During last night's presentation, Gaikai CEO David Perry talked about the work being put in to ensure the fastest response times for remote play. It's a big part of the PS4 and speaking to Engadget, Sony worldwide studios president Shuhei Yoshida said Sony is requests developers for its new console test their game on Vita using remote play before submitting for certification.

Yoshida said the addition of remote play with the PS Vita means developers can create custom control layouts on Vita. "Some PS Vita games make use of the edge of the screen to add contextual buttons - that works really well, I think, and it's easy to see. So that kind of thing I'd like to see developers do on PS Vita over remote play." Of course, the onus is entirely on the developer, but custom controls for the handheld would be swell.
Sony asking PS4 devs to try PS Vita remote play before submission originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 21 Feb 2013 20:00:00 EST. The result has the player running around an island in between slower enemy bullets, trying to aim those bullets at other bad guys, all the while collecting gems and power-ups.

Sounds fun. There are multiple levels and game modes to unlock as you play the game, which you can open up by collecting more and more gems. Rebel is available right now on any PlayStation Mobile device (including the PS Vita) for $1.99.
Unique shooter 'Rebel' comes to PlayStation Mobile originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 13 Oct 2012 21:00:00 EST. This week during Gamescom, the company released a trailer, as well as a partial track list for the title, which is set to arrive later on this year, exclusively on Sony's newest handheld.

You can find the announced track list after the break - it ranges from the gritty Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson, to the groovy Styles of Beyond and even Mandarin Chinese rapper Shen Yi. That's a positively eclectic selection right there, and Kickbeat will also include a tool for players to create playable tracks from their own music as well. So if that works as planned, there will be no end of tunes to play as you kick a fool's heads in.
Continue reading KickBeat trailer, partial track list revealed at Gamescom

KickBeat trailer, partial track list revealed at Gamescom originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 15 Aug 2012 04:00:00 EST. But aside from some brief gameplay snippets and specific features possible only on the PS Vita, we weren't given much detail.

Thankfully developer Media Molecule just published a lengthy blog post on the subject. Within, the premise of the game is detailed: iota, a cute little paper messenger thing from an alternate dimension, is on a mission to deliver a message to you, the player. Players must team up with iota and "journey through the vibrant papery landscape" to take on enemies and help those in need.

Controlling iota is very reminiscent of other 3D platformers, but with the unique hardware of the PS Vita, players can touch and breathe on and shake their PS Vita to affect the game world. "Tearaway is still very much an extension of the creative gaming genre, so rest assured you'll be able to personalise and customise your world to your heart's content," Media Molecule's Alex Evans assures. "We'll have to be secret Susans about that until a later date though!"

But, hey, as much as we like information, we'd be remiss if we didn't point you to the real value in Media Molecule's blog post: a pdf link to make your own papercraft elk, the very same seen in the gameplay trailer above. We shall call ours ... Tim.
Tearaway takes iota on a journey through PS Vita, our heart originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Aug 2012 17:30:00 EST. The PlayStation All-Stars panel will reveal two more playable characters for the upcoming cross-franchise beatdown.

Additionally, the GT Academy National Finals will be taking place near the convention center in the Gaslight District, complete with a chance for passers-by to join the tournament at the last minute. There'll be plenty of demos on the show floor too, including quite a few PS Vita games. Joystiq will, of course, be in attendance at the show this year, and we'll bring you every crumb of Comic-Con news we can find.
Sony plans Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, PS All-Stars panels for SDCC originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 04 Jul 2012 03:30:00 EST. Promising the "most intense handheld Call of Duty experience to date," the game will have both the Special Ops Story mode and multiplayer gameplay, according to the listing.

In other words, it sounds like what you'd anticipate from a Vita Call of Duty game. There's no studio listed, but it's likely coming from a contracted third-party studio (in the past, n-Space has done most of the mobile Call of Duty titles). We'll look for more information on this soon.

Walmart has a date of December 31 for release, but that's certainly a placeholder. Black Ops 2, on the other hand, is due on November 13.
Rumor: Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified to feature Spec Ops missions originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 19 Jun 2012 19:40:00 EST. The current pricing and memory concerns are the results of "early days."

On price, for example, Gara says that the system is priced as low as Sony could get it on launch day, "not a lot above an iPod and a hell of a long way below a good tablet." Given the hardware included, Gara says Sony "priced it as attractively as we could afford to, frankly," with an eye toward creating a lasting product over the next few years.

Gara also admitted memory is a concern, with hefty downloadable games filling memory cards up quickly. Having learned from the Japanese Vita release, he says, Sony is already securing memory, chips and deals to release bigger cards in the UK, and presumably in North America as well.
Sony VP in UK and Ireland talks Vita pricing, says bigger memory cards on the way originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 Feb 2012 23:45:00 EST. Early adopters can update their systems to firmware version 1.61, which adds a Maps application to the home screen, allows for video recording in the Photos application, and allows for any ratings you make in the PlayStation Store to appear on Facebook. Additionally, the Discoveries screen now lists up to 100 players, as well as the number of times they've been seen.

The Content Manager Assistant app has been updated, and is available now both as a Windows and Mac download. Even if you've got version 1.60 already, you should make the jump to 1.61, as Sony says there are some systemwide performance improvements too. The latest firmware can be downloaded on the console over Wi-Fi, or can be updated from a PC or Mac with the Content Manager Assistant.
PS Vita 1.61 adds Maps app, video recording, and other updates originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 20 Feb 2012 22:30:00 EST. The creator of Disaster Report 4, Kazuma Kujo, may have suffered a small setback when his game was canceled following the earthquake in Japan last year. But it hasn't turned him off of game development for good: he reports via Twitter that his new studio at developer Granzella is hard at work on a new title for both the PS3 and the PS Vita.

Kujo says that the game will be downloadable, though the PSP isn't planned to be supported at this time. It's a completely original IP, he says, but wouldn't tell Twitter followers in what genre it would be.

Granzella is working on at least two titles for the PS3 and the Vita, and this is presumably one of them. Kujo also says he'd like to make a war strategy game at some point, similar to the old R-Type Tactics games, and that he knows followers are looking for a Steambot Chronicles sequel in the future as well. Let's just hope production for all of these goes a little smoother than last time.
Disaster Report creator working on new IP for Vita and PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 04 Jan 2012 06:00:00 EST. Though they may live very far away, our friends in Japan aren't so different from us in the West. Sure, they most commonly mark Christmas with a visit to KFC over a ham or turkey, but at least Col. Sanders and Santa both have white facial hair, and isn't that all that matters?

Look at the Japanese Vita launch sales chart we've placed after the break (courtesy of Media Create), numbered according to their position in the total sales chart. There you'll discover that those in Japan love Nathan Drake just as much as you, making Uncharted: Golden Abyss the second biggest Vita game with 48,224 sold. What's more American than Nathan Drake skipping across the globe and killing the people he meets there? Nothing, that's what.

Of course, when you see that the most popular game is the adorably animated action of Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational, and that the hostess simulator Dream Club Zero Portable beat out the Katamari Damacy game -- well let's just say you'd be forgiven for eyeing that bucket of Original Recipe with some extra suspicion.
Continue reading Hot Shots Golf is best selling Vita game in Japanese launch

Hot Shots Golf is best selling Vita game in Japanese launch originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Dec 2011 20:00:00 EST. We've talked about Sony's new handheld plenty, but we're not a pair of slickly-produced CG commercials now, are we? Sony has announced more details about the beta for the PlayStation Suite. That's the development program (similar to Apple's App Store or Microsoft's Xbox Live Indie Games) which will allow third-party video game developers to produce games that can be released, with Sony's approval, on to the PS Vita and other Sony and Android devices. The beta itself will be launched in "late November," with an SDK available to select developers then, and Sony will refine and clean up the program for a public release at a later unannounced date.

At launch, Sony says the PS Suite content will be available on PlayStation certified devices only, including the PS Vita, and the Xperia line of mobile phones and Sony's upcoming "Sony Tablet" models S and P. Sony specifically mentions that the devices listed are currently only available in the Japanese market, and while it's probably true that we'll eventually see PS Suite content on the North American Xperia Play smartphone (and the Sony tablets, if and when they're released here), that's not yet confirmed.

It's still very early in the process -- it will likely be a while before we see any third-party content up and running (much less available to buy) on these devices.
PlayStation Suite beta starting (for Japanese devices) later on this month originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 16 Nov 2011 07:00:00 EST. You'd think that the PS Vita swooping in to replace the PSP would make for some awkward Christmases at the PlayStation household. But according to Siliconera, the ex and the new wife can talk to each other just fine.

We knew that the Vita would be able download PSP games from the PlayStation Store, but what we're just now learning is that the new device will be able to play AdHoc multiplayer with the PSP in games that support the feature.

Nice to know everyone's getting along; we just hope the Wi-Fi-free PSP is being appropriately shunned.

... you know those cupcakes it brought were store-bought, don't you?
PSP and Vita can talk to each other originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 Sep 2011 16:10:00 EST. One of the two new games Square Enix announced for the Vita (in this case, also for the vanilla PSP), Lord of Apocalypse looks to be another JRPG affair, full of love, loss and betrayal -- at least, that's what we assume. All of this stuff is in Japanese!
The PS Vita will officially be region-free, as tweeted by Sony Computer Entertainment president of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida (@yosp). Asked if it has been confirmed that Vita is region-free, Shuhei tweeted, "Yes, it is." And on the seventh day, there was confirmation.

Vita will drop on December 17 in Japan, at $390 for the 3G model or $325 for wi-fi only -- with no region locks, this means American and European buyers can order the Japanese version and have it before any of their lame, Vita-less friends. And then when those friends tell them to get a life, they can hold up their Vitas and say, "I already have one." And then they'll have no friends, especially if they tell them this joke.
PS Vita is region-free originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 16 Sep 2011 20:30:00 EST. If the short-lived battery built into the PS Vita is a hang-up for you, Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida shared some news with IGN which will either reassure you, or redouble your rage. "If you have not noticed we just announced the peripherals for PS Vita, as well," Yoshida said, "and one of the peripherals is the external batteries. So if you're flying from New York to San Francisco, or vice versa, you have no concerns if you have an additional external battery."

The only thing to be concerned about, it seems, is the cost of such a peripheral. If it follows the price model of the Vita's memory cards, it could be cause for concern, indeed.
Don't worry (or do), PS Vita will have external battery peripheral originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 16 Sep 2011 18:50:00 EST.
Katamari Damacy is coming to the PS Vita and, as you might imagine, the franchise's clearly insane creators have some rather bold ideas about how to implement the handheld's many, many inputs. For instance, the touchscreen will be used to navigate the Prince's sticky sphere around the game's object-strewn environments, while the rear touchpad will "stretch the ball either horizontally or vertically to pick up more objects at once or squeeze through a narrow gap."

We can't wait for more details about the title to surface. You just know the gyroscope is going to have some application, right? Maybe it'll let you control the King of All Cosmos' Royal Rainbows, or maybe it will give you the ability to wiggle the Prince's antenna. Forget it, we're just not thinking crazy enough.
In NIS America's continued efforts to put Disgaea games on more and more platforms, the company today announced that Disgaea: Netherworld Unbound is headed to Android devices later this year. Netherworld Unbound is an Android-optimized version of the original Disgaea game, though NIS says it'll expand on that by selling "characters, items, features, and more."

The Disgaea heading to PlayStation Vita will also be launching in the US sometime in spring 2012. Beyond renaming the subtitle "Absence of Detention" (rather than the original's "Absence of Justice"), the Vita port adds "all-new characters, stories, and game systems."

Beyond the Disgaea series, NIS is bringing "everyone's favorite JRPG with Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune as a weapon," Neptunia MK-II, to the US. Like in Japan, the game will remain exclusive to Sony's PlayStation 3, and it's expected to launch in spring 2012 as well. The company also announced intentions to bring the tentatively titled "Clan of Champions" from Tenchu dev Acquire Corp. to the US, and to both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
You've heard about the "NGV," right? Sony's proprietary media format for the PlayStation Vita? If you haven't, that's totally okay, as Sony hasn't exactly been speaking about it very much. The company didn't actually mention it during its Vita-focused TGS 2011 press conference, or during its similarly Vita-heavy keynote. In fact, outside of a generic version shown off over the past year, we'd never actually seen a physical copy of a game for the upcoming PlayStation Vita.

That all changed this morning, as we spotted the little NGV cards hiding in a glass case at the Sony booth, alongside their housing -- small blue Vita game boxes. Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Gravity Daze, and Hot Shots Golf (Everybody's Golf 6 in Japan) were all on display, as seen in the gallery below. Take a peek, they're adorable!

Gallery: PlayStation Vita NGV (Tokyo Game Show 2011)

Seen@TGS: Physical copies of PlayStation Vita games originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 15 Sep 2011 23:30:00 EST. Sony Computer Entertainment head of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida has a carpet with a little monkey in it. Except the monkey's virtual, and he's using a PlayStation Vita to make the little guy appear. Thus is the Vita's "Markerless AR," an augmented reality application that Yoshida demonstrated with a smile on-stage during Sony's TGS 2011 keynote this afternoon in Tokyo.

Yoshida also had a set of marker cards and "Wide Area" AR to boot, showing off a full-scale game played across a table with a handful of marker cards laid out to assist in the process. Yoshida's demonstration seems to indicate the the Vita will ship with a variety of AR applications when it launches this December in Japan -- perhaps even more than the handful of AR games that Nintendo's 3DS came packed with earlier this year. We'll do our best to nail down some more specifics this week as TGS continues.
PlayStation Vita augmented reality comes in two very different flavors originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 15 Sep 2011 06:00:00 EST. Sony's hardware-based Torne service is heading to the PlayStation Vita, albeit in application form. Sony head of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida introduced the application live on-stage during today's second keynote, demonstrating the ability to navigate television listings, remotely set up recordings, and stream television, all via the PlayStation Vita and its Torne application.

Yoshida never stated an exact release date, but he implied that the application would launch with the Vita in Japan this December. And as you might expect, the application is thus far only slated for the Japanese market.
Torne application on PS Vita allows for remote TV recording and viewing originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 23:55:00 EST. Ever since introducing the PlayStation Suite back in January, Sony has been slowly meting out information on the cross-platform service. But Sony blew out the service this morning during the company's TGS 2011 keynote, revealing that the Suite's software development kit will become available for devs this coming November.

A brief demo of a basic sidescrolling shooter, named "Zero Gravity," was also shown, demonstrating the cross play between PlayStation Vita and the Xperia Play. Unfortunately, no price or exact date was given for access to the SDK, but Sony reps did demonstrate the ease of using the SDK for cross-platform development.

A simple animation was created using a Sony tablet, which was then pushed across a variety of Sony and Android platforms -- "No play, no life," it read. We tend to be more of the "no food/air, no life" crowd, but we'll accept Sony's statement for the sake of demonstration.
PlayStation Suite SDK arrives this November originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 23:03:00 EST. Seven years ago, PlayStation Portable (or PSP) and Lumines were essentially synonymous. If you had a PSP, it was because of Lumines. It may not have been reason enough to spend $250 for Sony's then unestablished handheld but, for any PSP owner, it was an essential part of their collection. I'm not prepared to say that Lumines: Electronic Symphony is reason enough to plunk down $250 (or more) for Sony's unestablished PlayStation Vita, but it's still fun for all the same reasons (and a few more).
The hyper turbo action of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is heading to Vita, and Capcom has seen fit to take some screenshots of the action. There's also a mess of new videos for the console version of the game from TGS.
Continue reading Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 vs. PS Vita screens vs. TGS videos

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 vs. PS Vita screens vs. TGS videos originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 18:30:00 EST. Wondering how you'll set up your PlayStation Vita come ... whenever it launches in the US? Well, it turns out that we've got this handy presentation straight from Sony's TGS 2011 presser earlier today, courtesy of our cohorts at Engadget.

You'll get an idea of how to peel back a virtual page and, um, describe yourself. For instance, how old are you? Do you even know? You look so young!
Here's how you set up your PlayStation Vita originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Sep 2011 03:13:00 EST. Perhaps not as fitting an announcement as Cole McGrath duking it out in Street Fighter X Tekken on the PlayStation Vita, Sony has announced the inclusion of another mascot -- one who's too cute to have its face punched, we might add. Toro, a cartoon character popular in Japan (also known as Sony Cat) has been confirmed for the lineup during Sony's pre-TGS briefing. Kuro, his neighbor in the toons, will also be playable.
Sega of America's Flickr stream teased three images for Super Monkey Ball labeled for PS Vita earlier today. Sega has yet to officially announce Super Monkey Ball for Vita, and it has since removed the images. We assume an eager employee accidentally posted them, or someone was monkeying around the Sega offices.

Sorry. We had to. To apologize, below are the three images, which look extremely similar to previous versions of Super Monkey Ball.
Continue reading Rumor: Super Monkey Ball coming to PS Vita

Rumor: Super Monkey Ball coming to PS Vita originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 11 Sep 2011 17:30:00 EST. You might think it's a privilege to be among the first to develop for a new platform, and you'd be right. You're getting to play with a new toy, plus there's plenty of extra publicity being a launch title. You get to play pioneer for a couple of years!

But, as Escape Plan developer Fun Bits will attest, being the first on a new console also means pressure. Sure, there was the usual "How do we exploit this tech to get the best graphics?" but, on the PlayStation Vita, there's was a whole new challenge: "What are we supposed to do with all these inputs?"
In this age of A/V overload, it's rare that you get the opportunity to really flex those imagination muscles, but today presents just such a chance. Famitsu got its hands on nine Vita games, but since details are scarce on some and we don't know if others will actually come to America, it's the perfect opportunity to revitalize that atrophied fantasizing gland.

A big chunk of the nine were previously announced Ubisoft games (including "Luminous Electronic Symphony," which we assume is the Vita Lumines game). But the magazine also featured some new titles like Game Arts' Ragnarok Odyssey, a "hunting action" game that borrows elements from MMORPG Ragnarok Online and, presumably, the Monster Hunter series. Also, D3's bringing Dream Club Zero to the portable, but since it's a port of a 360 dating sim/visual novel that will never, ever come to the U.S. you probably don't want to waste too much imagination on that one.

Perhaps the most intriguing on the list is Acquire's Sumioni, a 2D action game with an inky art style (as you can see in the screen Siliconera ran). Apparently, you'll use both touch pads and an analogue stick to brush away enemies with your ... magical, brushy, ink powers. (C'mon, imagination!)
Rounding out the list is Moe Moe Daisensou Gendaiban++, the latest in a strategy series that mysteriously hasn't caught on in the US.
Famitsu reveals new Vita games originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Sep 2011 17:45:00 EST. A Ninja Gaiden game for PlayStation Vita remains an immaterial idea while Team Ninja gets Ninja Gaiden 3 ready for its 2012 launch. The developer has received a PlayStation Vita system to test and eventually chop in half mid-air, in an incredibly expensive variant of Fruit Ninja, but hasn't progressed beyond the consideration phase.

"We've received a PlayStation Vita system and are thinking about it," said team lead Yosuke Hayashi in a recent PlayStation Q&A. "Having said that, right now we're focused on Ninja Gaiden 3 for PS3, and after that's complete we'll start to look at ideas such as bringing out Ninja Gaiden on PS Vita because of course we'd like to expand the series."

Alright, let's toss in another concept tinged with "of course." Beyond the Wii U port (and planned 3DS game), Team Ninja will need some way to sell at least one more iteration of its latest Ninja Gaiden game. A Vita port mashed up with a Greek letter seems like a solid alpha bet.
Team Ninja will consider Vita game following Ninja Gaiden 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 27 Aug 2011 17:30:00 EST. Here's one to be filed in the verbose category of Games That Are Unlikely To Leave Japan But Contain Items That Suit Our Interests. Konami announced AR Combat Digi Q, an online tank combat game that relies on the PlayStation Vita's incredible capacity to augment reality itself. Or, you know, a neat camera-based game.

According to Andriasang, the Konami-published title is derived from its own line of infrared-controlled combat toys (read an insanely detailed review here). The Vita's analog sticks act as the remote control and the miniature vehicles are replaced by polygonal representations on-screen, placed atop whatever background is in view of the camera. That might be a few too many layers of abstraction if you just wanted to drive a tank like Pierce Brosnan did, but at least it cuts down on toy litter in the living room.

Speaking of toy litter: Isn't it about time someone brought back Re-Volt?
Command tiny radio-controlled tanks in Vita AR game originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 26 Aug 2011 04:10:00 EST. Resistance: Burning Skies protagonist Tom Riley is having a rough day. He awakes at Ellis Island to find himself alone in a stretcher, an IV still embedded in his forearm, while a massive alien attack wages on all around him. Other than his handy fire axe and helmet, Riley's ill-equipped to take on enemies, nonetheless a swarm of Chimera who are hellbent on recovering their stolen technology from the human resistance.

But this is a game, after all, so I pilot Tom towards the nearest exit -- a planked up doorway which looks ripe for the axing. Success! I couldn't help but notice in my exploration of Resistance: Burning Skies' opening room that the game looks much improved over the series' previous portable spinoff on PSP. Textures are more detailed, colors are more varied, and environmental effects actually exist. While the game is certainly early (Chimeran faces resemble little more than goofy flat paper masks at the moment), it showed a lot of promise. And maybe more importantly, it demonstrated to me that the PlayStation Vita's twin analog sticks are more than sufficient at delivering shooters on the portable.

Gallery: Resistance: Burning Skies (Gamescom 2011)

Continue reading Resistance: Burning Skies preview: One axe, two sticks

Resistance: Burning Skies preview: One axe, two sticks originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 22 Aug 2011 15:30:00 EST.
In this video, Konami producer Tomm Hulett explains the premise of the PlayStation Vita's weird spin-off game, Silent Hill: Book of Memories. "You receive a strange book. When you open it, you see your entire life story written on those pages," he said. "All your memories." You can then rewrite your memories and alter reality.

Apparently, judging by the gameplay, all the player-created characters then rewrite their lives as monster-filled nightmares -- with Hulett suggesting that even Pyramid Head shows up. In any other game, that would be weird, but it wouldn't be Silent Hill if the protagonist wasn't totally bonkers.

Speaking of gameplay, the above video features the first (early) direct-feed gameplay footage.
Silent Hill: Book of Memories is really about a book of memories originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 19 Aug 2011 10:30:00 EST.
