Rumors about yet another iteration of the PlayStation Portable have been gaining momentum, some pegging it as a "PSP2," while others suggest an incremental update, a la the PSP Brite. Yesterday's claim by Shiny founder Dave Perry -- he knows someone who knows all about the new PSP and it doesn't have a UMD drive -- has been presented to and waffled at by Sony itself.

Interviewed by MTV Multiplayer, John Koller, who heads up SCEA's marketing of PSP, said that he "Can't comment either way," but did add, "I will reiterate that the digital component is very important to us. That's all we can say at this point."

Perry referred to the ostensibly new PSP model as a "fully digital online device;" one that would forgo UMDs in favor of downloadable, digitally distributed software. That said, Koller's comment already has us putting together our E3 2009 bingo cards.
Sony doesn't say 'no' to UMD-less PSP originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 Feb 2009 21:15:00 EST. The latest PSP firmware update -- dubbed version 5.03 -- should be making its way onto your portable pal soon. According to Sony's blog, the update "improves system software stability during use of some features" and continues the trend of ambiguously altering unspecified thingies.

More specific are the accompanying patch notes, which highlight the squashing of "security vulnerabilities in the system software." It seem likely that the infamous Gripshift exploit, which allowed the PSP-3000 to run homebrew application, has been eradicated. Where will the next buffer overflow come from?

[Via PSP Fanboy]
PSP Firmware 5.03 addresses 'security vulnerabilities' originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 Jan 2009 12:10:00 EST.
There haven't been many color variations of the PSP-3000 series yet. That is, until now. Sony Asia has just revealed two new colors: Radiant Red and Vibrant Blue. Both models are part of a new series called "Carnival Color." No word on whether if these colors will make it to other territories. Famous for its imperviousness to hackers, the PSP Brite has now been hacked by one MaTiAz over at lan.st. An exploit was supposedly found in the 2005 title GripShift and has been described as "a buffer overflow vulnerability when loading savegames [sic]." It is now available for download, as well as an accompanying new SDK. Remember however, this exploit doesn't grant the all-important kernal access. A video of this proof of concept in action, after the jump.

[Via Engadget]
Continue reading Exploit that works on the PSP Brite found in GripShift

Exploit that works on the PSP Brite found in GripShift originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 17:15:00 EST.
We hope you're content with the current PSP, scanlines and all. While most hardware makers have historically begun R&D on their next generation platforms just as - or even before - the current generation is hitting shelves, SCEE president, David Reeves, has said that Sony is not currently planning a PSP 2.

Interviewed by MCV, Reeves admitted that, "there are currently no plans for a PSP2," adding, "I go to Tokyo quite a lot and no one has referred to it - I think they have their hands full at the moment."

Reeves also addressed the thorny issue of PSP software (or, more specifically, the lack thereof), saying, "[PSP's] weakness...is its software." PlayStation's European boss chalks the situation up risky business, explaining of developers that "when it comes to placing their bets, have to choose PS3 and 360, then Wii, then DS, maybe even PS2 before PSP." He did not offer any details of how Sony is (hopefully) working to change this. Mr. Reeves, sir, you're not exactly instilling us with confidence.

Speaking to MTV Multiplayer, SCEA hardware marketing boss John Koller admitted that piracy of PSP software is still very much a concern to the company, but that it's been less severe in recent weeks. "It's trending down right now, we've seen the piracy not be as prevalent in the last month to two months," Koller told the site, adding, "But it has been a problem for us."

SCEA president Jack Tretton pointed to piracy as a chief factor in weak PSP software sales during E3. Looking at the past two months' worth of releases for the handheld, though, one would have to imagine that the decline in piracy can be attributed to the fact that there have been no recent, major PSP titles to, well, pirate. In fact, the holiday season will be devoid of a single new, triple-A year-end title for PSP ... something that has to be worrying Sony more than pirates right about now.

A small update on the PlayStation Blog could mean big-ish things for the PSP homebrew scene. SCEA's Eric Lempel reports that PSP firmware 5.02 is due soon, and that it "improves system software stability during use of some features, including the PlayStation Store." Which, as all conspiracy theorists know, is code for "We're going to break your custom firmware."

Of course, for the majority of PSP owners, there will likely be some actual improvements to system stability. It didn't take long now, did it? As of last month, hackers and pirates have yet to to find a way to run custom firmware on the latest iteration of the PSP. Well, things have changed. Datel has unveiled to the world a "special mode battery" called the Lite Blue Tool which allows the PSP Brite to enter service mode. Once in service mode, you're home free, baby -- you can downgrade to the firmware version of your choice. The "crypto processor based battery" even has a built in LED power gauge and will sell for $29.99 come November 28th.

[Via Engadget]
PSP Brite isn't impervious to hackers originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 19 Nov 2008 13:00:00 EST. Out with one SKU, in with another. The 4GB PSP Entertainment Pack may be dead, but in its place is the Ratchet & Clank Entertainment Pack. Wait, what? Yes, looks like Sony is offering two versions of the R&C pack -- the current one offers a silver system and echochrome. The one releasing in December will include a black system and Everyday Shooter. If you still had any doubt over Apple's plans to launch an assault on the portable gaming industry, VP of iPod and iPhone Marketing Greg Joswiak has made the company's intentions a bit more obvious. In an interview with T3 magazine, Joswiak touts the iPod Touch as the "future of gameplay" (and notes that current handhelds, PSP and Nintendo DS, are "in the past").

Beyond the interface and the wireless App Store, Joswiak said, "The 3D graphic power here [iPod touch] is significantly greater than what you have here [picks up Nintendo DS]. So this allows people to do significantly higher quality games."

It all sounds well and good, but Joswiak doesn't address the pink, polygonal elephant in the room: the games themselves. The platform and hardware is great, but Apple's catalog doesn't yet have the muscle nor brand recognition that's driving sales of the PSP and the Nintendo DS (whose Wrestling name, we might add, is "The Money Printer").

It's worth noting that a recent study by the NPD Group suggests smartphone (and particularly iPhone) gaming is growing dramatically. Out of all the frightening images we've been subjected to this Halloween, this one easily ranks as the most terrifying. It's an intensely intimate view of the PSP Brite (or PSP-3000 if you want to get all technical) and the screen that's drawn some disapproving squints in recent weeks.

The folks at Logic-Sunrise have apparently peered at the brighter screen (magnified by a factor of 40), pinning the blame for the perceived interlacing issue squarely on our ex-friend, the now horizontally lined, observable darker blue pixel. Oh, when we're done with you, pixel, you'll be all shades of black and ... well, blue.

[Via Engadget]
Face to interlace: Up-close view of PSP Brite originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 31 Oct 2008 18:00:00 EST. It was unlikely the PSP would trump its awesome sales of nearly 160,000 units last week. Nevertheless, the PSP is once again on top, selling 60,467 units. Unfortunately, Sony's high-def console the PlayStation 3 was dead last, selling an abysmal 3,931 units. Look on the bright side though: during this week, Sony's current-gen hardware outsold all its competitors current-gen hardware combined.

Hardware and software sales for the week of October 20th - October 26th:

Sony's latest hardware revision, the PSP-3000 aka PSP Brite, is doing well in standing up against pirates, hackers and their tools. According to PSP World, previous exploits which allow access to kernel memory and firmware are now patched up -- no way getting in there now.

Infamous hackers like Dark Alex have yet to find a way through the PSP Brite's new specs. Other hackers are getting frustrated; take Royginald from the Philippines who has swapped in the PSP Slim's CPU into a PSP Brite while keeping the screen and case intact. All that to run custom firmware and homebrew which doesn't even run properly because of signal output differences. We wonder if Sony has finally found a solution to its custom firmware woes.
PSP Brite is impervious to hackers originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 30 Oct 2008 12:30:00 EST. Already have Echochrome on PSP, Ratchet & Clank Size Matters on UMD, as well as the DVD and Blu-ray release of National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets? Yeah, us too (except for the National Treasure 2 part ... seriously, what's your problem?), which is why we're drinking early this morning. Sony's John Koller reports, via the PlayStation blog, that Sony has decided to nix the so-called PSP-3000 Core pack in favor of just one option: the already available Ratchet & Clank Entertainment Pack.

The Core Pack was to be released in November with a 4GB Memory Stick (a boost from the R&C pack's 1GB stick), an Everday Shooter PlayStation Network voucher and, of course, a PSP Brite in sleek "Piano Black" instead of "Mystic Silver," all for the same $199.99 asking price. If you're really just waiting for a black PSP Brite, Koller says the Ratchet & Clank pack will be back in black (as well as silver) starting in December. Upshot: you can totally regift the stuff you don't want!

Gallery: PSP Brite

[Thanks, Gordon]
4GB Piano Black PSP Brite bundle nixed, sticking with Ratchet & Clank pack originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 28 Oct 2008 08:51:00 EST. When the PSP Brite was introduced, SCEA had plans for two bundles. The first, which is available in stores now, is the Ratchet & Clank Entertainment Pack, which includes a silver PSP-3000, 1GB Memory Stick, a copy of Ratchet & Clank and echochrome download for $199. The other option, which was originally supposed to be available in November was the 4GB Memory Entertainment Pack, which included a black PSP-3000, 4GB Memory Stick and a download of Everyday Shooter for $199.

According to the PlayStation.blog, the 4GB Memory Entertainment Pack has been canceled before release. "SCEA has seen significant interest in the Ratchet & Clank Size Matters PSP Entertainment Pack in North America, which includes the updated PSP-3000. As a result, we will be streamlining our PSP hardware lineup and will no longer be offering the previously announced 4GB Memory PSP Entertainment Pack."

Sounds like a bad PR spin to us, but we'll manage. The Ratchet bundle looks like a good deal -- and as the post notes, a 4GB Memory Stick can be found on the cheap at many retailers.
4GB PSP Entertainment Pack will no longer see release originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 28 Oct 2008 00:00:00 EST. Did you read Play issue #171? If you did, you would've noticed a certain someone from a certain PSP fan blog talking about the recently released PSP-3000 (aka PSP Brite). The blogger in question talks about whether or not Sony upgraded the PSP system too quickly, and why the lack of a second analog stick is no big deal. "A lot of people [said] that Sony should 'fix' the PSP by adding a second analogue stick," says Yoon. "But that would fundamentally change the system, and potentially lock out owners of older models from upcoming games. As it stands, PSP owners, from the 1000 to the 3000 series, are all able to play upcoming games."

To download the featured article, click here (requires Acrobat Reader).
We talk about PSP-3000 in Play Magazine originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Oct 2008 11:11:00 EST. It's not all doom and gloom in the Sony financial camp, as the manufacturer has announced (via Reuters) that PlayStation Portable sales for the fiscal year, ending March 2009, would exceed forecast figures. Though SCEA is still "looking into the problem," Sony's Japanese headquarters (SCEI) has released a statement describing the PSP-3000 (a.k.a. PSP Brite) scanline issues as being part and parcel of the new hardware. "PSP-3000 has a new LCD device with vastly improved picture quality, achieving a more natural and vivid picture than older models," said the statement (via Engadget Japan). "By improving LCD response time to reduce ghosting, the horizontal-line phenomenon becomes more visible."

Turns out, phenomenon means "no fix in sight." According to Sony, "Since this phenomenon is caused by hardware characteristics, there is no plan to fix it with system software update." We'll be interested to see if Sony of America (SCEA) has anything different to say.

Update: SCEA has finally received the corporate memo, feeding us the same official statement from SCEI. Sony Japan has responded to criticisms about visible scanlines on the new PSP-3000 systems. While Sony America is looking into the situation, Japan's statement doesn't bode too well. It seems that the scanline problem is a feature of the new LCD screens. SCEI says that the "PSP-3000 has a new LCD device with vastly improved picture quality, achieving a more natural and vivid picture than older models. By improving LCD response time to reduce ghosting, the horizontal-line phenomenon becomes more visible."

The worst news is that there's no fix. "Since this is caused by hardware characteristics, there is no plan to fix it with system software update." Looks like it's here to stay. We're still waiting on a statement from SCEA but, from the looks of it, they won't have much new to add.

Update: SCEA response, after the break.
Continue reading PSP-3000 scanlines a hardware feature; no fix planned

PSP-3000 scanlines a hardware feature; no fix planned originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 Oct 2008 10:00:00 EST. PSP Brite is now out worldwide, so how's it doing everywhere else? In Japan (where the PSP is the sacred deity of 4-player co-op), it seems that not too many are catching on to the new hardware; only 141,270 units were sold in the first four days of sale (Oct. 16-19).

As PSPHyper points out, these numbers are not that impressive when compared to the PSP Slim's initial sales numbers which were 250,702 for the first week with 130K of that from the first day alone. With relatively slow sales figures and seemingly disastrous performance issues, it looks like the PSP Brite is getting off to a very rough start.

[Via PSPHyper]
PSP-3000 sold over 140K in first four days originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 Oct 2008 07:45:00 EST. The newly released PSP-3000 series should have a better screen than the old 2000 model. Not only does it have an expanded color depth, it's supposed to get rid of the ghosting that plagued every PSP since. While it succeeds, it appears that a new problem has emerged: scan lines, which make things look worse than they did in the 2000 model. A well-populated thread on the PlayStation forum shows the cries of dozens that are reporting the same problem.

Our test unit (which arrived today) also features the same problem. In fact, we're not digging the 3000 model at all. While the colors look nice, we're disappointed by its performance in sunlight. Even worse, the plastic on the new model feels cheaper than ever before.

Sony told Joystiq that they're currently "looking into this." Hopefully, it'll only take a firmware update to fix -- otherwise, many may opt to buy the 2000 series instead.
Users report screen issues with PSP Brite, Sony investigating originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 20 Oct 2008 19:00:00 EST.
Over on the official PlayStation forums, owners of Sony's revamped PSP Brite are in a tizzy over what many have reported as prominent screen interlacing during video playback and gameplay. The PSP-3000 uses a new high-contrast, low-latency screen that eliminates the ghosting/smearing associated with older PSP revisions, but appears to introduce a new issue of visible scanlines and notably jagged edges on moving objects. One poster provided comparison photos that illustrate the problem.

We unboxed our PSP Brite to test some games and see if we encountered the same problem. Sure enough, in both FMV and gameplay, there is a noticable offset between the two video fields comprising the on-screen image. The included Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters looks significantly more "pixelated" on the PSP-3000 versus on our PSP-2000, as did other games we tested, including God of War: Chains of Olympus and WipEout Pulse. Additionally, scanlines are visible simply when navigating the unit's XMB.

The problem is slightly less noticable when the new Wide Color Space option is turned off. We contacted SCEA for comment on this apparent hardware issue and were told that the company is "looking into this" and will get back to us as soon as possible. We'll update this post when we hear more. In the meantime, let us know in comments if you're experiencing similar issues with the PSP Brite.

Sony's re-tooled PSP-3000 (a.k.a. the "PSP Brite") is on the loose, and that means two things: 1) you can buy one of your very own and 2) someone's bought one, busted it open, and taken pictures. This post is about the latter (as if the image didn't give it away).

The folks at PC Watch Impress have snapped gobs of photos showing the unboxing and ultimate disassembling of the new PSP model. It all looks fairly similar to the guts of a PSP-2000, although as one PSP Fanboy commenter pointed out, those hoping to pop a nicer, more contrast-ier 3000 screen into their 2000 unit will be foiled by a re-sized ribbon connector. (And really ... buy a PSP Brite just to gut it for your PSP Lite?)

[Via PSP Fanboy]

While the PSP Brite may be launching rather stealthily in America, Japan is taking a different approach. Sony has two ads for the newly redesigned system, one for the black system and one for the white. The system isn't changed too much, but at least Sony Japan's customers will know that this system exists -- something we doubt Sony America will let happen here at all.

See the other ad, after the break.

Continue reading How Japan advertises the PSP-3000

How Japan advertises the PSP-3000 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 15 Oct 2008 15:45:00 EST. The third PSP redesign is now available in retail stores across the US and the rest of North America. The first PSP Brite pack, which is out now starting today, is the silver Ratchet & Clank bundle. It's a Silver PSP with a copy of Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, a National Treasure 2 UMD movie, 1GB memory stick and an online download voucher for echochrome. The price remains the same as the older bundles at MSRB $199.99.

If you're looking for that other bundle which is the black PSP Brite with the 4GB memory stick, you'll still have to wait for next month in order to get that. The silver pack will be available in all European countries except the UK a day later on October 15. EU countries will also have to wait for the black bundle in November.
PSP Brite is now available in North America originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Oct 2008 12:00:00 EST. Sony has announced that all future first-party PSP games will be available through download in Japan, beginning later this year via the Wi-Fi Store. The store is scheduled to open in Japan on October 15th with the firmware v5.00 update. Games to be sold by direct download include Secret Agent Clank (11/20), Patapon 2 (11/27), and LocoRoco 2 (12/4) (these titles will also be available on UMD).

There is currently no date for the release of the store in North America or Europe. We're also wondering how downloadable games' pricing will compare to standard UMD retail prices (considering that direct downloads save on packaging, shipping and a slew of other costs). We'll update as soon as we hear anything.

TGS 08: PSP Wi-Fi Store opening Oct. 15 in Japan; all future first-party titles to be downloadable originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 09 Oct 2008 12:57:00 EST. So what does Sony think about the newly announced DSi, the main competitor to Sony's PSP Brite in Japan this holiday season?

We didn't even have to ask -- because Sony's John Koller, director of hardware marketing, approached Gizmodo directly in hopes of discussing their side of the story. Does this new iteration provide enough differentiation from its predecessor? "Nintendo has kind of a history of these [moderate] kinds of updates, and even with DS Lite, there was a lot of discussion, 'Is that enough?' And they seemed to do pretty well there."

How will the DSi fare? "I can see the DSi being successful. The DS lite was obviously very successful. Will DSi do well with [the DS's] demographic? It probably will. Will it be a product that expands their user base [beyond] under 12? I'm not sure." Unfortunately, Koller did not directly address how the DS's hardware refresh compares to the PSP's hardware refresh. But it did seem like Koller was giving a backhanded compliment to Nintendo's handheld -- it will do reasonably well, but you'll only be selling it to children again. How do you guys feel? Do these hardware refreshes matter? Or is it ultimately software that determines the winner?
What Sony's John Koller thinks about the DSi originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Oct 2008 11:00:00 EST. PSP-3000) bundle also shows store functionality (via Amazon), indicating that the fall launch will be global and just in time to keep yourself distracted during Thanksgiving dinner. It was previously rumored that the store would be coming with firmware 5.00.

In other PSP Brite news, the gang at Eurogamer spent the weekend with the upgraded handheld as well as firmware 4.20, featuring a Color Space option that, "If you set to [Wide], the system's display will appear more vivid."

[Via PSP Fanboy]
PSP Brite box art shows Wi-Fi Store originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 06 Oct 2008 13:30:00 EST. Eurogamer got some hands-on time with the PSP Brite (PSP-3000) and spilled some details on the upcoming piece of hardware as well as the firmware installed on it, version 4.20.

In terms of the hardware, they noticed that the screen was significantly brighter; the PSP Brite's highest brightness setting not plugged in to an outlet is noticeably brighter than the PSP Slim & Lite's brightest setting with the PSP plugged in. Unfortunately, they did not test the PSP Brite's performance in the sun, which was something we were looking forward to finding out. The battery life was then tested, and they clocked the PSP Brite's battery life at 5 and a half hours -- exactly the same as its predecessor.

The PSP also came equipped with the latest firmware. Firmware 4.20 appears to bring only minor updates -- there is a new "USB Auto-Connect" feature, which will allow the PSP to automatically enter USB mode at any time (except during gameplay) when it becomes connected. They also noticed a "Flicker Reduction" option, but nothing else noteworthy. For their full preview of the PSP Brite, check out Eurogamer.

[Thanks, Zach M.!]
PSP Brite preview reveals battery life and details on firmware 4.20 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 06 Oct 2008 10:30:00 EST.
This is the boxart for the PSP Brite Limited Edition 4GB memory stick pack. Notice anything interesting? PS3 owners among you might recognise two things. Firstly, the PSN logo, which the PSP has previously not been associated with. Secondly, the screen shows the PSN Store. The actual PSN store, not the PC-based website. Interesting. That means we should be seeing the direct PSP store before this bundle releases on November 30th. Will we be hearing an announcement regarding the exact release date for the WI-FI based store directly on the PSP soon? With the Tokyo Game Show just around the corner, it's a strong possibility.

During the past few weeks the PSP's sales have been less than ideal, but Sony's portable is still on top in Japan for 2008 ... so far. According the Enterbrain, the PSP has sold 1,583,731 units the first half of the year in the land of the rising sun. The PSP's main competitor, Nintendo's DS, sold 1,314,919 units during that same period. Nintendo's portable is still way ahead of the PSP in terms of lifetime sales though -- 23,484,680 units of the DS were sold versus the PSP's 10,157,757 units sold.

In the software arena, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G is in second place with 1,602,386 copies sold. It was beaten by yet another Nintendo product, Mario Kart Wii, which sold 1,744,387 copies.

With the PSP Brite launching in about two weeks and DSi launching in a month, the two handhelds' struggle for dominance in Japan will truly begin. Now we gotta ask: who are you rooting for?

Features to be included in the next major PSP update, v5.00, have allegedly been detailed (translation) by an unnamed French developer working with the beta version of the firmware. 5.00 will supposedly include direct access to the PlayStation Store, which was promised last month for the fall (in Japan, at least), along with an improved RSS reader with text file support and a screen capture mode that supports in-game screenshots. The source could not confirm a date for the firmware's public release, but speculates that it could coincide with the launch of PSP Brite, the new hardware revision, on October 14th or in the weeks following. PSP's current firmware version is 4.05 -- if true, it would be a big leap to 5.00, by Sony standards.

[Via PSP World; thanks, Skylar]
Rumor: PSP firmware 5.00 to add Wi-Fi Store, screen captures originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 30 Sep 2008 20:30:00 EST. You're not getting one, sorry. The Limited Edition Dissidia PSP-3000 bundle bound for Japan is being sold exclusively through a lottery system that only Square Enix members in Japan can enter in. The entry period is limited to a one week window, and amongst those entries, random people will be selected to purchase those systems.

So your best bet: eBay.

[Thanks, Darryl!]
Dissidia limited edition PSP is ridiculously limited edition originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 19 Sep 2008 16:09:00 EST. You gotta tip your hat to modern medicine. It just five short days the diagnosis of PSP Brite's battery life has gone from dim to, um, serviceable. PSP hardware marketing director John Koller dropped his latest prognosis on PlayStation.Blog today, assuring all that his original evaluation was incorrect. "The new PSP will have equivalent battery life to the current PSP," Koller writes. He estimates:

4-6 hours for games

4-5 hours for UMD movies

Well then, looks like we'll be returning that Nyko snake oil we bought last week. And does this mean we can stop storing our PSP in the freezer?
PSP Brite cured of ailing battery life originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 03 Sep 2008 18:29:00 EST. It seems like Sony crammed a bit more magic juice into the upcoming PSP Brite (PSP-3000). Before, they claimed that the upcoming hardware revision would have a slightly shortened battery life. However, a new post on the PlayStation.blog says otherwise. John Koller admits that the "screen of the new PSP draws a little more power" but he claims that "our engineers in Japan worked to reduce the power consumption of the overall system including its components." As such, final battery life on the Brite series will be nearly identical to that of the previous model: "about 4 to 6 hours for games and about 4 to 5 hours for UMD videos," says the post.
Sony revises battery life statement: says Brite will be the same originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 03 Sep 2008 15:10:00 EST.
