Mark Jacobs' unforeseen exit from <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Warhammer-Online/">Warhammer Online</a></em> developer Mythic, a departure made known during the revelation of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/mythic-and-bioware-rolled-into-one-mythics-mark-jacobs-departs/">the BioWare/Mythic merger</a>, left many fans and colleagues <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/mark-jacobs-departure-leaves-mythic-employees-shocked/">stunned and confused</a>. In a lengthy post on his personal blog, Jacobs <a href="http://onlinegamesareanichemarket.wordpress.com/2009/06/25/all-things-must-come-to-an-end/">explained the reasoning for his evacuation</a> -- he actually left the company early in May, when EA informed him that "they wanted to make some changes within the Games Label." Since that day, he's been out of contact from the rest of the Mythic team.<br /><br />However, he's not ready to talk smack about the gaming industry juggernaut that forced the changes upon his studio -- Jacobs explained, "Over my 23 years of making games professionally I have refrained from attacking the competition, former and/or current partners, other game developers," and so on. You're a stronger man than us, Mr. Jacobs.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.massively.com/2009/06/26/mark-jacobs-on-his-departure-from-mythic-and-ea/">Massively</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/26/mark-jacobs-explains-departure-from-mythic-and-ea/">Mark Jacobs explains departure from Mythic and EA</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 26 Jun 2009 18:45:00 EST. If done correctly, quitting your job can be the absolute <em>coolest</em> thing you could ever do. When else do you get to air out hostilities you've harbored for countless years, impress cohorts with theatrical gesticulations and possibly, depending on the awfulness of your workplace environment, relieve yourself in a coffee pot?<br /><br />One Mr. Jarrad recently <a href="http://www.farbs.org/Message.html">took a less <em>disgusting</em> route</a> to resignation from his position at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=2K%20Australia">2K Australia</a> -- he programmed a short (but sweet) Flash game, one which informs his employers that he's putting in his two week notice with grace and politeness. Also, with Mario. It may lack the panache of <em>tainted Folgers</em>, but it's still pretty darn amusing (and, more importantly, legal).<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://supererogatory.tumblr.com/post/101008824/ivanovitch-you-have-to-try-this-jarrad-our-2k">superannuation</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/28/2k-australia-developer-quits-job-with-the-help-of-mario/">2K Australia developer quits job with the help of Mario</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Apr 2009 14:00:00 EST. Against all logic, Shafeek decided to mark his 29th year of life with the complete abandonment of his favorite hobby, video games. <br /><br />He's getting close to the 365-day finish line, and in the interim he's managed to read more, learn some recipes, travel, run a half-marathon and catalog all his progress on his blog <a href="http://iampaused.blogspot.com/">Paused</a>. We recently caught up with Shafeek via an email exchange to find out why he quit, when he's going back and from where he draws his <em>staggering, iron resolve</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/12/joystiq-interview-how-to-quit-games-for-a-year/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq Interview: How to quit games for a year</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/12/joystiq-interview-how-to-quit-games-for-a-year/">Joystiq Interview: How to quit games for a year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 12 Dec 2008 16:47:00 EST. While we haven't been able to get in touch with Davis directly, a source close to Davis inside Gamespot told us, on condition of anonymity, that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/jeff-gerstmann">controversial firing of editorial director Jeff Gerstmann</a> was the catalyst behind the decision. The planned departure follows similar decisions by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/07/long-time-freelancer-leaves-gamespot-over-gerstmann-gate/">freelancer Frank Provo </a>and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/14/gamespot-staffer-alex-navarro-quits-in-wake-of-gerstmann-gate/">staffer Alex Navarro</a> in the wake of the scandal.<br /><br />In a <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/users/Ryan/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-25235387">Dec. 1 blog post</a>, Davis spoke of his close relationship with Gerstmann since before he started writing for Gamespot in 2000. "Jeff Gerstmann has been a significant figure in both my personal and professional life for a long, long time," he wrote. "By my recollection, we were fairly fast friends, though I was also kind of pushy about it." The pair played together as part of alternative rap group <a href="http://suburbanallstars.com/">Suburban All-Stars</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/04/gamespot-exodus-continues-ryan-davis-to-leave/">Gamespot exodus continues: Ryan Davis to leave</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 04 Feb 2008 15:55:00 EST. " Certainly [the decision to leave] had a lot to do with the whole Jeff [Gerstmann] situation. ... I wouldn't have left if this situation hadn't gone down the way it did. ... Sometimes you just realize a place isn't for you anymore, you know?"<br /><br />Navarro has been a mainstay on the site since early 2003, writing <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/users/AlexN/contributions">hundreds of reviews</a> and appearing regularly on video podcast <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/pages/features/hotspot/index.php">The Hotspot</a>. His last day at the site will be Jan. 24.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/14/gamespot-staffer-alex-navarro-quits-in-wake-of-gerstmann-gate/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gamespot staffer Alex Navarro quits in wake of Gerstmann-gate</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/14/gamespot-staffer-alex-navarro-quits-in-wake-of-gerstmann-gate/">Gamespot staffer Alex Navarro quits in wake of Gerstmann-gate</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 14 Jan 2008 08:00:00 EST.
