PixelJunk Eden is a simple concept boosted by its visuals, sound and co-op gameplay. Much like PixelJunk Monsters, Eden's simplicity in design hides a surprising amount of depth and Q-Games' PixelJunk brand now adds one more feather to its cap, presenting another piece of stand-out quality on the PlayStation Network.

We actually played Eden with the game's producer, Deb Mars, who, despite having shown off the game for the umpteenth million time, either has the patience of Solomon, or actually genuinely enjoys introducing people to Eden. As she went through the basic gameplay it was easy to understand and gave a good sense that, much like PixelJunk Monsters, Eden really shines when it's played with a friend.

Gallery: PixelJunk Eden

From the videos we'd seen, the game certainly is beautiful and has its own art style, but we had no idea what was going on. So, here's the deal: Players control a high-jumping creature called a Grimp, which can stick to surfaces and shoot out a tether (similar to the ninja rope from Worms). The object of the game is to collect spectra scattered around the 10 levels in the game. Once a level is completed, a new plant will grow in your garden, allowing access to the next stage. Your garden is actually the main menu screen so you'll automatically get a visual representation of your progress every time you start the game.

The way to get to the Spectra is by busting open sacks of pollen, swinging around radially using the tether to collect as much pollen as possible, which will collect in a nearby seed. When a seed is full, it's just a matter of jumping in the seed and a plant will grow. Hopefully this will get the player closer to collecting the spectra on the level.

Locating spectra is as simple as using the tether to swing around in a circle. The trail left by the circular motion will ping like a radar showing the direction of the closest spectra, but players can't just keep swinging around forever as the tether will break and the player falls. Grimps can also stick to each other, so if a player is falling, with quick reflexes another person can shoot out on the tether and rescue them.

Falling doesn't kill in Eden. In a single player game the camera just follows the player's Grimp as it drops down, while in multiplayer if one of the teammates falls, their Grimp will respawn right next to the player still on the screen. Players will fail a level by running out of time, but there are plenty of items on a level to extend the time limit, represented by bars in the bottom left of the screen.

The controls are quite intuitive and after about five minutes the controls and physics of the game become clear. Left analong controls direction, double tapping X is jump, just X will jump and stick a tether to a spot for swinging and R2 reels in the Grimp on the tether, giving a little more time before the rope breaks. The tether doesn't just stop working, if you know you can't make a jump on the pass you believe the rope will break, just reel in and try again. Also, a quick jolt of the controller will cause the Grimp to just go straight down for more precise jumps. It's the only time players aren't at the mercy of the game's physics.

Eden really works when players are just enjoying the atmosphere of the game and the company it's being played with. The game shines in co-op and doesn't punish players heavily for failing. If the other person you're playing with falls off the screen, they'll just respawn right next to you. Eden is low on stress and high on just having a enjoyable time.

PixelJunk Eden will release July 31 on the PlayStation Store and we've been told it is expected to cost about $10 for the full game. The soundtrack will be released at a later time. We personally can't wait to play this game again.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

PS3 video store not coming to PAL regions in 2008

PS3-owning movie buffs across the globe were exuberant upon the unveiling of the PlayStation Network's video delivery service, and the announcement that it would be made available, well, now. Unless, of course, you live in Europe, Australia, or one of the many other PAL regions of the world -- according to Sony Europe exec David Reeves, Sony won't be getting their Blockbuster on in PAL territories in 2008.

Reeves promised that "dates and content for the video download service will be announced later this year," somewhat ensuring a lengthy delay. However, he did mention the launch of Go!View, the recently released European television and movie download service for the PSP, as something of a consolation. We would have preferred a promise to exclude any films written and directed by the Wayans brothers from the service's PAL incarnation.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joystiq eyes-on: Fat Princess

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Action

The easiest way to describe Fat Princess for PSN is to say it's Team Fortress 2 populated by demented My Sims. It's a multiplayer "capture the flag" game, except that the flag is a princess who is more difficult to carry back to base the more the opposing team feeds her cake, which magically grows in the forest around the castle.

The action takes place in a colorful fantasy land where opposing teams need to reach the other's base, grab their princess and get back to the castle. The princess will lose the weight if she's not constantly fed, so if a team focuses on just combat instead of feeding the princess, the opposing team will have an easier time carrying her away once they inevitably infiltrate the castle.

Gallery: Fat Princess

Sony's producer for the game tells us Fat Princess was a last-second addition to the company's E3 line up, but we're glad it was there. Although the game is quite charming and we were hoping to hear a release date for this year, it's being developed by brand new developer Dark Star, which doesn't expect the game to be finished until 2009.

Fat Princess is expected to support up to 32-players in online competition. The host will be able to choose the number of combatants that can enter a match and customize the conditions for victory. An offline single player match will be possible with AIs, while offline multiplayer is still being worked out with no determination on how it'll work.

Each player starts with a basic character and putting on one of the hats scattered about the base will turn it into a Worker (Engineer), Swordsman, Archer, Wizard or Priest. The classes we saw were easy to understand. The Worker builds doors for the castle, creates fire pits for Archers to light their arrows and various other skills. The Archer shoots, the Swordsman is the tank, the Wizard uses ranged spells and the Priest deals out the healing.

Although we didn't get to play it, the controls are pretty basic with buttons assigned to attack, jump, pick up and alt-fire. This isn't a totally cute cartoony game as characters will drop copious amounts of blood when attacked.

A lot about Fat Princess can change between now and 2009, but from what we saw there is a charm to the game, which could make it very enjoyable for those looking for a different kind of Team Fortress 2 experience.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

PSN Thursday: Rayman, Elefunk and E3

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Sony PSP, Online

We noticed a lot of you asking about WipEout HD's whereabouts, so we corned SCEE's Charlotte Panther in the Sony room and demanded an explanation. Apparently, WipEout is still in development to add "extra features." We somehow managed to get Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi to slam on his brakes for a moment today and talk to us about his flagship racing franchise. According to the Polyphony Digital boss, his studio is focusing a majority of its efforts on Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. In fact, he confirmed that the proper, disc-based Gran Turismo 5 might not even roll out before 2010.

In the meantime, Polyphony will continue to expand Prologue with additional cars, tracks, and features. Yamauchi couldn't speak to specific plans, but mentioned that an new update is planned for the near future.

With all of the work his company is putting into the next console GT installment, Yamauchi tells us that it hasn't forgotten the long-delayed Gran Turismo 4 Mobile for PSP. He confirms that the game - originally announced at E3 2004 - is still actively in development, although it isn't planned for release until after GT5. That would be 2011 for those with pen and calendar in hand.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

PSN update adds Sony press conference, new videos

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Sony PSP, Online

Following a discussion of Siren, we asked Sony Worldwide Studios pres Shuhei Yoshida about development of the not-quite-funny episodic comedy series Rat Race for the PSN. Yoshida laughed, telling Joystiq: "You have good memory. Yeah, maybe I talked about episodic games and that's my fault. So, yeah, we stopped it. We really liked the concept; it's like The Office TV series. It was kind of funny but we were not quite happy with how the game was turning out and there was some difficulty in development."

So, for those of you cursed with a penchant for terrible comedy, you'll probably want to dull the pain with yet another episode of Two and a Half Men. The rest of you? Keep an eye out for the remainder of our interview with Yoshida.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

PSN Thursday: Special E3 Tuesday edition

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Sony PSP, Online

Q-Games' wildly colorful and inherently trippy PSN title, Pixeljunk Eden, has been confirmed for a July 31 release on both the US and Japanese PlayStation Network. The downloadable game, which has captured plenty of attention thanks to a unique art style and mellow gameplay, is the third 2D game in the popular PixelJunk series.

Gallery: PixelJunk Eden

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sony mentions new PSN titles at press conference

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Online, Casual

At their E3 press conference today, Sony announced a few new titles for PSN. And when we say they announced the titles, we mean exactly that ... they announced the titles, and practically nothing else, save for some quick video footage. The titles include:

Crash Commando

Fat Princess

Pain: Amusement Park

Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fists of Plastic

These titles join the previously revealed PixelJunk Eden, Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty, Siren: Blood Curse and Flower among the PSN games mentioned at the conference. More on all these titles as we hear about it.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

PSN's video content is "open for business to all studios" tonight

Filed under: Culture, Sony PlayStation 3, Sony PSP, E3, Video

This week's PSN update brings the Rainbow Six Vegas 2 update, Ape Escape Academy for PSP and several new demos and videos. Step right this way 360 owners, past the bearded woman, under the tent flap and into "Bizarro World!" In this world, 360 versions of things are always delayed, while PS3 players get to enjoy them first. Look, over there! That's a PS3 owner enjoying the new Burnout Paradise update "Cagney" today, and you've got to wait for it! And not just a few days like we originally thought! No, Criterion's now saying you're going to be waiting until at least July 24! The terror!

And look, over there, it's ... actually, that's the only exhibit we've got, sorry folks. Capcom's World War II shoot-em-up 1942: Joint Strike is set to launch the week after E3, July 23 for Xbox Live Arcade and the day after for PlayStation Network. It will cost 800 MS points (US $10), according to a press release. The game is yet another HD remake for Capcom, after giving similar treatment to Super Puzzle Fighter II and Super Super Street Fighter II.

Developer Backbone Entertainment went the extra mile, however, in creating new backdrops, levels and enemies. The game features a new score by frequent Metal Gear Solid contributor Norihiko Hibino. What hasn't changed? It's still a shoot-em-up, so for better or worse, you know exactly what to expect.

Gallery: 1942: Joint Strike (XBLA/PSN)

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sony feels your pain, prepares more PAIN

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Action, Online

The guilty pleasure that was is PAIN for PS3 is finally getting some substantial new content. By "substantial" we mean a new level - which will join the game's only level - called "Uncle Jimmy's Fun Spot Amusement Park." Sony and developer Idol Minds reckon it's more of an abusement park (their pun, not ours) and it's bringing more than just fresh scenery to the game.

Slated to arrive "this summer," the PAIN Amusement Park add-on will introduce new player-requested features, including online multiplayer and PlayStation Trophies. These are in addition to the abundance of added moving set pieces you can see in the above video. Looks like in the case of PAIN and new content, it does hurt to ask.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rumor: PS3 firmware 2.41 up by 'midweek'

A "customer support" representative for Sony has reportedly informed CVG that firmware version 2.41 for PS3 should be available "midweek." Sony has not made an official statement about when version +.01 will be available, but we've sent carrier pigeons to their offices to peck on the windows until we get a response.

Sony has gone dark on the issue since July 2nd, presumably as it tries to figure out why some consoles had adverse reactions to the 2.4 upgrade. We'll update as soon as we receive a response from Sony.

Gallery: PS3 Firmware 2.40

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Siren: Blood Curse priced, dated for Europe - £19.99, July 24th

If there's one thing that we want to know about Siren: Blood Curse it's what's it going to cost us to play. You see, while Sony is releasing the game in Japan in both downloadable and Blu-ray formats, it's straight up "episodic" on PlayStation Network for both the European and North American markets. While we don't have the price for North American gamers just yet, ThreeSpeech says the European version will be £4.99 (about $10) for a "chapter" containg three episodes, or £19.99 (about $40) for all four chapters. (Sorry, no prices in Euros).

If there's two things that we want to know about Siren: Blood Curse, it's the cost (see above) and when we're going to be able to play it. ThreeSpeech says all four chapters will be released on July 24th in Europe, meaning you could just buy the whole thing on day one or, alternatively, buy each chapter as you get to it. Don't like the first chapter? Don't buy any more. Don't have time to finish the game right now? Buy the rest when you're ready; it's the same price either way. A novel concept, but we can't help but want a Blu-ray release alongside it, what with our PS3s filling up and all.

Gallery: Siren: Blood Curse

[Via PS3 Fanboy]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
