A bit of that old Silicon Knights black magic lives on in Shadow of the Eternals, the "spiritual successor" to Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem from Precursor Games. Art assets originally created by Silicon Knights employees have been bought, paid for and implemented into this new project.

"We did purchase some art assets from Silicon Knights," Precursor Games CEO Paul Caporicci told Wired. "We were very happy to be able to put those assets created by the talented past employees to use." It was reported last October that as much as 40 percent of Silicon Knights had been working on a sequel to Eternal Darkness, which may explain the existence of said art assets.

Shadow of the Eternals is being built in CryEngine 3, Caporicci added - an important distinction to make considering the major issues Silicon Knights suffered after using Unreal Engine 3 and subsequently employing its own game engine. Though Nintendo owns the rights to Eternal Darkness and has patented the game's sanity mechanics, Caporicci said similar gameplay ideas can be safely implemented without breaking the law.
Shadow of the Eternals uses assets purchased from Silicon Knights originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 09 May 2013 19:30:00 EST. The purchase will set ol' Walt back $4.05 billion.

Industrial Light & Magic, Skywalker Sound and LucasArts are all included in the purchase price, meaning that Disney has not only found a way to profit from the production of movies that it isn't making, but also how to get Jar-Jar Binks into a Kingdom Hearts game.

The company also announced that Star Wars 7 exists and is aiming for a 2015 release date, which makes this the most insane thing ever. Lucasfilm co-chairman Kathleen Kennedy will become president of Lucasfilm under Disney, and will also act as executive producer on "new Star Wars feature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant."
Disney acquires Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion, LucasArts included originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 30 Oct 2012 16:31:00 EST. The company's blue-light special asking price was due in part to its $18.7 million in debt, in addition to the fact that the last of its available cash had already been allocated to fulfill payroll obligations.

Granted, $4.8 million is still more money than we'll ever see in our entire lives, but it seems a bit paltry when compared with Sony's $380 million acquisition of Gaikai. Under the circumstances, however, this was as good as it was going to get for OnLive.

"Had the sale to the buyer not taken place, the assignee would have been left with inadequate capital to fund the significant costs to preserve and market OnLive's patents and other intellectual property, thus greatly reducing expected recoveries essentially to those of a forced piecemeal auction," says Insolvency Services Group CEO Joel Weinberg in the letter to OnLive's creditors.

OnLive's creditors will receive around $0.26 for every dollar originally owed, according to the letter.
Lauder's purchase of OnLive totaled just $4.8 million originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 15:00:00 EST. Don't think about it, just answer: Do you really read all of those agreements and legal texts that you need to scroll through when installing a game, signing up for a service or buying something online? Really? 7,500 people either don't, or they don't care about their eternal salvation, because UK video game retailer Gamestation could now legally own 7,500 souls if it wanted to. On April 1, it added a clause to its legal purchase agreement that granted the company "a non transferable option to claim, for now and for ever more, your immortal soul," and 7,500 game buyers happily clicked to agree.

The company was just April Fooling -- the claims have been legally renounced, and worried patrons can click through to the website to get their soul back (and a special discount code for their trouble). But next time, you should probably read the fine print a little more closely.
UK game retailer claims 7,500 souls with a legal agreement prank originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 16 Apr 2010 00:15:00 EST. Bad news for those of you who have picked up some classic arcade titles on Xbox Live and can't wait to play them in Microsoft's new Game Room: It looks like you will have to repurchase anything you want to play with your avatar in the 3D environment. Game Informer learned this recently from a Microsoft rep, who went on to say that it's because the Game Room titles are different from the XBLA versions -- in fact, it sounds like they're more old-school and not "revamped," as the rep puts it.

Fortunately, you will get a small price break: As previously announced, the games will sell for 400 ($5) to play on Xbox 360 and PC, 240 ($3) for the game on one platform or 40 ($0.50) for "two quarters'" worth of playtime. But for those of us who've already shelled out 400 for the Centipede/Millipede combo, it looks like we'll have to pull out the wallet yet again.
Retro XBLA games must be repurchased for the Xbox Game Room originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Jan 2010 22:20:00 EST. Interactive family, if a VG247 article is to be believed. Meanwhile, a follow-up report by GI.biz indicates that a Codemasters rep declined to comment, saying, "Everything is fine here." Indeed!

In some ways, we're surprised it took this long for the story to drop. After all, at this year's E3 all of Codemasters' titles were shown at the Warner Bros. booth. We've yet to hear back from Codemasters, but WBIE was kind enough to inform us that it doesn't "comment on rumors or speculation." Shame, really. We were hoping to hear "everything is fine" there too. If true, Warner Bros. is on the acquisition warpath, which it hasn't been shy about. Online game rental service GameFly has purchased Shacknews and its related websites, including FileShack. Shacknews announced GameFly plans to maintain the sites and even bolster with "additional resources." With an understanding that recent takeovers of beloved editorial institutions haven't gone so well, GameFly's co-founder, Sean Spector, states that the rental service isn't "looking to twist and turn the site into something else."

It's certainly an interesting move for the rental service to buy an editorial outlet and talk expansion, especially in this economy. Then again, GameFly's business doesn't seem to be hurting, as it continues to expand its rental service with a new distribution center in Seattle. In the words of a very wise book: Don't Panic.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in.]

GameFly purchases Shacknews originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 03 Feb 2009 22:07:00 EST. We've found there's actually quite a split amongst gamers: some folks just don't buy used games from stores (but will buy them from individuals), some won't buy them at all, while others never seem to pick up anything new. Of course, that last could be due to levels of poorness, but we won't go into that.
Wii Warm Up: Worn around the edges originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 12 Oct 2008 10:30:00 EST. If you include renting and borrowing, how many have you played? Of course, this leads us to also ask ... how many "big" games (defined as you like) do you want to see Nintendo releasing for the Wii in a year's time? How many would you like to see released each month? Or, let's try it this way: if new Zelda, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Metroid (we'll include Samus for the hell of it) and Mario games were all released within six months of one another, along with, let's say, a Kid Icarus game, would you buy them all (assuming you enjoy all those franchises)? What if, in that same period, we also saw games like Fatal Frame IV, Madworld, The Conduit, Samba de Amigo, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Dead Rising, and more, would you get them all? Right away? Or would it take you more than six months to accumulate the funds (and time) to play them all? Feel free to substitute with games you prefer if these aren't to your taste.

Of course, this isn't even considering WiiWare and Virtual Console releases.
Wii Warm Up: By the numbers originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 30 Jul 2008 09:00:00 EST. How many games do you think you bought this year? Maybe you know the exact total, or maybe you can only estimate -- either way, we want to know! Do you think it was more than you bought last year, or less? Now just think about all the money you spent. Hurts, doesn't it? Oh well ... at least it was on something substantial, that (hopefully) brought some extra bonus happiness.
DS Daily: Raw numbers originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 12 Dec 2007 09:00:00 EST. Even if times are tight, we'll make sure they end up in our collection somehow. Games cost money, though, and since we're not rich, we just can't buy them all. And yet, many if not most gamers seem to have a tendency to pick up games on day one, without so much as a rental or demo to validate their purchase. They read the previews and look at composite scores, and then essentially gamble that they'll enjoy whatever title they've purchased.

True, there are reviewers with whom people generally tend to agree. But how do you guys make your decisions, if not with a trial run first? Do you trust a specific company to deliver quality, or believe that a sequel to your favorite franchise will do justice to the series? Will you not purchase a game you were looking forward to if the game receives lower-than-expected ratings, such as the recent Sonic and the Secret Rings? Come one, come all, to the comments section! Old photo." src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/01/zomgoldpeoplez.jpg" />We here at the Fanboy highly doubt that any of you have escaped the "Old People" phenomenon, by which Luddites of various ages, locked into their ways, miraculously pick up a Wiimote and slug it out in Wii Bowling. Many are so enthusiastic that they inquire as to the availability (answer: no) and price of this wonderous machine. But, in truth, how many are actually going to purchase one? Many with whom we've spoken have enjoyed the Wii, but still have difficulty fathoming a lifestyle in which the games are played so often as to warrant a 250 dollar purchase. What percent of Wii units sold will eventually go to this demographic, and is it large enough to push Nintendo to first place?
Wii Warm Up: Those old folks originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 14 Jan 2007 09:00:00 EST. It will also buy 15,000 existing Gamepot shares from Aeria Inc., Gamepot's parent, a Reuters report stated.

Gamepot made a name for itself by publishing the popular online fantasy golf game, PangYa. I doubt this will have much of an impact for anything coming stateside, but it's encouraging to see Sony continue to take online gaming seriously.

(Via Gamasutra/Yahoo)
Sony to buy stake in Gamepot originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 16 Sep 2006 20:30:00 EST. If you'd like information on what other peripherals are coming out "Holiday 2006" (so sometime in the 4th quarter) and at what price, read on for more.
Continue reading $40 XBL Vision camera & UNO bundle detailed by MS source along with prices & dates for other 360 accessories

$40 XBL Vision camera & UNO bundle detailed by MS source along with prices & dates for other 360 accessories originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 02 Jun 2006 00:26:00 EST. Thanks to the latest edition of Nintendo's Japanese online mag, we finally get a portable peek intothe DS Lite.

Two Nintendo engineers who worked on the cuter DS sibling reveal how they pulled off the sveltenew look while maintaining things like usability, battery life, and cost.

Who knew that the new stylus wasmade "longer and wider to accommodate older users" (the Brain Age demographic who'd taken such ashine to the now shinier little system)? Durable, reliable hardware: it's what Nintendo does best. Let's hope theycontinue that trend with the Lite, as well as whatever other slicker iterations of the handheld that we're tempted topurchase -- or repurchase -- in the future.

[Thanks, Princess Zelda; also via DS Fanboy]

See also:
