It features a largely similar setup to its predecessor, the DualShock 3 - save for that front touchpad, light bar on top of the controller, redesigned analog sticks and the fact that it has no start button.

Sony also sent over shots of its new PS4 Eye peripheral, a log-like improvement over the single-lensed PlayStation Eye camera that currently exists on PS3. The PS4 Eye has two cameras built in that can gauge player distance from the television and the like.

Gallery: Dual Shock 4 and Eye camera (PlayStation 4)

Take a closer look at the DualShock 4 and PS4 Eye originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Feb 2013 23:06:00 EST. The patent in question was filed by Dr. Richard Marks, the inventor of the PS Eye and PlayStation Move, back in October.

The filing calls for "a real-time three-dimensional interactive environment using a depth sensing device" that players would move in front of and interact with. "Embodiments of the present invention provide real-time interactive gaming experiences for users. For example, users can interact with various computer-generated objects in real-time." That sounds awfully close to Kinect, doesn't it?

Another patent suggests Sony is also considering a separate set of hardware that would allow for better backwards compatibility. Rather than provide an on-board solution, this would plug into your game console and provide the hardware needed to properly run an older game. (Sound familiar?) Patents are quite a few steps removed from reality, but they might just give us a glimpse at how we might play our games in the future, whether they're new or old.
Sony patents filed for Kinect-like PS Eye camera, backwards compatibility adapter originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 Feb 2012 22:30:00 EST. If you're thinking about picking up a PlayStation Move controller with which to bust caps in the bottoms of your foes in SOCOM 4, Sony and Zipper Interactive have announced a pretty tight little bundle to fit your needs. It's the SOCOM 4 Full Deployment Edition, a $149.99 package which includes the game, a Move controller and Navigation controller, the "Sharp Shooter" gun attachment and a PlayStation Eye camera. The bundle will arrive on store shelves on the same day as the standalone game, April 19.

That's a pretty sweet deal -- all those components sold piecemeal would run you over $200. More importantly, think about all the time you'll save if you purchase them altogether! Seriously, searching for these items and clicking "Add to Cart" five times would take you, like, three whole minutes. Three minutes! In this fast-paced, interconnected world, that's like, seven minutes.
SOCOM 4 bundled with Move in $150 'Full Deployment Edition' originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 Feb 2011 13:00:00 EST. Tired of kicking various random things (the trashcan, pieces of furniture, garden gnomes) around your house? Waiting for the day when all that kicking can finally be put to use winning a game? You don't have to wait much longer -- Sony has announced that Kung-Fu Live will available in the US on December 7, so, in a bit less than two weeks from now, you'll be able to drop your real-life limbs on some virtual baddies.

There's also a new trailer, embedded after the break for your convenience. Sony recommends that you empty out about seven by nine feet of space to stand in front of the PlayStation Eye camera and do all your moving around, so it looks like you might be able to put those furniture-kickin' skills to use early after all. Hi-ya! Oh geez, sorry kitty, didn't see you there.
Continue reading Kung-Fu Live punches into the US on December 7

Kung-Fu Live punches into the US on December 7 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 25 Nov 2010 01:00:00 EST. Kung-Fu Live made quite the impression when I saw it a few months ago, promising a full body-controlled gaming experience -- using Sony's PlayStation Eye instead of Microsoft's much-hyped Kinect.

As with Kinect, you'll need a lot of space in order to play comfortably. The developer tells us that you should "ideally have about 7x9 feet of space." The camera needs to be able to see your entire body, from head to toe. You'll also need some bright lighting, and you'll have to watch what you wear. For example, wearing a white shirt against a white wall will confuse the game. (Hence the jacket in the picture above.)

Gallery: Kung Fu LIVE! Do you feel the inexplicable compulsion to map the contours of your grotesque visage on a professional level? MakerBot Industries has come up with a clever device that should let you do so using a gaming peripheral you might already own: The PlayStation Eye.

The MakerScanner (which isn't available for purchase yet, though interested parties can put their names on a mailing list) is designed to let users create a full 3D geometric scan of an object using the PS Eye and a laser line pointer. This results in a data map that can be used to create 3D models or, with the right -- presumably expensive -- equipment, a physical statuette. Four years after the arrival of Wii, Sony's take on motion controlled gaming is finally here. Well, at least it's here at Joystiq, where we got our hands on the final hardware and initial lineup of games a couple of weeks in advance of the peripheral's September 19 North American debut.

I spent several days with Move, from the initial unboxing to putting my thoughts on the hardware together for you in this review. I also played the Move launch games from Sony and one from Ubisoft, which I've reviewed in the companion piece to this article.

PlayStation Move, as you've no doubt read on the site, comes in a variety of configurations. There's the Move controller itself, the Move controller bundled with the required PlayStation Eye camera and Sports Champions and a system bundle that includes the latter plus a PS3 console. There's also the Move's "nunchuk" Navigation Controller, which isn't actually used by any of the Move-specific launch titles (but will be supported by future games and current titles, such as Heavy Rain, via patches).

I received two Move controllers, one Navigation Controller and a PS Eye camera. The Navigation Controller arrived in packaging styled to match other PS3 accessories, such as the DualShock 3. The Move controllers themselves were already unboxed, though it stands to reason that they come in similarly difficult-to-open-without-spilling-blood plastic packaging.

Anyway, enough background -- let's get on with the review.
Continue reading PlayStation Move review: The hardware and experience

PlayStation Move review: The hardware and experience originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 Sep 2010 03:02:00 EST. In a lengthy PlayStation Blog post accompanying the trailer, Virtual Air Guitar Company's Teemu revealed a weird multiplayer feature, in which up to four players can use PlayStation controllers to fight against the player using the camera, presumably with the unstated goal of making him or her pass out from exhaustion.
Continue reading New Kung-Fu Live trailer fights for your attention

New Kung-Fu Live trailer fights for your attention originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Jul 2010 02:45:00 EST. While Eye of Judgment never became a runaway hit for Sony, the PlayStation Eye-enabled, augmented reality card game has a small, but dedicated fan base. Unfortunately for them, the online community will be discontinued on September 30, according to a notice on the European PlayStation forums. "Offline play will remain available even after the conclusion of online service," the announcement adds, meaning EoJ fans will have to meet in person to continue competitively playing.

While it's not uncommon for online games to be discontinued, it does leave fans with few options. Some EoJ players are planning to move on to the PSP version, Legends (which doesn't require physical cards). Others, however, feel betrayed by Sony. "I am afraid that my long lasting relationship with SCEA/E/J products end 9/30," one fan commented on the forums.
Eye of Judgment online servers closing in September originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 02 Jul 2010 14:00:00 EST. With the aid of a camera, your image is placed directly into the game, and real movements are translated into in-game actions. As the concept trailer above shows, you'll be able to kick and punch wildly into the air to take down virtual baddies. But Kung-Fu Live isn't destined for Project Natal. Instead, it's coming exclusively to the PlayStation Network. You won't need a fancy PlayStation Move controller, either. This is one of the few games designed exclusively for the PlayStation Eye camera.

Powering the gameplay experience is Virtual Air Guitar Company's FreeMotion technology, which promises "real-time tracking of the entire human body as well as background removal using regular webcams." Certainly, the promise of Natal-esque gameplay using a standard camera has us intrigued, but is it better than your typical PS2 EyeToy game?

It's clear that the technology powering Kung-Fu Live is far more powerful than what we've seen in the PS2 generation. The system is able to accurately remove the background in real-time -- and is intelligent enough to know when new players jump in or out. Another aspect that benefits Kung-Fu Live: personality. The game is story-driven, told through comic panels in which you can feature. At the start of each level the game will suggest a pose for you to attempt, after which the camera will take a picture and inject you into a comic book scene. Seeing myself roundhouse kick three goons in a generated comic book strip was definitely amusing. (Being able to share these photos online seems like an ideal way to use the game's built-in Facebook functionality, as well.)

Hands-on: PlayStation Eye's Kung-Fu Live originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 May 2010 11:37:00 EST. We were starting to worry that SCEA had forgotten about EyePet when its planned holiday 2009 release came and went. Sony's Eye-enabled virtual pet simulator made a surprising reemergence recently, now featuring PlayStation Move support. We chatted with EyePet producer Nicolas Doucet about implementing Sony's motion controller into the game, and what that means for gamers, new and old.

By removing the Magic Card, and replacing it with motion controls, isn't this new version of EyePet, essentially, a brand new game?

Especially for North America and Japan, as well. It's going to be the first release, so yeah it's a brand new game. We've really made a lot of effort to make sure that whatever we converted from the Magic Card for the Move wasn't just a port. We deconstructed and reconstructed things to really make it feel like a Move-dedicated game. Obviously, to begin with it wasn't. We put a lot of effort into that. We've extended the development by another nine months to really give something special to players.

Will it be a PlayStation Move launch title?

Yes it will be, this Fall.
Speaking to CVG, MotoGP lead designer Greg Bryant discussed the future of the series on both the Xbox 360 and PS3. Bryant said the development team plans to incorporate Natal support into MotoGP 10/11 in order to implement head tracking. According to Bryant, "the future for [Natal] is through head tracking in racing games." As for future iterations on the PS3, he noted that the team plans to use stereoscopic 3D and "theoretically" enable head tracking with the Playstation Eye.
Here's some encouraging news for those hoping that the PlayStation Motion Controller (pleaseannouncethenamealready!) will give a reason to knock the dust off your old PlayStation Eye. According to a Nikkei report spotted by Andriasang, the device, which pairs with the Eye, will have "around 10 or so games" by year's end, including sports and pet raising titles.

We've been disappointed by the game support for the Eye so far, outside of the ability to construct extensive scrotum-centric LBP sticker libraries. Here's hoping that these promised releases can take all the Eyes sitting on our shelves from novelty to necessity.
Report: PlayStation Motion Controller to have about 10 games this year originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Jan 2010 16:31:00 EST. "EyePet is now out of holiday," a SCEA representative told us rather succinctly, confirming an initial report from Gamervision. The PlayStation Eye-enabled virtual pet has been stealthily pushed out from its planned November release into the increasingly crowded waters of 2010. SCEA explains that its marketing team "will spend additional time to continue educating consumers and retail channels, setting the table for a successful product launch." Essentially, not enough people are excited about EyePet yet for it to warrant a holiday release.

Initial plans had EyePet releasing in two varieties: alone; and bundled with the camera. However, considering another big Sony product -- also coming in early 2010 -- requires use of the Eye, Sony may pursue a completely different marketing plan altogether.
EyePet won't see a holiday release in the US originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Oct 2009 09:15:00 EST. Just watch the interview.

Selected excerpts below:

Joystiq: Are there any plans to bring Gran Turismo PSP's "Party Mode" to GT5?

Yamauchi: I'm glad you noticed that. What we really worked hard to make the PSP portable fun and interesting is in those types of details. Obviously, these are ideas we worked hard on and they will be carried over in some form into GT5.

In Gran Turismo, with its ten years of history, the people that who good at playing the game are really, really good at playing the game. Of course, there are a lot of first-time players that want to get into the game, and it was a major theme for us to develop the game so it would be easier for them to get into it. With the party races and these game modes we've developed for the PSP, we've come to one solution for that aspect.
Continue reading TGS 2009: Interview: Gran Turismo 5's Kazunori Yamauchi

TGS 2009: Interview: Gran Turismo 5's Kazunori Yamauchi originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 28 Sep 2009 12:19:00 EST. When people ask us why humanity is the best species hands down, we always like to point to stuff like the video below the break. It's because we can invent an amazing technology like Sony's Vision Library, which recognizes faces via the PlayStation Eye and then presents them with digital alterations in a sort of augmented reality. And what's one of the first things we do with this incredible technology? That's right: We put duck bills on people. Naturally.

Finally, we can attach a date to the exact moment kids across the world can stop begging for real-life, responsibility-mandating pets, and can instead fall in love with their virtual, responsibility-free counterparts. That is to say, we know the release date for Sony's EyePet -- it's set to drop November 17 in the States. If you've got a PlayStation Eye already, you can pick up the core game for $39.99 -- though an Eye-equipped bundle is also coming for $59.99.

For a quick breakdown of what EyePet is all about, check out the recent PlayStation.Blog video posted after the break. Here's a quick summary: It's like Seaman, only way less creepy, and with a Monkey-esque thing instead of a Man-Fish, and also the Monkey-thing will never learn to speak and question you about your sex life. We hope.
Continue reading EyePet making your coffee table more adorable Nov. 17

EyePet making your coffee table more adorable Nov. 17 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 29 Aug 2009 13:30:00 EST. Those looking to introduce a pet into the household without worrying about all the feeding, grooming, and post-pee castigation will be pleased to hear that Sony has announced a European bundle deal for its inescapably adorable EyePet game. While the company has confirmed that the camera-enabled carefest will arrive in North America this year, it has yet to establish a price for that region. EyePet will launch for €49.99 (roughly $70), camera included, in Europe this holiday.

We'll let you know as soon as we hear more or if we somehow manage to use the phrase "post-pee castigation" ever again.

Update: Retailers are currently accepting pre-orders for the standalone game (sans PlayStation Eye camera), with a UK price set at £19.99.
EyePet bundled with camera for 50 euros originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 Aug 2009 14:30:00 EST. Doctor Richard Marks, known among gamers as the PhD behind the EyeToy, discussed the evolution of the Playstation motion controller technology -- revealed by Sony during E3 2009 -- with PC World. Marks said that experience with the EyeToy, along with other data, showed Sony that, while gamers did have fun experiences with the physical movement of the original peripheral, they still desired the precision and complete control in a fast, effective way. Upon this realization, Sony opted to leave the concept of control-free gaming behind and advanced to the dual-wand prototype showcased at E3 2009. "We designed our new control system to accomplish all of this. We believe the path we have chosen is an ideal combination of both spatial and action/button input," Marks told PC World.

When prodded about comments made by Shigeru Miyamoto, who said he was "flattered" by Sony and Microsoft's motion-control direction, Marks respectfully agreed that -- while the EyeToy predates Nintendo's new console -- the Ninendo Wii was an important advancement that "broadened the gaming market and enabled new experiences." As for camera-only control, Marks says the tech can work but it's difficult to resonate with players who get more gratification out of using a tactile device. Attempts to uncover release details or the price-point of PlayStation's yet-to-be officially named motion controllers proved futile, but Marks promises the device to hit stores by Spring 2010.
Doc Marks discusses evolution of the PlayStation motion controller originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 31 Jul 2009 23:15:00 EST. Sony has confirmed to us at a holiday showcase event in New York City tonight that the PlayStation Eye game, EyePet, will definitely be heading to the US in time for the holidays. Our roving reporter, Andrew Yoon, says that the game will be available standalone as well as bundled with the PlayStation Eye camera.

Previously, the game was only announced for a European release after it was first revealed at Leipzig GC last year. We're happy to see the adorable simian-dog-thing will be making the jump across the Atlantic and won't be suffering from the chronic case of Q1-2010 flu that's making the rounds.

Interacting with games without using a controller is apparently a really big deal. Microsoft's got its "Project Natal" thing and Sony has its magic motion wand. Oh, wait. That's technically a controller. That you hold. Fear not, as, during the Develop Conference going on right now in the UK, Sony has revealed that the existing PlayStation Eye camera can recognize you -- well, specifically your face -- and track your skeletal movement without getting all touchy-feely.

SCEE says that it already has libraries available for developers who want to integrate the technology into their games. Develop magazine's site quotes developer relations head, Kish Hirani, who divulged that the software was developed by SCEE R&D along with outside developers.

While attending the conference, we also learned that it's capable of making out the movement of individual digits -- fancy-talk for fingers -- along with those of your facial bones. Sony has not commented on whether certain hand gestures will be edited out by the software. (Nothing can edit what you'll find after the break from your mind.)

We'd be lying if we didn't say we're a bit worried about the future of gaming controllers. Between the Nintendo's MotionPlus, Microsoft's Project Natal and Sony's ... erm ... motion thing, our precious game pads get more and more antique looking every day. And according to a recent patent filed by Sony that Siliconera found, our precious controllers have one more thing to fear: everyday objects.

That's right, friends -- in the future, we could be using our real-life keys to open doors, our swords to slice up fools, and our guns (not outside of the US) to shoot up the screen "accidentally." The patent shows off a PlayStation Eye-based system that can recognize 3D objects and use them in-game based on various actions taken by the player -- something Microsoft claims it's Natal is also capable of doing. Various household items will be affected in different ways, the example given being a U-shaped object that, when turned upwards, becomes a sword, versus a U-shaped block when facing downwards (think Halo's Covenant Energy Sword). Apparently the system is able to scan a whole mess of objects and store them in a databank for future use. Like so much future tech we've seen recently, we're taking this one with a full truckload of salt until we get some face time.
Sony patents more motion tech, uses everyday objects originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 03 Jul 2009 17:30:00 EST. We regret to inform you, however, that said information does not include a) the real name of the thing, or b) the real shape.

The device will include rumble motors for force feedback, and four of the wands can be tracked simultaneously by the PlayStation Eye camera. Motion-controlled games will also be able to take advantage of face tracking and head tracking. Sony is also investigating the possibility of combining wand and PS3 controller use, with the example of the wand as a sword and the DualShock 3 as a shield.

Wand-controlled games can also use the PlayStation Eye's microphone for voice recognition and voice control. However, all this wizardry comes at a cost: Sony told developers that the "motion-tracking library has some SPU overhead and has an impact on memory as well, although these will be minimized."
Sony briefs devs on PlayStation Motion Controller originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 22 Jun 2009 09:45:00 EST.
Sony's motion-controller technology for PS3 isn't new; in fact, it dates back to the dawn of the PS2's EyeToy. Well before PS3 was ever announced, Dr. Richard Marks, EyeToy / PlayStation Eye creator, was demoing gesture-based, motion-tracking gameplay on PS2 -- using a colored ball and a camera. Sound familiar?

In the video after the break, you can watch Marks using a "wand" topped with a brightly-hued sphere to draw symbols in the air, which are translated into in-game spells -- the effects of which match the movement of the ball. It's very simple -- there's no tracking of depth and it's definitely not 1:1 by any stretch of the imagination -- but it's still interesting to see how far the idea has come since last-gen.

Who knows what improvements can (or will) be made before the PlayStation Motion Controller is supposed to launch in 2010? It's real, folks. We first learned of EyePet over a year ago, and approached it with both excitement and skepticism. When we had a chance to see EyePet running on PS3 live, we were blown away at how what we originally thought was a concept video had been completely real all along.

For those not in the know, EyePet is a virtual pet simulator that takes advantage of the PlayStation Eye. With the addition of a "magic card," players will be able to play with a virtual monkey that lives in augmented reality. The television will display what the PlayStation Eye sees: you, and your body. Your on-screen pet will then be able to respond to all your actions. You'll be able to virtually pet the creature on the head, grab a bowl of food and feed it, and play a variety of mini-games. The tactile sensation of owning a pet will be gone, but in its stead will be an unworldly adorable creature that uses tech that feels like it's from the future.

Perhaps it's best summed up with video, as EyePet truly needs to be seen to be understood. You can do so many things with the critter, and his incredibly detailed and lifelike animation makes this "game" all the more believable. For example, you can try sweeping your arm across the bottom of your TV view, and the pet will jump over your arm. When your pet goes to sleep, you can clap loudly and get it to wake up ... (although it might be grumpy!)

Gallery: EyePet

Impressions: EyePet (PS3) originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 04 Jun 2009 08:30:00 EST. With the exception of LittleBigPlanet and The Eye of Judgment, there hasn't been much reason to dust off the Eye. Well, put it to work! Get the camera off its lazy butt and have it become a fully functional PC webcam. The PlayStation Eye is looking to get its own minigame compilation, much like the EyeToy's EyeToy Play launch title, if Curve Studio's website is to be believed. On the list of games the developer has made, it shows a title named Play Factory which includes "six individual games developed for the PlayStation Eye." There's no indication on when it's due out, or what sort of games we can expect to find on the disc, but it's nice to know that with this and EyePet Sony isn't just ignoring the PlayStation Eye. Hopefully we'll see something a little more advanced than the downloadable interactive screensavers we've seen so far.

'Play Factory' found on Curve Studios website originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Aug 2008 17:30:00 EST.
Our biggest problem with Sony's AIBO robotic dog was that, well ... it wasn't fake enough! Though it wasn't able to soil the floor, you could still touch it or (perish the thought!) pick it up. So it's with great interest that we bring you news of EyePet, a "responsive virtual pet who reacts to your every move" brought to you by our friends at SCEE. All you need is a PlayStation Eye camera, a PlayStation 3, and the ability to love.

"EyePet gives you all the lovable benefits and interaction of a real-life pet without tearing up your sofa or making a mess on the rug," says the totally understated press release. With a late 2009 release date, that gives you just enough time to forget all about that real miniature monkey thing you had when you were a kid. Video footage of your new best friend can be found after the break.

Gallery: EyePet

Continue reading PlayStation Eye + EyePet = Who needs real pets?

PlayStation Eye + EyePet = Who needs real pets? originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 18:15:00 EST.
Do you love puppies and kittens? How about virtual puppies and kitties? If you do you, you might enjoy the new Eyepet game that's just been announced. Check it out in the video above.

It's a virtual pet game that allows gamers to interact with their pet by utilizing the PlayStation Eye peripheral. If you put an object in front of the PS Eye, the pet will interact with it on screen. If you wave your fingers in front of the PS Eye, you can tickle your "loveable, simian-like pet." Eyepet is developed by SCEE and will be available in "late 2009" for PAL regions.

New PlayStation Eye game announced: Eyepet originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 12:05:00 EST. Famitsu is reporting that the PlayStation Eye will soon be heading to Japan. The peripheral is currently only available in a bundle with Eye of Judgment, but come July 24th this new software bundle will be unleashed within the region. The bundle, which will cost 5000 yen, will include the PlayStation Eye camera as well as a blu-ray disc containing a collection of mini games and interactive screensavers.

Before you start filling up with envy, know this: these games are all currently available on the US and EU PSN Store. Once again we are seeing Japan's bizarre dislike of downloadable gaming resulting in a boxed release of games that elsewhere in the world are only available to download. If that's the way they'd rather do it, who are we to argue?
PS Eye coming to Japan with software bundle originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 04 Jun 2008 19:30:00 EST. Sorry, Johnny. It seems like Ubisoft Shanghai might have beaten you to the punch with gesture controls in video games. According to Eurogamer, the team has integrated gesture-activated commands into the RTS Tom Clancy's EndWar.

Using the Playstation Eye, the PS3 version of the game will allow players to wave their hands underneath the camera to navigate the game's overhead map. The feature is currently only being developed for the PS3 version, as the 360's Vision Camera lacks the stand to hold the camera vertically.

Of course, like head tracking in Boom Blox, this somewhat ancillary feature might not make the final cut of the game. We'll keep our fingers crossed (and moving in a counter-clockwise circle, which is how our own fancy gesture control system knows we're being sincere).
PS3 EndWar gets Minority Report-esque gesture controls originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 May 2008 17:00:00 EST. At these places, they usually had an area in the arcade that had "virtual reality" rings, where they slapped gloves and a big helmet on players willing to spend the big money so they could "virtually" move around in their own 3D world. It looked really ugly, too. Well, Sony has come up with a way for you to experience a 3D world without sticking anything on your body at all -- except recommending that you keep your head attached.

With the PlayStation Eye, Sony has unveiled the ability to map your head movements in 3D. For example, if you want to look around a corner in a first-person shooter, with this technology you would simply crane your neck around the corner like you really would. And the Eye would catch this and the game would react accordingly. It's neat. Watch the video. End of line.

[via CVG]
Sony displays some fancy new motion sensing technology originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 Feb 2008 17:30:00 EST. That's right, no crazy hardware configurations devised by third parties (e.g. Johnny Lee, Electronic Arts), just software that identifies your head and its movement.

A representative said the head tracking software has not been announced for any titles, but we'd love to see it show up soon for pretty much any genre of game. Video embedded after the break. (Note: It doesn't work for users with Canada, Japan or U.K. IPs.) While you're at it, (re)watch Lee's video to get a better idea of the potential of head tracking software (also embedded after the break).
Continue reading PS3 head tracking only needs camera

PS3 head tracking only needs camera originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Feb 2008 20:30:00 EST. If you've yearned to have your PlayStation 3's electronic retina do something other than judge rectangular pieces of paper, today presents two new opportunities via the PlayStation Network store. The first, Operation: Creature Feature, has you herding little monsters through mazes, guiding them with the motion of your hands. The $4.99 investment might just help you defeat the habit of shaking your fist in the air whenever you feel frustrated -- every time you do that, you might inadvertently kill even more of the poor little things.

If killing poor little things of the aquatic variety is also one of your neglectful habits, you'd best stick to the virtual fish in Aquatopia. Sure, it's a glorified $1.99 screensaver, but if you skipped Ratchet & Clank and Uncharted, it's probably the least fishy thing you'll have running on your PS3. It also explains the rather curious pile of Fish Flakes on top of James Ransom-Wiley's TV.

[Via PS3 Fanboy]
Two PlayStation Eye titles hit American PSN today originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 Nov 2007 18:59:00 EST. A new post on the PlayStation.Blog details two PlayStation Eye "games" that are finally on their way to the American PSN Store. Operation Creature Feature and Aqua Vita have been available on the EU Store for a couple of weeks now, but later today they'll be available to download from the American store too.

Operation Creature Feature will sell for $4.99 and the interactive screensaver Aqua Vita will cost only $1.99. The former is definitely worth a punt, especially for the cost, but Aqua Vita can probably be left unless you're a huge fan of digital fish. No doubt more PS Eye games will be put up in the coming weeks and today's update should also include some other content. We'll let you know what's available once we've found out.
Two PlayStation Eye games available on the PSN Store later today originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 Nov 2007 14:30:00 EST. Long ago, cynicism hardened the hearts of the Joystiq staff to lumps of coal (or in Ludwig's case, a conflict diamond), so it's hard for us to get too excited about anything. That said, we're almost certain we feel a few cracks in our ticker when we watch these videos of Sony R&D using the PlayStation Eye to customize games.

In one video, a staffer draws a spaceship and a planet surface on a sheet of paper then the PS3 generates an impromptu game of Lunar Lander with them on the fly. In another, a Combat-esque game is interrupted when another player wants to scan his own hand-drawn tank into the game. This is all just research at this point rather than an actual product, but it's hard not to be excited about the possibilities. (Little Big Planet object creation? Dare we dream?)
See PlayStation Eye used to customize games originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 15 Nov 2007 08:45:00 EST.
The latest update to the Official PlayStation.blog is one of the best updates we've seen so far. The videos on display showcase some the truly incredible potential of the PlayStation Eye, where drawings come to life in video games. These are simply concepts, and aren't indicative of any games in development ... but we're excited nonetheless. Being able to transform your army men toys (pictured above) into playable characters on the television is certainly a fun way of merging the real world and the virtual one.

It really is like jacking into the Matrix, Kaz! Thanks.

PlayStation Eye team experimenting with new ideas originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Nov 2007 16:45:00 EST. While they may not be available on the US PlayStation Store, a number of PlayStation Eye games have been up on the EU store for a wee while now. A member of the PS3Forums community, Kungfuruss, has recorded a number of video reviews to let you know whether they are worthy of a download or not. All of these reviews are available on his YouTube account.

Be sure to check them out if you're still on the fence about downloading the £1.99 titles. Or if you're not in the European territories, then be sure to watch them to see what you're missing. No doubt Kungfuruss will continue to record more video reviews as more PSN titles come out - we'll be keeping our eyes out for them.

Kungfuruss reviews PlayStation Eye games on YouTube originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 Nov 2007 15:00:00 EST.
The first round of PlayStation Eye titles already put everything on the EyeToy to shame; it's not even a contest. To prove that, check out this new compilation video, which showcases, not only the graphical power of the PS3, but also the potential of the PlayStation Eye.

Europeans who own a PS Eye can already experience Tori Emaki and Mesmerize as they were just released yesterday on the PlayStation Network. Don't worry, though, fellow Americans, our time will come.

See the promise of PS Eye software originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 02 Nov 2007 16:15:00 EST. The PlayStation Eye is almost here. The Eye of Judgment will be available in Europe and America next week - make sure you check back later this week for our pre-release impressions - and the Eye will be available in the box. If, however, you don't fancy the potentially excellent collectible card video game then the PlayStation Eye will be available on its lonesome on November the 7th. For £24.99 you get the camera itself along with a disc containing EyeCreate (Eye of Judgment purchasers will be able to download EyeCreate for free from the PSN Store).

More content for the PlayStation Eye is also being made available this month, with Operation Creature Feature, Trials of Topoq and Aqua Vita being made available sometime within the next two weeks. Add in the ability to video chat with other PS3 users, that's a ridiculously low price for an already decent amount of content.
PlayStation Eye dated and priced for the UK originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 Oct 2007 13:55:00 EST.
