In actuality, only production of the Neo Geo X Gold Limited Edition model has ceased, which was always part of the plan. You know, it being a Limited Edition product and everything.

"Tommo will be continuing to support the NEOGEO X format going forward with more games, peripherals and software updates, as well as more units of the console hardware," Tommo told Engadget. "The NEOGEO X Gold System Limited Edition Collection Series that includes Ninja Masters, was always planned to be a limited edition product."

Further elaborations were not made concerning what said games and peripherals might be. Considering that the original Neo Geo AES didn't really have peripherals though, save for a memory card and an adapter that let the AES play arcade cabinet cartridges, we're curious about what Tommo might come up with.
Neo Geo X production to continue, more games/peripherals on the way originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 Jan 2013 10:30:00 EST. Shipment of the device has also ceased, meaning that Japan's existing stock of the retro gaming handheld/console is all they're going to get.

It's unclear whether this development will affect the device's availability in North America or other territories, although it has been said that the end of hardware production doesn't translate to the end of software production -- more Game Cards are reportedly on the way. Did you know that every time someone can't find a Wii console to buy, God kills a kitten? Okay, maybe not, but the shortages are definitely costing Nintendo a lot of money. The total adds up to an estimated $1.3 billion, which we're sure Nintendo would like to have in its pocket.

Analyst James Lin of the MDB Capital Group believes that Nintendo could sell twice as many Wiis as it's making each month. Since 1.8 million consoles are produced on a monthly basis, that means Nintendo might be missing out on a heck of a lot of sales. Just because it's not making as much money as it could be, though, doesn't mean that the company is hurting for it. In fact, we think Nintendo will be just fine.

[Via NeoGAF]
Nintendo missing out on $1.3 billion because of shortages originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 19 Dec 2007 20:00:00 EST. Hey, if they are, we haven't seen any of them.

Store shelves are barren, with only a fine film of dust to rest atop their usually proud selves. Online retailers often respond to requests to purchase a console with nothing more than a "404 - You're boned" or "Ha Ha." All searches for the console have come up fruitless, often leaving one in such a sad state that suicide is not only considered, but seen as a better fate.

Well, apparently Nintendo has been manufacturing quite a bit of the beautiful white console that could. George Harrison, who is due to call it quits anytime now, said that the company is pumping out 1.8 million units a month, commenting "We're at a rate now worldwide of about 1.8 million Wiis produced every month, and that's going to sustain itself until we get on top of this." He adds that Nintendo analyzes supply distribution every few weeks, citing that it is an "embarrassment of opportunity."

[Via 1UP]
Nintendo says they're making 1.8 million Wiis a month originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 19 Nov 2007 16:00:00 EST. If you have someone on your gift list that is asking for a Wii console, your best bet is to pretend you never knew them. Or, tell everyone you know one of their most intimate secrets in the hopes that they will no longer be your friend. It's the only way you're going to get out of the difficult task ahead of those brave enough to attempt picking one of the consoles up this season.

In proper spin fashion, Reggie is quick to claim that it isn't merely a production issue, but that the demand for the system is just ridiculously high. Regardless of how he spins it, we know it's a production issue. And, given that how hard it is to meet the demand, isn't it better for a company to not be able to keep up with demand than that of the demand being nowhere near the output of the company?

[Via Joystiq]
Wii will fail to meet demand this holiday originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 01 Oct 2007 16:19:00 EST. The 100 billion yen (about $870 million) deal is reportedly set to finish in a few months and will include the lines for Sony's PS3-powering Cell processor.

Does this mean Sony is giving up on its much-hyped computer-on-a-chip? Not likely -- Reuters says any deal would probably include a Sony/Toshiba joint venture to ensure a steady supply of Cells for Sony systems. The transfer of ownership would provide a cash influx for Sony and probably help Sony cut overhead costs related to staffing and upkeep at the plants.

The move isn't totally out of left field for Toshiba, which helped in the development of the Cell chip along with Sony and IBM and has expressed interest in using the Cell in non-gaming devices
Reuters: Sony in talks to sell chip manufacturing to Toshiba originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 Sep 2007 11:20:00 EST. According to Taiwan component manufacturers, due to the short supply of chips, Nintendo's plan to up the production of Wii consoles worldwide will have to wait until some time later, which will be next year, most likely. Originally thought to alleviate the console drought during the second half of this year, Nintendo is now forced to stand by and wait before kicking their production into overdrive. Regardless of shortages, the Wii has still sold over 10 million worldwide.
Nintendo has to delay production increase originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 17 Aug 2007 12:00:00 EST. Speaking with Bloomberg.com, Nintendo's American marketing chief George Harrison says that production has increased to meet the consistent demand for the console. Nintendo previously stated it expects to sell 14 million Wiis between April and the end of next March.

Harrison says that the company will continue to focus on the non-typical video game player market, which means don't expect to see any Wii upgrades in the near future. He says, "We're starting to see in the performance of the PS3 and Xbox 360 that that's not necessarily motivating the market the way it used to ... So we're going to start work on future technology only when we believe it's necessary.''

"Necessary" meaning profitable. Sure, the Wii may be two duct-taped Gamecubes, but it's selling strong and raising Nintendo's stock price. In other words, it knows how to print money.

[Via Gamasutra]
Nintendo says 35 million Wiis by 2012 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 23 May 2007 16:25:00 EST.
Hope springs again for gamers who just can't bring themselves to drop $600 on a PS3. DigiTimes reports that Sony's blue-violet laser diode manufacturing plant will increase production and this could, "according to Taiwan-based makers of game consoles and components," drop the PS3 price by $100. Now let's see if those savings are passed on to consumers. Despite what Sony says, this magical $100 reduction is being batted around due to tech upgrades in the console and other factors discussed by analysts.

The article also discusses the production cost drop of the Xbox 360. According to research firm iSuppli the cost to manufacture the Xbox 360 is now $323.30, while it profitably retails for $399. The PS3 costs $840.35 to manufacture, in its current state of production, and retails for $599. We'll have to wait to see the NPD sales data later this month to see how well the PS3 sold in April and if more fuel gets added to the price-drop fire. Although, if the PS3 had a game other than Resistance it might be selling better. Oh well, the purchase of a PS3 was an investment in the future, wasn't it? At least the PS2 is still worth every one of the 13,000 pennies it costs to purchase.

Update: DigiTimes used data from last November's iSuppli report and marked it as May data. The comparison of estimated material cost is valid for PS3 and the Xbox 360 in November of '06. Chances are production costs have declined further since. iSuppli plans to do a new cost analysis soon. We knew that Nintendo was looking into expanding production, but could we already see results?

This report is from the end of April, so "next month" probably refers to May. We know-- we're surprised too, but it seems that Nintendo's supply hasn't been sufficient to meet demand.

In a statement given to GamesIndustry.biz, a Nintendo representative said that they are (finally) going to increase global production, with a goal of producing 14 million systems in this fiscal year. Hopefully they don't all end up in Japan! Foxconn, Foxconn ... why does that name sound so familiar? Oh yeah, they're the company that sources said had production facilities that were "insufficient to meet persistent strong sales of the [Wii]" a few weeks ago, leading Nintendo to search for additional production partners.

So, if we're reading this right, Foxconn has enough additional capacity to meet the "strong demand" expected for the PS3, but not enough additional capacity to keep up with the "consistent strong sales" of the Wii going forward. It's a bit circumstantial, but it's enough to make us wonder just how many systems each company is planning on producing for the coming fiscal year.

Read - Foxconn ready for volume production of PS3 gaming consoles
Read - Shakeups expected in Wii and Xbox 360 supply chains
Foxconn production: Not enough for Wii, plenty for PS3? originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Apr 2007 18:25:00 EST. Four months after the console's initial release, it's still unlikely that you'll be able to find a Wii on store shelves.

Up until now, Foxconn Precision Components has been the sole manufacturer behind the Wii's assembly. Nintendo hopes to increase its production by taking on an additional manufacturing partner, researching offers from Asustek Computer, Compal Electronics, Inventec, and Wistron.

It's great that Nintendo is looking to increase the amount of systems it ships out, but how long will it be before we see the benefits of this partnership? Nintendo, remember, had only promised 4 million by the end of the calendar year, and 6 million by fiscal year's end (March 31st). But with all of October and half of November to roll out the units, the figures may jump up even higher. The report claims that Nintendo has at least 7 million planned for Q4 production, and even up to 9 million seems feasible. That's potentially eleven million Wiis by year's end.

It seems that the later-than-expected release date of November 19th was not a result of hardware shortages, but rather to give software developers a chance to properly finish their titles. While all these consoles sitting around, having tea and just waiting for the 19th is a nice picture, it's also important that Nintendo maintain the image of must-have and hard to find. It's a delicate balance, to supply the demand and yet seem like you can't ... hopefully, Nintendo can pull it off.

[via Joystiq]
All kinds of crazy Wii production originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 05 Oct 2006 18:15:00 EST. In addition, "at least 7 mln and potentially as high as 9 mln more units are in the build plan for 4Q06." The report continues, "this production ramp handily exeeds [sic] a publicly announced tgt for 6 mln units to ship by yearend"; however, Nintendo had previously announced plans to ship 6 million units by the end of their fiscal year (ending March 31, 2007) and only 4 million by the end of the calendar year. The language appears to indicate the possibility of building, if not shipping, as many as 11 million Wii consoles by the end of the calendar year!

With production exceeding expectations, why release the console so much later than many anticipated, and right on top of the PlayStation 3's November 17th launch? It all comes down to software. While Nintendo may have warehouses full of Wiis, they need a launch lineup and reliable system software to go along with all that stockpiled hardware. But Zelda has to be done ... we would have been happy with just that, promise.
Wii production exceeding expectations originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 05 Oct 2006 11:45:00 EST. Ron Martino, director of IBM Technology Collaboration Solutions, commented that production fears should be nonexistent as "We have been shipping well within this quarter (July)," and going on further to say that "In fact, we have shipped a significant volume in this quarter."

All well and good, but what about you, the one craving the Wii so bad you've been drawing pictures of it in your notebook, perhaps encapsulated by a red heart with a cartoonish arrow sticking through it reading "Nintendo & Chad 4 Ever?" What does it mean for you?

First off, don't ask how we've seen your notebook. Second, you should be thinking "Well, if Nintendo had these chips since July, why haven't they been manufacturing Wiis?" That last one, we really don't have an answer for.

So would Nintendo go the way Sega did with the Saturn, springing it upon gamers much like that Puma in the first paragraph leaped upon its prey? Probably not, but it makes that event coming on the 14th that much more interesting.
Broadway chip production well underway since July originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 08 Sep 2006 00:01:00 EST. We've heard the rumors for a long time now, but Sony keeps on denying them. It would be great to see if Sony was simply bluffing... but alas, I don't read the language! Two hundred thousand component sets were shipped to Asus in June and over one million are planned for September and October.

This means the hardware has finally been ironed out and that they're ready to get things started. Higher volumes are expected in the coming months, so it looks like their projected 2 million unit launch availability will happen after all. However, those units are going to be stretched thin over many a region, and if demand spikes then we could see a shortage before the end. But we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
Start your engines: PS3's are in production originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 19 Jul 2006 07:30:00 EST. A serious commitment to World of Warcraft, forexample, can leave one with a raid schedule more gruelling than a day job. The boundary blurs elsewhere, too, when youcarry out a complicated task in-game that you couldn't do in real life.

The difference is that by playing agame, you have control over what you do, rather than relinquishing the reins to an employer. Perhaps this will lead tohigher self-employment and entrepreneurship amongst gamers--certainly worlds like Second Life let you workin-game for real cash. A warning, though--once the game becomes a job, the roles may reverse, leaving real life as thefun distraction.
The daily grind: when playing turns into work originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Mar 2006 20:30:00 EST.
