The demo features a mission from the invasion and another later in the game. The demo also supports Kinect voice recognition.

Additionally, a new CG trailer is set to premiere during this week's episode of The Walking Dead on AMC.
In his latest advisory note to investors, Wedbush Morgan prognosticator and analyst Michael Pachter goes on record with his belief that we'll see "another price cut for both systems some time this year (around summer)," noting in the email that "because its manufacturing costs are lower, Microsoft has the ability to lower price as early as March or April."

In lieu of a price cut on Microsoft's part so soon, Pachter feels that the company may instead introduce "a more feature-packed Xbox 360 in early 2010 (likely with a 250GB hard drive) at the same $299 price point." The great seer believes that Microsoft will only drop the price on its console before summer "if it begins to lose significant market share to Sony," adding that he anticipates last fall's price cut on PS3 will continue to help Sony gain ground on Microsoft.

On the portable front, Pachter doesn't expect PSP Go (remember that?) to make much headway this year unless Sony prices it "more reasonably," and says that the biggest challenge facing Nintendo DS is "its own high installed base," stating that he anticipates sales of the handheld to steadily decline in 2010. Good thing Nintendo's started talking about a "DS2," huh?

Pachter: More console price cuts coming by summer originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 12 Jan 2010 20:00:00 EST.
White Knight Chronicles has changed a lot since we played it at Tokyo Game Show last year. Our conclusion at the time was that the game would be a gorgeous JRPG with an intriguing, customizable battle system; an exciting prospect for RPG-starved PS3 owners to be sure. However, after today's White Knight Chronicles presentation, we're sure the game has the potential to be much more than that.

A Level-5 employee introduced us to the game's story: It follows a boy and his search for a kidnapped princess slash love interest after discovering a conveniently hidden set of magic armor ... a tad clichéd (even by Japanese standards). In order to demonstrate the game's sense of enormity and scale we were shown a few concept pieces for the game. While rolling plains and towering castles are par for the course when it comes to JRPGs, it's been a while since we've seen an entire town straddled atop an enormous creature.

We covered the battle system quite extensively at TGS last year. We took the opportunity to space out a little while the developers explained how to link character abilities together into combos, using the palette menu and how Leonard can transform into the eponymous White Knight. Not that we were bored -- the battle system was the only thing that really set White Knight Chronicles apart. Until it was revealed that the game would have a four-player online mode, that is.

Gallery: White Knight Chronicles TGS 2008

Continue reading TGS 08: White Knight Chronicles impressions

TGS 08: White Knight Chronicles impressions originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 11 Oct 2008 13:00:00 EST. According to Ive's story, he sent in his faulty system to be repaired, only to be told that his warranty had been voided by the massive amounts of dust that had accumulated within the casing.

Here's our favorite part of the story: When asked what part of the warranty says that a dusty system cannot be replaced, his helpful customer service representative told him that dust collection could either be considered customer abuse, or an act of God. We'd like to think that if the Lord did destroy Ive's PS3, he would do so with a plague of locusts, or perhaps a well-placed bolt of lightning. Dust collection just lacks that celestial panache, you know?

Update: The Consumerist has more on this, an apparent confusion within the realms of customer support. Dust obviously doesn't void your warranty, but it seems it was cited as evidence of neglect in this case (and forms of neglect do void the system's warranty).

[Thanks, SickNic]
God destroys young man's PS3 with dust [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 10 Nov 2007 19:15:00 EST. According to 1UP's Quartermann's Nostradamian prediction you might be able to get your BioShock fix soon. In the latest rotation of EGM's rumor mill, the exclusivity of the underseas fiasco has been brought into question, and PS3 owners could find themselves frolicking through Rapture sometime in 2008. However, this report contradicts the statement of BioShock's lead designer Ken Levine that the game is not PS3 bound. 2K Games, would you kindly confirm or deny this rumor?

Quartermann also has great news for the feverish fans of FOXHOUND who were upset by the recent MGS4 delay - a new Metal Gear game for the PSP is on it's way, ready to heal those wounds. Reportedly, Kojima Productions is working on the title right now, which will "take Snake back to the early days of his career." While it seems unlikely to be getting PlayStation rumors from a Nintendo site, Go Nintendo has a rumor roundup from the Japanese gaming magazine Game Lab, which drops the hint that Sony might be working on a pressure and touch sensitive mat to coincide with Afrika's eventual release.

We're not sure what happened to Afrika after it was shown off at last year's Sony presentation at TGS, but it managed to disappear faster than some endangered species. If they are working on a peripheral that facilitates some sort of innovative gameplay it could explain the long delay, but with no details out we have no idea how the game would actually work. Stomp your feet to cause a stampede? Run like a gazelle to escape the lions? Hopefully we'll know more soon, probably right before the game is released in 2012.
Rumor: Sony's mysterious Afrika to use pressure pad originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Aug 2007 16:30:00 EST. PS3 Vault really decided to try and put their console to the test by subjecting it to some pretty brutal treatment, including sticking the thing, while working, into a sauna for 108 hours. They report "to our surprise the only incident we noticed was a slight burning smell that came in around 64 hours." Boy, they really missed a chance to actually try grilling with this thing?

We have a feeling that if you tried that with the Xbox 360, you'd end up with a red ring of death and then some. A towel couldn't possibly save it from these conditions. Hit the link to see all of the abuse they subjected it to, and marvel at how it kept working. Please, don't try this at home unless you'd really like to toss your warranty out the window.
PS3 survives 108 straight hours in a sweatbox originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 13 Aug 2007 21:00:00 EST. We wouldn't do it to ours, even if these tests are, in fact, true. With that disclaimer, let's talk about the "108 hour" tests a set of PS3's went through to see how much the system could handle before failing. How much could they handle? Apparently, everything. PS3's were played for 108 hours straight, switching between games and Blu-ray movies. If you want a more detailed list of the test's parameters, they're here. Three scenarios all came with the same result: the PS3 freakin' rocks.

In a standard living room, the PS3 was perfectly fine except for a strange noise coming from the disc tray after 12 hours. Nothing surprising there!

The PS3 was put in the back of a freezer van for the second test, where the temperature gradually went from 50 degrees to 0 degrees (Fahrenheit). When the temperature reached zero, the PS3 started to become sluggish and eventually, the screen blacked out. However, this was due to a power cord getting a bit too moist -- the PS3 still worked fine.

Placing the PS3 in a hot sauna seems like a terrible idea -- where the temperature went from 100 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit over time. After 64 hours, there was a slight burning smell and after 108 hours, the console was extremely hot (no, really?) but the console still worked fine after 108 hours.

Amazing stuff, really. Again, we would never try to play our PS3 for 108 hours straight in our living room, let alone a freezer or hot sauna. Nor would we recommend you doing so! We'll take this test and their results with a grain of salt, but we have to admit -- our PS3's haven't had any trouble despite how long we've played them. So either the PS3 is indestructible, or it has every disease known to man. Anyone on their second PS3?
Is the PS3 indestructible? originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 13 Aug 2007 15:00:00 EST. We'd outline it, but we're too lazy. There's a madly laughing clown. A lot of debate has been floating around the PS3 Forums about this picture, but most seem to agree -- Twisted Metal. It's been a long time, what with the last TM game coming around the PS2's launch.

Why do we think it's Twisted Metal? What other game has a clown that would be so delighted to have an atomic explosion bearing a laughing clown hidden therein? Only Sweet Tooth will suffice. Yeah, the face doesn't look as dark and sadistic as Sweet Tooth, but the fact remains: there is an explosion and it is a clown. We welcome Twisted Metal coming on the PS3, even if it's a collection of the old games. Though we'd love a new entry with some badass online modes and "Create Your Own" car of sometimes-humorous death.
Rumor: Twisted Metal PS3 hinted at in clownsplosion? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Jul 2007 21:30:00 EST. Heck, we already said that it was making its debut sometime in July. We've now got confirmation that the demo is, in fact, complete. Part of the Ninja Theory team came out on their official forums and said "it's in the bag ... so now it's a case of Sony deciding when they feel is the best time to release it to PlayStation Network." By that, we couldn't help but squeal like a schoolgirl with a crush. Could they mean this Thursday's update?

Not likely. Seems the demo itself is actually slated for next Thursday. You know, the 26th. We don't mind waiting an extra week, since most of the PS3 Fanboy staff is still in a hot competition to keep the highest score amongst one another in Super Stardust HD. As far as the game itself, Heavenly Sword is complete and going through the bug-fixing stage. If that's true, they should release it early. We're tired of waiting for this fantastic looking "launch title", honestly.

[Thanks, DolphGB!]

[via PS3Attitude]
Heavenly Sword demo gets a date, no tongue originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Jul 2007 17:00:00 EST. The only exclusive movie studio for HD DVD, Universal, is getting pressured into supporting Blu-ray. A lot of persuading is going on, apparently, for them to release their films on Blu-ray.

There are reports that, in Europe, standalone HD DVD players outsell standalone Blu-ray players by 70%. Of course they do. The PS3 is a cheaper alternative with more capabilities, so that's a pretty unfair report. To further offset that report, actual movie sales dip the 70% advantage towards those lovely Blu babies. Even so, HD films are still a niche market and moving to support their "competition" isn't high on Universal's list of priorities. Their standard DVDs still sell just fine and since the PS3 can upscale those, we're not too hurt if Universal decides to stick to their guns and support HD DVD to the bitter end. First up, the strangely addictive and get-nothing-accomplished gameplay of Disgaea is making its way onto the PS3. Secondly, donuts were buy two, get one free this morning. Thirdly, we've got some White Knight Story screenshots to share with you, courtesy of IGN. They are awesome, because we're finally starting to get a sense of scale for the great White Knight himself. At least, that's who we imagine is featured in one of the screens.

Another screenshot is what appears to be a shop menu, but ... for some reason, we can't help but think it's a character creation screen. If someone could translate the menu, we'd know for sure. Does this mean you create your main hero, or perhaps create your own personal party member? If so, that would be the coolest thing ever. It's like putting yourself in the shoes of not the "silent protagonist", but "that guy who happened to travel with the world's greatest hero." We know, that sounds odd, but from a writing standpoint, it's a nice touch that we hope is what we assume it is.

[UPDATE] Word has reached us the White Knight Story will be playable at the Tokyo Game Show in September. We'll report back to you with our hands-on impressions during the event.
A triumvirate of White Knight Story screenshots [UPDATE] originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Jul 2007 14:00:00 EST. Sony mentioned during their conference that sales at all their major resalers had doubled already and it looks like they weren't kidding -- Amazon just ran out of their entire stock of PlayStation 3s and aren't getting anything until next week. Normally, stocking issues is more of a Wii phenomenon but it looks like a lot of people were either waiting in baited anticipation for the price cut, or a lot of people are scared Sony is going to jack the price of the PS3 back up to 600 dollars later this year.

Interestingly, sales of the PlayStation 3 have been so strong that its pushed the Amazon special pack-in movie Resident Evil into the top 5 movie sellers across all formats, including DVDs. That's something that even top tier Blu-ray releases can rarely do for even a couple days, and Resident Evil has been holding there all week. Since it's pretty unlikely that an older Blu-ray disc would undergo such a resurrection in sales by itself, that alone indicates that the PS3 sales have been extremely good at Amazon. With great games finally coming out and a decent library starting to form, this is a good time to be a new PS3 owner -- but how long will the sales spike last? Until the only option is a $599 80GB PS3?

*UPDATE*
Looks like they got an early new shipment of PS3s and they're back in stock at Amazon. Go get your buy on!

*UPDATE 2*
Holy crap, they just ran out of stock again. They aren't the best at making quality titles ... they're more of the Kroger brand soda to Sony or Epic or Konami's name-brand colas. However, things may be turning around. First, Burnout Paradise seems to be built from the ground up on Sony's system and it's looking sharp. Then comes skate. This game looks excellent and the level of polish is impressive. We're not fond of "totally xtreem sportz" titles, but this one really makes us want to reconsider. Interesting dual-analog gameplay mechanics and a more skating-sim style make us squirm with anticipation. Check out the video. We like it!
EA's skate looks pretty darn polished and extreme originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 16 Jul 2007 17:30:00 EST. The site posting these rumors is getting a ton of hate, but we're giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming that there are, in fact, changes happening between the beta and final release. Whether the changes are those mentioned below or not, we can't say for sure.

Huge graphical update

Expanded matches -- 32 vs 32 rather than 32 max players

Plenty of downloadable content upon launch in addition to bare-bones game

Six new weapons

Four new vehicles

Hmm, something smells fishy. It's like they took one piece of news that was probably true (graphical update), then spiced it up with other bits of news that would be rather unbelievable. Following the recent IGN interview, it seems that may be the case. In all, though, rumors are rumors, so we'll go ahead and keep them filed next to our lollipop notebook and chocolate hologram disc full of skittles. We love candy.
[Thanks, Joe!]
Rumor: Warhawk already adding vehicles, weapons? originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 16 Jul 2007 10:30:00 EST. It seems that, perhaps, the PS3 will get their own content for the upcoming classic sandbox game. Phil responded thus: " ... we have a great relationship with Rockstar and we're actually working closely with them on a number of initiatives, so I do know some things that are going on, but I'm not able to share those with you now." Insert theories here.

If we can think of anything, we'd imagine that Sony is trying to get the content for the 360 version over to the PS3 version either as standard Blu-ray extras on the game disc (so they aren't technically breaking the "exclusive downloadable content" clause or whatever), or that there is some more original material planned for the PS3 version down the road. Unless you want to hear the incredibly loud sounds of E3 sprinkled with some DMC4 music, we're just warning you. Of course, there are more than one new trailer for Devil May Cry 4 up at Gametrailers, but we're just giving you a small taste of what the latest build of Capcom's title looks like. It looks very smooth, but still lacking that signature difficulty. By all means, the guy playing the demo should be getting his bum handed to him, since he's not playing that expertly. On the other hand, the enemies are all very simple and basic too, so perhaps Capcom is saving the more extreme enemies for the more extreme crowd -- those who buy the game.
Some Devil May Cry 4 action, since it's been a while originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 15 Jul 2007 10:00:00 EST. If the downloadable E3 trailer of Killzone 2 from the PS Store wasn't enough to satisfy, we've got some more in-game footage detailing parts of the demo we weren't able to see. Sure, there's a lot of button-pushing and tower-shooting, but to think about all that's happening on screen at any single moment is pretty awe-inspiring. Much more happening on these battlefields than, say, in narrow corridors. Not only that, but Sony recognizes the potential of such an application and are really concentrating their efforts on it: "I can tell you is we're working on it, we see that it's critical, not just for PSP but also for PS3, and it's something we know is super important to get right." It would be pretty cool to download a movie onto your PS3, activate Remote Play, then go watch the movie on your PSP in the middle of a mall or whatever it is kids do these days.

You may think Sony just started working on this feature, but according to Dille, it sounds like it's been in the pipes for a while. "If we launch it and it's not right, we're going to get creamed. So we want to make sure we get the consumer experience right, get the right content, and we're working really hard on it. And I don't think we're talking about years, I think this is something we could get behind really soon." If they plan to launch it soon, that would be fantastic! Could this be another feather in their Tokyo Game Show hat? We guess we'll have to wait until mid- or late September to find out!
Movie download service on its way to PS3, PSP "really soon" originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Jul 2007 16:00:00 EST. They really, really will ... It's something that is going to be a slow burner, and suddenly it's like a tsunami; it will just overtake you." This quote goes hand-in-hand with the announcement of the new PS3 bundle package in Europe, which also tells us that the 60GB PS3 model isn't going to be available in the US anymore after July (price cut rendered useless).

Will the PS3 win this holiday season with their insane lineup of games that has the PS3 Fanboy staff crying at the abuse their wallets are going to get? We'd like to think so, but every console has some heavy hitters coming out, but by the end of the fiscal year, we do believe the PS3 will have created a much larger install base. Perhaps not enough to render Mr. Reeves' predictions true, but one that will show Sony has no intention of passing off their crown.
David Reeves calls PS3 "tsunami", will win console war originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Jul 2007 13:30:00 EST. We're not allowed to use magazine scans as pictures, you see! Anyway, PS3 Forums member Jeremiah (who we doubt very much is a bullfrog) recently slapped up some Famitsu scans revealing a new PS3 title called Tears to Tiara, or something similar. The game is an RPG -- the most hardcore of role playing games, featuring anime characters who just happen to be scantily clad. For the niche audience out there, we know what you're thinking. "Why the hell haven't we heard anything about this?" We're asking the same thing, but it's an easy answer. It's probably not coming to America or Europe, just like Mist of Chaos and any other RPG that's been announced for the PS3 (except the heavy hitters, but that's why this is for the niche audience).

From the given screenshots, the game appears to be a sort of strategy-RPG, action-RPG, standard-RPG all rolled into one. We can't read Japanese, so we can't really tell you much about it. All we know is that our hands are screaming for a current generation JRPG and the Square Enix titles aren't hitting until 2008. Other than White Knight Story (also 2008, presumably), there's really been nothing on the role playing front from Japan for the PS3. It makes us sad. Well, keep your fingers crossed for a worldwide release of Tears to Tiara, even though we doubt it will happen. It looks like it would have been neat.

[via PS3 Forums]
Tears to Tiara -- will anyone other than Japan ever get a PS3 JRPG? originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Jul 2007 12:30:00 EST. Jack Tretton released his thoughts on the claims that multiplatform games look better on the Xbox 360 than the PlayStation 3. He basically reiterated the idea that it's up to the developers to take advantage of the power of the PS3 and Sony is doing everything they can to assist them in development, to ease the crushing power of the PS3's architecture.

Tretton said what everyone was thinking, too: "what's the point of porting it over to another platform if it is not going to look as good on a platform that is more expensive? Why waste any money in development doing that?" We ask the same questions every night before we go to sleep, but our pillows never answer. Tretton does not want people to think the first-party titles are going to pick up the slack, rather, he wants third party companies to know that Sony is there for them, to assist them in any way possible, so that they as well as consumers will get the most out of their ginormous black behemoth. Seriously, everyone would benefit if they just tried a bit harder.
Tretton offers hand to third party devs to take advantage of PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Jul 2007 11:30:00 EST. We've been informed that Immersion has filed for some patents and with it, indirectly filed for the release dates of their new Sony peripheral device that "will now bear Immersion's Feel The Game(R) TouchSense(R) Technology logo." When are these peripherals to be released? September.

If you're having trouble connecting the dots, the Tokyo Game Show is generally in September. Sony had to save some of its announcements so they could steal the show at TGS, much like we feel they did at E3. So, for those worried, the Rumblaxis is coming in September and you know what? We would expect the announcement at TGS to go something like "hey, we're releasing this Rumblaxis controller we're holding in our hands tomorrow at your favorite retailers. Enjoy!" We can't wait.

[Thanks, Dubbedinenglish!]
Rumblaxis coming in September -- Tokyo Game Show originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 12 Jul 2007 09:00:00 EST. The big idea behind this was Unreal Tournament 3. Namely, making it a PS3 exclusive for this financial year. That's right -- the devs responsible for Cogs of Battle want to try their hand at making the PS3 the leading platform for their hot, hot, hotly anticipated UT3. What's really impressive about this announcement isn't necessarily the exclusivity agreement, but the fact Jack Tretton promised us the ability to bring user-created PC mods into the console version of the game via the PlayStation Network. Homebrew is happening, little by little, and we're very happy about that.
Epic Games, Unreal Tournament 3 sign exclusivity deal with Sony originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Jul 2007 19:00:00 EST. At Sony's conference, all the buzz for today's news, Free Radical's upcoming shooter Haze was announced as a PS3 exclusive title, qualified with the phrase "this financial year." It's pretty obvious what that means and we're going to squash the rumors of complete exclusivity now, so that it doesn't get out of control and used against the, er, "Sony camp". It's only on the PS3 until the end of March 2008. That's a long time, considering its release is coming in a matter of months. Oddly, a trailer has yet to be slapped onto the PS Store, but you can always check the one above.

[Update: IGN interviewed Free Radical. We mean a lot. While we'd love to go over the 15 first party exclusives, you all know them already, we're sure. So, we're going to move along and debunk the most annoying rumor we've had to put up with for the past year. Metal Gear Solid 4 was announced as a PlayStation 3 exclusive during the conference, met with a loving nod by our favorite Hideo Kojima (we know about twenty, but this one is our favorite). Hopefully this dispels rumors completely. Set for an early 2008 simultaneous worldwide release, MGS4 has come along nicely and has a new trailer up on the PS Store, as you may know. Well, get ready to hear all the "timed exclusive" rumors now, which we're a little more ready to agree to. But not happy about.
Metal Gear Solid 4: PS3 exclusive, like it always was originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Jul 2007 18:30:00 EST. The title is technically inFAMOUS, but that'd be silly to type every time, so we'll type it like a normal word. Anyway, Infamous is a brand new title that came out of left field at Sony's E3 conference. Watch the trailer above if you missed it. It looks like someone took the idea behind City of Heroes/Villains and KOTOR and slapped the two together into a fantastic looking experience. We especially like the short scene near the end with the bridge and the lightning and the destruction. Check it out, leave your thoughts!
New PS3 title announced: Infamous originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Jul 2007 18:15:00 EST. NCsoft (along with Epic Games) signed a new agreement with Sony to develop some exclusive titles on the PS3. NCsoft, as you may know, brought us the titles Lineage, Guild Wars, and City of Heroes/Villains. Whether the exclusive new content will be these games transplanted onto the PS3 or something completely original, we're not sure, but this quote from NCsoft officials does give us ideas that it may be both: "created from both existing intellectual properties owned by NCsoft, as well as new IP." We're excited about this, since MMOs on the PS3 would be a fantastic addition. Stay tuned as we keep you updated on all the E3 news you'd ever want to hear!
NCsoft and Sony get all buddy-buddy on us originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Jul 2007 18:00:00 EST. It's Unreal Tournament 3 and fellow Xbox 360 fanboys we'll have to wait a little longer than our PS3 brothers to play. Sony and Epic Games just announced that UT3 will be a timed exclusive for the PS3 platform which will launch this November. But the wait will be short lived, because the game will be available on the Xbox 360 platform early 2008. But if you look at it from the angle of "price reduced $100," then it seems marginally more significant. We were thrilled about the PS3 price cut, but some of Sony's biggest devs are speaking out against it. Not so much against it, but they think it's not enough to make a difference. First was Konami, now we're getting a wag of the finger from Square Enix's European and North American subsidiaries president, John Yamamoto.

Yamamoto said "I think USD 500 for PS3 is still a bit expensive for most gamers. Most of them think that price is still high." In addition to that, he demanded a price cut for Europe as well. While we'd be all about that, the PS3 has only been launched there recently. Oh well, it might happen. Does this mean Final Fantasy XIII will go multiplatform? We doubt it. We're going to go ahead and detail them below, so enjoy.

One multiplayer mode will require you to seek out your opponent and eliminate him. How would you find him in such a big city? He's got to get his crime ranking thing up to seven stars, then he'll pop up on your radar. After that, seek him out and destroy him. Like the Terminator.

There are more modes to come, but that's all we were enlightened to for now. As for the single player mode, an in-game internet and cell phone will be integral to the game. Think ... Front Mission 3 with the pseudo-internet. You use the phone to order up more weapons, et cetera, so don't worry about running to a weapon shop while being chased. Call on the run! More details to come, we're sure.
GTAIV multiplayer details invoke feelings of friendship originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Jul 2007 20:30:00 EST. They think the price cut won't significantly increase sales of the PS3, which we feel differently about. This isn't coming from Kojima, who ultimately has control over the fate of Metal Gear Solid 4, but from Konami's North America and Europe boss, Kazumi Kitaue. He said "I don't expect a substantial impact... With USD 500, you can buy a personal computer." Oh, really? What would that computer be able to do? Word process and search the internet. S'about it.

This is the big quote people are jumping all over: "Since Metal Gear was born on the PlayStation, we would like to keep it a PlayStation game. But we might have to take some steps." What this means to us is exactly what we've predicted. Metal Gear Solid 4 is a timed exclusive if the game does not sell systems. We think it will, but we don't think it will be enough for Konami, so they'll release MGS4 on the 360 about a year later. Sucks for loyal Sony fans, but it's the most likely situation.
Konami may "take some steps" away from MGS4 exclusivity originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Jul 2007 13:00:00 EST. Oops, looks like we did, even if the words made no sense. All the links but one pertain to all the PS3 news relating to the price cut, but what a lot of our readers have wondered was whether or not the new 80GB PS3 will get rid of the Emotion Engine chip used for backwards compatibility. The answer is yes.

SCEA's Kimberly Otzman went on record earlier today, stating "The current 60 GB model utilizes a hardware and solution for backwards compatibility, namely the Emotion Engine chip. The new 80 GB PS3 will use a software solution for backwards compatibility, similar to that currently found in the PAL model." So there you have it. The Emotion Engine chip will be phased out around August, with the release of the new model. We don't know how to take this news -- give us your opinion.
Goodbye, Emotion Engine, you were quite useful originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Jul 2007 19:30:00 EST. A lot of folks may see a price drop this early indicative of a short console life, a desperate move, or the clever cutting of manufacturing costs to help consumers save money also. We like the latter, but the former two are what need addressing -- Tretton assures the world that the PS3 is set for a future-proof, 10 year life. He said Sony could have made a PS2.5 and taken a ride on the money train, but they opted not to. He takes a shot at the competition, saying "To be perfectly honest with you, I think that is a bit of what we are competing with." Or is he talking about the PS2 itself?

A few more choice statements from Tretton covered how the system doesn't need to convert everybody from day one. They can take their time selling consoles across ten years, he says. We guess this is since the price is an obstacle for many people right now, even with the price cut. Finally, Tretton assures us Sony has built "a machine that we firmly believe is future proof and is going to carry us for the next 10 years." We hope so and we can't wait for all the years ahead of us. We hardly know more than a handful of titles slated for 2008, let alone 2010.

[via CVG]
Tretton reaffirms the 10 year life-cycle of PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Jul 2007 14:30:00 EST. Let's move away from all the juicy new info and give you a preview of a game we're still in the air about. Some may dislike it, but the loyal fanbase of the original Mercenaries title are ready for more and we've got some hands-on impressions from IGN to keep you worked up. Let's make a list.

Everything is destructible, so set those trees on fire and watch the blaze spread. The fire is claimed to be the best-looking thing in the early build of the game. So either it looks really good or the game looks kinda bland.

Did we mention everything is destructible? Every building, vehicle, other person, whatever -- all can meet their doom thanks to you.

There are thirty weapons in Mercs 2 and over 200 vehicles. The fun lies in the vehicles, though. You won't necessarily have to pull a Grand Theft Auto and take a 20 minute jog to get the perfect vehicle, though. As you kick ass, you earn cash. This cash can be traded in for special weapons, attacks (air strikes), or vehicles to be delivered on the spot. Want a Wave Runner on that small lake? You got it!

Stealing a tank from an enemy involves a more God of War inspired button-pressing sequence, whereas other vehicles will only require one press of the action button to oust whoever else happened to be driving it.

There are a lot more impressions about the actual level played in the hands-on treatment, but we'd like to leave that up to you to read. It's pretty entertaining and we're moderately jealous. The game seems to be shaping up nice, but since we haven't heard how their online service will work, we've got our reservations until we see that in action.
Mercenaries 2 lets you destroy just about anything originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Jul 2007 13:00:00 EST. The red light is not indicative of a redesigned controller.]

Let's keep the wave of slightly related news going. With the announcement of the 80GB PS3 and the price drop of the current model, everybody looked over a detail that may be important. Then again, it may be nothing at all. Over at PSU, the writers thought it worthwhile to point out that on the box for the 80GB PS3, the included controller was lit up all red in the circle we know as either the Home button, PS button, or clear button where the "Analog" button used to be. Why is it red? They feel it's because the controller is actually the new Rumblaxis controller (though we just made up the name).

This doesn't sound too far-fetched. Why else would they delay the new SKU until August, if not to wait until they can toss the new controller into the box? While it was just a picture with a lit-up button, we're going to nod along with PSU on this one and say that yes, in fact, the 80GB PS3 launching in August will come with the new rumbling Sixaxis controller.

[Thanks, Justin!]
Fun speculation: 80GB PS3 to come with rumble Sixaxis? originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Jul 2007 11:45:00 EST. Variety magazine, a mainstay daily trade for folks in the entertainment business, has an article out about the scaled-down E3 and what it'll mean to the gaming industry this year. Basically it's a summary of everything you probably already knew about this year's E3, but it shows how all eyes will be turning towards the show this week, just as if it was E3 as usual. They cover the now-confirmed PS3 price cut rumor and speculate that Microsoft will most likely follow suit, or will possibly improve what's in the box, like maybe bundling that HD-DVD player finally?

They also mention the biggies that will hopefully be shown off for the majors, including Killzone 2 for the PS3, Mass Effect for the 360, and Super Smash Bros. for the Wii. We're certainly hoping there will be more than three games at E3 this year, and if you could see our E3 appointment calendar for this week, you'd think we might be wishing there were only three. There's going to be a boatload of information later this week, so be sure to stay tuned.

We love how they say Nintendo basically doesn't have to do anything at E3, other than mention some game dates. Even Nintendo's George Harrison says "Nintendo goes as its own pace. It always does things its own way." As Fleetwood Mac would say, you can go your own way ... but you'd better be giving us some Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros. dates when you do.
Variety reports on E3, "The industry's biggest event" originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Jul 2007 08:01:00 EST. This week, we want to ask all our readers what they think, hardware-wise, Sony is most likely not to unveil at E3. That is, what announcement will they keep up their sleeves to steal the show at the Tokyo Game Show? We've got a few ideas and you're going to vote on them!

We appreciate your votes and are completely aware there could be something else lurking in the shadows from Sony regarding the PS3. These are fairly common and popular hearsay, though, so we'll stick to these options. If you have a better idea, stick it in the comments section. That's how the cars in Burnout Paradise are being described. Their engines are loud, their paint is shiny, their speed is ferocious! Basically, the cars are pretty badass. Built from the ground up instead of using an existing engine, Criterion's Burnout Paradise has a lot going for it. The neatest feature is the damage physics. Ramming a pole at extremely high speeds will result in car-wrapping goodness, with details mirroring all those old crash test dummy videos. Sometimes, if you're especially violent in your wipeout, you can crack your vehicle right in half.

Online racing is incredibly simple and incredibly seamless. Invite a buddy to race and when the person accepts, the race begins. No menus apparently. No waiting. This was demoed on the PS3 version, so we know we'll be getting this seamless feature. Chances are, the 360 build will get the same thing. The point is this: we're not getting shafted this time.

Every street has "race rules" across the 30 square mile city, so again you won't be bothered by pop-up menus or interrupting boxes of text to tell you the rules. It's hard to imagine how they'll do this, since it's nearly unprecedented, but it sounds lovely. There's a lot more to this game than meets the eye (no, they don't transform), with tune-up shops, crash mode, freeburn and more. Check out the rest of the preview if you're curious. Now sporting the subtitle Biolith Rebellion, the set comes with the PS-Eye, stand, card mat and starter deck all in addition to the game itself. While you might be thinking "wow, that's a lot of stuff ... it's probably really expensive," you'd be surprised to learn that the cost for all of this is only around 10,000 yen. If you translate that into US dollars, it's around $80. Around there. We think it's a great deal, especially for the innovative technology you'll be investing in!

[via PS3Forums]
Eye of Judgment set looks uber-nerdy, uber-awesome originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 08 Jul 2007 13:45:00 EST.
