GamersGate is hosting <a href="http://www.gamersgate.com/games?q=bethesdaweekend&amp;prio=relevance">a big sale on Bethesda titles</a> this weekend, featuring games from the last few years of the company's history on sale for a fraction of the usual price. <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dishonored"><em>Dishonored</em></a>, for example, is <a href="http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-DISHONORED/dishonored">available for a low $14.99</a>, or you can get <a href="http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-ES5S/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim"><em>Skyrim</em> for $14.95</a>, <a href="http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-RAGE/rage"><em>Rage</em> for $9.95</a>, or <em>Fallout: New Vegas</em>' Ultimate Edition <a href="http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-FNVUE/fallout-new-vegas-ultimate-edition">for $9.95</a>. <em>Brink, Oblivion, Fallout 3</em>, and <em>Morrowind</em> are all listed at bargain prices as well.<br />
<br />
A few of the titles have dropped out of stock already, which means that GamersGate has run out of digital keys for them. But as long as the title is still available for purchase, you can buy it, and then GamersGate will deliver a key when more are available. The deals last through the weekend, so now's your chance to fill out that Bethesda back catalog you've been missing.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/10/gamersgate-offering-bethesdas-best-for-cheap-this-weekend/">GamersGate offering Bethesda's best for cheap this weekend</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 10 May 2013 03:00:00 EST. Since its announcement in 2007, developer id Software has completely rebooted <em>Doom 4</em>'s development at least once and still doesn't have much to show as far as an actual game goes, <a href="http://kotaku.com/five-years-and-nothing-to-show-how-doom-4-got-off-trac-468097062">Kotaku</a> reports. The website provides the following breakdown from a series of anonymous people:<br /><br /><em>Doom 4</em> began as a Call of Duty-inspired shooter, with cinematic, scripted sequences, but after the lukewarm launch of <em>Rage</em> in 2011, id took another look at the project and started from scratch. Within that process, <em>Rage 2</em> was canceled and id tried to merge the Rage and Doom teams, to focus solely on <em>Doom 4</em>.<br /><br />By January 2012, id wanted <em>Doom 4 </em>to<em> be </em>as big as <em>Skyrim</em>, but the disparate teams had trouble finding a groove. Additionally, much of the project's "top talent" left id throughout 2012. This year, Zenimax, id's parent company, issued an ultimatum that could see id cleaned out to refocus on tech, two people tell Kotaku.<br /><br />For now <em>Doom 4 </em>is still alive, though it may not be immortal. In October 2011 and February 2012, <em>Doom 4</em> had two cancelation scares, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/21/bethesda-shoots-down-doom-4-postponement-rumors/">each</a> of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/28/bethesda-doom-4-isn-t-cancelled/">which</a> Bethesda refuted. The image above was part of a series that leaked in early 2012, though id <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/02/id-responds-to-alleged-doom-4-image-leak/">Design Director Matt Hooper</a> said it didn't represent actual <em>Doom 4</em> direction. Last we heard - back in August 2012 - <em>Doom 4 </em>was attached to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/05/doom-4-to-be-compatible-with-oculus-rift-vr-headset/">Oculus Rift's VR push</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/03/report-doom-4-development-still-rocky-rage-2-canned/">Report: Doom 4 development still rocky, Rage 2 canned</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 03 Apr 2013 17:00:00 EST. The mod tools were originally planned to launch alongside the game, but work on that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/24/carmack-rage-mod-tools-hit-real-soon-despite-a-year-of-poor/">fell to the wayside</a> in favor of <em>Doom 3 BFG</em>.<br /><br />There'll still be some waiting involved after today's release, as the file is a "hefty 35+ GB." It'll be in the Tools section of Steam when it arrives. Prepare yourself before or during that long, long download by reading the <a href="http://cdnstatic.bethsoft.com/bethblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Rage%20Tool%20Kit%20FAQ.pdf">FAQ</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/08/rage-tool-kit-on-steam-today/">Rage Tool Kit on Steam today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 08 Feb 2013 14:00:00 EST. Another trophy is for finishing the campaign on 'Ultra Nightmare difficulty,' suggesting the DLC includes a new difficulty level even tougher than plain ol' Nightmare setting.<br /><br />The trophies are backed up by a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/19/rage-the-scorchers-pops-up-on-pegi-smells-like-dlc-to-us/">PEGI listing </a>from earlier this year for 'Rage: The Scorchers,' content rated for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. id Software founder John Carmack has also said mod tools which were supposed to ship with <em>Rage</em> were coming to the game "soon." It's just speculation, but if the DLC is accurate it may coincide with their release.<br /><br />We've reached out to Bethesda for confirmation of the DLC.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/30/rage-is-getting-the-scorchers-dlc-soon-new-trophies-suggest/">Rage is getting 'The Scorchers' DLC soon, new trophies suggest</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 30 Nov 2012 09:30:00 EST. It didn't, but <a href="https://twitter.com/ID_AA_Carmack/status/260529465636040704">a tweet</a> from id Software founder John Carmack suggests he hasn't forgotten the promise he made to mod fans one year ago, nor the frustration of letting them down:<br /><br />"<em>BFG </em>work pushed the <em>Rage </em>tools, but Real Soon Now. I hope. Sigh. I think we have made poor decisions on this all year."<br /><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/doom-3-bfg-edition"><em>Doom 3 BFG Edition</em></a> launched on October 16 in the US, and now id is most likely focused on the development of<em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/doom-4">Doom 4</a></em>. If id is still serious about pushing<em> Doom 4</em> onto the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/oculus-rift/">Oculus Rift</a>, those mod tools better come out mighty soon, lest we never see them at all - when prioritizing development for either a crazy futuristic headset or modding tools for a year-old lukewarm game, the choice seems to jump right out at you.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/24/carmack-rage-mod-tools-hit-real-soon-despite-a-year-of-poor/">Carmack: Rage mod tools hit 'real soon' despite a year of 'poor decisions'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 24 Oct 2012 19:00:00 EST. Day five of the platform's annual <em>deal-stravaganza</em> features sales on <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/age-of-empires-iii">Age of Empires III</a> </em>for <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/105450/?snr=1_4_4__sdd">$9.99</a>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/metro-2033">Metro 2033</a></em> for <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/43110/?snr=1_4_4__sdd">$4.99</a>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage">RAGE</a></em> for <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/9200/?snr=1_4_4__sdd">$9.99</a>, and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/assassins-creed-revelations">Assassin's Creed: Revelations</a> </em>for <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/sub/14728/?snr=1_4_4__sdd">$13.59</a>. Those four games add up to the cost of four large, one-topping pizzas alone.<br /><br />Today's sale includes both <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dear-esther"><em>Dear Esther</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/star-wars-knights-of-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic</em></a> for a reasonable price of <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/32370/?snr=1_4_4__sdd">$2.49</a> each, around the cost of one of those personal pan pizzas. It appears that The Scorchers are back, as a listing on Europe's PEGI game rating website outs something named "Rage: The Scorchers" for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2012/06/18/rage-the-scorchers-sounds-like-dlc-for-rage/">Siliconera</a> spotted the listing and dated it to less than a week ago. For its part, Bethesda hasn't offered a comment, though we've reached out for more info. Thus far, <em>Rage</em> has zero DLC beyond a day-one "Anarchy Edition" bonus. Ahead of the game's launch last year, id Software's Tim Willits told <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2011-09-28-all-the-rage-interview?page=1">GamesIndustry.biz</a>, "Our immediate plans, of course, are some DLC for <em>Rage</em>," so it stands to reason that DLC of <em>some</em> form for the game is still planned.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/19/rage-the-scorchers-pops-up-on-pegi-smells-like-dlc-to-us/">'Rage: The Scorchers' pops up on PEGI, smells like DLC to us</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 19 Jun 2012 13:15:00 EST. id Software's parent company, Bethesda Softworks, confirmed with Joystiq this afternoon that an unknown quantity of employees at the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a> development studio have been let go. "As part of its standard business practice, id regularly evaluates staffing to ensure it has a workforce that meets the needs of the studio. As part of that process, some id employees were recently let go," the statement reads.<br />
<br />
Despite the layoffs, the publisher additionally noted that it is "still recruiting and hiring qualified developers" for id Software, and that "development work on future id titles continues unabated." id Software is currently working on <em>Doom 4</em>, the next entry in a long-running franchise for the studio, as it has been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/07/doom-4-announced-id-software-hiring/">for the past four-ish years</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/10/bethesda-confirms-layoffs-at-id-software-work-on-future-id-tit/">Bethesda confirms layoffs at id Software: 'Work on future id titles continues unabated'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Jan 2012 15:04:00 EST. Just in case you didn't get a chance to wander around the Earth, post asteroid-smash, in id's <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a> earlier this year, you can give the game a taster without investing any of your hard-earned cash (well, beyond an XBL Gold membership). The game's demo is <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/RAGE-Demo/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d802425387ef">now available on Xbox Live</a>, and is expected out on PSN on December 6.<br />

If you like what you see, don't forget that the title can be <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/14/kmart-black-friday-deals-30-rage-35-bf3-and-mgs-hd-collectio/">found in most Black Friday sales</a> this weekend -- most retailers have it offered up for about $30 or so. And if you <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/rage-review/#review">agree a little more with our review</a> (that there are probably better games of this ilk out there right now), well hey, at least there are better games of this ilk out there right now, right?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/23/rage-demo-available-now-on-xbox-live-coming-to-psn-december-6/">Rage demo available now on Xbox Live, coming to PSN December 6</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Nov 2011 08:30:00 EST. In a refreshing act of commenting on rumors and speculation, Bethesda has shot down the assertion that id Software's work on <em>Doom 4</em> had been "indefinitely postponed." Kotaku relayed the story from a source "claiming" to be close to the publisher, and suggesting that <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/doom-4"><em>Doom 4</em></a> development had been jettisoned in response to <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/rage">Rage</a>'s </em>rough landing.<br />
<br />
Pete Hines, VP of PR and Marketing at Bethesda Softworks, <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/DCDeacon/status/127376777755635712">tweeted</a>: "Re: DOOM 4 rumor, games are done when they are done and no title under development at id has been postponed --indefinitely or otherwise." In response to another journalist, Hines <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/DCDeacon/status/127362822731599872">described</a> the rumor as "complete bollocks." Hey, PR folks? More of this, please.<br />
<br />
Though it may not be officially postponed -- strangled in its bed because a sibling brought home a mixed report card -- <em>Doom 4</em> (working title) isn't likely to arrive any time soon. This is id Software, and the game was <em>only</em> announced in 2008, roughly a year after we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/11/id-software-debuts-new-engine-at-apple-conference/">first heard about <em>Rage</em></a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/21/bethesda-shoots-down-doom-4-postponement-rumors/">Bethesda shoots down Doom 4 postponement rumors</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 21 Oct 2011 10:20:00 EST. It'sa <em>Forza</em>, woo-hoo! Yes, the land of <em>Top Gear</em> saw <em>Forza Motorsport 4</em> race to the top of the charts in its debut week. According to <a href="http://www.chart-track.co.uk/?i=1197&amp;s=1111">Chart-Track</a>, the racing game claimed the "biggest launch week ever" for an "Xbox 360 racing game" ... considering most high-profile racers are multi-platform (with the exception of <em>Gran Turismo</em>) we take this to mean the latest sequel maneuvered past <em>Forza 3'</em>s premiere<em>.</em><br />
<br />
With <a href="http://www.chart-track.co.uk/index.jsp?c=p/software/uk/latest/index_test.jsp&amp;ct=110015">seven new entries in the UK Top 20</a> this week, there are plenty of places to look, but let's start with <em>Just Dance 3</em> premiering in third. Ubisoft's dance series has consistently entered the top 10 and hung out there for months while others come and go. With <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/14/dance-central-2-review/#review"><em>Dance Central 2</em> ready to step it up</a> this year, it'll be interesting to see if <em>Just Dance 3</em> has the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/11/just-dance-2-just-broke-5-million-copies-sold-in-the-us/">staying power</a> of its predecessors.<br />
<br />
The other two newbies in the top ten are sports titles <em>Pro Evolution Soccer 2012</em> and <em>Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge</em> at fifth and tenth place, respectively. Rush past the break for the full UK top ten.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/17/forza-4-finishes-first-on-uk-charts-just-dance-3-takes-third/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Forza 4 finishes first on UK charts, Just Dance 3 takes third</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/17/forza-4-finishes-first-on-uk-charts-just-dance-3-takes-third/">Forza 4 finishes first on UK charts, Just Dance 3 takes third</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Oct 2011 09:31:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fifa-soccer-12/"><em>FIFA 12</em></a>, despite a 68 percent drop in sales, remained the forward on the UK charts for a second week. EA announced last week that it estimates the title sold over <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/05/fifa-12-scores-3-2-million-sales-within-first-week/">3.2 million</a> units globally during its launch week.<br />
<br />
Debuting in second was the high-profile <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a> from id Software, but the real surprise this week is <em>Dark Souls</em> premiering in third, with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/03/dark-souls-review-brick-walls-and-pancakes/">masochists rejoicing</a> everywhere in their pool of tears and bruised egos.<br />
<br />
Last week also saw 2K Sports' <em>NBA 2K12</em> debut strongly at number 12, seven seats higher than last year. This will be EA Sports' second year letting 2K Sports <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/09/2k-sports-on-nba-elite-we-dont-care-if-ea-sports-has-a-baske/">gorge itself on NBA cake without competition</a>. For us, <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/rage">Rage</a></em> was <em>"</em>a scaffolding for a game of bolder ideas, ideas which, for whatever reason, aren't realized." The general feeling from other reviews is that it's a well-made effort from veteran studio id Software, though gameplay isn't anything better than what's out there now. The game is floating a metacritic score in the low 80s, with review scores <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/rage/critic-reviews">scattered like buckshot</a>.
<ul>
	<li>
		<a href="http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/119/1197972p1.html">IGN</a> (<strong>85/100</strong>): "<em>Rage</em> starts to drag toward the second half after most of the mechanics and upgrades are introduced because the fictional world isn't very interesting. Despite the lack of genuinely exciting context, all the content packed into <em>Rage</em> is still a blast to play, including the surprisingly entertaining car combat mode and co-operative challenges. "</li>
	<li>
		<a href="http://www.giantbomb.com/rage/61-20672/reviews/">Giant Bomb</a> (<strong>80/100</strong>): "Even if <em>Rage</em> were the worst game to come out in a long while, it would still arguably be the best-looking one. The sheer complexity of texture and detail packed into every one of the game's environments is nothing short of staggering, especially in the two town hubs that you'll return to again and again between missions."</li>
	<li>
		<a href="http://www.1up.com/reviews/review-rage-melting-pot-post-apocalyptica">1UP</a> (<strong>B</strong>): "<span class="articleText"><em>Rage</em> fits that mold snugly, but it's nothing revolutionary. It comes from a different kind of Id, one that would rather play with existing conventions than reinvent them. Conversely, it's the same Id that puts look and feel on the same high pillar, and it's impossible to call <em>Rage</em> badly-composed. I just don't think it's going to be remembered as anything but a sleeper hit of the fall of 2011. </span>"</li>
	<li>
		<a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-09-14-gears-of-war-3-review">Edge</a> (<span style="font-weight: bold;">7</span><strong>0/100</strong>): "In its later stages, <em>Rage</em> becomes a slog. Enemies get tougher, and the repeated pattern of rooms filling with monsters - which must be killed before, say, a door falls off its hinges - begins to drag. Objectives, meanwhile, rarely move beyond simple fetch quests. There's a fine line between sticking to what you're best at and being stuck in your ways, and id occasionally crosses it."</li>

<br />
Those of you who play vidya games primarily on consoles may have insulated yourself from an increasingly common scourge facing your PC gaming brethren: problematic PC ports. While we're sorry to say that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a> is suffering from some launch-day issues, the PC gaming godfathers at id Software aren't abandoning the platform. So put down those pitchforks. And torches.<br />
<br />
The above video is a good example of the issue: textures pop-in every time the camera moves. It would appear the high-res MegaTextures that id's John Carmack has been talking about for years are being dropped from memory immediately and not streaming in quickly enough. The Xbox 360 release, underpowered relative to the gaming PC in this video, exhibits very little if any texture pop-in which sort of puts the blame purely on your friend and ours: graphics card drivers!<br />
<br />
Bethesda Blog says that, in addition to the texture issues, there are also screen tearing problems but insists that both problems "can be attributed to driver issues" which id Software is "currently working with Nvidia and AMD to resolve [...] as quickly as possible."<br />
<br />
For AMD graphics card users, "you should not use" the beta driver that Bethesda shared yesterday. The <em>Battlefield 3</em> beta drivers will crash to desktop "100% with those drivers," and Beth Blog recommends updating "to the most recent driver when AMD updates, which we're told will be in a few hours." Nvidia users "should try updating Rage to the current beta driver" and Beth Blog will let everyone know when that's available. Be patient, PC gamer. It's been seven years since the last internally developed id Software game; another day or so isn't going to kill you.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/psa-rage-is-having-issues-on-pc-fixes-incoming/">PSA: Rage is having issues on PC, fixes incoming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 17:40:00 EST. Frankly, we're not sure what's better, the fact that there's a <em>Wolfenstein 3D</em> room in <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a>, or imagining the reactions from gamers too young to know what <em>Wolfenstein 3D</em> is.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/rages-wolfenstein-room-is-filled-with-pixelated-treasure/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rage's Wolfenstein room is filled with pixelated treasure</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/rages-wolfenstein-room-is-filled-with-pixelated-treasure/">Rage's Wolfenstein room is filled with pixelated treasure</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 16:10:00 EST. <em>RAGE</em> isn't what you think it is.<br />
<br />
In fact, it's easiest to tell you what <em>RAGE</em> isn't right away. It's nothing like Fallout 3. It's nothing like Borderlands. It's not an RPG, though Id and Bethesda have used <a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/96607-Rage-to-Have-Economy-Crafting" target="_blank">RPG terminology</a> in describing it. It's not much of an open world. It's not very big. It's not very long.<br />
<br />
And unfortunately, it's not the return to prominence that Id fans have been hoping for.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/">Rage (8/2/11 preview)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/#4338926"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/shot00060_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/#4338927"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/shot00684_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/#4338928"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/shot00730_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/#4338929"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/shot00764_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rage-8-2-11-preview/#4338930"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/shot00777_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/rage-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>RAGE review: Anger management</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/04/rage-review/">RAGE review: Anger management</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 Oct 2011 00:00:00 EST. Have you been feeling acutely cheery recently? Is your constantly joyful attitude destroying your daily life? Do people on the streets gasp in disgust and pull their children away from your positively <a href="http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/strutting-leo-leo-strut">delighted strut</a>? Then it's about time you got your <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage">Rage</a> </em>on -- beginning today, people who pre-ordered <em>Rage </em>on Steam can begin pre-loading it in preparation for its Tuesday launch. Or you could save it all for Tuesday and really feel the hatred as you wait for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/07/make-some-room-for-the-rage-pc-specs/">25GB load</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/02/psa-rage-is-ready-for-pre-load-on-steam-right-now/">PSA: Rage is ready for pre-load on Steam right now</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 02 Oct 2011 19:30:00 EST. You didn't think <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a> was only about the relationship between a fallen-to-Earth Ark dweller and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/12/rage-dev-diary-introduces-the-superhero-john-goodman/">wasteland superhero John Goodman</a>, did you? As this latest walkthrough can attest, it's also about carefully angling rockets to murder faraway goons. Oh, and wearing <em>totally sweet</em> deer antlers as a warrior helmet, naturally.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/29/rage-walkthrough-explores-the-murderous-mysteries-of-jackal-cany/">Rage walkthrough explores the murderous mysteries of Jackal Canyon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 29 Sep 2011 19:00:00 EST. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage">Rage</a> </em>will span three discs on Xbox 360 and require an 8GB install on PS3, id Software creative director Tim Willits has confirmed. It was rumored that Rage would have a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/07/make-some-room-for-the-rage-pc-specs/">large install</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/19/id-xbox-360-rage-may-have-separate-discs-for-campaign-and-multi/">multiple discs on 360</a>, but it seemed as if id was leaning toward a slim-and-trim two-disc set, stating that a separate multiplayer disc-swap would be "fail." id didn't have to pick a disc number for the PS3 version of Rage, effectively utilizing the Blu-ray drive to hold all of the game's gigs, something that Willits seemed very pleased about:<br />
<br />
"Sony was great," Willits said. "Kudos to Sony for letting us do that. They don't allow every game to do that. So definitely, hats off. What we were able to do is install all the textures to the highest level. What is nice about the PS3 platform is that it's just one platform. Everyone has one Blu-ray drive, one hard drive, it's all the same. Some of the other systems you have... should I install it on my 360? Should I not install it? So yes, it's very nice."<br />
<br />
For 360 versions, Willits said id recommends installing the game to the hard drive, or if you don't have the space for <em>all 22GB</em>, after installing and finishing the first half of the game from disc one, uninstall it, and then install disc two. There isn't a reason to disc-swap after completing the first half, and "you don't really need to install the multiplayer disc if you're really tight on hard disk space," Willits said.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/25/rage-requires-3-discs-on-xbox-360-8gb-install-on-ps3-tolerance/">Rage requires 3 discs on Xbox 360, 8GB install on PS3, tolerance from fans</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 25 Sep 2011 19:30:00 EST. After peeping the minimum PC specs required for id Software's mutant shoot-a-thon, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a>, we realize that our plan to duct-tape six Eee PCs together <em>might</em> not work out. AMC's <em>Breaking Bad</em> featured a bizarrely long, obvious advertising plug for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage">Rage</a> </em>on this week's episode, as seen above, and included a light-gun motion-controller that Bethesda assures us is <a href="http://www.bethblog.com/index.php/2011/09/02/rage-featured-on-this-weeks-episode-of-breaking-bad/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+bethesdablog+%28Bethesda+Blog%29">entirely fictional</a>. We knew using crystal meth could lead to extreme, sudden bursts of rage -- we just didn't think it would ever be so <em>literal</em>. The clip shows Jesse Pinkman, drug-peddler extraordinaire, playing a level of <em>Rage</em> while hallucinating about shooting chemist Gale Boetticher point-blank in the face.<br />
<br />
While we don't know what Bethesda's strategy is with this plug, we're pretty sure it's not a great argument against the (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ab-1179/">bogus</a>) theory that video games promote violence. Maybe it marks the beginning of <em>Rage</em>'s new reverse-psychology tagline: <em>Rage -- Not Even Once</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/02/rage-has-a-cameo-in-breaking-bad-because-nothing-sells-games-be/">Rage has a cameo in Breaking Bad, because nothing sells games better than meth</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 02 Sep 2011 23:00:00 EST. Will the man with the flamethrower ever learn? As seen in the latest trailer for id Software's upcoming shooter, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a>, he clearly still hasn't. What's that, flamethrower man? You didn't realize your gas tank was explosive? Incorrigible, we say!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/27/the-plight-of-the-flamethrower-man-care-of-rage/">The plight of the flamethrower man, care of Rage</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 27 Aug 2011 01:30:00 EST. We tend to give Facebook a lot of guff for its many, many menial labor simulators, but today, the social network gets a pass. As a way of thanking the 100,000 users that "Liked" the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/rage">official <em>Rage</em> page</a> on the service, id has made the iOS versions of the game (both classic and HD) free for the next week.<br />
<br />
Our temporary Facebook armistice will, of course, be rescinded the <em>moment</em> someone invites us to join their mafia.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/18/rage-and-rage-hd-ios-free-for-a-week/">Rage and Rage HD (iOS) free for a week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 18 Aug 2011 15:20:00 EST. Bethesda is putting the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage">Rage</a> </em>back in<em> cloud storage</em>, announcing yesterday that id Software's FPS will use Steamworks on PC. Confirmation came via the Bethesda <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/Bethblog/status/102128388499709952">Twitter</a>, which simply stated, "Since folks are asking... we can confirm that <em>RAGE </em>will use Steamworks on PC." Steamworks will allow <em>Rage </em>developers to take advantage of the Steam client, including DRM, voice communication, multiplayer hosting and achievement features.<br />
<br />
This was all almost <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/15/rage-will-be-published-by-bethesda-ea-out-of-the-picture/">an impossible dream</a> -- in 2008 id Software and EA had a publishing agreement to release <em>Rage </em>through the EA Partners program, which, today, would mean a release on Origin and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/06/battlefield-3-wont-be-sold-on-steam-ea-claims-service-restric/">no love for Valve</a>. In 2009 id was purchased by ZeniMax Media, Bethesda's parent company, ending the EA agreement and landing us with Steamy love for <em>R</em><em>age</em>. Or <em>Rage</em>ful love for Steam. Either way, it's <em>hot</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/13/we-put-steam-in-your-rage-so-you-can-rage-while-you-steam-and-no/">We put Steam in your Rage so you can Rage while you Steam and not use Origin</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 13 Aug 2011 13:30:00 EST. Sewer levels are frequently some of the most maligned in any action game, but in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage">Rage</a> </em>they're a bonus. In an interview with <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-08-11-tim-willits-building-rage-and-never-selling-out-interview">Eurogamer</a>, id creative director Tim Willits said that sewer hatches scattered across the landscape would be open for those who bought the game new, a perk those buying used will have to pay for.<br />
<br />
It's bound to irritate some fans, but Willits tried to soften the blow by downplaying the significance of the sewers, saying, "Most people never even see it. I can tell you, some people will buy <em>Rage</em>, download that, and still never set foot in those things. They just won't. I think that's fair. It's cool. It's outside the main path. We're not detracting from anything. But I know some consumers, when you can't avoid it, then you get a little touchy subject."<br />
<br />
Used buyers, we know your inclination is to start fuming, but just look at those guys in the above image. "You can imagine, if there was an actor from Hollywood that could survive an asteroid destroying the earth, he would be on that list." That's how Id Creative Director Tim Willits explained the choice to cast John Goodman for the voice of "Dan Hagar" in <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a>. Goodman's immortality has, until now, been only rumor.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/12/rage-dev-diary-introduces-the-superhero-john-goodman/">Rage dev diary introduces the superhero John Goodman</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 12 Aug 2011 05:00:00 EST. <ul>
	<li>
		id Tech 1: Doom(1993), Doom 2 (1994)</li>
	<li>
		id Tech 2: Quake (1996), Quake 2 (1997)</li>
	<li>
		id Tech 3: Quake 3 Arena (1999)</li>
	<li>
		id Tech 4: Doom 3 (2004)</li>
	<li>
		id Tech 5: Rage (2011)</li>
</ul>
Notice a trend? With the exception of the earliest id shooters, which evolved very quickly, id has been in the business of developing one game per technology platform for the last eleven years. Sure, they licensed that technology to other developers to create other id titles like <em>Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory</em> to <em>Quake 4</em> but when strictly talking about the work being done internally at id, technology and game development have gone hand in hand. But id's Todd Hollenshead knows that has to change.<br />
<br />
"We need to get to shorter cycles," Hollenshead <a href="http://www.vg247.com/2011/08/09/ids-superego-todd-hollenshead-on-all-things-id-software/">told VG247</a>. "And I think part of that is that we can't be doing a revolutionary technology with every game we develop." To that end, the studio's upcoming <em>Doom 4</em> will use - you guessed it - id tech 5! "We have to go to a bit more of an iterative technology approach," he admitted, adding, "I think it's a completely doable thing, but I don't think it just happens without putting some effort into it."<br />
<br />
Luckily, with Bethesda's deep pockets backing the studio now, id is able to work on two games in parallel, without risking everything. "The capital required to put both those games in production - the means and size to do them at a triple-A level - would have been a literal "bet the company" sort of thing," Hollenshead explained. So, after <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rage"><em>Rage</em></a> ships does that mean id can finally get to work on that Commander Keen reboot we've been waiting for all these years?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/09/id-software-looking-to-shorten-dev-cycles-stop-building-new-eng/">id Software looking to shorten dev cycles, stop building new engines for every game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 09 Aug 2011 20:15:00 EST.
