Sony has just announced here at E3 that it will be offering a PlayStation 3 console bundled up with a copy of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/grand-theft-auto-5"><em>Grand Theft Auto 5</em></a>, along with a specially-branded headset, for $299. The bundle will be available with the game itself right away on September 17.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/10/sony-offering-gta5-ps3-bundle-with-branded-headset/">Sony offering GTA5 PS3 bundle, with branded headset</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 10 Jun 2013 21:37:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">In his latest advisory note to investors, Wedbush Morgan prognosticator and analyst Michael Pachter goes on record with his belief that we'll see "another price cut for both systems some time this year (around summer)," noting in the email that "because its manufacturing costs are lower, Microsoft has the ability to lower price as early as March or April." <br />
<br />
In lieu of a price cut on Microsoft's part so soon, Pachter feels that the company may instead introduce "a more feature-packed Xbox 360 in early 2010 (likely <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/16/no-plans-for-250gb-xbox-drive-outside-modern-warfare-2-bundle-m/">with a 250GB hard drive</a>) at the same $299 price point." The great seer believes that Microsoft will only drop the price on its console before summer "if it begins to lose significant market share to Sony," adding that he anticipates<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/18/its-official-playstation-3-price-drops-to-299/"> last fall's price cut</a> on PS3 will continue to help Sony gain ground on Microsoft. <br />
<br />
On the portable front, Pachter doesn't expect <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psp-go">PSP Go</a> (remember that?) to make much headway this year unless Sony prices it "more reasonably," and says that the biggest challenge facing Nintendo DS is "its own high installed base," stating that he anticipates sales of the handheld to steadily decline in 2010. Good thing Nintendo's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/06/nintendo-ds2-to-feature-movement-sensor-new-wii-zelda-2010/">started talking about</a> a "DS2," huh?</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/12/pachter-more-console-price-cuts-coming-by-summer/">Pachter: More console price cuts coming by summer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 Jan 2010 20:00:00 EST. According to Janco analyst Mike Hickey, Sony could be set to <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/ps3-price-cut-announcement-in-the-next-couple-of-days-janco">announce a new, lower price point</a> for the <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/tag/@ps3">PS3</a> in the next few days. He says Sony needs to slash $100 off the price of the console to "effectively restart unit velocity at retail." He sees this cut taking effect in "April or by June at the latest." Without the cut, he predicts PS3 sales will continue to steadily decline.<br /><br />There's also speculation regarding a potential Blu-ray-less PS3, which would "enable them to make the aforementioned hardware price reduction," though that sounds kind of ridiculous. Without all of that Blu-ray goodness, how are you supposed to play any software on the thing? It's not like people will go running out to buy a cheaper PS3 that will only play PS2, PSOne and PSN games, after all.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://tech.yahoo.com/news/pcworld/20090225/tc_pcworld/playstation3pricedropfinallyintheoffing">Yahoo Tech</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/25/analyst-ps3-price-cut-could-happen-very-soon/">Analyst: PS3 price cut could happen very soon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 Feb 2009 11:03:00 EST. That latest <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/littlebigplanet"><em>LittleBigPlanet</em></a> patch? It's not Edam. You'll understand what that means in a second. The patch updates the game to version 1.08 and adds two new costumes, completely free of charge. These traditional Chinese outfits are to celebrate the Chinese New Year and, as you can see, are totally adorable. Aww!<br /><br />There are more patches coming soon, according to a <a href="http://www.mediamolecule.com/2009/01/22/more-cheese/">separate post</a> on the official Media Molecule blog. Next up is Edam, which fixes a number of the game's LittleBigBugs (for the full list, check out the blog post). It's currently in testing and should be released in mid-February, with Cornish Yarg following shortly. The latter is said to contain "many fabulous things, most excitingly new creative abilities." <br /><br />Finally, Leerdammer hopes to stabilize <em>LittleBigPlanet</em>'s online functions, hopefully eliminating lag and packet loss issues. Between these patches and the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/21/littlebigplanet-getting-wipeout-ape-escape-costumes/">promised downloadable content</a>, it's going to be a busy couple of months for <em>LittleBigPlanet</em> fans.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.mediamolecule.com/2009/01/26/welcome-the-ox-108-and-other-things/">Source</a> - Welcome To The Ox (1.08 And Other Things) [Media Molecule Blog]<br /><a href="http://www.mediamolecule.com/2009/01/22/more-cheese/">Source</a> - More Cheese [Media Molecule Blog]<br /><br />[Thanks, Mick]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/27/littlebigplanet-patched-to-1-08-lacks-cheese-but-adds-clothes/">LittleBigPlanet patched to 1.08, lacks cheese but adds clothes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 27 Jan 2009 10:40:00 EST. <em><br />White Knight Chronicles</em> has changed a lot since we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/20/tgs-hands-on-white-knight-story/">played it</a> at Tokyo Game Show last year. Our conclusion at the time was that the game would be a gorgeous JRPG with an intriguing, customizable battle system; an exciting prospect for RPG-starved PS3 owners to be sure. However, after today's <em>White Knight Chronicles</em> presentation, we're sure the game has the potential to be much more than that.<br /><br />A Level-5 employee introduced us to the game's story: It follows a boy and his search for a kidnapped princess <em>slash</em> love interest after discovering a conveniently hidden set of magic armor ... a tad clich&eacute;d (even by Japanese standards). In order to demonstrate the game's sense of enormity and scale we were shown a few concept pieces for the game. While rolling plains and towering castles are par for the course when it comes to JRPGs, it's been a while since we've seen an entire town straddled atop an enormous creature.<br /><br />We covered the battle system quite extensively <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/20/tgs-hands-on-white-knight-story/">at TGS last year</a>. We took the opportunity to space out a little while the developers explained how to link character abilities together into combos, using the palette menu and how Leonard can transform into the eponymous White Knight. Not that we were bored -- the battle system was the only thing that really set <em>White Knight Chronicles</em> apart. Until it was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/08/white-knight-story-gets-four-player-online-co-op/">revealed</a> that the game would have a four-player online mode, that is.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/white-knight-chronicles-tgs-2008/">White Knight Chronicles TGS 2008</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/white-knight-chronicles-tgs-2008/#1091569"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/whiteknightchroniclesscreenieawesome1110081024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/white-knight-chronicles-tgs-2008/#1089026"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/whiteknightchroniclestgs200831024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/white-knight-chronicles-tgs-2008/#1089025"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/whiteknightchroniclestgs200811024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/white-knight-chronicles-tgs-2008/#1089024"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/whiteknightchroniclestgs200821024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/white-knight-chronicles-tgs-2008/#1089023"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/whiteknightchroniclestgs2008171024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/11/tgs-08-white-knight-chronicles-impressions/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>TGS 08: White Knight Chronicles impressions</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/11/tgs-08-white-knight-chronicles-impressions/">TGS 08: White Knight Chronicles impressions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 11 Oct 2008 13:00:00 EST. <p>An 18-year-old man was punched in the face with brass knuckles and then kicked during a dispute over the ownership of a PlayStation 3, the <a href="http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/tribunereview/news/westmoreland/s_585251.html">Tribune-Review</a> reports. Here's how it went down: the unidentified victim went up to a group of about 30 people 9:30PM in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, curious to know why people were gathered there. Next thing he knew, it was brass knuckles in the face and his PS3 was taken from him.</p>
<p>Now the police are searching for four men who assaulted him, as they were not apprehended at the scene of the crime. Maybe it was best not to approach a large group of people gathered on a street corner after-dark with your PS3, huh?<br /></p>

An <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=aClqhxdVor6g&amp;refer=home">article</a> published by Bloomberg today concludes that the PS3 "is gaining ground" on the Xbox 360. The article cites the PS3's ability as a Blu-ray player and software exclusives such as <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metal-gear-solid-4">Metal Gear Solid 4</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/littlebigplanet">LittleBigPlanet</a></em> as reasons why it will "hold onto its lead" after outselling the 360 in the first five months of 2008. According to the NPD Group, the PS3 sold 1.2 million units while the 360 sold 1.12 million units. Of course, Microsoft isn't about to give up so easily. When asked about the PS3's dominance over the 360 so far this year, Microsoft spokesperson David Dennis claims the race is "far from over and we are confident that we have a winning strategy."<br />

<div align="left"><span class="news_story_title"></span><br /><span class="news_story_title">The most controversial comments in the article, however, were made by Sony CEO Howard Stringer at a media conference last week regarding another competitor: "I've played a Nintendo Wii, I don't see it as a competitor. Is it a game? Is it interactive art? Is it <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/22/meet-the-team-ludwig-kietzmann/">Ludwig</a>'s most anticipated PS3 release of 2008? <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3168080">1UP</a> has shed new light on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/afrika">Afrika</a>, the long-awaited safari-themed title from Rhino Studios. <br /><br />Digging through the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu, they discovered that the game - now officially slated for August 28 in Japan - will allow players (or, um ... <em>viewers</em>?) to switch between first-person, overhead, and animal-eye-views of the gorgeous African plains. What's more, players will be able to travel on foot or behind the wheel of off-road vehicles while snapping photos.<br /><br />The <em>prettiness</em> that is <em>Afrika</em> will hopefully hit the US this year, be it as a boxed or PSN release. We expect to hear more on Sony's plans for this unique title at next month's E3 expo.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/04/safaris-up-ps3-stunner-afrika-detailed-dated-for-japan/">Safari's up: PS3 stunner Afrika detailed, dated for Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 04 Jun 2008 22:30:00 EST. Sony's role, according to Hirai, is to work with publishers to make the PS3 releases of their games "more compelling for the consumers than any other version." Hirai says that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/blu-ray">Blu-ray Disc</a> is the key to this, since its capacity for huge amounts of data makes it perfectly suited for movie-style bonus features and "maybe additional levels."<br /><br />With third-parties "going wide" with their biggest releases, Hirari believes that internal dev teams will play a pivotal role in defining the overall PlayStation experience with "envelope-pushing, genre-defining content." Bring it on, Kaz.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/84196-Sony-President-Exclusives-Dont-Always-Make-Sense">The Escapist</a>]

Then, we heard rumors of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/07/21/rumor-sony-tries-to-copy-nintendo-again/">Sony trying to bite off Nintendo's style</a> again. Now, almost two years later, we <a href="http://playstationlifestyle.net/2008/05/31/exclusive-info-on-the-new-sony-ps3-controller/">hear about this</a>?<br /><br />Apparently, a small group of PS3 owners were taken to a location in California where they got to test out a new Sony product, a sort of PS3 remote that very much mimics the functionality of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wiimote">Wiimote</a>. While there, participants apparently enjoyed minigames such as tennis, fencing and paintball. The demonstrator also showed the folks some <em>Quake</em> on his laptop with the device. <br /><br />But, before you grab your torch and pitchfork, know that Sony hasn't finalized the product yet. There's apparently many kinks that need to be worked out, as the device is right now dependent upon a large tripod. <br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/02/rumor-sony-creates-their-own-wiimote-focus-tests-it/">Rumor: Sony creates their own Wiimote, focus tests it</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 02 Jun 2008 15:00:00 EST. There are a number of negative traits associated with video game press events and conventions, the most obvious of which being the time and expense required to haul one's widely dispersed blogging crew to the west coast (or in some cases, overseas). However, not many know about a phenomenon known widely in our circle as "Blogger Stench", a condition brought on by packing a convention hall with tired, sweaty, uncomfortably close gaming writers. Luckily, Ubisoft is taking measures to avoid this putrid odor -- simply by <a href="http://ps3.ign.com/articles/877/877636p1.html">bringing one of their events into an odorless space</a>.<br /><br />Okay, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ubidays/">they're still holding their Ubidays press event</a> in Paris today -- but for the next five days, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/27/meet-playstation-homes-media-and-events-space/">PlayStation Home's Media and Events space</a> will be dedicated to previewing new Ubisoft titles, such as <em>Prince of Persia</em>, <em>Tom Clancy's HAWX</em>, and <em>Soul Calibur IV</em>. Those blessed with a closed beta account can check out these new titles from the comfort of their own homes -- those who attended the brick-and-mortar Ubidays event will likely spend the next five days replacing their overseas wardrobe and attempting to remove their outermost layer of skin with a Brillo pad.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/29/ubisoft-holding-first-third-party-media-event-in-playstation-hom/">Ubisoft holding first third-party media event in PlayStation Home</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 29 May 2008 20:00:00 EST. While it may seem seem like just yesterday that we first played Sony's love note to console gear heads in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gran-turismo"><em>Gran Turismo</em></a>, it was actually ten years ago ... a realization that made us feel incredibly old as Sony and developer Polyphony Digital announced that the sim, that first got its license in December 1997, has shipped more than 50 million units across the globe.<br /><br />This figure, of course, includes the recently released <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/granturismo5"><em>Gran Turismo 5 Prologue</em></a>, which according to Sony has shipped out more than 2 million units. The company is playing coy, though, as to whether this number includes just physical products or digital downloads over PSN as well. We'd like to extend our hand and congratulate the series for making it this far, but unfortunately it didn't stop between the two yellow lines on the pavement so it's going to have to go back to the start and <em>try again</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/09/gran-turismo-series-ships-more-than-50-million-globally/">Gran Turismo series ships more than 50 million globally</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 09 May 2008 10:57:00 EST. According to a job posting over at Gamasutra, 2K Marin (the new Irrational Games) is looking for those experienced in the ways of Wii and PS3 design. Now, we've all seen these job postings never pan out into what we hoped they would before (confirmation that the game in question will release on the platforms in question), but sometimes <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/05/telltale-has-their-wii-programmer/">these things pan out</a>.<br /><br />Rumor had it that the first <em>Bioshock </em>game was going <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/26/todays-ridiculous-rumor-bioshock-for-the-wii/">to be ported over to the Wii</a>, but the likelihood of that happening now is between none and, well ... <em>none</em>. But, could 2K Marin be developing the game with the Wii in mind from the get-go? It is a possibility. We hear 2K likes money. And putting your game on Wii gives you more of a chance to get precious money. <br /><br />We'll just have to wait and see.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=175028">GamePro</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/08/bioshock-2-dev-posts-job-listing-for-experienced-wii-and-ps3-des/">Bioshock 2 dev posts job listing for experienced Wii and PS3 designers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Apr 2008 12:45:00 EST. While this may sound like good news at first as it may have led to a possible PS3 price cut, the actual reason behind this necessary change carries a more negative connotation.<br /><br />The reason for the cost reduction is because the company is currently losing money off export goods. This comes to light from the strengthening value of the Japanese yen versus the US dollar. For every one-yen gain against the dollar, Sony loses <span class="saleprice">?</span>6 billion (US$58.3 million). With a weakened US economy and a loss like that, we wouldn't be surprised to hear that a PS3 price cut won't be happening anytime soon or within this year for that matter. Looks like that previous <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/19/gamestop-predicts-50-ps3-price-cut/">price cut prediction</a> won't be coming true after all.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/03/sony-cuts-production-costs-ps3-price-cut-not-likely-though/">Sony cuts production costs, PS3 price cut not likely though</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 03 Apr 2008 15:30:00 EST. Various British retailers have told <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=185443">CVG</a> that 80GB PS3 SKUs might be on the way to the UK by the end of Summer. CVG reports that employees from both wholesaler Costco and music store HMV are hearing that the 80GB models are likely to hit the UK in a few months.<br /><br />Sony's official take on the rumor is one we're not surprised to hear, "There's no official word on an 80GB PS3 coming to the UK." At least it's better than the usual "Sony does not comment on rumors and speculation." Almost the same thing really though; however, from the former's wording, it sounds most likely that something is in the works. <br /><br />Support for an 80 gig model in Europe seems to be a logical step. After all, with increasing mandatory installs and new features such as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/PlayTV/">PlayTV</a> coming soon, there will be a higher demand for more HDD space.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/27/rumor-uk-80-gig-ps3-by-summer/">Rumor: UK 80 gig PS3 by summer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 Mar 2008 13:30:00 EST. This niche group of gangster-loving film buffs will probably be pleased to learn that not only is <a href="http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/03/07/you-wont-get-away-that-easily-getaway-3-still-in-production/">a<em> Getaway </em>release still on its way to the PS3</a>, but a film adaptation of the game is also possibly in the cards.<br /><br />These hints were dropped by <em>The Getaway 3</em>'s writer, Katie Ellwood, who mentioned that SCEA was in talks with various production houses to try and hand off the rights to bring the series to theatres. It's certainly a better body of work to base a movie off of than <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nlrccN9jr0">other</a> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8xm_WmRuoc">game-adapted</a> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAxG4u_rqug">films</a> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UkLiZt38Kg&amp;feature=related">we can</a> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaNoQCokHo8">think of</a> -- a sentiment we wouldn't suggest disagreeing with, unless <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HAQ3pNHwj4">you wish to be fed to half-starved pigs</a> (link NSFW, and completely awesome).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/09/the-getaway-still-on-its-way-to-ps3-possibly-to-theatres/">The Getaway still on its way to PS3, possibly to theatres</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 09 Mar 2008 17:30:00 EST. What could the <a href="http://www.fbo.gov/spg/USAF/AFMC/AFRLRRS/FA8751-08-R-0016/SynopsisP.html">US Air Force need 300 PS3s</a> for? Military training via <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/warhawk/">Warhawk</a></span>? Maybe they want to give the troops some recreational games -- some <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/echochrome/"><span style="font-style: italic;">echochrome</span></a> perhaps? Nope, none of the above. Instead, the USAF will be using the 300 40GB PS3 consoles to conduct a "technology assessment of certain cell processors." <br /><br />Apparently, the PS3 is perfect for the Air Force's research as it's the only hardware on the market that utilizes the specific cell processor characteristics they'll be needing, and it comes at a reasonable price. While we could think of multiple conspiracy theories about this research, we think we'll stay quiet and leave the speculations to you. Besides, right now we've got to tell the USAF that those 40GB PS3s won't be coming with four USB ports and Memory Stick slots like they have listed on the solicitation document. That is ... unless the military is getting a new 40GB model we've never heard about? Highly doubt that one.<br /><br />[Thanks Schoolimangooli! However, <a href="http://ps3.qj.net/Hideo-Kojima-Blu-ray-doesn-t-have-enough-space-for-Metal-Gear-Solid-4/pg/49/aid/114921">a recent interview with series creator Hideo Kojima revealed a startling fact</a> about <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/MGS4/">MGS4</a> </em>-- Kojima complained that a few features had to be cut from the game so it would fit on a Blu-ray disc. As format fanatics already know, that means the game takes up nearly 50 gigabytes of space. <br /><br />If true, this is bad news for anyone who hoped to see <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/19/metal-gear-solid-4-trailer-leaks-onto-net/">anthropomorphic cow-bots</a> on the 360 (unless that data was divided between about five dual-layer DVDs), but it could also mean a painfully long installation time for PS3 owners as well. We can only imagine that 49 of those gigabytes are taken up by thousands of variations on just three lines of dialogue -- "Snake? SNAKE? <a href="http://mgbueller.ytmnd.com/">SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE</a>!?"<br /><br />[Thanks, Beau Kebodeaux<a href="http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45754">]</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/02/kojima-mgs4-too-big-for-50-gb-blu-ray-disc/">Kojima: MGS4 too big for 50 GB Blu-ray disc</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 02 Mar 2008 20:30:00 EST. In their latest poll, our good buddies over at <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/02/20/poll-what-blu-ray-player-will-you-be-picking-up/">EngadgetHD</a> beg the question: What Blu-ray player will you be picking up? With the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/16/its-really-over-folks-toshiba-drops-hd-dvd/">death of HD DVD</a> ending the format wars, there is only one choice left for high-def needs: Blu-ray. New buyers and HD DVD refugees alike need to make a choice; so what Blu-ray player did they choose? Why, the PS3 of course!<br /> <br />Even though polling is still going on, the PS3 is the clear winner at 56.6% of the total votes. The next closest Blu-ray player is the Panasonic DMP-BD50 at 8.3%; we suspect it's not likely that the DMP-BD50 will catch up to the PS3's massive 48% lead. What does this mean for the PS3? It means that sales can only go up from here.<br /><br />[Thanks Aaron!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/20/ps3-voted-most-wanted-blu-ray-player/">PS3 voted most wanted Blu-ray player</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Feb 2008 18:45:00 EST. It really does seem like we can't throw a stick without hitting <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/22/fcc-approves-ceramic-white-ps3-for-us/">a new PS3 SKU</a> or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/01/ps3-price-cut-coming-october-12th/">news of a price drop</a> -- a <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=32468">recent advancement in Blu-ray technology</a> could signal the creation of yet another PS3 model or lowered price for the system some time in the near future, should Sony decide to incorporate it into their home console. <br /><br />Sony and LED manufacturer Nichia recently jointly created a smaller, more efficient Blu-ray laser that would significantly lower PS3 production costs should it replace the PS3's current "chubby laser". This, in addition to the many <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/11/analyst-ps3-production-costs-dropped-by-50-in-a-year/">other cost-cutting innovations</a> Sony implemented in the past year, might lead to yet another price cut for the system -- but the unmentioned, non-discounted inclusion of the lil' laser into existing SKUs is just as likely. We're certain we'll hear more about this in the coming months, once the PS3 hardware market has <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/24/best-buy-closing-out-80gb-ps3/">cooled its proverbial jets</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/26/smaller-blu-ray-laser-could-reduce-ps3-production-costs/">Smaller Blu-ray laser could reduce PS3 production costs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 26 Jan 2008 11:00:00 EST. <p><em>Every (other) Tuesday, Mike Sylvester brings you <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/revolutionary/">REVOLUTIONARY</a>, a look at the wide world of Wii possibilities. </em></p>
<span style="float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-top: 7px;"> <script> var digg_url = 'http://www.digg.com/nintendo/Revolutionary_Controller_Showdown_Round_1'; </script> <script src="http://digg.com/api/diggthis.js"></script></span>
<p>Nintendo has recently been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/15/former-midway-employee-created-wii-back-in-1990-apparently/">accused</a> by a former game developer of copying the idea for the Wii's central point of interest, but whether or not Nintendo took inspiration from this industrious engineer is not the topic of today's Revolutionary. There have been many <a target="_blank" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Glove">motion</a>-<a target="_blank" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rLhIwp2iGk">based</a> <a target="_blank" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U-Force">game</a> <a target="_blank" href="http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=584">controllers</a> to precede the Wiimote, but none have been so well-received that they can pull double duty as the gearworks of a money printing machine. For the Playstation 3, Sony took a page from Nintendo's playbook and ran with it, so we'll be putting the SIXAXIS through its paces to see how it measures up.<br /></p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/16/revolutionary-controller-showdown-round-1/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Revolutionary: Controller Showdown, Round 1</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/16/revolutionary-controller-showdown-round-1/">Revolutionary: Controller Showdown, Round 1</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Jan 2008 11:15:00 EST. This is something we never imagined we'd be discussing. With the Wii's lack of HD output, we never gave much thought to the new formats of HD-DVD and Blu-ray. Now, we're going to have to rethink things, as a very interesting piece comes courtesy of Rob Enderle.<br /><br />He seems to think that because the Wii is so popular, but unable to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/19/nintendo-says-theyre-making-1-8-million-wiis-a-month/">completely fulfill</a> the incredible demand for the console up until now, Nintendo inadvertently pushed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/another-week-in-japan/">sales</a> over to Sony's PS3. This, combined with the good numbers Blu-ray discs were getting at retail, are going to be big factors in what Enderle sees as Blu-ray's eventual victory.<br /><br />While the high definition format war isn't something that we usually cover here at Wii Fanboy, it's interesting to see someone look at Nintendo's problem of satiating demand for the console in this way. <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=33003">Go Nintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/09/nintendo-to-help-blu-ray-win-the-format-war/">Nintendo to help Blu-ray win the format war?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 Jan 2008 17:00:00 EST. Once you've seen an unclothed bathing suit area at 1080p, lower definition skin flicks just seem to lose their appeal. Many porno purveyors have already made the leap to high definition formats -- such as Digital Playground, which publishes movies <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/12/porn-industry-leaning-toward-hd-dvd/">exclusively in HD-DVD</a>, much to the chagrin of pornstars left with pockmarked skin after years of spite and heroin abuse.<br /><br />However, Joone, the company's single-named founder, has recently <a href="http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/12/20/playstation-3-owners-want-porn-and-digital-playground-is-list/">reconsidered his position</a> in the resolution war, agreeing to publish Digital Playground pictures (starting with their 2005 award-winning blockbuster <em>Pirates</em>) in Blu-ray as well. Why the change of heart? According to Joone, "A lot of people were e-mailing that bought a PlayStation 3 and they were basically saying, 'When are you guys going to release Blu-ray?'" Pornophilic PS3 owners can buckle their swashes when <em>Pirates</em> is released January 4th -- we suggest watching the timeless classic <em>American Bangster</em> to tide you over until then.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/22/hd-porn-studio-swayed-to-blu-ray-by-ps3-owners/">HD porn studio swayed to Blu-ray by PS3 owners</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 22 Dec 2007 13:00:00 EST. Hurray!<br /> <br /> "Previously, a single home gaming platform [PS2] was the market leader worldwide, but that pattern has changed," the company said in a statement. "Whichever platform best caters to users' preferences in a particular country or region, in terms of the games available to be played on it, is now the one that will dominate the local market."<br /> <br />Being the well-informed readers that you are, you'll be well aware that the Wii <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/13/wii-is-officially-best-selling-next-generation-console/">snagged first place</a> from the Xbox 360 back in September, and apparently continues to be <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/01/wii-will-fail-to-meet-demand-this-holiday/">hugely desirable</a> to consumers. And although Konami is correct to point out that the race is more finely balanced than in the last generation, there's still a distance to go yet. If anything, we'd bank on Nintendo to stretch its lead.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/13/that-fence-comfy-konami/">That fence comfy, Konami?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 Nov 2007 20:30:00 EST. Have you ever seen anything so ... boxed in your entire life? What wouldn't you give to see that hot little piece of rumbling plastic shed its outer layer to reveal the deliciousness within, like some sort of be-dual-sticked piece of electronic corn?<br /><br />... OK, so we can't claim to understand unboxing fetishists entirely, but we can at least try to make up for it by appealing to their basest desires. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/12/sony-dualshock-3-unboxing-ready-to-rumble/">Engadget Tokyo</a> has one of the first retail <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/DualShock3/">DualShock 3</a>s and they're taking the clamshell off ... slow.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/12/thill-as-the-dualshock-3-is-unboxed/">Thrill as the DualShock 3 is unboxed!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 Nov 2007 10:33:00 EST. According to Ive's story, he sent in his faulty system to be repaired, only to be told that his warranty had been voided by the massive amounts of dust that had accumulated within the casing.<br /><br />Here's our favorite part of the story: When asked what part of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/warranty/">warranty</a> says that a dusty system cannot be replaced, his helpful customer service representative told him that dust collection could either be considered customer abuse, or an act of God. We'd like to think that if the Lord did destroy Ive's PS3, he would do so with a plague of locusts, or perhaps a well-placed bolt of lightning. Dust collection just lacks that celestial panache, you know?<br /><br /><strong>Update: </strong><a href="http://consumerist.com/consumer/audio/sony-csr-what-no-dust-doesnt-void-your-ps3-warranty-321288.php">The Consumerist</a> has more on this, an apparent confusion within the realms of customer support. Dust obviously doesn't void your warranty, but it seems it was cited as evidence of neglect in this case (and forms of neglect do void the system's warranty).<br /><br />[Thanks, SickNic]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/10/god-destroys-young-mans-ps3-with-dust/">God destroys young man's PS3 with dust [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 10 Nov 2007 19:15:00 EST. According to<a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3164283"> 1UP's Quartermann</a>'s Nostradamian prediction you might be able to get your <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Bioshock/">BioShock</a></em> fix soon. In the latest rotation of EGM's rumor mill, the exclusivity of the underseas fiasco has been brought into question, and PS3 owners could find themselves frolicking through Rapture sometime in 2008. However, this report contradicts the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/24/levine-confirms-no-ps3-bioshock-and-does-mea-culpa-on-pc-issues/">statement</a> of <em>BioShock's</em> lead designer Ken Levine that the game is not PS3 bound. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/2KGames/">2K Games</a>, <em>would you kindly confirm or deny this rumor?</em><br /><br />Quartermann also has great news for the feverish fans of FOXHOUND who were upset by the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/31/metal-gear-solid-4-delayed-until-q2-2008/">recent <em>MGS4</em></a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/01/metal-gear-solid-4-delay-causes-konami-stock-price-to-fall/">delay</a> - a new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Metal%20Gear">Metal Gear</a><em> </em>game for the PSP is on it's way, ready to heal those wounds. Reportedly, Kojima Productions is working on the title right now, which will "take Snake back to the early days of his career." Not his career as a master of espionage, mind you, but his first career as a pastry chef in a small Rhode Island bistro.<br /><br />Also rumored: Sega isn't letting the lukewarm reception of their two first next-gen <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Sonic/">Sonic</a> games break their stride, as they're apparently hard at work on a new, "real" Sonic game. We don't know whether "real" means a return to the game's classic platforming roots, or if we can expect more creepy <a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=mPcGGHtKqyQ">interspecies make-out sessions.</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/10/rumor-bioshock-on-ps3-new-metal-gear-on-psp/">Rumor: BioShock on PS3, new Metal Gear on PSP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 10 Nov 2007 12:25:00 EST. <div align="center"><a href="http://jbooth.blogspot.com/2007/10/ps3-misconceptions-and-spin.html"><img vspace="4" hspace="0" border="0" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/10/rockbandspecialbox-hard.jpg" /></a><br /></div>
And "spin," as the blog entry either suggests or <em>commands</em> at the outset. Jason Booth, a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Harmonix/">Harmonix</a> alum who lists <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/GuitarHero/">Guitar Hero</a></em>, <em>Guitar Hero II</em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/RockBand/">Rock Band</a></em> as projects he's worked on, <a href="http://jbooth.blogspot.com/2007/10/ps3-misconceptions-and-spin.html">has posted</a> a lengthy and vaguely technical discussion about the difficulties developers may face when making games for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Apparently it's not all sunshine and roses!<br /></div>
<br />Booth suggests that PS3 games are often disadvantaged when ported, as developers have to jump through extra hoops in order to get Sony's system to do what the Xbox 360 can with more ease and less time. It's a fair observation from an insider, certainly, but hardly the blast of searing truth meant to burn away our many "misconceptions." With developers <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/11/valves-gabe-newell-says-ps3-a-waste-of-time/">expressing discontent</a>, PS3 publishers <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/19/takahashi-sony-begging-ps3-devs-to-stay-on-board/">being sweet-talked</a> and games stumbling over <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/31/stranglehold-slips-again-on-pc-ps3/">multiple</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/06/the-orange-box-delayed-on-ps3/">noted</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/02/midway-expects-unreal-tournament-3-to-slip-into-08/">delays</a>, it's been fairly obvious that the system has been getting a raw deal due to its technical composition and accompanying challenges. <br /><br />It's bad news for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/npd">struggling</a> PS3, but it's also not an unusual situation to arise during <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/cod4">multiplatform development</a>. When a developer chooses to develop the same game across different sets of technology, compromises and hardships are likely to rear their hideous, misshapen heads. If you don't think it's all business as usual though, feel free to read all the technical nitty-gritty yourself and respond with an eloquent comment (<a href="http://jbooth.blogspot.com/2007/10/ps3-misconceptions-and-spin.html#c2121939066071342679">example:</a> "what would you know about it? all of harmoniax games looks like shit").<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/10/26/harmonix-developer-shoots-down-ps3-tech-in-rant/">PS3 Fanboy</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/26/former-harmonix-developer-tackles-ps3-misconceptions/">Former Harmonix developer tackles PS3 'misconceptions'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 26 Oct 2007 18:45:00 EST. We were perusing pictures of the <a href="http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/10/15/sonys-newest-ps3-model-ps3-chocolate/">150 chocolate PS3s</a> that Sony created for Italian event Eurochocolate when it occurred to us: Video game consoles are some of the few items we use in out day-to-day life that we're really glad <em>aren't </em>actually made out of chocolate.<br /><br />Think about it. After the first time you played <em>Lair </em>then looked at the calendar and saw how long it was until <em>Metal Gear Solid 4</em>, would you have really been able to resist just eating the PS3 whole? Can you think of any Wii game that could be described as "better than eating a block of chocolate, a bar of chocolate, a rope of chocolate and an analog stick of chocolate"? And what about the 360? Can you imagine how tough it is to get <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rrod">melted chocolate stains</a> off of an entertainment center?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/15/sony-unveils-the-chocolate-ps3/">Sony unveils the chocolate PS3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Oct 2007 16:26:00 EST. PC World <a href="http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,136535-c,gameconsoles/article.html">reports</a> all the 60GB PS3s are out of the house and looking for a home. Sony's Dave Karraker confirms, "We no longer have any inventory in SCEA warehouses. All inventory has been purchased and shipped to retailers." So, if you still want a PS3 without <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/09/80gb-ps3-has-limited-backwards-compatibility/">limited backwards compatibility</a>, here's your last chance. Once the 60GB sell out, that's all she wrote.<br /><br />Now, we have to ask, was it all a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/14/ps3-60gb-is-not-a-price-drop-its-a-clearance-sale/">clearance sale</a> or will the 80GB drop down to the $499 price once the channel is cleared? Karraker says, "We won't be making any further announcements ... until the 60GB model is exhausted and market conditions are evaluated." Place your bets if it'll be before or after the holiday. Whatever it takes to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/23/july-npd-wii-climbs-to-the-top-ps3-overcomes-100k-hump/">build that install base</a> at this point.<br /><br />[Thanks Marcus]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/30/ps3-60gb-are-officially-all-out-in-the-wild/">PS3 60GB are officially all out in the wild</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 30 Aug 2007 10:10:00 EST. We wouldn't do it to ours, even if these tests are, in fact, true. With that disclaimer, let's talk about the "108 hour" tests a set of PS3's went through to see how much the system could handle before failing. How much could they handle? Apparently, everything. PS3's were played for 108 hours straight, switching between games and Blu-ray movies. If you want a more detailed list of the test's parameters, <a href="http://www.ps3vault.com/how-to-kill-a-ps3-console-1975">they're here</a>. Three scenarios all came with the same result: the PS3 freakin' rocks.<br />
<ul>
    <li> In a standard living room, the PS3 was perfectly fine except for a strange noise coming from the disc tray after 12 hours. Nothing surprising there!</li>
    <li>The PS3 was put in the back of a freezer van for the second test, where the temperature gradually went from 50 degrees to 0 degrees (Fahrenheit). When the temperature reached zero, the PS3 started to become sluggish and eventually, the screen blacked out. However, this was due to a power cord getting a bit too moist -- the PS3 still worked fine.</li>
    <li>Placing the PS3 in a hot sauna seems like a terrible idea -- where the temperature went from 100 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit over time. After 64 hours, there was a slight burning smell and after 108 hours, the console was extremely hot (no, really?) but the console still worked fine after 108 hours.</li>
</ul>
Amazing stuff, really. Again, we would never try to play our PS3 for 108 hours straight in our living room, let alone a freezer or hot sauna. Nor would we recommend you doing so! We'll take this test and their results with a grain of salt, but we have to admit -- our PS3's haven't had any trouble despite how long we've played them. So either the PS3 is indestructible, or it has <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNz6cZYM6Vs">every disease known to man</a>. Anyone on their second PS3?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/13/is-the-ps3-indestructible/">Is the PS3 indestructible?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 13 Aug 2007 15:00:00 EST. Gamasutra reports that there are <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=15002">conflicting signals</a> about how much longer the PS3 Starter Pack will be offered in Europe and PAL territories. The Starter Pack was Sony's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/sony-not-cutting-price-in-europe-ouch/">answer to Europe</a> for them not receiving the US price drop. Questions revolve around why PAL territories would continue to have a 60GB model when we know that's being <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/14/ps3-60gb-is-not-a-price-drop-its-a-clearance-sale/">phased out </a>and GameSpot Australia reports that their Starter Pack will be <a href="http://au.gamespot.com/news/6176238.html">done</a> Aug. 31. It also doesn't help that Sony sent emails to Euro PS3 owners who bought their consoles days before the Starter Pack was introduced were told that it was just a "a summer promotion." A SCEE spokesperson said to Gamasutra, "As far as the UK and Europe are concerned there is no time limit on the availability of the Starter Pack".<br /><br />If SCEE's David Reeve's promise of "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/20/mcv-says-sony-readying-announcements-for-leipzig/">fireworks</a>" holds up then maybe there'll be some Sony Europe announcements at Leipzig. The Games Convention is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/leipzig/">Leipzig</a> could be hiding a bunch of announcements for the European/PAL market. From what's going on with the PS3, to the deal with the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/07/europe-gets-no-xbox-360-price-cut-at-this-time/">no Xbox 360 price drop</a>. Hopefully PAL territories will get some answers in a couple weeks.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/07/pal-starter-pack-in-question/">PAL starter pack in question</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Aug 2007 12:45:00 EST. While selling one million consoles in Japan should have been simple beyond belief, Sony should still revel in the feeling while they can. Will the game make a splash on US shores when it hits in a matter of months? Perhaps, perhaps not. As far as <em>Hot Shots Golf 5</em> goes, it's one of the best-selling PS3 games in Japan to date and we're not surprised. It is, after all, their most popular domestic franchise developed internally. The question now is, will Japan sell 2 million PS3's by the end of the year?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/03/thanks-to-hot-shots-golf-japan-sells-one-millionth-ps3/">Thanks to Hot Shots Golf, Japan sells one millionth PS3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 03 Aug 2007 17:00:00 EST.
