Unlike the "regularly scheduled maintenance," the PSN will go completely dark, signing out anyone online for the duration of the maintenance.

There will be no access to the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home, account services nor play online. The PlayStation Twitter is expected to give the clear when the maintenance is complete.

The PSN update is mostly about fast cars and deep discounts this week. Burnout Paradise is a mere $8 now, with many of its DLC packs slashed to $2. Not to be outdone, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit packs have also been reduced by almost half.

Okay, now it's just too quiet. The PSN update is lean this week. There's the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow "Resurrection" DLC, a nice discount on Bionic Commando: Rearmed 1 & 2, a Virtua Tennis 4 Move demo and some other random goodies. Overall, though, not a major update.

However, despite the lack of content in this week's update, we definitely hope you've picked up your free games and free PlayStation Plus membership from the "Welcome Back" program by now. July 3 is the deadline, so don't dilly-dally if you haven't grabbed them.

You hear that? Listen ... it's almost calm. Almost normal. The regularly scheduled PSN update returns this week, following an extended hiatus that manifested itself in a content deluge slightly before E3 and throughout the week of gaming madness.

There are plenty of things to check out in this update, but it's probably worth repeating that you should grab those free games. Free games? Yeah, the free games and free PlayStation Plus membership you get as part of the "Welcome Back" program. You've only got until July 3, so get it out of the way now.

Bulletstorm's new Gun Sonata DLC, out today for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Epic's balls-to-the-wall (literally!) FPS, should help satisfy that primal need.

The pack, well, packs two new Echoes mode maps (Guns of Stygia and Crash Site) along with three more locales for Anarchy mode (Hotel Elysium, Sewers and Villa) for the sum of 800 Microsoft Points / $10 on Xbox Live and PSN, respectively. The content is up on XBL now and will hit PSN with its weekly update this evening. As for the PC version, EA tells us it's still planned, just without a firm release date at this point.

This week's PSN update adds two very different type of arcade titles: Red Faction: Battlegrounds is the vehicular combat game that somehow ties into the Red Faction universe. Don't think about it too hard, just drive around for $10 and blow stuff up. Meanwhile the Move-supported StarDrone is a hybrid pinball / brick-breaking game. Check out the videos for a better idea.

It should also be noted that the excellent Lara Croft: Guardian Of Light is 50 percent off for $7.49. Also, the phenomenon that is Angry Birds has come in step on PSN with its iOS cousins, as the game is available now for $1.99 instead of $3.99

Sony Online Entertainment's Free Realms MMO finally arrives on PS3 today. We really don't have much to say about the free-to-play hit, but it gives us a fantastic excuse to post a picture of purple horse with wings.

Another big arrival today is Moon Diver, which at one point was called Necromachina, but before that was known as ... Moon Diver. Anyway, original point: it's like a four-player Strider. Considering it was designed by Kouichi Yotsui, one of the leads on Strider, that makes the lift kosher in our book.

For something with a bit more machismo, the demo for WWE All Stars is available, along with Castlevania: Lords of Shadow's "Reverie" DLC. Konami kinda just snuck that release in this week for the States, but it should be available in Europe on March 30.

That doesn't appear to be the case with PSP's sucessor, the NGP, based on comments made by SCEE president Andrew House.

"One thing we learnt from PSP, is that we want to have simultaneous delivery in digital and physical for NGP," House told MCV. "Just to clarify that, all games that appear physically will be made available digitally."

While that's certainly positive news, we're still waiting on word about Sony filling in the gaps on downloadable PSP back-catalog games -- which will run on the NGP, some with patched-in support for the handheld's second analog stick. Then there's the matter of the system's proprietary flash storage media, needed to store downloaded games, being a bit fuzzy. In short: Sony still has a lot to explain about its powerful new portable.

 This week's PSN update adds The UnderGarden and Bionic Commando: Rearmed 2, two titles that didn't review all too well on our little corner of the internet. Although, not all is lost, if you somehow missed out on playing one of the best games of 2009, Assassin's Creed 2 is available for $30. The "Deluxe Edition" includes the core game along with all the DLC.

Check out the Fight Night Champion demo if you're looking to play something punchy. The full PSN update can be found after the break... and please try to ignore the crickets hanging out in the PSP section.

 You know her. You adore her. You may barely remember her name, but you'll never forget the face of "Dead Space Girl." If you don't plan on picking up Dead Space 2 for PS3, which includes Dead Space Extraction, you can still grab the Move-controlled port of this on-rails shooter by downloading it from PSN for $15 today -- or try the demo for free.

If you're looking for something just as bloody as Dead Space, but half as mature, there's also the Bulletstorm demo. It's definitely worth a test drive, if only for the simple experience of tossing a futuristic lasso on a bad guy, yanking him toward you in slo-mo, shooting him a couple times in-process, and then kicking him full-blast into some spikes.  *BOOM* Our top game of 2010 hits PSN. Mass Effect 2 is available now to download through the digital distribution network, but don't expect to be playing it right away. The title is 12 gigglebytes, which means if you start downloading now, you'll be lucky to finish before the Honolulu sunset. Thankfully, the game is also available at your local retailer in disc form.

If you're feeling particularly old school, the original Mega Man is also available. There's also the Simon Pegg-voiced game Spare Parts. Check out the full PSN update after the break.
