Daniel Lanciana has created a Kickstarter to bring his 240-page hardcover tome on Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! to the masses. He's currently halfway to his goal of $25,000, with 20 days left to go. We'd heard about this project a week ago, but were concerned about giving it attention, since it was sure to activate Nintendo's ever-ready lawyers.

"Haha. I want to activate their attorneys because at least I'll know where I stand! Plus it's currently at the proposal stage, so 'no harm no foul'," Lanciana told us. "The passion behind the project was to print myself a copy, which I've done. Getting it to a wider audience would be great, but if it's crushed by Nintendo I won't mind at all as I would have given it my best shot."

Asked how the project was coming along otherwise, he told us the community has been overwhelmingly supportive and it looks like he'll hit the funding goal.

"The decision to make the book was just something I'm kinda compelled to do. I have a knack for finding, absorbing and simplifying info on any topic that interests me...and there's a lot that interests me. Applying that information to a beautifully designed book makes it meaningful and gives closure."

We wish Daniel all the best, as the lawyers should be contacting him in 3...2...1...

It'll be followed a week later by a trio of Sega Game Gear games, including Shinobi, Sonic Triple Trouble, and Dragon Crystal.

There's also new new stuff coming to eShop. Ketzal's Corridors, coming "soon," seems to be the game known in Japan as Speedthru, a 3D puzzle game like the Wii's ThruSpace -- in which players rotate Tetris-like shapes to go through oncoming walls. In April, the DS homebrew drawing app Colors! becomes a for-real, official thing on 3DS as Colors! 3D. Other releases include Fun! Fun! Minigolf Touch! and a demo for Rhythm Thief. For fans of the NES' flagship pugilism sim Punch-Out!!!, the latest edition of Iwata Asks is chock-full of tidbits about the game that you probably didn't know. For instance, Nintendo Entertainment and Analysis Division's Makoto Wada reveals a long-hidden secret that makes fights against Bald Bull go much easier. Also, Glass Joe? He's got osteoporosis. Yeah, you should feel bad. Poor guy.

However, the most entertaining unearthed secret is the fact that Shigeru Miyamoto never signed off on the use of Mario as the game's mustachioed referree. In Miyamoto's own words, "we didn't have an approval system when using Mario images back then and it went right past my check." The interview transcript adds that he laughed after saying this, but we imagine at least one stink-eye was shot across the table.

Nintendo Australia managing director Rose Lappin told Kotaku AU that Aussie gamers can expect Punch-Out!! in stores late August, but only if those stores are JB Hi-Fi locations.

"To be honest we didn't have a lot of requests for the game," Lappin said. "There's a few people ... there's a lot of noise but not a lot of sales, that sort of thing." JB Hi-Fi, Lappin suggested, was the only retailer that showed significant interest.

But at least Punch-Out!! is getting some kind of release. Not so for Excitebots, which won't come out in Australia at all. Lappin told Kotaku AU that there just wasn't enough demand for the game from retailers or consumers.

It's tough being a super hero. If you're Dr. Doom and you're feeling down, you can just blow something up. If you're The Thing, well, all you can really do is look in a mirror and cry to yourself.

That was before Punch-Out!!, though, with a new ad (courtesy of Gamervision) popping up in comics showing two beefy brawlers finding a proper outlet for their stress. Oh, we really wouldn't suggest playing with the Wiimote and Nunchuk, super guys. The game is way better with the classic controls.

Some of the more experienced Punch-Out!! players probably know of the trick to defeating Spain's resident matador, Don Flamenco, in the original game. However, in the years between that title and his appearance in the new game, it would seem he has learned nothing. With some carefully timed punches, Little Mac can turn Flamenco into the best two-stepper this side of the MIssissipp'. Head past the break to watch the trick in action.

Now that the veil of secrecy has been lifted by pretty much every other site, though, we figure we might as well help you ruin the surprise for yourself if you're in to that sort of thing.

It may not be a TKO, but Punch-Out!! on the Wii is certainly a knock-out. We've already entered the ring of public opinion with our review, but let's find out what the others in the peanut gallery have to say about it. It appears that -- much like Little Mac -- the series has aged gracefully and found a nice fit on the Wii.
  • Gamespy (90/100): "Punch-Out!! is destined to become one of this generation's top classics, right up there with Super Mario Galaxy. It's one heckuva peace offering for Nintendo's jilted lifers, an elaborate brainteaser for everyone who picks it up, and absolutely the best Punch-Out!! to date. If you're still fishing for a reason to own a Wii, this is it."
  • Game Informer (90/100): "Despite these complaints, the single-player has always been the focus of Punch-Out, and Next Level delivers. What better way to show your buddy up than to totally annihilate the boxer that just KO'd him?"
  • GamePro (90/100): "There's no denying it: Punch-Out!! is some of the most fun I've had on the Wii in quite some time. A spectacular trip down memory lane, Punch-Out!! manages to capture the old-school essence that made the 1987 original such a success, all the while integrating just enough new material to help it hold its own. While Punch-Out!! is by no means perfect, it's undoubtedly one of the finest arcade-inspired titles to grace store shelves in this "next gen" era, and is without a doubt worth any hardcore fight-fan's hard-earned cash."

It's been over 10 years since the last game in the Punch-Out!! series -- Super Punch-Out!! on the SNES -- was released with a new visual style, a host of new boxers, and some new moves in Little Mac's repertoire. Nintendo has finally provided us with another installment in the series, now with motion-based controls, Balance Board support, and multiplayer. While it ultimately feels like the same game we've played before, it's hard to peg that as a bad thing.

If you've yet to pre-order the game, head over to Amazon and lay your money down. Unless, of course, you're Bald Bull, in which case you'll probably just charge it.

Except that they have Punch-Out!! logos on them, which would be really weird and meta on Little Mac. In fact, now that we think about it, if you just bought a pink sweatshirt elsewhere, it would be more authentic.

It wouldn't, however, be nearly as rare: the sweatshirts won't be made available for sale, according to the Punch-Out!! Twitter account. They'll only be available at this event. Speaking of exclusive swag, you can get a free poster if you purchase the game at Target.

We all know that boxing is a rather physically demanding sport -- but rarely does anyone acknowledge the emotional toll it takes on participating pugilists. Take poor little Little Mac, former W.V.B.A. champ, whose remarkable achievements in the ring crumbled beneath the tremendous girth of King Hippo, setting the miniature boxer on a downward spiral that he wouldn't escape for 15 years.

Now, with a little over a week between us and Little Mac's ringside return in Punch-Out!! for the Wii, he's getting back in shape with a bit of help from his bike riding den mother, Doc Louis. You can catch a short documentary/commercial (documercial?) about the rise and fall of Mac after the break. It's pretty funny! But also pretty tragic. (But mostly funny.)

As we read about the Punch-Out!! Challenge set for May 16 from 1 to 4 p.m., we couldn't help thinking about how times have changed. Back in the day, when we would hold a Punch Out!! tournament, it would be on the floor of Mark Fisher's rec room, not Rockefeller Center's Nintendo World store. And we wouldn't be facing off against one another, because it was a single-player game -- the only test was between Tyson and our own iron will.

One thing hasn't changed though: You'll still receive a radical fake title for winning. But, for the record, we'd pass up Nintendo's World Video Boxing Association title for our Totally Laser Ninja Turtle World Punch Out Master award any day of the week.

Nintendo has officially announced (via GameTrailers) an ... interesting looking ... multiplayer mode for upcoming Wii game, Punch-Out!! Hidden after a full minute of the Punch-Out!! trailer we've already seen is the entirely new minute, containing news of not only the modestly named "Head-to-Head" mode but also "Giga Mac" (pictured above).

Gleaning what we can from the trailer, we're wont to believe that the large version of Little Mac is a direct product of well-placed punches filling up a "super" meter next to each players respective health bars. Nintendo clearly wants us to know the appearance of "Giga Mac" isn't a game ender for multiplayer, though, as even in the video (after the break) Little Mac prevails against his gargantuan twin. We're looking forward to finding out even more about Punch-Out!! when it arrives on May 18.

Craigslist provides another bit of strange, gaming-related news, this time with EDP Casting sending out a casting call for Punch-Out!! lookalikes. The post is looking for New York natives to fill the boxing gloves of Piston Honda, King Hippo, Great Tiger and, of course, Little Mac. The listing doesn't specify what the casting call is for but we'd like to dream the entire classic NES title would be put to music and run on Broadway -- with the help of Andrew Lloyd Webber, of course.

If you think you've got the chops to jump into Mac's pink sweatsuit, make sure to take note that EDP is looking for someone with "real fire" in their eyes. So, you really have to want the part ... or at least undergo some experimental surgery.

Super Punch-Out!! is one of the great classics to grace the SNES. There's really no excuse one can provide for not having this (outside of not owning a Wii, being dead, or hating everything that is good and decent), so scrounge up eight bucks and enjoy.

Every week, we like to check out what's new on the Virtual Console. We offer these videos as a sort of taste to help you decide whether or not you would want the game in question. We also toss in our own two cents because we're pushy jerks.

Little Mac is definitely back, and he brought Doc Louis with him. He's also hauling a heck of a lot more pixels this time around, and we're happy to report that Punch-Out!! is indeed still fun to play. The Nintendo booth (the largest and lone major gaming publisher on the show floor) was showing off Punch-Out!! on a few stations, although sadly without the Balance Board functionality that's coming to the game.

It did show off four of the thirteen total fighters, including Glass Joe, Von Kaiser, King Hippo, and the newcomer, Disco Kid. He looks like what you'd get if you crossed Mike Tyson with Ric Flair, and pulled him through a Disney movie animation wringer. He likes to primp, check himself out in a mirror, and pose for the crowd. Little Mac learned the lesson about the dangers of vanity long ago, so there's no such worry. Head after the break and start training, Punch-Out!! comes out on the Wii this May.

IGN smartly notes that the last time Super Punch-Out!! was available was as an unlockable in the Gamecube version of Fight Night. Nintendo has come a long way since those days.

This ain't your dad's Punch-Out! No, with Balance Board support, it'll be your mom's Punch-Out!

The Italian Nintendo site leaked details on the various control schemes found in the upcoming Wii-make of Nintendo's classic boxing game. The first two modes are as-expected: play with the Wii Remote and Nunchuck to recreate the physical motion of boxing, or play with the Remote on its side to play it NES-style. The third mode documented takes advantage of the Wii Fit Balance Board, allowing players to dodge attacks by shifting their weight. Coupled with the Wii Remote and Nunchuck, this mode should provide quite a workout.
