: "liking" the page offers a chance to get in on a beta.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/26/plants-vs-zombies-adventures-sprouting-on-facebook/">'Plants vs. Zombies Adventures' sprouting on Facebook</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 26 Mar 2013 13:20:00 EST. The free download will be available on the eShop next week, which lets you sample all available tables in <em>Zen Pinball 2</em>'s vault for a limited amount of time before purchase is necessary.<br /><br />Tables are purchased piecemeal through the in-game store, tables including the stock game tables and DLC such as the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/marvel-pinball"><em>Marvel Pinball</em></a> series and the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/31/zen-studios-plants-vs-zombies-pinball-table-lets-in-sunshine-n/"><em>Plants vs. Zombies</em> tie-in</a>. The freshly minted <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/05/zen-studios-launching-star-wars-pinball-this-month/"><em>Star Wars</em> tables</a> have not been announced for Nintendo platforms, so naturally there's no mention of them in the announcement.<br /><br />Finally, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention that purchases on other platforms won't transfer over to the Wii U. Zen Studios <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/09/zen-pinball-2-flies-out-of-the-chute-on-ps3-and-ps-vita-this-spr/">offered cross-play</a> on PS Vita and PS3, but since the 3DS and Wii U use different stores, transferring already established content from the handheld to the Wii U is impossible.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/15/zen-pinball-2-flies-down-the-wii-u-chute-march-21/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Zen Pinball 2 flies down the Wii U chute March 21</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/15/zen-pinball-2-flies-down-the-wii-u-chute-march-21/">Zen Pinball 2 flies down the Wii U chute March 21</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Mar 2013 15:00:00 EST. Zombies Adventures." Domain squatters lost out on registering <a href="http://whois.domaintools.com/plantsvszombiesadventures.com">PlantsVsZombiesAdventures.com</a>, <a href="http://whois.domaintools.com/plantsvszombiesadventure.com">PlantsVsZombiesAdventure.com</a> and <a href="http://whois.domaintools.com/pvzadventures.com">pvZadVentures.com</a> before EA got to it, as each URL was registered on March 6.<br /><br />As usual, domain names mean nothing without an actual game announcement to accompany them. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/plants-vs-zombies-2"><em>Plants Vs. Zombies 2</em></a> was announced back in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/20/plants-vs-zombies-2-announced/">August 2012</a>, with a late Spring 2013 release window. Whether the "2" is replaced with "Adventures" in the game's title remains to be seen.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/10/ea-registers-plants-vs-zombies-adventures-domains/">EA registers 'Plants Vs Zombies Adventures' domains</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 10 Mar 2013 16:30:00 EST. The usual asking price for Popcap's tower defense darling is $10.49 - PS Plus members will find the free game available in their Instant Game Collection when PSN updates tomorrow.<br /><br />In addition to the free game, the PlayStation Blog has given us a look at some of the discounts on offer in this week's update. Quirky rhythm game <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/21/retro-grade-review/"><em>Retro/Grade</em></a> from 24 Caret Games will be on sale for a mere $2.44 this week, plus the winners of the <a href="http://want-on-sale-in-the-psn-gamers-choice-awards/">PSN Gamers' Choice Awards contest</a> have been determined - a promotion that asked gamers to vote on which games they'd like to see discounted. Highlights include reduced prices on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/playstation-all-stars-battle-royale"><em>PS All-Stars: Battle Royale</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/sound-shapes"><em>Sound Shapes</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/escape-plan"><em>Escape Plan</em></a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/25/free-plants-vs-zombies-vita-on-ps-plus-this-week-psn-gamers-ch/">Free Plants vs. Zombies Vita on PS Plus this week, PSN Gamers Choice winners</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 25 Feb 2013 16:30:00 EST. On either <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/plants-vs.-zombies/id350642635?mt=8">the iPhone</a> or in <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/plants-vs.-zombies-hd/id363282253?mt=8">HD on the iPad</a>, you can grab the full-featured app for free through the rest of this week.<br /><br />Statistically, given how many copies of the game have sold already, you probably already own it on at least one of your gaming devices, but just in case that list doesn't include iOS just yet, <em>there you go</em>. And now that <em>PvZ</em> has finally and truly achieved total platform domination, PopCap can start it on the sequel; It's due out <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/20/plants-vs-zombies-2-announced/">sometime this spring</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/21/plants-vs-zombies-goes-free-on-ios-this-week/">Plants vs. Zombies goes free on iOS this week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 Feb 2013 23:59:00 EST. All downloadable PC games are 50 percent off though the developer's <a href="http://www.popcap.com/all-games/pc-games">store</a>, including <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/plants-vs-zombies"><em>Plants vs. Zombies</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/peggle"><em>Peggle</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bejeweled-3"><em>Bejeweled 3</em></a>.<br /><br />The sale could certainly fund PopCap's "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/09/popcap-seeks-dev-with-frostbite-2-experience-for-a-aaa-game/">AAA console title</a>" ambitions, but the savings are passed on to you, the player. What better way to celebrate that than giving kids copies of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/plants-vs-zombies"><em>Plants vs. Zombie</em>s</a> instead of candy on Halloween? That's exactly what the American Dental Association is doing with the "Stop Zombie Mouth" campaign. PopCap is giving away a ton of PC and Mac copies of the tooth-friendly game for adults to give this Halloween, all in the name of fun, zombies, and promoting oral health awareness. (Just don't eat any candy while you're clicking away.)<br /><br />Parents can pick up free coupons redeemable for a PC or Mac copy by visiting the Stop Zombie Mouth <a href="http://www.stopzombiemouth.com/">website</a>, or by visiting their local participating ADA dentist. The free update for the iPhone and iPad version of the game includes five new levels, the "Last Stand Endless Mode" and three new achievements.<br /><br />Actually, it turns out the five new levels are inside the Last Stand Endless Mode. The new variant gives a limited amount of sun in a twist on the classic Endless Mode. The game is expected to see the sun in the "first half of 2013," with a narrower window of "late spring" also mentioned.<br /><br />As one would expect from a sequel, it will include new "features, settings, and situations," but there are no specific details at this time.<br /><br />PopCap has been in heavy promotion of its PvZ franchise lately, with the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/26/plants-vs-zombies-spawns-talking-zombatar-app/">Talking Zombatar</a> expected later this year. Hitting the cross-promotion button, Zen Studios is expected to reveal a pinball table this weekend <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/08/zen-pinball-2-on-ps3-vita-popcap-table-this-september/">featuring a PopCap franchise</a>. The iPad version sees the bulk of the updates, adding several new game modes, mini-games, achievements and leaderboards. Specifically, it adds the Zen Garden, Vasebreaker Endless and I, Zombie modes, along with the Slot Machine mini-game. An optional mini-game pack including Zombiquarium, Portal Combat and Beghouled Twist can also be unlocked with in-game currency (earned either through gameplay or, you guessed it, in-app purchase).<br /><br />The iPhone and iPod Touch version, meanwhile, receives only the Vasebreaker mode, additional achievements and leaderboards. The update is available now. Whether or not you have any free time available, well, that's something else entirely.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/19/plants-vs-zombies-ios-receives-hefty-update/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Plants vs. Zombies iOS receives hefty update</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/19/plants-vs-zombies-ios-receives-hefty-update/">Plants vs. Zombies iOS receives hefty update</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Apr 2012 14:00:00 EST. Last week's "early" launch saw the additions of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/escape-plan">Escape Plan</a>, Hustle Kings</em>, and <em>Super Stardust Delta</em> -- that last one being the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/13/super-stardust-delta-is-the-free-3g-vita-game/">free 3G game</a>. This week we see the addition of <em>Touch My Katamari,</em> perennial favorite <em>Plants vs. Zombies</em> and several augmented reality. Of course, for further pertinent PS Vita information, head on over to our Joystiq <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/13/joystiqs-playstation-vita-launch-guide/">Vita launch guide</a>.<br /><br />PSN Plus subscribers can pick up six classic Sega titles for free this week, which includes the first two <em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em> titles, <em>Golden Axe </em>(call dibs on dwarf!) and <em>Altered Beast.</em> Also, don't forget to check out the demos for <em>SSX</em> and <em>Shank 2</em>. Different menus? Nope, same options as always, same touchscreen choices as iOS. Wall-nuts and peashooters? Still there. Zombie handwriting and spelling? Still really, really poor.<br />

<br />
Crazy Dave, whom you might remember as <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/plants-vs-zombies"><em>Plants vs. Zombies</em></a>' power-up purveyor, can't speak English. But that hasn't stopped him from <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&amp;v=L_UTh4qNjjo">producing a rap song</a>, apparently, which <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/ie/album/plants-vs.-zombies-wabby-wabbo/id483153999">PopCap is now selling for 99 cents on iTunes</a> in order to raise some money for charity this holiday season. The single, which features "Cray-Z" murmuring over a bombastic beat, has already picked up over 600,000 views on YouTube, and PopCap says all profits on the song's sale are going to <a href="http://www.concernworldwide.org/">Concern Worldwide</a>.<br />
<br />
What's Concern do with its nonprofit funds? It helps grow plants, of course. How else are we going to take on the coming zombie bobsled threat?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/20/crazy-daves-wabby-wabbo-being-sold-on-itunes-for-charity/">Crazy Dave's Wabby Wabbo being sold on iTunes for charity</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 Dec 2011 08:30:00 EST. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/plants-vs-zombies">Plants vs. Zombies</a></em> for iPhone has received an update for the holidays, featuring festive cheer, minor user improvements and the "I, Zombie" mode. The new mode allows you to take on the role of the invading zombies -- a feature previously implemented in the PC, Mac, XBLA and DS versions of the game.<br />
<br />
The update also includes GameCenter leaderboard support for the first time, and adds four new achievements and "Bronze, Silver and Gold Mystery Sprouts." Now, go and clear the zombies so Santa can have a clear LZ!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/15/plants-vs-zombies-iphone-receives-holiday-update-i-zombie-m/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Plants vs. Zombies iPhone receives holiday update, 'I, Zombie' mode</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/15/plants-vs-zombies-iphone-receives-holiday-update-i-zombie-m/">Plants vs. Zombies iPhone receives holiday update, 'I, Zombie' mode</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 Dec 2011 10:30:00 EST. Aussie indie pop group Hey Geronimo were interested in promoting their latest single, "Why Don't We Do Something?," so they made this terrifying montage of iOS games acted out in real life, you see. We're not exactly sure how this happened, but we can't say we're sorry it did.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/02/ios-games-get-so-so-real-in-this-bizarre-music-video/">iOS games get so, so real in this bizarre music video</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 02 Dec 2011 23:30:00 EST. If you need to take a breather from the exhausting business of arboreal zombie warfare, you'll be able to participate in <a href="http://www.pcworld.com/article/239711/plants_vs_zombies_for_iphone_gets_major_update.html">nine new mini-games</a> on the iPhone version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/plants-vs-zombies"><em>Plants vs. Zombies</em></a> today. An update for the title just launched, which adds three packs of three diversions to Crazy Dave's store, such as ZomBotany 2, Invisi-Ghoul and Beghouled Twist. Really, the puns are worth the price of admission.<br />
<br />
Each pack can be bought with in-game coins, or if you prefer, with $0.99 of your real-world cash. We'd suggest spending the former, because the latter can be spent on other real-world goods and services. Like, you could play the mini games, and also eat the three Twix bars you just bought. Or, wait -- six Twix bars! <em>Because there's two of them</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/09/plants-vs-zombies-iphone-update-adds-nine-new-mini-games/">Plants vs Zombies iPhone update adds nine new mini-games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 09 Sep 2011 23:03:00 EST. If the posts seem disconnected, rushed or crappier in general today, don't blame us -- it's all because of the <em>STD</em>. Matt Ackerman and Jon Sandness' flash game, <a href="http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/576557"><em>Symphonic Tower Defense</em></a> (What did you think we were talking about?) is so wonderfully addictive we can't stop putting our fermatas in formation today.<br />
<br />
<em>Symphonic Tower Defense</em> is the number one game on Newgrounds right now, and even though we already told you <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/12/wrup-the-hand-of-zumba-points-the-way-to-gamescom/">what we'd be playing this weekend</a>, <em>we lied</em>. Thanks to Ackerman and His Sandliness, we'll be playing a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dance-dance-revolution/"><em>DDR</em></a>-<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/plants-vs-zombies"><em>Plants vs. Zombies</em></a>-inspired flash game instead of writing your articles. Deal with it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/13/sorry-did-you-want-game-news-were-too-busy-playing-symphonic/">Sorry, did you want game news? <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/popcap">PopCap</a> and Sony Ericsson today <a href="http://popcap.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=43&amp;item=211">announced</a> an agreement that will finally bring the casual developer's titles to Android devices in Europe. The agreement will bring them to exactly two of Sony's platforms, the Xperia Mini and the Xperia Mini Pro, as they roll out this summer. Three of PopCap's titles will be pre-loaded onto the devices, specifically the full version of <em>Chuzzle</em> and trial versions of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/plants-vs-zombies"><em>Plants vs. Zombies</em></a> and <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/peggle"><em>Peggle</em></a>.<br />
<br />
In the press release detailing the agreement, PopCap's Giordano Bruno Contestabile stated, "We are delighted to partner with Sony Ericsson to fulfill our promise to Android users and bring PopCap's hit mobile games to an ever-widening base of smartphone users." Presumably, PopCap's titles will spread to more than <em>two</em> of Sony's phones in the future.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/20/popcap-games-to-be-bundled-with-sony-ericsson-phones-in-europe/">PopCap games to be bundled with Sony Ericsson phones in Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Jul 2011 16:00:00 EST. Rumors first began circulating nearly three weeks ago when <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/22/report-popcap-being-acquired-for-over-1-billion/">TechCrunch reported</a> that casual gaming pusher PopCap was going to be acquired for over $1 billion dollars. Now, Electronic Arts has announced its intention to purchase the Seattle-based developer for $750 million, including $100 million in stock. The acquisition is expected to close in August of this year, pending the usual regulatory approvals.<br />
<br />
"EA and PopCap are a compelling combination," boasted CEO John Riccitiello, clearly envisioning a newly expanded EA digital empire. "PopCap's great studio talent and powerful IP add to EA's momentum and accelerate our drive towards a $1 billion digital business."<br />
<br />
"We picked EA because they have recast their culture around making great digital games," said David Roberts, CEO of PopCap. "By working with EA, we'll scale our games and services to deliver more social, mobile, casual fun to an even bigger, global audience." In case it's not obvious, we'll spell it out for you: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/origin">O-R-I-G-I-N</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/12/ea-to-acquire-popcap-games-for-750-million/">EA to acquire PopCap Games for $750 million</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 Jul 2011 16:17:00 EST. PopCap's<em> Plants vs. Zombies</em> continues to spread its roots throughout the games industry (or, from the other perspective, it continues its slow, mindless march across the industry). Today, PopCap's outrageously popular casual strategy game has launched on the Windows Phone 7 platform for $4.99/&euro;4.99. It's part of Microsoft's "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/24/windows-phone-7-getting-six-weeks-of-must-have-games-including/">Must Have Games</a>" promotion, preceded by <em>Sonic 4</em> and followed next week by <em>Angry Birds</em>.<br />
<br />
The WinPhone version includes Xbox Live integration, including leaderboards and achievements. It also includes the first mobile versions of the "<a href="http://plantsvszombies.wikia.com/wiki/Vasebreaker">Vasebreaker</a>" and "<a href="http://plantsvszombies.wikia.com/wiki/I,_Zombie">I, Zombie</a>" puzzle modes.<br />

TechCrunch reports, by way of "multiple sources," that casual gaming powerhouse PopCap - the group behind Plants vs. Zombies, Peggle, and every other game your mom loves and you won't admit to loving - is in the process of being acquired.<br />
<br />
... for over $1 billion.<br />
<br />
While you consider all the wrong decisions you've made with your life, we'll finish writing this post so we can join you. The buyer remains unknown and, while growth-happy dev Zynga seems like an obvious pick, TC is hearing that PopCap's asking price (over $1 billion, remember?) was too rich for its blood.<br />
<br />
TC speculates that either EA, Japanese mobile group DeNA, or Chinese outfit Tencent might be behind the purchase. You may recognize DeNA following <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/12/dena-acquiring-ngmoco-for-400-million/">its acquisition of ngmoco last year</a>, and Tencent following its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/09/riot-games-confirms-tencent-majority-buyout/">majority buyout of free-to-play hit League of Legends</a>. We've asked PopCap for comment which, if the report is true, we expect right after the PopCap team finishes screaming about how rich they are.<br />
<br />
[<strong>Update 6:09pm ET -</strong> As is to be expected, PopCap issued us the following comment: "Per company policy, we do not comment on rumors and speculation of this nature." <strong>6:45pm ET</strong> - PopCap's soon-to-be "Customer Engagement Lead" Jennifer Kye <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/jinkwell/status/83663523426738176">took to Twitter to say</a>, "Not true. Rumor debunked." She <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/jinkwell/status/83665455738404864">later clarified</a> that she would be "working there next week" and that her soon-to-be "boss confirmed it" for her. We've again reached out to PopCap for another statement. <strong>7:02pm ET</strong> - And PopCap got back to us again - they're really good about that - with the same no comment: "we do not comment on rumors and speculation of this nature."]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/22/report-popcap-being-acquired-for-over-1-billion/">Report: PopCap being acquired for over $1 billion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Jun 2011 17:50:00 EST. Time is already passing, and you're not downloading <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/plants-vs-zombies"><em>Plants vs. Zombies</em></a> on your Android device -- for zero dollars! Frankly, that seems <em>really</em> silly to us. Sure, Popcap already released the game on just about every other piece of electronics you own, but that doesn't make it any less wonderful and addicting. Did we mention it's free? Maybe we should point that out again, 'cause it's <a href="http://www.amazon.com/mobile-apps/b/ref=sa_menu_adr_app4?ie=UTF8&amp;node=2350149011"><em>totally free</em></a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/31/psa-plants-vs-zombies-free-on-android-today/">PSA: Plants vs. Zombies free on Android today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 31 May 2011 17:30:00 EST. PopCaps's <em>Chuzzle</em> and <em>Plants vs. Zombies</em> will launch for Android devices exclusively through Amazon's Appstore for Android. Amazon will have a two-week exclusive on both titles for the "U.S. market."<br />
<br />
<em>Chuzzle</em> will be available tomorrow, May 17, through May 30 and <em>Plants vs. Zombies</em> will shamble in "during a second exclusive offer later this month." Both games will be free on the first day of availability and $2.99 after.<br />
<br />
PopCap's <a href="http://popcap.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=43&amp;item=190">announcement</a> is missing a lot of details about the timetable for the exclusives. We're currently following up and asking if a similar approach is planned for the company's future Android titles.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/16/popcap-signs-amazon-android-appstore-deal-chuzzle-pvz-availabl/">PopCap signs Amazon Android Appstore deal; Chuzzle, PvZ available this month</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 May 2011 12:30:00 EST. Though they may not know it yet, folks who've yet to get down with PopCap's horticultural undead defense sim are having a great day. It's never been cheaper to pick up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/plants-vs-zombies"><em>Plants vs. Zombies</em></a> -- until Thursday at 1PM ET, the game's marked down to $3.40 on <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/news/5405/">Steam</a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/04/plants-vs-zombies-down-to-3-40-on-steam-until-thursday-afternoo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Plants vs Zombies down to $3.40 on Steam until Thursday afternoon</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/04/plants-vs-zombies-down-to-3-40-on-steam-until-thursday-afternoo/">Plants vs Zombies down to $3.40 on Steam until Thursday afternoon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 04 May 2011 02:00:00 EST. The Xbox Live Deal of the Week is going for a spring theme this week, offering discounts on several vernal games and items. Of particular note are <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/peggle"><em>Peggle</em></a> and <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/ilomilo"><em>Ilomilo</em></a>, both of which can be had for just 400 points each ($5), and you can throw in <em>Peggle Nights</em> for another 200 ($2.50).<br />
<br />
You'll also find it cheaper to deal with the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqpMFsnN7hM">zombies on your lawn</a>, as <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/plants-vs-zombies"><em>Plants vs. Zombies</em></a> has been knocked down to 800 points ($10). If none of that is appealing, you could always snag an Avatar monkey prop for 120 points ($1.50), because nothing says "spring" like monkeys.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/19/xbl-deal-of-the-week-is-having-a-spring-fling/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>XBL Deal of the Week is having a Spring Fling</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/19/xbl-deal-of-the-week-is-having-a-spring-fling/">XBL Deal of the Week is having a Spring Fling</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 19 Apr 2011 12:00:00 EST. You know, we didn't even realize <em>Bejeweled</em> games had music. Every time we play one of those joints it's when we're <em>supposed</em> to be doing something else -- so it's always muted, if not half-tucked under our desk on an iPhone, all cocked sideways.<br />
<br />
Listening to the remastered <em>Bejeweled 2</em> and <em>3</em> soundtracks, now available to stream (or purchase) from <a href="http://skaven252.bandcamp.com/">the composers' page</a> on online music store Bandcamp, it's clear that we've been missing out. These lively electronic ditties have a lot of spirit -- so why waste them on gem-matching? This could be the mix that finally transforms your mundane ride to work into a "journey," or your half-assed workout into a "quest."<br />
<br />
Bonus: The <em>Plants vs. Zombies</em> soundtrack is also available on <a href="http://laurashigihara.bandcamp.com/album/plants-vs-zombies-soundtrack">Bandcamp</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/07/hear-the-remastered-bejeweled-soundtracks-for-the-first-time/">Hear the remastered Bejeweled soundtracks for the first time</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 03:00:00 EST. PopCap will discount all of its iPhone and iPad games this weekend, beginning at 12:01AM PT tonight, donating all revenues from the 48-hour sale to the Red Cross in support of earthquake relief efforts in Japan. The company's iPhone games will be reduced to $1 each, while its two iPad apps, notably <em>Plants vs. Zombies HD,</em> will be offered for $2 apiece.<br />
<br />
"We recently opened an office in Tokyo, and while our Japan-based employees are safe and uninjured, we understand countless others in Japan need food, shelter, and medical attention," said PopCap's Ellen Marett in an announcement for the donation drive. "Given that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/plants-vs-zombies"><em>Plants vs. Zombies</em></a> reached #1 on the iPhone and iPad sales charts in Japan, it seemed like the most appropriate game to feature in this fundraising campaign."<br />
<br />
A complete listing of PopCap's iOS titles can be accessed via this <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/popcap-games-inc/id284832145">App Store link</a>.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update [3/22/11]:</strong> PopCap reports that the fundraiser sale raised more than $200,000, "which is being passed along to the International Red Cross for use in their ongoing efforts to provide food, shelter, medicine and other essentials to those suffering from the devastation in Japan."<br />

We'll issue the standard "PopCap Warning" here: One of the developer's <em>severely</em> addictive casual games is spreading to a new platform today, raising the threat level to your productivity to red. If you have your DSi nearby and have a bunch to do, be warned that<em> Plants vs. Zombies</em> is now available on DSiWare.<br />
<br />
On WiiWare today, Studio Walljump releases <em>Liight</em>, the puzzler it first announced in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/05/unfortunately-named-new-wiiware-puzzler-announced/">2008</a>. In <em>Liight,</em> you position colored lights and manipulate shadows to ensure that the correct color of light is shining on multiple targets. The PlayStation Store had some noteworthy releases in February: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/explodemon"><em>Explodemon</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/stacking"><em>Stacking</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bionic-commando-rearmed-2"><em>Bionic Commando Rearmed 2</em></a>. But none of these new releases managed to chart in PSN's monthly sales numbers. Instead, you'll see some familiar names on the top 5 list, including <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/angry-birds"><em>Angry Birds</em></a>, which continues its second month of bestselling sales.<br />

In addition to <em>Angry Birds</em>, the appearance of a PopCap game, a <em>Tetris</em> game, and a <em>Pac-Man</em> game tell us that casual games are key to making your way to the top of the PlayStation Network.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/08/angry-birds-continues-psn-domination-in-february/">Angry Birds continues PSN domination in February</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Mar 2011 09:59:00 EST. We're just gonna level with you, folks -- <em>we're scared</em>. Frankly, reading this weekend's <a href="http://www.cnbc.com/id/41935586">CNBC report</a> that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/plants-vs-zombies"><em>Plants vs. Zombies</em></a> developer PopCap Games is considering an <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPO">IPO</a> worries us greatly. In so many words, it means that the quirky indie studio could go from private to public, meaning that the company could go from being beholden to itself to being beholden to investors. It also means that PopCap could expand far more rapidly -- and that <em>you</em> could own a piece of the action.<br />
<br />
As it stands, the studio pulled in over $100 million last year in revenues and, according to CNBC, is the third largest Facebook developer -- handily besting Disney's user numbers with just two games of its own (versus Disney's 37!). PopCap doesn't deny the possibility of the IPO -- it evenregistered with the US Securities and Exchange Commission -- with company prez David Roberts saying, "I do think we'll be ready internally. Whether the market is ready remains to be seen. It has got to be right for us."<br />
<br />
Amazingly, CNBC also asked Roberts if he would comment on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/21/trademark-popcap-going-off-the-rails-on-a-yetitrain/">long ago trademarked</a> "Yetitrain" name. He didn't. That name, however, is still <em>amazing</em>. Unfortunately, we may not be hearing anything about it anytime soon. Roberts stated, "Don't hold your breath" when asked about the possibilty of a new franchise being announced this year.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/07/popcap-considering-ipo-not-likely-revealing-any-new-ip-in-2011/">PopCap considering IPO, not likely revealing any new IP in 2011</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 07 Mar 2011 11:38:00 EST. <font color="gray"><em>During another long night of shakes and sweats, suffering from what was surely some PopCap Games withdrawal, we pondered the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/whats-in-a-name">origin story</a> of the electronic pharmaceutical giant's name. We spoke with PopCap Co-Founder and </em></font><font color="gray"><em>Chief Creative Officer Jason Kapalka for the answer</em></font><font color="gray"><em>:</em></font><br />
<br />
"First thing is that [PopCap Games] wasn't our name originally. The original name was 'Sexy Action Cool,'" Kapalka told us. "Back at university in Edmonton, there was an inside joke because some people had a basement suite with this big movie poster of Antonio Banderas in <em>Desperado</em>. It had this movie quote at the top that said: Sexy. Action. Cool."<br />
<br />
"It became an inside joke on how nobody could imagine using Sexy Action Cool in a real sentence. We'd walk around saying, 'You see that movie?' 'Yeah, it was sexy, action, cool.' Or 'That couch? That couch is really sexy, action, cool.'"<br />
<br />
The company founders snagged <a href="http://sexyactioncool.com/">the related URL</a> (which now directs to PopCap proper) and continued to not think much of the name, at first. As the site grew, however, it became clear that "Sexy Action Cool" was an awkward destination for mass-market family games.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/28/whats-in-a-name-popcap-games/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>What's in a Name: PopCap Games</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/28/whats-in-a-name-popcap-games/">What's in a Name: PopCap Games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 28 Feb 2011 20:00:00 EST. <a href="http://lbp.me/v/x252cr"><em>Plants vs. Zombots</em></a> might be the most faithful recreation of a game we've see in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/littlebigplanet-2"><em>LittleBigPlanet 2</em></a> so far. Microsoft is treating its phone platform like a console, planning a release "event" for its Xbox Live games on Windows Phone 7. This spring, Microsoft's mobile platform will get six weeks of "Must Have Games," including <em>Plants vs. Zombies</em>, <em>Hydro Thunder</em>, <em>Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1</em>, <em>Doodle Jump</em> and more. The <a href="http://majornelson.com/archive/2011/02/24/gears-of-war-3-beta-update-and-much-more-just-announced-long.aspx">press release</a> reiterates that the games, like all Xbox Live games on the platform, include Achievements and leaderboards.<br />
<br />
The platform will also be the exclusive home to <em>Fable Coin Golf</em>. Available in March, <em>Coin Golf</em> will let you transfer gold earned in the game to either the PC or console versions of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/fable-iii"><em>Fable 3</em></a>. Connecting the console and mobile game will also unlock "three exclusive weapons that can be used in the Traitor's Keep game add-on."<br />
<br />
The announcement coincides with the expansion of the Windows Phone platform to another carrier in the US. Sprint's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/24/htc-arrive-is-sprints-first-windows-phone-7-device-launches-ma/">HTC Arrive</a> is the first WP7 device for the carrier, and will be available in March.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> <a href="http://www.winrumors.com/angry-birds-for-windows-phone-7-due-on-april-6/">WinRumors</a> indicates that <em>Angry Birds</em> will be among the WP7 releases during the "Must Have Games" promotion.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/24/windows-phone-7-getting-six-weeks-of-must-have-games-including/">Windows Phone 7 getting six weeks of 'Must Have Games' this Spring, Fable Coin Golf in March</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 24 Feb 2011 15:45:00 EST. The seventh annual International Mobile Gaming Awards ceremony has concluded at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, and two US-developed titles came away with special honors. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/infinity-blade">Infinity Blade</a></em> from Epic Games garnered an award for Excellence in Design (we'd have also given it Supreme Overall Awesomeness) while PopCap's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/plants-vs-zombies">Plants vs. Zombies</a></em> was picked as Best Casual Game.<br />
<br />
European winners included <em><a href="http://www.mobigame.net/">Perfect Cell</a></em> by France's Mobigame (People's Choice Award); FDG's <em><a href="http://www.fdg-entertainment.com/en/iPad-Games/Beyond-Ynth-HD.html">Beyond Ynth</a></em> (Excellence in Gameplay, Grand Prix Award) and <a href="http://www.fishlabs.net/en/games/snowboard-hero/"><em>Snowboard</em> <em>Hero</em></a> by Fishlabs (Excellence in Gameplay, Operators' Choice) from Germany; the UK-made <em><a href="http://www.papasangre.com/">Papa Sangre</a></em> by Somethin' Else (Most innovative Game); and <em><a href="http://invaders.soulbit7.com/">AR invaders</a></em> by Israel-based dev Soulbit (Best Real World Game).<br />
<br />
Mobile games will get their next chance to shine at GDC 2011, during both the <a href="http://igf.com/2011juries.html">IGF Awards</a> and <a href="http://www.gamechoiceawards.com/">Game Developers Choice Awards</a> on March 2.<br type="_moz" /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/18/infinity-blade-plants-vs-zombies-among-international-mobile-ga/">Infinity Blade, Plants vs. Zombies among International Mobile Gaming Awards winners</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 Feb 2011 23:30:00 EST. Our friends overseas -- who live in the United States of Kingdoms, which we're fairly certain is what the UK is short for -- are about to have their free time sucked into oblivion. Publisher Mastertronic has announced plans to bring PopCap's most devilishly addictive titles to UK retailers on various platforms, starting with the February 18 release of <em>PopCap Hits</em> for Xbox 360; a tidy bundle which includes <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bejeweled-2">Bejeweled 2</a></em>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/peggle">Peggle</a></em>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/feeding-frenzy">Feeding Frenzy</a> </em>and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/astropop">AstroPop</a></em>.<br />
<br />
Shortly thereafter, the publisher will port <em>Plants vs. Zombies</em> to the DS, and will release a second collection of <em>PopCap Hits</em> for 360, including <em>Plants vs. Zombies</em>, <em>Zuma</em>, <em>Feeding Frenzy 2</em> and <em>Heavy Weapon</em>. Mediatronic also plans on releasing retail versions of a few of the casual developer's titles on PC later this year. Basically, we hope that the UK doesn't have any big projects coming up that will require its citizens to be as productive as humanly possible, because, <em>hoo boy</em>, that's a whole lot of PopCap.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/30/mastertronic-bringing-popcap-games-to-uk-retail-on-ds-pc-and-36/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mastertronic bringing PopCap games to UK retail on DS, PC and 360</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/30/mastertronic-bringing-popcap-games-to-uk-retail-on-ds-pc-and-36/">Mastertronic bringing PopCap games to UK retail on DS, PC and 360</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 30 Jan 2011 11:45:00 EST. Like the sunrise, the expansion of a PopCap game to another platform is inevitable. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/plants-vs-zombies"><em>Plants vs. Zombies</em></a> will be available on the PlayStation Network in February thanks to the company's continuing collaboration with Sony Online Entertainment. Like SOE's previous efforts, this appears to be a direct port of the original game.<br />
<br />
If you're looking for something more "exclusive," SOE has announced an extensive suite of original PSN games as well:
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-IQKPzWVcQ"><em>Acceleration of Suguri X Edition</em></a> from Rockin' Android is an anime robot beat 'em up.</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/slam-bolt-scrappers"><em>Slam Bolt Scrappers</em></a> from Fire Hose Games has you constructing buildings, and brawling bosses to protect them.</li>
    <li><em>Akimi Village</em> from NinjaBee has you gathering resources to construct a village.</li>
    <li><a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/10/06/sideway-coming-exclusively-to-ps3-in-2011-first-concept-art/"><em>Sideway</em></a> from Playbrains and Fuel Industries is an adventure set in the "gritty art culture" of NYC.</li>
    <li><em>Rochard</em> from Recoil Games is a side-scrolling puzzler set in space.</li>
</ul>
<em>Slam Bolt Scrappers</em> is <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/01/28/slam-bolt-scrappers-bursts-onto-psn-in-march-with-innovative-beverage-mode/">arriving</a> this March, while <em>Sideway</em> is cleared with a vague "Spring" release window. Unfortunately, not much else has been released about the other titles, but expect more in the future.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/28/plants-vs-zombies-ps3-release-date/">Plants vs. Zombies vs. PS3 this Feb., SOE announces upcoming PSN library</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 28 Jan 2011 14:40:00 EST.
