Starting today and running until Thursday, April 28 at 11:30am EST, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/resident-evil-5"><em>Resident Evil 5</em></a> is half-off on the Games For Windows marketplace -- down to $15 from its usual $30 asking price. Sounds like a perfect opportunity to give a lonely <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Resident_Evil_characters">Majini</a> a home. Sure, they may be parasitic shells of their former selves, but that doesn't mean they don't have <em>feelings</em>, guys.<br />
<br />
It should be noted that this is the base edition of <em>Resident Evil 5</em>, sans both DLC packs: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/19/resident-evil-5-lost-in-nightmares-dlc-easter-egg/">Lost in Nightmares</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/19/resident-evil-5-lost-in-nightmares-dlc-easter-egg/">Desperate Escape</a>. It also doesn't include <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/12/resident-evil-5-versus-dlc-confirmed-costs-money/">the Versus mode</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/22/resident-evil-5-is-half-price-on-games-for-windows/">Resident Evil 5 is half price on Games For Windows</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 22 Apr 2011 02:00:00 EST. <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/capcom">Capcom</a> has released its annual report for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2010, and there's a wealth of information for those willing to plumb its 102-page depths. Net sales for Capcom's fiscal 2009 were &yen;66.8 billion ($779 million), down from &yen;91.8 billion ($1.07 billion) in 2008. The company saw net income of &yen;2.16 billion ($25 million), its lowest since 2004 (when it saw a loss of over &yen;9 billion). This marks a very sharp contrast to the previous year, when Capcom recorded net income of &yen;8 billion ($93 million), its highest earnings since 2000.<br />
<br />
Capcom cited the postponement of many major titles until the following fiscal year as the cause for the decline. Given those titles included the likes of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/22/capcom-pulls-super-street-fighter-iv-lost-planet-2-monster-hun/"><em>Super Street Fighter 4</em></a>, we'd say that's <em>probably</em> accurate. <br />
<br />
Capcom isn't losing heart though, and goes on to detail its new strategy of "Single Content Multiple Usage." The company plans to leverage its video game segment (which accounts for 65.9 percent of its business) to promote products in other forms of media. As illustrated in the image above, Capcom has already done this with the <em>Resident Evil </em>franchise, creating books, movies and music that revolve around the brand. Capcom hopes this will reduce risk and attract "customers obtained from other business segments" to the video games these products are based on.<br />
<br />
So, does watching Milla Jovovich kill movie zombies compel you to shoot the virtual ones?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/18/capcom-profits-plummet-in-fiscal-2009-new-strategy-outlined/">Capcom profits plummet in fiscal 2009, new strategy outlined</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 18 Sep 2010 00:00:00 EST. Capcom and Sony Pictures are subjecting victims to another CG <em>Resident Evil</em> movie: <em>Damnation</em>. The animated feature will be released in Japan in 2012 using that 3D tech the corporations are raving about. <br />
<br />
According to <a href="http://www.capcom.co.jp/ir/english/news/html/e100914.html">Capcom</a>, the first <em>Resident Evil</em> CG film, <em>Degeneration</em>, has shipped over 1.6 million copies for home viewing and its limited "2-week / 3-screen theatrical release in Japan" grossed &yen;40 million yen ($480K).<br />
<br />
Despite <em>Resident Evil's</em> celluloid excursions being <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/search/movie/resident+evil/results">reviled by critics</a>, the series has made plenty of bank.<em> Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D</em> is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/13/resident-evil-afterlife-nets-first-place-at-the-box-office/">currently the top movie at the box office</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/14/resident-evil-damnation-3d-cg-movie-sequel-announced/">Resident Evil: Damnation 3D CG movie sequel announced</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Sep 2010 09:31:00 EST. Seemingly at peace with the fact that it may never escape the <em>"<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/resident-evil-5">Resident Evil 5</a> </em>is racist" flap the game <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/24/resident-evil-5-producer-there-is-no-racial-element-to-it-at-a/ ">stirred up last year</a>, Capcom USA is speaking openly about measures it is taking to ensure it can offer a non-Japanese perspective on future titles. Talking with <a href="http://gamasutra.com/view/news/30059/Capcom_Were_Never_Going_To_Have_Another_RE5_Controversy.php">Gamasutra</a>, the senior PR rep for the publisher's North American operation, Melody Pfeiffer, confirmed that, "Since the RE5 controversy, we have become much more aware of how important it is that we are part of the asset creation process early on so that we are able to have a say in the end product." (Implying that it <em>didn't</em> before.)<br />
<br />
"We are also designing a lot of our own assets from this side of the pond, so that we are able to make strategic pieces of content that make sense for our market," Pfeiffer added, saying, "We are working really closely with our producers in Japan to construct these materials for the West and they are open more then ever to hearing our thoughts and ideas for assets."<br />
<br />
Translated: Capcom USA hopes it won't be blindsided again, and has gotten assurances from the home office that it'll be listened to the next time it says, "Uh, no, that <em>ain't </em>gonna fly <em>anywhere</em>." Listened to, yes, but <em>heard</em>? Only the lack of another "<em>RE5 </em>controversy" can serve as proof.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/24/capcom-usa-will-be-proactive-in-preventing-another-re5-controve/">Capcom USA will be proactive in preventing another 'RE5 controversy'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Aug 2010 19:30:00 EST. Capcom clarified today at Gamescom that the <em>Resident Evil 5</em> patch that introduces Move functionality will be available on September 19 (the same day <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/15/playstation-move-coming-september-19-for-50/">Move launches</a>). As <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/26/resident-evil-5-gold-edition-to-get-move-patch-original-re5-ca/">previously mentioned</a>, the automatically downloaded patch will only be available for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5-gold-edition">Gold Edition</a> of the game. If you live in Italy or Spain you didn't get a "gold edition," but Capcom is releasing <em>Resident Evil 5: Move Edition</em> in those countries.<br />
<br />
A Capcom representative also let us know that folks playing together will be able to play co-op online or offline with any supported controller configurations (a Move and Navigation Controller pair can play alongside a DualShock 3, for instance). The Move controls (and all the other control options) will be available in the main story, Mercenaries and bonus episodes.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/18/resident-evil-5s-move-patch-available-september-19/">Resident Evil 5's Move patch available September 19</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 Aug 2010 11:00:00 EST. If you're anything like us, you've been waiting diligently for the motion controller-enabled version of 2009's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/resident-evil-5">Resident Evil 5</a></em>, hoping for a chance to battle zombies (and explore the additional content) using Sony's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/playstation-move">PlayStation Move</a>. A recent posting on the <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/07/26/playstation-move-hands-on-resident-evil-5-gold-edition/">PlayStation Blog</a> by Sony's Sid Shuman indicates that only folks who own the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5-gold-edition">Gold Edition</a> of <em>RE5</em> will be receiving the Move-enabling patch "close to the launch of the PlayStation Move."<br />
<br />
"This will only work with <em>RE5</em> copies labeled 'Gold Edition' -- the original version of <em>RE5</em> won't be receiving the patch, for technical reasons," Shuman says, additionally noting that the patch itself will become available on PSN "close to the launch of the PlayStation Move." <br />
<br />
Not into patches? Too bad! No, no, <em>just joshin</em>' -- apparently all retail versions of <em>RE5</em>'s Gold Edition will come with the patch on-disc after Move's official release. Also, you should probably get in on the whole "internet" <em>thing</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/26/resident-evil-5-gold-edition-to-get-move-patch-original-re5-ca/">Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition to get Move patch; original RE5 can't</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 26 Jul 2010 17:00:00 EST. Given all the release announcements, new games and other such hullabaloo that's recently surrounded the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/playstation-move">PlayStation Move</a>, we wouldn't be surprised if you've forgotten about one of the earliest titles known to support the ice cream cone-shaped peripheral: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5-alternative-edition"><em>Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition</em></a>. Perhaps this will jog your memory: Sony Japan recently announced that the game will be bundled with the Move controller and PlayStation Eye, a package which will sell for 7,980 yen (about $90).<br />
<br />
Sadly, <em>zero</em> gamers will be purchasing this particular bundle, as Sony Japan also announced the "PlayStation Move BIG 3 GUN SHOOTING Perfect Pack," a commanding package which includes <em>Time Crisis: Razing Storm</em>, <em>Dead Storm Pirates</em> and <em>Time Crisis 4: Arcade Version</em>. Of course, this bundle costs 11,980 yen (about $136) and features three games that, even when combined, aren't as good as <em>RE5</em> -- but still! It's the BIG 3 GUN SHOOTING Perfect Pack. How are we supposed to say no to that?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/06/playstation-move-bundled-with-resident-evil-5-in-japan/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PlayStation Move bundled with Resident Evil 5 in Japan</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/06/playstation-move-bundled-with-resident-evil-5-in-japan/">PlayStation Move bundled with Resident Evil 5 in Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 06 Jul 2010 09:48:00 EST. </a></div>
There's a neat throwback to the first time Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield went stomping around a creepy old mansion in "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/lost-in-nightmares">Lost in Nightmares</a>," the new DLC episode for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5"><em>Resident Evil 5</em></a>. By going to the front door of the mansion and attempting to open it a few times (remember what happened <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DW3txAxaD2A">the first time you tried that</a>?), you'll eventually get a "?" message and the camera will shift to <em>Resident Evil's</em> classic, isolated point of view.<br />
<br />
More than anything, the Easter egg is a nostalgic reminder of the olden days of survival horror, before Chris Redfield had to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/11/pinpoint-exactly-when-resident-evils-chris-redfield-started-tak/">juice up</a> just to get out of bed in the morning.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/19/resident-evil-5-lost-in-nightmares-dlc-easter-egg/">RE5 'Lost in Nightmares' Easter egg: the classic cam</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 19 Feb 2010 14:30:00 EST. With a rapidly approaching "Spring" release date and only one game with confirmed support for the device, Sony has made the presumably wise decision to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/20/playstation-motion-controllers-release-date-moves-to-fall-2010/">delay the release</a> of the as-yet-unnamed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/PlayStation-Motion-Controller/">PlayStation Motion Controller</a> until "Fall 2010" in order to "offer an exciting and varied line-up of software titles that will deliver the new entertainment experience to PS3 users." The single game with confirmed support: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Resident-Evil-5-Alternative-Edition/"><em>Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition</em></a>, shown off at last year's Tokyo Game Show with Motion Controller support on PS3 (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/25/tgs-2009-motion-controlled-resident-evil-5-caught-on-video/">here it is on video</a>). <em>RE5: Alternative Edition</em> is coming to North America as "Gold Edition" in both retail and DLC formats, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/19/resident-evil-5-gold-edition-hits-retail-in-march-dlc-in-febru/">beginning in February</a>.<br />
<br />
We asked Capcom US how the delay of the Motion Controller would affect the release of Alternative/Gold Edition and here's what the publisher told us: <br />
<blockquote>
<div>Capcom has not announced any compatibility between Sony's motion controller and <em>Resident Evil 5</em> in North America. The release of this product will be unaffected by the delay in our territory and is still on track for a March 9 release with the individual pieces of downloadable content released prior.</div>
</blockquote>Of course, that doesn't answer if the already demoed Motion Controller support will still be a component of the Japanese "Alternative Edition" release, whether that support will be patched into any or all of the retail and DLC releases upon the arrival of the Motion Controller in the Fall, or whether Capcom's just giving up on the idea entirely. We're following up and will let you know if Capcom's sharing anything beyond the above statement. <br />

When the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/19/resident-evil-5-gold-edition-hits-retail-in-march-dlc-in-febru/">new "Gold Edition" content</a> for Capcom's <em>oh-my-god-get-it-off-me</em>-em-up, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5"><em>Resident Evil 5</em></a>, was announced for consoles, PC players were feeling left outside the Spencer Mansion. <a href="http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/700866/Resident-Evil-5-Downloadable-Content-Not-Planned-For-PC-Version-At-This-Point.html">G4</a> got in touch with Capcom to find out why the PC version wasn't listed as a platform for the new episodes and costumes, to which Capcom responded it had "no plans for PC at this point."<br />
<br />
The snub strikes us as odd, considering Capcom's continued support for its biggest games -- including <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/15/yatta-your-lame-pc-will-run-street-fighter-iv-specs-revealed/"><em>Street Fighter IV</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/08/bionic-commando-swings-to-pc-july-17-in-eu-july-28-in-us/"><em>Bionic Commando</em></a> and even <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/16/resident-evil-5-shambles-onto-pc-sept-15/"><em>RE5</em></a> -- on the PC platform throughout this year and into 2010 with <em>Lost Planet 2, </em><em>Dark Void</em> and <em>Dead Rising 2</em>. What's the matter, Capcom -- did the extras train derail at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/21/these-new-resident-evil-5-costumes-are-not-a-win-win/">Weird Costume Gulch</a>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/23/capcom-no-plans-for-re5-dlc-on-pc/">Capcom: 'No plans' for RE5 DLC on PC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Nov 2009 14:00:00 EST. Chris Redfield and his personal gun show may complain that an entire mansion is being run on the archaic device in this teaser for upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5"><em>Resident Evil 5</em></a> DLC episode, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/19/resident-evil-5-gold-edition-hits-retail-in-march-dlc-in-febru/">Lost in Nightmares</a></em>, but that's because the dude doesn't respect the crank's noble history. Remember when Capcom <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/05/capcom-asks-how-you-want-re5-alternative-editions-extra-conten/">conducted a poll asking how</a> we wanted to receive the additional content being offered in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5-alternative-edition"><em>Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition</em></a> -- in a boxed version of the game or as a DLC expansion to the original? Turns out the questionnaire wasn't a pointless exercise. A majority of the participants answered that they'd rather receive the new features (including motion-control functionality) as a downloadable pack. After deliberating with the <em>RE5 </em>team in Osaka, <a href="http://www.capcom-unity.com/kramez/blog/2009/11/09/re5_alternative_edition_content_coming_to_n_america_and_europe">Capcom has announced that the new content</a> will come to the U.S., Europe and Australia as DLC for the core game.<br /> <br /> Considering <em>Alternative Edition</em> is going to Japan in a retail box, this move is fairly surprising. Perhaps even a little <em>upsetting</em>, if you've gone ahead and traded your copy of the game in towards the cost of <em>Horse Life Adventures</em>. Even <em>more </em>upsetting if you did that today. Like, <em>right</em> before writing this post. In a story about the scarier games (it's almost Halloween, don'tchaknow?), <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSTRE59T0F020091030?pageNumber=2&amp;virtualBrandChannel=11604">Reuters</a> mentioned two things we thought would be good for this website we got going here. First, there's Capcom's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5"><em>Resident Evil 5</em></a>, which Reuters reports has managed to sell 1.94 million copies in the US, according to NPD Group figures.<br />
<br />
The second part of the Reuters story talks about EA and its spookier titles for 2009: <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/left-4-dead-2">Left 4 Dead 2</a> </em>and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dead-space-extraction"><em>Dead Space: Extraction</em></a>. While there isn't anything new on the former, in a discussion of the latter, Reuters revealed that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dead-space-2"><em>Dead Space 2</em></a> is apparently planned for a 2010 release, which would seem to confirm <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/30/dead-space-2-entering-production-in-next-few-months/">what we've heard</a> about the game so far.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/30/reuters-re5-sold-1-94m-in-us-dead-space-2-in-development-for-2/">Reuters: RE5 sold 1.94M in US; Dead Space 2 in development for 2010</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 30 Oct 2009 13:45:00 EST. Over at <a href="http://www.capcom-unity.com/kramez/blog/2009/10/05/resident_evil_5_alternative_edition_how_do_you_want_the_new_content_tell_us">Capcom Unity</a>, they're polling individuals on what they would like to see in a localized version of the recently revealed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5-alternative-edition"><em>Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition</em></a>. In Japan, the title is coming on a new disc to the retail space, but Capcom is still entertaining different delivery solutions for North America and Europe, namely digital distribution as DLC for the original game. Since Capcom's had success with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5,versus">the <em>Versus</em> add-on</a> and recent digital wares such as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/super-street-fighter-ii-turbo-hd-remix"><em>SSF2THD</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/marvel-vs-capcom-2"><em>Marvel vs Capcom 2</em></a>, it's willing to go that route if the demand is high enough. So Capcom put up a poll and, if you want your voice heard, we suggest you <a href="http://www.capcom-unity.com/kramez/blog/2009/10/05/resident_evil_5_alternative_edition_how_do_you_want_the_new_content_tell_us">make with the clickings</a>.<br /><br />As for tangible, things-you-can-see-in-front-of-you-right-now news, we'd like to direct your attention to <a href="http://game.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/20091005_319708.html">GAME Watch</a>. The awkwardly named <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Resident-Evil-5-Alternative-Edition/"><em>Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition</em></a> is the forthcoming motion control-enabled update of <em>RE5,</em> complete with PS3 waggle and a new flashback mission starring Jill Valentine set in the Spencer Mansion. While the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/30/new-resident-evil-5-content-may-also-come-to-xbox-360/">new content <em>may </em>find its way to the Xbox 360</a> in a "different format," you can assume the motion controls will be a PS3-exclusive.<br /> <br /> However, since the above trailer doesn't say anything about motion controls and instead focuses on the setting (remember that fight?), Xbox 360 owners can just pretend it's for them as well.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/01/the-resident-evil-alternative-edition-trailer/">The Resident Evil: Alternative Edition trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 01 Oct 2009 12:21:00 EST. When Jun Takeuchi surprised Tokyo Game Show attendees with a motion-controlled version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5"><em>Resident Evil 5</em></a> (subtitled "Alternative Edition"), he also revealed some new included content, <a href="http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/102/1029349p1.html">reportedly</a> a flashback scene set in the Spencer Mansion <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/23/resident-evil-5-directors-cut-to-feature-jill/">featuring Jill Valentine</a>.<br /> <br /> According to an IGN translation of a Dengeki Online article, the new scene (and whatever else <em>Alternative Edition</em> includes) may not be constrained to Sony's platform. Dengeki says that the new content may come to 360, but in a "different format," possibly implying a DLC release on Xbox Live Marketplace.<br /> <br /> It's great news, but keep in mind: there will only be motion control-support on one platform.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/30/new-resident-evil-5-content-may-also-come-to-xbox-360/">New Resident Evil 5 content may also come to Xbox 360</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 30 Sep 2009 11:20:00 EST. Remember when it was first announced that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5"><em>Resident Evil 5</em></a> wasn't coming to the Wii, and fans got really upset, because <em>Resident Evil 4</em> on the Wii was <em>totally awesome</em>? It seems that decision wasn't made due to Capcom's oversight of said <em>awesomeness</em> -- rather, it looks like they chose to bring that experience to the PS3 with the ball-pointed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/playstation-motion-controller">PlayStation Motion Controller</a>.<br /> <br /> Seriously, check out <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgDV48JbYXw">this gameplay sample</a> (video posted after the break) from Sony's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tgs-2009">TGS</a> keynote and tell us that doesn't look <em>exactly</em> like <em>RE4</em> on the Wii. Okay, the PS3 version is significantly prettier -- and due to the fact that Sony's controller has no nunchuck (which forces the player to hold a SIXAXIS in one hand and the wand in another) the controls look<em> a bit</em> more awkward this time around.<br /> <br /> [Via <a href="http://www.vg247.com/2009/09/25/video-of-re5-working-with-ps3-motion-controller/">VG247</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/25/tgs-2009-motion-controlled-resident-evil-5-caught-on-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>TGS 2009: Motion-controlled Resident Evil 5 caught on video</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/25/tgs-2009-motion-controlled-resident-evil-5-caught-on-video/">TGS 2009: Motion-controlled Resident Evil 5 caught on video</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 25 Sep 2009 15:23:00 EST. During Sony's second press conference at the Tokyo Game Show, Capcom's Jun Takeuchi took the stage to demo the PlayStation 3's new motion controller with his game, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5"><em>Resident Evil 5</em></a>. That's right, Sony will be bringing motion control to a handful of existing titles, including a re-released <em>RE5</em> in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/23/resident-evil-5-directors-cut-to-feature-jill/"><em>Resident Evil 5: Director's Cut</em></a> this coming Spring.<br /><br />Sony also showed off <em>LittleBigPlanet</em> being controlled by two people, one wielding a motion wand while the other used a DualShock 3. Apparently a mess of other titles will be getting the motion treatment -- 13 in total (<strike><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sony-2-gallery/2311978/">seen here</a>, mostly in Japanese </strike> see update below) -- with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/flower"><em>Flower</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pain"><em>Pain</em></a> standing out as notable examples. <br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> We've got the full list <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/24/playstation-motion-controller-on-track-for-spring-2010-release/">right here</a>.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sony-2-gallery/">Sony 2 gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sony-2-gallery/#2312003"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/sony-keynote-2-028-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sony-2-gallery/#2312002"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/sony-keynote-2-033-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sony-2-gallery/#2312001"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/sony-keynote-2-011-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sony-2-gallery/#2312000"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/sony-keynote-2-018-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sony-2-gallery/#2311999"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/sony-keynote-2-007-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/24/tgs-2009-sony-adding-motion-to-existing-titles-new-re5-with-mo/">TGS 2009: Sony adding motion to existing titles, new RE5 with motion coming Spring 2010 [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 24 Sep 2009 01:30:00 EST. Well, maybe <em>featuring</em> Jill is not quite accurate -- "it's gonna be, uh, at least, <em>somewhat</em> involving Jill Valentine," confirms voice of Jill, Patricia Ja Lee, fresh from recording new voice and perhaps mocap work for <em>Resident Evil 5: Director's Cut</em>. That's right: <em>Resident Evil 5: Director's Cut</em>. It seems that P.J. Lee has also inadvertently announced a new, more twisting, more turning version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5/"><em>RE5</em></a> in the works.<br /><br />What else do we know? "It's some <em>good</em> scenes." Catch the full blab after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/23/resident-evil-5-directors-cut-to-feature-jill/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>'RE5: Director's Cut' to feature Jill, voice of Jill spills</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/23/resident-evil-5-directors-cut-to-feature-jill/">'RE5: Director's Cut' to feature Jill, voice of Jill spills</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Sep 2009 19:01:00 EST. Many gamers didn't respond well -- <em>it's an outrage!</em> -- to Capcom's plan to offer <em>Resident Evil 5's</em> Versus Mode as post-release DLC. It's easy to see why: The new, premium gameplay modes have been released less than a month after the retail game. Should Capcom have waited a bit longer to unveil these new modes? Perhaps. But after a few hours of gameplay, we can see other reasons to cry foul.<br /><br />Versus Mode will be familiar to anyone that has played the bonus Mercenaries Mode included in <em>RE5</em>. The DLC is, essentially, a five dollar repackaging of Mercenaries, allowing players to forgo cooperation for deathmatch-style gameplay. It's a simple twist, and one that doesn't even provide the illusion of effort on Capcom's part. It's clear to us that Versus should (and could) have been part of the original retail package. Yet in spite of this shadiness, it's hard to deny that Versus is a <em>fun</em> mode, and, if you've already exhausted the disc's content, worth the five dollar asking price.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-5-versus/">Resident Evil 5: Versus Mode</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-5-versus/#1426863"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/versus_143_bmp_jpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-5-versus/#1426862"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/versus_130_bmp_jpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-5-versus/#1426861"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/versus_025_bmp_jpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-5-versus/#1426860"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/versus_014_bmp_jpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/10/joystiq-review-resident-evil-5-versus-mode-dlc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq Review: Resident Evil 5 Versus Mode (DLC)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/10/joystiq-review-resident-evil-5-versus-mode-dlc/">Joystiq Review: Resident Evil 5 Versus Mode (DLC)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 10 Apr 2009 13:40:00 EST. <em>Finally</em>. Not a day goes by that we don't play <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5">Resident Evil 5</a> </em>and think, "Man, this would be better with Muppets." Seemingly hearing our mental prayers, IGN and Black20 Studios have created <a href="http://video.ign.com/dor/articles/923215/black20-trailer-park/videos/blk20_prt_muppetre5_040309.html"><em>Jim Henson's Resident Evil 5</em></a>. It's pretty much exactly what you'd expect: <em>Resident Evil 5</em> -- with Muppets. Of course, these aren't <em>actual</em> Muppets, but that doesn't really matter. If there's one thing Muppets have taught us over the years, it's how to <em>pretend</em>.<br /><br />Despite the silly premise, the video actually features pretty good zombie makeup and special effects, including some nice gunshot wounds. Also, we might prefer its cat-stroking, Bond villain version of Wesker to the whiny, pseudo-British one featured in the real <em>Resident Evil 5</em>. Check out the video after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/08/video-resident-evil-5-now-with-more-muppets/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Video: Resident Evil 5, now with more Muppets</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/08/video-resident-evil-5-now-with-more-muppets/">Video: Resident Evil 5, now with more Muppets</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 08 Apr 2009 22:45:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5/"><em>Resident Evil 5</em></a> was updated last night with a v1.02 patch. Taking a quick look at <em>RE5's</em> Trophy list, we've noticed that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/10/resident-evil-5-dlc-adds-new-online-multiplayer-modes/">ten new Trophies</a>, the ones linked to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/12/resident-evil-5-versus-dlc-confirmed-costs-money/">upcoming DLC</a>, have been added. The new multiplayer DLC isn't out yet and we're wondering if this new revelation means we'll be seeing it very soon -- perhaps as early as next week. But don't get your hopes up; Japan is the only region that has a specific release date and that's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/23/resident-evil-5-dlc-delayed-in-japan-to-april-9/">been delayed to April 9</a>.<br /><br />Other than the new Trophies, there weren't any other noticeable changes to the game. We've contacted Capcom for full patch notes and will update as soon (and if) we get them.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/27/resident-evil-5-gets-new-trophies-in-v1-02-patch/">Resident Evil 5 gets new Trophies in v1.02 patch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Mar 2009 12:14:00 EST. Capcom has revealed that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5/"><em>Resident Evil 5</em></a>'s Versus DLC will be available in Japan on April 9th, and not this week, as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/14/resident-evil-5-versus-dlc-dated-and-priced-in-japan/">previously reported</a>. Could this be in response to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/13/capcom-defends-charging-for-resident-evil-5-versus-dlc/">anger over the DLC</a>, an attempt by Capcom to let some extra time heal the wounds? Who knows, but Capcom has confirmed the Versus pack will cost 250 yen ($2.60) and 160<img border="0" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" alt="" /> on PSN and Xbox Live Marketplace in Japan, respectively, compared to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/12/resident-evil-5-versus-dlc-confirmed-costs-money/">the more expensive price</a> attached to the DLC here in the US. <br /><br />We've asked Capcom whether the rest of the world will share Japan's release date -- after all, April 9th <em>is</em> "a few weeks" after <em>Resident Evil 5</em>'s US and European release.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-5-versus/">Resident Evil 5: Versus Mode</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-5-versus/#1426863"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/versus_143_bmp_jpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-5-versus/#1426862"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/versus_130_bmp_jpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-5-versus/#1426861"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/versus_025_bmp_jpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-5-versus/#1426860"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/versus_014_bmp_jpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/23/resident-evil-5-dlc-delayed-in-japan-to-april-9/">Resident Evil 5 DLC delayed in Japan to April 9</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Mar 2009 21:12:00 EST. A new U2 album released in the UK last week, but nobody really noticed, because they were too busy <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/33628/RE5-beats-Bono-as-gaming-tops-entertainment-battle">jaunting through bright, deadly Africa</a> in Capcom's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5"><em>Resident Evil 5</em></a>. As if besting megastar Bono wasn't a big enough accomplishment -- watch your back, Chris and Sheva; <a href="http://www.southparkstudios.com/clips/155658/">Bono doesn't like being number two</a> (NSFW linkage) -- Capcom's game also managed to beat out all of the top 5 movies at the UK box office ... <em>combined</em>. It's likely to be a short-lived victory, however, as games rarely manage to have the staying power other forms of entertainment do in the UK. But, a victory it is nonetheless.<br /><br />Looks like we know where Capcom is taking us in <em>Resident Evil 6</em>: <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3158298.stm">Hull</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/19/united-majinidom-resident-evil-5-tops-uk-entertainment-charts/">United Majinidom: Resident Evil 5 tops UK entertainment charts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Mar 2009 15:09:00 EST. As if compelled by some otherworldly force, hundreds of gamers converged last night at San Francisco's Union Square. Of course, they weren't some kind of brainwashed <strike>zombie</strike> parasite-controlled mob -- they were there for Capcom's latest act of large-scale fan service, the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5">Resident Evil 5</a> </em>launch party.<br /><br />The full <em>RE5 </em>development team, lead by producer Jun Takeuchi, was on hand for the event, joined by members of the game's motion capture cast. Oh yeah -- we were there, too. (Though we weren't sporting spiffy, personalized B.S.A.A. team jackets like the dev crew.) Screaming contests were held, cell phones were laser-etched with <em>RE5 </em>imagery and photos were taken as evidence of the night's activity; check 'em out in the gallery below.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-5-launch-party/">Resident Evil 5 Launch Party</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-5-launch-party/#1429129"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/img_4678-3132009-11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-5-launch-party/#1429128"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/img_4632-3132009-16_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-5-launch-party/#1429127"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/img_4631-3132009-10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-5-launch-party/#1429126"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/img_4587-3132009-13_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-5-launch-party/#1429125"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/03/img_4602-3132009-9_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/13/joystiq-at-the-resident-evil-5-launch-party/">Joystiq at the Resident Evil 5 launch party</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Mar 2009 07:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/10/resident-evil-5-dlc-adds-new-online-multiplayer-modes/">We spotted it</a> and now it's reality: Capcom will be adding several new online multiplayer modes to <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5">Resident Evil 5</a></em>, for a price. The "Versus" pack will allow up to four players to compete across two different game types, including Slayer's Rule, a "point-based game that challenges players to kill Majinis," and Survivor's Rule, which focuses on player-vs-player combat, with the last person standing claiming victory. Each game mode will support one-on-one, or two-vs-two play.<br /><br />Capcom says Versus mode will be available "a few weeks" after the game's release and will cost 400<img border="0" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fanboy.com/media/2007/11/microsoftpointslogosmall.gif" alt="" /> ($5) and <strike>$3.99</strike> $4.99 on Xbox Live and PSN, respectively. <strong>Update: </strong>Capcom has noted that the cheaper price on PS3 was an error. Having watched <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/46560.html?r=1&amp;type=wmv">GameTrailers</a>' video on the evolution of Chris Redfield through the <span style="font-style: italic;">Resident Evil</span> series, it becomes quite clear that he began his steroid abuse sometime after the events of <span style="font-style: italic;">Code: Veronica ... </span>maybe<span style="font-style: italic;"> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/umbrella-chronicles">Umbrella Chronicles</a></span>. We understand the stresses of holding back the zombie apocalypse may have taken its toll on Redfield, but there's no need for him to hit the juice. <br /><br />Although we can't verify his steroid use from the bulging biceps and mountainous veins he has in <a style="font-style: italic;" href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5">Resident Evil 5</a>, we're sure a testicular exam and a bacne (back acne) check could confirm our suspicions. <br /><br />Chris, we're only calling you out in public because we want you to get better, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-lost-and-damned/">brother</a>. <div align="left">If you're near London's Trafalgar Square on March 12 and find some severed body parts, you could be a winner. (As long as they're fake and zombie-like, otherwise ring the police.) <br /><br />Capcom's wacky UK marketing folk have decided to hide the parts -- arms, legs, torsos and heads -- about the area as part of a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5"><em>Resident Evil 5</em></a> launch contest. The person who finds the most bits &amp; pieces between 9 a.m. and 12 noon local time will win themselves a trip to Africa. In order to be considered for the prize, participants must email Capcom beforehand (info at the source link) and be willing to stand atop Westminster Bridge, wave their bounty and shout "Kijuju!" (A common sight in London, we're told.)</div>

PS3 owners of <em>Resident Evil 5</em> will find a special surprise waiting for them when comparing their Trophy info with friends. Capcom has (accidentally?) revealed information about the game's upcoming DLC through newly uploaded Trophies. The DLC appears to introduce a number of new online modes: Slayers, Survivors, Team Slayers, Team Survivors and Versus. It's not exactly clear what these modes entail, but they appear to be competitive modes. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/02/bbfc-doesnt-note-racism-in-submitted-resident-evil-5-scene/">Everyone</a> has an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/05/eurogamer-notes-racism-in-its-resident-evil-5-hands-on/">opinion</a> on this whole <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5"><em>Resident Evil 5</em></a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/24/resident-evil-5-producer-there-is-no-racial-element-to-it-at-a/">racism debacle</a> -- well, everyone except a <em>real</em> expert on the science of race relations. Prompted to settle the ongoing debate once and for all, <a href="http://www.videogamer.com/news/06-03-2009-10832-1.html">Videogamer.com</a> has employed Glenn Bowman, University of Kent senior lecturer at the Department of Anthropology, to weigh in on the subject matter. So, is it racist? Long-short of Bowman's response: "I don't think it's racist. I think people are looking too quickly to be able to jam that label onto it."<br /><br />Bowman argues that the knee-jerk reaction of attributing racism to black characters being portrayed as bad guys "is actually itself a kind of inverted racism which says that you can't have scary people who are black." This sounds a lot like something <em>RE5</em> producer Jun Takeuchi recently said to <a href="http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090306/ap_en_ot/games_resident_evil">Yahoo! Games</a>: "We don't want to create something that offends a certain element of society. At the same time, we don't want to be in a place where you can't set a game in Africa or in an Arabic country. That in itself is a form of racism. For us, as creators of entertainment, it's important for us to strike that right balance."<br /><br />Interestingly enough, Bowman tries to strike that balance by painting a "counter-thematic" of anti-colonialism: "This whole idea of the victimization of Africa by pharmaceutical companies, by terrorist groups, all of whom seem to be run by white characters who are coming in and exploiting people ... seems to me to be far more damning of the colonial powers towards Africa than it says anything about whether or not blacks are some sort of savages. The blacks here are clearly being set up as victims, alterity, frightening." When the game hits stores next Friday, perhaps you can judge for yourself.<br /><br />Source 1: <a href="http://www.videogamer.com/news/06-03-2009-10832-1.html">Videogamer</a><br />Source 2: <a href="http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090306/ap_en_ot/games_resident_evil">Yahoo! The British Board of Film Classification does not see an "issue around racism" in a particular <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5"><em>Resident Evil 5</em></a> scene that may be considered inflammatory. <a href="http://games.kikizo.com/news/200902/bbfc-rubishes-resident-evil-5-racism-claims.asp">Kikizo</a> asked the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/bbfc">BBFC</a>'s communication head, Sue Clark, about a specific scene where a (*minor spoiler warning*) white, blond woman is dragged by a black man and "impregnated" with the virus, in a way that evokes racist imagery.<br /><br />Clark explains that the version of the scene submitted to the BBFC didn't have a black man dragging the woman. She explains that if the scene submitted were not the same as the retail version, it would be "illegal under the terms of the VRA [Video Recordings Act ]." <em>RE5</em> producer <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/jun-takeuchi">Jun Takeuchi</a> told us in a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/24/resident-evil-5-producer-there-is-no-racial-element-to-it-at-a/">recent interview</a> that when players finally get their hands on the full game, he believes "they will see and understand what it is all about; that there is no racial element to it at all."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/02/bbfc-doesnt-note-racism-in-submitted-resident-evil-5-scene/">BBFC doesn't note racism in submitted Resident Evil 5 scene</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 02 Mar 2009 10:58:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Jun Takeuchi has been very busy the last few years, dedicating his time to franchises like <span style="font-style: italic;">Onimusha</span>, <span style="font-style: italic;">Lost Planet</span>, and of course <span style="font-style: italic;">Resident Evil</span>. With the latest installment of Capcom-brand survival horror, Takeuchi has been battling accusations of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/05/eurogamer-notes-racism-in-its-resident-evil-5-hands-on/">racism</a> and complaints about the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/09/branching-dialogue-dont-shoot-or-ill-move-a-resident-evil/">dated controls</a>, all while serving up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/23/takeuchi-says-resident-evil-5-demo-downloaded-4-million-times-a/">four million downloads</a> of the demo. He didn't have to deal with any such matters back in the days of <em>Resident Evil 2,</em> that's for sure.<br /><br />We met up with Takeuchi during his recent stop in Los Angeles to discuss these issues and other hot topics. Hint: it's not the controls. It's the <em>incredible</em> storytelling. For example, haven't you been wondering how they're going to wedge Wesker back in there? And of course our pals at Umbrella Corp have once again made a mess of things, all in pursuit of that almighty dollar. It's the <em>Resident Evil</em> formula: some vaudevillian villains coupled with preposterous plots and, for a dash of the grotesque, some pesky parasites ...<br /><br />And, to be honest, we wouldn't want it any other way. Peep the latest trailer above for a smattering of what Capcom's got in store. Not enough? Fine - you can also peruse the gallery below featuring renders of some of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Resident-Evil-5/">Resident Evil 5</a>'s</em> most attractive baddies. Still concerned with the controls?<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-5-enemy-renders/">Resident Evil 5 (enemy renders)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-5-enemy-renders/#1373588"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/spencer-1024_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-5-enemy-renders/#1373587"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/em45_ndesu-1024_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-5-enemy-renders/#1373586"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/em44_popokarim-1024_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-5-enemy-renders/#1373585"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/em30_adjule_01-1024_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/resident-evil-5-enemy-renders/#1373568"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/em0d_maijini_cephalo_1024_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/20/new-resident-evil-5-trailer-totally-simple-to-follow/">New Resident Evil 5 trailer totally simple to follow</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 20 Feb 2009 02:15:00 EST. The red Elite's "item inquiry detail" makes note of the console's $399 price tag (which is the current cost of a black Elite), but no other product details are mentioned. It's speculated that this red'licious console could be the mysterious <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/23/rumor-xbox-360-to-receive-red-sident-evil-5-bundle/"><em>Resident Evil 5 </em>bundle</a>.<br /><br />If true, consumers will have another Xbox 360 color option to express their individuality. It would also make creating a <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/02/10/welcome-the-hello-kitty-xbox-360-into-your-heart/">Hello Kitty mod</a> much easier.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/16/red-xbox-360-spotted-in-toys-r-us-product-database/">Rumor: Red Xbox 360 spotted in Toys 'R' Us product database</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 Feb 2009 13:10:00 EST. Said Kawata, "Personally, I would like to create something on Wii in the <em>Resident Evil</em> family." He further stated that the team doesn't know what it would be, as it's been hard at work on <em>Resident Evil 5</em>, but asked gamers to "watch this space." Thus far, staring at our computer monitor has resulted in nothing but eyestrain.<br /><br />Kawata also spoke briefly to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/09/branching-dialogue-dont-shoot-or-ill-move-a-resident-evil/">concerns raised</a> about <em>Resident Evil 5</em>'s control scheme, saying that the team "reflected" on the control scheme for some time. While Kawata expects some may dislike the controls, he -- and the team -- believe it "does not reflect negatively on the game as a whole," but is instead "part of a forward-looking process." Kawata hopes that even those who dislike the controls will enjoy the overall product.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/13/resident-evil-5-producer-wants-more-evil-on-wii/">Resident Evil 5 producer wants more Evil on Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Feb 2009 23:00:00 EST.
