Guillemot: There's a 'good chance' Rainbow 6: Patriots is next-gen

Rainbow 6: Patriots encountered a rough production patch earlier this year when it swapped out creative director David Sears for Jean-Sebastien Decant. That doesn't mean the game is any less ambitious, and Patriots might even even up on next-gen platforms, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot tells Polygon.

Answering a direct question about Patriots being a next-gen game, Guillemot says, "There's a good chance it can be." Patriots is still scheduled for a launch in 2013, remember.

Ubisoft is working with Sears' original vision, which involves taking down a homegrown terrorist cell called the True Patriots, and making ambiguously moral decisions about the lives (and violent deaths) of civilians along the way. "But that's what is interesting with the concept - being able to give a choice to the person who is playing," Guillemot says.

Rainbow 6: Patriots retains gritty story after team change

When Ubisoft confirmed that the creative director of Rainbow 6: Patriots, David Sears, had been replaced by Jean-Sebastien Decant, natural assumption was that it was over the title's morally ambiguous storyline. That's not quite the case, Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat told Game Informer.

Sears' departure was a mutual decision, Mallat said, and Ubisoft is "evolving the vision that came from David's initial input." Sears, narrative director Richard Rouse III, lead designer Philippe Therien and animation director Brent George have left Team Rainbow, Mallat confirmed. Sears at least is still employed by Ubisoft Montreal. Mallat said he's been moved on to a "major project for a major brand."

Rainbow 6: Patriots is still set to launch in 2013, Mallat said.

Rainbow 6: Patriots development team restructured [update: Ubisoft partially confirms]

When it was officially revealed last year, pretty much everyone was taken aback by Rainbow 6: Patriots. Early footage and our own experience with the game delved deep into a moral gray area, putting the very real issue of civilian death directly into players' hands -- even to the point of asking players to eliminate civilians for the sake of the greater good.

The new direction was undecidedly dark, possibly too dark for Ubisoft, according to a report from Game Informer. A GI source states that Ubisoft has all but gutted the development team at Ubisoft Montreal, pulling creative director David Sears, narrative director Richard Rouse III, lead designer Philippe Therien and animation director Brent George off of Rainbow 6: Patriots. It's not clear exactly what this means for the project going forward, but it would definitely seem to indicate a radical change in direction for the potentially controversial title.

We've contacted Ubisoft for comment.

Update: Ubisoft has responded to the matter, stating that David Sears has indeed been replaced as creative director. The new creative director is Jean-Sebastien Decant. According to his Linkedin profile, Decant recently served as creative director for Driver: San Francisco and also as narrative director for Far Cry 3.

Ubisoft made no mention of the other rumored staff changes, stating only that "the development team is still hard at work to deliver the next installment of the revered Tom Clancy series and more details on the game will be revealed at a later date."

Rainbow 6: Patriots revealed by next month's Game Informer cover

Both the reports of an early concept video leaked this past June and the web domain acquisitions which pointed at Ubisoft's next installment in the Rainbow Six franchise have proven authentic: Game Informer just announced its December issue will focus on Rainbow 6: Patriots. The title, which is tentatively scheduled to launch on 360, PS3 and PC in 2013, prominently features the compelling (and presumably controversial) moral dilemmas seen in the video from earlier this year.

Creative director David Sears told Game Informer that in addition to that new "narrative direction," the game will feature "all the team play, tactics, and realism that fans of the series love." You can watch an expanded version of that video from June on Game Informer -- just be forewarned, it's kind of upsetting. Terrorists are mean, you guys.

The next Rainbow Six game is probably titled 'Patriots'

Fusible spotted Ubisoft's domain-name registration for rainbowsixpatriots.com and rainbow6patriots.com, and the title has been corroborated by NeoGAF user -BLITZ-, with additional information expected to hit Xbox World Magazine next month. Previous reports said Rainbow Six: Patriots will be a lesson in the morality behind terrorism and those attempting to thwart it, which fits the title quite well. It would be awkward if it were called Rainbow Six: That Was Probably Just A Car Backfiring; Go Back To Bed.

Report: Ubisoft's next Rainbow Six to focus on moral dilemmas

Kotaku reports that it recently checked out an early video demonstration for an upcoming entry in Ubisoft's long-dormant tactical shooter franchise, Rainbow Six -- from which the image above was supposedly culled. According to the report, the game tasks the elite unit with stopping the threat of a homegrown terrorist cell from visiting destruction upon New York City; a goal which will present the player with a multitude of frequent moral dilemmas.

One sequence of the demo apparently puts players in the shoes of a kidnapping victim who must hold down a trigger to keep an explosive vest from detonating. Later in the demo, the player shoots his way to the victim (either killing or incapacitating his enemies), and then must decide between risking the lives of everyone else on the bridge, or tossing the poor sod into the river below. It sounds interesting -- but according to Kotaku, Ubisoft is still on the fence about whether these moral decisions will make it into the final cut of the game.

We've contacted Ubisoft about the report, and will keep our eyes peeled for the reported video. We're also going to go play a few rounds of Terrorist Hunt, because man, we've got the itch.
