Brothers and sisters across the pond, we'd like to inform you that three new DSi colors are coming your way October 23. Joining the already available black and white models are the US launch cotton candy blue model, a metallic blue model (which looks exactly like the navy DS Lite from Japan) and a red model. Each DSi will come pre-loaded with the new Facebook integration feature and Flipnote Studio.

Oh, and if you get one, don't forget to take it online for those 1,000 free DSi Points (offer ends March 2010).

[Via Electrigpig]
Europe gets three new Nintendo DSi colors October 23 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Sep 2009 15:15:00 EST. Nintendo didn't bother to introduce a new color for the Wii system during its E3 press conference ... or anywhere else in North America, for that matter. Japan got its own mini-megaton tonight in the form of a new black Wii system, which will release in Japan on August 1. In addition, accessories including the Wiimote, Classic Controller, and Classic Controller Pro, will also be released in black to coordinate with the new system and extract money from people who already have Wiis.

In addition, Nintendo announced that a red DSi system will launch in the region on July 11. No announcements have been made for any other region.
[Via Kotaku]
Continue reading Nintendo releasing black Wii, red DSi this summer

Nintendo releasing black Wii, red DSi this summer originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 04 Jun 2009 03:05:00 EST. The red Elite's "item inquiry detail" makes note of the console's $399 price tag (which is the current cost of a black Elite), but no other product details are mentioned. It's speculated that this red'licious console could be the mysterious Resident Evil 5 bundle.

If true, consumers will have another Xbox 360 color option to express their individuality. It would also make creating a Hello Kitty mod much easier.
Rumor: Red Xbox 360 spotted in Toys 'R' Us product database originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 16 Feb 2009 13:10:00 EST.
There haven't been many color variations of the PSP-3000 series yet. That is, until now. Sony Asia has just revealed two new colors: Radiant Red and Vibrant Blue. Both models are part of a new series called "Carnival Color." No word on whether if these colors will make it to other territories. These two colorful systems will be available in Taiwan starting January 17th.

[Via PSPHyper]

What happens when you release a cel-shaded Japanese SRPG into the crowded November holiday lineup? Your game gets largely ignored. Sega's PS3-exclusive innovative tactics game didn't exactly light the sales charts on fire, with only 33k units sold in November, according to the NPD Group. November marked the release of heavy-hitting games like Call of Duty: World at War, Resistance 2 and Mortal Kombat vs. DC. It's thoroughly unsurprising that a game like Valkyria Chronicles didn't perform better in such a competitive market. That's a shame, considering how much we loved the game.

Of course, you could make it right. Right now. But chances are, you'll be waiting for the inevitable price drop on this retail flop. C'mon PS3 fanboys! Tell your friends about Valkyria. And while you're at it, tell them about LittleBigPlanet as well -- both of these games could use some better sales.
Unsurprisingly low Valkyria Chronicles sales originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 15 Dec 2008 16:00:00 EST.
Again, only one game this week. It's not that Enduro Racer is a bad game, just that it becomes very bland over an extended play session. There isn't much demanded from you, the player, and it's not like the game is incredibly challenging. So, save that $5 or use it toward something better on the Virtual Console.

The Seattle Tech Report ... reports that a motion (PDF link) filed last week in a Seattle, Washington lawsuit claims that Microsoft was aware of the widespread Xbox 360 disc scratching issues -- the console will severely scratch discs if tilted or moved during play -- before the console was launched in 2005. The motion, which seeks class action status for the lawsuit, cites quotes from a (currently sealed) document in which Microsoft employees claim that they were aware of the problem before the console was launched. The document quotes Microsoft program manager Hiroo Umeno who stated that the problem was discoverd in "September or October" 2005.

Microsoft supposedly considered several solutions to the problem prior to launch and rejected them all. Three solutions were considered, including increasing the disc holder's magnetic field, slowing disc rotation speed and installing "bumpers." The first was rejected because it would "interfere" with the disc loading mechanism, the second because it would extend game load times, and the third because it was too expensive (to the tune of $35 to $75 million). The only action taken by Microsoft, apparently, was to add a warning to the Xbox 360 manual. The company later applied a warning label onto the disc drive itself and established a program to replace scratched discs (for a fee).

Perhaps most damning, an outside consultant for the plaintiffs stated that both Sony and Nintendo's designs typically account for the possibility that a console will be moved while a disc is spinning.
Lawsuit: Microsoft knew about 360 disc scratching issue originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 15 Dec 2008 15:45:00 EST. It's a Square Enix media explosion! A few days ago, trailers for PS3's Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII made their way into the loving arms of the internet. Now, it's the PSP's turn. Check out trailers for these two upcoming PSP-exclusive games: Final Fantasy Agito XIII and The 3rd Birthday, after the break.
Continue reading Direct-feed: FF Agito & 3rd Birthday trailers

Direct-feed: FF Agito & 3rd Birthday trailers originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 15 Dec 2008 15:15:00 EST. But maybe you're more the Dreamer Series: Horse Trainer sort of gamer anyway. It's okay. We won't judge.
Ugh.

The press release, translated from German to English by Kotaku, didn't give a specific reason for the switch, merely requesting that, "In the event that you have not already done so, we would like to sincerely ask you to now only use the current, grey Nintendo logo." CasualGaming.biz contacted Nintendo UK, who not only confirmed the story was entirely true, but revealed that the change was officially made around two years ago. We missed that one, to be honest.

This may seem like trivial news to some of you, but to a generation who grew up in a world where Nintendo was assuredly red and Sega always blue, this feels somewhat sad.
Nintendo loses a little color originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 26 Nov 2008 16:24:00 EST. In 2007, Sears offered ravenous Black Friday shoppers a pink Nintendogs Lite and an eye-catching gold Phantom Hourglass console.

This year, to help you forget the fact that you're not rich enough to import a DSi, two further hardware bundles will be made available: an Ice Blue Lite with Brain Age and a case that looks like a Filofax, and a Mario Red model with an "M" stamped on it that ships with New Super Mario Bros., both priced at $149.99. It prints money, etc. If you take away that "M," these are basically two of Nintendo's newest European Lites. We admit to harboring mixed feelings about the "M." Would anyone else just prefer the plain red Lite?
Want to add a little zing to the plain ol' white and black Xbox 360 color scheme? A Microsoft web page reveals a new limited edition red and black Xbox 360 controller coming on Sept. 30, 2008. The standard wireless controller will come with a matching red rechargeable battery and a play and charge kit for $64.99 (a $5 savings over purchasing them seperately!). We have no idea why Microsoft would reveal a new color so long before the controller is set to be available, but it's release is awfully close to the newly-revealed Gears of War 2 release date of <strike>Sept. 9</strike> Nov. 7 [Update: Not sure how I made that ridiculous error. Jet lag, I suppose]. Hmmm ...

[Thanks, Scott]

Update: The Xbox press site also has images from a green version of the controller (shown below the jump along with a higher-res version of the red one). No information about this version, which is not even mentioned in the accompanying press release.
At the bottom of a GamesIndustry.biz story about some PS3 game (Metal ... something) failing to sell PS3s in the UK, we found news of how those new, Europe-only DS colors had fared in Britain.

And here's a surprise: Chart-Track (the company tasked with the exhausting job of tallying how many copies of Brain Training sell each week in Europe) has revealed that while the swish new red, turquoise, and green models had a "massive impact" on sales, none could dislodge the current top-seller, which is ... black. How boring!

Despite being the most delicious of all DSes, the red version could only come in second, and was followed by pink, white, turquoise, green and silver respectively. Sadly, Chart-Track doesn't dispense actual sales figures, but come on, Brits! Show some adventure in your choice of DS colors! Be crazy and live life on the edge like us!
UK still betting on black originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Jun 2008 17:00:00 EST. With those new DS Lite colors arriving in Europe this weekend, we were wondering how many of you planned on picking up a new handheld? Their advertising got increasingly ridiculous and antagonistic, as evidenced by the "Johnny Turbo" series of comic book-style ads in which a pudgy superhero saved kids from the horror of having to purchase a CD add-on for their "Feka" systems (another column for another time!)

The best of TTI's amateurish, juvenile ads, however, was this promotional video for Lords of Thunder, which was mailed out through a coupon program. It consists alternately of overenthusiastic teens swearing their allegiance to Lords of Thunder and confused strangers wondering why they're being bothered. Ironically, this kind of advertising may have served to turn people away from the Duo platform. Lords of Thunder certainly can't take any of the blame for low sales. It's amazing.

The hardcore Lords of Thunder (promo tape) audience must not have been what TTI anticipated, because I purchased a copy of this video from a Hastings Video Store in 2000 for .99. It was one of many copies in a clearance video bin. How did they even get there?

The very coexistence of cavemen and dinosaurs (and malevolent, animate flowers) comes to mind as a significant departure from reality, as do the talking dinosaurs who promise to be "YOUR NEW FRIEND ARF ARF ARF!!" Early man didn't live on floating, airborne fruit, nor did meat enable him to transform into an invincible, volcano-headed monster. Probably. But all those odd, fanciful uses of creative licenses are done in the name of gameplay or to create a cute setting or narrative.

But we don't know why developer Red decided that the dinosaur who comprises level 1-4 needed several uvulas. How do you even get that idea? Using the dinosaur's uvula as an obstacle is clever, but multiplying it is vaguely psychotic. Also, they have little smiley faces -- why not? Maybe someone at Red knows a lot more about dinosaur anatomy than anyone else -- or a lot less.

The God of War Entertainment Pack is available in stores today (even earlier, if your local Wal-Mart decided to break the street date). For $200, you get the limited edition red PSP system, a copy of God of War: Chains of Olympus, a code to download Syphon Filter: Combat Ops, and the UMD version of Superbad. All in all, a terrific value.

If for some reason, the color turns you off, you may be interested in the next available PSP Entertainment Pack -- the blue Madden pack.
Europeans, prepare to feast your retinas on some delicious eye candy. French site Jeuxvideo has got their hands on the new DS Lite models hitting a store shelf near you soon and took care to snap up a few pictures for us to drool over. We know of at least one individual dying to get their hands on that red one, but what about the rest of you? Where's the color, Nintendo? We know all about Noble Pink, but some of us are manly men, and it would hurt our fearful reputation to be seen with such a gentle shade of DS! Across the Atlantic, our North American friends have enjoyed those lovely two-tone models.

But no longer must our portable consoles lack vividity! Following much rumor and speculation, Nintendo has started e-distributing the advert you see to the right, featuring a rainbow of DSes (kind of an ugly rainbow, but a rainbow nonetheless). We've suspected this was real for a while, but it's nice to have some confirmation -- and some cheery color back in our lives.

In case you forgot, the Ice Blue, red, and green will all be here June 13th.
Nintendo confirms injection of color for European DSes originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 May 2008 12:30:00 EST. European games retailer GAME has some interesting listings up on their site, adding to a rumor we reported on back in March. As you can see above, three new DS Lite colors are being shown as soon releasing. According to GAME, Europeans can look forward to buying a green or red DS Lite, or the Japanese launch Ice Blue DS Lite come June 13th of this year.

In checking out Nintendo of Europe's website, we can find no support to this claim, however since it was redesigned, it's been a haven less for breaking news and more for attracting new gamers. So, it looks like you'll just have to wait and see, Europeans! Consider us jealous.

[Thanks, Frastoglegnia!]
Rumor: New DS Lite colors for Europe? originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 May 2008 12:30:00 EST. Back in March, Dutch website Nintendo Only claimed that Europe would be receiving a trio of new DS Lite colors on May 1st, including the (previously Japan-only) Ice Blue model, a mysterious green version, and the quite gorgeous Japan Post red DS Lite.

Alas, May 1st came and passed without incident, but now the exact same models mentioned by Nintendo Only have appeared in the database of a German retailer ("hellblau" is "light blue," while the others are obvious), complete with listings for red, green, and turquoise (?) styli. Oh, and there also appears to be serial numbers -- serial numbers make everything look more official.

Suddenly, this same speculation is looking far more credible, and we're way too excited again. Skip past the break for the full listings.
Continue reading German retailers list three new DS colors

German retailers list three new DS colors originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 09 May 2008 20:00:00 EST.
Reader supa_s (somehow) got one of the limited-edition red DS Lites that were only available through a Japan Post sweepstakes. It's a totally different color from the senior version with which we're so familiar: a much brighter and less sparkly red than the Crimson and Black. Like DS Lites tend to be, it's lovely. The prize also came with a matching black/red Hori System Bag, which we would put the system in immediately, only removing it in a clean room after careful hand-washing.

A rumor came up recently that a red DS Lite was planned for release in Europe. If that's true, it'll probably be a shade identical to this one, and then more people could have a shot at it (including importers!) While we would do our very best not to buy yet another variation of the exact same system, we'd be happy to gawk at the box in the store.

Blowing dust away (using the DS's microphone, a la Spectrobes) is also an important part of recovering pieces for your dinosaur army.

Beware, however, for if greenish cracks appear on the fossil, that means that it's getting damaged, and could break. We'd recommend reading Siliconera's write-up, as it actually sounds like quite a tense (and delicate) process!
We are First Impressions originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 11 Apr 2008 21:00:00 EST. For the winners: ultimate victory! For the losers: uh, we presume they just perish and eventually become fossilized all over again. It's a vicious cycle. But we digress.

There's plenty of screens and character art over at the official site, and also (more interestingly) some footage of the game, including a brief slice of action from the battles (here), and also a video showing an actual excavation in process, with the stylus being used to gently chip away at the dirt around a fierce-looking skull (here - scroll down and you'll see it). There's elements of both Spectrobes and Pokemon on display here, and that's no bad thing.

[Via Go Nintendo]
A brief dig unearths Kaseki Horidaa site originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 01 Apr 2008 22:30:00 EST. What an eye-grabber. The upcoming God of War Entertainment Pack gives bloodthirsty players a brand new red PSP, a copy of Chains of Olympus, Syphon Filter: Combat Ops and the UMD movie Superbad -- all for $199. The problem? It won't be available until May.
God of War PSP bundle box art revealed originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 25 Mar 2008 10:25:00 EST. Developed by Red and published by Nintendo, Kaseki Horidaa looks like Pokemon on steroids. Instead of deceptively cute creatures that hide dangerous attacks, the game will feature blatantly scary dinos with unspeakable power.

Unlike Pokemon, the game will allow players to compose a 3-dino team. Gaining a new dino comrade demands the player dig up fossils, as each ferocious beast is made up of 4 different parts. And digging up fossils isn't as simple as blowing away virtual dirt by blowing into your DS's microphone.

There's a real sense of tension here, as players can just as easily destroy a fossil as liberate it from its earthy confines. But, with over 100 different types of dinosaurs in the game, breaking a fossil or two won't be too much cause for concern. And, based on what dinosaurs you make, they'll be adept at attack, defense or support.

That's about all we could get from the Famitsu page (machine translation is being a royal pain with this, for some reason), so for some more eye candy, be sure to head on past the break to see screens. And keep an eye on DS Fanboy for more news on the game as it develops.
Continue reading Dig up fossils and enslave dinosaurs on your DS

Dig up fossils and enslave dinosaurs on your DS originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Feb 2008 12:45:00 EST. Well, that makes sense...

Sony is planning to release a new PSP bundle this summer, which includes the upcoming PSP-exclusive God of War: Chains of Olympus, according to an announcement made at retailer conference Destination PlayStation today. The package will include the game, a UMD version of Superbad, a certificate for Syphon Filter: Combat Ops, and a brand new red PSP system. This would be Sony's third PSP bundle in the US. Previous bundles included Daxter and Star Wars Battlefront. Just like the Star Wars PSP, this system will feature a special faceplate -- a rendering of Kratos. The bundle is expected to retail for $199.

[Update: High-resolution image of system added to our galleries.]
God of War PSP bundle this May: includes red system [Update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Feb 2008 13:43:00 EST.
As a promotion for the new year, Japan Post gave away a bunch of awesome prizes. Of special interest to us: the exclusive Japan Post red DS Lite, which entrants had 250,000-to-1 odds of winning. Of course, some of the winners are choosing to make a quick yen from their winnings (we assume most of the winners already own at least one DS anyway), so Yahoo Auctions, Japan's auction site of choice, is getting loaded up with the winning postcards. Sony recently announced two different types of red PSPs for Europe and Japan. Europe will receive the Spider-Man PSP, which features a red face with black buttons and back. It will also include Spider-Man 3 the game and the UMD movie. We're currently unaware of price or official release. There is also a similar Simpsons bundle planned, which will have a yellow PSP with Simpsons movie and game.

In Japan they will receive a deep red PSP model beginning December 13. The handheld will come in two versions. One will include a pouch, hand strap, 32MB memory stick and the other includes a Sig TV tuner, stand and 1GB memory stick. We are currently unaware of these units coming to the States.

Read: Sony Japan to launch Deep Red PSP
Read: Spider-Man PSP bundle revealed
Red Spiderman 3 PSP for Europe and red PSP for Japan originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Nov 2007 08:30:00 EST. Europe will be getting a new PSP-2000 bundle, featuring a red and black PSP Slim and Lite, a copy of Spider-man 3 the video game, and Spider-man 3 movie UMD. The red PSP will feature black buttons and a black back, giving it a truly distinct look.

Earlier in the year, The Simpsons PSP-2000 bundle was also announced, and we're assuming it will also bundle both the game and the movie with a limited edition system. The yellow PSP can be seen in our gallery below.

These bundles are exclusive to Europe, and are unlikely to find their way to the States.

Spider-man PSP bundle revealed originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 05 Nov 2007 20:30:00 EST. The race for PSP Lite is on! And ... Europe wins! The redesigned PSP-2000 will arrive in Europe on September 5th, and will feature two new movie-themed PSP systems to boot. "Simpsons Yellow" and "Spider-man Black and Red." We don't have pictures of these new models quite yet -- but our man in Leipzig should be able to steal a snapshot for you tomorrow. Unfortunately, according to Joystiq, it appears as though The Simpsons model is quite "gaudy."
PSP Lite launches September 5th in Europe with Simpsons Yellow, Spider-man Red originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 Aug 2007 17:30:00 EST. But not the super-hot two-toned Lite we've been drooing over, oh no ... this Lite is all red. Now, we've seen the gorgeous red and black Lite in the hands of some of our fellows, so we know it exists -- so what's with this one? Could there be another bundle? Another new DS Lite? Or is it simply a mistake on Best Buy's behalf? We snagged a screencap of the image just in case it disappears. Reader thrillho also caught a picture in the sales flyer, so it's not a one-off.

We do so love to start the mornings off with a little gossip, and this pic is as juicy as a ripe strawberry. We rather prefer the red and black model, but we wouldn't say no to an all-red Lite, either.

[Thanks, Fashnootin and thrillho!]
Rumor or error: the all-red DS Lite originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 20 Aug 2007 09:49:00 EST. As a mixed effort between developers RED and Idea Factory, published by Compile Heart, you know you're getting two things: anime girls and role-playing. Everything else is just bonus, like a strategy RPG. If you want to see more on the game, look at the official site.

The screenshots released for this game are, well, only impressive to those actually looking for an SRPG. Two of the screens are admittedly throwaways, but one gives you the opportunity to see what to expect. The layout of the game seems to be a strange cross between Disgaea and Suikoden Tactics. Since both of those games were fantastic, we're not going to pass judgment on this game yet. We do wonder how much titles like these benefit from the move onto Blu-ray and HD gaming, though.
Record of Agarest War gets some hardcore strategy on originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Jul 2007 18:00:00 EST. Micromart, who acts as a repair service for major retailers, announced that their company will no longer fix Xbox 360s that display the three ring of light error stating that its a problem that is both too common and too expensive to fix. "We were seeing about 30 a week before we pulled the plug on the service" said a Micromart rep and that the motherboard is the main cause of failure in the consoles. Micromart will still repair 360s that display other errors, but from now on will be directing customers to Microsoft if they experience three red light problems.

The negative press the Xbox 360 has been receiving due to hardware failures keeps on surfacing. How long will it take until Microsoft cracks and either discusses the problem or acknowledges that they are looking into resolving the hardware failures? Only time will tell, but we have to agree that this is getting a little old by now.

[Thanks, to everyone who sent this in]
Micromart won't repair three red light 360s originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 Jun 2007 15:00:00 EST. Jeromy recorded "The Ring of Fire" which is quite an entertaining version of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" with lyrics inspired by such 360 failures. We don't have much more to say other than to head over to his site and give the song a download. Best Buy is having a small-yet-appreciated discount on a few of the Wii launch titles. The following reductions should have already taken place:

Red Steel - $29.99 (formerly $49.99)

Super Swing Golf - $29.99 (formerly $49.99)

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz - $39.99 (formerly $49.99)

Perhaps not the finest of titles, but the significant price-cuts to RS and SMB might convince gamers who were on the fence to take the financial plunge. Any of you guys out there going to finally pick one of these titles up? If you picked up a Wii at Toys R Us yesterday, you now have an opportunity to get some relatively good games for a decent price, from now until the 10th.

Toys R Us is offering three Ubisoft-published Wii games for the price of two. Your choices are GT Pro Series, Open Season, Rayman: Raving Rabbids, Red Steel, and Monster 4x4: World Circuit. This offer is valid online, but we aren't sure about its status in TRU stores. If there are three games in that list you're interested in, or two games you're interested in and one you think you could get a decent price for on eBay, then you are in luck!

[Via QJ.net]
Ubisale at Toys R Us originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 05 Mar 2007 10:00:00 EST.
Encouraged by the positive reception and high eBay sales price fetched by his white PS3 mod, Michal Berecki is expanding the operation to include silver and red system cases. The new colors are still in the concept stage for now, but Berecki has promised the brightly colored PS3s will be on sale in the coming weeks.

We can't help but be tickled by the idea of a home hobbyist filling in a market niche that a console maker seems unwilling or unable to fill. With three colors planned already, the sky's the limit. What kind of designs would you like to see on a future PS3 case?
