You know, like we know it comes out on Sept. 20 in Japan, no word beyond that. What we do know is that there are a lot of multiplayer elements added and old Snake from <a href="http://mobile.joystiq.com/tag/mgs4/"><em>MGS4</em>.</a><br /><br />Sure it took a few years, but the PSP has become a dandy little handheld with some solid games and some exciting <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/07/god-of-war-chains-of-olympus-umd-capitates-march-4-08/">future titles</a> -- despite the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/06/no-more-psp-homebrew-talk-on-sonys-forums/">anti-homebrew message</a>. Sure, Sony kinda <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/05/psp-2000s-apparently-available-today/">released the PSP-2000 all stealth</a> this week instead of giving it the fanfare it deserved (a point made very clear in <a href="http://www.simulations.joystiq.com/2007/09/07/joystiq-podcast-016-super-sweet-16-edition/">our podcast</a>), but we're still hoping the best for the system. Now we just need an English version of this trailer.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/08/mgs-portable-ops-plus-trailer-translation-required/">MGS: Portable Ops + (plus) trailer, translation required</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 08 Sep 2007 08:25:00 EST. A tale of two box arts. Which will you choose? Pay attention: these two similar, but different, box arts for <em>Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus</em> have a crucial difference awaiting on the inside. One is the "Deluxe Edition" -- can you guess which one?<br /><br />The red cover on the right is for the premium edition, which not only includes a cool box, but also includes both <em>MGS: Portable Ops Plus</em> and the original<em> Portable Ops</em>. You will need the original in order to play the expansion pack, so those that missed the original will certainly want to pick up the combined bundle. The Japanese price for both? A mere <a href="http://www.play-asia.com/SOap-23-83-57ld-71-9f-49-en-84-j-70-25h7.html">$45</a>.<br /><br />No American release has been confirmed, but Amazon has already listed the game for a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/15/mgs-portable-ops-plus-spotted-on-gamefly-amazon/">November release</a>. Hopefully, the US will also receive its own ultra-value "Deluxe Edition."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/24/a-tale-of-two-box-arts-portable-ops-plus/">A tale of two box arts: Portable Ops Plus</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 24 Aug 2007 22:15:00 EST. The upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/17/mgs-portable-ops-plus-first-trailer/"><em>Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops</em></a> expansion pack hasn't been officially announced for US release yet. However, it appears that it won't be too long before we get confirmation that the game is coming to America ... and soon! <a href="http://www.gamefly.com/products/detail.asp?pid=128445&amp;t=0&amp;fcTrack=Search?-?Popularity">GameFly</a> is listing a November release date for this <em>MGS</em> sequel (of sorts). In addition, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UZVL9O/002-7260261-1587257?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=prey0f&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creativeASIN=B000UZVL9O">amazon.com</a> is listing a similar release date, and a retail price of $20.<br /><br />It's clear that the retailers know something Konami hasn't officially announced to the general gaming public. Stay tuned ... we know you want some Old Snake action on the go.<br /><br />[Thanks, Random!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/15/mgs-portable-ops-plus-spotted-on-gamefly-amazon/">MGS: Portable Ops Plus spotted on GameFly, amazon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 15 Aug 2007 09:54:00 EST. <p>Old Snake??? SNAKE?????!!!<br /><br />We were surprised by Konami's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/17/metal-gear-solid-portable-ops-expansion-announced/">sudden announcement</a> of a brand-new <em>Metal Gear Solid</em> game for PSP. We're not complaining, of course. This revamped <em>Portable Ops</em> includes a plethora of new modes, including Old Snake. Will this reveal secrets of the <em>MGS</em> lore that we've been patiently <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/08/portable-ops-crucial-to-metal-gear-solid-4-story/">waiting for</a>? Announced during the PlayStation Premier event in Tokyo, IGN <a href="http://uk.psp.ign.com/articles/805/805614p1.html">reports</a> that <em>Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops +</em> will primarily revolve around online play with <em>new</em> characters (including <em>old</em> wrinkly Snake) and stages. <br />The PlayStation Premiere event in Tokyo is in full swing and news is coming thick and fast. The latest news is that Konami has announced an expansion for the PSP title <em>Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops. </em>Focused on online play, the game will feature new levels and characters, as well as a new single player "Infinity mode". Not much more information regarding the gameplay has been released, however the price of the expansion will be 2,400 yen on its own, or 4,300 yen in a double pack with the original game. <br /><br />The expansion will be released in Japan on the 20th of September, with no word yet on an American/European release. We're intrigued and cannot wait to have a look at how this expansion works out. Hopefully it'll satisfy our<em> Metal Gear Solid</em> appetites until <em>MGS4</em> comes out in early '08. If the expansion reaches the English speaking world before then, that is.<br /><br />Check out <a href="http://uk.psp.ign.com/articles/805/805614p1.html">IGN</a> for some more screenshots.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/17/metal-gear-solid-portable-ops-expansion-announced/">Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops expansion announced</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Jul 2007 09:10:00 EST. A package containing all of these hits will also be available for 6900 yen.<br /><br />Unless these re-releases come with some significant additions, we find it unlikely that even hardcore Kojima fans will be throwing down their cash. Hopefully, this isn't the end of the 20th Anniversary announcements ... we're hoping for a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/03/konami-really-wants-to-do-a-metal-gear-psp-sequel/"><em>Portable Ops</em> sequel</a> (and some more info on the ever-elusive <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mgs4"><em>Metal Gear Solid 4</em></a> would be nice too).<br /><br />[<strong>Update:</strong> <a href="http://psp.ign.com/articles/793/793434p1.html">IGN</a> reports that a limited edition DVD will be packaged with the <em>MGS</em> bundle. The European division of Konami has launched a new <a href="http://www.mpoleague.com/main.php?c=documents&amp;s=display&amp;ID_Document=2">competitive league</a> for <em>Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops</em>. This PSP-exclusive title features extensive multiplayer modes and online options that have earned the title a passionate following <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/26/watch-the-metal-gear-solid-tournament-now/">amongst the hardcore</a>. English, French, German, Spanish and Italian players will be able to compete against fellow European players in both user-created and official tournaments. Three official tournaments are currently planned to take place between June and October.<br /><br />For those that need a little practice before trying the online battlefield, download the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/12/metal-gear-solid-portable-ops-multiplayer-demo/">multiplayer demo</a> and play with fellow PSP owners.<br /><br />[Thanks, <a href="http://mngro.wordpress.com/">Joel</a>!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/28/compete-in-the-official-mgs-portable-ops-league/">Compete in the official MGS Portable Ops league</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 28 May 2007 17:45:00 EST. Originally scheduled to go on sale last Friday, the European release of portable neck-breaking simulator <em>Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops</em> has been delayed due to a rather unfortunate oversight: the omission of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/BBFC/">BBFC</a> stamp (think ESRB rating, but with an accent) from the UMD. Apparently, the box proudly displays the appropriate stamp, but the disc packaged inside went out stampless. Retailers were forced to return all copies of the game while (we imagine) the bean counters at Konami snuck up behind the forgetful graphic designer, broke their neck, and shoved 'em in a locker. <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.pspfanboy.com/2007/05/04/whoops-metal-gear-solid-forgets-rating-no-longer-on-sale/">PSP Fanboy</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/07/doh-mgs-portable-ops-pulled-missing-uk-rating-on-umd/">D'oh! To make up for the excruciating delay, the PAL version will feature <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/12/pal-gets-exclusive-metal-gear-content/">new content</a> not available in the other releases, such as new characters, maps and missions. However, it appears Europeans will have to wait a little bit longer, as the game has been delayed yet again. Why? According to <a href="http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/PSP/Metal+Gear+Solid%3A+Portable+Ops/news.asp?c=2981">Pocket Gamer</a>, it appears that the box art artist forgot to include the BBFC (the UK equivalent of the ESRB) rating for the game.<br /><br />Without a rating on the <strike>box</strike> UMD, the game will not be sold at retailers. Whoops! This is a strange mishap, to say the least. It looks like European gamers will have to wait just a little bit longer as Konami fixes this mistake--but you guys are used to waiting, right?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/04/whoops-metal-gear-solid-forgets-rating-no-longer-on-sale/">Whoops! A PSP game that isn't called <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/12/yes-locoroco-gets-another-award-nomination/"><em>LocoRoco</em></a> finally wins an award? Japan's most popular gaming magazine, Famitsu, recently unveiled their <a href="http://www.famitsu.com/game/news/2007/04/20/103,1177037473,70570,0,0.html">Famitsu Awards</a> winners. PSP earned a valuable nod by stealing the "Best Portable Game" award with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/metal-gear-portable-ops/"><em>Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops</em></a>. Kojima's latest adventure certainly earns the award, with some spectacular graphics and a deep single and multiplayer gaming experience.<br /><br />While PSP fans can celebrate this victory, it should be noted that <em>Final Fantasy XII</em> (PS2) and <em>Pokemon Diamond &amp; Pearl</em> (DS) both won Game of the Year.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=13640">Gamasutra</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/23/metal-gear-solid-wins-best-portable-game-award-from-famitsu/">Metal Gear Solid wins Best Portable Game award from Famitsu</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Apr 2007 16:00:00 EST. A <a href="http://mpo.i-revo.jp/map/map.ja.html">new service</a> uses Google Maps to show you the points of interest you'll want to hit in order to recruit new characters via <em>Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops</em>' unique and innovative <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/17/metal-gear-solids-gps-demonstration/">GPS mode</a>. Although an English language version of this service is supposedly "coming soon," I wouldn't be surprised if it never saw the light of day: certainly, it would be a far more demanding undertaking to travel across the entirity of America in order to unlock as many characters as possible.<br /><br />Of course, the true <em>Metal Gear</em> fans have already started their cross-country trek.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/blog/index.php/2007/01/15/konami-launch-mgspo-soldier-recruit-map/">Pocket Gamer</a>]<br /><br /><strong>See also:</strong><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/17/unlock-all-of-mgs-pos-unique-characters/">Unlock all of MGS:PO's unique characters</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/15/see-where-mgs-soldiers-are-hiding/">See where MGS soldiers are hiding</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Jan 2007 15:00:00 EST. Here's a breakdown of the extras (via NeoGAF):<br />
<ul>
    <li>New "Boss Battle" mode allows players to unlock additional (unconfirmed) characters for recruitment </li>
    <li>At least 12 new characters will reportedly be added </li>
    <li>Existing characters will get expanded careers, which now focus on key attributes </li>
    <li>Two new multiplayer maps will be added</li>
</ul>
It's possible that a patch could be released to update the Japanese and US versions of <em>Portable Ops</em>; but if not, PSP's region freedom ensures that diehards will be able to enjoy the new content no matter where their locations. Would you buy this game twice?<br /><br />Update: changed "PAL" qualifiers to "European."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/12/pal-metal-gear-solid-portable-ops-gets-extras/">Euro Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops gets extras [update 1]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 12 Jan 2007 14:45:00 EST. A simple "hello" to one of the bloggers currently playing it is often unreturned, met only with a vacant stare at the greeter's neck and a forlorn sigh. It is with great, neck-preserving displeasure then, that we report on the status of a sequel to Snake's card-free PSP outing. <br /><br />In a recent (ish) PSM <a href="http://www.psmpodcast.com/audio/">podcast</a>, Ryan Payton, the assistant producer for Kojima Productions, underlines the strong possibility of a sequel. "If it's successful on the retail level there will definitely be a sequel." It's quite simple. If you desire said sequel, you'd best go buy the game ... and possibly discover that you don't really want a sequel after all.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=71373">Eurogamer</a>]<br /><br /><a href="http://www.psmpodcast.com/audio/">Listen</a> -- PSM Podcast (15:50)<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/03/gasp-mgs-portable-ops-may-see-sequel/">Gasp: MGS Portable Ops may see sequel</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 03 Jan 2007 07:00:00 EST. So, it should come as no surprise that this fully-featured PSP-exclusive sequel is selling well. In fact, according to <a href="http://www.jeux-france.com/news18584_mgs-portable-ops-au-top-des-ventes.html">Jeux France</a>, it appears as if Kojima's latest has sold 100,000 copies in Japan... in day one alone. (Cue lame joke from a DS fanboy: "there are that many PSPs in Japan?!")<br /><br />There's no doubt that the US version is also selling quite briskly. Hopefully, these sales are good enough to warrant a sequel, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/28/mgs-po-interview-confirms-games-awesomeness/">as previous promised</a>. The game's <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HKMG14/002-5813720-7043256?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=prey0f&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creativeASIN=B000HKMG14">now available</a> for US blokes, and is coming next year for the European territories.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/25/mgs-portable-ops-destroys-japan/">MGS Portable Ops destroys Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 25 Dec 2006 16:00:00 EST. Contrary to popular belief, the PSP has done quite well for itself, and some of the awards its received may surprise you. Here's a run-down of everything I've seen across the Internet:<br /><br /><u><strong>Gamespot</strong></u><br /><a href="http://www.gamespot.com/special_features/bestof2006/genre/index.html?page=5">Best Platformer: Daxter</a><br />Daxter beat out <em>three</em> Nintendo DS games, including <em>New Super Mario Bros</em>, thanks to its incredible technology, great personality and fantastic gameplay. "The gorgeous visuals and sound are wrapped in gameplay that is as polished and enjoyable as any full-fledged PlayStation 2 game. While not wholly original, Daxter sacrifices nothing and is simply an all-around amazing game."<br /><br /><a href="http://www.gamespot.com/special_features/bestof2006/platform/index.html?page=4">Best PSP Game: Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops</a><br />"Portable Ops not only delivers some of the best presentation quality to date on the PSP, but makes some meaningful, interesting changes to the MGS formula. The resulting game is very well suited to playing on the go and also achieves a better balance of gameplay and storytelling than previous Metal Gear Solid games."<br /><u><strong><br />IGN<br /></strong></u><a href="http://bestof.ign.com/2006/psp/39.html">PSP Game of the Year: Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror</a><br />"What's most impressive is the depth of the action -- no second analog stick required! The control scheme enables you to do everything from operate a set of gadgets and diffuse bombs to snipe enemies and sift through different enemy types, all without slowing down the pace of the action."<br /><br /><u><strong>Games Radar</strong></u><br /><a href="http://www.gamesradar.com/us/psp/game/news/article.jsp?articleId=20061222102721204040&amp;releaseId=20060313155021903080&amp;sectionId=1006&amp;pageId=2006122210561439018">WTF Award: LocoRoco</a><br />Games Radar certainly took a non-traditional approach to awards this year. "We also loved that you couldn't play this game without cracking a smile - the nonsense songs were insanely catchy, the bright colors and curvy shapes were captivating and the overall theme was almost relentlessly happy and fun. By forcing our jaded, stone-like faces to grin once again, <span class="SpellE"><em>LocoRoco</em></span> earns its Platinum Chalice like few other games on this list."<br /><br /><a href="http://www.gamesradar.com/us/psp/game/news/article.jsp?articleId=20061222102721204040&amp;releaseId=20060313155021903080&amp;sectionId=1006&amp;pageId=20061222105644253047">The "It Doesn't Actually Suck" Award: PSP</a><br />Games Radar understands what we've known all the time: PSP is a great system. "Eminently cute and weird as a $3 bill, LocoRoco had players controlling a world and tilting it in order for a smiling blobbish thing to collect goodies, get fatter, and eventually roll or drop past a finishing point. It was as if someone's strange drug-induced hallucination had come to life on the PSP, complete with a dandy soundtrack and a punishing difficulty factor."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/24/what-end-of-year-awards-did-psp-earn/">What end of year awards did PSP earn?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 24 Dec 2006 12:30:00 EST. The folks of <a href="http://hdrlying.com/2006/12/15/metal-gear-portable-ops-canary-in-the-coal-mine/">High Dynamic Range Lying</a> detail how <em>MGS:PO</em> may actually be testing new ideas for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/21/another-mgs4-trailer-for-us-to-enjoy/"><em>MGS4</em></a>, heading to the PS3. The new recruitment system, where Snake must capture enemies and convert them into allies might be a crucial aspect of the next-gen sequel:<br /><br />"In <em>MGS4</em>, there's no telling if Solid Snake himself will try to form his own fighting force. Otacon is heard in the E3 trailer, saying that Snake cannot do it alone, adding that he never had a chance. Could this be the catalyst that forces Snake to create a team capable of taking down the patriots, and stopping Liquid Ocelot? With <em>MGS4 </em>still in development for another year, the story of an old Snake single handedly silencing an entire army of mechs and soldiers seeming ridiculous, and little to none of the new allegiance system revealed, it seems more than likely that <em>MPO </em>may be more than a <em>Snake Eater </em>sequel."<br /><br />Sounds reasonable to me. For those of you that remember the original trailers for the game, there's "no place to hide" for Snake. With his body aging, and massive armored mechs walking around everywhere, Snake's going to need a lot of help.<br /><br />[Via digg]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/15/mgs-portable-ops-the-testing-ground-for-mgs4/">MGS Portable Ops: the testing ground for MGS4</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Dec 2006 08:50:00 EST. Or is that just a <em>Snake</em> in your pants? Solid Snake goes portable in a big way. Get ready for the biggest non-shock of the year: <em>Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops</em> is good. Very good. In fact, it's THE killer app that Sony fans have been waiting for:<br />
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ALL/PSP/content/~3/57553995/reviewPage">1UP</a> (<strong>95/100</strong>) - "All this translates into a game that essentially pushes the PSP in all of its features: graphics, portability, Internet, extra hardware doohickeys, and multiplayer. Sure, it might have hiccups (occasional ghosting, quirky A.I., the one analog nub), but <em>Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops</em> is not only a fine <em>MGS </em>title -- it's also a damn good showcase for the PSP."<br />.</li>
    <li><a href="http://psp.ign.com/articles/749/749133p1.html">IGN</a> (<strong>90/100</strong>) - "It's been a long time coming, but this is what <em>Metal Gear Solid</em> fans, and indeed PSP fans have been waiting for: a title that demonstrates what the technology of the PSP can actually do, with a solid action title to boot. The GPS and WiFi scanning feature is excellently implemented, the online and single player modes are deep, and there are plenty of things to do by tracking down and recruiting new soldiers from various places. This is one of the games to add to your collection if you have the PSP."<br />.</li>
    <li><a href="http://videogames.yahoo.com/gamereview?cid=1951332578&amp;tab=reviews&amp;page=0&amp;eid=495874">Yahoo</a> (<strong>80/100</strong>) - "This is one of the PSP's best multiplayer titles, giving you essentially a two-for-one experience. Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops isn't a must-have for everyone, but most gamers recruited into its ranks will be satisfied."</li>

However, some of you may have forgotten. Here are a few highlights from <a href="http://psp.ign.com/objects/783/783630.html">the week so far</a>:<br />
<ul>
    <li>As you may already know, <a href="http://psp.ign.com/articles/747/747914p1.html">the story</a> begins with Snake thrown into a South American jail six years after the events of <em>Snake Eater</em>. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, Russia abandoned many of its soldiers, leaving one military commander named Gene very sour. He plans on sabotaging the negotiations between Russia and the US by using nuclear technology stolen from both countries. Obviously, Snake will be in the middle of all of this.</li>
    <li>The character-generation system uses data from <em>both</em> the access point and PSP system information.</li>
    <li>You'll want to rotate characters in your party, as they'll suffer from exhaustion, and in the worst case scenario, fall unconscious during a mission. Let them heal their wounds.</li>
    <li>There's <a href="http://psp.ign.com/articles/748/748359p1.html">a lot to manage</a>: "During your mission briefings, you'll be overseeing seven separate units for your army: Sneaking, Spy, Technical, Medical, Independent, Rookies and Prisoners."</li>
    <li>You can enter a unique Sleep mode which will transfer character data to any nearby PSP that's also in <em>Portable Ops</em> sleep mode.</li>
    <li>There's a mode called "Cyber-Survival," which is turn-based and similar to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/metal-gear-acid/"><em>Metal Gear Acid</em></a> series.</li>
    <li>"Real Combat" is high stakes: if a character dies in multiplayer, they're dead in singleplayer as well. For obvious reasons, Snake can't partake in this mode.</li>
</ul>
Is this too much info for you? Well, don't forget that these are just highlights. The real meat of the stories can be found on <a href="http://psp.ign.com/objects/783/783630.html">IGN</a>. Prepare to never have a life again starting <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HKMG14/002-5813720-7043256?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=prey0f&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creativeASIN=B000HKMG14">December 5th</a>.<br /><br />[<strong>Update 1:</strong> MGS. Just in case you weren't excited enough for this project, Mr. Payton reveals a few nice tidbits that will surely please any PSP owner.<br />
<ul>
    <li>"Single and multiplayer modes are totally integrated, thus prolonging the life of the campaign mode. Online is accessible from the campaign mode for good reason -- players bring one of their 1P Sneaking Units to the online arena."</li>
    <li>"We have a number of Wi-Fi-enabled modes. First off is <strong>Game Sharing</strong>, allowing you to play MPO multiplayer with friends who don't own a copy of <em>MPO</em>." (Yes!!!)</li>
    <li>"The official soundtrack is coming to Japan. It's a forty-four track, beast of a soundtrack. Norihiko Hibino, best known for his composition of the <em>Snake Eater</em> theme, is back with some really cool tracks for <em>MPO</em>."</li>
</ul>
Oh, and two more things:<br /><br /><strong>IGN: Are there plans to port <em>Portable Ops</em> to the PS2, in the event that the game receives poor sales on the PSP?</strong><br /> <strong>Ryan:</strong> Absolutely not.<br /><br /><strong>IGN: Will there be sequels if this proves to be the PSP's killer app?</strong><br /> <strong>Ryan:</strong> Absolutely. If the response to <em>MPO </em>is as good as we're expecting, you can look forward to new chapters in the Big Boss legacy on PSP. We still have many stories to tell about the early years of <em>Metal Gear Solid</em> -- I hope we can continue to do that on PSP.<br /><br />::jaw drops::<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/28/mgs-po-interview-confirms-games-awesomeness/">MGS:PO interview confirms game's awesomeness</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Nov 2006 02:00:00 EST. A few steps away from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/14/psp-fanboy-interviews-sonic-rivals-yosuke-moriya/">Sega's booth</a> at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/digitallife">DigitalLife</a> was Konami's. I got a chance to talk to Matt Knoles, product manager for Konami, and play a few rounds of multiplayer from the upcoming <em>Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops</em>. Although Matt couldn't reveal anything new to you guys, the ability to go hands-on with the game was exciting. Four PSPs engaged in the battle, and I got into the control scheme very quickly. It was relatively simple to move around, lock on and start firing away. It was a great deal of fun, but I worry that the multiplayer may be a bit too shallow. The gameplay was fun, easy to pick up, and graphically very impressive, but at the same time, it felt unrefined. It wasn't hard to find yourself fighting with the camera, and entering first-person view seemed to give you a distinct disadvantage in the game.<br /><br />I <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/30/multiplayer-footage-from-mgs-portable-ops/">previously questioned</a> whether or not controlling the game using the PSP's analog nub would be effective. The answer is: yes. But, I think it will work <em>much</em> better in <em>Portable Ops</em>' <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/08/portable-ops-crucial-to-metal-gear-solid-4-story/">crucial single player story</a> mode, where the pace should be slower, and the game should be... well, stealthier. A slower pace will certainly make the controls much more forgiving. However, the production values of the multiplayer game are so amazing, that I believe that the game should be quite amazing when it comes out in <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000HKMG14?tag=prey0f&amp;camp=0&amp;creative=0&amp;linkCode=as1&amp;creativeASIN=B000HKMG14&amp;adid=1REMCQ8MKTFQR0C8AFP7&amp;">December</a>.<br /><br /><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="1" alt="" id="vimage_1" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2006/10/vd017.jpg" /><br /><em>The PSP met the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_screen_of_death">Blue Screen of Death</a> for this unfortunate player.</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/15/psp-fanboy-hands-on-metal-gear-solid-portable-ops/">PSP Fanboy hands-on: Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 15 Oct 2006 20:10:00 EST. At least, according to <strike>Kevin Bacon</strike> <strike>JJ Abrams</strike> <a href="http://www.weblogsinc.com/tag/kojima">Hideo Kojima</a>. And, in order to fully understand the events of the amazing-looking <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/21/metal-gear-solid-4-in-late-2007-hopefully-new-trailer-for-no/"><em>Metal Gear Solid 4</em></a> on the PS3, you'll have to buy yourself a PSP. The two upcoming PSP-exclusive <em>Metal Gear</em> titles (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/metal-gear-graphic-novel/"><em>Digital Comic 2</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/metal-gear-portable-ops/"><em>Portable Ops</em></a>) will establish the story for the next-gen sequel. "We'd like you to definitely play it [the PSP games]," Kojima was quoted saying. "If you change the <em>Ops </em>story, you have to change <em>4</em>. If you change <em>4</em>, it also becomes necessary to change <em>Ops</em>. Until <em>Ops</em> is finished, <em>4</em>'s story can't be finalized." We'll all get a taste of the <em>Guns of the Patriots</em>' storyline when <em>Portable Ops</em> hits the system in <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000HKMG14?tag=prey0f&amp;camp=0&amp;creative=0&amp;linkCode=as1&amp;creativeASIN=B000HKMG14&amp;adid=1REMCQ8MKTFQR0C8AFP7&amp;">December</a>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://ps3.ign.com/articles/735/735039p1.html">IGN</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/08/portable-ops-crucial-to-metal-gear-solid-4-story/">Portable Ops crucial to Metal Gear Solid 4 story</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 08 Oct 2006 10:00:00 EST. One of the more creative examples <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/22/tgs-06-camera-and-gps-details-revealed/">we mentioned earlier</a> was <em>Hot Shot Golf</em>'s communication with GPS that transforms the game into a personal golf assistant when you're actually on one of Japan's golf courses. <a href="http://plusd.itmedia.co.jp/games/articles/0609/29/news011.html">According to IT Media</a>, this can become the "golf tool of the new age." This will certainly bring in a <em>very</em> unique audience to the world of gaming: golfers, who might pick up a PSP just to get all the golf data they could ever want. (But we wonder, how many people will actually <em>use</em> this functionality? And: will it work on US golf courses?)<br /><br />Of course, <em>Hot Shots Golf</em> isn't the only game using PSP's GPS feature. Read on to see how other software is taking advantage of the device.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/02/the-gps-games-more-details-revealed/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The GPS games: more details revealed</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/02/the-gps-games-more-details-revealed/">The GPS games: more details revealed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 02 Oct 2006 01:00:00 EST.
