<em>Quake</em>, id Software's 1996 classic, has been removed from Germany's list of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Department_for_Media_Harmful_to_Young_Persons#Legal_consequences">indexed</a> titles, a category created by the Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Department_for_Media_Harmful_to_Young_Persons">BPjM</a>) which makes games <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Department_for_Media_Harmful_to_Young_Persons#Legal_consequences">commercially equivalent</a> to porn.<br />
<br />
A historically significant milestone of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quake_%28video_game%29">technical and game design</a>, <em>Quake</em>'s freedom follows in the footsteps of the recently rated <em>DOOM</em> and <em>DOOM 2</em>.<br />
<br />
Bethesda Softworks, whose parent company <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/bethesda-parent-company-buys-id-software/">acquired</a> id Software in 2009, told us after the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/31/doom-and-doom-2-now-acceptable-in-germany-berlin-renamed-e1m1/"><em>DOOM</em> titles passed the BPjM</a> that an appeal of indexing is allowed after 10 years.<br />

<em>Team Fortress 2</em> just had a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/23/weta-workshop-takes-time-off-from-the-hobbit-to-design-for-tf2/">futuristic weapons update</a> with Dr. Grordbort's Infallible Aether Oscillators, and now Valve is going old-school. To celebrate QuakeCon 2011, which kicked off yesterday in Dallas, <em>TF2 </em>is getting a bevy of Bethesda and id Software gear as part of the <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/">QuakeCon Steam Sale</a> (a different deal each day!). The following items correspond with different daily deals, but are all available through 10 a.m. EDT August 8:<br />

Today's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/steam">Steam</a> deals are a doozy if you're looking to pick something up on the cheap, including <em>Dead Space </em>for $6.80 and the aforementioned discounts on all <em>Brothers in Arms</em> games and <em>The</em> <em>Quake Collection</em> -- the latter being a bundle of all three <em>Quake </em>games along with a bunch of DLC. <br />
<br />
Or, if you've still got some generosity left in the ol' holiday tank, you could gift somebody a copy of <em>Kane &amp; Lynch 2: Dog Days</em> for $5 but, honestly, that'd just be <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/17/review-kane-and-lynch-2-dog-days/">a waste of $5</a>. Instead, we suggest you hit the jump for less friendship-questioning gaming deals.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/30/brothers-in-arms-quake-collection-discounts-highlight-todays-s/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Brothers in Arms, Quake collection discounts highlight today's Steam Holiday Sale</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/30/brothers-in-arms-quake-collection-discounts-highlight-todays-s/">Brothers in Arms, Quake collection discounts highlight today's Steam Holiday Sale</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 30 Dec 2010 03:30:00 EST. Yes, <em>Quake</em> has been around for some time now, but that doesn't make this achievement any less incredible: A team of trained <em>Quake</em> speed-runners have <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhzXKMqZBBc">completed the game</a> (while finding 100 percent of its secret areas) on its hardest difficulty in under one of our Earth hours.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/30/quake-completed-in-under-an-hour/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Quake completed in under an hour</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/30/quake-completed-in-under-an-hour/">Quake completed in under an hour</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 30 Dec 2010 02:30:00 EST. We'll forgive you if you've forgotten that <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/quake-arena-arcade">Quake Arena Arcade</a></em> was even coming to Xbox Live Arcade. After all, it was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/03/id-announces-quake-arena-for-xbox-live-arcade/">announced</a> in 2007 and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/25/quake-3-arena-for-xbla-is-very-close-to-being-finished/">"very close" to being done</a> in 2009. Whatever that final development hurdle was, it must've been a <em>whopper</em>, but it's been overcome and the game will arrive ... next week. December 15, to be exact.<br />
<br />
Bethesda won't be announcing pricing until just before the game's release, but it'll surely cost less than a <a href="http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&amp;_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&amp;_nkw=dreamcast&amp;_sacat=See-All-Categories">second-hand Dreamcast</a>, broadband adapter and copy of <em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUvRPLp4dqM">Quake 3 Arena</a></em>.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/quake-arena-arcade/">Quake Arena Arcade</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/quake-arena-arcade/#2117864"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/07/quake-xbla-1024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/quake-arena-arcade/#3667086"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/12/qaa---10-31---screenshot-05-sp_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/quake-arena-arcade/#3667087"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/12/qaa---10-31---screenshot-10-sp_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/quake-arena-arcade/#3667088"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/12/qaa---10-31---screenshot-11-sp_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/10/quake-arena-arcade-finally-arrives-on-xbla-dec-15/">Quake Arena Arcade finally arrives on XBLA Dec. 15</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 10 Dec 2010 14:30:00 EST. Browser-based frag-em-up <em>Quake Live</em> keeps chugging along, as id's gone and announced the addition of some new premium content. Through "Premium Pak 4," players can access two new maps (Evolution and Three Story), along with 20 new premium awards and some advanced server mechanics, allowing players to customize matches by setting certain modifiers on or off -- runes, gravity, weapon switch speed and more. Finally, the introductory match against Crash has been removed for new players, who will instead be "placed in an assessment period before skill matching begins to take place." We're sure Crash is most happy about that new feature.<br />
<br />
If you're lost on all of this talk of "premium," then you likely missed out on the new subscriptions. Read up on that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/06/all-grown-up-quake-live-out-of-beta-got-a-job-offering-subscr/">here</a> and be sure to hit the link below if you're looking for the full patch notes. Or just hit up <em>Quake Live</em> if you're looking to shoot some stuff. Don't be embarrassed: we all feel that way every now and again.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/17/quake-live-premium-pak-4-update-adds-new-maps-new-server-sett/">Quake Live 'Premium Pak 4' update adds new maps, new server settings</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 21:00:00 EST. How incredibly appropriate! The final day of Steam's <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/sale/QuakeCon">QuakeCon 2010 sale</a> has resulted in a 75 percent discount on every <em>Quake</em> game on the platform. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em> Rage</em></a> represents a rather large milestone for Carmack's id team. Not only is it the first game to use id Tech 4, it's the first id game to be published by new owner Bethesda. It's also the first new IP from the team in over a decade, since 1996's release of <em>Quake</em>. If a recent interview in the Official PlayStation Magazine (via <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=259706">CVG</a>) is to be believed, it's likely that the <em>new</em> new IP from id will be just as far away.<br />
<br />
"I doubt we're going to do another IP," Carmack told OPM. "We want to support <em>Wolfenstein</em>, <em>Doom</em> and <em>Quake</em> -- and hopefully we can add <em>Rage</em> onto that. ... Obviously, if <em>Rage</em> is a success then we'll want to do a <em>Rage 2</em>." Considering the lengthy development cycles at id (evidenced by the currently-MIA <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/doom-4"><em>Doom 4</em></a>) who knows when the next new IP will bubble out of the company?<br />
<br />
Especially with that <em>Commander Keen</em> reboot getting in the way, right?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/13/ids-carmack-wants-to-support-current-franchises-new-ips-unlike/">id's Carmack wants to support current franchises, new IPs unlikely</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Aug 2010 21:00:00 EST. Worried about <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxAndD9lVqM">Stranger Danger</a> in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/quake-live"><em>Quake Live</em></a>? Well, the still-in-beta browser-based frag-em-up has been updated, allowing would-be <em>murderers</em> the ability to invite friends to their match or join their pals' sessions currently in progress. Why you would want to hurt your friends in this manner, we'll never know.<br />
<br />
On a less backstabbery note, this update brings another interesting change that's currently only in private testing: the "Start a Match" feature. This particular function grants leagues and players the ability to start their own servers. Then, you can set the game to have no password, enable invite-only servers and even designate your own map cycle. Sadly, there's no word as of when this will be available to all participants.<br />
<br />

Our biggest gripe with Facebook "games" most times is the lack of actual gameplay involved in them. Things like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mafia-wars">Mafia Wars</a></em> seem much more like stat management spreadsheets couched in a social networking medium rather than games with a social media component. That said, it seems that 3G Studios is bringing a full on 3D shooter to the website in <em><a href="http://www.bravearms.com/">Brave Arms</a></em>, announced this week and set for a March launch. <br />
<br />
As the screenshot above corroborates, <em>Brave Arms</em> puts players in the first-person perspective for a <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/team-fortress-2">Team Fortress 2</a></em>-eque cartoony death match. CEO James Kosta says in the press release announcing the game that, "Our new title, <em>Brave Arms</em>, will bring first-person shooter games to the masses." Snarkier, meaner bloggers might mention games like <em>Doom</em>, <em>Quake</em>, <em>Halo</em>, or <em>Call of Duty</em> at this point, but we wouldn't do that. Nope. No sir. We'd just say something like, "How has EA not jumped on Facebook with <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/battlefield-heroes">Battlefield Heroes</a></em>, nonetheless id Software/Bethesda with <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/quake-live">Quake Live</a></em>?" As you might imagine with this type of free-to-play fare, there will be some form of microtransactions, though nothing has been explicitly detailed just yet. <br />

<br />
This time of year is usually one of peace and safe comfort for just about everyone. The same can't be said for the land of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/quake-live"><em>Quake Live</em></a>, where id Software has <a href="http://www.quakelive.com/#preview/winter2009">injected some Yuletide spirit</a> into the browser-based frag-em-up's usual industrial surroundings. For two weeks, players can enjoy a Christmas-themed remake of <em>Team Arena</em> map "Distant Screams," now named "Silent Night."<br />
<br />
This update doesn't add particularly festive weapons to the mix, but the fresh coat of winter wonderland paint is certainly welcome. Nothing tops off the Christmas spirit tank like a little rocket play beneath <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/quake-live-christmas-2009/2559769/full">giant candy canes</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/quake-live-christmas-2009/2559768/full">a star-filled sky</a>, after all.<br />

<a href="http://androidandme.com/2009/12/news/id-software-frags-doom-quake-and-wolfenstein-ports-for-android/">Android and Me</a> points out some ports of popular id games were once available on your snazzy superphone, including <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/quake"><em>Quake</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wolfenstein-3d"><em>Wolfenstein</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/doom"><em>Doom</em></a>. They didn't last long, however, as Zenimax has managed to get the games pulled from Google's Android Market service due to copyright infringement. <br />
<br />
It's only natural for ZeniMax to want to get the titles pulled and doubly so if the publisher is thinking about releasing id's classics on the platform, though that's just speculation on our part based on id's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/03/doom-classic-released-for-iphone-and-ipod-touch/">readiness</a> to work on the competing iPhone platform. Head past the break to check out some footage of what you missed out on, courtesy of the unofficial Android version of <em>Doom</em>.<br />
<br />
We've asked ZeniMax to comment on any commercial plans for these titles on Android and to clarify the nature of <em>Doom's</em> open source codebase and why it was included in this takedown request. <br />
<br />
[<strong>Update</strong>: A ZeniMax spokesperson got back to use, writing: "We did issue a DMCA takedown notice to the Android store to remove the unofficial <em>Doom</em>, <em>Wolfenstein</em> and <em>Quake</em> games as they contain our trademarks and copyrighted assets, including graphics, artwork, storylines and audio. Open source relates to the underlying engine source code, not to a game's content, trademarks and assets, all of which remain proprietary. If the game was a total conversion and did not use any of our trademarks or assets, that would be fine. But none of our data can be repackaged and nobody is authorized to make a <em>Doom</em>, <em>Wolfenstein</em> or <em>Quake</em> product."]<br />

Despite our best intentions, we at Joystiq have been pretty lax about sinking the hours we <em>thought</em> we would into the browser-based <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/quake-live"><em>Quake Live</em></a>. But perhaps we'll be more dilligent about it now that the whole gang can get involved. Via the <a href="http://www.quakelive.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31851">game's forums</a>, id announced Tuesday that support had been added to the game for Linux and Mac users<br />
<br />
Currently, Mac players are limited to playing through Safari, though id says that the Firefox/Mac combo will soon be a workable configuration.<br />

In addition to announcing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/14/mac-and-linux-users-joining-quake-live-community-august-18/">support for <em>Quake Live</em> on Mac and Linux</a>, John Carmack admitted that the current ad-based model wasn't exactly working for the game. To assuage the problem, id Software will soon be offering a subscription model in addition to the free-to-play model currently in place.<br /><br />"The in-game advertising stuff has not been big business .... [it's] not going to be able to carry the project," Carmack said. Dually, he noted that while a subscription service will be offered, the game will never go exclusively "pay-to-play." According to <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/59998">Shacknews</a>, the subscription model will allow players to create and host private server matches.This all sounds good to us -- now maybe all the hardcore <em>Quake Live</em> players will play in private servers and allow us to get a single shot off.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/15/carmack-says-ad-based-model-not-working-for-quake-live/">Carmack says ad-based model not working for Quake Live</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 15 Aug 2009 18:30:00 EST. When Raven Software's long-in-development <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Wolfenstein/">Wolfenstein</a></em> (remember when it was an Xbox 360 timed exclusive back in 2005?) finally hits store shelves this August, it'll mark the end of an era ...<br /><br />... oh no! Not of <em>Wolfenstein</em> games - there are plenty more of those coming - but of outside developers working on id Software's hallowed franchises. John Carmack <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/25/interview-ids-john-carmack-and-zenimax-ceo-on-the-acquisition/">told Joystiq today</a> that bringing external development back in-house at id is "exactly what's going to be happening." Carmack says that while id's had some hits (<em>Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory </em>springs to mind) and some misses (<em>Enemy Territory: Quake Wars springs to mind</em>) the externally developed titles haven't "had the same record that our internally developed titles have." We'd have to agree with him there.<br /><br />With the lead team cranking on <em>Rage</em> for EA Partners, they created a second development team to work on <em>Doom 4</em>, with a still-formative third team currently toiling away on <em>Quake Live</em>. "We'll have three teams," Carmack told us. "We'll have <em>Wolfenstein</em>, <em>Doom</em>, <em>Quake</em>, and <em>Rage</em> and one of them will be taking a vacation each cycle and that will depend on what we want to be doing each time." So don't worry, you'll have plenty of all of the above to go around.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/25/id-software-bringing-external-development-back-in-house/">id Software bringing external development back in-house</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 25 Jun 2009 19:00:00 EST. We understand that much of the appeal for id's free-to-play browser shooter <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/quake-live">Quake Live</a></em> comes from the rich veins of nostalgia that lie therein -- but that doesn't mean we don't expect the game to improve upon the franchise's roots. Fortunately, id Software just <a href="http://www.quakelive.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22698">clued in their forumgoers</a> to a few welcome additions coming to <em>Live</em> in an update that's due out mid-May -- an update that will bring new maps, tutorial modes and better mid-match team balancing.<br /><br />However, the forum post also mentioned a ton of changes they're planning on rolling out in the near future, like the addition of Mac and Linux support, private servers and matches, and the revivification of awards and leaderboards. For further details on their plans for improvement, check out <a href="http://www.quakelive.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22698">id's latest forum update</a>!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/05/02/quake-live-to-launch-major-new-updates-soon/">Big Download</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/03/quake-live-update-adding-new-maps-mac-and-linux-support-coming/">Quake Live update adding new maps, Mac and Linux support coming soon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 03 May 2009 13:00:00 EST. When it comes to digital distribution on consoles, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/american-mcgee">American McGee</a> feels that the model "still has some evolving to do." The game designer -- whose credits include <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/alice">Alice</a> </em>as well as <em>Doom </em>and <em>Quake -- </em>recently told <a href="http://www.geek.com/articles/games/interview-american-mcgee-talks-about-alice-grimm-and-game-development-in-shanghai-20090421/">Geek.com</a> that while his ambitious 24-episode experiment <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/grimm">Grimm</a> </em>could be ported over to such platforms as Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network, the process needs some work before that would happen.<br /><br />"Porting this sort of stuff is straightforward," claimed McGee, who added that "the biggest issue" sits with the platforms' content approval and distribution model. XBLA's certification process has long proved a cumbersome hurdle for developers, with McGee noting,"When a single title might take months to get through review and approval (take <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/braid"><em>Braid</em></a>, as an example), pushing 24 episodes through would translate to years of approval process."<br /><br />McGee is currently spinning his creative wheels on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/19/dice-2009-ea-announces-american-mcgees-alice-2/">recently announced</a> sequel to <em>Alice</em>, a property that's also been mentioned in movie circles <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/02/08/update-on-alice-and-max-payne-movies/">for some time</a>. The rights currently sit with producer Scott Faye, who was responsible for 2008's big screen take on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/max-payne"><em>Max Payne</em></a>, a film McGee lambasted, saying, "I wasn't able to sit through the entire thing ... I just couldn't connect to the film version." You, sir, were <em>not </em>alone.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3173892">1UP</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/24/american-mcgee-says-xbla-psn-need-to-evolve/">American McGee says XBLA, PSN need to evolve</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 24 Apr 2009 10:00:00 EST. Imagine our surprise today when we tried to log into <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/quake-live"><em>Quake Live</em></a> for our usual 10 a.m. session of <em>noob-fraggin' therapy</em>, only to discover the image above. id has decided to do away with rocket jumping and replace it with <em>epic mount riding</em>, as it has revealed <a href="http://www.quakelive.com/"><em>World of Quake Live</em></a><em>. </em>Much like the game of a <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com">similar name</a>, this title promises epic mounts with up to four weapon slots (you can stack them with four BFGs!), as well as a new leveling system. With another <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/GDC-2009">GDC already underway</a>, a new contender has announced plans to jump into the console market ... well, sort of. Enter Tectoy and its 3D network-based console, the Zeebo, which relies purely on downloadable games (from the grave, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/07/the-73-million-dollar-phantom-disaster/">Phantom</a> says, "Sup?"). The Zeebo will reportedly launch in Brazil this July and then in other similar markets in the following months. <br /> <br /> At launch, the console will <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/12/tectoys-zeebo-gaming-console-to-run-on-3g-network-in-brazil/">reportedly</a> come preloaded with the mobile games <em>Quake</em>,<em> Evil Prey</em> and <em>Action Hero 3D</em>. Before any of us could cry foul, the manufacturers have said the Zeebo isn't meant to compete with the Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3. The console will have a constant, free-of-charge connection to a 3G network courtesy of Tectoy's partner, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claro_(mobile_phone_network)">Claro</a>, one of the largest cellular providers in the Americas. According to the console's specs <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/16/more-details-of-tectoys-zeebo-3g-gaming-console-emerge?icid=sphere_blogsmith_inpage_engadget">revealed at Engadget</a>, the system will focus less on power and more on providing content to developing and emerging regions -- specifically through downloadable channels to combat rampant piracy.<br /> <br />Capcom, EA Mobile, Namco Networks, PopCap Games and THQ have <a href="http://www.zeeboinc.com/#News25">already confirmed support</a> for the emerging console. Games for Tectoy's Zeebo will range in price from 7 to 30BRL (about $7 to $13) with the console priced at 599BRL (about $264) -- a bargain compared to prices of current generation consoles in the target markets.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/24/gdc09-introducing-the-zeebo-tectoys-3g-console-venture/">GDC09: Introducing the Zeebo, Tectoy's 3G console venture</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Mar 2009 02:00:00 EST. Gone is the nuisance of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/quake-live">Quake Live</a></em>'s pesky queue, as word hits <a href="http://twitter.com/quakelive/status/1275292311">via the <em>Quake Live</em> twitter feed</a> that id has removed the long lines that have plagued the still-in-beta game since <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/24/easy-headline-alert-quake-live-public-beta-is-live/">it opened to the public</a> last week. We hopped on to give it a look ourselves and id has delivered. Jumping into a game only took us a few seconds and we found the experience of playing was nothing short of stable. So, head on over and <a href="http://www.quakelive.com/">frag somebody</a> already!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/03/psa-you-can-actually-play-quake-live-now/">PSA: You can actually play Quake Live now</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Mar 2009 17:45:00 EST. Alright, enough. Stop. You can lay off the F5 button and cease your (frankly) childish refreshing of <a href="http://www.quakelive.com/#home">www.quakelive.com</a>. The public beta of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Quake-Live/">Quake Live</a> - <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/20/quake-live-public-beta-coming-feb-24/">promised to be available today</a> - is finally live and, unless you live somewhere not in the vicinity of Dallas-based id's timezone, it's still today and not tomorrow yet. Our advice to the Windows gamers reading this, in bullet point format for easy skimmability. <br /><br />

Open betas are all the rage, and next week, id Software's free, browser-based FPS, <em>Quake Live</em>, is getting in on the trend. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/03/quake-zero-announced-free-browser-based-quake-3/">First announced</a> as <em>Quake Zero </em>in August 2007, the game is derived from the classic <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quake_III_Arena"><em>Quake III Arena</em></a>. The <a href="http://www.quakelive.com/">official site</a> has been updated with a countdown (so <em>in</em>), wallpapers and the February 24 date. <br /><br /><em>Quake Live</em> is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/20/gdc08-quake-zero-becomes-quake-live/">ad-supported</a>, with levels containing prominently placed billboards. The game is currently a Windows-only affair, with id promising that Mac and Linux versions are in the works. While everyone is welcome to join the open beta, we're betting on the registration servers having a little trouble come next Tuesday. F5 keys at the ready!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/02/20/quake-live-finally-launches-open-beta-next-week/">Big Download</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/20/quake-live-public-beta-coming-feb-24/">Quake Live public beta coming Feb. 24</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 20 Feb 2009 14:00:00 EST. So, according to John Carmack, id has turned down offers from publishers who wanted to create massively multiplayer version of <em>Quake</em>. Why? Well, to put it pretty bluntly, Carmack (and, by extension, id) doesn't have any interest in making one.<br /><br />So, what do you think the biggest news here is? Is it that this a <em>Quake </em>MMO isn't going to happen? We don't think so. We're far more concerned that some publisher somewhere thought that making a <em>Quake </em>MMO was a good idea. Dearest game publishers, please don't think that "MMO" actually stands for "Tons of Free Money." It's because of that kind of thinking that Richard Garriott had to pick up a second job at Toys 'R' Us.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/05/carmack-turned-down-quake-mmo-offers/">Carmack turned down Quake MMO offers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 05 Aug 2008 23:30:00 EST. John Carmack loves his iPhone, so much so that the id Software co-founder has been spending a lot of time lately thinking of ways to bring his studio's tech-hungry game development to Apple's pricey portable. <a href="http://www.forbes.com/technology/2008/07/24/doom-iphone-morris-tech-personal-cx_cm_0725doom.html">Forbes</a> reports that Carmack, who still kicks himself for not having a game available for the device at launch, is currently planning to bring one of the dev's existing franchises to the iPhone as a "graphical tour de force." <br /><br />But as for which one, the company isn't saying just yet, though given that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/15/id-software-and-fountainhead-create-id-mobile/">recently launched</a> id Mobile division already has <em>Doom RPG</em> and the forthcoming <em>Wolfenstein RPG</em> to its credit, we wouldn't be at all surprised if Carmack will bring <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/quake">Quake</a> </em>or some flavor of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rage">Rage</a> </em>to the small screen as well. What's more, he's apparently considering the idea of tackling the MMO market on the iPhone down the line, though he admits that he's being "conservative" and doesn't "want to be in a bet-the-company situation" just yet. Even so, as Carmack looks for ways to push the phone's visual fidelity, we take solace in the fact that for once we won't have to upgrade our video card just to play with his latest toy.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/carmack-planning-iphone-graphical-tour-de-force/">Carmack planning iPhone 'graphical tour de force'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 28 Jul 2008 16:30:00 EST. As you'd expect, the visuals are decidedly simple, but still stylish nonetheless. We noticed a few instances of gameshow-like billboards peppered throughout levels; while they simply read "<span style="font-style: italic;">Quake Live</span>" in the video, it's likely these are placeholders for in-game advertising.<br /><br />The trailer beckons viewers to <a href="http://www.quakelive.com">QuakeLive.com</a> for more info, but the site is still serving the sole purpose of a gateway for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/16/quake-live-accepting-beta-sign-ups/">beta signups</a>. From what's shown in the footage, it will eventually become a very robust matching and ranking component of the game. With <a href="http://www.quakecon.org/about.php">QuakeCon</a> kicking off in just a couple of weeks we expect to find out more details soon.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/quake-arena-trailer-shakes-up-web-games/">Quake Arena trailer shakes up web games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Jul 2008 01:30:00 EST. There's deals to be dealt with, money to be saved, so why waste precious time, let's just get to it!<br />
<br />
This week, over at Best Buy, they're offering <a href="http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8724222&amp;st=rainbow+six+vegas&amp;lp=2&amp;type=product&amp;cp=1&amp;id=1200703057436"><em>RSV2</em></a> for $40, <a href="http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8649359&amp;st=unreal+tournament+3&amp;lp=3&amp;type=product&amp;cp=1&amp;id=1195599475516"><em>UT3</em></a>, <a href="http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8701452&amp;st=quake+wars&amp;lp=2&amp;type=product&amp;cp=1&amp;id=1199494972536"><em>Quake Wars</em></a>, <a href="http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8868914&amp;st=deadliest+catch&amp;lp=5&amp;type=product&amp;cp=1&amp;id=1210290068021"><em>Deadliest Catch</em></a> (w00t!) and <em><a href="http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8770868&amp;st=call+duty+4&amp;lp=6&amp;type=product&amp;cp=1&amp;id=1203815922748">CoD4 GOTY</a> </em>for $50. And that's about it. Sadly, Circuit City doesn't have a darn thing to offer Xbox 360 fanboys either which is, uhh ... sad? Now that we look at it, Target stores don't even have any 360 deals, not a single copy of a game on sale. Another major bummer. You know, this has to be one of the worst Sunday deal roundups, like, EVAR! Who would have thought that getting <em>RSV2 </em>for $40 would be a deal highlight? Stupid retail conglomerates, don't you know that all we want is money savings on 360 games and don't care that you have <a href="http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html?asin=B00004RC6R&amp;tag=tcom-gbexpo71-20">popcorn makers</a> on sale?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/20/a-sad-and-scarce-sunday-deals-roundup/">A sad and scarce Sunday deals roundup</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 20 Jul 2008 12:30:00 EST. If you've been waiting for someone to hold your hand through the Wii homebrew process, the folks at <a href="http://wiihd.fortunz.com/news:062408-wiihds-homebrew-guide">WiiHD</a> have created the perfect guide for you, complete with step-by-step instructions, a downloadable starter kit with everything you need, and a video (embedded after the break) that shows you the process from installation, all the way to a trial version of <em>Quake I</em>. It doesn't get much easier than this.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/24/wiihds-homebrew-guide-hacking-doesnt-get-much-easier-than-thi/">Engadget</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/one-of-the-easiest-wii-homebrew-guides-youll-find/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>One of the easiest Wii homebrew guides you'll find</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/one-of-the-easiest-wii-homebrew-guides-youll-find/">One of the easiest Wii homebrew guides you'll find</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Jun 2008 01:00:00 EST. As of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/22/welcome-back-twilight-hack/">right now</a>, homebrewers have the upper hand against Nintendo, and it is possible to run <a href="http://nintendowiifanboy.com/category/homebrew">whatever you feel like</a> running on the Wii you own -- even on a recently updated Wii. Now would be a good time to go try some of the stuff that people have come up with. But maybe you feel like you don't know where to start, or don't have whatever technical skills are required to make Wii <a href="http://wiihd.fortunz.com/news:062108-wii-quake"><em>Quake</em></a> happen.<br /><br />Much like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/24/homebrew-week-the-recapping/">we did</a> on DS Fanboy for homebrew on that system, WiiHD has created a step-by-step guide to Wii homebrew, starting with the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/14/twilight-hack-now-supports-sd-loading/">Twilight Hack</a>. Follow these instructions, and you'll have the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/17/must-see-tv-homebrew-channel/">Homebrew Channel</a>, ready and waiting to run your programs. If <em>following three pages of instructions</em> is too much for your fast-paced lifestyle, they've even put together a Starter Kit containing all the software you'll need, including the Twilight Hack and Homebrew Channel files, <em>Quake,</em> and an Amstrad emulator with public-domain games.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/24/wiihds-homebrew-guide-hacking-doesnt-get-much-easier-than-thi/">Engadget</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/26/wii-homebrew-guide-go-from-zero-to-quake-in-no-time/">Wii homebrew guide: go from zero to Quake in no time</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Jun 2008 09:30:00 EST. This very detailed Simpsons <em>Quake III </em>mod is pretty old (video added December 2007), but we never covered it then, and the video is too pretty to miss. It's a great day to be a first-person shooter fan. ... Well, more specifically, it's a great day to be a first-person shooter fan who's also totally broke. Not only did (as we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/21/battlefield-bad-company-demo-arriving-june-5-for-some/">previously warned you</a>) the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Battlefield-Bad-Company/">Battlefield: Bad Company</a> </em>demo go up over the weekend, but today we get the Xbox Live demo for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Quake-Wars/">Enemy Territory: Quake Wars</a></em>.<em> </em><br />
<br />
So, how is <em>Quake Wars</em>? Well, we haven't taken it for a spin yet, but <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/30/metareview-quake-wars-vs-quake-wars/">the reviews say</a> it's at least better than the PS3 version, even if that's not saying a lot. Give both of them a spin for yourself and let us know.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/09/demorama-battlefield-bad-company-quake-wars-demos-on-xbox-liv/">Demorama: Battlefield: Bad Company, Quake Wars demos on Xbox Live</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 09 Jun 2008 10:00:00 EST. We say this not because we love XBLM demos and would actually enjoy playing some <em>Quake Wars</em>, but because the advertisement says that you can "download the demo now from Xbox Live Marketplace". Don't hurt yourself though, we already checked the XBLM and there is not <em>Quake Wars</em> demo to be found. But we say it'll be up soon, because we have faith in online advertisements and their validity. We are trusting fanboys.<br />

<br />
As part of the Live Weekend fun that starts next Friday, June 6th, there will be a special <a href="http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/e/etquakewars/liveweekend/playandwin.htm"><em>Quake Wars</em> Play &amp; Win</a> where hourly prizes will be awarded and Xbox 360 Elites will be given away. Also, a few of the id developers will be online Friday evening to participate in a <a href="http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/calendar/gamewithdevelopers/2008/0606-quakewars.htm">Game with Developers</a> event and show <em>Quake Wars</em> fans how to really play the game. Finally, there will be a weekend long <a href="http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/e/etquakewars/liveweekend/leaderboard.htm">Leaderboard Tournament</a> where even more prizes will be awarded including an all expense paid trip to QUAKECON this July. Now go sign up and be prepared for the <em>Quake </em>funnery that'll be going down next weekend.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/31/strogg-unite-quake-wars-live-weekend/">Strogg unite! "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/18/enemy-territory-quake-wars-a-tale-of-two-different-ports/"><em>A Tale of Two (different) Ports</em></a>" has reached its (anti-) climactic conclusion, as <em>Enemy Territory: Quake Wars</em> was released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this week. Development of the console ports was fractured between two different studios, and when we checked in on the games six weeks ago, Underground Development's PS3 version was <em>lagging</em> behind -- yet refused to be delayed. And so, broken and stuttering, the port pushed on, crossing the finish line (into the retail market) hand in hand with its Xbox 360 counterpart. A tie then? Clearly not:<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/30/metareview-quake-wars-vs-quake-wars/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Metareview -- Quake Wars vs. Quake Wars</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/30/metareview-quake-wars-vs-quake-wars/">Metareview -- Quake Wars vs. Quake Wars</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 30 May 2008 19:00:00 EST. As our American readers know it's Memorial Day and our fearless leader is spending time with his family so he asked Dustin or myself to take care of his weekly "Shipping This Week" post. Considering how well received it was the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/21/ask-x3f-dustin-hijacked-this-edition/">last time Dustin did one of Richard's regular features</a>, I took the reigns. As a Canadian I'm not entirely sure what Memorial Day is. Okay, you can pretty much guess what it is based on what it's called. According to Dustin it's a day when American's memorialize stuff, but that just makes it sound like there's a lot of scrapbooking involved. Either way, Happy Memorial Day!<br />

This week brings us two new, yet old, games. id Software and Splash Damage's class-based PC shooter, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Quake-Wars">Enemy Territory: Quake Wars</a></em>, hits the Xbox 360 in a port by Nerve Software. While the PC version landed at retail around heavy-hitters like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/orange-box">The Orange Box</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/cod4">Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare</a></em>, <em>Quake Wars</em> finds itself on the Xbox during a gaming release lull and hopes to catch a wider audience the second time around. Also hitting the Xbox 360 is Capcom's definitive version of <em>Lost Planet</em> with all new content including the ability to play as the evil Akrid. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Lost-Planet-colonies">Lost Planet Extreme Condition: Colonies Edition</a></em>, a game with a name so long I had to eat a sandwich in the middle of typing it for fear of losing strength, lands tomorrow for the price of a platinum release. So there you go, two new/old titles hit the Xbox. Planning on picking up either?<br />

And yes, we promise Richard will be back to tell you about the games of the week next time.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/26/shipping-this-week-stroggbad-and-akrid/">Shipping this week: Stroggbad &amp; Akrid</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 26 May 2008 14:00:00 EST. Achievement fans rest easy. Thanks to the crack team of soldiers (pictured above) we've found the full list of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/quake-wars">Enemy Territory: Quake Wars</a></em> achievements. The elusive achievement list was hiding out at <a href="http://www.xbox360achievements.org/game/enemy-territory-quake-wars/achievements/">Xbox360Achievements.org</a> and have since been rescued from danger. Promising to soon line your Gamerscore pockets, these points cover everything from completing the multiple campaign modes (North America, Europe, Africa and Pacific) to online ranking achievements that most of us will never get.<br />

As for these guys? If you have a problem. If no one else can help, and if you can find them ... maybe you can hire, the <em>Quake-Team</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/13/quake-wars-achievements-rescued/">Enemy Territory achievements rescued</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 13 May 2008 15:00:00 EST.
