Though Jerry Bruckheimer's latest opus, a film adaptation of <em>Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time</em>, wasn't received with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/31/prince-of-persia-movie-opens-with-30-2m-domestically/">commercial fanfare in the U.S.</a> (it's only pulled in about $80 million domestically), it's fared far better overseas. According to <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=princeofpersia.htm">Box Office Mojo</a>, the movie's received worldwide earnings of $293 million, making it the highest grossing game-to-film adaptation to date. <br />
<br />
The previous holder of this prestigious title was the original <em>Tomb Raider</em> film, which currently stands at <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=tombraider.htm">$274 million</a> worldwide. We're overjoyed that <em>Prince of Persia</em> managed to surpass this record -- mainly because, hey, it's about time someone took Jon Voight down a peg or two.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/22/prince-of-persia-becomes-highest-grossing-video-game-based-movie/">Prince of Persia becomes highest grossing video game-based movie</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Jun 2010 16:00:00 EST. <strong>Update: </strong>IMDB has updated its projected totals for the weekend box office to include the Memorial Day holiday, increasing ticket totals of <em>Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time</em> from $30.2 million to $37.8 million for the four-day weekend. The increase pushes the video game-based flick to second place ahead of <em>Sex and the City 2</em>.<br />
<br />
<strong>Original:</strong> If you only considered its current <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/princeofpersia?q=prince%20of%20persia">Metacritic</a> ranking, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia-movie/"><em>Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time</em></a> could be called the first disaster movie of the summer season. According to <a href="http://www.imdb.com/chart/">IMDb</a>, the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced time manipulation romp cracked third place in the US with $30.2 million in its opening weekend, behind first-place <em>Shrek Forever After</em> ($43.3 million) and <em>Sex and the City 2</em><em>: </em><strike><em>Electric Boogaloo</em></strike> with $32.1 million.<br />
<br />
While Bruckheimer may have been wishing for <em>Pirates of the Caribbean</em>-style opening numbers, <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/genres/chart/?view=openings&amp;id=videogameadaptation.htm&amp;p=.htm">Box Office Mojo</a> reports that <em>Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time</em> is the third largest box office opening ever for a video game-based film. <em>Lara Croft: Tomb Raider </em>and <em>Pokemon: The First Movie</em>, currently own the first and second spot respectively in that <em>extremely</em> specific category.<br />
<br />
Internationally the <em>Prince</em> fared better, bringing in $59 million from overseas theaters and <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3i41595b3b7aad282d5b29433fb0603e13">capturing first place</a>. So far, <em>The Sands of Time</em> has earned a total of $87.5 in the two weeks it has been released overseas.<br />

We've seen so many instances where the LEGO toy brand has infiltrated the world of video games over the past few years -- that's why it's so downright refreshing to see the tables get turned. Just past the jump is a commercial for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/16/disney-and-lego-team-up-for-prince-of-persia-toys/">that new line of wonderbricks</a> based on the upcoming film adaptation of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia-movie"><em>Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time</em></a>. It's full of assassins, traps that are ready to spring on a teeny little Jake <strike>Gyllenhaal</strike> Gyllenblock, but, strangely, nary a trace of the slow-motion -- which is so prevalent in the film and games.<br />
<br />
Though your mind may immediately wander to the possibility of a <em>LEGO</em> video game based on Jordan Mechner's action-platforming franchise, we'd like to remind you that LEGO bricks are, in and of themselves, <em>completely rad</em>. LEGO bricks based on one of our favorite game series are doubly so.<br />

Regardless of how unfaithful it might end up being to its ludological source material, or how cheesy its dialogue is, or how poorly its actors perform, it's difficult for us not to get substantially excited by the two <a href="http://www.viddler.com/explore/Joystiq/videos/3153/">behind-the-scenes previews</a> of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia-movie"><em>Prince of Persia</em><em>: The Sands of Time</em></a> we've posted above and after the jump. It looks to be, on all accounts, a Bruckheimer joint -- big, awesome and ... <em>uncerebral.</em> Like a big, clumsy elephant, riding a race car into a tornado made of swords. That's a spectacle we'll gladly drop $10.50 to witness once the film hits theaters May 28.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/13/prince-of-persia-film-sneak-peek-reminds-us-of-our-bruck-love/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Prince of Persia film sneak peek reminds us of our Bruck-love</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/13/prince-of-persia-film-sneak-peek-reminds-us-of-our-bruck-love/">Prince of Persia film sneak peek reminds us of our Bruck-love</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 Apr 2010 13:30:00 EST. Wow, Macs as a gaming platform is totally en vogue this week. First, we've got <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/03/valve-teases-apple-announcement-of-something/">Valve teasing something Apple related</a>. Now, Direct2Drive is holding a <a href="http://www.direct2drive.com/buy-mac-download">sale on all its Mac games</a> ... you know, all five of them. Kidding, there's way more than five. Some big ones in there too, like <em>Dragon Age: Origins</em>, offered at 50 percent off ($33). Other highlights include:
<ul>
    <li><em>Sims 3</em> - $25</li>
    <li><em>Prince of Persia</em> (the latest one) - $25</li>
    <li><em>Command &amp; Conquer: Red Alert 3</em> - $15</li>
    <li><em>World of Goo</em> - $10</li>
</ul>
The sale lasts one week, until March 11, 2010, at 10AM Pacific. Looks like Direct2Drive wants to get one good sales push in before <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Steam/">Steam</a> <em>allegedly</em> comes to Mac.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/05/mac-games-on-sale-at-direct2drive-until-march-11/">Mac games on sale at Direct2Drive until March 11</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 05 Mar 2010 06:00:00 EST. Make no mistake, we're interested in the upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia-movie"><em>Prince of Persia</em> movie</a> for two reasons: Jake and Gyllenhaal. Saying otherwise is just a lie -- for some reason, some of you think <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/16/prince-of-persia-vignette-has-lots-of-shirtless-gyllenhaal-neve/">worshipping the <em>Gyllemonster</em></a> is a <em>bad </em>thing? We don't understand it, but we're not judging<em> you</em>, are we?<br />
<br />
Here on Joystiq, we celebrate the roguish charm of the new wielder of the Sands of Time. Here's the good news: The first images of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/01/jake-gyllenhaal-made-plastic-portable-still-dreamy/">McFarlane Toys' line of action figures</a> based on the upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia-movie"><em>Prince of Persia</em></a> movie have been released, and they don't look half bad. Sure, some of the villains' figurines are sort of dead-eyed, but hey -- that's just a natural side-effect of the angry sand infusion they've undergone. Check out <a href="http://i.toynewsi.com/g/index.php?mode=view&amp;album=McFarlane+Toys%2FPrince_Of_Persia%2FTeaser&amp;pic=4_Inch_Desert_Dastan.jpg&amp;dispsize=600&amp;start=0">Toy News International's gallery</a> to see the rest of the man-dolls.<br />
<br />
Here's the bad news: These figures are only four-to-six inches tall. Even if you're a person of limited stature, it would be impossible to play "Jake Gyllenhaal Fantasy Dream Date" with a four-inch-tall representation of the guy.<br />

We've been doing this Joystiq thing for a while now and, after sifting through years of traffic data, we think we finally know what you're all here for: shirtless Jake Gyllenhaal. It's okay, we're big fans of the guy's pecs, lats, abs, and peclatabs too. As such, we knew we had to post this behind-the-scenes look at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Prince-of-Persia-movie/"><em>Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time</em></a>, not for its juicy interview bits nor to see the picturesque locales where the crew filmed, but for those few seconds of Gyllenhaal in all his shirtless glory. The video is right after the break. <em>You're entirely welcome, internet</em>.<br />

During a recent Ubisoft preview event, Michael McIntyre, director of level design for <em>Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, </em>talked to Joystiq about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia-the-forgotten-sands/">the new sequel</a> to the <em>old</em> trilogy, establishing its connection to the <em>Sands of Time </em>game series and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia-movie/">the Bruckheimer film</a>. <em>The Forgotten Sands</em> is a side story, based in the <em>Sands of Time</em> universe, bridging the seven-year gap between the original <em>Sands of Time</em> game and its sequel, <em>Warrior Within.</em> <br />
<br />
Clearly, Ubisoft has positioned the next game to piggyback on the Bruckheimer blockbuster and ideally generate renewed sales for the brand (which <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/22/ubisoft-prince-of-persia-had-slower-take-off-far-cry-2-nets/">under</a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/27/ubisoft-fiscal-q1-sales-slide-as-ds-market-diminishes/">performed</a> in its 2008 iteration). <em>Forgotten Sands</em> is also an opportunity for Ubisoft to finally justify the Prince's remarkable transformation from carefree hero to brooding, emo <em>warrior.</em><br />
<br />
Continue reading for our full interview with Michael McIntyre -- after the break -- in which he reveals new (and <strike>rewinding</strike> revisited) elements in the game and the return of a familiar voice.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/14/prince-of-persia-the-forgotten-sands-fills-in-gaps-before-warri/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands fills in gaps before Warrior Within; new details revealed in developer interview</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/14/prince-of-persia-the-forgotten-sands-fills-in-gaps-before-warri/">Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands fills in gaps before Warrior Within; new details revealed in developer interview</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 14 Dec 2009 12:00:00 EST. <br /> The first official trailer for Jerry Bruckheimer's <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia"><em>The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time</em></a> is now up for all the internet to see [update: we've added our embedded version above -- and read our in-depth analysis <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/29/impressions-prince-of-persia-the-sands-of-time-the-trailer/">right here</a>]. The long and short of it, it actually looks pretty good. Of course, the trailer is comprised mainly of quick cuts of action and narration filled with cliched adventure story tropes. Then again, as a video game adaptation, maybe that's to be expected.<br /> <br /> Still, there doesn't appear to be anything overtly <em>awful</em> just yet, so the hope is still alive. If Bruckheimer can turn a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pirates-of-the-caribbean"><em>theme park ride</em></a> into a successful film franchise, maybe, just maybe, he can do it with a game too.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/02/prince-of-persia-movie-trailer-looks-kind-of-good/">Prince of Persia movie trailer looks ... kind of good</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 02 Nov 2009 16:30:00 EST. <em>Prince of Persia </em>series creator Jordan Mechner came up with a pretty ingenious way of making sure that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia-movie">upcoming film adaptation</a> of his beloved action-platforming franchise wouldn't diverge wildly from the source material. After the jump you'll find <a href="http://jordanmechner.com/blog/2009/10/prince-of-persia-movie-pitch-trailer/">a trailer which Mechner himself cut together</a> in order to pitch the film to Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney -- a trailer composed exclusively of clips from his well-received game, <em>Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time</em>.<br /> <br /> On his personal blog, Mechner pointed out a number of elements sparsely used in the aforementioned trailer: Time travel, sand monsters, clairvoyant visions -- basically any supernatural plot devices which were apparently cut from the pitch he presented to the studio. Without these aspects, we wonder exactly what the film will focus on. Had they been stripped from the game, it would have been approximately <em>four minutes long</em>.<br /> <br /> [Via <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/10/12/pitching-the-prince-of-persia-movie-using-game-footage/">Big Download</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/13/jordan-mechner-pitched-sands-of-time-film-with-game-derived-trailer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Jordan Mechner pitched Sands of Time film with game-derived trailer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/13/jordan-mechner-pitched-sands-of-time-film-with-game-derived-trailer/">Jordan Mechner pitched Sands of Time film with game-derived trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 Oct 2009 13:00:00 EST. You read that right, folks -- the man most recently penned Jerry Bruckheimer's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia-movie/">film adaptation of the <em>PoP</em> series</a>, among other screenplays. <br /><br />Unfortunately, those attending GDC China won't be getting the traditional, mandatory <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/14/shock-treatment-for-gaming-addicts-halted-in-china/">shock treatment</a> at the show, as that has been recently banned. For shame, China! Hopefully Mechner will be enough.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/12/prince-of-persia-creator-to-keynote-gdc-china-likely-in-english/">Prince of Persia creator to keynote GDC China (likely in English)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 12 Sep 2009 03:00:00 EST. <div align="left">McFarlane Toys has <a href="http://spawn.com/news/news6.aspx?id=13610">announced</a> that it's making a line of collectibles based on Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer's forthcoming <em>Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time </em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia-movie">motion picture</a>. The movie's due out next May, and as fate (or marketing) would have it, so are the toys. <br />
<br />
The toymaker doesn't have anything for us to actually look at yet, but there are plenty of details to be had on just exactly what we can expect to be taking up shelf space at your local toy store / comic book merchant / Jake Gyllenhaal fan club gift shop. <br />
<br />
Unlike many of McFarlane's figures, the 4" and 6" mini-Jakes and pals will be fully articulated. We're not certain, though, if the promised "battle horses" will be as limber. A playset (yep, they still make those) is also in the works, as is something wholly non-action-figure: A replica Dagger of Time, complete with "disappearing sand," LED lighting and -- because safety trumps cool -- a "soft vinyl blade." We imagine it'll be perfect for dealing with "huggable plush sand monsters" and "Tickle Me <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/14/see-ben-kingsley-in-prince-of-persia-movie/">Nizam</a>."</div>

Just when you thought you <em>finally</em> had the Jake Gyllenhaal / <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia-movie"><em>Prince of Persia</em> movie</a> collage <em>absolutely perfect</em>, <a href="http://www.empireonline.com/news/feed.asp?NID=25420"><em>Empire</em> magazine</a> has to go and release shots like the one above. That's right, there he is again. With his shirt open. <em>Sopping wet</em>. Oh, Princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton) is there too (also wet). There's another one with the Prince on horseback too (again with the stupid Princess).<br /><br />But let's face it, the Gyllenhaal shrine will have to be re-done. <div align="left">There's every chance that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia-movie"><em>Prince of Persia </em>movie</a>, like so many game-to-movie adaptations before it, will be tripe. Having said that, the recent <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/21/prince-of-persia-film-posters-look-decidedly-unterrible/">poster reveals</a> - coupled with the news today that a <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_view&amp;newsId=20090721005477&amp;newsLang=en">graphic novel</a> will be released soon after the movie - may be improving our expectations. <br /><br />The book will be written by the creator of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia"><em>Prince of Persia</em></a> series, Jordan Mechner, and will feature cover art by comic book legend Todd McFarlane. Inside, the artwork will be completed by "some of the most talented names in comics," and will feature six self-contained prequel stories. So even if the movie <em>does</em> suck, at least this graphic novel should be worth picking up.<br /><br />The graphic novel will be discussed during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, hosted by Mechner, McFarlane, Bernard Chang, Tommy Lee Edwards and Cameron Stewart, so expect to hear more information out of that.<br /></div>

<div align="left">You know that empty spot on the wall, right above your bed? It's time to fill it. It's been quite some time since we've heard anything from the folks behind the upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia-movie"><em>Prince of Persia</em> movie</a> adaptation. Lucky for us, the film's producer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Jerry-Bruckheimer">Jerry Bruckheimer</a> recently decided to let some footage of the film slip during an interview (found after the break).<br /><br />When asked what <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Jake-Gyllenhaal">Jake Gyllenhaal</a> brings to the film, Bruckheimer says, "Well, he's very handsome." That being said, consider this an early warning for you and your elderly mother -- shot after shot of those stunning pecs and that dastardly smile could result in some unfortunate medical complications. You've been warned!<br /><br />Oh, and as for the movie itself ... we'll just have to wait and see if it's any good when it arrives on<strike> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/08/watch-the-prince-of-persia-movie-on-10-july-2009/">July 10th</a></strike> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/01/prince-of-persia-delayed-a-year-dont-worry-we-mean-the-movie/">not-soon-enough</a>.<br /><br />[Thanks, Sean!]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/10/prince-of-persia-film-footage-shows-up-gyllenhaal-still-dreamy/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Prince of Persia film footage shows up, Gyllenhaal still dreamy</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/10/prince-of-persia-film-footage-shows-up-gyllenhaal-still-dreamy/">Prince of Persia film footage shows up, Gyllenhaal still dreamy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 10 May 2009 17:30:00 EST. Jerry Bruckheimer's latest movie, Confessions Of A Shopaholic, premieres next month and ... wait, where are you going? This might actually interest you. Halfway through the movie you'll be able to catch a glimpse of the poster art for Bruckheimer's 2010 take on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia"><em>Prince of Persia</em></a>. According to <a href="http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2009/01/25/jerry-bruckheimer-debuts-prince-of-persia-poster-within-his-own-film-confessions-of-a-shopoholic/">MTV</a>, the previously unseen artwork shows up during a scene in Times Square and features <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia-movie">Jake Gyllenhaal</a> in full costume. <br /><br />Surely, that's well worth going to see a movie with "Shopaholic" in the title. In a scene half-way through <em><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1093908/">Shopaholic</a></em>, the new <em>Prince of Persia</em> poster - not the supposedly leaked version you see here - will be on display in the background in Times Square.<br /><br />According to the report, the new poster will feature star Jake Gyllenhaal in full-costume as Prince Dastan (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/21/gyllenhaal-freezes-time-becomes-prince-of-persia/">remember</a>, they named him for the film, for some reason). We're happy that we're getting a look at the new poster and all ... but Jerry, you <em>really</em> need to fire your market research team. No, dear readers, we're not charging you for entry to this particular post (though we do hear that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/17/activision-considering-subscription-model-for-guitar-hero-dlc/">subscription-based content</a> is the wave of the future) -- the price we speak of is an intangible one, but a costly one nonetheless. After the break, we've posted a behind-the-scenes look at Jerry Bruckheimer's first foray into game-to-movie adaptations, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=prince+of+persia+movie&amp;invocationType=wl-joystiq&amp;searchsubmit="><em>Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time</em></a> -- a look which is offered through <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOIDMKVwF8E">the mind-numbing lens of Entertainment Tonight</a>. So if you want to get a look at the film's impressive backdrop (which, according to Bruckheimer, is of <em>Lawrence of Arabia</em> quality), you're going to have to sacrifice a few of your lesser-used mental faculties. Seriously, if you have any important long division to do today, we suggest skipping ahead.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/16/get-a-sneak-peek-at-the-prince-of-persia-movie-for-a-price/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Get a sneak peek at the Prince of Persia movie, for a price</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/16/get-a-sneak-peek-at-the-prince-of-persia-movie-for-a-price/">Get a sneak peek at the Prince of Persia movie, for a price</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 16 Nov 2008 14:00:00 EST. You have to hand it to Ben Kingsley: For an Oscar winner, that guy will be in just about anything. It's a well-known fact in the industry that if you say aloud "I've got a bunch of money to make a movie, but where will I find an actor?" Ben Kingsley will, within three to five minutes, appear to you as an astral projection to negotiate his share of the residuals.<br /><br />Now, he's joined the cast of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia-movie"><em>Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time</em></a>, and you can see him in his garb for the film just above (get this: He plays the <em>bad guy</em>). Yeah, his belt looks stupid, but not as stupid as his hair in <em>BloodRayne</em>, so at least he's making progress.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=49649">CS</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/14/see-ben-kingsley-in-prince-of-persia-movie/">See Ben Kingsley in Prince of Persia movie</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Oct 2008 11:15:00 EST. Alright, that was mean of us. Never fear, for the delightful <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia"><em>Prince of Persia</em></a> we fell in love with at E3 is still set for a Holiday 2008 release on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. The one headed to movie theaters, however, has been pushed back a year to May 28, 2010, according to <a href="http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=47479">ComingSoon.net</a>. Reasons for the delay were not made apparent.<br /><br />In case you haven't been keeping up with the project, have at these pertinent <em>Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time</em> facts: <br />
<ul>
    <li>It stars <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/20/jake-gyllenhaal-is-the-prince-of-persia-hollywood-reporter-says/">Jake Gyllenhaal</a>, Gemma Arterton, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/03/alfred-molina-ben-kingsley-join-prince-of-persia-film-adaptation/">Ben Kingsley and Alfred Molina</a>.</li>
    <li>It's produced by Jerry "more 'splosions" Bruckheimer.</li>
    <li>It's directed by a man who's having his assistant play the game.</li>
    <li>It's "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/12/newell-prince-of-persia-not-a-video-game-movie/">not a video game movie.</a>" </li>
    <li>It is a movie based on a video game. <br /></li>

Owned. Literally. The stylized look of the Sin City movie was (and still is) quite iconic. With the second movie <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sin_City_(film)#Sequels">yet to be made</a>, Frank Miller tied up shooting <a href="http://www.mycityscreams.com/">The Spirit</a>, and now <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/ubisoft-acquires-sin-city-effects-studio">the purchasing of the studio</a> that does the effects, just how much influence does that style hold for the future?<br /><br /> After its acquisition by Ubisoft, Hybride Technologies will supposedly continue to work with its movie partners, but will also work on bringing some of Ubisoft's IP's to the big screen. While this does seem quite out of character for a <em>video game publisher</em>, and it seems even weirder considering how <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/20/ubisoft-buys-up-tom-clancy-rights-announces-clancy-mmo/">Tom Clancy happy</a> Ubisoft is, but it does open some interesting doors for that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/21/gyllenhaal-freezes-time-becomes-prince-of-persia/"><em>Prince of Persia</em> movie</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/08/you-like-sin-citys-visual-effects-so-did-ubisoft/">You like Sin City's visual effects? Demented teenager, apocalypse survivor, bubble boy, bottom boi and now the Prince of Persia. Jake Gyllenhaal has been cast to play the title "roll" (tumble, flip) in <em>The Prince of Persia</em> movie adaptation produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, according to <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3if545c66bc7e570547c6373960ca71a37">The Hollywood Reporter</a>. Before the complaining begins, it could've been worse (read: it <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/07/orlando-bloom-lands-lead-in-prince-of-persia-movie/">could've been Orlando Bloom</a>).<br /><br />Gyllenhaal will play Dastan, a sixth century Persian prince who joins up with Tamina (played by nooblet Gemma Arterton) in an attempt to prevent The Bad Guy from using the Sands of Time. Production begins in July, so Jake's got plenty of time for the serious waxing and spray-on tanning necessary for the role.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2008/05/20/breaking-jake-gyllenhaal-is-the-prince-of-persia/">Cinematical</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/20/jake-gyllenhaal-is-the-prince-of-persia-hollywood-reporter-says/">Jake Gyllenhaal is The Prince of Persia, says Hollywood Reporter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 May 2008 17:25:00 EST. <strong>Update:</strong> Well, that's a relief. <a href="http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=43769">ComingSoon.net</a> relays word from Disney that Orlando Bloom has not been cast as the eponymous prince. As for David Zandi ... we're still rooting for you, mate!<br /><br /><em>Original post:</em><br /><br />Just forget about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/17/survey-favors-persian-prince-for-prince-of-persia-role/">focus group-favorite David Zandi</a>; who needs a <em>real </em>Persian prince anyhow? Instead - in what must have been a fevered race to cast the prettiest, and least Persian-looking, male actor working in Hollywood - Orlando Bloom apparently edged out Zac Efron for the title role in Jerry Bruckheimer's mega-budget "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/12/newell-prince-of-persia-not-a-video-game-movie/">not a video game movie</a>" adaptation of <em>Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time</em>.<br /><br />The downside: Bloom's reportedly pulling in $40 million for the role (fun fact: that's $40 million more than any of us will ever see). The upside: We're glad to know there's at least one casting director in Hollywood who probably doesn't disagree with our choice of Woody Allen as Marcus Fenix in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=gears+of+war+movie">Gears of War</a>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.cinematical.com/2008/04/07/orlando-bloom-is-the-prince-of-persia/">Cinematical</a>]<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/prince-of-persia-the-sands-of-time/">Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/prince-of-persia-the-sands-of-time/#171863"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/03/prince_of_persia_movie_c3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/prince-of-persia-the-sands-of-time/#171862"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/03/prince_of_persia_movie_c2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/prince-of-persia-the-sands-of-time/#171861"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/03/prince_of_persia_movie_c1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/prince-of-persia-the-sands-of-time/#171859"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/03/prince_of_persia_movie_c4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/07/orlando-bloom-lands-lead-in-prince-of-persia-movie/">Orlando Bloom not the Prince of Persia [updated]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 07 Apr 2008 16:28:00 EST. Variety reports that mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer has offered director duties for <em>Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time</em> to Mike Newell. Although Newell directed <em>Four Weddings and a Funeral</em> and <em>Donnie Brasco</em>, we're guessing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/JerryBruckheimer/">Bruckheimer</a> is <a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117975541.html?categoryId=1079&amp;cs=1">tapping</a> Newell because of his work with <em>Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire</em>. Newell is currently meeting with Disney studio execs this week and an announcement will probably be made shortly thereafter.<br /><br />The script for <em>Prince of Persia</em> was written by Jeffrey Nachmanoff (<em>The Day After Tomorrow</em>) and PoP creator Jordan Mechner. All we can say at this point is this movie is sounding like a popcorn munching friendly theater experience.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/08/harry-potter-director-offered-prince-of-persia-reigns/">Harry Potter director offered Prince of Persia movie reins</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 08 Nov 2007 14:30:00 EST.
