We consider packaging to be quite effective when you can tell at a glance just what awaits you inside of it. Take this God of War Entertainment Pack, for example. There's the "Deep Red" PSP, the Superbad UMD, the critically praised God of War: Chains of Olympus and ... well, there's also a PSN voucher for Syphon Filter: Combat Ops, which isn't pictured. To be fair, that's simply due to the lack of excitement incurred by a piece of paper with some obscure code on it.

Also not pictured is the price tag of $199.99 and, perhaps most importantly, a disappointing label which reads, "Not for sale until June."

The PSP 2200mAh battery is not new to the market, but bundling it with a pair of covers is. Meet the PSP Extended Life Battery Kit: a battery, two plastic covers, and a lot of packaging. What the kit does provide for PSP-2000 owners (besides an awkward bulge) is about 80% more battery life -- just 20% for those using the original PSP, and no bulge. Unfortunately, Sony couldn't find room for a 'Ceramic White' cover, so those affected will have to settle for the junkyard van look.

A price has yet to be listed, but expect the battery kit to retail in the $40 range.
Sony unveils 'PSP Extended Life Battery Kit' originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 27 Nov 2007 17:15:00 EST. Due to the overwhelming success of the PSP, Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu surveyed 68 of its retail partners for their thoughts on the state of the PSP. The survey revealed a number of interesting factoids. For example, Piano Black is the best selling system (17.4%) while Rose Pink is the worst (6.9%). Unsurprisingly, Crisis Core ended up being the top seller of the month, which caught 62.7% of retailers off guard -- they couldn't predict sales would be so strong.

Although Crisis Core sold so well, it was actually the 1seg, retailers report, that inspired the most PSP sales. However, in spite of the system's current success, 43.3% of retailers surveyed do not believe PSP momentum will continue.

The retailers are worried about the lack of big titles coming up for the system. More games like Monster Hunter are (obviously) needed. Some other suggestions included: games that support the 1seg (how would that work?), record functionality for the 1seg, and new colors that look different than DS's offerings. Supposedly, Japan's software lineup on PSP leaves something to be desired as well.

For the complete report, make sure you check out PSPHyper.
Famitsu survey reveals: PSP momentum in doubt originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 20 Oct 2007 11:11:00 EST. The PSP Slim & Lite has been reliably mysterious. Sony, in all of its territories, has done a fantastic job of keeping everyone in the dark of when their systems are going to come out. Case in point: the white PSP-2000. Well, retailer play.com has listed a release date for the white non-Darth Vader system: October 26th.

It's the first time we've heard of a release date for the system. The system should satiate those that have been patiently waiting for a non-black (or silver!) system in the territory.

[Via Pocket Gamer]
Play.com: White PSP heading to UK next week originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 18 Oct 2007 18:00:00 EST. This proof-of-concept "TV Out Example" will let your homebrew-enabled PSP-2000 the ability to output games content full screen, no borders! Even more surprising is that it'll even work with the composite cables, allowing those without ED/HDTVs to enjoy the wonder of playing PSP games on the TV. Certainly, if this ragtag team of enthusiasts can do it, Sony can as well? We're hoping that the official firmware development team doesn't take this lightly and follows pursuit as soon as possible.

[Via PSP Hacks]
Homebrew endows PSP-2000 with full screen TV output originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 15 Oct 2007 18:00:00 EST.
Don't be afraid to admit it: you want the new PSP-2000. With its slimmer figure, lighter weight, TV-Out functionality, and faster load times, it's a remarkable improvement over the PSP Phat. But, haven't been able to snatch a system for yourself? The next big console success in Japan is ... the PSP?!

Color us shocked, but the one-two punch of the redesign and Crisis Core has made a serious impression on the Japanese. The slimmer PSP-2000 has sold over half a million units in less than two weeks. With numbers like that, you'd think that there was a brain training game somewhere hidden in the system.

We predict good things to come as a new Gundam game hit Japanese store shelves yesterday. We hear that they're somewhat fond of that franchise.
PSP-2000 sells half a million in Japan originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 04 Oct 2007 11:00:00 EST. After estimating Wii's death clock, the Earthworm Jim designer has set his sights on Sony's PSP.

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Perry refers to redesign as a "head in the sand" move while saying that Sony should "restart the PSP program" and specifically calls for the removal of UMD in favor of digital download.

Perry also suggests that the transition to an UMD-less PSP would be relatively painless, asserting that it would be easy to create software to authenticate and re-download for free titles you already own.

While we agree that digital distribution is on the rise, we're not sure if there's financial benefit for the consumer. A 1.0 GB memory stick can cost over $30, and then you still have the buy the titles (which may not drop in price should they go download). If you want to carry more than a few games around, you're going to need multiple memory sticks. If Sony does heed Perry's advice (and we see no evidence as to why they would), maybe they could replace the UMD slot with a decent hard drive, instead.
Dave Perry: PSP Lite a 'head in the sand' move for Sony originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 Sep 2007 15:15:00 EST. So, you want a fancy new theme on your PSP-2000? Well, who can blame you? You've had the thing for all of a week now, it's time for a change. So let's get started!

Upgrade!: First things first, you're going to want to update to the 3.70 PSP Firmware. Just go all the way to the left in that XMB menu and hit "Network Update." (Tip: Make sure your PSP is able to connect to the internet, otherwise this will go poorly.) Follow the instructions to update your firmware.

Continue reading The Joystiq Guide to PSP Themes

The Joystiq Guide to PSP Themes originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Sep 2007 16:26:00 EST. This means that some homebrew that was developed specifically for 1.50 (e.g. homebrew games that would go into the GAME150 folder) will not work with the custom firmware.

The installation is complex, requiring a Pandora Battery and Pandora memory stick, a non-Slim PSP with firmware 1.50 or custom firmware that supports 1.50 kernel, and of course, a PSP-2000. As always, this is not for the faint of heart nor anyone who hates carefully reading and following instructions, as there is always a possibility of bricking your brand new PSP-2000. As such, use at your own risk. Full instructions for the installation can be found here.

Download M33's custom 3.60 firmware here (scroll down to the bottom of the first post).

[via DCEmu, thanks everyone who sent this in!]
Homebrew on PSP Slim via 3.60 M33 Custom Firmware originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 10 Sep 2007 18:30:00 EST. For those of you that have wanted to jump on the PSP-2000 bandwagon, this might be your best chance. EB Games/GameStop are offering an extra $20 of trade-in value when you give them your PSP. We're somewhat enamored by the Korean advertising campaign for the New PSP (aka PSP-2005). This ad shows a butterfly lifting the new lighter system, emphasizing that it weighs only 189 grams. This is a far more effective ad than Japan's.

Also, it appears that the Korean PSP isn't just losing weight, it's becoming cheaper. Korean gamers can now pick it up for only 178,000 won (appx. $190).

[Via PSP-Vault]
Butterflies lift away new Korean PSPs originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 07 Sep 2007 20:00:00 EST. Other complaints involve the UMD slot metal tabs being easily bendable, too many inputs slots (they would rather an iPod-esque single input), and plastic bezel instead of the metal one used on the older PSP.

The fact that these are GamePro's four main gripes about the system is a testament to how well designed the new system is. We've been looking in-depth at our PSP-2000, and again, and once more for good luck, and have not found anything too alarming. With the release of the delicious new PSPs, some of you may be lured in by the slim form factor and the lighter weight. But there are others among you who may have had the deal sweetened by the lure of a much ... darker desire: That seductive, underground siren known in hushed whispers as "homebrew." Though it's supposed to be hush hush, discussion about it has previously been fairly active on Sony's own forums. (We know, we were as surprised as you.)

Now, apparently, the gravy train has ended, with Sony banning mentions of the illicit activity on the forums, writing, "Homebrew applications void the warranty of the PSP(R)(PlayStation(R)Portable) system, and an official area to discuss such activities cannot be provided by SCEA." (By the way, primo community relations, guys. Did you hire Major Nelson?) Our friends at PSP Fanboy think Sony's trying to keep the new wave of PSP owners from hearing about homebrew, while we think they're just trying to make it seem all dirty and wrong again. What do you think?

[Via PSPF]

No more PSP homebrew talk on Sony's forums originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 06 Sep 2007 19:25:00 EST. They're definitely not available today in the United Kingdom, but on September 14 the PSP Slim will be released into the wild. The Daxter bundle is available in select retailers today (call them before you head out!). But what's inside the box? Here we have your first look at the new PSP bundles. Inside, you'll see that the bundled UMDs do not come inside actual game cases. Rather, they're enclosed in cardboard paper sleeves that proudly proclaim "Not for Resale." Guess you won't be able to trade them into GameStop, huh?

Also included in our gallery are some high-res shots of the other packs, such as the Star Wars Battlefront combo. Sony has issued forth a press release stating that the newly slimmed PSPs (the PSP-2000 to the tech savvy) are now available in the wild. You'll still have to buy the silvery systems as part of the $199.99 "Entertainment Pack," which comes with a copy of Daxter, the Family Guy -- Freakin' Sweet Collection on UMD, and a 1GB Memory Stick.

Funny thing though, calls to all of our local game stores turned up squat, both in terms of consoles and in info. In order, we heard "We don't know.", "There's no date.", "It's not in our system." and "Christmas." Have any of you had better luck?
PSP-2000s apparently available today originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Sep 2007 12:40:00 EST. The bad news keeps on rolling in for UK residents interested in picking up a PSP Lite. The redesigned handheld seemingly has been delayed nine days: from its "before the rest of the world" September 5th date to a much more somber "after the rest of the world" date of September 14th. No official response has been provided from Sony, but with no advertising, no AV cables, and a single color at launch, it seems Sony is poised to disappoint their European fans with a lackluster attempt at launching a new system.
PSP Lite launch delayed for the UK originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 04 Sep 2007 20:15:00 EST. Some may say the biggest selling point of the newly redesigned PSP is its ability to output video to the TV. So, why are the cables not available at launch? Questioningly, the PSP-2000 will not get this system-defining peripheral at its launch. In terms of color selection, only Piano Black will be at launch. Ceramic White and Ice Silver seem to be MIA at the moment.

We contacted Sony Computer Entertainment America to see whether or not the AV cables will be available at the US system launch later this year. However, they've yet to return our e-mails. Stay tuned for more.
AV cables not available at UK PSP launch originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 04 Sep 2007 16:00:00 EST. It seems that games do load faster, although not as significantly as we would hope. In the above side-by-side video of the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront, you can see that although the games were launched at the same time, the PSP-2000 (the silver one) loads slightly faster than the original. It loads the level slightly faster as well. However, going through our games collection resulted in varying results -- some games didn't change at all, while games like Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow actually took longer on PSP-2000! It appears that games with significantly long load times are the ones to benefit the most. Check out our test results here. However, going through our games collection resulted in varying results -- some games didn't change at all, while games like Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow actually took longer on PSP-2000! It appears that games with significantly long load times are the ones to benefit the most. Check out our test results here. Check out Gamespot's test results, which feature different games, here.
Continue reading Joystiq and PSPFB hands on with PSP-2000: Part 2

Joystiq and PSPFB hands on with PSP-2000: Part 2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 31 Aug 2007 17:56:00 EST.
How did they make the PSP smaller? The first Japanese ad for it uses an analogy ... they had to squeeze it to be 91 grams smaller.

Certainly, the new PSP doesn't look very different from its predecessor. Sony will have to its very best to educate customers on why they might want to consider purchasing the newer, slimmer PSP. Do you think this ad does the job? Having people get hands-on time with the upcoming PSP-2000 makes a lot of sense to us. But, according to Joystiq, the experience at PAX was a little uncomfortable. The Sony booth girls (who look a lot like PSP-tan) had systems tethered to them. However, for better or for worse, the systems were tucked away in a sensitive area (see picture, above).

Joystiq added that "the cables weren't very long" and provided "awkward situations where you all up in their personal space and playing with something right next to the front of their pants." Hot?
Girls deliver awkward PSP experience at PAX originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 27 Aug 2007 09:10:00 EST. The PSP is changing in ways we never expected. The earphone and remote accessory is changing for the new PSP-2000. As you can see, the remote now has a reconfigured button layout -- could it be more intuitive than the original? We're assuming that the PSP-2000 requires this new remote due to the changed AV-compatible headphone jack.

Check out another picture of the redesigned earphones after the cut.
Continue reading PSP earphones and remote get redesigned

PSP earphones and remote get redesigned originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 Aug 2007 18:30:00 EST. The race for PSP Lite is on! And ... Europe wins! The redesigned PSP-2000 will arrive in Europe on September 5th, and will feature two new movie-themed PSP systems to boot. "Simpsons Yellow" and "Spider-man Black and Red." We don't have pictures of these new models quite yet -- but our man in Leipzig should be able to steal a snapshot for you tomorrow. Unfortunately, according to Joystiq, it appears as though The Simpsons model is quite "gaudy."
PSP Lite launches September 5th in Europe with Simpsons Yellow, Spider-man Red originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 Aug 2007 17:30:00 EST. Yes. Colours with a "u." Some specially designed PSPs will be available only within Sony Europe's territories when the 2000 models launch on September 5th. In "Simpsons Yellow" and "Spider-man Black and Red" flavours, these new designs are clearly geared towards movie-buffs but also make a more colourful alternative to the current selection of black, silver and white.

Americans will be able to choose from "Darth Vader White," black and silver -- if you really want a garish yellow PSP Slim, you can always import.
LGC07: European PSP Slim launches with new colours originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 Aug 2007 15:28:00 EST. Here are the cables that you'll need to get your PSP connected to your TV. It's true that Japan has far more colors to choose from than the upcoming American launch of the redesigned PSP. However, did you know that Japanese customers are facing serious restrictions too?

Sofmap in Akihabara has been meeting such wild demand for the redesigned PSP that customers are limited to only one system pre-order ... and aren't given the choice to pick a color. Amazon Japan pre-orders are already closed due to overwhelming demand.

It's great to see PSP start picking up the spotlight in a territory that's typically been dominated by a different handheld.

[Via Kotaku]
Heavy demand restricts choice for Japanese PSP pre-orders originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Aug 2007 13:30:00 EST. MTV News' Stephen Totilo managed to snag a plethora of details on the PSP 2000 (that's what they're calling it internally) from SCEA's head of marketing for the PSP division John Koller.

All future PSP titles from Sony will utilize the upgraded 333MHz clockspeed, reportedly without a hit on battery life, said Koller. A second thumbstick was considered, as was (briefly) a built-in hard drive instead of Memory Stick. Both ideas were ultimately turned down.

The upcoming PSP title Echochrome was originally going to be downloadable via the PSN, but Koller said they went with UMD because it was a "very rich game." Original, downloadable PSP titles should be coming in the next six to eight months, he said.

The camera may get some specification changes before its North American release. The GPS attachment is expected to hit US shores in the next 10 to 12 months. As for the TV tuner, there are no plans for release it outside of Japan.

Check out Totilo's article for more information, including Koller's assertion that Sony had nothing to do with famed hacker Dark_Alex's retirement.

[Via PSP Fanboy]
Ample details on slimmer PSP originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Aug 2007 16:25:00 EST. At E3, we had a chance to talk to SCEA Senior Vice President Philip Rosenberg and John Koller, Senior Marketing Manager of the PSP. We talked to these two Sony executives to find out more about Home, possible PSP integration with Home, the redesign, and more.

When John was asked why PSP integration with Home wasn't on display at Sony's press conference, he noted that "It's absolutely roadmapped. It's certainly on the agenda. I think the point of the cell phone was just to show you can bring other products into play. But the PSP is certainly roadmapped at this point. Like Phil was saying, it's all about bringing together the PlayStation portfolio of products together and using them the right way with Home."

Thankfully, Philip Rosenberg was able to give us a few hints at things to come. "But being able to access leaderboards, or community, or find out which of your friends are in Home, or in-game via hotspot, I think is realistic. As far as timing? I think that there's more to come."

To read the complete interview, visit Joystiq.
Joystiq interview confirms Home amibitions for PSP originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Jul 2007 13:01:00 EST. Why does Sony believe Home is such an important part of the PlayStation family?

Phil: That's a great question. Home for us is a way to engage all of our users in real community, but in a real 3D manner that gives them a place to meet and to share their successes or their failures and then jump into gameplay. It creates an opportunity for us to help engage them even more in our platforms. I think when you look at the interface -- like how a PSP pops up in Home -- our whole proposition is around the ecosystem of PlayStation. It's not just about one platform. If you're in the house, or away from the house -- no matter where you are, you can stay connected with your peers.
Continue reading Joystiq interviews SCEA's Phil Rosenberg and John Koller

Joystiq interviews SCEA's Phil Rosenberg and John Koller originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Jul 2007 13:01:00 EST.
