	<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/06/platinums-kamiya-hoping-to-announce-his-own-game-in-2012-fumit/"><img alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/04/bayonetta_tokyo_2_530x298.jpg" style="width: 530px; height: 298px; " /></a></div>
Since <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bayonetta"><em>Bayonetta</em></a>'s late 2009/early 2010 debut, director Hideki Kamiya has gone relatively quiet. And while he remains that way for now, it seems we may see some movement from him this year, as he told <a href="http://www.4gamer.net/games/000/G000000/20111221108/">4Gamer</a> in its big "looking back on 2011" Japanese developer feature (via <a href="http://andriasang.com/comzk3/4gamer_megafeature/">Andriasang</a>) that he "would like to announce a new game and make a comeback on the game scene and be known as more than just some guy who posts on Twitter," as his hope for 2012. Bizarrely, he didn't name a single favorite game from the last year, choosing instead to say "nothing in particular" struck his fancy, while Nintendo's eShop "3D Classics" were his favorite entertainment content last year.<br />
<br />
The feature also features a cadre of Square Enix devs, who hilariously all named <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/skyrim"><em>Skryim</em></a> their favorite game of the year (with the exception of a single producer), while the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/13/sony-confirms-uedas-departure-the-last-guardian-to-be-complete/">no longer Sony-affiliated</a> <em>Last Guardian</em> creative lead Fumito Ueda put <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/portal-2"><em>Portal 2</em></a> at the top of his list. He was also quick to point out that "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-last-guardian"><em>The Last Guardian</em></a> is in development, with the staff hoping to meet expectations even though with each game they taste the difficulties of creation." Okay then!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/catherine"><em>Catherine</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dark-souls"><em>Dark Souls</em></a> also got nods from a variety of devs, as did <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/super-mario-3d-land"><em>Super Mario 3D Land</em></a>. And hey, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/joystiq-best-of-2011">you know where we stand</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/06/platinums-kamiya-hoping-to-announce-his-own-game-in-2012-fumit/">Platinum's Kamiya hoping to announce his own game in 2012, Fumito Ueda loves Portal 2, and more</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 06 Jan 2012 11:45:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/30/xbox-live-subscription-prices-to-rise-60-for-1-year-beginning/">bump in cost</a> for a Gold membership on Xbox Live is just the tip of the iceberg, according to game industry seer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/michael-pachter">Michael Pachter</a>. Predicting a $100 plan as the next evolutionary step in subscription options soon to be available to Xbox Live consumers, he told <a href="http://www.industrygamers.com/news/xbox-live-likely-to-see-100-platinum-service-next-says-pachter/">IndustryGamers</a> reports that while the initial extra $10 "translates to around $100 to 150 million per year in additional revenue for Microsoft," the company will "reinvest at least this much in developing other new applications, and will roll out a premium service with $100 to 200 million worth of enhancements. If they can get 2 million users to switch from the $60 plan to the $100 plan, they'll make an extra $80 million a year, and can keep investing to try to grow that business."<br />
<br />
It makes sense: Xbox Live is easily one of the biggest draws of the console and consumers have already shown they're willing to pay a premium for it. But even if Microsoft were to offer a "Platinum" service, what could justify what is comparably such a heftier price tag? <br />
<br />
"For all I know, the Platinum plan might include virtual goods credits for various Microsoft games," Pachter posits. "If members could get specialized<em> Halo</em> armor or weapons worth the extra $40, they might be more willing to sign up, and it doesn't really cost Microsoft anything to offer things like that." You know what? We may know a few people willing to pay for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=recon+armor&amp;invocationType=wl-joystiq">something</a> like that.<br />
<br />

If collecting virtual Trophies has become something of an addiction, you should be playing close attention to <em>Sly Cooper Collection</em>. Like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/god-of-war-collection"><em>God of War Collection</em></a> before it, each game will feature its own Platinum -- meaning, you'll be able to get up to three Platinum Trophies in this HD remix. However, there are a few PlayStation Move mini-games being added, meaning you'll likely need to buy a Move if you want to get every possible Trophy.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/21/sly-cooper-collection-nabs-three-platinum-trophies/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sly Cooper Collection nabs three Platinum Trophies</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/21/sly-cooper-collection-nabs-three-platinum-trophies/">Sly Cooper Collection nabs three Platinum Trophies</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 21 Jun 2010 14:30:00 EST. No one was exactly sure if Sony's gamble with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/heavy-rain"><em>Heavy Rain</em></a> would pay off. With no aliens, no stealth kills, and no epic boss battles, the game strayed so far from the mainstream norm that some wondered if it could possibly succeed. Considering the incredible technical effort <em>Heavy Rain</em> represented, it's clear that this was also an <em>expensive</em> experiment for both Sony and Quantic Dream to take on.<br />
<br />
After seven weeks of release, <em>Heavy Rain</em> has managed to sell through a million units worldwide, according to an announcement on the <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/04/13/flood-warning-heavy-rain-surpasses-the-million-mark/">PlayStation.Blog</a>. No specifics are offered, but we'll deduce that Europe represents the largest piece of the sales pie; <em>Heavy Rain</em> was completely sold out in that part of the world.<br />
<br />
It's unclear if a million units sold is enough for Quantic Dream and Sony to break even on <em>Heavy Rain</em>'s lengthy development. Undoubtedly, the game will continue selling through the year, which has us hopeful that the industry will be unafraid to invest in another game like it in the future.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/13/heavy-rain-sells-one-million-worldwide/">Heavy Rain sells one million worldwide</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 Apr 2010 11:00:00 EST. Great. We're pretty certain Square Enix is going to make another one of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/13/final-fantasy-xiii-launches-march-9-2010-on-ps3-xbox-360/">these videos</a> now. With sales of "more than one million units in North America over the first five days," Square Enix has good reason for that smug look on its face. Taking into account European sales, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/final-fantasy-xiii"><em>Final Fantasy XIII</em></a> has "recorded the largest first-week sales in franchise history."<br />
<br />
A number of factors undoubtedly contributed to the record-breaking success of the latest iteration of the JRPG series. Not only is it the first numbered <em>Final Fantasy</em> game on a current generation system, but it's also the first game in the franchise to appear on two platforms -- and two continents -- simultaneously. Finally, it's been nearly four years since the release of <em>Final Fantasy XII</em> on PS2. Fans were clearly hungry for a real <em>Final Fantasy</em> fix.<br />

Luckily for Square Enix, there's much, much more <em>Final Fantasy</em> in the works: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/final-fantasy-xiv"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a> is due this year and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/final-fantasy-versus-xiii"><em>Final Fantasy Versus XIII </em></a>should be ready by the time Square Enix is done counting <em>all this money</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/19/final-fantasy-xiii-fastest-selling-game-in-franchise-square-eni/">Final Fantasy XIII fastest selling game in franchise, Square Enix claims</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 19 Mar 2010 16:30:00 EST. It seems like a whole mess of outlets took a trip to Tokyo recently to play Platinum's upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/vanquish"><em>Vanquish</em></a>. ... What? Oh, well, no, we weren't there. It's fine though, it is. We're pretty sure that our invitation just got lost in the mail. (Our mail guy's a total Japanophile, so we'd believe it.) Besides, we were really busy that week. Just really busy with various things that we were doing.<br />
<br />
... Anyway, we've read all the preview coverage that went up today and these are the broad strokes:<br />
<br />
You'll play as a government agent named Sam who's using his futuristic battle suit, large arsenal and martial arts skills to recapture a solar-powered space station just used by Russia to blow up San Francisco. (Side note: If you want to make an armor guy mad, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/17/review-shadow-complex-xbla/">attack San Francisco</a>.) As for what its third-person action feels like, we're seeing a lot of descriptors like "intense" and "frenetic," perhaps a move away from bulkier action heroes like Marcus and the Chief. The only character detail we know about Sam is that he smokes mid-fight, which is pretty much all we need to know. One sad note: No online multiplayer. Well, maybe in <em>Vanquish 2: Still Vanquishin'</em>. <br />
<br />
What's that? You still want more? Well, maybe try <a href="http://blogs.sega.com/europe/2010/03/04/sega-and-platinumgames-reveal-vanquish/">Sega's blog</a> or <a href="http://gameinformer.com/games/vanquish/b/ps3/archive/2010/03/04/preview.aspx">Game Informer</a> or <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/vanquish-preview?page=1">Eurogamer </a>or basically <em>anywhere but here</em>. No, we told you, it's fine. *sniff*<br />

It may not have <em>charted</em> in the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/11/january-npd-mass-effect-2-debuts-at-2-hardware-is-down/">January NPDs</a>, but <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/uncharted-2"><em>Uncharted 2</em></a> has stealthily beaten sales of the first game in the series, according to PlayStation's <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/02/thank-you-for-a-great-2009/">Jack Tretton</a>. We can think of a number of reasons why: Certainly, the growing install base of the PS3 has something to do with franchise's growing success; and perhaps the addition of multiplayer makes <em>Uncharted 2</em> a more attractive purchase than the first game; or maybe it's simply because it's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/01/joystiqs-top-10-of-2009-uncharted-2-among-thieves/">pretty darn good</a>.<br />
<br />
<em>Uncharted 2</em> sales are "now closing in on three million copies sold worldwide," according to Tretton. Considering those figures, it's clear that Sony management should have one directive for developer Naughty Dog: "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/uncharted-3">Make another one</a>, please!"<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/12/uncharted-2-outselling-first-closing-in-on-3-million-sold/">Uncharted 2 outselling first game, 'closing in' on 3m sold</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 12 Feb 2010 10:59:00 EST. On this evening's "World Exclusive" laden episode of GameTrailers TV, host Geoff Keighley unveiled the latest game from Japanese development all-star team <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/platinum-games">Platinum Games</a>, a futuristic shooter named <em>Vanquish</em>. From the bit of trailer we saw in tonight's show, the game is set on US soil sometime in the future. Also, hey, there are some mechs -- it's from Japan, right? We've got the whole thing embedded after the break, should you be so inclined. <br />
<br />
As noted <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/25/platinum-games-fourth-game-to-be-announced-on-this-weeks-gttv/">earlier this week</a>, the upcoming game comes from <em>Resident Evil</em> designer Shinji Mikami and marks the fourth title from the development studio -- the last of a four game deal with Sega <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/20/sega-talks-platinum-games-deal-franchises/">inked back in 2008</a>. Though we've got tonight's game announce still fresh on our brain box, we have to wonder what this means in terms of a publisher for upcoming games from <em>all those other</em> famous developers sitting around Platinum Games HQ, wondering what to do next. Okay, okay, they're probably not just sitting around. But still!<br />
<br />
No consoles were named or release windows given -- heck, the whole trailer was live-action -- but we have to imagine that kind of info isn't too far off.<br type="_moz" /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/29/platinum-games-fourth-game-is-vanquish/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Platinum Games' fourth game is Vanquish</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/29/platinum-games-fourth-game-is-vanquish/">Platinum Games' fourth game is Vanquish</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 29 Jan 2010 01:05:00 EST. Did you know that the <em>God of War Collection</em> features two <em>God of War</em> games: <em>God of War</em> and <em>God of War II</em>? Oh, you could tell from the box art? Well, did you know that the <em>God of War Collection</em> puts both <em>God of War</em> and <em>God of War II</em> on a single Blu-ray disc, remastered in 720p HD for PS3? Oh, so you've been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/16/this-is-what-the-god-of-war-collection-will-look-like-on-your-ps/">following this game</a>, huh?<br />
<br />
While everything about the aptly titled re-release has been unsurprising thus far, we were caught off-guard by this tidbit revealed by the <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/10/god-of-war-collection-ships-november-17th-plan-your-trophy-hunt-now/">PlayStation.blog</a>. The Kratos Kompilation has not one but <em>two</em> Platinum Trophies, one for each title. Trophy hunters need not worry about the difficulty of nabbing both Platinums: neither will require playing the game on the hardest difficulty. In fact, "Getting My Ass Kicked" encourages dying enough times to unlock Easy Mode.<br />
<br />
The <em>God of War Collection</em> will ship to retailers on November 17th. Well, unless you <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/03/god-of-war-collection-not-hitting-europe-this-year/">live in Europe</a> ...<br />

The European budget line of "Platinum" titles has <a href="http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2009/09/07/playstation-3-platinum-range-expands/">expanded</a> quite significantly, adding four new titles for the low price of &pound;19.99 / &euro;29.99. The collection now includes <em>Metal Gear Solid 4</em>, <em>MotorStorm: Pacific Rift</em>, <em>Resistance 2</em> and <em>Killzone 2</em>.<br /><br />We're a bit jealous of our European friends, as games rarely get the "Greatest Hits" label so soon. <em>Killzone 2</em>, for example, released just a little over six months ago. However, it makes sense to drop the price of these games, especially <em>Killzone 2</em>, so soon -- there are <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/08/chart-track-ps3-sales-up-999-percent-in-uk/">a lot of new PS3 owners</a> out there, hungry to try out the system's greatest games.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/08/scee-platinum-line-expands-includes-resistance-2-killzone-2/">SCEE Platinum line expands, includes Resistance 2, Killzone 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Sep 2009 15:15:00 EST. We don't dare hope for the kind of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/07/a-brief-history-of-club-nintendo-awesomeness/">awesomeness</a> seen in Japan's Platinum rewards, but we <em>want</em> free things.<br /><br />If you aren't yet at 300 coins (for Gold) or 600 coins (for Platinum), and you've got more games to register, get to it <em>right now!</em> If you've been thinking of picking up <em>Punch-Out!!</em> or something this week, you should probably do it <em>today!</em> Conversely, if you're at 600 now and you have more stuff to register, wait until tomorrow so it counts toward next year's total!<br /><br />If you're not sure about the eligibility of an older (pre-Club Nintendo) game and don't want to waste time registering it, consult the list of eligible games in the "Product Registration" area of the <a href="http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/club/en/faq.jsp#vers">Club Nintendo FAQ</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/30/psa-register-your-games-for-club-nintendo-elite-status-today/">PSA: Register your games for Club Nintendo elite status today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 30 Jun 2009 16:15:00 EST. Atsushi Inaba, creator of <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/okami"><em>Okami</em></a> and the upcoming <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/madworld"><em>Madworld</em></a>, contends that western game developers are better than their Japanese counterparts in a new <a href="http://www.developmag.com/interviews/396/QA-Platinum-Games-Atsushi-Inaba">interview</a> with <em>Develop</em>. According to Inaba, Japanese developers have to "work hard" to match the standards of western developers. He adds that game development will soon be "about individual developers and not about what country they are in" and that the games industry is being consumed by the ever-growing beast, <em>Globalizilla</em> -- the embodiment of globalization, of course. (Note: Inaba did not specifically utter the name "Globalizilla" -- probably because he's superstitious.)<br /><br />When asked about opportunities for Japanese developers, Inaba stated that there were many opportunities, but that such opportunities hinge on a developer's ability to sell products to a global audience. He further added that it's important to focus on new IP in order to keep innovation alive in the industry, stating, "Industries that innovate and produce something new will always survive in the global marketplace." So, we shouldn't expect a <em>Madworld</em> sequel then?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/20/inaba-western-devs-superior-to-japanese-devs/">Inaba: Western devs 'superior' to Japanese devs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 20 Feb 2009 22:40:00 EST. Unsurprisingly, Konami's grandpa-spy sim <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Metal%20Gear%20Solid%204">Metal Gear Solid 4</a></em> sold extremely well across the globe -- so well, in fact, that the game <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/mgs4-joins-ps3-platinum-portfolio">has reached the ever prestigious Platinum Range in Europe</a>, an honor bestowed to titles that reach sales upward of 400,000 within their first year on the market. A Platinum edition of the game will hit European store shelves on March 5, bringing with it some slightly updated box art and a discounted price of EUR 29.95 (or GBP 19.99). <br /><br />Hopefully, the game will follow suit by qualifying for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/playstation-3-greatest-hits-buyers-guide/">Greatest Hits status</a> in North America, an honor that brings a similar discount to $29.99, as well as a provocative crimson jewel case. We've begun growing our <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2006/05/12/">unsettling math teacher moustaches</a> in feverish anticipation.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/16/metal-gear-solid-4-going-platinum-on-march-5/">Metal Gear Solid 4 going Platinum on March 5</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 Feb 2009 13:30:00 EST. In celebration of the new year, Platinum Games posted on its <a href="http://platinumgames-blog.cocolog-nifty.com/blog/2009/01/post-9dbe.html#more">Japanese site</a> (and subsequently on its English-language <a href="http://www.facebook.com/notes.php?id=19840559024">Facebook</a> page) this card featuring characters from its announced titles (from left to right) <em>Mad World, Bayonetta</em> and <em>Infinite Space.</em> More importantly, however, is the brand new logo that replaces the now-antiquated <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/15/sega-announces-platinum-games-partnership-first-three-games/">blocky design</a>. <br /><br />Company President / CEO Tatsuya Minami is said to be giving a more in-depth explanation of the new logo sometime later, but in case you were wondering now, that gray color is known as Platinum Silver. Yeah, they're classy like that.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/02/platinum-games-spruces-up-logo-for-the-new-year/">Platinum Games spruces up logo for the new year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 02 Jan 2009 19:23:00 EST. <p>2009 promises to be a busy year for Platinum Games, home of Clover alumni and all-round awesomeness. <em>MadWorld</em> will be curb-stomping our happy, grateful faces into pulpy mush in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/17/nintendo-unleashes-full-q1-schedule/">March</a>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/20/infinite-space-and-a-finite-film/">Infinite Space</a></em> will grace our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/">DSes</a>, and the company is also developing <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayonetta">some game</a> for <em><a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/">the</a> </em><a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/"><em>others</em></a>.</p>
<p>Faced with such an intimidating stack of deadlines, the company took drastic action, and <em>designed</em> <em>a new logo</em>. Replacing the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/15/sega-announces-platinum-games-partnership-first-three-games/">old design</a> is what looks like a slightly shorter, plumper version of the PlayStation "P," alongside ... a star? A shuriken? Something great, anyway. Something which will fill the the worker ants with pride and increase output by 493% this calendar year. Oh, and it's all lovingly rendered in "Platinum Silver," don'cha know.</p>

Some games have a rough ride. It's not easy being exclusive to a game console with a smaller install base than their competitors. It's even harder being released during those crazy Q4 months, when you're up against massive, highly anticipated titles. Thankfully, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/motorstorm-pacific-rift"><em>MotorStorm Pacific Rift</em></a> has done well, despite these obstacles, already selling over one million units worldwide. <br /><br />The game reached this milestone after just a month on the shelves. Pretty good, if you ask us. No doubt <em>Pacific Rift</em> owes much of its success to its predecessor. Hopefully more first party titles will reach this milestone, and beyond, before the end of the year. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/littlebigplanet"><em>LittleBigPlanet</em></a>, we're looking at you.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/09/motorstorm-pacific-rift-sells-a-million-units-worldwide/">MotorStorm Pacific Rift sells a million units worldwide</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 09 Dec 2008 13:30:00 EST. See, the game has <a href="http://www.famitsu.com/game/news/1218102_1124.html">sold 967,675 copies in its first two days</a> on Japanese store shelves, which is close to a million, which means that, if <em>Pok&eacute;mon Platinum</em> were an American music album, it would almost be a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_music_recording_sales_certifications">platinum record</a>. Once we realized that, the headline just wrote itself. As did this explanatory paragraph ...<br /><br />Look, <em>Pok&eacute;mon</em> games are still popular in Japan, all right? That's all we're trying to say here! Sheesh! If you're not into weapon based fighting games with a Star Wars twist, there's very little else that might interest you. By "very little" we do, of course, mean "nothing." If you live in Europe, however, you might be interested in knowing that a bunch of Platinum titles are being released this week. All of these five games are well worth their new &pound;20 price, despite the yucky yellow packaging. Here's the full release list:<br /><br /><strong>US Games</strong> <ul> <li><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ZK7ZMQ/102-5777777-4084119?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=prey0f&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creativeASIN=B000ZK7ZMQ"><em>Soulcalibur IV</em></a></li> </ul> <strong>EU Games<br /></strong> <ul> <li><a href="http://www.play.com/Games/PlayStation3/4-/5192124/Soul-Calibur-IV/Product.html"><em>Soulcalibur IV</em></a></li> <li><a href="http://www.play.com/Games/PlayStation3/4-/6108214/Uncharted-Drake-Fortune/Product.html"><em>Uncharted: Drake's Fortune</em> (Platinum)</a></li> <li><a href="http://www.play.com/Games/PlayStation3/4-/6108200/Heavenly-Sword/Product.html"><em>Heavenly Sword</em> (Platinum)</a></li> <li><a href="http://www.play.com/Games/PlayStation3/4-/6108205/MotorStorm/Product.html"><em>MotorStorm</em> (Platinum)</a></li> <li><a href="http://www.play.com/Games/PlayStation3/4-/6108218/Resistance-Fall-Of-Man/Product.html"><em>Resistance: Fall of Man</em> (Platinum)</a></li> <li><a href="http://www.play.com/Games/PlayStation3/4-/6108220/Ratchet-Clank-Tools-Of-Destruction/Product.html"><em>Ratchet &amp; Clank Future: Tools Of Destruction</em> (Platinum)</a></li> </ul> <strong>Asian Games<br /></strong> <ul> <li><a href="http://www.play-asia.com/SOap-23-83-57ld-71-ze-49-en-84-j-70-2sw5.html"><em>Soulcalibur IV</em></a></li> <li><em><a href="http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-ze-49-en-70-2qy8.html">Beijing Olympics 2008</a></em></li> </ul> Protip: Play.com have cut &pound;2 off their Platinum price for the full range. &pound;18 for <em>Uncharted </em>or <em>Ratchet &amp; Clank</em>? Members of Japan's Pok&eacute;mon Daisuki Club will soon be able to (enter a raffle to potentially) buy a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/15/pokemon-platinum-giratinas-wormy-new-form/">Giratina</a> edition Nintendo DS Lite bundle, consisting of <span style="font-style: italic;">Pok&eacute;mon Platinum </span>and a swoon-worthy Lite that has been subtly branded with the <span style="font-style: italic;">Platinum</span> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/19/pokemon-platinum-boxart-is-super-effective-at-being-awesome/">cover star</a>.<br /><br />Like many <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/25/limited-edition-dses-spotted-at-nintendo-world-store/">limited edition DSes</a>, supply is expected to be short, so hopeful owners will have to submit an entry form to enter the draw, where they could win the right to give Nintendo money -- &yen;21,600 ($203), to be precise. The raffle ends on July 14th (and is for Japanese residents only), and 1,000 of the names drawn will be eligible for an even rarer metallic Giratina figurine. Remind us again, please: why are we still living in not-Japan?<br /><br />Go past the break for a closer look.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/nintendo-japan-sent-out-giratina-ds-lite-ds-fanboy-fainted/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo Japan sent out GIRATINA DS LITE! We <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/26/sony-confirm-european-platinum-range-but-keep-schtum-on-details/">knew</a> Europe was getting a Platinum budget range for PS3 games. However, we didn't know they'd be donning such cheap-looking box art. The Spanish line of box art (which may expand to the rest of Europe) features a heavy coat of yellow paint. It reminds us a lot of Japan's budget line of games. Budget repackaging of popular games have always featured less-than-ideal box work. But, how can we complain when we're getting excellent games at lower prices? If some yellow ink is the price to pay for cheap prices, we say bring it on.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://kotaku.com/5018186/box-art-time-europes-ps3-platinum-range">Kotaku</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/20/ps3-platinum-range-dons-yellow-in-spain/">PS3 platinum range dons yellow in Spain</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 20 Jun 2008 12:05:00 EST. Can we just say, Nintendo: <em>loving</em> the boxart for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/11/corocoro-reveals-more-on-upcoming-pokemon-platinum/"><em>Pok&eacute;mon Platinum</em></a>. Whereas the art for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pokemon-diamond-and-pearl/871395/full/"><em>Diamond</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pokemon-diamond-and-pearl/871396//full/"><em>Pearl</em></a> relied on darker, more subdued colors, <em>Platinum</em>'s box employs a striking combination of red, black, and white, blasting out in beams from the center of the cover. It's almost as though cover star Giratina is leaping <em>right out of the box</em> at the viewer/shopper. He's coming to get you, kids! <em>That</em> will be under your bed tonight! <em>Muahaha</em>.<br /><br />As well as the cover, GAME Watch also has a small pool of character art (featuring Regice, Registeel, Regirock, and Regigigas) and screens (which can be found in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/pokemon-platinum/871385/">our gallery</a>). It looks ... well, pretty much like the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/diamond">same</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pearl">game</a> you bought last year. Will that stop you buying it? Nope, thought not.<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/19/pokemon-platinum-boxart-is-super-effective-at-being-awesome/">Pokemon Platinum boxart is super effective at being awesome</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Jun 2008 12:30:00 EST. We're sure that some of you will be buying <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/13/a-better-look-at-corocoro-comics-pokemon-platinum-reveal/"><em>Pok&eacute;mon Platinum</em></a> (whenever it ends up coming out here) just for this thing, so here's a nice clear picture of it. This is the new form of Giratina, <em>Platinum's</em> cover Pokeman. <em>Dengeki</em> labels it the "Origin" form, and it's pretty clear that this is some kind of larval stage in the Ghost/Dragon Legendary Pok&eacute;mon's development, with spikes sticking out where its legs go.<br /><br />The screen shown in the CoroCoro scan, with the male trainer's <em>new jacket</em>, is also available in higher quality at the link, along with another screen featuring some mysterious shadow thing.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/15/pokemon-platinum-giratinas-wormy-new-form/">Pokemon Platinum: Giratina's wormy new form</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 May 2008 11:45:00 EST. It features an online version of the weird Underground feature from <em>Diamond </em>and <em>Pearl</em>, an <em>Emerald</em>-like "Battle Island," and some new forms for critters like Giratina and Shaymin. <br /><br />According to TheTanooki, <em>Platinum</em> will be out in September in Japan. All of this is classifiable as "rumor" right now, but that scan looks pretty real.<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/11/corocoro-comic-reveals-pokemon-platinum/">Rumor: CoroCoro Comic reveals Pokemon Platinum</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 11 May 2008 19:30:00 EST. Jeux-France has suggested that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/motorstorm"><em>MotorStorm</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/heavenly-sword"><em>Heavenly Sword</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resistance"><em>Resistance: Fall of Man</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/f1"><em>Formula One Championship Edition</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Lair"><em>Lair</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/folklore"><em>Folklore</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ridge-racer"><em>Ridge Racer 7</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/genji"><em>Genji: Days of the Blade</em></a> will all be made available within the platinum range and will sell for &euro;40 each (probably closer to &pound;30 for the UK). A number of games have been re-released in Japan recently under a budget price in the "The Best" range which includes a few of the games listed above as well as <em>Ninja Gaiden: Sigma</em> and Gundam: Target in Sight. <br /></div>
<em><br /></em>Sony refuses to comment on the specifics of a platinum range for Europe but continues to state that it will definitely happen one day. We just hope the box art won't look as disgusting as the Japanese budget range. Since when has the PS3 ever been associated with the color yellow? Bizarre design choice, <a href="http://image4.play-asia.com/640/6p/pa.120878.7.jpg">that one</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/26/sony-confirm-european-platinum-range-but-keep-schtum-on-details/">Sony confirms European platinum range but keeps schtum on details</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 26 Mar 2008 01:45:00 EST. However, no decisions have yet been made on timing or line-up."<br /><br />Of course, we all knew it was just a matter of time before Sony released it's PlayStation 3 the Best, Platinum, Greatest Hits or whatever else it chooses to call them throughout the world. Now, the questions that remain are when they'll arrive, how much they'll be priced at and if the same games will get selected across all major regions.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/04/sony-platinum-ps3-titles-likely-coming-to-europe/">Sony: Platinum PS3 titles likely coming to Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 04 Feb 2008 13:30:00 EST. The "Best" games will sell for &yen;3,800 ($36), which represents a saving of roughly &yen;2,200 ($21) for Sony-published games and &yen;3,200 ($30) for third-party titles.<br />
<br />
On the other side of the ocean, Sony told <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=32694">GamesIndustry.biz</a> that a similar "Platinum" range of budget games would likely arrive in Europe. "We have introduced a Platinum range of best-selling titles for all of our platforms to date, and it is likely that we will do so in the future for PS3," said a spokesman, noting that the timing and lineup had yet to be finalized. <br />
<br />
We'll let you know what Sony America has to say about a budget lineup as soon as they accept our collect call.<br />

In yesterday's <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/51081">investor call</a>, Electronic Arts confirmed that sales of <em>Crysis </em>have gone platinum, meaning that over 1 million units had been sold since its launch. That figure marks a drastic improvement over <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/14/crysis-sales-in-crisis-ut3-gets-fragged-too/">earlier indications</a> that consumer interest in the game was, well, in crisis. <br /><br />At this month's GDC, developer CryTek will be showing off a console version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/29/console-cryengine-2-will-be-shown-at-gdc-console-crysis-still-n/">CryEngine 2</a>, although a console version of <em>Crysis</em> itself has not been announced. Of course, EA could pull a "surprise" announcement -- <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2008/01/30">dun dun dun</a>!<br /> <br />[Via <a href="http://www.incrysis.com/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=612">inCrysis</a>; thanks to everyone who sent this in!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/01/crysis-goes-platinum/">Crysis goes platinum</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Feb 2008 10:30:00 EST. Firing off big-headed predictions is just part of the business, but when Xbox 360 group product manager Aaron Greenberg told <a href="http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=7650&amp;Itemid=2" target="_blank">Next-Gen</a> that Microsoft expects to have "at least seven titles that will each sell over a million units" this holiday, maybe he wasn't being so bold -- just optimistic. "I don't think any other platform will even come close to that," Greenberg concluded. He's right. But can Xbox 360?<br /> <br />Let's add it up: <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Halo3/">Halo 3</a></em>, yes, of course. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Madden/">Madden</a></em> too. That's two. By year's end, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/BioShock/">BioShock</a></em> also will have had plenty of time to reach the million-sold mark; and Microsoft is counting on its other big exclusive, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/MassEffect/">Mass Effect</a></em>, to get there too (though in considerably less time). That's four. <em>Guitar Hero III</em>, <em>Call of Duty 4</em>, and <em>Assassin's Creed</em> are the three other most likelies to bring the tally to seven, but even <em>Rock Band</em>, <em>The Simpsons</em>, <em>Orange Box</em>, <em>skate</em>, <em>Tony Hawk</em>, <em>PGR4</em>, <em>Need for Speed ProStreet</em>, or an <em>NBA</em> game could move enough units -- are we missing any?<br /><br />If Microsoft can win over consumers with its exclusives (and perhaps the newly proposed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/23/microsoft-touts-new-family-focus-with-cartoon-downloads/" target="_blank">family plan</a>), then Xbox 360 will also take the lion's share of multiplatform game sales, which could, remarkably, produce something like 7 different platinum-selling games during a loosely-defined holiday season. But Sony has challenged with competitively priced <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/18/sony-officially-bringing-40gb-ps3-to-us/" target="_blank">PlayStation 3 SKUs</a> and will manage to produce its own lineup of exclusives in <em>Heavenly Sword</em>, <em>Warhawk</em>, <em>Ratchet</em>, and <em>Uncharted</em>, plus <em>Haze</em>, and hopefully, if only temporarily, <em>UT3</em>. Of course, there's also Wii and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/supermariogalaxy" target="_blank">Mario</a></em>, a pair that could easily be the one-stop-shop solution for holiday gift buyers.<br /><br />So were these bold words from Microsoft? No, but the goal ain't no cakewalk neither.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/23/microsoft-anticipates-7-million-sellers-this-holiday-at-least/">Microsoft anticipates 7 million-sellers this holiday, 'at least'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 23 Oct 2007 17:10:00 EST. Of course, we have a similar "registering" procedure at <a href="http://www.mynintendo.com">MyNintendo.com</a>, but we rarely have anything to show for it ... we got a <em>Metroid Prime 2</em> demo disc, once. Woo-hoo.<br /><br />It turns out that platinum members (a status obtained by magically accruing four hundred points in a year) of Club Nintendo get to choose between two wonderful prizes: <em>Tingle's Balloon Fight, </em>for the DS, or a custom battery pack cover with your very own Mii imprinted on the back. The games are:<br />
<br />
<em>Perfect Dark Zero<br />
Project Gotham Racing 3<br />
Kameo: Elements of Power<br />
Need for Speed Most Wanted<br />
<br />
</em>Conspicuously missing from the list is <em>Call of Duty 2</em>, the 360's first <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/12/call-of-duty-2-is-first-game-to-sell-1m-units-on-xbox-360/">million</a> seller. The first four Platinum Hits will be available for the bargain price of $29.99 starting October 15th -- the second set should be announced in the spring of 2007. It's a far cry from what we considered a bargain last gen, but it's definitely better than nothing.
