Dead or Alive: Dimensions won't be available in Sweden, because it potentially violates the country's child pornography laws. The title will also skip Norway and Denmark as a result -- all three territories are covered by the same distributor, Bergsala. Eurogamer Sweden has a joint statement from Nintendo and Bergsala in which they claim to "have decided not to release the game in Sweden, for various reasons." However, neither company wished to list the reasons.

Allegedly, the genesis of the drama involves a forum poster noting that three of the DoA characters are under 18 years of age, which could violate Swedish law when placed in risque situations within the game's "Figure Mode." Animated images have been subject to child pornography laws in Sweden since 1980.
Dead or Alive: Dimensions yanked in Sweden, Norway and Denmark originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 May 2011 13:55:00 EST. We should warn you guys: The subject of this story is ... well, he's a man named Ron Jeremy. We know you guys probably haven't heard of this man before, but ... well, he's an actor. You definitely haven't seen him in anything, because ... he does adult films. Yes, pornography. We're sorry we had to take this post in such a blue direction, but we felt it important for you to be informed.

Mr. Jeremy, the pornographic actor, recently appeared on a CES panel which debated the effects of adult entertainment in the Internet era. As a riposte to an attack on his industry, Mr. Jeremy said, "we don't want kids to watch porn, though if they do, there are far worse influences out there - like video games. Studies have found that violent video games are much bigger a negative influence on kids." Oh, yeah? Then why is it acceptable to enjoy video games in public venues? Game, set and match, sir.
Ron Jeremy: games 'far worse' for kids than porn originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 10 Jan 2010 22:00:00 EST. We were just as shocked as you are -- people will pay to watch what now?! Copulation, you say? Apparently it's a booming business! As well as one that could be expanded with streaming access via the PlayStation 3, Vivid Entertainment head honcho Steven Hirsch told MCV recently. He believes companies like Japan's DMM are paving the way for streaming adult content on the PS3.

Though his company has yet to formally request its content be available on Sony's console, DMM has already proven such a thing is possible through the console's web browser. Unfortunately, this is one of those awkward moments where we have to inform the idea men behind this that so is ... the rest of the Internet. Let's hope enough people are ready to shell out their dough for the sheer convenience of it all.
Vivid Entertainment wants more porn on your PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 08 Sep 2009 15:30:00 EST. According to police, Mr. O'Shea did not own a computer and was solely employing his PS3 and the PlayStation Network to speak with the girl. When she refused to take them, he supposedly threatened to remove her from his friends list, saying, "Friends do things for each other. You're on my friends list. If you don't, I'm gonna remove you."

Using a camera attached to her PS3, the Texas girl then sent Mr. O'Shea the pictures which, according to police, Mr. O'Shea distributed through email "across the country." Parents of the 11-year-old girl notified authorities immediately when they found out about the actions, but apparently their daughter remained steadfast in her opinion of Mr. O'Shea, asking police, "Why is my friend going to jail?" Mr. O'Shea is being charged with:

Sexual performance of a child

Online solicitation of a minor

Promotion of child pornography

Those sound like three pretty good reasons right there. According to GamePolitics, Sony provided technical assistance to the Texas police in helping to track down O'Shea.

[Thanks, Gian S.!]

Suspected pedophile targets Texas girl using PS3 and camera originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 16 Mar 2009 16:41:00 EST. Since the advent of the Wii browser, some sites have taken it upon themselves to provide Wii-optimized content, and shockingly, some of those sites specialize in adult content. Some individuals have made the point that this content is directed at children. One site initially posed this theory last month and has (unsurprisingly) been deluged with comments. The folks at The Porn Talk keep reviving the issue, and they even made a page dedicated to the porn threat in living rooms around the world. In the wake of the backlash following that move, they've asked a question of gamers: "So what advice would you have for parents that don't understand technology? What advice would you give to Moms and Dads in regards to internet porn and Wi-Fi devices like the Wii? Is porn exposure to kids even an issue in your opinion?"

Well, let's see if we can't provide a few answers.
Continue reading Wii: Your portal to ... porn?

Wii: Your portal to ... porn? originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Feb 2007 17:45:00 EST. This is the terrifyingly serious question posed and placed under investigation by a crack (snorting) team of reporters at <strike>WTFAA</strike> WTAA-TV news. "Investigation" here having the definition of "predictably targeting a sensational topic and hurling ineffective, foam darts at it." In a piece creatively titled "Playing with Porn", agent Shelly Slater discovers that "a simple game of [Wii] bowling" is "not so simple anymore." Indeed, there are people having raucous sex in those bowling alleys.

The trail of malicious crumbs leads her to conclude that the console's entirely unique ability to access the internet makes it easy for kids to download sexually explicit shenanigans. Indeed, merely clicking the inactive "News Channel" launches open a Pandora's box of scantily-clad women. Rather than providing a helpful explanation as to how to activate the Wii's parental controls, Slater attempts to contain and study the lurking smut.

She says "young kids get it," quoting one blogging "child" as saying "The first thing I thought of when I downloaded the Wii browser was also porn." Only the full quote, which is displayed on-screen, reads "Like any red blooded American male ages 18-45, the first thing I thought of when I downloaded the Wii browser was also porn." Quoting out of context? "It's gross, it's sick."

As if blowing into a flute while standing on a pile of festering garbage, the piece ends on a high note -- the consternated and defenseless mother accuses the industry of "tricking kids into learning too much, too fast" and expresses concern about people "trying to invade a fun game like the Wii." To make matters even worse, Slater completely fails to capitalize on the most obvious joke in the universe -- porn sites are "being configured to fit the Wii."

Perhaps she might further "investigate" the console's internet connectivity and download a clue.

Read -- Game console can be porn gateway
Watch -- Playing with Porn

[Thanks, Zertoss. Sandra Hemm bought the stick as a birthday present for her son, whom she described as "pretty devastated" over the discovery. Frankly when we were his age we would have just been thrilled at our luck.

A Gamestop spokesman said the company was investigating the incident and that standard procedure is for used cards to be wiped clean before being sold. As a precaution, local reporter Scott Friedman recommends parents try out used MemorySticks for themselves before handing them over to the kids. Or, you know, you could just shell out the extra $5 for a new stick and not worry about it.
Gamestop sells porn-packed used MemoryStick originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 08 Dec 2006 16:45:00 EST.
